The material in this course is strictly memorization. If you want to do well, just memorize the slides that she gives you. Her lecturing is rather dry as she only reads off of the slides. The true/false sections on the midterms and final try and trick you but the multiple choice and fill in the blanks are fairly straight forward.

VERY unclear, dont get me wrong she knows her stuff. However, when it comes to teaching it... Little bit of a stumble. My tip to you is to buy the exam aids by SOS ottawa. These study aids will be offered to you by an SOS representative before class or by email... BUY IT!!! helps a lot !!!!!
Okay it's true her powerpoints are empty but she's a GREAT professor. Unlike most bio profs she doesn't want you to memorize EVERYTHING, she wants you to understand certain concepts that's it. Her midterms are easy. Powerpoints are basically empty because she doesn't want you to memorize useless things that won't help you in life! She's great!
Good prof overall. She doesn't expect you to memorize every little detail and her exam was fairly easy if you studied enough. Her powerpoints have not enough information sometimes, but read the manuel and you'll be fine.
Pretty good prof: pretty good at explaining and pretty interesting. Gives a lot of examples (which is confusing because she says you don't need to know all of the examples by heart, but you do need to know some of them). The mid-term seemed easy, but the grading was tough. Of course, there is a lot of memorisation, so pay attention in class.
She cares for her student and knows her stuff but has trouble explaining it. Her power points are very unclear, I bought the SOS review packages which helped me ALOT. Her exams reflect the material but she's very specific when it comes to the answer she's looking for which makes it hard to get a good grade in the development part of the exam.
Her tests were really easy and the lectures were so short. Sometimes we had just a 45 minute lecture instead of 1h30min. She speaks really slowly and her voice put me to sleep sometimes. Her ideas are very unclear and jumbled up, she's constantly saying "this won't be on the test" so you don't even know what to study anymore. She was mediocre
Her slides are not organized and her lectures put you to sleep. Just listen to the recordings at 1.5x speed and read the book and you will do amazing. Exam questions are very precise so memorize the material very well (also try to understand for the developpment questions).
She uploads recordings of her lectures so they're really helpful if you didn't understand something in class. She isn't too clear on what is on the exam and what is not (although she does try to explain!). Her slides are packed with text. The exam is fair but she expects you to make extravagant connections to drug tests and research in real life...
She pretends to know everything in biology and she is very condescending. Her grading is very tough, and it seems like if she doesn't understand a topic she will assume the student has no knowledge about it either. I am glad I won't have to deal with her anymore! Worst prof in Bio
If I hadn't needed this class I never would have taken it. She gives readings to do in the book and make sure you read them and study them, because she will ask questions from stuff she never mentioned in class. I found I had to dedicate more time to this class then my others, which sucked. Also don't be afraid to get a tutor,it's worth it.
Very boring professor and sometimes speaks too slowly. Her slides are packed so no need to take notes (trust me, I've tried). Make sure to READ the book, it will help. She'll sometimes go off on a long explanation for 30 minutes, then will say "this won't be on the test" and she's often right. To succeed, study groups are a big help!
The other comment wasn't kidding about strict memorization (don't take it if you're not good at memorizing names of metabolites, enzymes, pathways, etc.; there's A LOT of them and it's a cumulative exam). The content was kind of dry, midterm was strict on mark distribution (say goodbye to passing with part marks cause there ain't none given!)
Her notes are all over the place and unorganized. Hated the fact that you had to read the textbook to understand her notes. I do not recommend this class.

She plays weird videos in the middle of her lectures and it's pretty annoying and throws off your concentration.

Man, just open your textbook and read. Ur gonna go to class and leave empty-handed if you don't read beforehand. Also, be very clear in your answers on midterms, as in don't write "many" write "more than one". Her tests aren't hard as in you could have the right answer but didn't express it specifically how it's written in the book. So practice!
Je n'ai vraiment pas aimé ce professeure. Même en dehors des cours, elle réponds de façon très floue aux questions concernant la matière ou les examens. Elle est parfois confuse dans ses propres explications ce qui est encore plus mélangeant. À ne pas prendre si ce n'est pas un cours obligatoire!!!
Her powerpoints are horribly unorganized, even she seems lost in her own content. Answers questions vaguely, and keeps insisting that it's because we're hardly scratching the surface, that she can't really be any clearer... The textbook is a life saver, you'll drown without it. Exams aren't too bad though, as long as you're prepared.
Pros: She answers all emails with detail and in person, no matter how good/bad your french is. (I'm in immersion) She seems to be passionate which helps in lectures. Cons: Her marking schemes are "it's either right or wrong" even with very subjective questions. This is what ruined me. You have to know exactly what she wants as answers.

Elle fait plein d'erreur d'orthographe mais s'attent a ce que tu n'en fasse aucune à l'examen. Le livre est suggerer car il est beaucoup plus simple qu'elle. Elle est toujours très vague dans ses réponses et ses examens.
Elaine Beaulieu was by far the worst prof I have ever had. She didn't portray the subject matter efficiently, and honestly I walked out of her classes more confused than when I walked in. Both midterms and the final were fair, however the grading was ridiculous. You have to be a mind reader in order to know what exact vocab they want to see. AVOID.
One lecture 1h30min per week. No final. Lots of work but good grader. Instructions are not clear. Lectures don't reflect the homework. Lectures have too much material to cover not well explained. She wants to make us think and helps us learn to analyse data. You can tell she is passionate about the subject and cares about us and our feedback.
I would give her a zero if I could. Nightmare. Do not take this class if it is not mandatory.
Worst professor I've ever had. Drop this class, don't even bother taking it with her. She gives lectures expecting you to already know everything so she doesn't explain anything. Her slides are useless. Her expectations are too hard even for Einstein. She won't help you if you email her about anything, super frustrating being an immersion student.
This is one of the worst profs I have ever had. She seems to be under the impression that you should already know everything before she teaches it. She expects way too much from her students and she isn't helpful at all. She will not cover everything that is on the exam in class. This was a very frustrating class. Be prepared to study like crazy.
She's a horrible teacher. She gives us a lot of studying guides which is kind of good but her exams are way to difficult and complicated. If this class is mandatory for your program, just hang in there and study a lot. :)
She spends a lot of time reiterating the same concepts at the beginning of class and then has to rush through the last 75% of the lecture because she wasted so much time at the beginning repeating herself. Uses a lot of nonsense activities that don't really have a clear connection with the course. Grading scheme is super unfair. RIP
Worst prof I have ever had. She has such surreal expectations and expects you to regurgitate all the information on her slides. If you don't read her textbook you won't understand her slides. She rushes through the lecture and will leave halfway through the revision periods. Grading scheme is rough. Don't take this class if you don't have to.

She has lots of chances for you to get 100% on the participation aspects of the course (participation on echo360, smartbio participation), however her midterms and final are killer. You need to memorize exact details, not the big ideas from the lectures. Not a great prof.
Yes there is a lot to memorize but if you go at every class and listen to her you can easily have an A. She is a though grader but if you listen carefully and study her notes there is no surprise in her exams. I read the comments before taking her class and I was really scared, don't be. Be a good student and you will do good.
If you took grade 12 biology and did well, chances are you'll do well in this class. Read the textbook, prepare for class and you'll get an A. It's straightforward, and she's straightforward too. This is an easy class and everything on the exam is not a surprise, since she gives you a study guide weeks before the exam. No reason to do poorly.
Her slides were more useful than her lectures. She would ramble on and on and it never really did make much sense.
Don't think I've ever met a single person who took cell bio in french who actually liked her.

Okay. People are way to intense on hating on this prof. Is she the best no. Would I want to take her class again no. But she isn't a bad prof. The way I see it is she puts a lot of effort into this class and expects you to do the same. 10% participation. 25% labs. Midterms are fine. Final is annoying. Its not an easy class but its 100% doable.
She's not very good at explaining the subject she's teaching and expects very specific answers in the tests/exam. she really just reads her slides which is just a waste of everyone's time and money.

Lectures are boring but you need to pay attention to get necessary info. Gives a lot of reading that I didn't find important for comprehension. Exams are super detail oriented. The first part of her class is much easier than the second. Study hard and take little points where you can get them (ex : biolingo, echo360, smartbiology)
The course material is good but the way she writes her tests is awful, she focuses on images in the corner of the slides rather than the big global concepts like DNA transcription! The smart biology program is a very good tool! Her bonus points with echo360 and her online quizzes are generous but the final was nearly 30 pages of irrelevant material
The class is very organized and has lots of opportunities for marks (15% midterms, homework and mastering assignments). She gave us Learning Objectives before both midterms and the final which strictly outlines what to study. Overall good class but lots to study.
Good prof overall. Sometimes lectures can veer off into material that's not entirely relevant to the midterms or exams, but it's not much of an issue considering that 99% of the testable learning objectives can be answered from the slides. Allocate time for group assignments a few days in advance, since they are somewhat time-consuming.
Professor Beaulieu is really passionate about microbiology, and that comes through in her lectures! But the lectures are a bit hard to follow, so sometimes the textbook really helps. She posts learning objectives that are very helpful for midterm/exam studying. Overall a good prof, just make sure you study!
Makes the subject interesting. Personally thought it was a great class. I would definitely take this prof again. Easy exams if you study properly. Very possible to get an A in her class.
She is an awful prof. She expects us to know everything before she even teaches it. When students ask her questions during the lecture, i find that her answers to can be very rude and unexpected.

Worst microbio course ever - spends more time talking and explaining material that is not relevant to what she will test us on. She is aware that she does that and is frank about that - yet she doesn't match her exam questions to what she teaches. Insanely heavy course load - if she's you're only option take the course with easy af electives
Its a very boring class but she is a really kind professor. I think she is teaching a very hard subject where you need to just memorize everything, but honestly she is a decent prof, work hard, and you will be more than fine.
I cry everyday and don't even know if ill make it looool but hey, study hard, read a lot, stay positive and we can get through this together (her exams are super detailed so learn little details and do EVERY participation point u can)! Nothings impossible, work for it. summers around the corner.
I actually quite liked her. People just give her a hard time because the material isn't as simple as previous biology courses, although she explains it very well, is definitely very understanding and cares about her students. She's very passionate about her work and if you put in the necessary effort, you'll do fine.
Elaine is by far the worst prof I've had. She stands at the front of the class and reads off her slides. She doesn't even know what's going on in her own class. I could get up there and teach better than her.

As a person, she is sweet. She tries her best to teach well although she does tend to read off her slides. Yes, there is a lot of material to cover. I found her tests hard but she doesn't try to trick you. She is accessible outside class and very friendly when you ask her a question. Trust me, she's decent as a prof, just tough for her exams.
She really does the best she can, but the class is dry. Listening through the lectures is painful. Her tests are also pretty tough.
She is a decent teacher but makes the material seem boring because she reads off the slides (almost fell asleep a few times). Even so, I recommend attending the class, because she has graded activities that can help bring your grade up slightly.
I will be honest, if you are a first year and looking for a class that will have a teacher who actually cares about the studentswould opt this class in English instead. Such a huge difference between chapeau and her. I did well in the class so not unhappy but that final was poorly written. And impossible.
i Agree with the last post. Take in English as the bio teachers have better reviews. The material isnt hard it how this person teaches. I will not take any further classes for her after doing this one for her. Read reddit cause its all previous students. If enough students dont schedule this class the Uni will have to review it
Such a sweet lady, she wants you to succeed, and is passionate about her field. Put the work in, study everything, and you'll do just fine.
She includes any additional information you need in the text section of her slides so if you miss a class someday you won't fall super far behind, lots of group assignments to boost your mark and the tests are fair. Use the learning goals for midterms and exams and you will do great in her class! Would recommend for a GPA boost to science students!
Her midterms weren't bad; they were pretty easy actually. But her final was absolutely brutal and tested on some content that was either never taught, or from the corner of her 10000000 slides.
Yeah this prof was mediocre but not terrible. Really did not appreciate the million slides to study from post-midterm 2, plus the final was tougher than midterms. I will say she does give bonus and makes up for some questions she feels were not worded properly, so she's not arrogant about her mistakes which I can't say about some profs at this uni.
Full disclosure, microbio was a super tough course for me. Dr. Beaulieu was always very nice and helpful in her office hours, but her teaching style never really benefitted my learning. Prepare to cram a ton of material into your head only to be asked about some very minuscule details. Group projects were a nice mark booster though
midterms were so so easy and if youre in a good group the case studies were very easy too, but the exam was much more challenging and lowered my grade significantly, relatively course overall tho just be ready for the final
She's kinda boring but she explains the materiel really well so if u go to class, take good notes and maybe with the help of the manuel, you should do pretty good. I got an 82% on my first midterm and the class average was a 64% so trust me. Also, those smartbio videos will save your life, that's basically all I studied for my second midterm
I appreciated SmartBio, I find it rare that you get useful homework in a class. The exams were very heavy, but they reflected the course material well. Make sure that you understand the diagrams super well, a lot of people (me lol) messed up on the first exam because of that.
Her lectures are not super engaging, however, her grading criteria is very clear. I relied on that and was able to get through the course so I strongly recommend doing that. Also, she provides opportunities for many bonus participation marks which were a saving grace.
Don't bother getting the textbook it was completely useless imo and personally I did not rely heavily on taking notes, rather I made practice Qs for myself based on her powerpoints which were pretty thorough (this helped me a lot for the second midterm) and practice drawing diagrams! Come to class for the participation Brightspace quizzes
She's very resourceful, transitioned to online well. Her in class lecturing leaves a lot to be desired. Very dry, boring, but the slides are all you need. Cram/study those and you'll be in a good position. Its memorization 101, but its a lot and it comes at you fast. Second part (2nd midterm material) is deceptively complicated.
I had her when uni went online, so prior to online she was not great, looked like she didn't enjoy the class and was very boring. He midterms are really easy. ONLY LEARN THE BASICS. She give a lot of detail but when the midterms comes down to it, they're super simple. When classes went online, she did a really good transition and it was easy.
J'ai bien aimé le cours! Tous ses examens sont basés sur les objectifs d'apprentissage (sur chaque ppt elle met les objectifs reliés au chapitre. Elle publie aussi une fiche complète de ses objectifs). Ce que je vous suggère: Faire un document et répondre à chaque objectif au fil du semestre. C'est une excellente façon d'étudier.
Tell student that the final could be completed in 3h... it took me 11+ h and Im still not confident in my answer. The 14h window is nice but sometimes I still feel Im running out of time. She said google wasnt needed and we could find everything in our notes is questionable.
This was the worst final exam that i have ever done, ever. It did not reflect the material at all and was insanely hard. i took 4 hours to do the exam and it still wasnt enough. if the course notes were supposed to help me, how come nothing was identical between the notes and the exam? on top of that this class had an insane workload
The exams were not equivalent to the class material. And before any TA or past student start talking I toke bio HL in hs which is equivalent to first year bio and it was easier than this bs. She said it was a 3 hrs exam then why did the class average to taking 10 hrs? 16 pages all mise en situation questions and only given 14hrs starting at 5am.��
This prof is really nice and has a good sense of humour. Most of my classes were in YouTube video format and the information is clearly given but be prepared to take A LOT of notes. Her PowerPoints are also available and I recommend trying to understand the concepts instead of just memorizing them.
She's really nice and you can tell she cares about her students. She gives a lot of assignments which can help boost your grade. She's always accessible and tries to connect the theoretical material to real life situations. The exams are pretty difficult so make sure to take good notes during lectures.
This was a tough class. I doubt that some questions on the exams (midterm and final) is at a first year level, looks like its a 3rd level class question. Never trust the teacher when shes says it should take like 1h(midterm) or 3h (final) took my way more time for both. Open book is great but it doesnt compensate for the level of some questions
I took this class with Beaulieu in Winter 2019. I don't dislike a lot of professors, but I really didn't like her or this class. The midterms weren't bad, but the final was so difficult, and there was so much material to study. She gave participation marks which helped a bit. This is the lowest grade I've ever gotten in any class in my life.
Very boring professor. So many different softwares that made it very difficult to keep up. A majority of the classes were not taught by her, she used other videos. Exams were very difficult and seemed beyong a firsy year introduction class.
LOVED Dr Beaulieu. Beginning of the semester the lectures took some adapting but my the end, the material was clearly presented, exams were challenging but was necessary to study.
2 midterms (15%,20%)-she asked very specific questions for which you need to understand details about the course material, case studies/video 13% (I did the former-they were fun but required some thinking), and quizzes & a final. Main concern: she was disrespectful, unorganized, and blatantly ignored my emails when I asked for help or clarification
The class is composed of 2 midterms, case studies, one evaluation and one final exam. She is extremely caring for 65% of the grades. However, the 35% final exam is a completely different story. She claimed that the final could be done in 3h which is something impossible. For people taking her class in future, just be aware of the final exam.
I really enjoyed her she was super nice and had so many options for grades with a cool sketch project Im glad to have chosen. Her exams are open 24+ hours and interesting applied knowledge/ case style which I really enjoy especially being online. Overall would take her again interesting course and taught well
35% final exam was brutal. In the form of a take home exam which she said would take 3 hours but took the entire day and questions were extremely difficult. The rest of the course was fine but the final was the worst thing ever!
Shes extremely understanding when you run into difficulties and always answers her emails within a business day. Her midterms and final are fair and involve everything she talks about in class. The final was heavier but if you study it will be fine. She has quizzes and extra projects to make up for if you didnt do well on a midterm.
I dont understand the negative reviews! She is the nicest prof and funny! Her midterms are very easy and her final was harder than the midterms but I found it still relatively easy as long as you study! Everything you need can be found on her slides so you dont need the textbook to study and you get 24+ hrs to finish it! Would take her again!
Horrible. Her midterms and assignments are great, but her final and her answer key for it is insane! Crazy how you can go from being an A+ student to practically failing the final even though you prepared for it. It wasnt even a hard final, it was just the wonky marking and questionable answers she used. Avoid! No amount of preparation can help!

Sorry but most of y'all are angry because you didn't give detailed answers. She specifically asked for detailed answers for the final and we had 1 day to complete this exam. She's not the worst you just have to listen to her carefully and write everything she says then you'll be good. This is a 3rd year course I don't know what people are expecting
I am not complaining here since I got an A+ for the overall class grade, but the final exam marking scheme is somewhat unfair. She is looking for detailed extended answers and not just 1 sentence or so. I spent 22 hours writing the exam and got an A- on it. I don't feel like the effort I put in this class is awarded by the final exam mark I got.
Lectures are interesting. Grading is awful, midterms were okay but the final was graded harshly. The final exam instructed us to be brief but the prof wanted detailed answers with specific keywords according to her rubric. A question was worth 2 points but apparently needed 4 points with each point awarding you a 0.5 mark. ��
The questions she will ask are not confusing. The issue is that she has no part marks (u will never get a 0.5 for a 1 pointer unless it was something specified from her rubric), and requires you to be VERY SPECIFIC. A question worth 6 marks might actually want 12 different points lol. avoid if possible, very easy to mess up. (Not butthurt)
This course was well structured. The exam questions are pretty application based over general knowledge. A lot of comments on here complain about how shes not an easy marker but most will complain that they dont get part Mark's for wrong answers. Most will also not open the textbook once or will read over their notes. Good proff.
A lot of students are leaving bad reviews because of the final. But, I think people just did not study for the final since the second midterm was so easy (you could literally get an A without watching or reading any lecture beforehand). She's a really sweet prof. There is a lottttt of very easy marks (case studies, quizzes, stekch evaluation).
One of my favourite classes I've taken!! She makes the lectures interesting and I even enjoyed the case studies and midterms. A lot of application questions but if you watch the lectures you should be fine. I'm not even in a science degree and I did well. I don't know why she's getting bad ratings I don't have any complaints.
Idky everyone here is complaining so much, shes a great prof. Our class average was 81 percent. Those who are complaining must have somehow done less then the bare minimum as we were given more then a day to do the final exam and midterms. I didnt really study and got an A+. But dont get me wrong the tests were still pretty tough.
This class was a rollercoaster for me. The midterms were fair and could be done well easily without attending lectures since they are take home exams. On the other hand the Final exam did not reflect the difficulty of the midterms and was much harder. I spent 8 hours on the exam and got a 60%. The rest of the work is easy and free points.
Professor Beaulieu links dozens of youtube links in her brightspace that only explain the base material and the course is asynchronous. Her midterms and exams are open book but are difficult to do well on due to the obscurity of the questions. She provides little review material or constructive feedback so it's hard to know where to improve.

The midterms weren't representative of the material in the slides, there was also info in them from quizzes and case studies. Lots to do for her class; case studies, multiple midterms, final, and case studies. The prof spends a lot of time answering questions from students in the class to the point of impeding on course material.
Honestly, a mid prof. I actually enjoyed the content and writing the midterms, which is rare for a class, but if you're not into mircobio, I can see why you wouldn't like this prof. A lot to remember to do (case studies and homework) but a lot of stuff to get your marks up. Overall I'd recommend her if you only need a decent mark in this class.
"I don't know", the official motto of this prof. Seriously though, what's with the TA's in this course? They only grade one question per case study and our whole grade for that assignment is based on that question, and they get paid for this? Spelling mistakes, doesnt update her incorrect slides, unnecessary use of big words (we get it einstein).
2 midterms, 1 final. Had an option to do either 9 homework sets video sketches. 6 mandatory case studies. Midterms were not that bad but the lectures were so content heavy that I never managed to study well for them. Know the basic stuff and you should do well. Not all questions on the case studies were marked. Go to office hours and to class often
She can sometimes get off track during her lectures but otherwise her lectures were fine. For midterms and the final (and I cannot stress this enough) : LOOK AT HER LEARNING OBJECTIVES! Her exams are difficult but study her LO's religiously and you will be fine.
Class format was absolutely awful. Everything was online via videos and an online textbook which was very unclear. There was so much work to do every week and although she says it's only 2 hours, you end up spending more than a day on it. Course is very content heavy and should have been taught in person. Make sure to read and not fall behind.
Her exam are not fair game, they are so hard, no matter how you studied for. At least you can upgrade ur grade in quiz and lab. It says it's not an online class, but it is. U teach all the subject to urself and when u ask questions, she just repeats what she said in her YouTube video and makes you feel stupid.
If you want to teach yourself then take this class cause that's all you'll be doing the whole semester. She gives videos to watch and smart biology to read which takes up more time then it's supposed too. Midterm's are not that bad but she looks for specific answers. The final was brutal. The only good thing was the labs and quizs.
Class was part presential and part online... personally I didn't enjoy that the only time we had actual class was only to review study cases. Literally your just paying for youtube video access and some of them aren't even that clear. It's a shame, the course seemed pretty cool, maybe she's a good teacher, but using bad methodology.

Everyone makes her out to be the worst prof ever, she is not perfect but she's definitely not a 1/5. Everyone says that you have to teach yourself everything from her vids. True, but you could also attend her classes to ask questions. Most people got bad grades but didn't attend her classes. If you put in the effort, you will get that desired A+.
You had to teach yourself all the material with Youtube videos even though the course was supposed to be in person. The videos were very long and very content heavy. You really have to memorize everything. I don't recommend.
Class material is not the easiest but prof Beaulieu provided lots of exercices which helped understand. Lectures are recorded, so attendance not mandatory. Make sure to read and master the study guide and you should be good fotr the exams! Labs aren't to hard, could finish in 1 1/2 - 2 hours most of the time and clear grading criteria.
Case studies & Smartwork are easy marks. Midterm 1 & 2 are perfectly doable if you FOCUS ON THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES. She does sometimes remove questions if it seems like a lot of students got them wrong. She's pretty understanding & even extended a deadline for a case study. I definitely could have gotten an A+ if I studied harder for the final.
Great lecturer and gives easy marks in the form of case studies and smartwork quizzes. Her exams are relatively easy and very fair. Take good notes in class and read over the lecture slides a couple of times before the exams and you can easily get a good grade.
I don't know what the complaints are about. A lot to remember to do: case study, quizzes (or sketch), 2 midterms & final. Midterms were very fair (study the LOs). Exam style is MCQ & short answer. No lecture on case study days & does exam prep class w practice. Final exam was more difficult but doable. I could have gotten an A+ if I studied more.

Interesting course but too much material to study for the exams without precision on what to study. Midterms were extremely precise to concepts that were lightly covered in class. A more detailed learning objective that are actually going to be tested would be appreciated. The prof mumbles while saying definitions that are not written on the slides
Dr. Beaulieu obviously enjoys what she does and is caring toward her students, but I didn't enjoy her class very much. Her midterms are very test heavy and the criteria isn't very clear. Attending her classes is kind of useless because she mumbles a lot and reads off the slides but smartbiology is super helpful and her lecture notes are clear.
She's very nice but her tests focus on material that was lightly covered in class (it's absolutely ridiculous). Her practice tests aren't even remotely similar to her tests. Her class is super disorganized and hard to follow. Most of the concepts aren't even taught by her; they're on SmartBiology. Would never take her class again unless I had to.

Exam was so hard
She honestly wasn't a bad prof: she gives you a bunch of strategies for efficient studying and her lectures are super dynamic. With that said, the class itself is really tough, and the exams don't make it any easier. She gave a lot of easy A assignments to compensate though.
Her slides are very empty and useless, she struggles at teaching. However, the way the course is set up (syllabus) will save you, even if you have horrible midterm/final grades you can still achieve a decent grade. As, 25% is for labs (very straight forward), 10% for quizzes (online) and 5% for smart bio (online).
Her teaching style takes a bit of getting used to, a lot of smartworks quizzes, case studies, and exams, but it was a great way to force me to study and keep up with the content. Also, the case studies were honestly pretty interesting and well rounded in terms of content. She's also a nice person, accessible, and based, easing a lot of stress.
Had Beaulieu for BIO 1140 & 3124 Slideshows = clear/concise + her additional comments during lectures - ALL recorded/posted Optional textbooks - makes it clear if not necessary to purchase Graded not only on exams, but EASY open-book case studies/quizzes worth total of 20% of grade Content-heavy course, but straightforward & honest teaching style
She's not bad at lectures, but she makes me feel so bad whenever asking questions. Her responses are always "I don't know and maybe". She doesn't take the time to actually explain things, and she can be quite rude. Her learning objectives are sometimes very unclear and don't match the content in the slides.
At first, she was quite friendly and funny in her lectures. However, she became very harsh and didn't answer questions properly with most of her answers being "I dunno." She would roll her eyes when a question was proposed, making you feel very bad for being a curious student.

Final exam was a poor reflection of what was taught in class. Most questions dud not have a clear answer and were up to interpretation. Asked questions that involved things that were not common knowledge. Overall very misleading in her LO.
I came to balance out the bad reviews. While yes I agree the final was hard, it really wasn't anything unexplainable. That Being said, don't try to cram the studying at the very last minute. I think she's a good prof regardless that did a review session the day of the final!you need to really prepare for the exams in order to do well in the class.

Her midterms were fair and based on the learning outcomes and yet her exam was completely backhanded. the questions were worded horribly and she asked material not regarding our course materials or learning outcomes. she did a complete 180 when it came for her exam. very frustrating since i enjoyed the material and studied, disappointed as well.
I actually enjoyed this course at the start. Prof is funny, lectures are clear and the midterms were all very fair and reasonable. However, the final exam was VERY HARD and absolutely nothing like either of the midterms or like the content covered in class. I had an A in the course but after that final I would be lucky just to pass.

Why were there questions about space on the final. Is this a micro class or jeopardy?? The final was so atrocious, I couldn't even find the right answer AFTER the exam when looking back at her slides. People started glitching during the exam, thought maybe they handed us a masters level exam. No amount of studying would've helped. AVOID.

I think everyone is hating a bit too much, I would definitely agree the exam was harder than the midterms but it was not as bad as everyone is saying. The course is very heavy but Dr Beaulieu does a good job at explaining the course content. You definitely have to put in the work but definitely not impossible to do well.

Prof Beaulieu has learning objectives that have always been used to indicate what we should study. The final had questions far more complex and sometimes separate from these objectives. The difficulty of questions asked in the final compared to midterms are like night and day. I entered the final with an A+ and I leave in fear for what is to come.
I feel like I need therapy after going through that final exam. I'm really confused why it was so much harder than the midterms, and didn't follow the LOs. No amount of studying could have helped, and Beaulieu has wasted the time and effort I spent on this course. Really disappointing of her to end the semester this way.
The entire course was super interesting and I enjoyed it. Whoever takes this course I hope your final does not turn out like this year. Midterms had a good difficulty level and the learning objectives matched it very well. The final however has taken my first born and left me feeling violated. I'm not sure how I could have better prepared.
I feel bad she's getting dragged. Her objectives clearly stated we'd apply lecture concepts to new examples, which she prepared us for with case studies and quizzes. She warned the final would be harder, but it covered topics we discussed, like toxin immunity and antibiotic resistance. The exam was tough, but we can't blame the prof for EVERYTHING

The final exam felt more like a physiology exam than a microbiology exam. The long answer questions were unclear. She just lied to us during the review session about how the exam would cover the course modules. Also, she would not answer questions in class that well I would rather spend five nights at Diddy's than take a class with her again.

The midterms were fair. The final oiled everyone up and was NOT representative of class material. Many questions are left open to interpretation and meant to misguide you, or just straight up lack context needed to answer. Not to mention she always has an attitude.
She's a good lecturer, and I found the content interesting. There are assignments that are 20% boosters, and midterms are doable. But the 50% final GOOD LUCK because I studied for weeks, and it was brutal. It did not reflect the course content at all, and there was a racist question about Indigenous people. LOs for final exam do NOT reflect the test a single bit; she didn't prepare us for it at all. She doesn't post past finals as well. you have her slides, smartwork assignments, (which she says some aren't reflected in our course objectives), and case studies that have lots of bs information and you won't know what's important to go over again
I don't see why people haven't been giving her good ratings. Her lectures are clear, and she designed her class logically. Everything makes sense, and she is clearly passionate about her subject. Case studies are interesting, and are focused on quite a bit on exams. HW quizzes are a bit tricky, but help solidify all concepts. Overall, good prof
Please avoid this prof, especially if you're Indigenous. She put in a racist question on her final that perpetuates horrible stereotypes about Indigenous peoples. I'm Indigenous and I left that final crying due to the discrimination I faced in that question. No student deserves to feel like this. Avoid her at all costs

The mars question wasn't so bad but that racist one was definitely bad she must've been drunk while writing that garbage. Prof sent an announcement about the final without any acknowledgement of the violation and stress that was felt by students during the exam. What's so frustrating is the fact that she blatantly lied about what would be on the exam even after having developed it. Such an ingenuine prof. AVOID if you want someone who cares.

Elaine is known for asking random questions on her final exams (worth 50% of final grade). Her midterms are fairly easy and the assignments and quizzes (20% total) boost your grade. Her finals though... are something else and don't make much sense with the course material. If you want a teacher that cares, and is there for you, avoid at all cost
I'm in the mechanical engineering program and I personally didn't find this class particularly difficult to pass. Same for the final exam, we just had to use our critical thinking for a lot of questions, which I don't think is too much to ask.
If microbiology with Elaine isn't mandatory for your program, don't take it. If it is mandatory, switch programs. Numerous midterm and exam questions had nothing to do with the learning objectives. Even if you like microbiology, she'll find a way to make sure you no longer do. It's quite telling that numerous students made a review post exam.
Gives outline of what is expected on midterms and final, throws that out the window and puts anything but that on the exams. As well makes racial and homophobic comments personally or while in class, might be a little unprofessional if you ask me.
i actually liked the class and enjoyed her lectures, and the midterms were both fair imo. but the final was so different from what was asked previously that it dropped by grade by over 10%.
The lectures and content is very interesting and the case studies and smartwork is a good grade booster. The final was horrible though, and nothing like the midterms or the learning objectives - probably harder than my orgo and biochem finals. It would have tanked my grade more if she hadn't made so many of the questions bonuses.

She's not a good professor. Her lectures are boring and monotone. The exams don't reflect the notes or learning objectives. Questions make no sense, with multiple possible answers depending on interpretation. The practice exam is nothing like the real one, even though she claims it is. Avoid her!

Didn't take the final yet, but this prof is amazing! Yes the exams go above and beyond what's seen in class, but it's sooo easy to get a good grade because you just apply the concepts from class to a different context. She really teaches us how to think like researchers and make connections between concepts, which will really help you in the future
The content of the class is interesting but her lectures are super boring. She either goes to fast and skip slides, or she goes on explaining the material for way too long in her monotone voice. The midterms are difficult, asking mainly theoretical/application questions involving the course material. Easy to lose focus, difficult exams, try avoid.

the midterms didn't really match what she taught us at all, I have yet to do the final so I can't comment on that yet but she gives lots of homework (it can make up for not doing that well on your midterms) so it really depends on if you don't mind that (as in bright space quizzes) cause personally that helped boost my mark a lot.
Just took the final. She gave a 9 page document on what to study, none of it was actually on the exam. It may have been the worst exam I have ever taken in my life and nothing that I studied was on it. She Her midterms weren't much better either. She is probably the worst prof I have ever had, if you need to take this class, definitely avoid her.

She gives learning objectives and practice exams. You'll feel prepared and then get to the midterm with random questions and start questioning if you studied at all. The final was also random, but not as bad. She gives 5% quiz and 5% smart bio to boost your grade ( thank god ) and the bio labs are worth 25% and are easy too..yeah good luck.
She gives the learning objectives and I promise you that if you master them before the exam it will be impossible to get a grade lower than A-, use ChatGpt whatever you want but make sure you master them before exams

Her lectures are boring and there's no point attending class. Best part of it is that she consistently ends lectures >20 mins early.
I don't even know what to say. She is horrible, I managed to get an A with only going to 3 lectures. But HOLY she is terrible . No practice questions, the ones she gives in the Devoirs are fake. Shes honestly a great prof, and there's many ways you can get extra credits in this class (quizzes, midterms, website)! But I can't lie, this class is heavy so STUDY, and sometimes on the exams she expects you to know stuff she never teached but its only like 1 question, so I'm not complaining.

Honestly, the exams were so insanely fair. The content in the exam was always directly from the in-class material. The bad reviews for this prof make zero sense to me. The classes are very engaging; this was my favourite class for that semester.
