Awesome prof. very interesting class. Gives reviews and allows cheat sheets to EVERYTHING.
Great prof! Fun and enthusiastic. Says what everyone is thinking. Doesn't believe that tests actually test your knowledge. Gives questions to final beforehand and allows notes in exams. Super nice lady to talk to and she actually remembers her students and stuff about them! Would highly recommend! (Great marker!)
Elaine is an AWSOME teacher. Extremely fair and reasonable and makes you laugh atleast 5 times per class. If your going to take ANTH take it from her. You wont regret it. She cares for her students. She kicks a$$.
Elaine is possibly the best prof ever. Not because she allows cheat sheets to everything but because she really cares about each and every one of her students...if you go to class! If not, she'll single you out at the final and ask who you are!
I would have to agree with everything written by the previous reviewers. It was almost like a high school class with everyone's favourite teacher in the sense that she knew almost everyone's name (amazing with 160 students), and she really involved the class. I would definitely take another class from Elaine, no question!!
I found Elaine's teaching style to be refreshing and enjoyable. She made the class interesting and allowed students to interact. I also enjoy the perks that she gives to students who attend class. I think that more professors should take lessons from her and reward students that put in the effort.
scatter brained at times but all around awesome
Awesome...she was a great professor to communicate with. I took this class through the extension division, had 5 papers and a final. She is very understanding with late papers, so don't stress out. I wish other professors were as great as she was. Take this class if she is teaching it!
Elaine is down to earth, honest, funny, know's what she's talking about and is honest when she has no idea. Going to class is fun when she's teaching. Questions on midterm (havent taken final but I'm assuming they're going to be same style since all her questions are in a 'question bank' ... questions asked require you to apply knowledge but easy)
To reiterate, GREAT prof. She is super helpful and really cares about her students. Will answer questions via email and will even let you call her. She is halarious and makes class really interesting by applying her humour and by making the information relevant with examples from the times. Lets you use cheat sheets.
Lectures thorough and easy, but her exams were TERRIBLE. Many of the exam questions were unclear or completely nonsensical. Make sure to ask her during the exams, because she will actually tell you the answer. If you receive a poor mark, go and talk to her and she will let you change your answers. Unfair, but... oh well.
Elaine is one of the best profs Iv'e had this entire year. She's been around the block (around the world actually) and has alot to say. She is hilarious, quirky, but also very effective in her teaching. She is incredibly fair (if not leniant) understanding, and has a genuine wish for her students to succeed. I highly highly recomend this woman.
If you are looking for a shallow and easy class this is the one for you! Dr. Hulse class is made especially for the MTV generation. Lots of videos and on-the-surface-lecturing. She is very easy to approach, and gives nice feedback on papers.
Prof Hulse is extremely lax. We would always start late and we didn't actually get through that much material. (She would need her coffee before we started). Although she gives great personal stories that are hilarious. Overall an easy class even though some of her exam questions are a little bizarre. Fairly interesting though.
Great teacher .. Certainly loves her work, but completely unclear in her exams. The questions were bizarre to say the least!
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!! take a class with her if you have the chance! its easy but you dont feel like you are wasting your time. extremely understanding and such a fun, nice lady!! she has awesome stories too. Nothing bad to say!!! all exams had cheat sheets!!!
Not the greatest... she did have lots of great stories, and kept me interested, but was a bit too lax. Had grad students marking our essays, and they were pretty hard on them. Tests were ok... questions were definately bizzare... read TWICE! PS. you do get cheat sheets, but they don't help much.
Everything about her is ambiguity. Her note and explanation is ambiguous and so do her questions on the exams. Essays are marked tough; her explanation about essay doesn't help much. If you are science type of person who likes direct explanation, stay away from her. She has great stories but that does not mean she is a great prof.
Incredibly easy, I floated through the class which was perfect because it was summer. I love her!
Very interesting class to go to, but I can't say that I actually learned anything from her. Cheat sheets were of no real help on exams and she asked very odd questions - sometimes indepth questions about an example she briefly mentioned once in class??? Most of the exam questions were unclearly worded - not sure what some questions were asking.
No forgiveness on late essays, a late essay = 0%, unfair for a first year class. Unless you are friends with her in which case she'll take late essays. Rarely checks her email, which is a pain before tests, and finals. Asks amiguous questions and questions on stuff mentioned once in class on exams.
Elaine def. has her favorites! Hilarious lectures, starts late and ends early. Attendance isn't a big deal. Make sure you get the notes though they are important for exams! Exams have some random questions - cheat sheet isn't a big help
WOW. Elaine is a crazy prof. i was shocked by her comments and remarks... a lot of them questionable. constantly jokes about trying to get fired. always starts 10 mins late ends 10 early. exams questions ambigious, essays marked fairly hard. cheat sheet not much help for exams either. not much effort needed for this class.
seems to want to play up the "eccentric prof" thing but it wasn't endearing. "questions, comments, concerns" got REALLY old, as did remarks about hating to teach 1st year classes and wanting to be fired. allows cheat sheets on exams, but they are only helpful to a point -- many questions on obscure examples that she only briefly mentioned in class.
This is one of the worst classes I've taken in university after 4 years. She thinks she's funny, but it just gets annoying. I wish she would take a more academic stance on the material--she tells lots of personal stories but they do not aid understanding. The textbook is interesting, but you'd be better of reading it on your own-she adds nothing
i thought this was one of the easiest classes i have taken in my 3 years of university! if you show up to class take notes you'll pass with flying colours. She does mark Hard agreed and the cheat sheet really doesnt work!but shes a great PROF!!she is a very flexible person! she gave my whole entire class a essay extension of almost a month!
She is great. She is pretty funny, and willing to help you out alot if you need it. She uses videos quite a bit which are really intersting. Overall great teacher. If I need more Anthropology I would definitely go with her again.
I found her pretty annoying, she tried so hard to be weird and funny but it was just lame. She outlined the essay very well and marked easily if you followed the format. Tests were waaayyy harder than expected thought.
ANNOYING! hard to take at 9:30 in the morning so i skipped class most the time. i was short 13 days of notes and still came out with a 80% tho. essays are super easy and fun reading. BUT exams were weird and uselss. she annoyed me to no end, but im signed up to take another easy class from her next semester.
She's a very easy prof to take a class from; meaning, you'll get a great mark. it's impossible not to. However, she's a terrible instructor and I will retain absolutely none of my knowledge after the class ends.
For those of you thinking of applying into Education, she may do your interview. I had her for Anthro and I also had her for my Education interview. Just a heads-up because although there are no interviews this year they will be brining them back.
Such a ridiculous lady. A very entertaining professor who teaches the class like it's a high school one. Definitely a fun prof, though don't expect to be able to slack off and still do good. Lots of assignments and readings!
I loved Prof. Hulse! I thought she was very entertaining and knew her material well. She made a very boring subject tolerable. Loved that she didn't require a term paper, just 4 "Exit Slips" that you could write before class and just copy out into an exam booklet. She was a very nice woman and I hope I encounter her again in my studies.
Had her for a night class. Rarely got out early. Exams were open book and she usually gave the exam questions ahead of time -- you could even write your essays ahead of time and then just re-write them out during the exam. Easy, laid back prof. who is very approachable. Attend class, do the readings and you should sail right through.
Super nice and fun..clearly has a lot of knowledge and experience. Very laid back and understanding but you still learn A LOT. All open book exams which requires you to apply knowledge rather than regurgitate memorized facts and figures. Definitely take one of her classes!
Took this class simply for my social science requirement, came out of it with a great interest in anthropology.Elaine is a great prof, very nice lady. You really do need to show up to class as she does course work pretty much every day, but just do the reading and the coursework and you should have no problem getting an 80. Definitely take her class.
I personally loved Elaine. If you like having interesting classes with acting out and watching movies... open book exams and what not... take her class. She makes it fun and interesting by adding in her fun random comments. She also helps a lot with reading your essays before hand to tell you what you should add to boost your mark
Elaine is a very interesting proff! Any tests are open book and she usually gives you a lot of the questions in class beforehand. Only problem is it's very hard to recieve a great grade on writing assignments, but you can go directly to her for feedback! Wouldn't take anymore ANTH classes, but it was an enjoyable class.
I LOVED Elaine. She was a hoot and really got me interested in the subject. Ask her about the guy in the VW Beetle who picked her up...
She is a very interesting prof!! Her exams are hard and long, but going to class is definitely worth it :)
I have taken a few classes with Elaine. She can be an engaging and fun professor, but you must do every assignment and make sure you are a good writer if you want to do well in her classes. She doesn't want "coffee shop answers", but rather answers with weight to them. Open book exams, but lots of writing.
Elaine is the best! She is funny, random, and very approachable. She makes class fun and allows cheat sheets for her quizzes and midterms, as well as the textbook depending on what you're writing. This class has made me much more interested in Anthropology, but probably just because the prof is wonderful. If you can take her class, do it!!!!!!
Weirdest prof. Couldn't stand listening to her. Classes were painful felt pointless cause 95% of exams come from the textbook and the exams are difficult. Assignments however were ok, it helped my grade. Lots of note taking which was annoying cause she took exam questions from book. She tells u she likes to take questions from beginning of paragraphs and chapter summaries and from pictures with captions ! Exams had lots of words I didn't know so the dictionary would have been handy.
Pretentious.
Elaine is a touch off the wall, there is no doubt about that. But she knows her stuff, and her personal tales are not only (usually) entertaining, but also relevant. If you don't do your reading, you won't do well. I'd definitely take one of her classes again.
she is amazing and i would reccommend anyone to take a class from her!!! one of the best i have had!
I did not enjoy her class at all. She was sarcastic, arrogant and difficult to respect. I didn't look forward to the class. As a person and a professor, I did not appreciate Elaine. It is too bad since the topic of the class was interesting but I couldn't stand having her as professor again.
Took the class to boost my mark. Which it did, but required a lot more work than anticipated. Buy the textbooks (Didn't fully read one, was only for essays). Write notes from movies, attend class (doesn't post notes, only outlines). Wasn't difficult if you put time in. Cheatsheet/dictionary for all tests very useful. She's an interesting woman haha
BEST TEACHER AT THE UNIVERSITY. highly, highly recommend her, she made every class fun and interesting, she always gave clear guidelines and expectations. She is a delight and over a wonderful person. she takes a person interest in all her students and takes the time to know them. Absolutely loved her!
Awful prof. She was unclear and would frequently go off on tangents with individual students while the rest of the class was left to wait for her to get back on track. Difficult to get ahold of. Impossible to understand the questions in the mid term and final. Vague. Rude. Unclear. Frazzled.
Elaine is VERY interesting and interested in helping students - but only if the students put in the effort. She is no-nonsense & won't carry you through her class, but if you ask for help she will put the time & effort into helping you.
Very, very weird. Goes on tangents, trash talks students, and does this wierd thing where she sucks on her ring finger. I just couldn't take another class from her.
Elaine is cool. She's very funny and interesting. DO NOT miss her lectures though, as she tells you everything you need to know in the lectures. I've had a few too many pretentious profs, Elaine is not one of them...She's just a little odd. Grading is fair, and exams fairly easy (especially if you attend class).
Super easy class, with fun and interactive lectures. Show up to the lectures, and you'll pretty much be good. Tests are ridiculously easy, and if you have any idea whats going on you'll be able to pass. Same with the in-class essays; follow the format she gives and you're basically guaranteed an 80% or higher.
Elaine's a great prof and makes lectures interesting. The class is pretty easy with two midterms and a non-cumulative final. With a little effort you'll be able to pull off an 80%, just be sure to go to class as it covers everything you'll need to know.
ALL OVER THE PLACE. Put clearly, she makes no sense. Sure it's "nice" that you're allowed to bring in cheat sheets for exams, but they will be of little help because many of her questions just do not make sense andor were not actually taught in class. She doesn't even know her facts -- for example, Jewish people are not patrilineal!! Retire, lady.
Elaine was a great prof who grasped students' attention and made lectures fun. The grading criteria was great, as there are two in-class essays (that you bring in and write ahead of time) and two midterms.
Taken classes from Elaine for 3 years now. Love her. She can be a little weird but it engages students and makes learning fun. Lots of personal stories, but they pertain to the teachings, so pay attention! I would absolutely take more classes from Elaine! Clear on what she expects and how she grades.
It was a UofR face-to-face class! Awesome class!!!!! My second year, and this was my favourite class so far!
After 7 full semesters of university classes, she has to be 1 of the worst profs I have experienced. There was a significant gap between lecture notes and textbook material, and she constantly went off on personal story tangents that were not necessary. Her subliminal arrogance and rudeness were unbearable. Retire lady, for both our sakes.
Elaine is a hilarious lecturer who is very clear on what she wants. Uses great examples so you can easily understand the material. Must read the textbook for the multiple choice and true/false tests. She had two in class essays on two case studies. If you put a little bit of work in it's easy to get a good grade.
Lectures and Slideshows did not correspond. Slideshows were very vague and hard to understand when going back to study. Struggled to understand the correct material to study for exams, therefore did get the results was hoping for. In-class essays were any easy mark booster. Stories were interesting but did not pertain to the material what so ever.
She is clear about what she expects from you. Most of her personal stories illustrate the point she is trying to communicate. Exams are mostly from in-class notes but she gives notes as a very reasonable pace. I found this a must-attend class as the slides don't always make sense if you don't hear the explanations with them. I enjoyed the course.
Elaine is definitely not the prof to take. The power points have no correlation to the textbook. She will go off on rants that you think will be relevant to testing and then never appear on the tests. I found her to be very rude and almost a little "off" I definitely will not be taking her class again.
Elaine is fun and spunky. She tells a lot of personal stories that relate to the material and make it more interesting. Great prof.
Prof. Elaine Hulse has this thing where she writes class instruction on a blank word document on the projector for us to read but then when shes done writing it, she says it out loud anyway. A little counter-productive if you ask me.
Terrible. Goes off topic constantly. Too many useless videos. What she teaches in class does not appear on the tests. Read the text book inside out and you'll do okay.
Awesome prof, entertaining (especially great for night classes). Cares about the individual students and wants them to do well. Every class has the same structure: notes and then an assignment of some kind. Tests and assignments were all open book. If you get a different answer than the right one on a midterm, she'll probably give you a mark anyway
Amazing professor, tries to learn all the students names, and has extremely simple guidelines. Quite entertaining, most of her stories apply to the material. Read the textbook (even a once through) and you'll do perfectly fine in her class. Showing up is suggested (she does powerpoints, with no content, so you have to write/type it).
Elaine is a great prof! She really cares about your mark. She is well traveled and has lots of great stories. You have to come to class because she does not post notes, only blank powerpoint slides. She also does not post your grades up ever, but she hands back everything with your grade on it. You also get cheat sheets for everything! Recommend!!!
Elaine brings a great environment to class. Very approachable and willing to help as long as you ask! She gives empty powerpoints so you have to attend lectures to fill them in, but her classes are interesting and pretty chill. In-class assignments are good mark-boosters, as well as the in-class essays. Textbook is a must for the tests!
I regret taking this class this year. Out of all the professors I've ever had, she's on my worst list. Her lectures aren't helpful at all. She expects too much for a 100 level class. Doesn't give clear instructions and talks about irrelevant stuff that's not related to anything in anthropology. Wanna pull down your mark? Take her.
honestly if you are looking for a class that is inclusive and you can just sit and listen to this is great or skip im not one for lectures but Elaine gives great hilarious stories to connect with it. amazing woman and the final was easy very chill. shes a teacher who cares about her student more than the school system. would 100 percent recommnend.
I enjoyed her class. If you ask what is done of you, you will succeed in her class. The lectures do get a bit long but she is funny! Both the midterm and final are open book and they do take the full time allotted for them. Read the readings before the exams and you will be good! She cares about her students, I would recommend her!
Worst prof i have ever had. Her notes were incoherent and made very little sense. She has no idea how to use any kind of online tool (i.e. blackboard for grades or essay prompts). She often rambled during lectures/started lectures late. Her marking seems to be completely random. If you ask her why you got a certain grade she will not answer.
I love Elaine. She is a great prof, she knows her stuff, and she is super funny. Her classes are quite a bit of work, but with that said its reasonable. She takes the time to learn her students names, and jokes around with them. Super passionate about her job. 10/10 recommend her. Her assignments are interesting, and her lectures are too.
Best prof ever! She keeps class interesting with her fun personality. You have to attend class because she doesn't post the lectures and does a lot of in class work for marks, but it's not hard. Everything is open book.
she is awesome
Definitely the best prof out there, don't miss your chance to have your uni days less depresso from Elaine's class
Attendance is mandatory for the in-class assignments, and I'd suggest going to class since she has fill in the blank PowerPoints. She's really funny, and I loved her way of lecturing. However, she does mark somewhat hard on the assignments. A bit unclear on instructions sometimes as well. Would definitely take again, she made anthropology very fun.
Shes hilarious and I found her class really fun!;
Elaine was an amazing teacher, however, she can get sidetracked very easily. Her class does require attendance because she has fill-in notes and often she will throw at you a quiz scheduled for a later date, but their not hard at all. She is a character and makes anthropology quite interesting, would absolutely take another class with her!
Very interesting prof! Gives cheat sheets for examines which makes the examines a little harder.
Elaine is the kind of prof that will make learning fun. She is funny and passionate about what she teaches. Her tests and assignments are fair and she makes an effort to talk to and joke around with her students. I definitely recommend her!
She is very unorthodox, points out the issues of her own presenting and in which anthropological perspectives they are swayed, she is very easy going with marking but tests random theories in readings.
Elaine is probably one of the nicest profs I have ever had. Attendance is definitely not mandatory but I recommend going cause she does show videos and has random quizzes. She tells you almost everything that is expected to know for the exams before hand and allows a cheat sheet! its a good class, she makes it interesting.
Elaine is great. She is pretty bold, and says things that are borderline inappropriate, but she's a good prof.
very funny prof. often makes jokes that are sometimes inappropriate, but theyre a breath of fresh air. but she does go off tangent. i mean, out of the whole syllabus, she only covered about 70%. also because she didnt use the entire 50 minutes we all paid for.
Elaine is the best, super funny and made the class super interesting. She called some kid a boomer, always trying to connect with her students. You will definitely need your textbook for this course though!
Daily in class assignments, but these lead to an understanding of content. Very clear in expectations. If you show up you will succeed.
Shocked seeing how many people like Elaine. I have her for INDG 100 and have to say that she is one of the most disorganized and hypocritical profs I have ever had. She does not meet her own deadlines. She sometimes takes weeks to respond to emails or doesn't ever. She promises a week for assignments then posts them two days before they are due.
Very clear and concise notes and flexible with deadlines. She kept me interested and engaged the entire semester and really made the course enjoyable.
Horrible prof. Does not follow the syllabus. Notes are in her own personal jot notes, and hard to understand, there are no recordings of lectures to help clarify notes. Does not post notes on time, posted two weeks of notes 2.5 days before our extremely hard midterm. I was very disappointed in this class that I was looking forward to.
The class was by no means perfect, but was enjoyable overall. Dr. Hulse is quite disorganized (both in lectures and in the organization of the class online) to the point where finding specific information can be quite frustrating. Despite this, Dr. Hulse was clearly caring and accommodating. In short: good prof. Teaching style could use an update.
Don't take this class. The prof is unprofessional and basically just expects you to read the textbook. Lecture time is spent in self-indulgent rants as opposed to teaching material.
Extremely unclear, didn't show up to class until 5 weeks in to the semester, tested on information we were supposed to google, not from information we had been provided. The information that was provided wasn't much better, it looked like it was typed by a 9 year old. I would avoid this class at all costs
Very good teacher overall, who is knowledgeable and funny. Exams are all open book and can be done in group projects and deadlines arent strict.
Dr. Hulse is a great prof who I truly enjoy. I appreciate her positive attitude and sense of humour during lectures. She provides unique ways of providing her assignments that include videos to watch along with the textbook readings. I took the IND 107 and enjoyed her. The assignment load is perfect! Neat lady!
I love Prof. Hulse. She is very interesting and it is really easy to want to go to class and pay attention because she genuinely cares for what she teaches. Some people might find her too weird but at the end of the day she teaches very well. Her assignments and quizzes are easier than most people make it out to be.
Professor Hulse is pretty accommodating and lenient about late assignments but is a pretty strict grader and is very assignment heavy. Often talks about inappropriate and borderline rude things in class unrelated to the content. She is very unorganized which making doing assignments extremely confusing and difficult.
She is the most unorganized professor I've ever had. She contradicts everything she says and is just rude. She says very questionable things about race and talk about her personal problems. She states her political belief which no one cares about. This was the most frustrating class I've ever had and I don't understand how she is still teaching.
I am taking this class right now and this prof has no business teaching this class. She is not qualified this is not her background and it is so disorganized. Would never recommend her.
I cannot wait for this class to end. Elaine is terrible at this class. Has limited knowledge and experience for this course. Disorganized not well done and very frustrating that I paid money for this class.
Elaine is such a cool and hilarious person. I enjoyed her class a lot. She is a very easy marker and often gives out the answers. She is a bit disorganized and chaotic but personally I think it adds to her charm. There are a lot of confusing little pop quizzes and assignments, but like I said if you wait around she will give you the answers.
Interesting prof. Very chaotic and unorganized but still kind and teaches pretty ok. Will give answers for quizzes if you ask or wait for a bit. Also randomly gave fridays off a few times so she could “go home and drink wine”. Her words not mine. Lol
