My advice is not to take this professor. At the beginning of the semester she says that attendence won't be graded, but it does!! You have to go to class to at least do decent in her class. Her test come straight from her lectures, so you have to take good notes if you don't have a good memory. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!
I advise you not to take her class. At the beginnig of the semester she tells you that attendence doesn't count, but it does. Her tests come stright from her lectures, so you have to take good notes unless you have a good memory. There are two books for the course and you have to read what she assigns, its on the tests! Don't take her class!!!!
I loved her. Attendance is not mandatory but she asks you to answer questions on a notecard at the end of about half of her classes and they're graded, but super easy. As long as you take notes you'll do fine. She's really nice and always willing to help you out. Test questions come mostly from lecture. I recommend her!
This is one of the most kind hearted professor's at UTSA. I would STRONGLY reccomend taking her class because she wants everyone to get an A. I did not do my end of the deal and is why I got a C, but she is an awesome teacher!
Thought the class was enjoyable. Had good powerpoints and gave super easy attendance quizzes. Does online quizzes. Exam question set up was kind of confusing at first, but you get used to it. Other than that she tries to get everyone interested in the material, and she has a fun student debate at the end!
Good teacher but you will do lots and lots of reading. However, if you're even slightly interested in Texas History, it'll be interesting. Just read and get good at essays because that'll probably be how the tests are. Just do your assignments and you'll do ok. (C or above).
she is really nice and if you have a question you can go up to her after class for help. You have to read ALOT more than any class iv taken. Also her tests and quizes are tricky
I felt her class was very interesting and fun . To me her test were easy it was just the online quizes that came from the publisher questions not questions she made up
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Texas history should not be that complicated but she definitely makes it more difficult than it has to be. Come to every single class, take amazing notes, and study relatively hard and you will maybe make a C. If she is perhaps teaching a smaller class then her teaching style maybe more effective.
HARD! I love history! But her test and quizes are very short and have "all the above" "None of the above" answer choices. i always fail. Find someone who takes amazing neat notes along with taking your own! do quizes with people. other than that it wasnt THAAAT bad! shes nice and easy to understand just talks fasst!
Texas history is not that hard, but this prof makes it very hard. She tends to focus on ridiculous things like why is Texas exceptional. I didn't want to take the class in the first place and she confirmed that I still don't like Texas hisotry. Avoid her class at all costs.
Dr. Turney is a great teacher. She expects you to be in class and listen to the lecture. You will want to take good notes as her EXAMS are NOT from the book; theya re from lecture. The online reading quizzes are open book/notes/google so they are cake. She is tough, but fair. She talks pretty fast but not too bad. I'd take her again.
I dont know why people are saying her class is hard. All you have to do is just study her terms and concepts and you will be fine ! find someone to work with fo the online reading quiz and trust me you will do fine. She is a very sweet teacher who will answer all your question as soon as she can TAKE HER YOU WILL PASS !
This class is so HARD! You have to show up sometimes, read the assigned material, take tests that she gives half the answers ahead of time and write a 1 paragraph essay for the writing requirement. WWaaaahh! What are you babies complaining about. If you need someone to change you're diaper stay at home with mommy
SHE SUCKS!! SHE HAS WAY 2 MANY BOOKS U HAVE 2 BUY.SHE HAS WAY TOO MANY ASSIGNMENTS.ITS LIKE SHE HAS A.D.D OR SOMETHING CUZ SHE CANT CHOOSE WHICK BOOK SHE WANTS TO REALLY TEACH FROM. SHES A YANKEE TRYIN TO SAY HOW MUCH SHE LOVES TX. TESTS ARE HARD N TRICKY. MUST WIRTE A PAPPER AND DO GROUP WORK N MUST SHOW UP. STAY AWAY FROM HER!! GET ANYONE ELSE!!
If you want a crappy teacher and grades that are NEVER posted in a timely manner then take Dr. Turney. WORSE TEACHER EVER!!!
to comment on the post about the grades, yeah ms. turney is horrible when it comes to grades. i took a final last wk and on the SAME DAY i got my final grade and my semester grade!! but with ms turney the entire class is left wondering what our grades are rite now cuz she hasnt even grade things from the 3rd wk of the semester! RIDICULOUS TEACHER!
Very nice lady, and funny too. I had a hard time at first understanding the material BUT it was my first semester in college when I took her in the Fall of 2008. Very fun to listen to!
She is a very likable teacher and she has a lot to cover in a small amount of time, so she goes very quickly while still making things interesting. The tests are pretty difficult but the reading/essay assignments are pretty simple. You just have to keep up with them. I studied really hard in this class and attended 75% of the time.
Do not take this teacher! She is the the witch of all teachers. There should be a petition to fire her. Its like her priority is to confuse you. for instance, its suppose to be about concepts, but she will ask a question like, who wrote the first almanac? She has numerous assignments and comprehensive exam...save yourself trouble take Lesli Hicks
absolutely worst teacher i have ever had. unclear about assignments, tests questions are worded to confuse and trick students, i found many problems with the correct answers from her reading quizzes, and she is very forgetful and procrastinates with just about everything.
Turney is a horrible prof. On her study guides she says that none of the questions on the tests will be trick questions, and every single one of them are. This is the only class that I can take an online, open book quiz and look up every single question and still get a 40 on it. No EC is offered either and everyone's failing.
Dont know what everybody is complaining about she was the best teacher i ever had! Very clear on the material and smokin hott!!!!!!!!!!
wow...cant believe ppl like her. she is bad. everyone in my class hated her. she is horrible. she has tricky tests and she is late on getting grades. honestly, there are better teachers for history than her.
She is so nice! Yes, her tests are hard and tricky but she'll literally give you the answer if you just ask her. You won't pass the tests if you don't go to class. Her tests have nothing to do with the textbook. It comes straight from her lectures. Overall, she's a great prof! She'll do anything she can to help you pass. Take her for sure!
she not nice. she terible teacher. she sucks. test are hard and she trys tricking you. she is also booring. dont know why anyone would like her.
agree with everyone. she is a bad teacher and the tests are tricky. the thing is, she even says she wont try to trick you, but her tests are anything but. very tricky and hard test and she is a liar.
this teacher is really just as bad as all the other posters have said. the main things are she is booring, late with grades, and test are very hard. take someone else.
Turney ruined history for me. I used to love history but not anymore. Her lectures are really bad. The tests trick you and are really hard. I will never appreciate history anymore. :(
I can't really add on to what everyone has already stated. Her tests are very tricky and very hard. Do yourself a favor and do not take Dr. Turney.
I don't see what everyone is complaining about. Perhaps the only thing really tricky about her is that you have to study from your notes because nothing is out of the book. Her terms and concepts lists + notes + some note cards and you're guaranteed a good grade. Book quizzes are easy too. Ever heard of an index or chapter outlines?
I had her last semester and she is just as bad as everyone has said. I would stay away from her at all costs!
her tests are so ridiculously tricky and hard. she is interesting to hear lecture but makes the class way harder than it really needs to be. stay away from her unless you have a photogenic memory.
shes a bad teacher made the class much harder than it had to be
So disorganized. It may be because its a 5 week course, but my summer 1 history class went fine and organized.
If she could get organized, things might be better. However, because she isn't it ends up being a lot harder than it needs to be.
This is by far the worst teacher i have ever had. she is a liar. she tells you the test wont be hard, but they are anything but. she uses nothing but complicated trick questions. which is funny cuz her reviews and syllabus say no trick questions will be used. there are better teachers than her. utsa will never be a tier one school with her teaching
way disorganized and really bad professor really i dont see how anybody could say they like her. she needs to go back to school to learn how to teach!
I'm a history major with a 4.0. I am an excellent writer and I am a hard working student. I made a D in her class. Worst History teacher ever!!!! DO NOT TAKE. She leaves you in the dark about your grades and then fails you. I've taken many wonderful history classes at UTSA. She is a horrible teacher. Do yourself a favor don't ruin your GPA.
Dr. Turney is an amazing woman. I got into her class to raise my GPA. YES, you might have to read a page or two...NO, you will not die from overwork..take her if you want to learn sumpn new
I do not understand all the heavy (and even mean) criticism--Dr. Turney is great. She tells a good story, will help you through the exam and really has her student's best interest at heart. She is not easy, but you will learn in her class. Exams come from lecture, so be sure to attend class.
Very helpful. Answered emails quickly. She is very smart and knows what she is talking about. A good professor for those who are interested in learning. Showing up to class is important. Pay attention to the lecture and discussions and you should get a good grade. Definitely recommend taking her class.
I am the worst history student and dr. Gurney was 100% helpful and understanding. I can't name how many times I didn't understand an assignment or test and she explained everything perfectly. GREAT professor!
Good Prof-interesting and funny. You do have to think in her class-especially for tests. And you will need to attend her lectures which is okay because they are pretty interesting. The reading is moderate-the text is only for quizzes, but read the other stuff.
She is a good teacher and very kind however she can be quite disorganized and will often have conflicting answers between lectures and tests. Outside of the class room she is always willing to answer questions. I do not recommend taking her for a summer class simply because of information overload that occurs from multiple texts you have to read.
Great Prof--especially if you want to learn to research and write. I have a new appreciation for history because of what I learned in her class. I am also a better writer now. She is not easy, but she is extremely helpful and super interested in seeing you succeed.
I loved this professor! She provides direct information on what she puts on the test. However the course requires a lot of reading and she is very unorganized. Despite those two flaws, I would certainly recommend her for any student.
ehh, she is very scattered brained, im in her class now and she sprung two books and a quiz on us due during dead weak, tests are pretty hard, you definitely need to study alot. over all, lets just say i wouldn't take her class again
This professor IS your ticket to an easy A if you pay attention in class and do the study guides. She uses outlines in class so it's easy to take notes. She provides a study guide for each test which has concepts that are going to show up the test.
Okay, I wouldn't say an easy A you do have to work, but you can catch on to her style pretty quick. Also, she did not spring two books on us it was on the schedule from day 1! And it is dead week (not weak)! I do not think she is scatter brained, I just think she is really intelligent and has her head into many different things at once!
I took History I & II with Dr. Turney. She really knows her history well. The class takes a little work, take very good notes. The test is exactly from her notes. She also helps you if you are confused about a question on the test. I just went up to her during the test and she would lead me to understand the context of the question. Its helpful.
Pretty easy to get an A, there is work but its not hard at all. She is very helpful and sets clear due dates. I would recommend her to anyone.
Dr. Turney is a very helpful teacher. She requires a lot of reading, and the novels she assigns are not easy reads. You can get a good grade is you do the work, but it's a lot. She also takes a long time to grade work, which can hurt you in the long run.
I took her last semester for Post Civil and she was really hard. You need to go to class and do a lot of reading to do well. I studied and still ended up with a D. Exams were hard and the essay parts were graded pretty harshly. I do not recommend her.
I'm majoring in History, and yet this class I'm taking just doesn't make sense half of the time. She jumps around too much! Students as well as myself are frustrated with it. She's a nice teacher but her teaching could use a little help. Her slides need to be updated and her quizzes are way harder than the exam questions. Ridiculous.
Attendance is mandatory, and graded Take free (write what she says) notes and look at the slides later. This is an easy and fun class if you do those two things. Anyone who says it's hard either didn't come to class or doesn't know how to take free notes.
She's boring. I couldn't even pay attention with her bright blue slides with orange font:/ and her power points are pointless...she's rambles and jumps from one thing to another so you can't really keep up. She uses this top hat thing that you have to pay for to count attendance(it's dumb) she doesn't update her slides and video lectures on blackboard like she says she will. She's not interesting and says UMM every other word. No joke. Avoid if possible!
Her class was so disorganized and boring! Did not receive ONE single grade throughout the semester, and her excuse was that she was too tired to grade. As a person, she's a sweetheart, but her grading on essays is harsh and her organization is mediocre. Did I mention the 8 rather large textbooks we had to read? Horrible..
As a freshman I took her and overall it was a pretty difficult class. She is super unorganized and takes forever to get your grades back to you. Made D's on the first two tests I took after studying for days before. Would not recommend this class but if you try you can pass. MUST attend class every day, all the tests are over lectures. Good luck!
She's a HORRID Professor I do not recommend her to anyone. She is very unorganized, and doesn't respond to emails until the day of class. Her tests have nothing to do with the things lectured in class, and not to mention she doesn't grade correctly, and she gets off topic very easy >:(
Dr. Turney is one of the few Professors that I've learned from that are so well spoken, personable, and helpful. Yes, you will work for your grade, but I promise you that it is time well spent.
She's an alright professor, she knows a lot about history but her teaching methods are not the best.
You have to attend class because test questions come directly from the lectures and things she said rather than wrote on the powerpoint. Offers a lot of extra credit and very helpful if you go in and talk to her during office hours. Not an easy class but if you attend SI and pay attention then you can easily get a B or an A.
EASY A. She gives the option to do multiple choice or write the essay. WRITE THE ESSAY. You only need to memorize half the lecture. She's super lenient on the essay. She also gives bonus points. If you are failing, you just didn't make the right choice.
Unless you are an auditory learner, and have an extremely high attention span. this class is not for you.
Terrible teacher with lack of organization. If you need notes, you have to go to class, she also demands a special program for taking attendance. Reading and tests are overly complicated and far too much work. I am an history major and she was really tough. Do not except any replies to emails, never answers them.DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Well she seems to be very knowledgeable about history so that's a plus, but her course is uncoordinated. She assigns homework to be done before you have even covered the chapter. Also, she will tell you "the grades should be out (insert date)" and you can expect her to not follow through with that. Offers essay or multiple choice for exams.
She is a nice enough professor and seems to care about her student, but she is very hard to follow. She gets off topic very easily and seems very unorganized. We have like 5 books we are also reading outside of class and doing assignments on. Due dates are unclear. The class is very unorganized as a whole, and the slide shows do not have test info
I've always been good at History so the class isn't too tough for me, but if you aren't good at history, I would recommend taking a different professor. Dr. Turney is a nice person, but her lectures aren't very helpful. She's always dragging behind the textbook (from which you have plenty of assignments). You also are graded on attendance.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! A lot of timed quizzes that are multiple choice and written based on the 5 books you need. Attendance is a part of your grade . She provides study guides for her hard exams and power points aren't helpful. What ever you do DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!
This class was incredibly disorganized. The professor was never prepared, reading assignments didn't match the syllabus, and often she'd assign entire books last minute giving you days to read 300 pages. Her lectures didn't really matter much to the test material but attendance was mandatory. Journals each week based on the readings.
There's participation and attendance every single day, frequent small group activities, quizzes every 2-3 long chapters and if you want to pass, you're gonna have to teach yourself. I love history, but her lectures are long, too detailed and off topic. Most the things she talks about won't be in the test because she just likes to talk - A LOT.
Easy grader, a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester. Only 2 tests, with the final which can be replaced by the attendance and participation grade. Good lectures, would take again.
GO TO CLASS. Most of her grading is based on participation, so although its boring JUST GO. Do the essay instead of the multiple choice tests, its easier. Just go to class a& the extra credit SI's, I went from a B- to an A, didnt have to take the final & got a 106 on it all because of my participation grade.
She is very nice and passionate about history. The exams require study time, but pretty much reflect the homework. Study guides are given that correlate to the particular exam. Participation is key. It's pretty much mandatory, but you can choose to use the participation grade as your final exam grade. If you do well on the homework, you'll be fine.
I would recommend the essay option for exams.
Her class was a bit boring sometimes, but it was really easy to pass. If you complete all of the assignments, you'll be fine. Some of the exam questions come from the My History Lab quizzes, so make sure you do those. She offers many extra credit opportunities.
Really easy class if you just pay attention. It's just basic facts that you should have learned long before college. She gives the option of an essay or multiple choice for exams. The final is optional and there are ways to earn extra credit. I highly recommend taking her class! Your attendance grade can replace your final grade so go to class!
IF SHE HAS SPOTS LEFT IN HER CLASS TAKE HER!!!! I had Diley first semester and her second and I definitely think she's better than Diley, which says a lot cause Diley is great. You'll only need the book for quizzes. She gives you the option of taking a written exam so if your good at BSing like me it really helps&10 points extra credit on exams
I have had her for two classes now. Both classes were somewhat the same. You have to show up and talk. If you can do all of this you don't have to ta the final. That one last test you don't have to study. Gives out a good amount of homework but they were easy 100%.
She's a fantastic teacher. She lectures to the students rather than reads straight from her powerpoint. With that said, she doesn't include all of her info in the powerpoint to attending class is fairly important. However, if you do the Connect assignments then you'll be pretty well prepared for the exams. She's wonderful, I highly recommend.
If you're expecting an easy class then don't take. I'm a business major with classes like accounting, statistics, economics, etc. and this class is both my most difficult AND time consuming! Expect to purchase 2 expensive textbooks, 8 confusing quizzes, 8 long written assignments, hard exams, and unfair tophat questions. You HAVE to work for grade!
I did not enjoy this class. The lectures were very long and drawing. You will need to do a large amount of extensive reading from two different books- one for the tests, one for the quizzes. Attendance is mandatory as there are in class online questions that go towards your grade. ATTEND SI SESSIONS AND ALWAYS DO THE ESSAYS OVER MULTIPLE CHOICE.
She is so nice, funny and caring. I got an A without reading the textbook once because she covers EVERYTHING in class. Homework is all online, but it's impossible to get anything but 100. Tests are easy, she lets you choose between the multiple choice and essay- I chose essay every time and got all A's. Taking her again second semester!
Dr. Turney knows her stuff, she may appear to be an easy A but she is not. You have to work for your grade in her class, participate in discussions and do your reading.
Really enjoyed this class. There are usually one or two online homework assignments every week. She asks questions and takes attendance everyday and if that is good enough at the end of the semester, counts as your final exam grade. For each exam, you can either take the multiple choice test or write an essay over one of the three prompts given.
As for test you have an option to either take a 50 multiple choice or an essay. Suggestion, choose the 50 questions because my essay grader was grading everyone like crap BTW there are 3 test total. No final as long as you go to 4 SI sessions! Learn smart connect homework. Top Hat will freaking haunt you! Buy it go 2 class and be quick cuz ur timed
She gives an INSANE amount of extra credit, go to 4 SI sessions and it's an extra 20 points overall, each test has 5 2-point bonus questions, and she gave us an extra credit quiz. If your attendance and participation grade is satisfactory to you, you can use that grade in place of the final. interesting lectures, would definitely take her again.
Lectures are long and boring and she puts the powerpoints online, but go to class because of attendance and participation. At the end of the course if you like your attendance grade she subs it for your final exam grade because they're worth the same % Tests aren't easy and there's ALOT of information covered.
Test or essay your choice Attendance on tophat so show up, i took her twice received an A both times Great professor good lectures moved my test 3 because i had another test that day and got a few extra days to study. very helpful and she is always in her office if you need any help. Extra credit for going to SI;no final if you have good attendance
She's a really good teacher. Class is just powerpoint presentations and videos. Read your book and you'll pass. Dont skip class if you want a good grade cause attendance is counted and can be used in the place of a final exam. She gives 4 redundant written assignments that can either lower or raise your grade.
She is an amazing professor ! She always gives off credit, provides an option to opt out of the final exam as long as you attend all the lectures and is funny.
Take her. period. If you have to take a history, take her. EASIEST A. if you dont do well on the exams but attend every class and participate in tophat, she replaces your attendance grade for your final grade. So if you have a 50 test avg and a 100 attendance avg, your final grade will be a 100. Attendance is mandatory, because of tophat!!!
Dr. Turney is a great professor. A little unorganized at times but made me really enjoy Texas history. She doesn't make you memorize pointless dates or names. Everyone has a choice on their exams to either write an essay or take a multiple choice test. Her lectures and stories during the lecture are fantastic!
I took Dr. Turney for my six history credits, and I'd recommend her to anyone. She can be a little unorganized at times, but is an overall solid professor. She offers extra credit for basically everything, and an A in her classes is pretty easy to get.
An amazing Professor who really has the best interest for her students. Participation matters because you're required to purchase TopHat for attendance, BUT if you're satisfied with your attendance grade then you don't have to take the final. Lots of extra credit. A bit unorganized, but that is easily over looked considering how easy this class is.
Dr. Turney knows her stuff! Great teacher, easy to get along with. Tons of reading, so do it in advance and you will be fine. Many books are on Audible, so you can use that before class starts to get a head start! Attendance is key** No exam for this course, but had to write an extensive paper (10-12) pages, but plenty of time.
Great professor! lectures are entertaining so class is fun. For the exams You can choose to write an essay or take a multiple choice test. I recommend to multiple choice because they are very easy and come straight from lectures and book. attendance is for a grade and she uses top hat to keep track. would take her again if I need a history credit!!
Turney was so dope all her grades are from homeworks, test, and attendance. you can use your attendcance grade as your final exam grade so probably only 10 people took the exam and the rest of us got an A for the final exam. Tests are pretty easy if you know the review, all homeworks online just completion.
EASY A! Counts your attendance grade as your final exam grade so as long as you come to class you wont have to show up or study for a final. Essay style exam is easy to ace if you go to SI. If you attend 4 SI sessions you get extra points added to your overall grade. Online work is expensive but you do it till you get a 100 so it's an easy grade.
Dr Turney assigns a lot of reading, and if you do not do said reading you will not do well in her class. She is lenient, but do not try to take advantage of that because she is not a pushover. She is very knowledgeable of her subject matters.
I loved Dr. Turney's class! Although it tends to be lecture heavy, her classes can be interesting and engaging. Her class is not hard unless you make it hard, so keep up to date with assignments, read, and pay attention! She takes attendance daily, so be prepared! Very lenient, but don't take advantage of her! Overall, it's a class worth taking!
Don't skip and do not not do the homework. It's nice that she doesn't make the exams weigh that heavily on your grade but to make up for it homework is right behind as well as attendance and the tophat quizzes. But overall not a difficult class.
She is very passionate about any topic that she lectures over. In my class, we had the option to take a multiple choice test or write an essay over 3 possible prompts. A majority of the grades come from homework from the online textbook, which is a completion grade. I really recommend taking her class if history isn't your best subject!
She's a good history teacher to take when you have a ton of general education requirements to take, meaning her class is so easy, you can take 5 other classes while taking hers. She's too nice with the extra credit, and you literally can't fail the homework. Take the essay version of her test, not multiple choice. Plz. I got an A+ both semesters.
I loved her so much I took her for Texas history and American history. She loves her job and sometimes doesn't finish lectures but she is passionate about it. You use top hat for attendance and questions and if you have a good grade you can use that for your final grade. She also offers essay tests or multiple choice tests which is really great.
Before taking this class I enjoyed history and looked forward to taking the class. 4 weeks into this class, I now dislike history because I will associate reading history with this professor. She is the most unorganized professor I've ever met. Her lectures, in class quizzes all seem to be her rough draft as the information is usually wrong.
She does not know anything. Her organizational skills are nonexistent and she doesn't understand technology. On top of an ill-prepared power point presentation, she gets off topic and tries to be friendly and "hip" and it comes off as extremely annoying. If you take her you are signing up to teach yourself, I'm literally more of a professor than her.
Really good professor! She obviously loves history and a great teacher for Texas History. She doesn't expect you to memorize a bunch of dates, names, and facts. Tests are based on concepts and understanding why something in history happened. Offers essay or multiple choice for exam.
I. LOVE. THIS. PROFESSOR. I absolutely hate history, but she makes lectures engaging. She assigns few homework assignments, but the questions on assignments ARE ON THE EXAMS. She provides two test options, essay or multiple choice, and she PROVIDES STUDY GUIDES AND ESSAY PROMPTS!!!! Easy class if you put in the effort and attend class!!
Professor Turney is a wonderful teacher who wants her students to succeed. She is accessible outside of class and offers extra credit. Her tests are lecture based so I recommend to take notes on what she says, which makes it important to attend her class every day. Also, attendance is crucial due to the I clicker questions.
She is a great professor! Gives the option of an essay or multiple choice for every exam, sets up grading so that you can skip the final if you get enough participation point (which is super easy to do). She can be disorganized and gets behind in lectures, but only because she enjoys talking about history. Go to class, exams are very lecture heavy
Often re-does schedule, which throws off when assignments are due, unclear on powerpoints, but expects you to be able to take notes on everything she says, writes confusing questions where there is no clear answer and refuses to change the way in which they are written
Turney's class is an attainable A as long as you just show up to class & do the online quizzes which are really easy. 4 exams and if you have a good attendance grade you can use that grade in place of taking a final exam. She gives easy extra credit questions on all exams & you can choose between multiple choice or essay option (choose essay!!)
Tests are heavily based on lecture. Lots of homework but bearable. iClicker matters & Packback matters because those could get you out of the final. She offers multiple choice or essay, take the essay. Kind of disorganized. Easy A if you stay on top of things and go to class.
Turney is the worst professor I've ever had at UTSA. She's extremely unorganized. Final grades were due and she hadn't even given us our second exam scores back much less posted our final grades on asap. If you're looking just to pass I guess it's an okay class. But if you're looking to make an A even if you're a good ass student don't take her.
I took Dr. Turney's summer history course (civil war to present). I really enjoyed her lectures to me honest. During the lecture she would include stories about things she's experienced relating to the material. Her stories help breakup the monotony of lecturing about history facts. Do the work, which isn't much, study a bit and you'll pass.
I never even bought the online homework that was required for class and I managed to get a B+ in the class because of extra-credit opportunities. She lets you pick whether you want to take the essay or multiple choice version of tests. The essays are easy to write and bring your grade up. Boring class, and attendance is a grade, but easy GPA boost.
Tests aren't too bad, take the essay. You get the questions beforehand and you can bring a notecard to the exams so you can write your outline on it. Show up and do the I Clicker questions and you won't have to take the final. Lectures kind kind of drag on but hey it's a freshman history class so what do you expect.
For our research proposal, she repeated a lot of the sections and didn't fully explain them. She also doesn't teach key concepts such as how to make footnotes or properly cite yet she'll grade harshly for not knowing them?? She's super nice but as a professor, she's not that great. Also, don't expect for your grades to be in until last minute.
Dont take this class!!! While Dr. Turney is a cool person her reader graders will ruin your life. They are incompetent and will fail you. Your work will take months to be graded, and some of it will go missing. I shouldnt have choose this course or this professor and beg you not to make the same mistake I did.
Turney is a kind person, but she is horribly disorganized. There were many weeks within this class where we had no idea what was going on, and what assignments were actually still happening. grading took months. How are you supposed to improve your writing if you write 3 papers before you receive a grade for the first one?
Dr Turney is extremely disorganized and unprepared in regard to everything. Most every student in my class taught by her said the same thing. She does not grade according to her instructions. She uses reader graders for everything, she changes assignments constantly and last minute. She forgets to post documents. Awful experience and Professor.
20% of your grade is showing up to class and participating. She is super disorganized and takes forever to grade assignments. Tests are extremely specific and cover the book and lectures. The book questions are super dumb but not really hard. Do not miss any of those because they bring your grade down a lot when you do. She's nice and funny though.
Really a sweet woman who does an amazing job lecturing.
Dr. Turney is great. She is passionate about history and her lectures express it. If you do not come to class or have a friend that is taking notes for you, unfortunately, you probably won't do so well on the multiple-choice test. But she also offers an essay question for test credit so you could possibly do that. Homework is easy. Highly recommend
Nice lady!Instead of an exam of 50 questions YOU CAN TAKE AN ESSAY!Even if you arent an amazing writer try it. She lets everyone have a 5x7 index card for the test. She also put the 2-3 potential prompts a few days before. So honestly make a thesis for all and write in index card. That way you'll be prepared for any. Im not good at history &all As!
Turney is nice, but extremely disorganized. I understand that she didn't really have a choice bc of the pandemic, but she doesn't know how to use blackboard so be prepared to look in 5 different places for what you need. She loves history which helps with the digestion of what is usually a boring topic. Homework is weighed too heavily.
Shes pretty solid ngl, pay attention is class & study!!!
Mrs. Turney is a great professor! I took summer History 1301. The class has a lot of work but it's expected in a summer course. I learned summer courses may not be for me as I work full time. She expects you to do your work and present on assignments. It is not a hard class but she does require a lot of work to be done. Overall I enjoyed the class!
Just seemed like this class was unorganized, things from the beginning of the semester got graded at the end of the semester. She would also add assignments due that week in the middle of the week. The class consists of lecture videos, lecture quizzes, and writing assignments. We also had to read a book and did weekly quizzes about it.
Most disorganized class I've endured in COVID, she doesn't know how to use blackboard and her instructions are just generally confusing. We did a lot of assignments that led to nothing (smartbooks, written assignments) but no test so if you're willing to do a bunch of pointless busy work it may be worth it to you.
The most noted trait of Dr. Turney is her disorganization and I wouldn't take it if COVID is still around. Her assignment instructions are very vague and she grades hard for someone who doesn't grade assignments on time and provides a syllabus with no dates. Be prepared to check BB early because she doesn't give a heads up on assignments. Good luck
She does not grade anything on time and have never replied to any of my emails. Everything about her class is disorganized and she did not follow her syllabus.
She was always assigning way more work than my more difficult classes and most of it was busy work that didn't teach me anything. Turney was frequently unavailable ( I don't believe she had ANY office hours this semester ) and while we had to accept her excuses for being unavailable, she often reminded students she doesn't take excuses. DO NOT TAKE
Exams will kill you. Her exams are cumulative, so it includes stuff from module 1. If you miss a test, the retake is an essay, oh and the exams HAVE TO BE TAKEN ON FRIDAY BEFORE 10 P. discussion due Fr & Sun. Quizzes due Wed and Ch. homework due Wed/Thurs. And 4 exams. It's easy to fall behind, especially with stuff due throughout the week. AVOID.
The workload for this class is just too much, homework can take hours to finish but you're only given 2-3 days to do it so so it can be hard to pace yourself especially if you have other classes. The lectures contain the questions for the quizzes you'll take so you're forced to watch them. It's not a horrible class, it's just very tedious.
Literally just do smartbook and the quizzes are easy. She's also a very nice person and I enjoy the way she teaches.
She's really nice but her tests are all cumulative. She gives homework weekly and its a lot so you can't get ahead and its short notice. Her tests ARE SO HARD and she's had to curve us several times. Her tests are also extremely lecture heavy so take good notes. On the bright side she knocks out your 3 lowest quizzes. But I wouldn't recommend.
There is a LOT of work to do every week. So much reading. You read the textbook, then primary sources, AND watch lecture videos. Nothing against the teacher, just a lot of work for a basic history class. I also find history boring, so maybe I'm biased. But, overall, maybe too much work. But, that also means more grades, so low ones aren't so bad.
The professor is absolutely not tech savvy and everything is posted on google docs. You have to buy an expensive online textbook that is completely pointless imo. You just need it to complete long hw assignments that are only for 10 points. All of her recorded lectures and other materials are from past years.
There is just way too much work for this class, her class is also very disorganized. Her tests are just way too hard and she grades discussions and written assignment really hard. It is not worth talking this class at all especially when they are much easier professors out there.
I do not usually do this, but this is easily the most disorganized class I have ever taken, learning is difficult, I have to buy an expensive textbook for a 5-week class, not a tech savvy which result in doing homework a chore. I love History but taking this class and doing the work made it unfun. If do not want question pls don't take this class
She was pretty easy just watch the videos and answer questions simply.
Class is easy and straight forward. Online courses are easy to navigate and all materials are provided, watch a lecture video and take a short quiz. There are extra credit opportunities.
