you have to get over the "mmmmmkay" but if you can she's a pleasure. excellent prof.
Readings are intense, but the testing is easy. Her lectures are straightforward but BORING. I did well in her class, but learned nothing. It's all memorization. I'm never taking another class with her, it's a waste of money and brain.
She's one of the best profs ever. Very clear, good lectures, and a really nice lady! I would DEFINITELY take another class with her.
not bad. boring but ok
Best teacher I've had so far. She is not boring at all. In fact if you can do the readings(you are at mcgill!), go to class and put your effort into her class, you will do amazing! She explians everything and makes always had good lectures
Good teacher..
Best prof i have had so far. Very interesting and clear. Alot of readings, but all extremely interesting. Loved going to her class!
new at this, but a very ggod try. dfinately tries to support learning anvironment. die hard feminist so watch out ....
i have taken SOCI 247, 321 and 455 with weiner... she is very helpful when it comes to essay's... her reading load is a little heavy but all in all my favourite professor at mcgill, she's young and full of life and loves what she does so that makes a huge
In terms of the McGill-Professor Quality rating, she's definitely in the high 80's to low 90's. You really cannot go wrong with her, permitting you do a minimal amount of effort. Good to look at, clear, concise, and not that challenging. Even though she's a feminist, I know she needs a nice, young..
she sucks

Well, I like her. I am a guy, and I ask more questions than anyone else in the class, and she answers me equaly... So I'd say she is cool. Just TOO MUCH reading... too much material for a 200 level course.
this is an extremely easy class for mcgill standards. she is clear in class, she gives you the terms needed to learn for the midterm and final. she gives you the essay q's she offers to read your essays in advance - she is passionate and well informed. take the class - easy A - provided you're awake
Very good prof and tries really hard to make an effort to make class interesting. Brings in tons of movies... Work and read all the readings you'll do just fine.
horrible professor.. worst i have had in my time at mcgill.. avoid this class.. huge waste of your time and funds. reena the ta is just as useless and unknowledgable.
Course was pretty good and straightforward. Come to class, read the huge coursepack and you'll do fine. But she sometimes talks too fast!!
brutal class. soooooooo much unecessary reading and the class is so boring. definitely not worth your while and not even easy.
a seminar class with 20 people - awesome class! my favourite of the semester. she's really nice, and though there's lots of reading, it's worth taking the class because it's so interesting. food! movies! fun!
Most of the people complaining are just guys who are upset that she tells them "inconvenient facts." Professor Weiner provided us with good course content (reading and class time) and responded to any questions raised in a clear, forthright manner. One of the best in Soc at McGill.
Amazing, amazing, amazing! Definitely must take if you are interested in gender and work. Weiner is stimulating, interesting and it is actually fun to go to class. If you do your work, she rewards you. She is not a prof who tricks her students in exams like some at McGill. Trust me, take her class
She really sucks! Never ever another class with her... she's rude and arrogant..

great professor...i've taken her for a few classes and she is a lot better in smaller settings, but is pretty fair on all accounts.
Great prof, takes the time to know her students. She is extremely fair in her grading too. If you do the work necessary, she will reward you for it! Try to take all of her classes!
Amazing!!! Very helpful and stimulating. Take all of her classes, you will not be dissapointed. She is one of the very few profs at Mcgill that actually cares about her student's success. I sincerely am grateful to her.

She can go very fast! She's a good teacher overall but the course just didn't interest me.
Stuck in her views and isn't very open to others' opinions. Says "okay" every other word. Her classes are easy if you just study your lecture and readings notes. Slides aren't enough to study from, you must go to class!
Her multiple choice section on her exams are killer! Best to study thematic ideas and do well on the essay portion.
Excellent prof, best in the department! Can't wait to take another class with her
Funny and Engaging. I really enjoyed this couurse and Prof. Weiner made it enjoyable.

Let's all be honest: she is an awful teacher. She goes off on tangents and is generally BORING!
Very happy that I took her class!!!
Professor Weiner is incredible. Take her Class! You will not regret it! If you have a slight interest in sociology, you will enjoy her class =)
Her slides are not very helpful, so you have to attend class. The exams are pretty difficult and if you want a good grade you have to do the readings! Overall, she is a very good lecturer and keeps you interested with her anecdotes. The material is pretty good if you are interested in gender. It seemed the class avg was between a B and B+.
I've taken 2 classes with her and she is great. Clear, quick, witty, perfectly organized, interesting, very fair on exams, and readings (may be heavy) but are interesting and on point. She's just awesome and is available if you need her.
VERY nice and funny prof!! smart, clear and her class is very enjoyable. make sure you do ALL the readings.
Elaine is a very good prof. If you attend her lectures and complete the readings, you will do very well in the class. I would definitely take another course with her in the future.
Very clear, goes quick, evaluations are fair. I found that the readings are quite heavy for this course, and they are really really important for the evaluations. The T.A. was really nice and funny! In general, this course was enjoyable with Weiner.
class is interesting. However, reading materials are extremely heavy. she makes lame jokes. Her MC questions are dumb ( on specific details ). grammar counts heavily for essay so if English isn't your first language then you are doom. worst class ever.
I admit there's sort of a lot of reading but it can be an easy class if you put in a little effort. Midterm and final were mostly from slides, which she posts. I like her personality I thought she was funny!
Her exams were very tricky, especially her midterms. She asks a lot from the readings, so make sure to read. A hardcore feminist, and grades grammar in her essays, probably more than the content.
The teacher gives interesting lectures but speaks fast and the course is not recorded. The exams are fair but the readings are heavy. You must do the readings to pass with a good grade!
I had her family class and i really enjoyed it :) The readings where very heavy, but for the most part they were interesting. If you don't do the readings, the change of passing is very small but if you read them and take good notes, you will do fine. I've never had the most fun writing an essay for her speech assignment. If you can take her class
Prof. Weiner's lectures are so much fun. The topic is very interesting in the context of family life, and dating. Overall, I learnt a lot of interesting things that I can easily associate to my everyday life. Readings do appear on the exam, but TA was helpful during conferences and prepares you well. Multiple choice, short & long answers.
There are a lot of readings and you have to stay on top of them if you want to pass. Conferences help a lot to prepare for the exams so attend them. If you go to lectures, take good notes, do the readings, and go to conferences, it's a pretty easy A. Most challenging part was the paper IMO but if you're good at writing you'll be fine.
She is nice and the lectures are great, but a little bit over feminists. You will have to write a big paper work, and do a lot of readings. Attend conferences, it will help you. Final was hard
Amazing class; I love this prof! This is the second time I take her, and honestly her lectures are so good! I found she was pretty tough on grading though. Also, for previous commenter, there was plenty of articles from this decade! and this isn't a sexual diversity class; its on gender which is what it focuses on. Work hard, you'll be fine!
Smart professor but any potential for me having respect her was overturned by her conceited attitude. My own experience and hearing from others has taught me that she tends to undertake a very derogatory manner when engaging with a student. The epitome of a white, liberal feminist - please do outside readings to nuance your understanding.
Prof. Weiner speaks very fast so you need to be able to type/write very quickly. There is also a ton of reading in this course including a textbook, course pack, and online articles. The midterm and final were very specific and detail oriented. The material is interesting, but information is heavy.
Lots of readings! Many carry the same themes make sure you read them all and go to lecture because you will be tested on specifics. Powerpoint slides posted but useless. Midterm and paper each 30%, fairly graded but detail orientated for the MC. Can get an A if you know your stuff, don't let it slide bc it seems simple. Great explanations of topics
Do not take this course unless you absolutely must! Elaine is a nice person and she tries to make the material interesting, but her lectures are extremely redundant and she relies on research that is very dated. I genuinely gained nothing from taking this class. She is also very picky in her grading so it isn't easy to get an A.
would never take her as a prof again. crazy amount of readings and exams based on small details of the readings.
She assigns an unreasonable amount of readings, grades tough, and is derogatory with her feedback. Exams are detail oriented so you cant skim on the readings, either. You need to know each theorist and each of their works by name, as well as the theories themselves. She assigned a 4500 word take-home final during the COVID pandemic. Avoid!
I really enjoyed SOCI 247 - it was really interesting and the prof Weiner was really intriguing. I found the structure of the class really enjoyable i.e. the conferences with the lectures and found the grading relatively easy. I would take this class again.
She tries, but honestly is just not a very good educator or evaluator in my opinion. Feedback on work is limited and condescending, no rubrics are provided. a lot of assignments are 'summaries' or 'think about it responses' but these responses have very few guidelines and are marked harshly. Lectures are redundant and all data.
She's very kind. a bit heavy on essays but even if you don't do the readings, you can still get a decent grade.
Overall I was extremely disappointed with this professor. To begin, her instructions on grading are extremely unclear. She uses this against you, claiming that you didn't follow instructions or "didn't answer the question how I wished" even though this a critical thinking class. She gives unclear feedback. Avoid this professor.
Professor Weiner is a very harsh grader and does not offer students a grading rubric with their assignments. Lectures are boring and the material is dry, avoid this class.
Really disappointing class. It is all based on extremely dated information and she is a very tough grader.
This Professor is an incredibly tough grader, particularly for a 200 level course. Her feedback is rude and often very unclear. Stay away from this course.
She seems nice but her feedback is very rude and minimal.
Really hard grader and she rude to her students. You would think she would be more understanding given the pandemic
She is a harsh grader. The class was okay I guess. There's a lot of readings. She makes us to do responses, a final exam and a 8 page paper. That's a bit too much.
From my experience, Prof. Weiner was accessible outside of class for any questions and was very accommodating given the circumstances of online learning. There were a fair amount of readings, which is to be expected in any arts course, but they were usually interesting and accessible, used to ground the lectures. Would take a class with her again.
So rude to students!! gives a ton of work during a PANDEMIC and is very strict about deadlines and not understanding at all. I was struggling with really bad anxiety and she just told me to stop stressing and no I could not get an extension. And her exams are super long and detail-orientedd. Would not recommend honestly stay away.
First of all, this class has A LOT of reading, however it's an incredibly interesting one. Prof. Weiner is very engaging and passionate. She answers in-class questions to the best of her ability and explains clearly. The material is very interesting and the grading is fair and distributed over many assignments.
The readings are not too long and mostly very interesting. Technology is not allowed, good notes from lectures are key to doing well. You have to go to all the classes to do well. Grading on the short papers is harsh but the mid-term and final were very fair. Weiner is extremely smart and can be very funny. Highly recommend, great course.
Professor Weiner is very knowledgable about the subject and you can tell she cares, but her delivery of the content in lectures is really poorly organized and dull. I found it very unclear what content was important and what wasn't. Not much feedback on assignments. Overall just disappointing.
I was disappointed by the content that could have been more interesting. The professor I am sure is a nice person and acts as if she cared about your grades but actually asks realky tricky and picky questions. Get prepared to read a loooot (because she will test you on the readings).
While the material was really interesting I found Prof Weiner to be rude and condescending at times. You also have to attend all the lectures if you want to pass and I didn't like that three questions of the final were about specific formulas that she only glazed over during class.
Very passionate about her topic, has interactive and interesting lectures, and encourages discussing and sharing opinions in class. Accessible during office hours, gives good advice about assigments. Very tough grader though, if you're looking for an easy A this is not it
Her lectures were boring and unorganized but clearly interested in what she taught. Feedback was minimal and assessments were reading focused. She came across as rude and condescending the majority of the time, especially when answering questions.
- Prof Weiner is very knowledgeable and accessible outside of class - The course is very reading-heavy, but the readings are very interesting - Lectures can feel disorganized, difficult to pinpoint what information is important - Lectures are not recorded, and slides that are posted lack a lot of the details talked about during class
The pace of lectures is a bit slow. I found Prof Weiner entertaining, but I think the syllabus could be much more engaging and progressive than it is. Attendance is not mandatory but very helpful when translating content to papers. Prof Weiner is blunt but reasonable, grading can be unclear.
Although very knowledgeable during her lectures the way the course was set up was personally not for me. No technology allowed when taking notes in the class, no lectures are recorded and gives only bullet points on her slides, there are lots of readings to do and specific details that will be tested on. I saw these as barriers to my performance.
I liked her lectures, I thought they were entertaining and interesting and her lecture style worked for me. The no technology in class is annoying, especially because lectures aren't recorded and her slides are basically just a few bullet points, get ready to write in class. Although I found her grading scheme fair. She comes off tough but isn't.
I genuinely love this professor. They're so good at teaching and so knowledgeable. Very accessible for office hours. I think I learned more from this course in 1 semester than my entire time at McGill.
This class is really eye-opening and I loved the teaching style of the prof. Readings are very important. It was one of the best classes I've taken at McGill.
SOCI247 was my fav lecture this semester. There was a lot of reading but most were very interesting. highly recommend this class for anyone interested in the social sciences, and especially for soci students. Note - no lecture recordings and handwritten notes only so attendance is mandatory to do well and be up to date on testable material
Amazing professor, wants to see her students do well, very accessible outside of class
