She's an allright prof, but her foreign accent is so hardcore that I had no clue what she was saying most of the time.
The tests and quizes were fairly easy if you did the handouts.
She is the worst professor i have ever had. Her tests are hardcore especially the friggin multiple choice questions! My advice never take her course, pick nicholaev instead!
very good if you did the worksheets. she changed the letter grade scaling, last second. pissed a lot of people off. not compassionate. was VERY hard to understand. had a cute fashion sense for an older woman.
My advice is to sit up close so you can hear her. She's really a good proff and her exams follow her worksheets pretty closely.
she is really good at making working sheets, easy exam, but i learn nothing from her. poor teaching ability.
I really tried, but the language barier was too much for me. The work sheets and practice exams that she posts are pretty good. Could use some better examples, maybe from the worksheet? I thought it might be good with the accent because I would listen harder, but just 2 hard for me to understand.
Her accent wasn't THAT difficult to understand. Her tests and quizzes follow the examples closely and if you listen she'll tell you what's on the quizzes. Fair in her marking - didn't take marks off for stuff that wasn't really important (eg coefficients), only the stuff that was really fundamental.
Was definately difficult to get used to the accent. Worksheets were good. Tough multiple choice questions on her tests.
Good prof. Very nice. Notes were clear. Handouts helped alot with the material. Book was horrendous. She also had a funny sense of style.
Terrible
Doesnt explain examples...at all. Her accent made me laugh.
She should really take an english class or two and learn how to speak properly. Given the number of examples she did was high, they are useless if you don't explain them and you skip steps. Quizzes and tests were very closely related to class material.
very well organized and her notes are impeccable.I found that when i ask questions in class she didn't always know how to respond..not because she didn't know the answer, but because she didn't understand the question. So ask her after class one on one and she will take the time to undertsand what you are asking and help you out.a great teacher.
I don't know about AMAT 307 but she is damn good for this class. Study her previous quizes midterms and you will score at least 85%. If not, you have poor study habits.
My advice is to buy a Ti-89 graphing calculator, do her worksheets, and her practice exams. There's no need to buy the textbook or do any text book questions.
She is the nicest most kind lady i think ive ever met. She just smiles at the entire class and makes you laugh just cause shes so happy. She has terrible jokes and a cool accent, and I really liked her. She has very goode notes and VERY GOOD study material, you honestly do not even need a text book. Shes great.
The cutest little teacher ever! Her accent (Russian) is very very thick and she has a high pitched squeaky voice, but her notes, cheat sheets, assignments, practice exams are invaluable. She gives you practice tests that are EXACTLY the same as the real test with different numbers! Wonderful teacher! Take her!
No surprises, very approachable, and a fast marker.
I thought her exams were okay (well midterm and quiz anyway). Final was a bit harder, but as long as you study you should do fine. Her notes are really perfect and if you like neatness, take her class.
I had her for Math 253 and Math 349. I switched to her class for Math 349 because of Dr. Bates. Man, she saved my ass totally. I learned alot from her. I could always understand her, and her notes were so helpful that it made studying a breeze. Take classes by her you wont regret it
I think she is an excellent teacher. Her examples in class, her quizzes, and the extra work she posts on her website are exactly like the exams she gives. It almost felt like cheating. Not the most exciting lectures but hey it's math.
Good teacher. Don't need to buy a textbook. Her class notes and webwork are sufficient to get an A
Organized, smiley, and professional. I was advised to take calc 2 with another prof, but I have no regrets after taking the course with Dr. Braverman. One of the best U of C has to offer in math/sciences! :)
Easiest Math Class I have ever taken. I went to class a total of 3 times (including the midterm). All you need to do is the assignments, as questions on quizzes, the midterm and the final will be exactly the same. You'd have to work at being bad in order to do poorly in this course.
No need to buy text book at all. Good prof, very through examples. However, sometimes starts off with examples that are far too difficult, so its very difficult to grasp concepts at first.
She's an OK prof, but her teaching method leaves something to be desired - heavy on examples, light on explanations. Examples are great... AFTER you've been told what you're looking at! Do the practice exams!
Best bet is to attend continuos tutorials. If you go to her office hours she is very condescending. Try and avoid her class.
A nice person. I have nothing against her bsides the fact that her final was ridiulously hard and she didn't prepare us properly for it. Midterm was much easier.
Braverman is the worst prof that I have ever had. Be prepared to teach yourself the material. You can get past her accent, but you cannot get past the fact that she is a terrible teacher. In high school, I had a 90 in calculus, now I am at a 78. ALSO THE FINAL IS VERY HARD AND YOU WILL NOT BE PREPARED FOR IT.
Worst prof ever. Her final was unbelievable hard. I finished calcu in high school with a 95%. I'll be lucky if I finish her course with a C-. She doesn?t explain her examples and finding her during her office hours won't help either. She just can't seem to explain anything.
She's a very nice lady but is a bit difficult to understand due to her heavy accent and her notes are confusing. Midterm was alright but her final was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, she did not prepare us properly for it at all.
The other people saying that her tests are easy are WRONG. Oh my god, that final was BRUTAL. Her sample final definitely was not similar to this one. If you still remember your class material from high school, this class should be a breeze. Her accent is heavy and her notes/definitions are complicated. Avoid if possible!
Braverman is a good teacher. Her quizes are almost exactly the same as webwork or examples that she does in class. Her midterm was short and not too hard. Her notes are all you'll need, I never cracked my textbook open once throughout the course.
Braverman does not use the textbook so do not go buy one. She has a heavy accent and is very difficult to understand. Her quizzes are easy and are exactly like her assignments and exercises on webwork. However, her midterms/finals are more challenging. She is always availible to help since she sets up very flexible office hours.
Don't bother buying the textbook unless you want it for extra help. I found her hard to understand, and she was not very clear when I asked her for help in my labs. Never went to her office to ask for help but my friend did and she did not treat her nicely at all. Final was HARD, she didn't prepare us for it at all. Avoid her if at all possible.
AWFUL PROFESSOR. Don't bother going to her office hours she is very rude and is of little help. Webwork quizzes/assignments are easy, but all the Calculus classes have the same webwork, so it has nothing to do with her. Final exam was impossible and midterm was difficult.
Hard to read what she writes on the board (it gives me a headache every day and I sit at the front of the class); she uses light blue chalk on a blackboard, isn't very helpful, doesn't understand the students' questions, doesn't explain well, and she always stands in front of what she just wrote while you're trying to write it down! AVOID HER!!!
Apparently the best of the worse profs for calculus. I used my high school notes for the final, did better on it than the midterm.
If I hadn't taken high school calculus I am pretty sure I would have failed this class. I couldn't understand Elena or her notes and I ended up going to about 1/4 of the classes. Quizzes and midterm were fair but the final was randomly really hard.
Tips for Braverman's Class. 1, Pick a buddy or group to work on webwork. 2, Don't buy textbook. 3, Quiz is webwork, so only look at webwork questions. 4, Final/Midterm is not Webwork so study your notes. 5, Practice your derivatives! 6, Heavy accent so avoid if u r a learner by ear. 7, Rude during office hrs so dont cry if she hurts ur feelings
The midterm wasn't so bad, and her assignments and quizzes were pretty easy. Lectures are all examples. I just wrote my final today and all I have to say is that SHE DOES NOT PREPARE YOU FOR ANYTHING. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE.
okay, simply said, I got a 95% in highschool and ended up with a 72%. GET OUT IF YOU CAN! But i had to choose between Larry Bates.. I think I would have seriously failed, his rating is even worse. Uhm my advice, Do alllll practice final exams and midterms. AND professors Ling's practice final exams, as many as you can. its on his website. GoodLUCK!
Took calculus in high school and got a 91 and I got a 56 on the final. My advice is do her practice tests and if you can get practice questions from friends with other profs as well.
Her midterm was decent but the final was brutally hard and unfair. There were only 25 very hard multiple choice questions She has a thick accent but you will get used to it. In her office hours she treats you like an idiot even if you've gotten 100% in the midterm like I had! Overall pick her for math 251 because other profs are even worse!
Awful teacher. You can tell she tries hard and she really knows her stuff but she is incapable of communicating her knowledge to students. Quizzes and assignments are easy because they are on Webwork. Midterm was also fairly easy. Final, however, was BRUTAL! Honestly, she's the best of the worst.
She knows her stuff but can not communicate it effectively. Tests are hard but quizzes are fair. I wouldn't reccommend her to anyone
In my experience the assignments, quizzes, and midterm were good. The final however was horrible. She just threw the nastiest equations at us. She can be a bit quiet and impatient but she is smart.
Braverman has good intentions of teaching the class but I she is too smart for a first year math course. She justs talks to the board as she writes out equations and when people ask questions, she gives them the "you really don't know?!!" look and then gives a complicated high level answer that no one understands.
She is extremly helpful. She replies to emails in less then an hour. If you go into her class with a positive attitude u will easily walk out with at least a B.
Poor teacher. Doesn't communicate the topic well at all and so you are left to learn the concepts on your own. When you ask for help, her explanations are almost useless.
She's super quirky and her writing is really pretty. Would recommend!
She has extremely nice writing. If you are good at math, you will be able toe follow what she is writing on the board. If you are not naturally good at math, DO NOT take a class with her. She explains, absolutely nothing, and when you ask a question she does not even answer it. Her midterms were insulting simple, and the final was fine. An easy A.
She doesnt know how to teach, very, very confusing!
Absolutely impossible to understand. Notes are unclear and she does not answer student questions at all. Avoid at all costs ! I learn absolutely nothing from her and all my studying comes from either the textbook or webassign
extremely extremely poor teacher. seems like a very nice lady but the only reason i passed this class was because i had taken calc in high school. would not recommend!
Cannot understand what she is saying sometimes. Easy homework and fairly easy exams, which do not require a large amount of studying.
You will have difficulty understanding what Braverman says. Lectures are generally pointless. You must learn the course by yourself otherwise you will not pass. Easy homework, easy exams. Overall nice lady, just not very good at teaching.
Really nice lady and can answer questions but her teaching style is horrible and she doesn't know how to provide adequate examples that are understandable for the average person. Accent was not a problem. Only reason why I passed the course was because I had taken high school calculus. Would NOT recommend!
not helpful at all ,I learn everything myself
Braverman is a god among mortals. She marked all exams within a 3 day (max) period. Final was marked the night of. Her work sheets were amazing and included solutions. I didn't crack a textbook at all. She does not post her notes online, so show up, or make a friend who can cover for you. Her writing is an art form in itself.
I don't see why she has such bad reviews on here.. Yes she has an accent but it's not that hard to understand her. Her examples are amazing and she posts follow up notes every week on what we should review. She's very approachable and always willing to help. Best part of taking math with her is the pretty writing!
She does everything expected of a professor. Has great notes, goes slowly, chose an excellent online assignment system that helps rather than tests.
I thought she was great, examples in class were awesome and the webwork assignments that she set up were extremely helpful. She was always very approachable and willing to help students. She has thick accent but you get used to it, overall I would recommend!
She was really good, her lectures were excellent and she did lots of review at the end of the course. She was clear and concise, with lots of examples. I would recommend taking a class with her. As long as you go to lecture and take notes you should be fine!
Seems like a caring prof. However she cannot effectively communicate what she is trying to teach. Class consists of hastily writing notes and a chorus of exasperated sighs. She does provide plenty of resources.
She is a very intelligent prof. However her teaching style can be difficult to overcome. Furthermore, her writing is too soft and difficult to see. She goes too fast as well. She provides lots of resources and has marks up in less than 2 days. She is quite confrontational and rude if you speak to her in person. Dont *avoid* but expect to work hard
As a marginal student in the course, I've really changed my mind about this prof over the sem. Regardless of what I get in the course, it is just deserved. She provides many resources for you to do well. Marks are up shockingly fast, and reflects the amount of work you put in. This course is just very difficult, so keep up with the studying.
She a friendly lady who is full of passion to help students. I have taken 2 courses with her. She is extremely intelligent and well prepared. Would highly recommend taking any course with her as long as you keep step with her and do not skip any class. The exams are related to what she teaches in class and the assignments.
Seems to lack any interpersonal skills. Whenever I went to her for any help she was very rude to me, as if she didn't see how it was impossible for anybody to struggle with the material in this course. Notes/solutions aren't very helpful, as she skips from one result to the other without any explanation of the math involved or theory applied.
I really have no idea what is she talking about during a class, she is just reading out what she is writing out on the board. Her writing is too light that it is hard to see if you are sitting in the third or fourth row in the classroom. NEVER TAKE HER AGAIN EVER
Jesus christ what a terrible professor. Get ready to teach yourself the whole course. She is basically useless and of no help. All she does is copies her notes on the blackboard and doesn't bother explaining the concepts. You'll leave class understanding basically nothing. Exams deduct 6% for one MCQ mistake. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS.
She would repeatedly tell us to come into her office for help, but when you asked she would tell me we went over that in class(duh). Which a quarter of the class she specifically calls out "the smart ones" and goes over and above for the couple that understand what's going on, leaving the majority puzzled on the basics. Passed only because of TA.
Lectures are pretty straightforward. Her accent can cause you to miss a word she says from time-to-time but notes are clearly written on the board and are left up for more than enough time to write down. Very clear prep materials are given before the quiz and marks are up shockingly fast.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not explain what she is doing, and just reads off what she is writing without further discussion. She teaches topics after she has already tested you on them, both with assignments and quizzes. In the future I will drop every course I have in which she is the professor.
I dont understand why so many students rate Dr. Braverman poorly because she is one of my top 5 favourite professors. Her notes are very concise providing the most amount of information with a minimal number of words. This takes rare genius. Moreover, the way she explained topics leaves no room for questioning; I always understood what I needed.
Avoid this professor at all costs. She barely explains anything during lectures so you will always have to go back to your notes and re-teach yourself. Not to mention, her lectures are extremely boring and slow. You go through 1-2 examples in the entire 50-minute lecture and that's if you're lucky.
Quizzes were short, so each question you got wrong was a significant chunk of your grade. Her notes and lectures are confusing at times. Some of the jumps she makes from one step to the next don't have any context or make any sense. There are some examples where only half of the question is solved.
I can tell how Braverman's class would be way better in person. Her teaching style transfers poorly online which made the class more difficult than anticipated. However I can see how excellent this class would be in person, just frustrating in her lack of unwillingness to change teaching style.
100% of the course is marked through WebWork. Made a typo? Thats 17% of your grade gone. Has zero concern for giving students a reasonable chance to succeed and get the marks they deserve. One of the most unsympathetic people I have ever met.
Get ready to teach yourself the entire course. She is not very considerate of the students and has a poor teaching method. Quizzes are heavily weighted and the assignments are extremely long. Once you've taught yourself everything, the actual content is not difficult but the way that she teaches/tests makes it near impossible to understand.
Doesn't seem to understand why online schooling is difficult. Heavily weighted quizzes and final all on WEBwork, so no partial marks for work. When I asked her if that could change she responded "no environment can be less stressful" than online tests. Speaks very slowly and doesn't use examples often, and never explains how to apply theories.
RUN!! MATH376 is NOT a hard course. The material with a bit of work is doable but she is NOT. All marks came from Webwork(assignments, quizzes and final exam). the quizzes were okay as well as the assignment. The final however will be NOTHING like it. Complete curveball to bring students GPA down. BEWARE OF THE FINAL
Dr. Braverman was upset through the semester that the class average of 70% was "too high", to fix this she created a final exam that was impossible to be fully prepared for. It was unlike anything in the entire course. She managed to tank everyone's grades very well. Went from a 90 to a B+. Avoid if you can!!!
Worst Maths prof Ive had in my 3 years of undergrad. Does the bare minimum and expects her students to have an easy understanding of everything. MATH376 is NOT a hard course but the way quizzes and assignments are weighted, it will be very difficult to get anything higher than B+ in this. She is terrible at explaining and teaching in general.
I had the displeasure of having her during Fall 2020 (COVID). She made 100% of our mark be determined from Webwork. This included assignments, quizzes and a final. The quizzes and final was made without consideration to time. She gave us calculation heavy questions which required a lot more time to work out than we were given. She was unreasonable.
Truly impossible to succeed without cheating. On the first day of class, I was convinced I had missed a week because she immediately dove into topics without explaining what she was doing or why. Without defining a differential equation, she began solving them immediately. It went downhill from there. Chegg or self-teaching is the only answer.
AVOID Literal GPA killer. Does not explain material in simple terms, lacks concrete instantiation of the theory she gives, posts unclear solutions to her handouts which assume you know more than you do, gives a final exam worth 50%. The only thing that has saved the class average is the TA. You're better off in a 300 person lecture.
During her lectures she almost always makes no sense, her notes are all over the place, and she skips a lot of important information. I had to look at other profs notes to understand the course better.
If you have Dr. Braverman as your professor, you are better off reading notes from other professors assuming you have access to them. If you still want to go to her lectures, you should still read course notes before attending the lectures. Dr. Braverman can benefit from including more detail in her procedure when doing examples in class.
Yeah, attend someone else's class. Messes up basic algebra / calculus, classes make no sense, and you also can't understand her half the time.
It hard to follow her explanations and you get lost easily.
Not great
I found her notes to be incredibly information dense which became confusing at times as there were areas which I felt lacked structure or became overcrowded. She was very kind and helpful when you had questions like when you went to your grandma to ask a question...only this grandma has a PhD in differential equations and has her own Wikipedia page
I would think she is a ok professor if I didn't attend her lecture. It feels like she's just reading and copying someone else's notes. Read her notes to see which topics are covered and self taught yourself is the best choice because if you attend you will end up learning that again on your own anyway.
This professor should be avoided. Could clearly tell she was annoyed with the class, as the numbers dwindled from full to less than 20 on average, any question asked would get a snarky remark or no answer/reply at all! This worked out though, as towards the end of the quizzes she gave questions directly off the handouts and practice quizzes.
Do not take this professor unless you really have to. If you really have to, start watching online videos on topics to understand the materials from the very beginning. Webworks are much more complicated than the tests. For the test, the handouts and are very good for preparation and theories from the lecture notes are important as well.
Mm yes never has math been so hard and confusing for me.
Braverman is not a good lecturer, but she is a lecturer that had class at a time other than 8am, so it was an okay decision for me. She's not that bad, she's just not really good.
She's a bad lecturer, but the alternative is an 8am for us. Switch if you can, but completely tolerable
Honestly no real reason to go to the lectures. Not bad but definitely not good either. I would just stick to the weekly notes as they are actually pretty solid. Definitely better than going to an 8am lecture though.
Boring lectures
Not a very good lecturer. She goes quite fast and her accent makes it a little hard to understand her. She's a really sweet lady but I don't think she's meant to be teaching. The content and exams were quite difficult but if you do the practice material, you should do just fine.
Lectures can be a bit of a struggle, but the course material is manageable if you put in the work. unstuck study helped me stay on track with practice problems and review. Overall, a decent class if you're willing to put in the effort.
$4700 a semester to be forced to teach yourself. What a great scam the University of Calgary is running. Horrible "instructor". Just goes up and draws numbers and rambles for an hour a week. Who hires these people?
