homework is not graded. quizzes every discussion
really mediocre lectures, never seems particularly sure of herself. The quizzes aren't hard, but the midterm was pretty hard. If you do the homework you'll be fine, but her lectures aren't helpful.
She is pretty good. Some of her lectures aren't very clear, but for the most part she is a good professor. Her quizzes are easy, but they do not count for much. Her midterm was slightly difficult but definitely do-able if you study. Your grade is based off quizzes, two midterms, and a final. SHE CURVES:)
Limits, Derivatives, and Apps of Derivatives is all that is covered in 21a. Lectures are little to no help for tests and quizzes. I made the grave mistake of not doing the ungraded homework and I am facing the consequences. Go to tutoring in the residence halls, not the Calc room, where the TAs overcomplicate everything.
She was not very articulate in her lectures and to be honest it was mostly review from high school calculus so it was not necessary to always go to class. I did horrendous on the first midterm but I picked it up for the second one and now I'm fine in the class. So she is not that bad.
She's a good professor. Lectures are good but if you don't attend them you won't miss much. Daily quizzes in lectures but aren't worth all that much. Midterms were pretty hard but her office hours and review sessions are a great help, she'll cover and will go over a lot of things. Would definitely take her class again.
She's really nice and she cares about her students but her lectures are useless. the class is basically weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final and if u do the ungraded homework you'll do well
great professor. easy class if you do the practice problems
No homework, but quizzes in discussion. She might drop a midterm if you show improvement. Her lecture style is very clear, but if you want to get a good grade on the midterms or the final you have to go to the review sessions. Midterms are almost exactly the same as the practice tests she posts. Final was much easier than she could have made it.
Fuchs is an ok teacher. Not the worst, but not the best. Definitely be prepared to study. The second midterm was exactly like the practice exam, but the first midterm and final were completely different. Also, you have weekly quizzes in discussion, which are 10% of your grade. Would not take again .
If you do the homework and understand the basics of what she's talking about, the weekly quizzes are easy. As far as the midterms and finals go, if you do the review she provides and understand why the answers are the way they are, the final will be easy. Her notes are organized and concise so make sure to pay attention if you need clarification.
She is very nice and knew this topic well. Class was pretty standard. Hw each week, a midterm, and a final. I think everyone pretty much did well. No grievances...
Professor Fuchs is young, and it shows--in a good way. She is friendly, approachable and easy to talk to, and about as far from intimidating--while still being a solid teacher--as Calculus professors come. Her inexperience as a new professor by no means gets in the way of her giving good explanations. She obviously cares about her students.
I got her towards the latter half of the course because the teacher prior to her no longer taught the class. She was really understanding, the way in which she teaches is clear, however, some material may be confusing especially in the ways that she explains. I went to office hours, is super helpful there, gives everyone a chance to ask questions.
She is a very down-to-earth professor. In lecture, she explains with a lot of examples and teaches clearly. She is very approachable, explains really well, and tries her best to make sure you understand the content.
Professor Fuchs is a good teacher. She explains concepts thoroughly and answers questions effectively. However, her pace is a little slow which makes it easy for you to get distracted.
She explains everything and every step of the problem. Her office hours were super helpful. She makes sure people understand the material. Also, she gives the formula sheet during the exam.
Professor Fuchs is someone who truely cares about her students. She is super fast when responding to emails, very friendly when asked questions, and is very good at explaining the material. Midterm was fair. Not too hard, yet not an easy A. The final was similar, slightly harder. I reccomend showing up to each class, it is very beneficial.
Professor Fuchs took over midway through the quarter from professor Zhang, and I instantly felt more confident about math. She takes time in the lectures to answer questions and allows students to completely understand the material before moving on.
Professor Fuchs was easily accessible outside of class and responds to emails quickly. She will go out of her way to help you, all you have to do is ask! Grading and exams were fair, but not easy. She often offered extra office hours and even did a review session before the final which was outside of class. I would definitely take her again!
One of the best math professors I've had. Explains concepts super clearly and will take the time to re-explain them if you ask (both in lecture and outside of class). Homework was challenging but she was always happy to help. I'd highly recommend her for any math class.
Fuchs took over for my original professor and boy was it fantastic. She had no choice but to adopt my previous instructor's grading scale (40% HW!) and was a significantly better professor. Her use of the overhead projector was easy to follow during lecture and she was very helpful outside of class. Made test reviews for us, too. Great instructor.
Professor Fuchs was amazing! She explained the concepts super clearly and the tests were pretty much like the examples she went over in class.
HAVE TAKEN HER MAT 115A&B, DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST PROF AT MATH DEPARTMENT. LECTURES ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND HW CAN GIVE YOU A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPIC.
Her office hours were really helpful. She makes her homework harder but doesn't give any busy work problems and the problems follows her notes quite accurately. Even with rona, she had lots of online office hours and kept us updated (like very very updated). Her tests are very similar to her practice tests, but the true/false questions were tough.
Fuchs is a good math professors. Her lectures are clear and concise. She make sure that the students understand the material. She even had online office hours the night before the midterm. Her midterms were challenging but fair and an accurate representation of the practice final. Best math prof at UCD!!!
You're better off following her lecture notes than the book. Homework was challenging at times but not impossible with the help of her notes. Midterms and final were similar to the practice tests. You still need to really understand the material though because the true or false questions on the tests were tough.
Something I really liked about her was that she often stopped and took the time to remind us what different terms or methods were, even if they're very elementary (for example if she were teaching division by hand, she would remind us how to subtract), which I found super helpful.
Her homework can be tough but she works through the problems in Office Hours. The class wasn't curved so you need to do well on very exam to get an A. True and False conceptual questions could be tricky.
I had Fuchs during winter and her last minute transition to online was very doable. Rather than cancelling the final as a whole, she made it online. As for the rest of the course pre-COVID, Elena is a great professor who uses paper and a projector that records lecture to instruct. This is very helpful if you miss class or need to reference back.
Take Prof. Fuchs if you have the chance! She is very clear of her expectations, and tests are similar to the (multiple) practice exams that she provides. She was very accommodating during the COVID-19 pandemic and always made sure that our mental health was a top priority. She is accessible outside of class and very knowledgeable!
A solid teacher. Gives good, clear lectures and really helpful practice tests. If you struggle with proofs, this is a bit of a difficult class, but if you feel solid about number theory it's not bad. A pretty interesting class and a good teacher.
All of the lectures are prerecorded. Only weekly quizzes, weekly homework, and one final! You need to do all the homework to get good grades. :(
get me out. Terrible class. We haven't covered eigen values, determinants and a bunch of other bs because we were learning column spaces for like 2 months.
It's a difficult class, but her lectures are extremely good. She explains the topics well, she listens to feedback, and her tests are fair. The midterm is 35% and the final is 50%, but a cheat sheet is allowed and she gives practice exams that are representative. At first the HW was ludicrously difficult, but she quickly made them fair. Great prof.
good prof, bad TA's. if your TA is Victor Py, avoid at all costs, he is unforgiving.
Exams were not curved, however averages were very high (first midterm had avg of 90%). The exams were exactly like the practice exams so if you understood those you could certainly get a good score. She gave out a lot of extra credit which was nice. Her lectures are really slow however and we didn't cover some key topics we needed to in this class.
I felt that lectures were somewhat disorganized and very slow paced. However, tests seemed fair and it was nice to have the option of attending lecture or taking tests either in person or online as well as having extra credit for attending lectures. Other than the lectures, the class was a good experience.
Fuchs was a great teacher but the design of the course was not so nice in terms of the order we learned concepts/the amount of time we spent on some concepts. There was no rubric for homework that was accessible to the students which made it annoying if points were taken off. Midterms and final were very similar to the practice tests she provided.
Prof Fuchs was very accessible outside of class and made sure that we truly understood the material during her office hours. The homework were fairly difficult but if you understand the HW, you'll do good on exams. I recommend doing practice problems similar to the HW problems for extra practice.
Insanely easy class. Professor is very caring and explains concepts very thoroughly. Is very helpful and often re-explains concepts several times, evidently truly wanting her students to understand. Lectures were all on Zoom and extra credit was offered for attending. Tests follow practice tests SUPER closely - study them!!! Take her class!! :D
Doesn't teach good
I thought Fuchs was a great teacher. Her lectures were clear, she provided simple grading rubrics, and offered students the space to provide feedback and ask plenty of questions. Homework was not graded, we had weekly quizzes, and the midterms were fair and manageable. Overall, I enjoyed this class and having her as a teacher.
Professor Fuchs is pretty straightforward with clear lectures. She is willing to answer questions and gives a lot of help if needed. The exams are similar to the study guides. There is a quiz every week based off of the homework which is pretty easy if you study.
Great professor and wonderful human being. Lectures are good and she is super caring to those struggling who reach out for help. Made me love math again, nothing but love for her! :) you will not regret taking her.
Elena is awesome. The major reason for me to give her a high grade is her nicely curve. She knows the class is tough, so she curves a lot. If you take her class, you should not worry about the grading. The 21b grading mainly divides into quizzes and exams. The quizzes are the problems in homework, and the exams have practices. Great class!
As a 21b retaker I absolutely loved professor Fuchs. I went from failing 21b winter quarter to an A spring quarter. The class is based on 2 midterms, the final, and weekly quizes based on homework. The weekly quizzes are only one question off of the homework given a week in advance so it hard not to pass. The final was also curved very generously.
This professor puts a lot of effort into their lectures and makes it clear what they expect you to learn. For example, on days before exams, we had reviews in lecture to help better prepare us for the test. I really enjoyed this course because the professor really seemed like they wanted their students to pass.
Found the class to be rather easy as the tests reflected what was being taught. The final was difficult and really tested on the hardest topics of the course. No graded hw but there was a single question quiz weekly in discussions and the problem came straight out of the hw, no changes at all. Really enjoyed her energy and how she explained things.
Best math professor I've had at Davis. She is very organized and has great lectures. She teaches theorems followed by lots of examples. Answers questions in lecture. Gives lots of practice material for midterms and finals. Also gives an entire formula sheet for tests which is so awesome! Discussion was mandatory as there were weekly quizzes.
Professor Fuchs does a lot of in class examples. If you are not the best at calculus I would really recommend her for many reasons. She is always accessible and really goes out of her way to help her student succeed. Attendance for discussion was mandatory due to weekly quizzes but they do end up helping on exams.
Prof. Fuchs was incredible. Although the class is difficult and you have to actually study to get a good grade, a bad grade can't be blamed on the professor. Her lectures are clear and she does a lot of practice problems. I recommend her to anyone who needs to take 21a.
Please enroll in this course if you need Calc 21a. Super chill lectures, will pause literally as long as it takes to answer all questions. Office hours are super helpful (I regret not going as much as I did), and she's super kind and caring about students. Additionally, if you bomb your first midterm you can have your second one weighed higher.
Professor Fuchs is a kind and very reasonable professor. Her office hours are highly worth it and talking to her 1 on 1 will give you lots of advice about how to approach math if you're struggling. Her pacing in lectures is great and the fact that there's no assigned homework (homework's posted but you never have to turn it in) is great.
She teaches the concepts pretty well and is very accessible outside of class. You can tell that she really cares about her students. Lectures are recorded so attendance is mandatory but discussion is mandatory as there are weekly quizzes. The exams aren't difficult if you put in a moderate amount of effort.
too many mistakes in notes and hw
Professor Fuchs is a good professor and very responsive to questions during lectures. Weekly quizzes are one question and come from the homework so if you understand the homework you can pass the quizzes. You can also drop your two worst ones if you fail or are absent. Exams are reasonable and curved. The practice for exams is helpful for studying.
Her lectures are clear and helpful and her grading is fair. Amazing curve.
Good teacher. Taught the class very well and at a good pace. Just attend lecture and do the homework and you should be fine. She also provides good practice material for midterm/finals
Elena is a really good professor. She explained things well and gave us many opportunities to succeed. The material for this course is really dry and can be difficult (at least for me, and that isn't on her) But attend lecture and do the homework and you'll do great. Final was really difficult, but she curved generously. Midterms were okay though.
Professor Fuchs is a solid professor overall, her lectures can be be a bit boring sometimes, the course is fairly easy, however her curve is absolute dogwater!!!
Despite being a number theorist, Prof Fuchs covered combinatorics well and put a lot of effort into the class. Going to lectures is recommended but I found them slow and 60-80% repeat with discrete math so watched recordings on 2.5x. OH are very helpful. Midterm and final practice problems are great, homework is challenging in a good way.
Professor Fuchs is very willing to answer students' questions, and exam questions are very straightforward. The professor emphasizes conceptual understanding of calculus over algebra like simplification; if you can take a derivative and justify how, then you will get full points on an exam (not a lot of tricky questions). Homework is not collected.
Professor Fuchs clearly cares about all her students and goes in depth with answering all questions. Her lectures are theorem heavy, but the practice tests prepare you well for exams. She is generous with accommodations for students and I love her
Loved the class, lectures are engaging and she's always open to answer any questions. Holds office hours, weekly quizzes and worksheets in discussion, optional homework, 2 midterms. I got a 5 in AP Calc so I did have some background knowledge but I felt the class was well paced and easy to follow.
She's one of the most caring teachers I took,I didn't have any background in calc so the lectures and material were a little challenging but she is very accessible and her office hours are very useful. She has weekly quizzes which are the exact same problem as a question on the homework.2 midterms 1 final.Homework is not mandatory.Lectures recorded
She's very passionate about teaching the class. Lectures recorded, not too much homework, and exams are easy. best professor i met in my first quarter
Dr. Fuchs, is a great lecturer and a fair professor. She is always willing to stop and answer questions, and makes things easy to understand. My only problem with the class is the way the grading is broken down, the final is 40% of the grade so even a slight mess up affects your grade pretty heavily, but she curves the final grade to offset that.
I took Fuchs during Fall Quarter 2023. She is an amazing professor who cares about her students and her explanations are very thorough and complete. The homework is optional but I would do it because it is very helpful for the exams. There is weekly quizzes but it isn't bad at all. Fuchs does a great job answering student questions. Take her!
Wonderful lecturer. I took her last quarter, but if I remember correctly, the weightings were 10% Quizzes, 25% Midterm 1, 25% Midterm 2, and 40% Final. The quizzes happened weekly and she dropped two. The questions were always from the homework, which wasn't graded (but used for quizzes). It was easy to get an A, especially if you already know calc
Very tough yet fair class. She gave opportunities for students who failed the first midterm to pass the class if they improved on their score on the following exam. Homework is very important to complete, although not required.
idk this class was rly hard and i didn't find her lecture style conducive to the way i learn.
She's one of the best profs here, clear lectures and organized. Took her SQ 2023 ( a lot happened ) and she was so supportive during that time. Also held plenty of reviews on zoom to go through example tests. Overall a very sweet prof and solid lecturer.
Don't take this class, extremely difficult exam, and 85% of the grade comes from two midterms and one final. Once you use the wrong method, you get the entire question wrong, not even a point you willreceive. But the lectures are good, though.
Lowket not that good at teaching.
Fuchs is the best math professor I have ever had. The material is very difficult but thats just the 21 series. She is incredibly caring and accessible out of class and I can tell she actually wants her students to succeed. Her lectures are very helpful and my TA happened to also be really great. HIGHLY recommend Fuchs she made me love math again!
this was one of the easiest STEM classes i've ever taken. fuchs is such a good lecturer and if you do a bunch of practice problems you will get an A in the class. the exams are extremely fair and the practice exam is a good reflection of the exam itself. one of the best teachers at davis.
Idk i'm not too good at math but I spent a lot of time studying and I found this class way too hard and lectures weren't very beneficial
Exams reflect what is taught in class, so don't miss class but the lectures are recorded. Many students failed the second midterm but she did a great job helping them improve by recording crash course videos and providing time slots to meet with her individually to discuss scores. I really enjoyed this class
I may have a biased opinion about MAT21B since I took calculus in high school, but I thought Dr. Fuchs was a great professor. Exams were fair, and she even gave people who failed the 2nd midterm a chance to redeem their grade with their final. She hand writes the notes during lecture, so going to class is recommended.
Fuchs cares a lot about students. Very generous with partial credit. Our section ended up bombing Midterm 2 and Fuchs made sure to set up extra OH, crash course videos, and even meetings with students to help improve both class average and individual students who needed it. Weekly quizzes. Utilize extra practice and tutoring when needed. Curved.
fuchs was a good professor! taught concepts well which was supported by TA discussions! dissussion quizzes came directly from the homework each week. gave lots of partial credit on exams. hand writes notes during class so it was easy to follow along and keep up!
I went from a C- in 21A thinking I wouldn't survive Calc to getting a B in 21B. Professors absolutely make or break a class. Fuchs is amazing at explaining concepts well. Quizzes are straight from the HW so not too much stress on those. The midterms incredibly fair. Was so thoughtful and helpful for students struggling as shown by other reviews.
Elena was the best professor I have had at Davis so far! She cares a lot about her students and she really wants you to pass the class. Partial credit in this class was very generous, and I advise going to her office hours she will go through a lot of examples of your choice and answer any questions.
Best lecturer I've ever had. I took MAT 21B before and dropped it because nothing made sense. With Fuchs, I understood everything easy. She cares about her students. FAILED midterm 2 (my fault), but she worked with me. 15% of grade was weekly quizzes (one of the homework questions) and the rest is exams that are easier than practice exams.
I love prof Fuchs! She's very engaging during lecture. About 6-10 hw problems a week plus a 2-5 pg summary of a math article for final project. Material was easy but exams were a bit challenging, especially the midterm. Lecture is recorded, but not publicly posted; you have to request it if you're sick. I recommend always going to lecture though.
As good as a professor she was, I found her guidance outside of class very unhelpful. She doesn't seem to understand or sympathize with students, we all have a different grasp on calc but she will assume you have a good handle on everything. Her lectures were good and homework is helpful, quizzes were ok, it's the midterms u need to look out for
Elena Fuchs is the best math professor that I have had so far. She puts in a lot of extra time for her students. This includes extra office hours, review sessions held even over weekends, and even trying to meet with some of her students individually to figure out how she can help us succeed.
She is such an amazing professor, she really cares about her students. I literally love her, my favorite professor in Davis so far. Midterms and finals difficulty wise were pretty similar and were fairly easy. if you understand the basics and the process then its really not that challenging. The homework were usually harder then the Midterms.
Unless, you have taken Calculus 2 before as Ap or have a really good understanding of the content, do not take her. On her 2nd midterm, 1/3 of the entire class got below 15/40 and even people who I knew were really good at Math barely passed Her response was to blame the students for lacking fundamentals. I'd like to say more but character limit...
I retook 21B with Fuchs and had such as amazing experience. GO to her office hours, I found her to be more helpful during those times. She provides super useful formula sheets on exams and is very accommodating for SDC students. Exams were fair as long as you practice, practice and practice I promise this is the key to succeeding in the class)
Please take her! The exam is very similar to the homeworks/worksheets given in discussion, so as long as you understand those, you will do fairly well! She is very accommodating and sincerely wants her students to succeed.
Really accessible and caring professor!!! After 106 people got < 15/40 on her second midterm (the students' fault in my opinion), she held 1-on-1 meetings with everyone who did poorly. She had a generous curve at the end of the class that allowed anyone who put in effort to pass the course. If you understand the homework problems, you'll do well.
She's the GOAT
She is very kind and understanding. The first midterm was super easy, but the second one is way harder(avg. 50%). If you did better on the final she would change your midterm 2 grade based on how much better you did based on the final average.
Tbh she's chill as a professor but sometimes her grading criteria was harsh as I recieved a pretty low score on an exam and when I asked for a grade request she said that she won't regrade it just because "the rubric wasn't generous enough." Kinda disappointed as many people recommended her and I did not even pass as the curve was nonexistent..
she is one of the better math professors at davis if you havent took calc before. the first midterm was easy, second midterm was more difficult, and the final was challenging but passable. there are quizzes almost every week at the end of discussion. she gets the quiz questions directly from posted homework, so do homework to get a grade boost.
Would take her for every math class if I could. The lectures, homework, practice, and exams all go well together.
Please take this class if you can, Fuchs is excellent. The class itself is a big jump; be prepared to put in work. She was accommodating to students with office hours and discussion time. It was 15% Lec. attendance, 25% Midterm, 35% Final, 20% PSETs, 5% MC webwork. Grade-scope comments/criteria for missed points. Became a much better proof writer.
Fuchs' lectures are really clear and concise. She has weekly quizzes that are based on her homework, with 2 drops. The quizzes and tests are pretty much reflective of her practice material and homework. So as long as you stay on top of the lecture material, you'll be fine.
Such an amazing lecturer! She is very good at making lectures engaging and approachable, and is overall a very nice person. There are 4-7 hw problems per week (15%), 2 midterms (25% each), and a final (35%). Cheat sheets are allowed for exams, but they can be HARD, so make sure you know how to use the material for various proofs.
