Kicks students out of her class if they're late, not willing to help outside of class. Clear and sometimes funny, but wastes time talking about random things. Attendance absolutely mandatory, or else she docks marks. Doesn't seem to have time for students.
ENG 1112 - SIMPLY A USELESS PROF. Kicks people out for being slightly late and sometimes hears "noises" and kicks people out who are near the noises. She's also insulting
While she may kick you out for being late, or isolate you from your friends if you talk during her lectures. There is no getting away from the fact that she is VERY helpful. She will literally take you by the hand to get an A, and she really does care about her students...as long as you don't talk during her class!
Very strict, and unclear from what she wants. She cares about her students, and her TAs are really nice and caring. But she treated students like they were in highschool, and some marks are based on behavior in the class room which is not right. Easy course though
She is strict in class however she gives a lot of small assignments that can boost your mark intime for the final. She expects everyone to be on time and participating. Can be intimidating but overall a decent english professor
Still one of my favourite Russian profs I've had. Her classes are structured, organised, and very informative. Her class was often entertaining and funny; I looked forward to going! She seemed to care a lot about our learning, and would even provide individualized feedback on assignments. Take a class with her!
Completely up front with what she expects from students. Does not dance around useless points, but gets straight to the point. Our class didnt give her enough credit as it was mostly full of mouthy first years who were still in highschool mode. If one simply follows all of her instructions you WILL do very well.
SHe is so nice and funny. To be honest, the content is so boring but it is not necessary to go to her class cause she posts her slides (i never went to her classes) BUT the DGDS are MANDATORY. The TAs are angels specially Carmela LOVE HER TO DEATH. if you hand in all your work and follow instructions you should be all good :D
I absolutely loved this prof and her TAs! This class taught me so much and it was so easy to do well in. If you do exactly what the textbook does and be creative with the assignments, you'll do great. Focus a lot on grammar as well as the assignments are basic grade boosters. She allowed us to do tests in partners and the exam was easy!
She started kicking students out of class in our first workshop. After our first diagnostic test, she disrespectfully told ppl to drop this class as they were going to fail n to inroll in ESL... She ran off to Russia a couple days after the exam so you couldnt approach her. Made the easiest class a pain. Miss 3 workshops and you fail! #1stYrProbs!!
Amazing professor. Serious about teaching. Explains very well. Teaches new necessary skills easily. She's hilarious at times what with her self deprecating humour. The only class I look forward to every week. :P
One of the worst teachers ever. If you can take anyone else just do it.
She is a good teacher. She wants you to do well. The class is an easy course. She really good at making appointments and discussing things 1-to-1 with students. However she does have contradicting class notes and assignment examples that do not cross reference well. Just outright ask her what she wants if it is not clear.
If you can take a different prof. DO IT.
horrible teacher and she is very rude during office hours. Her voice is annoying and nasal and she is very picky with what she wants in her reports. If you don't have to take her class, don't do it!! You will regret it!!
Avoid at all costs. Horrible teacher on a power trip. Really boring lecture, all of which are uselessly mandatory
shes okay
Tough grader. Boring class.
Horrible. Lecture are boring and unnecessary. The samples that she provides are not helpful. Followed the samples and she docks my papers to a B because of a few grammar mistakes. Says that I don't have citations even though they're clearly in the paper. Wants assignments to follow a format and then docks marks for following them. Avoid at all cost
When I read the negative comments about her, I was terrified to be in this class. Let me just say, this turned out to be one of my favourite classes! She's quite friendly if you treat her with respect (as you should for any professor) and she wants her students to do well. Loved the Discussion Groups and the T.A was super nice! Would take again.
Get into a DGD that she doesn't teach if you can. Look at the examples posted online and follow their structure for assignments. Don't bother attending lectures until the last couple weeks when the Final Report is being discussed. Skip the Beer textbook. The Diana Hacker textbook is helpful for in class quizzes and APA citation.
Elena Ilina was not the greatest prof ever. She has the pleasure of teaching one of the dullest classes that one can take. Also, her slides can contradict what is labeled as "correct" in the text book. This gave a great feeling of confusion when working on assignments. DGD's were good and it was an easy class. I'm glad that this class is done!
This is by far the most boring class I've taken so far. Honestly, don't bother going to class because it's not worth it; however, make sure to go to every DGD and hand assignments in or you won't pass. Follow the samples online, don't bother buying the textbooks and act like you're paying attention in the DGD and you'll get a good grade.
Elena is a great professor! She is very clear in her grading criteria and makes herself available outside of class to look over assignments and give you feedback. You don't need to go to lectures because she puts everything on Blackboard; however, attendance to DGDs are mandatory. The final exam is take-home!
She makes a very boring class less boring.
She has very strict rules (ex. cannot be late for workshops) and is very old-school in that matter. However, she provides all the help you need to get an A in the course. Follow the instructions and go see her during her office hours. She basically guides you to what she wants, so how can you go wrong?
Elena is an "old school" professor who rightly doesn't tolerate disrespect. Many complain about the mandatory workshops but honestly, if you just read the chapter before, you'll do well. Participation is very important and even if you answer incorrectly, she'll point you in the right direction and push you until you get it right.
Overall a good class. Prof Ilina explained necessary concepts well, but still found there were some tough markers.
The worst prof I've ever seen. She is really rude to her student. Try to avoid her.
Terrible teacher, can't explain anything you ask. Completely useless to approach in her office hours because she can't explain herself correctly and just refers you to the text book. DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PROF! Super boring lectures too.
Awful professor. Very rude to students, not clear at all and just unpleasant to be around. Avoid at ALL costs. Honestly a shame she is employed by the university.
Lamo shes a delight
Lectures are long and boring but Elena is hilarious... And everything is posted on blackboard. Generally easy course.
Rude and annoying. Class is interesting and useful for the sciences / engineering. However, don't pick that prof. She's useless, unclear and her classes are sooo boring. Her assignments are so vague and you don't even know what to write or what she's looking for. She takes attendance every class to make sure that people don't skip (or no one comes)
Entertaining lectures, mostly participation marks (for grammar "tests"), put some work into the class and you'll do well. TA was helpful. On another note, got an A+, attended all the lectures, aced the actual grammar tests, and got casually accused by her (not the TA) of plagiarism on the final paper. So yeah, that was interesting.
Lectures are useless (unless you wanna know about pronouns). assignments have nothing to do with what we "learn" in class. Really hard marker and no matter how much effort you put in the assignments she will give you max 80% on it. Hate English class. TAKES ATTENDANCE.
Good class- Elina is hilarious and very helpful. Answers questions well in lectures and works one on one with students to help them get a better grade. Really good class for science/ engineer students. In my opinion, Elina was great. She made 8:30 lectures on La Friday morning not only bearable , but interesting and fun as well. Highly recommend
By far my favourite class I took last semester. The writing skills learned and the types of documents in relation to this course will prepare you for many different professions. I found Dr. Ilina very clear on what was expected for each assignment. She also gave many opportunities for participation marks. Over all great professor and great course!
The most practical immediately applicable class I have taken so far. Isn't the most interesting material but has clear grading criteria and I had a good TA. Put in the time will get an A. (rhyme)
Elena is always there if you need help. Struggling on an assignment? Do not be scared to email her for some help. If you show you are interested and want to learn then you will do just fine. Do your homework before tests and you will do well!
She's an OK professor. My largest qualm with her was that she did not use the board enough. To me, a good professor is seen by the examples they do at the board, not in their powerpoints. On the upside, her criteria are clear. In addition, if you go see her with a draft of your assignment, then she'll give you some good tips on how to improve it.
Wouldn't recommend this prof for this course.
Prof. Ilina was was clear, concise, and very fair with her marking scheme. The quizzes and assignments, although elementary in nature, were useful in solidifying a concrete foundation for English writing in a technical environment.
Elena did a great job conveying all the material in the one class we had a week- which happened to be Monday morning at 8:30. Elena provided great feedback on my papers and was always available to help! She made the expectations clear on the reports and they were very reasonable!
She is very thorough with her lectures. Although some of the slides are summaries of the textbook, she adds a lot of her own insight, which helped a lot! Her assignment sheets are a little vague sometimes, but a quick email helps clear things up! Grammar tests are open book, and some are feebies if you attend the DGD that day! Love her humour!
Please switch your prof right now, please.
Elena Ilina is the worst professor I have ever had. This review comes after she emailed her entire Fall 2015 class claiming she was "deeply wounded" by her reviews on this website. These "negative" reviews are accurate reviews. Very disappointed in Elena's professional conduct. I would advise that any student taking ENG1112 stay away from her class
I am done with English now so I am happy but I did not enjoy the class.
Professor Ilina is always there if you need her. All you need to do to not get a bad mark is to go to her office hours and talk to her, she will explain 1 on 1. Great sense of humor, and her tests are open book, which are an easy A if your IQ is higher than 10. Do NOT RECOMMEND taking this class to those who are NOT in engineering though!
The course itself is not that interesting but the assignments were quite relevant to the engineering profession. Elena was clear on what technical aspects she expected on the assignments and didn't care about the actual content. To do well in the course just take the assignments and homework seriously and put in the time. If you do its an easy A.
Fair Professor, easy course. Zero creativity required. If you follow the appropriate conventions , you will excel in this course. Also Gemma is the best TA ever. Elena gives you all the tools you need to succeed but you still need to put in the effort, obviously. She is very helpful if you put in the time and effort. Dry lectures, however.
Good prof for sure.. She's not perfect but she definitely tries her BEST. She doesn't give up free marks why some people are mad at her, but she helps you get the knowledge you need to get a good grade.
Lays out a simple step by step process to complete assignments
English on its own is a very boring subject. Prof Elena tried so hard to make it fun. She played music at the beginning of class to keep people awake but no one ever danced. Honestly , I feel like there's nothing she can really do. I mean it's English. Plus, she's really approachable and always willing to help.
Great prof but a hard prof. With the content of this course you really can't expect to be on the edge of your seat the entire class but Elena tried. Most of the negative reviews here are from the people who won't last in engineering anyway so if you're a good student and can pay attention take Elena's class and get Gemma as a TA!
Elena is eager to help students during lectures, discussion groups and her office hours! The grading criteria for assignments is clear, and in-class quizzes are easy and open-book. The lectures are rather long and boring, but Elena does try her best to make them less dry. The assignments are also relevant to engineering careers, which is great!
I'm not sure why Elena gets so much hate from some people on here. She taught the course clearly and tried to make it interesting along the way. If you don't like the lectures because of the content, then don't go to them. I attended very few and still received an B+ in the course. There's free participation marks at the DGD's... just go to those.
She's a nice person. If she is a high school teacher, I would give her a A+. She treated us like children. Pls give us higher mark to let us study other subjects.
Elena Ilina is a good professor who unfortunately has to teach a class that no one wants to take. For my program this course is mandatory, but very useful later on. This course prepares engineering students for the types of documents that we will be encountering in the work force. Elena is very clear on what she wants from you each assignment.
She is a nice person and always helped me when I asked, if you aren't illiterate than you can get an easy B+ AT LEAST.
JUST AMAZING
SHE IS THE BEST
She's a nice prof, but she makes you work for the marks. As long as you put in all the effort required, you should come out with a decent grade. Slacking off and procrastination will leave you with a D at best. She treates you like you're in elementary school: takes attendence, no phones, no earphones. She's a kind prof who cares about her students
She's a real gem but her classes aren't really geared to preparing you for an assignment. She will show you some examples but you'll never has access to them.
Really tough grader. If you cross her, consider yourself done; she grades those whom she likes more lenient than others.
She is a very good prof. She took the time to make it clear what we had to do only projects and made herself available to help students on a one on one level. She also played music for us in the mornings before lectures. Just make sure you do the assignments the way she asks and the course should go well. Also there is alot of group work in the DGD
She doesn't know very much about what she's talking about, very rude to most students in class, pointlessly talks about stuff everyone should know wasting class time, try and switch out if you can. Probably one of the worst English profs out there. She seems like a nice enough person overall but very bad at teaching.
Professor Ilina herself is not a bad prof, but she can be a little condescending. I find the actual content of the class to be a bit of a joke. You can easily do all the papers without going to the lectures at all. She posts everything on Blackboard too, which is nice.
If you have a chance to have her as a teacher, do so. The workload is surprisingly light, as she gives no final exam. She only grades the papers you hand in. The textbook helps a lot while writing the papers, so I suggest you buy it. DGD's are mandatory, although it is not necessary to go to the lectures. She posts everything on blackboard.
She's not a bad prof, but she's not a good prof either. I literally went to two lectures the whole semester because she posts everything on Blackboard. Her explanations for certain concepts are long and most of them are common sense. The DGDs are mandatory; this is where the actual learning happens and quizzes are given.
Elena's a very thorough lecturer but the course is relatively easy (lots of basic grammar) so it's hard to make it interesting. She does a good job though. Very caring, will answer any and all questions you have. Don't be late to class (if you go).
Great prof, definitely recommend her for ENG1131! Really nice lady and explains everything really well. Her assignments and grammar quizzes are not hard and you can easily get a good mark if you follow the concepts learned in class. Discussion groups are mandatory, I was in her group and she gave really good feedback on all the assignments.
Professor Ilina makes you work for the mark. However she is very accessible in her office hours and gives very good feedback on where to improve. Overall if you put in the work and get her feedback on assignments you can get a fairly good mark. I was never great in english but still managed to get good grades with Ilina's help.
Don't go to class. Its never been more pointless. She just talks and talks about the assignments but I usually just asked my TA about those. The material she teaches in class is so pointless and its all for the grammar tests that you do in the DGD. Overall, extremely nice professor but extremely boring.
Really tough grader, if you have the chance , do not have her as the prof
Elena's lectures covered very useful concepts, and I do feel I am a stronger writer after having taken her course. However, she can be a very frustrating professor to have at times. She gives out far more assignments and quizzes than any other prof teaching the same course. Take her class if you want to learn, avoid her if you want an A+.
We didn't have any exams- just 4 assignments and some weekly online quizzes. Really easy assignments, I don't think I did any of them before the night before they were due. Knows that making science and engineering kids care about grammar and writing technicalities isn't easy, but still makes it seem slightly less boring.
Professor Ilina will give you very specific instructions on how to do an assignment, and then proceed to grade you based on a completely different set of imaginary standards. She stresses the importance of checking your work for typos, and yet her slides and emails are riddled with errors. Do not take this class.
The prof is super nice and caring. If you have a problem for submitting by a due date, go in advance and she will be super compassionate and give you the best solution. Even though she knows a student has great potential, she marks tough no matter what. Also, she is super funny! She gives great feedback, but her expectations are tricky sometimes.
She's a tough grader. I do hope that the works are graded fair and square but unfortunately not. She gives very vague feedback and she doesn't explain the grades given. When she makes a mistake, she doesn't apologize. I appreciated her time given during the office hour several times, but she decided to give me attitudes instead.
For most assignment the guidelines are very clearly provided. Sample papers, scaffolds are given for most pieces Eg. sample memos, scaffolds for research proposals etc. In fact, you can skip lectures and do assignment solely based on the provided scaffolds and materials and by reading guidelines. Teaching assistants provide good feedback.
As stated by others she marks pretty hard. I think its just because she has her own set of expectations for university students. Very caring a compassionate prof, super nice person. Easy to level with. Lectures were honestly not engaging to be honest, they're a little too slow paced. Assignments are definitely doable from content on her website.
Best teacher for the technical report writing class! She treats you like an employee, with everything building towards your final report. You're taught how to make employment documents and then various types of report that all support the final. Very useful for any engineering student!
She is a great professor because she understands students and is willing to help. However, her LaunchPad Grammar tests are really hard but other assignments are easy. Be ready to work hard!
Marvellous Prof, although her launchpad assignments are hard.
She is very confusing to understand when it comes to her assignments. If you go to her office hours and ask questions about your assignment, she will sit down and tell you how to perfect it. But when you fix everything up, she will still give you a 60 on an assignment. She doesn't care about her students and very tough with marks. Avoid her.
She is really an amazing prof. Everything is clear and the grading is not that tough.
She is a great professor, very caring like a strict mom, and posts the notes online so the information is accessible. The course is not too hard, only the launchpad assignments are hard. However, DGDs are mandatory so always arrive five minutes earlier.
elena cares about her students and if you're in her dgd group, you'll see that she's a funny and cute lady. launchpad was really annoying though - no other class had to do that + all the assignments. she is a tough grader and very specific even tho the assignments are easy. go to her office hours for tips. u rlly gotta put in effort!!
I sent her emails but she did not answer any of them. She is stright and hard to get along with. I am pretty sure that I will not take this course again.
She gives a lot of extra help and out of class help, but she is so unbelivably confusing. I find all her lectures hard to follow and when she explains concepts to me I'm left with more questions than when I started. She also has arbitrary grammar tests that don't seem to reflect report writing skill at all. She is a very tough grader.
Her lectures are so boring and you cannot hear her if you don't sit in the front. My TA is a terrible teacher and cannot explain much. Lectures are useless and we go over extremely basic concepts such as a resume or a formal letter. Learned this stuff in grade 8. Avoid this prof
A LOT of readings to do before every class. Calls you out. She doesn't make assignments clear, then gives a bad grade for not doing what is expected. Lectures are extremely dry and unorganized. Attendance is 10% of your grade. Avoid if possible!!
Very good teacher. She makes the lectures and DGDs very fun. She is definitely a harder marker for the DGDs than the TAs though.
She was very aggressive in her verbal approch to students and very unapproachable Prof. Very harsh and not empathetic for grades and assignments. Once faced with an altercation unfairly grades her students as if it is a punishment. Very unresponsive with emails. Would never have the professor again, terrible experience.
She's a very harsh person in her emails, the lecture slides are not helpful, and the lecture itself is so boring but the attendance is 10% so you have to be there, there's always a lot of reading to do. A VERY THOUGH GRADER, avoid if possible.
She's very unapproachable and an extremely tough grader. The lectures are useless and when youd ask her a question she would tell u to check the slides and thats it.
This prof was extremely unprofessional throughout the entire semester. She would constantly remind everyone in class about the rubric for assignments, then would not use them to grade. She was extremely rude when you asked for additional help by email. Add on fact that she is extremely boring while teaching, and you will hate this course.
Prof Ilina prepares you for every assignment she gives. Every week you get an assignment that you do in class together, and they're only marked on participation. As long as you show up to class, it's an easy 100 on each of those assignments. The midterm was easy, and as long as you put in the work for the assignments they are also easy.
Very easy professor gives clear marking schemes and assists at any time. Take her class.
there were 3 assignments. I started them all the day they were due. Put in 5-8 hours of work for each. The TAs are kinda useless, they just read off of slides but they also do the dgd work for you which is nice. I didnt really listen to the lectures at all just took notes once a blue moon.
Please try to avoid her, otherwise you would regret it. Next year, you will take the communication skills course which your professor will only teach you about 5 hours in total due to he believes that you have already learned all the knowledge in this course. Actually, you did not because what she taught you is not what she marks your work.
Would not recommend taking her classes. Consists of 5 group projects which you only receive your group the day it is due. Discussions on assignments and how to do them the day they are due as well. So many useless novels and short stories to read that have no significance to assignments. Tough marker and doesn't follow the rubric she gives you.
Terrible Teacher. she just doesn`t care about the students at all. She will give you assignments and any questions you have, she will tell you to look at the slides she posted. Literraly unaproachable by email, she will tell you to bring your questions to class, but when you do, she wount bother answering any of them.
She's not as bad as everyone says but she's not perfect either. In class she's a really nice and caring lady and explains the topics well, and everything is posted on brightspace so no issues there. However, she's a very tough grader. But I'm not sure if it was her or the TA's marking the assignments... Last thing, by email she is quite cold...
She's a really nice person and very passionate about what she does which makes the class more engaging, but the workload is a lot compared to other classes.
Her skill builders were awful, her teaching awful, the way she graded and couldn't open PDFs like a regular being and not gas light me for submitting a warped document, awful. She told me I was going to fail and drop out, after this I was certain I was getting an A+, fast forward, after a lot of sucking up I got away, but don't get stuck. BE WARNED
She might be caring and kind during the lectures, however do not let it fool you into believing that she'll be generous with the grades. She is extremely tough at grading and she finds it hard to stick to the rubric designed to grade the assignments. I would say try and avoid her if you can.
Honestly, she really does care about her students but you have to show interest in her class. Do so by emailing her your questions and requesting Zoom meetings. I do not think she is a tough grader but start your formal report early since it does take a bit of time.
She's not an amazing professor, but she's not as bad as everyone says. Yes, it is true you will have a lot of things to read, her lectures are dry, and her expectations are very high. However, getting an A or at least a B+ in her class is not difficult. Will I take her class again? No, but I do recommend her if you don't have any other options.
She's such a G. I took her during the summer and you can tell she loves English and teaching. Everything was fairly straight forward. I considered her an easy marker because the things I wrote were not my best work but she always gave me 80% or more and her feedback was good. If you go to class she literally gives you everything you need to succeed
I don't understand all the hate, she's actually a lovely professor! Her course material is very straightforward which I really appreciate, and none of her assignments are "tricky", just simple and useful. She even provides us with templates and rubrics for everything, so we know EXACTLY what to do and how.
Elena is a very nice professor. She has a passion for her subject that makes learning much more enjoyable. She posts weekly briefings that detail the learning plan, so students can be prepared. There are 2 textbooks, but they are not mandatory (I didn't get them and did fine). Additionally, she is available for questions outside of class.
Her online lectures are boring and tedious and her brightspace is poorly organized. On the other hand the class itself is easy to get a good grade in.
Professor Elena's class is a mixed bag. The lectures can be dry, but she provides clear guidelines and is happy to clarify concepts. Using unstuckstudy alongside the free textbook helped me stay on top of the workload.
Overall she is very nice and willing to help. I personally found the online lectures to be very boring and hard to follow. However she does record them so its nice to look back on. I also found the grading lacked proper feedback and was very vague. The class also had a heady workload relative to my peers who had different professors.
If you follow rubrics to a T you'll still get a bad grade. she knows who you are and only cares about you if you care so show interest and good luck.
The lectures are a bit hard to follow but recorded and uploaded on Brightspace afterwards so it's not too bad. I found some of her feedback confusing or vague for the essays. The Brightspace is organized by week which is nice to stay up to date on content but if you want to re-read a particular slide deck you have to go back and find it again.
She is really strict on course policy and does not allow flexibility. her teaching style is very old-school
Professor Ilina is just such a hard grader that it's impossible to do well with her. No matter how well you write, she will always find problems with your essay.
