Enthusiastic, but very tough exams! Lecture material does not correspond to textbook and exam.
Great prof!! Love her stories about her kids. Very helpful. Her notes are better than the text (which is so boring).
..not I want her hot, but I love her hair. Very enthusiastic, helpful. It's kind of misleading because her exams are hard. The course is still easy, and she made it pretty fun. Lots of stories.
Notes were not helpful, tested greatly on textbook. Exams difficult
Horrible prof!!! she seriously mis pronounces things, stumbles over words, gives pointless stories, notes that are virtually useless and causes a hatred of the course. i would never take a course she offered ever again.
Sure, the tests were hard, but everyone did poorly so my 72% got me an A. The projects will also give EASY marks. The class is a joke, but it's fun and interesting. She really loves what she does, and you can do well on the exam if you just read the text.
hard exams, her hair drives me nuts, notes don't really help, but lectures aren't bad. a little hard to listen to her though, she stumbles over words but shes very into what she does.
Elena is super-nice and down to earth and does her best to help you out if you need it. If you actually do your work then you'll be fine. Give her a chance- she's a great lady.

Ok prof. I really couldn't stand the lectures though, quite pointless. She loves psychology, but she needs to understand that not everyone else does! more discussions than teaching. Exams r ok. the class avg was 65% - which she said was good! study txtbook, pay some attention, and do the projects!
She's very interesitng and entertaining, and quite clear. If she stumbles over a word it's not so bad that you can't figure out what she's talking about. I've never actually noticed her do this. She's a fabulous professor and I would definitely take another course from her.
The class was a waste of time - everything was straight out of Psych 223. The lectures were boring and always based on her own research and the textbook sucks! Very difficult to understand - nothing is clear and everything had to be clarified. At least the exams are easy!
Lectures were really pointless, got out of class 40 min early quite a bit (in an 80 min class) the class was SO easy. At times was interesting but mostly quite dull. Book was more interesting in my opinion, she is very enthusiastic, she's not all bad, just needs more useful lectures
The classes were pretty boring and the text that she chose to use had to be the most boring brutal piece of garbage i've ever HAD to read.
She is a very good prof. I'm surprised to read bad reviews. She teaches by relating cognitive development to real world examples (much better than just dry memorization of boring facts in a textbook). She does give a lot of assignments but it helps you to keep up and makes studying for exams easier
I guess scatterbrained would about sum her up. The lectures seem disorganized and last minute.
She is a very nice lady, and she gets really excited about the material she teaches which is nice to see. Very approachable and personable.
I'm surprised she doesn't have a higher rating. Obvious enthusiasm for her subject and reasonably well organized. Lots of interesting case studies mentioned in lecture, so it never felt dull. Tries to get to know all her students. Exams can be tough but always fair.
If you go to her class and write down everything she says, you will do well. The text is a waste of money, but if you feel guilty read the summaries and you are good. Projects are dumb and time consuming but will pull your marks up, choose the video not the research project the marks were much higher with the video
disorganized and rushed.
she is one of the nicest profs i have ever had, she is completely fair in all of her grading and is willing to go to great lengths to help us
She is one of the best profs I've had. She's extremely approachable and friendly, and a very fair marker.
Comes off all sweet and nice--which i think she is...but her exams are killer. Can't stand when profs have a big end-of-the-year project AND still make u write a final exam--which she does. Not only that but her exams are mc, short answer, short essay (1 page), and long essay (1-2pages)..ALL IN ONE EXAM. She needs to calm down with all that.
This professor seems to genuinely care about her students. However, she has very high expectations for grading in a 300 level course. She expects an average for a 300 level course to be at least 75% with a B- for average. Also you have to go to every lecture, since she does not post her notes. Only provides very useless outlines of lecture.
Her class was the easiest 300 I've taken. There was a weekly quiz and the exams are long (MC, short answer and essay) but straight forward and easy. Very easy marker, quizzes were an easy 10% almost always gave full marks if you explained your answer. Definitely recommend this course with this prof for a GPA booster
Shes a good proff but get ready to do a lot of work throughout the semester.
She is so crazy! Very enthusiastic about psychology. There's a huge project worth 30% that takes up a lot of time. Her tests are super hard. Her in class notes are very hard to follow. I wouldn't recommend her.
WONDERFUL! I loved Elena and her class. Lots of peoples say she was disorganized, but everything made sense to me. Doesn't post her notes online so either attend often or have friends in the class and share. If you have a question ask her, she will answer it and she will answer it well. Highly recommend Elena AND this course. :)
Where to begin. She has never taught 223 and I can tell why.Has NO notes and doesnt really give any notes in class either so u make ur own notes from the textbook.a quiz every class for every chapter.there are 20 chapters.so 2 chapters a week which is hefty. and quizzes aren't easy either.maybe the exams are easy, but ull have 2 get to them first
It's her first time teaching this class, she has no notes or slides & all we do in class is have discussions. Group chats in a class of 300+ students doesn't work! You can't hear half of what the student say. Also listening to her say umm & ugh 35+ times in 5 minutes gets pretty distracting. It's a read the textbook & hope for the best type class.
She brings her preschooler to class when we're trying to write our midterm! The kid is talking, singing and calling for her mama. NOT FAIR! Lectures are pointless, no slides, no structure, we just chat in groups while she scratches her head a lot. She seems to see us all as a big experiment...how much we will tolerate amuses her.
This class destroyed my semester. Her biweekly quizzes meant reading 2 chapters a week. We put in a lot of effort and didn't benefit. Spent tons of time reading for quizzes that had very specific questions, and it took time away from focusing on other classes. She doesn't make notes, doesn't have structure, and brings her kid to class.
It is obviously that she knows her stuff, but the way she teaches this course is like you are in two different courses. Usually what we discussed in class didn't really pertain to what we were learning in the text (and making our own notes on). Impossible to know what to study for exams. Which were crazy hard. Our class was more of an experiment.
Elena was very friendly, but her class was very poor. Her teaching had very little to do with the text, and the chat groups were a waste of time. There was a lot of extra work, and I didn't feel like I actually learned that much about the subject.
If I could have answered zero for every option above, I would have. Terrible teaching ability. She did absolutely no prep for class, had no notes, and was very hard to understand. I will never take a class with her again. Ever.
Bi weekly quizzes were helpful in understanding important material although did take a lot of time. Attendance not at all mandatory. Exams were difficult because they required random bits of textbook information.
Challenging course- two quizzes and around 60-70 pages of reading per week. Tests are challenging and focus on minute details in the textbook. Lectures were disorganized and boring. Two papers are also required. Not recommended.
First, the good: She definitely delves deeply into research pertaining the material learned, and is adamant about introducing us to the scientific aspects of the course. That being said, I hated the class. It felt unstructured. None of the lectures had anything to do with the material in the textbook. Lots of extra work, and frustrating exams.
I Loved this class. Elena was so excited to teach this class and you could see that she has a passion for what she does. Chapter reading quizzes were helpful. There are many ways to boost you mark in this class with group discussions and 2 assignments. If you attend class and do the reading this class is an easy GPA booster.
I was actually excited for this class, but it turned out to be the least favourite class I have ever taken. You basically have to teach yourself the material from the textbook and take an online quiz for each chapter, then you go to an unorganized lecture and listen to mostly irrelevant material. It was a lot of work., wouldn't recommend.
Enthusiastic prof but all her classes consisted of us critiquing citations from the book, and exams are very difficult make sure you know the questions from chapter tests cause they are the same ones on the midterms
Very scatterbrained. Lectures aren't very relevant (we watched sesame street videos) and you will mostly be tested on textbook material. Discussion groups were a waste of time.
Terrible prof who is more concerned with testing you on the "course material" than teaching concepts. Disorganized and inconsistent. Dont go to lecture, just read the book, better yet dont take this class. Written response questions are vague. MC questions are trivial and focus on the tiny details of stories in the book. I regret taking this class
I like Elena as a person. She seems to be very quirky, smart and passionate about what she teaches. Despite this, her lectures sometimes felt off topic and unrelated to developmental psychology. Her exams are not too hard, but I would've preferred her to cover more of the textbook material in class.
Her lectures were pretty much pointless. I don't know why I bothered showing up as nothing in class. I didn't really learn anything from her, and nothing from the textbook was covered even though we had to read three chapters a week. The class discussions and assignments were an absolute joke. AVOID!
When reading the reviews for Elena, I found them so far from the truth! I loved the set up of her course: 3 midterms, two simple assignments(one page double space review of a study), easy group work sessions that took up class time, and best of all no final!
Boring course, and the Prof. Nicoladas LOVES Piaget more than any prof should. Literally, just study every thing Piaget and you'll ace it all. Papers and group work were simple, but midterms were brutal. Lots of tricky questions with more than one right answer. No final though, which was nice.
No structure to her class, especially when it came to grading rubrics or lectures. No power points or notes on eClass, instead hand wrote her notes on the board. Biggest problem was her lack of rubrics for assignments, as the instructions were unclear, which led to confusion as to what we were being marked on. Wouldn't take her class again.
Elena is very passionate, fun and quirky. Her classes are not really structured, more like a discussion. I know that's not for some, but I enjoyed it as it made the information clear and stick in my head. Big projects were lots of work but fun. Only thing I didn't like about the class was the lack of clear instructionsexpectations on assignments.
The best psychology prof I have ever had!
One of the worst instructors as she simply doesn't teach the testable material in her useless lectures. Read the book, don't go to class. This prof has one of the highest enthusiasm to incompetency ratios I've encountered. Avoid.
Solid choice for a prof. Very kind and helpful. Exams are not too difficult. Very fair!
This prof used no textbook in this class, instead she used many articles (the majority being published 20 or more years ago) that were written in pretentious and academic language that results in you falling asleep in your chair while trying to read them. She also doesn't agree with what some of the articles say, so be prepared to be confused. BAD
She's very caring towards her students, and the test questions were easy for the lecture notes, but when questioned on the article it can be quite hard as the articles are somewhat difficult. The TA this year for her class was not good as she took forever to mark out assignments and then marked super hard, still havent gotten second one back yet.
Loved her so much. She was so enthusiastic about the material and made it interesting. Her assignments weren't hard and were easy grade boosters. I thought she was pretty clear about what would be on the exams, and she didn't try to trick you. Definitely would recommend!
very enthusiastic and approachable, also really nice. will go and find relevant research to answer your questions, which i found admirable. articles instead of textbook; some are dry but overall interesting enough. word choices in exams sometimes bit weird but fair. TA is v. nice but slow marker. pretty easy - minimal effort can get you at least b+
Does not give clear instructions for assignments and marks harshly - a lot of group work. Would not recommend.
VERY unclear instructions for assignments and expects way too much for a 300-level class. Too many group projects. No structure to the class. I am considering dropping the course even though I am interested in child development because the prof is not good at all and makes me DREAD class.
Midterm short answer questions are short and vague. If you don't have exactly what she wants you fail. She has extremely erratic lectures. You do an extreme amount of group work for 2% of your grade. Quizzes on every article you read for a total of 3%. Overall I would rather drop the class and retake it than continue on with her as the professor.
Honestly, she was awful. Knew her stuff, but her exams were based half on lectures and half on articles that took forever to read. Assignments were long, and useless. You're way better off taking this class with a different prof or even just going online and looking at articles, just as we did in class...
Elena is a super nice person, just not the best prof. Instrustions for group work was vague and confusing. No textbook but you are required to read a lot of research papers. The lecture content was not what I expected for this course either. I would recommend taking this course with a different prof, wish I did.
Elena is a really caring and knowledgeable prof but her lectures are really dry. She doesn't use textbook but makes you read really old research papers and there are group meetings which are complete waste of your time. Her exams and assignments are pretty straight forward if you study.
There is no textbook for this class, so going to class is manatory if you want to pass. She gives a lot of information during lectures so make sure you are writing it down as most of the powerpoints are pretty simple. She tests pretty fair, and there is no final for this class just three mid terms that are not cumlative.
I really enjoyed Elenas class, and she gave us so many opportunities to succeed: 2 easy assignments, 4 group discussions that help you prepare for SA questions in the exams, 3 midterms and no final, and easy online quizzes on the assigned article readings. Her exams were very fair and her lectures were easy to follow. She is also really kind!
Dr. Nic organizes course so that the student has multiple opportunities to succeed from almost bare minimum effort and participation that is actually enjoyable and not difficult/ awkward. Subject matter is super interesting as she is very knowledgeable & pulls from many relevant studies to keep class entertaining. Super kind & encourages questions.
Extremely boring, each lecture is just her saying "ummm" and rambling, causing you to have learned nothing and have no clue what to study. Tested heavily on 20 page research articles that aren't gone over it class, which are also convoluted and lack definite answers. If you love arts psych, maybe this is for you. Otherwise, pick another prof PLEASE
So far in this class is a struggle, she gives many articles that are 20 pages long and does not explain or go over the important material. Her written questions she wants a specific answer and even if what you write down is right well you're out of luck. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROF
Lovely prof!! Lovely person. Take a course with Elena and get ready to think critically and learn a lot! Would absolutely recommend
Couple assignments and the course was fine but her midterms are made of short answer and multiple choice and there are way too many readings. The readings are on tests and most of them are long and boring, there's about 13. But overall, no textbook which is good and she's generally a good teacher but get ready to read and she's a tough marker.
2 assignments, 13 readings w/ 5 question quizzes, 4 group meetings w/ self evals, 3 non-cumulative midterms (no final). honestly, don't learn much in class and then on the midterms get tested on things you'd consider not important. makes an easy course super confusing but she's a nice person, just not the best teacher. also write everything she say
Her syllabus seemed like there was a ton of work to do, but it really wasnt. The readings were never long and reading quizzes were an easy A. You only met with a group 4 times and it was like a review for the written part of the midterm. You cant just rely on her ppt because they dont have all the information on them. She was a great prof
13 assigned articles to read instead of textbook, 4 group meetings and 2 wrriten assignment- seemed very horrible yet if you attend the lecture and write down word to word what she says & read articles, you get an easy A. I never put an effort for this course and did minimal work, yet it was still fine. Elena def made lecture intersesting as well.
Funny lectures, exams are 50% what she says in class. The other 50% are from assigned readings which are relatively easy, and an autobiography of your choice. I never even read the book and managed to get full marks. Group projects, you meet outside of class, often a nice break from regular lectures, and easy marks but i was assigned lazy partners
Elena was an extremely inspiring and caring prof. She was always more than willing to support me after class ended or within her office hours. She always makes interesting connections to the real world and research. Class is very fair if you are actually willing to put in the work, as any class should be. Take her.
Elena has a lovely way of speaking that makes her lectures super engaging! Her course content and the studies that she makes you read are actually interesting and relevant, especially with respect to Indigenous issues and LGBTQ+ issues. The workload was not the most I've seen from a class but the deadlines are very firm.
Elena is excellent at explaining concepts and provides many examples to help you understand. Her lectures are vague and could use a tad more information. The course included many small tasks that comprised a good portion of your grade, which made it easier to get a high mark. My only complaint was that she tested too much on readings. Way too much!
Elena was one of the best profs I had this online semester. There is no textbook, just lectures and readings. Though there are a lot of readings, I found them much more digestible than textbooks. Her lectures were also very well done and straight to the point. She offers lots of opportunities for grade boosts too as assignments are fairly simple
Elena is a very approachable and kind-hearted professor. 223 in Fall 20 had 3 non-cumulative midterms, 2 papers, 13 academic paper readings, an autobiography reading, and 10 zoom group meetings. Her lectures were asynchronous and each was about 20 minutes long. Follow the recommended schedule on the syllabus for a fairly easy A.
Dr. Nicoladis was my fav prof this term. This was the easiest psyco course I've taken. Tests are extremely fair considering it's open book. Most assignments you can get full marks, or nearly full. Her lectures were Google Drive videos and usually around 20 minutes. Zoom group meetings is a nice interaction in this age of quarantine and isolation.
Elena is very kind, understanding and empathetic and this shows in her interactions with students, the structure of her course, as well how she communicates the content in her lectures. No textbook but some pretty boring papers, many small assignments, and lots of free participation marks. Explains concepts well- important to write what she says.
Elena is a solid prof, kind, gives good lectures, and is engaging. The course content is also really interesting. My only issue with the class was group discussions and question write-ups. There are also lots of assignments worth small amounts of marks, so just be ready to do lots of little things.
This has been by far my favourite class ever. If you put in work you will do well. But it also doesn't require an excessive amount of work. Lots of smaller assignments but they are fairly easy to complete. Take this class with her!!!!!!
No textbook, just readings which are old and outdated. Weekly group meetings with group homework. Surface level teaching/info, often times doesn't even teach it, just wants you to infer the info yourself. Most info is self taught from readings. Missing a lot of the info that this course should be providing. Two writing assignments
There were weekly group assignments as well as many small assignments to raise your mark. The midterms tested half the readings and half the lecture notes. The lecture notes were pre-recordedand very straightforward. Stay on top of the readings, lectures, and attend the weekly group meetings and you will be fine.
For online classes it was a lot of work load. The midterms were open book and based on lecture and readings and weren't too hard. There was two assignments that were pretty easy. There is group meetings ever Wednesday and self evaluations for easy marks. There was a lot of discussion posts that you have to keep track of and was hard to remember
She was a good prof, no textbook but a ton of articles to read!!
Probably my easiest class last semester! Lectures are short and the work load is manageable. Elena makes sure to get to the point and I believe she is pro-student, meaning that she really cares about her students' success. The assignments weren't too difficult and there were a lot of opportunities to improve your grade.
I really enjoyed taking 223 with Dr. Nicoladis. She made her lectures short and sweet and assigned case studies to read instead of a textbook. Her class wasn't very hard but I still feel like I learned a lot.
I loved the way Elena taught psyco223. She had us read actual experiments, and encouraged us to think for ourselves to resolve questions, instead of saying this is what is right, this is the only answer. I loved the atmosphere of critical thinking that she created in the class!! 100% would take another course taught by her.
One of my fav profs. You can tell she genuinely cares about her students and their wellbeing. Mondays we had an optional live question period and Wednesdays we had mandatory live group discussions. There were lots of opportunities to improve grades, and she was straight to the point.
I found that I was marked much harder by the professor than the TA's. I also found that the feedback I received was often "this sentence doesn't make sense," when it in fact did to others that have read the same document.
