This class was a lot of hard work for two credits. Class was very WebCT based. If you have Pravosudova, rather than a TA, the class is ten times harder. Even if you turn in perfect work, she'll take a point off: she just doesn't give perfect grades. Subject to favoritism. As if working in groups the whole time wasn't enough!
Basically she is the worst teacher I've ever had. She is very unclear during lectures, and the one time I asked her to clarify something she was no help. I do not recommend her at all. You'll need to teach yourself and hope that you don't need help, cause she won't give you any!
Elena was a very good teacher, she is extremely knowledgeable in the field and is very good at explaining things in more understandable terms. She is very easy to get along with and very helpful outside of class. As long as you attend lecture and pay attention you will be ok. If you plan to sleep in class or talk the whole time, take another class
Pretty tough class for 100 level. Hard to understand her at times. Make sure you do all of the practice questions before each test and you should be fine.
i had alex alexiades for my lab TA. hes amazing nice and super sexy! elena doesnt actually teach any of the labs. it was a great and fun class
I didn't have her as a prof but she is my adviser and probably the best adviser I have had in my entire college career. She didn't make me feel stupid and she sat down with my for over half an hour planning out my schedule with me . She is the best
Elena is a fantastic instructor and wants you to learn. If you are not there to work, don't take this class. Very organized and somewhat demanding, be ready to work hard and enjoy a great class!
Great professor! The class takes work, but if you're a science major or interested in th topic it's worth it! I highly recommend the study groups that are for extra credit, they help a lot. Read the book and do the practice questions and you'll find the tests are pretty easy.
This class is really easy. Dr. Pravosudova offers so much extra credit that it's hard not to do well in her class. Her lectures could be a little more engaging, but she makes the material clear. Make sure to do the practice problems as the test questions are pulled straight from them. An easy A. Plus, the quizzes are online - open book...
I took a class from Elena a while ago, and although challenging, it was interesting. I have been working with Elena for almost 2 years now, and I am a TA for her Biology 190 course. She is incredibly down to earth and extremely helpful. She is very pleasant and a pleasure to work with all around. She is a fantastic professor, adviser, and mentor.
The class is chalenging but elena makes it possible to pass with an A. Go to lecture, do all hw, study from the review questions(which are straight from previous tests), and go to study group.... keep up and BIO 190 will be a breaze... highly recommended as a teacher!!
Didn't ever see her once. The labs are taught entirely by a TA and graded by the TA. Basic lab with some writing assignments. Basically, hope you get a good TA.
Prof. Pravosudova is a great teacher! She is very nice if you aren't disrupting class. She tries to do a lot of different styles of teaching to keep everyone interested. She likes it if you get involved too. You can tell she really loves this subject. I think she would be great in a smaller class, but her lecture classes were good. Take her class!
Pravosudova is one of the best teachers at UNR. To get an easy A in her class all you do are those practice questions she gives. When I took her class, literally all I did and got an A. She has a strong accent, but still understandable. She's very nice and sincere. If I had teh chance, I'd take her again.
She is my counselor and I took two classes from her. She is probably the nicest person I have ever met, and willing to help out in anyway possible, even if it is in a class she doesn't teach. Love her to death, and her classes are easy and provide you with everything you need to take upper division courses.
This class is not advisable to those not majoring in any science. Very difficult class with more work than any of my other classes combined, but I worked my butt off and scraped an A, you can do it if you work hard and pay attention.
Decent teacher, rather difficult but you can get an A if you go to class, read and study a lot!
Worst professor I have taken at UNR. Teaches a 190 like a 490. Hard and hard to show sympathy for.
She's a really nice lady and she tries to make lectures interesting by telling jokes and using examples. Attendance is kinda mandatory... we get asked questions via clicker, but you only need to attend about half of all lectures to get full attendance points for the semester. Homework and quizzes are super easy, test are pretty difficult =[
What a joke of a class! Never met the teacher or told the class if you have any problems with the TA let me know, nothing. It is taught by TA only. If you are taking this class, i hope you have taken english 101 and 102 first because this is an English class not a science class! Beware! Dont take labs from Katie Henklehorn, horrible TA!
I don't agree with the poster before me. Although decent writing skills are required, not a lot is required from the class. I started every major assignment after 12 am the night before it was due and got an A on every major assignment and an A in the class. Early on, make sure your lab buddies are hardworking and intelligent. Mine were awesome!
I disagree with the poster below. This one of the worst classes at UNR. A lot of work for 2 credits. Also a lot of group projects which don't work out well especially depending on the chemistry between the group members. Overall don't take unless you completely are required too.
Horrible professor. very nice lady but doesn't understand that biology isn't everyones world. Alot of memorizing little details rather then the whole picture. Exams are ridiculously hard.
I'm a first semester freshman, and I got an A in this class. This class is not a lot of work, and it's not hard at all. I don't know why people are complaining.
This class is not too hard, just make sure you study her lecture notes and the practice exam also make sure you do all your homework and quizes, this class is based on points!!!
Too much group work and not an enough individual.
Class taught by TA. A lot of writing, and group work. We had to go out and dig holes in the snow to catch bugs...not to crazy about this class. Webct lectures narrated my Ellena, webct quizzes and in class quizzes. Waste of time honestly, but not a terrible class.
I had her for an Biol190H and she was great! Many other people in the class didn't enjoy it, but what I loved was her clear passion for Biology. Because we were an Honors class, the class size was around 20 so we got plenty of individual attention. Many non-honors students don't like her class, but since we were honors, she loved us and was biased
Wonderful professor! Explains things clearly and makes it interesting. Lots of chances for extra credit, although quizzes and exams are a little difficult. Genuinely cares about her students. Absolutely love her.
Difficult class, but extremely fundamental if you plan on taking biology later on. You can tell she knows what she's talking about, she uses great (and funny) examples, and she is extremely helpful and very good with getting back to emails. Highly recommend her for any bio class.
She is very nice but I did not enjoy her lectures. She seemed to go off on tangents that did not help and her tests were difficult. I would not recommend taking her class.
I absolutely loved her class and the extra credit discussions really saved me when it came to exams. It is not easy at all, nobody told me not to take this class as an incoming freshman so I had a bit of a tougher time keeping up in the beginning. If you work hard, you will get a good grade, definitely not a class that you can slack off in AT ALL.
Great teacher, she gives you a lot of tools to succeed, its really hard to fail the class. With the help from all the click er and extra credit points I got an A in the class, even when I received C's on the test. Drops your lowest test score too!
Fairly easy class, Hardly ever say Elana though, your TA is basically your teacher throughout the semester, but she will occasionally check in. This is a Lab class and the labs are fairly easy, however there is a very large deal of writing involved.
Pravosudova is very enthusiastic about the subject so she's a better lecturer than most. Discussion groups help a lot, ask questions in class, spend some time looking over the chapters in the textbook and you'll do great. Quizzes sucked for me but if you get As on the tests then it doesn't matter. Good class!
Super nice teacher and easy. Just study the powerpoints and you will do fine
Elena is great! One of my favorite professors. She really helps you grasp the concepts in her lectures. However, you will have to put work in outside of class. This is not an easy A course. Read all the material before class so you understand it, then use Elenas lectures to help you clarify the harder points. (Come to class for the clicker points!)
Very enthusiastic lady, tests are difficult because of the unexpected Organic Chemistry aspects. Nevertheless, they can be prepared for provided you attend lecture daily, look over quizzes, and read the book. Oh, and the online lecture. She's friendly. Accent is clear and fine.
Preposterous disciplinary measures: missing 2 labs gives you an automatic F. Missing one lab cost me minus 7% of the total possible points. Two times 5-minute tardy- minus additional 7%. This brought me down from "A" to "C." Prof. Prof. Pravosudova seems to think she is in command of the army during turbulent was times.
Hard to understand, both from accent and lack of explanation of material. Office hours-she usually isnt there if she is she degrades you instead of helping. Since she is the head of biology there is no where to complain to. Requires a discussion and online listenings of lectures that are poorly recorded and hard to decipher. Avoid this class;.
Professor Pravosudova is awesome! She's so enthusiastic about biology and she loves honors students! Her notes can be vague or confusing sometimes and the weekly quizzes are hard but she's totally fair. Let her proof read your paper and you'll get a 100%. Attend discussion group and do extra credit and you'll do well! She truly wants you to succeed
Clicker questions are extra credit. She has an accent but it's really easy to understand. Her tests are really tough, but do-able.
I saw Elena once for 30 seconds on the first day of lab, but that was it. It is a very organized lab with everything on webcampus. Your class depends on your TA, mine was awesome and helpful with the labs. The class has several weekly assignments, so staying on top of what is due is important. Got out early usually. The lab practical was alright.
She is very kind and intelligent. She enjoys helping her students and she gives extra credit. This class was easy except the exams were challenging. Extra credit for showing up to lecture.
Do NOT take this class online. It shouldn't be online. There is to much information you will live in the textbook, teaching yourself everything through outside resources. Miserable amount of time on mastering biology and it is a huge part of your grade. The lectures speed through the material and she has a difficult to understand accent.
The instructor has a lot of respect for Honor students. She is very helpful when answering questions and outside of class. She makes it clear that you need a strong conceptual understanding of the material in order to do well in her class. Her weekly quizzes and tests are fairly challenging. She is reasonable and fair with overall grades though.
Hardest class I've taken. Since she's head of her department, she expects everyone to fully understand biology the way she does. Her review sessions for the exams are not helpful whatsoever. She asks what you want to know about the exam and it still doesn't clarify anything. Good luck taking the class, you'll need everything you can get.
My least favorite class I have ever taken. Extremely difficult, did not learn anything during lecture!
not helpful when it comes to tests, you don't get a study guide. She expects everyone to be great at biology from the beginning instead of getting them comfortable with the concept. I failed every test no matter how hard I studied or how much I went to her office hours.
She DOES give study guides for tests. You do have to study outside of class time but she tells you that on the first day. Its not super easy material, but study and read and you can get it!
Take the time to read the book and make sure to attend discussion. lecture is so long and boring but I learned most by going to discussion. She's actually pretty nice and helpful if you go to her office. Hard class though! study study study for the exams!
I absolutely loved this class! She is so funny during lectures, and you get extra credit for attending and answering the Catalytics questions. The tests can be challenging, but if you read the chapters ahead of time, pay attention in discussion groups, and do practice questions, you should be fine! Very nice and helpful in and outside of class!
Didn't learn a thing in any of the lectures I attended. Got more information and clarity from my discussion section TA in one class then I did from her in the whole course, no study guides, WHAT ALSO HELPED THE MOST IS ONLINE FLASHCARDS AND QUIZZES ON QUIZZLET!!!! ALL quiz/hmwk questions can be found there as well
Elena is awesome. Everyone is complaining about not having a study guide, well its college so grow up. There are so many resources for that class that if you don't get atleast a B you are just lazy. Discussions are helpful and she gave 3% EC for doing questions during lectures. Super awesome during office hours and would take more classes from her.
Dr. Pravosudova is very knowledgeable in regards to Biology. She is clear in her schedule, and the class is pretty routine. The tests can be pretty difficult, so begin studying early. The extra credit at the end of the semester boosted my grade 4%, so be sure to participate and attend lectures. Use the textbook and online videos, they do help.
Dr. Pravosudova is such a helpful professor and really cares about her students. She always makes the lectures fun and interactive and she makes sure that the students understand the material. I always was excited to come to class and learn new stuff, and because the learning assistants in the class are really cute. Take this class!
She obviously knows a lot about biology but has no idea how to teach at all. I honestly learned more from reading my textbook and discussions than i ever did in lectures. She goes on multiple tangents every class and never really goes over the most important stuff on our exams.
Take a different Bio teacher. She is obsessed with learning catalytic's, is not clear with anything she teaches and her tests are roughhh
Choosing her was the worst decision ever. All her material is scattered everywhere from online powerpoints to the textbook. I literally learned nothing from lecture since she covers like a quarter of the material in class and expects us to learn the rest on our own. She basically expects you to know the material for the exams.
She is the worst professor ever. I regret taking her. I learned nothing from her class. She is literally so unorganized everything is scattered and she is just not helpful at all. You have to do learning catalytic and its a waste of time going to her lectures. The class isn't hard itself it's the way she teaches that makes it hard.
Elena knows Biology so well, but her quizzes and discussion are so difficult. She wants you to include every little detail, if you don't you will get terrible grades on everything and she doesn't care. Hard to work for your grade when you don't have a clear understanding of what you're supposed to be doing.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. It is impossible to succeed in this class unless you are willing to put in an extreme amount of effort. Two tests make up 45 percent of your grade and are very difficult. Not worth taking online
There is no clear grading criteria in this class and no matter what you do you're always behind. She tests you on material you have not yet learned (on quizzes and learning catalytics) which wrecks your grade and prevents you from doing well. You have to teach yourself all of the material because lecture is so confusing. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Professor Pravosudova I felt did an amazing job making sure we had many different exposures to the material we needed to learn. Through the homework, learning catalytics in class, and mandatory discussion groups, I felt it was really easy to study and understand the material. You have a lot of participation in class that can give you extra points.
Pravosudova does not care about the well being of her students. She takes off points for everything, her learning catalytics questions are more frustrating than helpful and her tests require so much detail. Definitely avoid her class if you can.
Overall if you do the work, the lab is fairly easy. The modules on webcampus had all the info you needed. The only downfall is the writing assignments and group projects. The writing assignments were easy but it all depends on your TA. The group projects weren't my favorite because my group had a hard time meeting up with our busy schedules.
Difficult class but easy learning. Many helpful resources
This class is pretty easy in general. She has a slight accent which makes it hard to understand certain words and she moves very quickly. I recommend reading the textbook chapters to get a grasp on the material before going to class or you will be lost on some of the harder concepts. She drops a test so its pretty easy to get a good grade.
I got to know her before I took her class and she is a very caring, sweet person. I didn't do the greatest in her class but that's because I didn't try very hard. There are many great resources and you go over most of the material in discussion. You should read the book and go to class, where you'll get a lot of points. Tests are mostly MC
Her exams are tough bc she makes you apply the material it isnt just basic vocab. She is a wonderful professor and tries to make things as clear as she can. Learning Catalytics points are easy points so make sure you show up to class and do them! She does provide a study guide before exams. Difficult class if you slack off
Learning Catalytic questions are your best friend here (easy points so do them) She drops lowest test score, there are discussions once a week were you learn more clearly want went on in the lecture. She spends some lectures stuck on one slide so it is easy to get bored fast. Not bad professor her accents isn't bad like everyone says.
Hard to understand sometimes, but overall ok. Learnt more from discussion than in lecture, lots of homework and outside quizzes also. Learning Catalytics goes along with the lecture so show up! Drops one exam grade but exams are applied material and critical thinking so try to understand the material, don't just know it. Study guides provided.
In her BIOL190 class, Dr. Pravosudova uses a flipped-classroom approach, meaning that you watch her online lectures and BioFlix videos, do homework assignments, and are quizzed on the chapter in discussion before you ever learn any of the content from lectures. It can be confusing, so stay up to date with textbook readings and the online lectures.
Dr. Pravosudova's class is memorization heavy, but the TAs are helpful for preparing for the test. Lectures are mandatory (learning catalytics) but you NEED to read the textbook because there is a lot not covered in class. Her class is structured to force you to memorize and review things so you have lots of things due throughout the week
Prof. Pravosudova was quirky, and I enjoyed her lectures. The mandatory discussion groups each week were extremely helpful, as were the review sessions held before each test. I found notecards and diagrams to be helpful when studying. Make sure to either write down or remember the dynamic study module questions for quizzes. She also uses LC.
Pravusodova is a teacher that in regards to the material has a tight grasp on it, When it comes to teaching that said material we have an entirely different story you are better off taking someone else, she is very unorganized when it comes to tests & the materials on the test. I.E. the lecture slides will not be on the exam in any shape or form.
Material is fairly easy but does not do a good job at explaining it. Her lectures are very unorganized and boring.
Dr. Pravosudova is a good professor and makes the material clear that you need to know. Missing one or two classes won't hurt but Learning Catalytics is used during lecture for participation points. Having a good discussion leader is helpful to mastering the material (quizzes before every discussion). Keep a good schedule with weekly homework!
Each week one of the two class days has a quiz at the beginning where you had to watch videos before class. Uses learning catalytics all through class. Tests were hard and final you have to study so much. There was some homework but you can easily google the questions for it. She goes quick through the lecture so I had to write notes before hand.
The discussion group, which is meant to aid you, actually makes the course a lot more difficult. The discussions quizzes and worksheets were on material that we hadnt even covered yet in lecture, so I was stuck trying to study what we learned in lecture while also trying to prepare for a quiz in lecture that was on material a chapter ahead.
She was a good professor. She knew her biology and her tests were pretty straightforward. However, she's not a good person. I was asking her a question on the third test and she yelled at me about knowing how to read. She has even told us she doesn't take the evaluations at the end of semester in consideration, since she knows she's a good teacher.
Forty percent of the grade is homework and some quizzes and sixty percent are tests. She's a safe bet to take. As long as you get like eighty-five percent or higher on tests you can get an A easily. Her tests aren't really hard and she drops one of the three midterms. Midterm averages are like low eighties so she's easier than most others.
Weekly homework assignments and quizzes, 3 tests, 1 final exam, mandatory weekly discussion meeting that also has quizzes, and learning catalytics in class. She is a good teacher, knows everything and teaches most things. Make sure you read the textbook and watch her online videos too. You can easily get a B or above if you put effort into learning
All biology 190 classes do Learning Catalytics questions during the lecture session which count as participation points and a way to take attendance, so you should definitely attend class. After exams, you don't get them back, but you can go into her office hours and view the tests to see what you missed.
Pravosudova is a good professor, but she can be super dry and boring at times. She does a great job of making sure students know the material through a variety of homework, discussion groups, quizzes, and LC questions. There are 4 tests including the final, one of the midterms can be dropped. She's an easy A as long as you put the needed effort in
Biology is easy. Her class is not that easy, but not that difficult either. You have to go to class everyday to participate in LC, which is 10% of your grade. I had a solid A in the beginning, but the final was the one that dropped my overall grade to a B. Unit 3 is basically the easiest and hardest test. Do well on the final, study hard for it.
Elena was a good professor. She is funny and goes into detail during lectures but it can be boring. There is a lot of stuff to do every week and there are few points for each assignment. If you do not attend lecture, then you will miss out on easy points. The LAs are definitely the best part of this class and discussion session is very helpful.
This class can be passed with an A if you put in the work. The first and third test is easy but the second one is a lot more information so it's harder. If you attend class, read the book and study every week you will pass this class just fine. The discussion/recitation are extremely helpful.
So her class was fine and all but I had an A all semester and on the final I got a C and it dropped my grade to an 88.04%. To get an A- in the class all I needed was a 88.5% so I asked if there was anything she could do and she said no. It just kinda sucks because I was so close. Thanks for that.
It was a fine class but was tough. In my opinion tests were nothing like the lectures, homework, or practice quizzes. Go to review sessions, they help and take the optional practice tests. Good grading scale this class was just tough for me. Quizzes every week. I wish there was a discussion class to help me understand the material better.
If you have to take this women for bio here at UNR I would just switch majors, shes inconsistent, learn more in the discussion class with the TA than with this professor.
Dr. Pravosudova is a great professor who really cares about her students. She gives two lectures a week and then there's a mandatory discussion led by a previous student. Overall, the class has some challenging concepts (especially exam 2), but other than that, it is very manageable and she explains things very well. She is also really approachable
This class is very difficult and she did not make it any easier. I had to retake this class with a different professor and did so much better. She is very hard to understand and is not good at explaining. It was very easy for me to zone out and the quizzes and exams were very difficult and the questions were worded difficultly.
Dr. Pravosudova is an amazing professor and it is easy to get a good grade in the class if you do the homework and study the material she tells you to study. She gives a lot of homework, but it does not take very long AND it boosts your grade since it's easy. I enjoyed this class and would take her again!
Get ready to learn material by yourself and be expected to see it on the tests without her ever covering it. Mandatory discussion groups where a TA will try and teach you stuff she never went over, that she should explain, and then be tested on it heavily. Might as well teach yourself the whole class
Dr. Pravosudova is one of the best professors I had. It is clear that she cares about her students and really wants them to pass. She does things to keep the class fun and interesting and is willing to answer any questions you have. There were about 3 weekly assignments which don't take too long to do. I highly recommend this course!
Pravosudova is a lovely woman who loves biology. She cares about her students and does her best to make the content as accessible as possible. She is very knowledgeable and provides a lot of resources to learn. Class is not mandatory, but you will miss the LC questions which are graded. Discussion group is also mandatory but very helpful!
I took this class Spring 2019 and it was a pretty good experience. She's always willing to answer questions but can seem intimidating at first. Study for the exams at least a week in advance cause the second exam is the one that kills everyone. Also, apply to be an MDG if you can. She is the most supportive and caring person if you are one.
I feel like Pravosudova's rating on here is too low. She is quirky and kind and adores biology. Biology is a tough subject, and you're gonna have to put in the effort to be successful just like any other class. Being on Zoom, I feel like she is one of the few teachers who adapted her class really well. Just pay attention and get off your phone!
I NEVER give professors bad reviews because they have their own way of teaching and I appreciate that, however Pravosudova didn't even teach. She had poor lectures posted and her outlines are terrible. She doesn't answer questions properly and I never want to have her as a prof again! For a lower division class, this was ridiculous and ill-prepared
The ratings here are too low! She gives so many resources to practice with and she explicitly states what you need to know for the exam. Literally so many resources given for practice questions or further clarification. It is a lot of work but if you keep up and pay attention to what she says, you'll be more than fine!
Pravosudova is definitely passionate about what she teaches. You have to pay attention to everything in class because it is really easy to fall behind if you aren't using all the resources she gives you. It can be overwhelming if you aren't willing to put in a lot of effort.
Was a very difficult and challenging subject but I think Dr. Pravosudova did an excellent job of explaining every concept. I would always look forward to attending her class since she always has a positive attitude and seems to really enjoy teaching. She did a great job integrating everything online. I think she should have a higher rating on here!
I highly recommend going to every one of her classes because she goes over a lot of information. Although she does kind of make us teach ourselves. She expects us to watch her posted lecture videos and take notes so we come to class prepared. During a lecture on zoom, she kind of just when over a recap of everything and moved at a fast pace.
I think she did a great time adjusting to online class for covid. Discussion sections were really helpful. The exams are on the harder side, but she gives out study guides that are pretty accurate. She also drops some grades at the end of the semester as well.
I'd say my discussion and discussion leader were way more helpful than going to the main lecture with Prof. Pravosudova. The class is well-structured but fast-paced, so you just need to make sure you are keeping up with the content. Study whenever you can! Also, she gave random extra credit at the end, which was nice. Participate!!!
Great professor, she is incredible at teaching foundational biology.
She is a good person but has to change her lecture style. I learned more outside of class with our assigned homework and readings than when I was in her class taking notes on her lecture.
Please for the love of God do not take this class, coming from an old UNR student. take this class at Truckee Meadows Community College during the summer or winter. I had an excellent experience. The class is very hard to understand, and does not set you up for success.I took four times with this professor could not grasp the concept.
Dr. Pravosudova tries to make this intro class into an upper-division class. I took her in Spring 2021, and she almost made me switch my major. Her lectures are horrible. I couldn't even grasp the material. She also assigns a lot of homework. Her exams are completely hard. The upper-division bio courses are so much easier than this class.
I didn't pay over a hundred dollars for a dollar store mic to destroy my ears in the lecture videos.
I expected this class to be extremely difficult based on other feedback, but I found that as long as you are willing to put the slightest amount of effort outside of class time, you will be just fine. Your discussion leader also makes a huge difference. Just stay on top of assignments and, if necessary, watch the virtual lectures.
Dr. Pravosudova is an okay professor. She gives you a ton of resources for you to succeed on the tests but the tests are littered with trick questions. She posts lectures online that goes over content not discussed in class. The discussions, however, go over what will most likely be on the test and they go over content clearer than Dr. Pravosudova.
She has numerous ways for students to succeed, in-person lectures, online step-by-step lectures, LA's that walk around the class that help you with questions, extra credit homework for each test, midterm, and final, a discussion, and DSM homework that doesn't penalize you for wrong answers. Plus one test score gets dropped.
She expects you to have a full understanding of everything throughout the course, but there is so much material to cover throughout the semester that it is hard to. You learn more during discussion than in her lectures. She at least offers a little bit of extra credit for each exam.
Dr. Pravosudova is a pretty good professor! Lectures can get confusing at times but she provides plenty of resources to help students be successful. Don't skip discussion, it's super helpful for understanding the harder concepts. If you do all the homework and study for tests this class will seem easy.
Great professor. She always says to read the textbook, but it's not neccesary because the online lecture videos, in-person lectures, and discussion meetings always taught exactly what you need to know. Attendance is mandatory in discussion and lecture. All the resources you need to succeed are given to you in this class.
Save yourself unnecessary anxiety and stress and do not take this professor. This is a 100 level class (though still difficult in nature) but this professor treats it like an upper level biology class. The amount of information she wants you to cram into your brain before the exams is unbelievable. She expects you to learn everything on your own.
Professor Pravosudova is so organized and made studying so much easier for me. She does Learning Catalytics every class, but you can sign on at home. The lecture videos also make in-person lectures less important to attend. Discussion section is mandatory, but its only once a week for 50 minutes, and it really helped me understand the concepts.
Overall, the class isn't that hard. But the professor gives a lot of assignments. There are separate notetakers for the lecture and the discussion as well as homework and dynamic study modules. She gives extra credit but the highest extra credit was 4 points, so it wasn't very impactful. There are also LC quizzes every lecture, so it's bad to miss.
Learning catalytics every class for attendance. Learned more during discussion than lecture. Homework is long but fairly simple. Lots of drops. 1 exam dropped. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Video lectures encouraged to watch before lecture, but I never did. Lecture can be slow, I was there more for attendance and passive learning.
She is a very nice professor when you get to know her. The class does seem like an upper division but you are set-up for success. She drops either test 1 or test 3. Provides extra credit (avg of 4 points) before each exam. Watch online videos she posts bc there's answers to all LC Q's. Make sure to study good and you'll do fine!
Really heavy lecture. A good teacher, she knows her stuff. Biology is just really hard and complex to understand. Lets you drop one test and lets you have notecards on all tests through the semester. Lots of points in the gradebook that help in the end.
Take Dr Pravosudova if you want an A. Of course the ratings are going to be bad for a professor who teaches a weed out class when everyone goes into college thinking they are going to be the next Derek Sheppard. She makes it very easy to get an A, study a little and youll do fine.
A great professor, cared about students succeeding and gave so many extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Learning catalytics and quizzes almost every class so make sure to go. As long as you put in a little bit of effort you will succeed.
You 1.)watch an online lecture and fill out a provided note outline 2.) do a Dynamic study module 3.) go to class and review material with professor 4.) do an online homework assignment covering material 5.) take a short quiz the following class. FOLLOWING THIS FORMAT IS HOW YOU SUCCEED. You do more learning away from class but the SI sessions help
The amount of homework in this class is crazy. Comprehensive exams are pretty hard. If you do well on everything and bomb the exams, you should get a B or even a low A. Scattered teaching style. You will learn more in discussion than in lecture. She is stand-offish which makes it hard to approach her. I would take Pamela Sandstrom instead.
Dr. Pravosudova uses a flipped classroom style of teaching, where you basically review the material before class, and then practice that material in class via lectures and worksheets. I think this actually works really well when you actually do it. So, ya know, DO IT! Also, discussion leader slides are VERY helpful in review for exams!
I think she was a very kind and caring professor. Sure the course had a lot of assignments, but they were very easy, and her teaching style made the material easy to remember and grasp. The discussions also really helped a ton, and she really does do a lot to make sure her students succeed. She would defiantly be happy giving extra credit as well.
Pravosudova is okay. Lots of homework but I wouldn't say it's that difficult. Lectures are a waste of time because she posts online videos that she expects you to watch before class, but you still have to go because she delivers questions during them. She provides guided note outlines and everything you need to know for the tests is on them.
she kind of utilizes a flipped classroom style. she has students watch videos and fill out note outlines to study. however, the note outlines do not correlate to the powerpoints and videos she posts. she does not provide the proper information to be totally successful.
Note outlines were super easy and if you went to the lecture you did not have to watch any extra videos to understand. She is very funny but she talks a lot and sometimes it can get redundant. The extra credit and dropping a test helps a lot!
This class provides many resources and information but is also the foundational biology class. It's a flipped-classroom style, so take notes before class from videos. Learning catalytics are graded in class. Drops an exam. Extra-credit also given. MDG helped a lot. I'd ask your MDG leader how they succeeded in class before reading all the reviews.
Dr. Pravosudova sets the expectation very early on in the class. She provides you with EXTREMELY clear outlines of the class and exactly what she expects you to learn from each chapter. She provides study guides, EC opportunities, and tons of resources. However, if you don't put in the effort, you just simply won't get the grade you want.
This professor is terrible do not take her by any means necessary. Expects students to basically teach themselves and rips through the note outlines in class. She has quizzes after her exams for the most missed test questions and it's just an excuse for people to miss more points on their grade. Her exams are also extremely hard.
Professor Pravosudova's BIO190 has a flipped-classroom style but provides plenty of resources. Attend lectures, watch videos beforehand, and use unstuckstudy for study prep. The class has a learning curve, but with effort you can earn a solid grade.
The note outlines were organized and detailed but I feel like I didn't learn much in lectures. The LA's and homework helped me understand concepts more than the actual professor. But she gave lots of extra credit and drops a handful of things
Professor Pravosudova is a nice person but she doesn't seem like she actually wants to teach. She expects to know all of the materials before the lectures and to also do the homework for the chapter before she herself has gone over it. She rushes through her lecture notes making it hard to take your own. Be prepared to learn on your own.
Good professor! Class is structured so every week you read the chapter, watch videos, take notes, and do hw before lecture. Lecture and discussion review topics and reinforce what you learn on your own. TAs and LAs are very helpful. Four exams, midterm and final are cumulative. Either one of the other two tests or the LC questions are dropped.
Pravosudova is an amazing professor, she is the perfect mix of caring and business. The Online video lectures are the backbone of the course and are really well made. Slacked off in lecture and didn't read the book but studied lectures to do well on exams. Discussions are fun depending on your leader and I found mine to be excellent!
Dr. Pravosudova is one of the most genuine professors I've met. I was initially stressed out by the expectations, but you learn how to do good on exams after the first one. Provides so much extra credit that it's harder not to fail. Go to her office hours. Even though I never paid attention in lecture, she cares so much about your success
Discussions and lectures helped. Although pacing throughout the lecture was off, I did retain and review a lot of misinformation or things I didn't understand when I read the textbook. It's almost like a flipped classroom and the professor gives a lot of resources. The written parts of the exam are usually the practice drawings, nothing unexpected
A lot of the other ratings say that the class is lecture heavy but honestly if you read the textbook it's almost one for one to her slideshows. The quality of your discussion group leader is the most important aspect! Get a good discussion group leader and you will pass!
Definitely the most structured professor I've ever had. All grading criteria and assignments are very clear from the beginning. Flipped classroom style. One discussion a week. All of the materials are there for you to succeed if you put in the effort!
She drops the lowest grades at the end and she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. You can also use a notecard on the exams. However, I felt like I didn't learn a lot in the lectures. You honestly have to teach yourself. Weekly quizzes as well.
Learning catalytic questions daily and pearson homework weekly. Quizzes are weekly and you have to show up in person for attendance. Not the best at lectures, but her class is fairly manageable, and she provides a 5x8 notecard and several extra credit opportunities for every exam. Two lowest quiz scores and one exam score dropped. Very manageable.
Exam and lecture content don't align. Everyone complains about her teaching style; she acknowledges that but doesn't change anything. Quizzes every Friday that impact ur grade if missed or if you get a bad score. At least 5 extra credit point opportunities per exam. Either too slow or too fast in lectures, no in between.
She is an amazing professor, she's VERY fair on exams, gives you all materials needed for success. Honestly, the people who did not like her didn't put the work in at home by watching online lectures before class (seriously helps so much, I knew all the content in class) and studying. It is not a hard course if you put in 30 minutes a day to study.
She was pretty good! I had her for BIOL189a, and I finished with a 91%. Mastering bio hw is really helpful for tests. Filling out the note outlines is a great way to study. I would take her again!
