Very amiable teacher and undertanding. However, you must go to class everyday, and if you cannot, then be sure to have an excuse. Speak with her in her office hours and show interest in the class. Overall easy class. She can give lots of work on short notice though.
She explains everything, and is really fair. You can talk her into almost anything if you do it in Spanish!
Very nice professor. She speaks very clear in Spanish (but not like we are little kids; she just has good pronunciation). The work was fair & she has no problem giving high grades if you deserve it. Some of the work is subjective, like presentations, but if you do it well, she will grade you accordingly. Go to class & you should have a great class.
Professor Sarmiento is an incredible teacher! She increased interest in the material. She expected a lot of the students but for a 4000 level class it was exactly as it should have been and she grades very fairly. It was taught extremely well.
Señora Sarimiento is awesome! I was definitely glad to have her for SPAN 3010. She's very helpful, moves at a comfortable pace during lecture, and she's very supportive of her students! I'm definitely going to miss this class.
Prof. Sarmiento's class was very demanding but overall everything demanded helped to improve my speaking and writing in Spanish. She challenged us, but in the end, I learned more than I have in any other Spanish class.
Professor Sarmiento is fully engaging and interested in her student's understanding of the course material. It was very well organized and I thought the course load was fair.
Everday is tense in Elena's class. She demands alot and cold calls you, and embarrasses you at times. But all of my latino friends say that my spanish has greatly improved because of it.
I feel that there were high standards and that we were expected to perform well in class. The assignments made sure that students practiced the language and improved on their speaking skills. She is an amazing teacher with great enthusiasm. Thank you for an amazing experience.
I found that this course improved my conversational skills greatly. I really enjoyed the challenges in this class and think that the workload was rigorous but useful. Profesora Saramiento was wonderful!
Professor Sarmiento is fully engaging and interested in her students' understanding of the course material. She was one of the most organized and capable teacher I have ever had. My Spanish has improved more than I expected, and the change was very noticeable.
She will challenge you and sometimes embarrass you, so expect it to be hard. But her grading is very fair. I learned more in this class than ever before and I'm much closer to fluency. The book is required and attendance is mandatory.
I felt that Sra. Sarmiento did a WONDERFUL job at helping us to learn the material. The course challenged me to learn to speak the language. Definitely one of my best courses at UGA.
This Peppy, clear, and encouraging Ecuadorian profesora wants ever student to learn the language and learn it well. She won't laugh at your answers and is quite possibly one of the kindest people. She will give you a fair b/c she's an easy grader. Stay on top of things in the class and you'll get an A. You'll have to speak to the class.
after this class I feel like my speaking skills have greatly improved. This course was demanding but at the same tie I feel that if it was easier then I would not have improved so much. My professor was absolutely amazing and I hope that I have the opportunity to work with her again.
I definitely found myself learning more spanish than before, solely because her accent was fluid and easily followed. I also felt challenged to improve my spanish. The class was very well planned and it was set up for a 3000 level class.
I miss prof. Sarmiento, because I simply can't say enough about her. She expects a lot out of her students but truly shows love to students who try their best. Senora has been my favorite professor at UGA thus far.
She is one of THE BEST professors I have ever had at UGA. Her love for the language, passion for students, and enthusiasm are VIBRANT. She expects a lot of her students, which is understandable AND achievable. She believes in the work that students can do and supports them all the way. Cannot speak MORE HIGHLY of her!! An honor to be in her class!
Señora Sarmiento is a great professor. She is demanding, and she will tell you that herself, but reasonable. She pretty much forces you to learn, but I think that's a good thing. There is online work, and it is important to her to participate in class. Her pronunciation is GREAT. I really enjoyed her as a professor. She truly wants to help.
The essays are very challenging and force you to use grammar and vocabulary from class which is good. The oral presentations and in class exercises increased my speaking ability as well. Ms. Saramiento understood everyone's level. She also teaches the material well. Overall excellent job.
Elena Sarmiento is a lovely person who really wants her students to succeed. This is not a difficult class if you do your best to participate. She is always willing to help and all the tests and quizzes are the same format so once you've taken the first one you'll have it figured out. Great class and I'd love to take her again!
She's a really nice lady that really cares about her students improving their Spanish. She can be intimidating at times and she makes you work for your grade but it's definitely possible to get an A. 3 compositions and she give them back for revision before giving a grade. Take her class if you actually want to get better you won't regret it!
Best Spanish teacher I have ever had! She is a tough cookie but she is awesome. Quizzes are pretty hard, especially the vocab. She purposely speaks slow and clear so the students actually understand her. Material is interesting, but not boring. She gives you a lot of opportunity for grades. Several short papers and a presentation at the end.
Demanding, but fair. Study online homework for the quizzes. Prepare thoroughly for your compositions. She lets you know what to expect, but you have to put in effort. Not too much vocab, but there is a good bit of homework. Dont fall behind, and make sure you understand the stories. One of the best spanish teachers I've had at UGA
Best Spanish teacher I have ever had, and I have had many. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She gives a lot of work but she is lenient on grading if you work hard and show up to class. She talks slowly so you can actually understand her, and has a very clear accent. Would recommend 100%! Wish I could take her again
Profesora Sarmiento genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I felt like my Spanish improved a lot while I was in her class, and if there were certain areas where lots of people in the class struggled, she would take time to go over them. She does give a lot of homework and online assignments, but she is an easy & fair grader.
Sra. Sarmiento was by far the best Spanish teacher I've had. She made concepts that I have learned before so much easier to understand. She is always prepared and clearly cares about her students. She created a very comfortable environment, and she strongly encouraged us to share our ideas in class. I enjoyed the variation, all very interesting.
Mrs. Sarmiento can be caring person. She does have her favorites. She can treat her non-favorites badly . Overall, she can be helpful with the material.
Ms. Sarmiento is a great choice for a Spanish professor! She truly cares for her students and I really enjoyed her class. She was always open to questions or concerns and just wants to see you succeed in the class! There is a good bit of homework but it helped me become a better student, just don't fall behind. Participation is very important.
Mrs. Sarmiento is a solid professor. I really enjoyed her class. She is clear and very, very organized. Gives feedback in every composition and the explanation of 'cuentos', authors and movies are super clear. I will definitely take another class with her.
Prof. Sarmiento was extremely effective in helping me break out of my comfort zone in order really trust myself to speak in Spanish in class. She created an environment that made me feel comfortable. I really enjoyed this class and really appreciate everything she has done in this class and wouldn't change anything!
Professor Sarmiento is a very caring professor! She really wants all of her students to be successful and leave the class having improved their Spanish skills. However, you must show up to class and make sure to pay attention during lectures!
Ms. Elena Sarmiento is very nice, reasonable and a great professor. Homework is due every class but it's helpful and not too hard or long. It's helpful for the discussions in class. There are several compositions, but all the cultural topics are relevant and interesting. I learned so much and would most definitely take another one of her classes.
I took her natives class. She is very fair in terms of grading and she is always very clear with the schedule and what is coming in the weeks ahead. This class is not an easy A if you already speak Spanish, you have to work hard. Elena is very dedicated and she cares about all of her students deeply. There are a lot of group projects and essays.
Professor Sarmiento has improved my Spanish by having many activities in and out of the classroom. I was able to become less shy with public speaking and improved my writing skills tremendously. She was very enthusiastic and made this class something I look forward to every day. She was always polite and you can tell how much she enjoys teaching.
Elena is fantastic. Super organized, no surprises. Like someone else said, there is online homework most nights, but it helps prepare you for class. Super encouraging and you can tell she cares so much about her students and wants their Spanish to improve. Highly recommend.
She is so great! I loved her -funny, engaging, helpful. Quizzes and tests were very easy. I did not put a lot of effort/time in outside of class. One big project where you have to speak in Spanish for the entire class period. I'd definitely take her again. She really wants to help improve your Spanish.
Amazing professor! I really enjoyed this class. Professor Sarmiento is extremely effective in helping break our our comfort zone. She created an environment that made us feel comfortable. Class discussions are engaging, entertaining and relevant to the students. Great professor.
Sarmiento is an awesome teacher. Very clear and organized. However, you need to work for your A.
The course was very well taught. It's not difficult, but you need to work for your A. I admire her passion to teach and organizational skills. Sarmiento did a great job speaking cleary and really cares about her students learning all the readings and vocabulary. I will definitely take her again!
I liked the discussions in the course regarding to the material taught in class. Professor Sarmiento's selected readings and films were not only informative and engaging, but were also tremendously helpful in developing my grasp on the language. Professor Sarmiento did a great job encouraging us to speak the language.
Queen. I loved taking class with Sra. She makes you work hard and participate, but she is a very good teacher and you can tell she cares very much about her students. Also has a great sense of humor. Highly recommend taking her!
I agree. Sra. Sarmiento is the best!! She is very organized and cares about her students, but you need to work for your A (which it's good- you leave the class learning how to analyze stories).
The teacher is absolutely brutal and scary. She is inconsiderate of situations or people's feelings. I've never had numerous students reach out to me after class in regards to how she treated me until this class. Also, I've never dreaded going to Spanish before. If you are in the learning stages of Spanish, she will make you insecure.
The entire class was delivered in Spanish so I was constantly learning just through listening to the professor speak along with my classmates. Every class was taught specific to a story or movie we had read which was good because class was always related to our assignments. Excellent professor!
Sarmiento is an okay professor. The tests were based on the notes in the class and readings/movies. She doesn't upload her powerpoints online, so you have to come to class. She speeds through the slides so fast, you barely have time to write down everything. She will call on you in class so be prepared. Provides little help outside of class
This teacher was so kind and understanding. I went through a very rough time at the start of the semester and she helped me get back on my feet. You have to come to class! She calls on everyone so be ready for that. Quizzes were straightforward. Always available after class for extra help. Very responsive to emails!
The course was structured and very well organized. Sarmiento was always well prepared for class and showed her passion in helping students to succeed. Her teaching developed my speaking and writing abilities the most! I definitely take another class with her.
She can be condescending or sweet, no middle. She loves to call people out for not doing well BY NAME. She read everyone the names of people who failed a quiz to tell them they failed. Rewrites? If she doesnt like you, dont expect to get any higher. She checked off every correction on mine & still did not give me but 2 higher than the original.
She is by far one of the best Spanish professors I have had so far. I would definitely recommend taking her.
Señora Sarmiento is very nice but also cares a lot about her students improving their Spanish, so she pushes students to try in class. We used the textbook but really only for online homework and classwork, not reading. In this class there is only a midterm and a final. Sarmiento is very clear about what the students will be tested on.
She challenges you to work had, but it pays off because I definitely improved a lot in Spanish through this course. Come to class and study your notes and you will make an A. Class participation and attendance is mandatory. I recommend her to everyone!
Senora Sarmiento was by far the best Spanish teacher I've had at UGA. She is always prepared and was very good at teaching this course. She taught very interesting information and make you work for your grade, but it pays off because I definitely improved a lot in Spanish through this course.
Profesora Sarmiento is by far one of the best Spanish teachers that Ive ever had. She works very hard each day to make her class interesting and engage her students in a way that allows them to form relationships, which makes the class so enjoyable. Shes hilarious, and her tests and quizzes are fairly easy if you put in work. I loved her.
Professor Sarmiento is so sweet & genuinely wants her students to succeed. The class itself may scare you a bit at first, but once you get used to only speaking in Spanish you'll be good. My speaking, writing, & reading skills have all improved immensely. She's not a harsh grader, just follow every part of her grading criteria. I recommend her! :)
I loved this class. What I liked about the course was all the different stories we got to learn and write about. It helped build confidence in my Spanish since Professor Sarmiento really challenged us to speak in the language. Profesora is an excellent instructor.
Don't believe anything these people say. She is the worst. Took her during the pandemic and she didn't care AT ALL about technical difficulties. I got a 0 because my computer failed to send in a homework that I completed. Also, a girls computer broke during the final and she made her type a Spanish essay on her phone!!
I had SPAN 3020 over the summer and honestly it was one of the best courses Ive ever taken. Professor Sarmiento did a great job. I was engaged every day to whatever the topic was for that time frame. My writing improved greatly because she gives a lot feedback in each assignment. Great class.
I had her during the pandemic, and she was so nice and understanding. You have lots of homework (but they're not hard) and like ten papers to write. She's an easy grader when it comes to the essays. She does go over the class time every day, so if you have a class after hers you better walk really fast. Must participate, or she will call you out
This class was not only informative but also engaging, It was tremendously helpful in developing my grasp on the language. Profesora Sarmiento is very organized. My writing skills with Spanish, has improved as well. I highly recommend her.
Professor Sarmiento is super sweet and just genuinely a nice person, but she can get a little old school and isn't super lenient on extensions and things of the such. However, she is super understanding of her students trying and is a very reasonable grader. She knows it can be hard, and is never going to hurt you if you're trying your best.
Prof. Sarmiento cared about her students taking something useful from the class! Lots of Connect homework per usual for Spanish at UGA. Sometimes her lectures dont clarify the homework material enough, so studying outside of class is important to be able to do well. Sometimes she can be a little blunt, but she really does want you to succeed!
Probably the least understanding teacher I have ever had. Not accommodating whatsoever and belittles you when you ask for outside help. She lectures way too quickly and also does not give you access to her slides so you have to just use the book as your only resource. Cannot wait for this class to be over.
Professor Sarmiento was truly the best Spanish teacher I've had at my time at UGA. Her class involves a lot of reading, homework, and participation which will be difficult at first (but normal for most Spanish classes at UGA) but it is so apparent that she cares about her students and wants them to be fluent in the language.
prof sarmiento is the best spanish professor I've had. she is so sweet and caring to all her students and is willing to go the extra mile to help out. the class is pretty standard (since it's based in Connect), but lectures were fun and enjoyable.
This was absolutely the worst spanish class I have ever taken. Do NOT listen to these reviews- Sarmiento is the most unaccommodating and belittling teacher. She is not willing to work with you outside of class if you need help and severely underprepared you for the final exam. I was going to minor in spanish but have decided not to after this year.
Profesora Sarmiento was incredible! One of the best spanish professors I've had at UGA. You need to study and put an effort in, but she genuinely wants you to succeed.
Prof Sarmiento is the best! Her class involves homework, reading, and participation but as long as you stay engaged in the course, you'll do well! She genuinely wants you to succeed and her class was honestly enjoyable. She's so understanding and caring, and I would definitely take her class again!
I think Profesora Sarmiento was an effective teacher and kept me engaged in the classes. She knew which subjects I struggled on, and challenged me to answer those questions. I will definitely take her again!
Prof Sarmiento was one of the best Spanish professors I have had at UGA yet! She has taught the class for many years so she really knows what she is talking about, especially because she is so passionate about the subject. The class isn't an easy A, but if you're truly looking to improve your Spanish abilities, I highly recommend taking her.
She is such a kind and caring teacher. Someone who cares that everyone learns and does well. One of the easiest classes I have ever taken and would take again.
Prof. Sarmiento was very sweet and funny but don't expect an easy A. There's daily homework and multiple assessments throughout the term. Don't miss anything online and look at practice exams. I would take her again as she improved my Spanish. The hardest part of this class was the mandatory attendance with just 3 excuses, even if you're sick.
Profesora Sarmiento is a kind, immensely qualified instructor. She cared about how I was doing inside and outside the classroom and rekindled my love of Spanish. Because of her teaching, I am minoring in the subject.
Wouldn't recommend. She is either super condescending or really sweet. She is a really tough grader, and is not helpful outside of class.I dreaded going to class, and she is very strict about attendance, regardless of the reason you're missing. She will call you out my name, and will make you feel really insecure.
I like how in class I felt like I was learning a lot through participating and practicing rather than just learning concepts and doing homework. I like the professor's style of teaching. She was very organized and I knew when everything was due and what was expected from me. Sra Sarmiento was an amazing teacher and wants the best for her students.
This course felt like 80% busy work. We worked on literary analyses and if your opinion wasn't simple, she would disagree or call on someone else. She is a caring woman but I hope her class feels higher level in the future.
Our class was later in the afternoon and we all enjoyed having the teacher. We discussed the stories the entire period and laughed a lot! The class was very organized and I have become a better writer in Spanish from this class. I would definitely recommend Ms. Sarmiento.
Professor Sarmiento was one of the best Spanish teacher I have had. While attendance is mandatory, you are allowed two absences. Class was very organized and revolved around discussions about different literary works. There are a couple in class and out of class papers as well as two exams.
Sra. Sarmiento is my favorite Spanish professor I've had! She is so sweet, her classwork is very helpful, and you speak in class often to solidify what you learn. I was nervous at first to speak up in class, but it really helps and she is very understanding of mistakes! You cover a lot of grammar in this course so be prepared for lots of review.
Elena Sarmiento is a nice person and she genuinely wants her students to do well, but she pushes you hard to get you to do the most you can do. I took it as a Maymester, so the daily workload was a lot. We had 2 partner presentations which were our midterm and final and together they counted for 35% of your grade. She expects class participation.
Elena Sarmiento is super sweet and a pretty solid professor. Her class is very interactive and relies heavily on class participation. While she's very friendly, she also wants to see growth in your Spanish skills. I would say she grades very easily, but there is frequent homework & only allows a couple of excused absences and isn't lenient there.
She is a great professor! You just need to participate heavy! She does not mind wrong answers, she actually likes when you get them wrong.
professora cares about her students but she also will be firm in her class guidelines. the homework is all online but not too difficult bc it there are multiple attempts. test and quiz layouts are always clear and she's a lenient grader. class is very interactive and is just review of the online hw and lessons. attendance does count towards grade.
Usually nice and seems to enjoy teaching. Sometimes she is passive aggressive. 2 absences before you get points deducted.
Sra. Sarmiento was an excellent professor, one of my favorite that I have had thus far. Encouraged class participation while also making all of the students comfortable. I think that there was a lot of practice in class that prepared me for the tests, the class was a very well structured one. She did a great job!
I really enjoyed Professora Sarmiento's class. She was sweet and funny. It was often a pretty positive environment to learn in and we talked about interesting topics. A lot of work in Connect, but the same amount you can expect from other Spanish classes.
I feel my Spanish writing and speaking abilities have improved a lot because this course challenged me to be able to analyze and write different stories. Profesora Sarmiento is very passionate about teaching and was always prepared. I enjoyed the information presented and highly recommend this class.
I think spanish online is harder than in person. You need to keep up with the homework and review a bit before quizzes. She is fairly generous grader as long as you try and do the assignments, which reinforced what we were learning. Quick at responding to emails and willing to help. 4 quizzes, a midterm, final. RVC's and comentarios.
She is such a sweet professor. There's a lot of homework but that's for every Spanish 2001 class. She's very generous with grading, just make sure you look at the calendar and study before each quiz and you'll do fine. Don't slack on the homeworks they're due before every class!
Lots of homework but every 2001 class has the same amount, Sra. Sarmiento is a good professor that knows Spanish. This class should be all review if you took ap spanish in highschool, less cultural learning. Some lectures can get boring tho because its all just reading off slides and asking for volunteer answers.
Sra. Sarmiento was the best Spanish teacher I have had! She cares about her students and her lectures are very informative. The quizzes are easy and she makes it very clear what will be on the quizzes and tests. Also, be ready to participate.
If another professor is available, I highly recommend it. I learned a lot from prof. sarmiento, but i felt constantly disrespected in the classroom. It was very hard to learn when passive aggressive remarks were thrown out at my classmates left and right. Attendance is mandatory and there's no flexibility. Homework on connect thats due every class.
She was just okay in my opinion. She is not the worst option but definitely not the best. My main complaint is that she does not post her power points and moves too quickly through them for you to write them down (and does not allow computers so you can't type). Can come off as rude when you are wrong which discourages students to try and speak.
I feel I was challenged to improve my Spanish with each activity in this course. The professor has a very effective teaching style and a comfortable class setting, making it easier to engage with her and the rest of the class. She also helped me a lot with my writing! I really appreciate it!
I absolutely loved this professor! I had her for SPAN 2001, 2002, and 3020 and she is the best Spanish professor I could have ever asked for! She is very caring and wants her students to succeed in the course. She gives great feedback and helps you understand if you are struggling. I am so thankful for her.
Profesora Sarmiento is great, she really cares about her students and your Spanish will really improve if you put work into this class. She demands your attention and participation but thats how you learn in this class. She is also a very easy grader and gives partial credit wherever she can. I will be taking her again in the future if I can.
Although I had her over the summer and not in-person, I cannot stress how AMAZING of a professor she is. She is always available to help and genuinely cares about her students doing well. If you want a good grade and want to learn spanish properly, take her!! I will definitely be registering for her classes in the future.
I truly enjoyed having Prof. Sarmiento as my teacher for my online course (2002e). I always knew what would be accomplished that day in class. I would love to take another class with her again!
Today was my first day, excited to be in her class. And after class she pulls me aside and is very very condescending telling me I don't know Spanish and should drop her class because I would fail.. I am a Spanish major.. she only asked me one question. She had no right, and I don't recommend her. Immediately dropped out. Unacceptable. So rude.
Her class isn't that difficult, but she is an extremely mean person who will come for your character instead of your work. I have a 4.0 GPA; I am not a bad student by any means. She is extremely condescending and apathetic towards specific demographics. Extremely unprofessional. Have to finish this course, but against my will.
She can be very rude and condescending. She was very un-organized with the mid-term and most likely will be with the final, which led to not very many people doing well. She's a tough grader on the essays according to my classmates, but I have done well on them thus far. So much homework on VHL....
Condescending, sometimes straight up rude, and very scarcely understanding; had a doctors note and still didn't get an excused absence. Oh well. Un-organized regarding the mid-term, and probably the final, which led to most of the class doing very poorly. Too much VHL homework, 3x a week. Take someone else.
Prof. Sarmiento encouraged us to participate in class. I thought the partner conversations in class helped a lot with participating. She does a great job explaining the content and teaches well. I highly recommend her.
Sra. Elena is very passive aggressive. She clearly had favorites in the class and I was unfortunately not one. When someone made a mistake in class she was very unforgiving. She never allowed space for us to learn and grow in Spanish without feeling incompetent. She doesn't post her slides from class and doesn't let you take pictures to help later.
Sra Sarmiento is knowledgeable in Spanish and supportive of her students. While she doesn't post the slides on ELC, she does a great job of explaining concepts in class and all necessary references were in the textbook on Connect. She pushes every student to participate in class and I felt it was a comfortable environment to grow from my mistakes.
I'm conflicted about this class since I feel like I had to teach myself most of the content. She doesn't post slides online and rushes through the PowerPoints in class to prioritize participation. On the positive side, she grades leniently and responds to emails quickly. If you study and keep up with Connect, you should be fine.
I'll attest to my experience. I and this other girl I met dropped the class on day one because she was SOOO condescending. A friend of mine in her other 3020 class (who is almost completely fluent) was called out ON DAY ONE and told that she wasn't cut out for Spanish (she's a senior). Took Milvet Alonso instead and don't regret it at all!!
I had her for 2002, but she CHANGED in this course. I have never had a more condescending, rude, mean professor at my time at UGA or the institution I transferred from. Some class periods I left and CRIED to my mother because of how disrespected I felt. I love spanish, pero I'm dropping my minor… I cant handle anymore of this. You ruined my life.
Prof. Sarmiento can be kind but often came across as passive-aggressive or even antagonizing when mistakes were made. I believe the reason her rating is high is because she doesn't grade very harshly. If you have a decent grasp of spanish, this class isn't hard. However, her attitude towards students makes me not want her as a professor again.
I had Dr. Sarmiento for SPAN3020 and I have never improved so much in my Spanish proficiency when taking a Spanish course. Dr. Sarmiento is a very knowledgeable and caring professor. I always felt I could ask for help and that Dr. Sarmiento believed in all of her students. If you put in the work, you will both enjoy and gain from this course.
I truly enjoyed having Prof. Sarmiento. She is a great teacher, caring and helpful. Just stay on top of the assignments. They are manageable, and study before tests. Come to class and participate.
Prof. Sarmiento is a very engaged instructor. She shows a clear interest in her students and cares about their progress in the course. She's gracious in her grading, given that you aren't blatantly applying the common errors she details at the start of the semester. This class will be difficult for students not used to speaking/writing in Spanish.
She is a great professor. Her lectures can be difficult to follow and don't fully cover the material because you answer practice questions or speak in groups but all the information needed to succeed on quizzes is in the textbook. Homework assignments are short and quizzes have a clear rubric. She grades easy on projects just be ready to speak!
Profesora Sarmiento is a great teacher who really cares about her students. The class has a good amount of work, but she's a generous grader. I found Unstuck ai helpful for prepping for quizzes and tests.
This class finishes the Connect book so that's usually the homework. Do the assignments before class because she doesn't review the concepts for long before practicing them. You don't have to be right; you just have to try. Two oral exams and two partner projects that are not hard at all just make sure you practice what you're going to say.
I truly enjoyed having Professor Sarmiento. She is very passionate about teaching and it is great to see that. She was knowledgeable, kept the class engaging and encouraged participation.
Sarmiento was great. She really cares about her students and the language in general and always comes to class in the cutest outfit. Definitely a lot of homework on connect, but nothing insane. She did say some questionable things while teaching and the grading criteria for projects wasn't the clearest. But, I would take her again if I could.
I loved Professora Sarmiento! Very discussion heavy. Participation is really big for her (it helps you to prepare for the upcoming class-afterwards you write essays). Just do all the assignments ahead of time. As long as you put in effort to answer questions and add to discussions you should be fine. Class was fun and interesting stories discussed.
Very kind, but definitely expects students to demonstrate high-level Spanish when speaking. VHL textbook is expensive, lots of hw = 16% of grade, only one try on every question. Lots of short readings + some films. Lots of essays and reflections, vocab, history. Doesn't post PowerPoints online. No tech in class, except to do VHL/essays. Gave candy!
Had her for 2002 and now 3020 and she's great. There's a lot of work and midterm and final are hard but put in the effort, show up, and participate. She knows who is putting in the effort in and out of class and will reward that. My Spanish has improved a ton with her in both classes and I would take her again if I could.
I don't dislike her but this class is so difficult and is really making me dread finishing my Spanish minor. Lots of in-class essays that are graded pretty hard and have a bunch of different components to incorporate. Lectures are basically just like middle school ELA but in Spanish which isn't too bad, but participation is really important.
My Spanish has improved tremendously taking this class! She has a perfect speaking cadence and a very clear accent. She is a very generous grader, super caring, and very funny. You cannot pass this class without putting in effort, and the homework can be a little annoying sometimes, but I think that she is an excellent professor!!
She is very sweet but I did not like this class. Her lectures don't make much sense and she is constantly changing the assignments and grading criteria. She gets frustrated when people do not participate (even though they are scared to because she will correct them in front of everyone) and will call on people randomly.
She's strict because she cares. As long as you're willing to participate and put in the effort, you'll succeed. She is compassionate, sweet, a VERY thorough teacher, and you get lots of practice in class. It's a small class too, so if you build a relationship with her, then the class will be very enjoyable!!
She's passionate at her subject. Excellent teacher. Go to class, do your homework. Her lectures are very well prepared, entertaining and interesting. Different activities in class.
SPAN 2002 is hard, imo. She is fine and a very easy grader. She is a bit disorganized at times and class sometimes feels pointless since it is a flipped model. Still, she is very easy grader which I like. Mandatory attendance. Not a lot of work outside class. One paper, two oral exams, and connect assignments, a few projects.
Great Professor! Class was sometimes boring but she is a very good teacher. Lots of Connect assignments, but only a few other assignments/exams. Quizzes are very easy if you study the vocab and the speakings are easy as well.
Had a great time with Profesora. Organized and follows every word of her syllabus. Better than other flipped classrooms because still teaches everything during class time. Sets you up for success on exams with the work and practice tests she posts. Easily accessible for help. She gives above and beyond the number of tools for needed for success.
She's a great lecturer and very entertaining to listen to, but if you have a weak immune system or tend to be absent often, I would NOT recommend her class. She is very strict on absences and I don't think she's particularly tech-savvy because she can be hard to reach/communicate with online and her ELC is a bit hard to navigate.
It was a good class. She follows the syllabus and is a sweet lady. There are a lot of Connect assignments, but the tests are easy if you study. Be prepared for group projects and to talk only in Spanish. Participation is a must, especially bc of the small class size and mandatory attendance.
I took Prof. Sarmiento's class for 2002 and 3020. I really enjoyed both classes, and she cares a lot about helping students get the most they can out of the material. Communicates expectations clearly. Put in the effort to participate in class and you'll do great!
Great teacher
This course challenged me in a good way, and my writing and speaking skills increased more than any other class I've taken before. Homework is completed before every class, and you must participate in every class. Profe Sarmiento provided many techniques to ensure that we learned the content fully. I'd love to take another Spanish class with her!
She was amazing! This class was a difficult transition for me but she was very helpful anytime I needed. It's a lot more speaking and listening than 2001 no matter who the professor is, I would love to take her again!
Best Spanish professor ever. She is so caring and just wants everyone to do well in the class. She will be lenient with grading if she can tell you're trying. A lot of connect assignments, but no different than any other Spanish class. Sweetest lady ever, I will miss her every day.
Professor Sarmiento was very engaging in class, but requirements on the in-class essays weren't really clear, and there was a ton of homework. That might've just been 3020, though. However, I'd take again!
