Shes a pain in phys chem labs. arrogant, intimidating, and condescending. judges!
best chemistry prof there
Very willing to help students understand both in and out of class.

AWESOME PROF, she goes out of her to help students, many sample problems
Her notes are gold. She wants you to learn. Answers to asgmnt are given in class
Awsome teacher, very nice, made chem barable
Was the best prof I have ever had and will ever have!
Super nice and helpful. Her notes are all you need for an A in this course.
She is my favourite prof! She has gone out of her way to help me!
almost like Isadora Duncan in chemistry!
agreed about phys chem...tough. but still really nice and adorable
Knows her stuff, but tough prof. Can be very condescending. Can be quite bossy.
She is one of the best professors in the world. Very kind person, willing to help students any time with any chemistry-related problem. Presents her lectures with humor in very clear and understanding way. I can recommend Dr.Smirnova to all my friends.
In her class you will understand chemistry even if you hate it. Very helpful prof.
Dr. Smirnova is a fantastic prof. She is more than willing to help any student reach their full potential. Her explanations are clear and precise, and her approach to topics with humour is an added bonus. I would recommend anyone to take Chemisty with her
Her notes are gold. She is the most helpful prof i have ever met. She made chemistry very bearable. Very cute I would give her an A++
Smirnova is great!! She does all that she can to help her students do well, even staying at university from 8:30am to 7:00pm giving extra help. She gives easy explanations for a hard subject, plus she has a sense of humour.
AWESOME PROFESSOR!
She is great. Very very helpful. Alvays available for help. Great job Dr.Smirnova.:)
She is one of the best profs you can get. You will never by sorry if you take her course. She is great.
AWESOME prof. she was only teaching the develpmental seciton this term and i couldn't get into it because of a conflict, so i sit in on it 4 out of the 5 days. she is the absolute best.
Awesome professor, there is no way she would let you fail the course if you didn't want to. Prof more concerned about the students than ever seen before. If only everyone could be like her....
sexy accent
best prof. I've had all year!
Dr. Smirnova is one of the best teachers that I have ever had, she will help you with any problems that you have, works really hard to make sure that you understand, If you have a chance take a class with her you won't be disapointed..
awesome teacher
Just start taking her class...about a week but i can say that she's really helpful..cares for her students...best professor...and a nice lady.
best prof ever
OH MY GOD SHE IS AWESOME!
Very nice lady but labs are so disorganized that the students have to see her all the time to figure out the lab. The lab is what makes this course hard!
Best teacher I have ever had and probably will EVER have. Very sweet, very caring, very helpful. Not at all intimidating. Extremely knowledgable! Knows how to teach.
This teacher is really extremely good. If you have the option of having her, choose her without a doubt. Any choice besides that of taking her class is mindless and you'll regret it.
She's pretty helpful but doesn't really challenge u, instead she'll just give u the answer without explaining. Other than that she is a pretty good prof, wants u to pass...
How can you not love her? She goes above and beyond the call of duty to help every single one of her students. Very caring, very helpful!
she's great! no complaints, she's always willing to help. teaching style is awesome, too bad all profs couldn't be like her
You'd be hard-pressed to find a better prof. She's the best one I've ever had. She'll answer any question whatsoever and will remain patient if you don't understand.
Great lady
Amzaing techer very helpful and understanding. she will help with any qestion. Very involed to make sure evry one dose well. Great teacher.
OMG she is the BEST chem teacher that i have EVER had!!!...she gives handouts so u dont really have to take notes..chem wasnt one of my strong subjects but i got a B+ in the 002.130 course and it was all because of her! AWESOME TEACHER!!!!!
I LOVE THIS LADY. she has to be my favorite prof so far @ UM. She cares soo much about how u do, always giving up her time to help. Very approchable, awesome teaching style, clear, helpful, makes chemistry EASY ..sweet old russian lady. TAKE HER CLASS U WONT REGRET.
I can't put into words how well this professor teachers. Extremly dedicated to students. You can't go wrong by getting her. In fact, register for her section at all costs. She's the Micheal Jordan of chemistry professors!
excellent professor. has won awards for her amazing teaching abilities.
She is an awesome teacher. She loves the students and is really dedicated to them. All the notes she gives you and the only writing you have to do examples. She is GREAT!!!
Just an Amazing Prof, i hated chem before and i can't get enough of it now
If your not good at chem and need to do well, this is the class for you.
DR.SMIRNOVA IS MY HERO!
The best prof I ever had in university till now and will always be. She is very approcable and is happy to help you all the time. Take this prof to get an A in chem even if you dont like chem.
Best prof by far. She will bend over backwards to help students. More office hours then anybody. Explains everything well. Sweetest and funniest lady. Take her if you can!!
when she takes the iniciative to learn the students names, it tells you a lot about the professor. all comments are true. EXCELLENT professor. although at times she can be very upity about certain things.
Thank you, you are the greathest prof. this god damn university ever had !!!
A really good teacher, she cares abot you much. In her tutors, she gives clues about exam questions. If you are having problems with chemistry, you should take her class!
Prof. Smirnova is an excellent professor. She cares about her students and wants them all to succeed. If there is a student that is always failing, she will take the initiative to meet with that student. She has a bit of an accent, but is very, very understandable and clear.
She is the best prof. university has in any subject field what so ever. Her notes and handouts are just awesome fo through them and everything will work for you.
She is very good. All her notes are detailed and easy to understand and she tries to make sure that you understand them.
She is THE BEST prof. in the whole university, just attend her lectures and you're sure to above average marks. She is very helpful and she is also interested in every single student in her class to do good. Awesome!!!
Excellent Prof! She was so genuinely interested in making sure that you understood the material. The notes she used were the core of what I used to study the course. I felt very confident with the subject after I was finished the course. It's a shame she couldn't teach the higher level courses of Chemistry.
she's the greatest prof i ever had. so caring and helpful
awesome teacher!
Honestly you cannot ask for any better prof. She is the most warming and caring person ever!!!! You will never ever regret that choose her. Extra help? She loves giving extra help. Easy class only if take it with her
She's Excellent!! Makes jokes too!!
Professor Smirnova is an amazing professor. She is kind and goes completely out of her way to help her students. Nothing makes her happier than seeing her students succeed. She is extremely passionate about her work and again, is always willing to help her students. It was a pleasure to be in her class. I wish she taught all my courses!
Attendance is not mandatory, but it helps a lot if you go to class. She is an awesome prof, and she actually cares.
good prof
Had her years ago, but for hating uni and not a fan of chem, I got an A and it was all because of her. Helpful in and out of class almost every day. She really cares and wants all of her students to do well, so if you do your best, she'll do her best for you. Wish she could teach everything.
I took this course one years ago. Now I am in my second year, but I miss her so much, because she is the best so far in my Post Secondary education. She can call out everybody's name in the 200 student seated lecture. She cares, loves and really teaches you. I am going to take her Analytical Chemistry in my third year. Best!
extremely helpful to the point of giving answers away.
Very helpful!
This teacher is one of the most helpful I ever had in university. If she teaches your class, make sure you get her as instructor. She basically goes out of her way to make sure everyone passes. If you don't its because you're not trying at all. I barely studied for the tests or exams and got an A
a really good one!
She is such a lovley woman, the most helpfull that you can possibly find, havd a really good notes that always poted online. Knows every ones name, even though she has so many students! the best that you can ask for
She makes a lot of mistakes during her lectures. This brought much frustration when I was in lecture. I wanted to shout out "guys!! what she'd just said is wrong!!!" but I didn't... because at the end of the day, I don't care if my fellow classmates get A+ or not.. But she really is a very helpful professor, I admit.
Really Great Professor. Makes sure you understand what you need to know.
Best proff I have ever had.
I took her class last fall. I visited her office hours to ask her a few questions. She was genuinely interested in helping me. You can just see her in her eyes that she wants to help you. She is like a mother Teresa. I am taking her course next year too. Simply because I wish to learn. I love her. In a safe way.
Took her class after reading all the good comments on this site, decided to switch out and register for a different section with a different prof. Has powerpoint slides that are up to 80 slides long and flys through them. Maybe this was due to her slides being from the developmental section she had taught the year before.
she is the most caring prof!
Dr. Smirnova she is the best proff ever whenever students have a questions she is always willing to help to anyone who needs her help. She is the best proff Bravo
I don't think I'll get a prof like her again that really cares about how well you do in the course. Material is easy if you keep up on it but be prepared for the labs since they are a lot of work. Overall an excellent professor.
Of all the professors I've had, Dr. Smirnova is the best teacher. She puts her heart and soul into her work.
great teacher, very helpful outside of class. very caring
Dr. Smirnova is definitely the best teacher that u of m has. She must be the only teacher that actually wants to see all her students ace the class. Labs are time-consuming and hard, but she constantly provides extra lab time. If you need ANY chem class, take analytical chem with her. you will NOT regret it.
Amazing prof, extremely helpful, allows for extra lab time (needed for some labs), allows for labs to be redone for higher marks in the extra time, explains things extremely well, makes it very easy to approach her and discuss anything you are not understanding. Willing to go the extra step for her students
Very nice prof. Extremely helpful and caring. Not very challenging.
Dr. Smirnova is a very good professor. She said at the start of the year that all she wants is for all of her students to do well. She is VERY nice and ALWAYS available for extra help. Her class is straightforward and her points are clear. I would definitely recommend taking chem with her.
funny, links different things that are off-topic in order to help us understand
One of the best profs I've had. Is very helpful, keeps material organized, and really focuses on important things for the exam.
Absolute sweetheart! She's very helpful outside of class and cares very much for her students! Her office hours allow for extra time with her teaching more difficult concepts and were helpful! Notes were clear, and she explained them all well! Definitely get her if you can!!
Amazing prof, great sense of humour. Truly wants her students to do well. Our class average on the midterm was 10% higher than the average of all the classes.
Elena is an amazing professor. She is very knowledgable and helpful outside of class. She really cares about her students and holds extra tutorials for students to be successful. She has lots of office hours and does many practice and review questions in class to prepare you for the exam. I would definitely recommend her.
Most helpful prof you will ever have
She good.
Dr. Smirnova is an excellent prof with a strong interest in her students. One of my favourite profs at the university.
Excellent professor. She is very fast at responding to emails and cares about every student.
Incredibly awesome professor! Very approachable. Exams are quite easy actually, you just need to listen. This I think is one of the courses where the labs and course materials really tie together.
Best professor ever. She is one in a million <3
Thick accent that makes it a pain to understand. To do well you have to be able to get extra help in her office. All learning happened while completing assignments. However, the exam is quite easy.
Lovely lady, who is admirable to listen to. I found her lectures to be very unhelpful though, since she talked about a lot of stuff that was irrelevant to what we are tested on. She also moves at a very slow pace and she gets in trouble for it frequently.
Very good prof, make sure you get her for CHEM 1300, the other profs don't even compare, she is super helpful and cares about her students as if they were her kids, do not miss the chance to have her, her notes are super detailed, and she has tutorials where she does actual questions that will pop up on the exams, BEST PROFESSOR AT THE U of M
She's very funny and if you go for help individually she is very nice and helpful. Her lectures were very boring and the slides had so much info on them it was impossible to take notes and pay attention in class.
Professor Smirnova is an AMAZING lecturer! She is extremely approachable and is always eager to answer your questions. She is hilarious during her lectures, and her bi-weekly tutorials got me through midterms and finals. Her lectures have a lot of excess information though, but the main ideas are still present. Textbook VERY useful :D
Greatest prof in terms of passion and going above and beyond. Help is available ANYTIME. Adds humour and side/personal stories to keep subject fresh. A good mark is guaranteed if some time is put in, as she reviews constantly in class/assignments.
Awesome prof, really cares about her students! Makes the class way easier than it is with some of the other chemistry prof. Definitely would recommend her for 1st year students!
She's awesome! she's cute and funny and genuinely cares about her students. She replies to emails quickly too and holds extra review sessions for students who need the help. Loved her class!
Amazing prof! Goes above and beyond for her students. She constantly encourages students to attend her office hours where she will sit and do extra practice questions with you.. Take advantage of this! Clear explanations and notes. She truly cares about her students and wants to see them to well. Take with her if you get the chance!!
Honestly, Dr. Smirnova is super nice, and has the best lab that I've experienced, but I can't understand anything in her class, and I found most of what she talks about isn't practical for what will be tested. The course would have been far better if she taught from the perspective of problem-solving instead of having all the excess notes
agree with person below. Shes super nice and super helpful in labs and the labs are actually fun.. but class is all over the place. Goes through like 30 slides a class super fast.Exams was kind of random- all problem solving pretty much. I honestly think shes one of the nicest profs, but if your taking this class thinking its easy.. reconsider it
THE BEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD! Takes a genuine interest in students and is so so kind and helpful in and out of class!
She is very nice and wants everyone to do well; unfortunately, her lecture slides I found were confusing, and made simpler topics convoluted and confusing (her excessive use of super/subscripts especially), while not elaborating enough on new, more complex topics. The lab requires a lot of work but everyone found it went better than we feared.
professor Elena Smirnova is the best prof at the university of Manitoba because she is very welcoming to students
Most helpful and caring prof I've ever had at the university. Truly cares about her students. Went through the midterms with each of us individually to see where we had gone wrong. Easy class, and can't say enough good things about her. Lectures are boring as hell though
Poor professional quality
Very passionate about the success of her students! she have review sessions for midterm and finals; notes can be over the place and not necessary. she has an accent but always be in class and youll get used to it. overall, such a sweet person and youll never regret taking the course with her!
Amazing prof, I always recommend Dr. Smirnova. She really cares about her students, class average was always higher than the rest. Answered emails quickly and thoroughly. I would suggest attending her evening study sessions, very helpful.
Strong accent
Course material should be straightforward. Unfortunately, the notes are more confusing than helpful.
boring lectures and the slides are too much to understand
Easy to understand accent. Notes are longer, but are clear and has lots of examples. Gives great exam practice questions, funny, usually clear explanations in class but sometimes drags on a topic for too long. Must be there on take home iclicker marking day. if confused ask for help, she replies fast and gives good explanations.
Best prof alive, caring, kind and definitely knows her stuff. accent tho, but you'll get over it! ;)
Smirnova is a wonderful prof. She uses props and videos in order to get her points across. If you read the textbook you'll have no trouble understanding anything she says. She's also hilarious and tells jokes. If you take her class, prepare for a few pictures of her dogs, because they're her life's pride and joy. Best prof by far.
Tough course with super boring lab......
Best chem prof ever!
Dr. Smirmova is by far my favourite first year prof. She is the most helpful and passionate teacher I have ever had and without having her as my prof for chem 1300 I don't think I would have done as well as I did. Dr. Smirnova goes up and beyond for her students and if I could have her for the rest of my chemistry courses at U of M I would.
This prof was alright in the sense that she had her students best interests in mind however I found her accent very distracting and half the time I could barely understand her. Study hard, go to class (there are lots of clickers) and try to ace the assignments.
Dr. Smirnova was an awesome prof. An accent is a fact of life, and you get used to it after being in lecture for 5 minutes. She made it very clear that we could go to her for help at any time. Don't skip - you miss out on easy iclicker marks, and her notes online are far from complete. Write down what she says, not whats on the powerpoint.
Dr. Smirnova is amazing. This past semester was my 2nd time taking Chem 1300 and having her as my prof made the world of difference. Regardless of her accent she speaks very clearly and is extremely good at explaining everything. She is so nice and caring and unlike many professors at the U of M. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
As a first year student you will not regret having her as a prof. She is incredibly nice and she tries really hard to make sure her students understands. Take every opportunity to go to evening review sessions because they are worth it. The course itself can be a bit tricky at times, but Smirnova has the highest class averages for a reason.
One of the best profs I've had, definitely cares about her students. Notes can get confusing but she explains it very well. She holds tutorials on a voluntary basis to help students. Office hours can get busy but she replies to emails with good explanations. She has an accent but it isn't a barrier. You can tell she genuinely loves teaching
She is the embodiment of the word fierce. But she's somehow also very caring and really wants her students to do well, and is very approachable. Does extra tutorials on her own time. Be prepared to put tons of work in for your mark though!
she is a nice , loving, caring professor
she is so caring
Best professor I have had at the u of m, by far.
Lectures are dry although she tries to keep students attention. She genuinely cares and often hosts extra tutorials on her own time later in the day (5:30).
Her lectures were very unhelpful, she skipped through lots of her slides and didn't explain things in great detail. For the most part, I consulted the textbook bc I got nothing out of the classes. Still went to class for the iClicker questions, there are lots of those. She genuinely seemed to want her students to do well though.
By far the best professor I had through my career in university (168 credit hours done at this point). Always there for you, always willing to help her students! Remembers each and every student by name which is unbelievable for a first year university professor. Won several Canadian awards for teaching excellence for a reason! Best Prof Ever!
Do yourself a favour and take a class with her.
She really cares about how you do in the course and is available for extra help. Chemistry isn't fun but if you apply yourself you will be fine.
She's the kindest prof in uofm ever. At least as far as I've taken. She is very willing to help and would try her best to make you understand the complicated topics. Very enthusiastic and give clues as to whats on the exam.
Very caring and very very kind. Willing to help you on anything you have trouble with. Her classes are thorough Need to go to class to learn a lot. She has her humour. I'd suggest going to the after class sessions as it helped me a lot. Take her class.
She is a really sweet prof and cares about her students and she's funny too. But her lecture notes are all slides and she gives no time to write stuff down. Plus a lot of info is useless on her slides so you have to study on your own. difficult course if you don't study
Her accent is EXTREMELY hard to understand. She tries to be engaging in class but the language barrier really makes things difficult. Also, if you don't read the textbook like it's your life source, don't expect to understand what's going on during the lectures.
Love her as a person, hate her class
Dr. Smirnova is a wonderful Professor and person. She has amazing lectures but make sure to sit at the front. If you want to do well in the course do all the homework she gives you. Go to her extra tutorials since she will go over possible questions on the exam. She is an amazing person and I would definitely recommend her for any chem class!
Great prof. Overall one of the best profs i have ever had. Really cared about how well her students did on exams and labs. Always willing to help in and out of class. Although lectures could get a little dry here and there she helped by making jokes and making you feel relaxed. Class is pretty much mandatory although she does post her lecture notes
She is an amazing professor! She plans her lectures very carefully, and she puts a lot of time and effort into delivering the best lectures she can so that her students can succeed. She will definitely help you if you go outside of class to see her if you're struggling. One of the best profs at U of M!
Amazing prof! She taught two sections this term and both of them got the highest averages on the midterm. Engaging, funny and passionate about chemistry! You will not be disappointed if you take chemistry with Dr. Smirnova. Overall, a great prof that made the transition from high school chemistry to university chemistry much easier!
Most people regard Smirnova as the best professor for CHEM 1300. She does her best to have available office hours and holds extra (optional) tutorial sessions that help go through practice problems. Lectures can be entertaining and she has a good sense of humour. She owns at least two dogs and is very Russian.
Great proff! She gives lots of take home quizzes but they will help you a lot on the exam!! I studied only her notes and got an A in the course! She also provides tutorials and if you go to her office hours she will explain any question or concept very clearly
Dr. Smirnova can be difficult to understand during lectures because the material is difficult. She has more office hours than anyone else, and this is because she wants you to do very well in the course and is always there when you look for help. This course is hard, and Dr. Smirnova will help you through it.
She actually cares about your success. Her notes are detailed enough so you don't need a textbook get an over a B+.
Could tell that she wants her students to succeed. Always made time for students; was very helpful answering questions. Such a sweet, dedicated professor- my favorite prof by far.
Clear explanation, always more than happy to help you!!! Loved her classes too!
An amazing woman, kind and sweet! Has an accent but it does not get in the way of understanding her. She is brilliant and truly wants her students to succeed! I would take a class with her in a heartbeat!
She is amazing!!!
She gives very clear explanations on the concepts, and don't be afraid to go to her office hours and ask questions--she's super helpful!
She's one of the professors that loves to teach. Due to a time constraint you could not ask questions during the lecture. However you can ask questions before, after or during office hours and she'll give you meaningful answers. I personally am not great at chemistry and she's the reason why I did extremely well in this course.
Dr. Smirnova really cares about how her students do in her class. Chem 1300 is a tough course but she holds lots of office hours and they are really helpful if you go.
One of the best profs at university. Her lectures were very clear, and she was extremely helpful towards students.
Amazing amazing amazing prof! Seriously best at U of M, genuinely cares about you and your grade, will do anything to help you. Take this class with her
Taking CHEM 1300 with her, you could immediately tell that she is passionate about the course. She is there when you need her, her lectures are quite fast, but only because she has a lot to cover. She gives iclicker questions, so you have to go to class. she is the best prof for this course. I would take it with her again in a heart beat.
I love her so much. She is very helpful, friendly and reply your email as soon as she could. I usually went to her office when I got trouble with exercises or lessons and received clear explanation . She always encouraged you to try more to have good grades and took care students by organized the tutorials.
Dr Smirnova explains concepts really clearly, she holds extra office hours and tutorials for students to ask questions and to explain some hard concepts. If u don't have trouble with her accent, her lectures are really helpful and fun
She truly cares about each and every student!! Despite the class being 200+ students, she tried her best to make sure everyone would at least pass. She offered tons of office hours and was all around a fantastic prof.
Fantastic, her slides are posted and very clear with enough diagrams, she happily answers questions during class, and if you go see her, she will not forget your name! Will hold extra tutorials and help sessions because she cares so much that her students pass! Her sections also consistently do better on the exams as a result.
She is one of the best chemistry profs. She provides help to students who need it in her after class tutorials. I would definitely recommenced her.
shes very passionate about chem and makes you love chem a lot !
Good lectures though most of it is just reading off the powerpoint slides. But often enough she takes additional time to visually explain tougher concepts using animations or props.
She's a very caring prof, happy to help and easy to understand!
This was by far the hardest course I've ever taken in university. This professor cares about their students. There are a lot of notes and homework so you need to keep up. Although this course was difficult I was thankful to have taken the section with this professor.
Her lectures are insightful, she offers a lot of practice questions and is always willing to help students outside of class. She really cares about her students. She does cover a lot of content in her lectures, but she provides the slides ahead of time so students a read over them before class. Overall, she is a wonderful professor.
She's very likable and hilarious professor. She does tutorials even though she doesn't have to which shows that she really cares about her students. She wants her students to succeed. She's very easy to reach out if you ever need help.
She has made a lot of hours outside of class available for extra help and she really seems to care about each student passing and understanding chemistry.
She was amazing, so sweet and really cares about her students. Her lectures were enjoyable and she was really helpful and clear in her explanations, I felt really prepared for the exams at all times. Her notes (which she also provides online) are really easy to follow and use while studying. Paired with an SI group if needed, this class is a breeze
Dr. Smirnova is an incredible professor. She genuinely cares about all of her students, and wants everyone to succeed. She is always available and willing to help students outside of class, and explains concepts very clearly. She gives homework assignments that are very helpful, and as long as you are willing to put in effort, you will do well.
Dr. Smirnova is an amazing professor. Her notes are very descriptive, however I never really had to read the textbook because of that. She genuinely cares about all of her students and their success. Also, she gives practice assignments that are very helpful (often harder than the exam questions).
In my opinion Smirnova is the best prof in U of M. She is caring. She loves her students and has great patience. Her practice sets were a big help to get ready for the final. I believe it is important to have a good foundation in chemistry, and this starts with Smirnova. She has a way. Great respect and only good wishes to her 3
Her accent can be a little difficult to understand at times, but it's nothing major. She's very good at explaining concepts and is funny. Solid choice for CHEM 1300
Seriously the best Chem 1300 prof! She presents the material clearly and simplifies it so it's easy to understand. She hosts extra tutorials ON HER OWN TIME and will help you if you need it. She wants you to succeed in her class. Buy her stoichiometry book from the bookstore, it is a life saver. I wish she taught 1310.
BEST Chem lecturer hands down. She has great notes as well. You can really tell that she puts effort into her lectures. She also hosts extra classes that are optional but you should def go because you learn alot. She really cares about her students passing and is big on in class participation because she really wants to know that you're understandi
Excellent prof. I dropped the class because I had a last minute change of heart regarding my major, but the lecture portion is not difficult (I had an A+ when I dropped). She is very clear about what you need to learn, and her lectures are engaging with jokes sprinkled throughout. Highly recommend. Her lecture slides are very thorough, too.
Smirnova was a very sweet prof. She really wanted her students to do well. However, the course itself was ridiculous. The exam was worth 65% of the grade (absolutely insane). Labs were stressful because they didn't give you enough time. Overall you need to do the practice questions and keep up to understand what's going on during lecture.
Smirnova is a great prof. You can tell that she truly cares about her students success in the course. She offers lots of extra help through helpful extra help sessions along with her extremely helpful extra practice worksheets.
By far the best prof Ive had at the U of M! If taking chem 1300 take it with her. She genuinely cares about individual students & encourages them to seek help . Very friendly and enhances lectures with humour. Often prepares useful problem sets & volunteers her time for 6 sessions of extra help in the evenings, the other profs dont do this.
Dr. Smirnova was very helpful and caring towards students. She gave lots of practice questions and made students feel welcome in coming for help outside of class. Despite this, the course was extremely hard and some of the subject material was such that even she agreed they shouldn't be teaching in a basic chem course. (The department decides that)
Dr. Smirnova is a real Gem! She was so caring towards every single one of her students and would explain you things over and over if you still did not get it. If you don't understand something go to her office as often as you need to and try to understand things as you go, don't wait until the end! Go to her lectures even if you're not in her class
hard to understand just because of her accent so you have to listen very hard. gives good practice problems but it sucks because she doesn't post them online, you have to take pictures of them from your phone during lecture so its unorganized. she's funny. If I had to, I would take her class again though.
Chem 1300 is definetly a hard class, but make sure you choose Elena! I believe shes the only prof to give practice problems to ensure you understand the course material, as well as tutorials for each session. She goes above and beyond for her students.
Dr Smirnova was my favourite first year prof. She was flexible for help, and knew her stuff. She didnt over complicate things and truly cared about her students.
Lectures felt rushed at times.
Dr. Smirnova is easily my fav first year prof. She cares about her students and would go miles beyond what is needed just to help them pass. She would volunteer some of her evenings for tutorials just to go over questions for the units she covers. She explains everything clearly and is very funny at times. Recommend her 10/10. Great prof indeed!!!
She's a national treasure. Whatever the administration pays her is not enough. She genuinely loves her students and lives to see the smile of a well earned grade. She puts on extra evening tutorials, has generous office hours and posts extremely useful practice material. She's what I wish every prof on campus could be. Sad to say goodbye at the end
She's probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. I had a little trouble understanding her accent but her personality was totally worth staying in her class for. She's very approachable and offers extra office hours during finals season. She also gives extra practice problems to help you understand the materials better
She has a few quirks that make me not like her lectures, but she is a chemistry GOD. Her lecture slides are absolutely incredible so, it's okay if you have to miss a class. She goes through the slides fast, but if you review them they have the entire explanation she gave. She has extra help sessions and increases office hours near final.
Good lectures that usually help you understand well.
Her accent can be extremely hard to understand in class, especially when she is speaking really fast. Her notes are hard to follow and often bounce around. She definitely cares about what she is teaching and wants others to share her love for chemistry.
Took course in fall 2017. Very smart lady, has a pretty great sense of humour. Sapling assignments had little to do with course and the site did not mark fairly - it was very hard to get grade changed. Her lecture slides were chuck full of words but told me absolutely nothing. The exam was worth 60% and the MC questions were not fair. Labs sucked
She is super nice and super caring. Her accent can be a bit hard to follow. Honestly, her notes are super confusing and messy. Most of the class is her reading off the slides. Overall, the content is difficult, and even though she is very nice, 90% of learning for me had to be on my own, I didn't really get much from going to class.
Hard to follow in lecture, notes bounce around a lot and goes very fast. Explanations weren't very clear. I ended up teaching myself by reading the textbook (which is only online by the way).
Really funny prof, but her accent is hard to understand and be ready to study. The labs also suck and are very stressful. The exam is nothing like what you learn in class, it is more so based on grade 12 stuff that you never actually learned. Only take this course if you have to. As for the prof she is okay and very intelligent and accessible.
Smirnova is very approachable and wants her students to succeed. She takes time out of her schedule to prepare help sessions and meet with students. Her lectures are boring however informative. The exam is very difficult, use the textbook to study and prepare!
Smirnova is an absolute sweetheart and a really great prof, but that doesn't change the fact that this course is just terrible. I got straight A's on all assignments, labs, and tests. But then the exam comes along and just completely screws you over. The questions are like nothing you've ever seen before. It was the worst thing I've ever done.
Smirnova is very helpful and thorough in her lectures. She tries to prepare you for the final and goes through old exam questions in class. The exam was still horrible and all of us were surprised by the material on it. She adds humour into her lectures and tries to demonstrates the material when possible.
Lets start off by saying that chem is EXTREMELY hard but she is a chemistry GOD. She is such a nice, caring person. She has so many help sessions and always has good office hours. Please don't skip class, lectures are heavy! She reads off the slides a lot but it's ok since there is so much on them. The course was very tough but she is amazing!
Amazing prof!! I definitely recommend, chem 1300 is a very challenging first year course and she tries to help in any way for her students to succeed. Her lecture notes are amazing, she is very easy to get in touch with outside of class. Attend SI sessions if you can and read the textbook, it is helpful along with doing a lot of practice questions.
Online Lecture Notes are very helpful. Office hours also very helpful. Lectures, however, are not very engaging and I found myself falling asleep often in her class. Her accent was relatively easy to understand. Overall, if you really apply yourself outside of class, Smirnova gives you the tools you need to succeed. Very hard material though.
Amazing Prof who really cares about her students. Will always be free for students seeking extra help especially near exams. always gives very good feedback when asked questions relevant to the course material. Lectures were always good and her online notes really helped.
Amazing professor, really cares about her students, takes extra time outside of lecture hours to do example reviews not the best at explaining the concepts but its the math thats the hard part.
Teaching way is good
She goes out of her way to give extra lectures before tests and exams. She tries to be available and have as much office hours open to students as possible. I really appreciated her going above and beyond in this way.
She is a really great professor! She can get strict at most times solely because she wants her students to really pay attention to what she is saying because she really wants everybody to succeed! I admire her for providing an hour and a half of her time on some evenings going through and summarizing the chapters in our class! Overall really great!
Smirnova is an amazing professor. Chemistry is hard in general but she has lots of jokes to make the class bearable and shes very sweet. She brings props to class to help make her students understand the class. I would definitely take a class of hers again!
She is a great professor!! Slides are on point and she emphasizes important notes on the slides that will be on the exam!! She gives great and fast feedback via mail, which we stan and she runs an extra lecture after every unit for those who are interested in a briefing for chapter summary!!! Overall one of the best professor hands down!!
