Teacher is really, really helpful but the class is really fast paced. You cover a lot of material in little time. If you put the full amount of time into the class you have a pretty decent chance of passing the class. Unfortunately it's still math so if you don't get it, you're stuck.
At times she would start speaking in Spanish and a lot of times she would tell us that we should've learned the concepts in middle school and if we lived in Mexico, we would have. When you tried to ask for help, she yelled at you and ridiculed you. I ended up going to the math lab when I could, to try and understand the concepts she tried to teach.

She's way cool. Ask a lot of questions and she'll love you. She has an accent, but she'll warn you on the first day that if you don't understand her, then its your responsibility to drop the class. Tests and quizzes are really easy if you show up to class and complete each homework. Just go to class and do homework every night and you'll be fine.
ok if your good at interpreting a strong accent. she claims we should basically no all of this from "kindergarden". it feels uncomfortable to ask questions you may have because she seems to make a mockery of you and either laughs or refers to "kindergarden" again. be able to understand the text in the book on your own to do well on tests.
Teacher is sometimes hard to understand and has a tough time sounding out words like substraction, but is very willing to help you understand the material if you apply the effort.
DO NOT TAKE HER. SHE IS NOT GOING TO HELP YOU! i failed this class and taking david m's class and i like david murakami way better.
she was horrible. she can barely speak english. she cannot write, and she says that everything is kindergarten level. she should not be teaching
One of the worst teachers I have ever had! She was never there during her office hours, didn't respond to my emails or phone messages and didn't show up for appointments I made with her outside of class. I felt very uncomfortable asking questions in class because she would make fun of you or yell at you. NEVER TAKE A CLASS FROM HER!!!!
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. She does not explain the material. Asking her questions in class was difficult because she would make you feel stupid for not knowing the answer in the first place. She never responded to e-mails or appointments made with her. I would NOT recommend her.
I don't know why Prof. Velasquez is getting negative feed back. I had her last semester for 143 and am now taking M144 from her this semester. She has a sarcastic personality so if you can deal with that you should have no problem. I often went to her office hours to get help with questions I didnt understand. She is very helpful.
Elena is a funny woman with a weird accent. It was goofy and funny at the beginning, but by the end she just gets annoying and loud. She is very unreliable when it comes to getting back tests and posting things on blackboard. She is almost impossible to understand sometimes too. Tests are pretty hard and she doesn't explain things too well.
Did not trach the class very well at all! Her teaching techniques sucked. Not very helpful when explaining a question on the whiteboard. Her test were ridiculous, and we never got them back in a timely manner. Overall, i would NOT reccomend this professor.
I tried to have an open mind in her class. However by week five she told the class so many examples of how to get an F in her class I felt her intent was to fail all the students. We started with a full class of 23 students by finals week there were 6 of us left. The rest failed or dropped.I will not recommend her for anyone.
I am not impressed with Elena's teaching style at all. She knows what she's doing, but she's not good at explaining it. I would not recommend her for anything. If you are not a math whiz, do not take her class.
Key things to remember in order to pass this class: Come to class everyday! Attendance is not taken but you will miss important information. Do the homework even though she doesn't collect it! The homework seriously helps on the tests. If you have questions, ask her! She is more than willing to answer them
THis class was a joke. She never answered questions and would often interrupt the student asking the question and make them feel stupid. She was very unreasonable when asked to meet outside of class, rarely in office hours and NEVER responded to emails. She is impossible to understand and will openly pick on or mock students who had to miss a class
Professor Velasquez is fun, and awesome. She doesn't like algebra so she makes math interesting, using flowers for variables, etc. Her voice is a bit weird but she's from Argentina I think so that's a factor. Take this class if you like formulas and geometry and you hate algebra. Do the work. It's my favorite class so far.
This was a great class! She explained everything clearly, but didn't take so long we got behind. We learned everything we should had and we even understood it! But be warned, come to class everyday becasue she knows if your gone and when lots of people are gone is when she tends to assign homework or announce quizzes.
Elena is Columbian and has a thick accent. The concepts are very difficult to understand and her methods of teaching are not always clear, that being said she does heavily weigh on your effort. I really thought I was going to fail, but I went to every class did all of the assignments (failed the exams,) but I still passed because I put forth effort
By far the worst professor ever! Never responds to emails, makes you feel like you should have learned everything in kindergarten, says she will do something and she won't. Tries to tell you she made the test super easy and you get it and it is the total opposite. Annoying voice, didn't teach me one thing. DO NOT GET THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!
The worst and RUDEST teacher I have ever had. She yells at you the entire class and will openly insult you if you ask a question. She assigns hw then forgets what she assigns. The test questions are unclear and each worth 10 points. She takes 25 mins per example and her style is very confusing. DO NOT TAKE HER you will hate it.
She's a nice person outside of the classroom but inside she's just confusing. Her teaching style is strange and she's never on top with things on blackboard. Like it's a week before Dead Week and I have no idea what I have. Test don't always reflect what she states and she assigns both book work and webassign work.
A nice lady with a bit of sarcasim. Her lecturing is sometimes unclear and quick, leaving students without the need knowledge. She refuses to comunicate via email. If she sees you putting effort in, she will reward you. She does not keep you upto date with what your grades are. Overall, I would not recommend taking math from this professor.
Do not take this professor. Her very foreign personality along with her superficially high expectations will drive you to the edge. Impossibly hard tests YOU WILL FAIL at least one test.
Hard instructor, she is extremely willing to answer questions and help if you need it but her lecture style is incomprehensible. Find another class.
Very willing to help, but not an especially good teacher. Her explanations of concepts tend to have errors and are difficult to grasp. Her personality is fantastic, but it just can't make up for her poor teaching ability.
Willing to do anything to help you pass, but required lots of work. Lessons are sometimes hard to follow but willing to help at office hours. Since she is foreign she used a different approach, which helped me.
Willing you to pass your class ;however, She wants to ask many questions to assist you.
She is a poor teacher, the class was extremely difficult I ended up dropping for a W. Took the class the next semester and got an A with a different Professor.
She is the worst math teacher I have ever had. She openly insults students who ask her questions. She claims that her tests are easy but they are the exact opposite. She belittles her students by saying that we should have learned this in kindergarten. I would not recommend taking any class with her. The only way to pass is to read the book.
This class is so difficult to understand because it's not easy, and Elena just makes it worst. She explains quite poorly, and thinks everyone is at her math level. I only took her because the class was originally assigned to another professor, but an emergency came up, and she was the replacement. Save yourself headaches and do not take her.
This is the worst instructor I have ever had. Practically everyone failed the first 2 exams and she blamed the students for being lazy. She also assigned a bunch of homework over spring break when we should be resting. You can't understand her in class because her thick accent . Insults students in class. This is the worst instructor ever.
Elena takes the cake for worst teacher I've had so far. Please save yourself the trouble by taking somebody else, Her thick accent mixed with belittling comments add insult to injury. If you like cramming a months worth of lectures in the last week of class, because she cannot relegate time, take her. If not Find somebody else.
Worst teacher I've ever had! CAUTION: Boise State sometimes lists her name under Marie Velasquez, it's the same person. STAY FAR AWAY! You will fail at least 1 test. It's true what other reviewers said, she DOES insult students and yells all the time. She is VERY hard to understand and doesn't explain anything. So much HW. I had to drop the class.
Elena is an interesting case. She is a really good teacher if you talk to her one on one however she is a horrible lecturer. She has a thick accent that is very hard to understand when combined with her constant yelling ,she literally yells in a 30 student class. I love her as a person but can never recommend you take calc from her. Good luck kids.
Easily the worst teacher I've ever had!
Bad teacher. Avoid her at all costs. I really don't understand how a great school like Boise State, an accredited and honorable education facility, can allow such mediocrity.
Elena is a tough grader for seemingly harmless mistakes; accidentally use the wrong unit, but get the process and answer right? -1 points out of 10 for a question. Said she gave points for process but hardly did. She made it very clear what shes looking for are correct answers. Lectures are bad. Book she req'd was useless and lacked important info.
It does not matter what math class you are currently taking, do not take this teacher. I promise you that you will regret it. Taking a different teacher at a 7:30am time slot would be better than this teacher if her class works into your schedule better.
Elena was very helpful during class and would work step by step in a problem to help you understand. This was the second time I had taken the class but a different Professor and she was by far the best for me. Her accent is strong but you can understand what she is saying. I would recommend this Professor if you had struggled before.
Wasn't the best teacher I have had. The quizzes and tests are the only thing she grades. If you meet her in her office and talk to her about the tests, you can usually get some points back. The professors are all about the same quality across the board.
All the professors are about the same level. Had her for 170 and she wasn't bad. So I took her again.
English is not her first language and it is hard to understand what she is saying half the time. I took this class my senior year in high school so I already know how to do the math but if it is your first time taking the class, it would be super hard to understand her or learn from her. she is very loud and constantly sounds like she is yelling.
I honestly had a pretty great experience with Elena. The one downside is that she talks very fast so sometimes it is hard to understand, but she'll go over problems if you ask so you can understand better. You get to work in groups to do homework and basic assignments which is helpful as well. Lecture for first 20 mins or so then you get to do hw.
Has an accent but she is understandable. Pretty funny if you catch her sarcasm. Gives a lot of opportunity for make up credit.
Her accent is very difficult, which makes learning things like calculus difficult. She's also extremely condescending, without providing a chance to really catch on to what she's teaching. Our class has become increasingly detached from the course because nobody can ask questions without being ripped open for it. I wouldn't advise taking her class.
Elena Velazquez was not very good at explaining anything in my Calculus I course. A lot of this course, I remembered from high school, so sometimes I had to tune her out in order to not get confused.
I mean, it's calculus so you gotta do the work if you wanna pass. However, a vast majority of the time I found myself learning better from our LA than our actual teacher. Don't get me wrong, she understands calculus and will get the right answer, but her explanation of problems is not the greatest.
I didn't get to take Calculus in high school (homeschooled) so my background for this class wasn't great. She was fairly mediocre, but her explanations were terrible and I spent most of class tuning her out. If you have her, it's better to just teach yourself the stuff and only sit in class for the participation points.
I did not take precalculus, and she made things seem way more difficult than they actually were. She often explained topics after the homework was due, so you had no chance to get a good grade. I just went to class and didn't listen to her, sometimes doing the homework while she was talking. The work was much easier than she made it seem.
While Elena was usually fairly nice and light hearted, there were time when she was shockingly rude to students. Her online lectures where normally not super useful and would sometimes make things needlessly complicated. What was truly unacceptable though was her not grading a large portion of my work, until after the final... AVOID AT ALL COST!
Does not give enough instruction to be able to complete the homework.
She doesn't even reply to emails. She gives youtube and kahn academy videos for lectures. I have had to take responsibility for my own learning, and do it all on my own. You would be better off in another course guys, seriously.
This class was impossible- the subject of diff eq is easy, but the professor's outrageously terrible organization of the course made it impossible to do well. Assignments were posted and due dates changed hours before they were due with no notice. Prof did not grade anything until the last week of class. Awful! Avoid at all costs.
The organization was confusing at best for this course, and she mainly posted khan academy videos for learning. She did have virtual office hours and did seem kind but I never needed to use them. If you already have a strong understanding of Calc 1 then this is the way to go (since there is hardly any instruction) otherwise look elsewhere.
Horrible! Take ANY other teacher. I love math, but this class made me so angry. No lectures, office hours not helpful. She's rude when answering questions. Changes things at the last minute, often shows up late or misses Zoom calls entirely. Doesn't grade anything until the last week of class. I got an A because I had a tutor/friend. Not worth it.
Just don't. If you do end up taking her go to tutoring on campus.
She does not prepare or explain what you need to do. Online classes are hellish and without explanation. You're plopped into classwork without explanation on how to do the work
she ignores her student she never answers questions very difficult class do not take it with her because she's awful
Took a calculus 1 summer course with Elena. Passed somehow but learned nothing really struggled when getting to calc 2. She was not understandable what so ever.
The class was very well organized. There were so many opportunities to find help if needed. She is very dedicated to her students understanding the material. She even gave us the opportunity to retake a test after re-explaining the material. I wouldn't take this class remotely again. The audio in the classroom was not reliable.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. She didn't explain anything, our "notes" were essentially learning goals, AFTER the class started was when we found out we were required to attend weekly meetings, the quizzes are much more difficult than the assignments. I will never be taking one of her classes again.
I wish I had known about this website before taking this class. It would have saved me so much stress and regret.
Worst online class I have ever taken. No help whatsoever from the notes. Basically explained what you need to know and nothing on how to do it. Tests and quizzes are NOTHING like the homeworks. Also required weekly zooms for a strictly ONLINE class. Super nice lady, terrible with online classes.
Velasquez helped me a lot outside zoom times and gave me multiple opportunities to bring my grade up. The material was extremely difficult and it is a ton of homework. Although this is the worst online class I have ever taken, Velasquez was a very nice lady and helped me personally a lot.
I really enjoyed differential equations. Many of the topics can be learned and understood outside of class so use lectures as you will. I appreciated the attendance requirement(otherwise I probably wouldn't have showed up as often). Definitely do all the practice practice problems for exam preparation. Exams were tedious but not overly difficult.
For the online course, we had assignments due every single day of the week, including the very first day of class. Basically, there is no way not to start out already behind.
She does not respond to emails. There is homework due Mon-Fri. She does not follow the same curriculum as the other calc 2 sections so you can't collaborate with other students in the tutoring center. The tutors don't understand some of the material. She doesn't grade in time so you get 0 feedback on the written homework and learning checks.
Weekly meetings for the online class never helped. Would leave the students halfway through exams after calling out every student's poor performance on tests. Explanations were never helpful when asking for help on homework. Some homework wasn't even posted until a day or two before it was due, which made completing them very frustrating.
Honestly dont know how she is not fired yet. She never responds to emails. Has homework on many different platforms and the first couple months it is so confusing. Puts the link to the homework every week but the link doesn't work therefore you cannot do it. No help whatsoever
I wish I found this page before I got stuck in this class. Please PLEASE just take this class in person do NOT make the same mistake I did. This class is needlessly complicated no real instructions problems that make zero sense. Needs a lot of work to be a useful class.
Ms. Velasquez is very nice and is helpful with questions when you can reach her. You have to join weekly learning checks every week which take about an hour. The online class is very unorganized, there are 3-4 different websites you need to use for homework. She is always in her office hours but reaching her outside class was difficult otherwise.
I never would have found myself writing a negative review and have been through a wide range of professors. Her class is profoundly disorganized. Navigating the class is more difficult than actually learning the calculus. She seems like a nice lady to be friends with but should not be the professor for an online class.
Very nice + caring Knowladge checks are annoying, but you are allowed to do them in a group. So make a study group, it will help Homework+Exams through WebAssign. Hand wrriten homework through GradeSope. Plenty of Extra credit. She gives very detailed feedback (ask for feedback through WebAssign). Exams are easy, just study the guide she gives.
This is a great and understanding professor if you are one to put in the work. If you do the work and try your hardest there is no reason why you shouldn't get an A.
Elena gives incredibly difficult homework far from the standard BSU curriculum. Avoid taking her course if there are other professors available. I contacted her 4 times throughout the semester to meet during her office hours (appointment only) and didn't get an email back from her on any of the 4 separate occasions.
This is the worst teacher I've ever had the pleasure to teach me math. Don't ever take a course with her. She goes too fast and doesn't actually give helpful homework or explanations. I don't like this teacher.
Never answers emails, Hard homework not relating to lectures. Get ready to spend every day in the math tutoring lab.
Do NOT take this class or any other class with her. She doesn't respond to emails, can be very condescending/rude when talking to students, does not give clear instruction, assigns homework from the first day of class, and does not provide adequate learning materials. If you take her class be prepared to watch a lot of YouTube and Khan Academy.
Prof Velasquez constantly belittles the students. She may be trying to be funny, but it just comes across as rude, and when the response any time someone asks a question is to be met with ridicule, we stop asking questions. She blitzes through material and expects you to be on her level already before she teaches you any of the material. Avoid her!
Good teacher would take again, sometime people say she doesn't explain enough, but you just need to pay attention in class, also the final review was really helpful. Great teacher
For the first time, I found myself hating math. She moves through problems too fast, using shortcuts that can be confusing. When approached for clarity, she dismisses it as material we should already know. Feedback on exams is awful & feels passive-aggressive, my first exam was covered in question marks & no explanations. Never responds to emails
Avoid taking Calc 2 online at all costs. Insane schedule that was difficult to work around. Blazes through material without explaining any of the fundamental concepts. Belittles students and their work in front of others during meetings. Assignments were strewn across three websites, impossible to follow her workflow. Take literally anyone else.
Very Confusing, it took her a litteral 20 minutes to do one math problem, The test was 10 of those problems. Grades are confusing as she has you use 2 mathwebsites, she makes you do online math quizzes in class. Often has problems explaining and even performing math. writes everything on the whiteboard and tends to make mistakes. please avoid
I personally think that this professor made it so difficult for me to learn. I attended every lecture and felt like I wasn't learning anything. When me or my group asked questions and were having difficulty understanding she would get frustrated/irritated that we couldn't grasp the topic. She made me feel dumb and not want to learn or participate.
She is extremely belittling and expects you to "already know these things". She flat-out told students that they'd fail the final because they forgot how to do one singular problem. I tried asking a question once, and when explaining how I got my answer, she told me to "stop fighting her". The only thing that helped me was the math tutoring center.
Calculus is hard, so therefore the class is hard. Elena DOES respond to emails; she DOES have office hours, and she DOES have live sessions every single week to ask ANY questions you have. She is a firecracker and funny, but cares that you do well as long as you give effort in her class. Take advantage of what she offers, and you will be fine.
When students ask a question, she starts yelling that we should already know how to do the math. Mind you, she has the voice of a banshee. She also yells and rants during quizzes/exams. She takes forever to put grades in. Lots of homework. 3 different sites are used. I had a LOT more to say but I only get 350 characters unfortunately. Don't take it
She forces people to ask questions but makes fun of anyone who does. She picks on everyone, walks around shouting in a shrill voice during exams, and humiliates students who make mistakes during the exam in front of everyone. It is horrific. She single-handedly created a suffocating environment. Take it next semester if you have to, not worth it.
My god. The reviews are all right. Impossible to get a hold of, and unnecessarily difficult to maneuver her class. Was clearly unaware she had been assigned a class this summer and doubles down on her poor communication when it comes to assignment due dates. Better not ask a concept question either; you better have that already down.
DON'T TAKE W/ HER! Very unorganized, hard to get a hold of-doesn't respond promptly. Multiple HW due everyday. Problems can total up to 85 A NIGHT. Expect to teach yourself-lectures and Zoom sessions are no help. Workload is overwhelming, you'll need 20+ hours a week to survive. Extra credit given but its a last-ditch effort to salvage your grade.
Did the online version of this class. Dropped it after the first week. She makes the course so confusing, does not answer emails, and just all around was not helpful at all. Everyone in the class was so confused. Do not take her and if you do make sure to not take her online.
Terrible organization and communication. I'm a 3.8 gpa student, the content was not a problem. Took 3 days to email back, announced exam dates only two days prior, Homework was never posted on Canvas, instead submitted on two different platforms. Nothing was graded on Canvas so its impossible to tell your grade or missing assignments..
I don't even know what to say. RMP took down my first review. Avoid.
I retook this for credit to improve my foundations of calculus before going to higher levels. This was awful. Homework was difficult, and she yelled at students about the test being "easy, and she could do it in 15 minutes in her head". She's disrespectful to students and does not seem to care about what she is doing. Take it in person, not online!
Do not take this class. I know it's tempting as she's the only real online option for calculus, but you'll get a better grade and save time with any other instructor. There's mandatory zoom quizzes weekly, 6 WebAssign assignments weekly, written homework, and discussion board posts. Not to mention the exams, which are their own mess. Do not take.
