She grades impossibly and doesn't realize that it's an entry level english comp course. She thinks that everyone in the class wants to become english writers. Also, claims to have given only 3 A's in 40 students last semester. Get out while you can.
I'll take that back. It's been a semester, and I actually feel that the class has helped me, a lot. After the initial scare (holy sh*t, this is insane) I've come to realize that this class has helped me write/think much better than I have in the past.
She thinks everybody is an english lit major and doesn't realize that students have better things to do than write 13 page poetry critiques EVERY WEEK!! Avoid at all costs!
She is just a ****! She thinks that everybody is an english major and always forgets pple are not good at everything. people have better to do than writing pages of damn stories or essays! nonsense! AVOID HER! I DO NOT EVEN RECOMMEND HER and will never!!
I don't get it her class was very interesting and not too tuff. I actually enjoyed this class most of the time and she does have a temper but over all she is a nice lady.
Holy Crap! Little did I know that my semester was going to be filled with English... a course I didn't even have to take, but couldn't get out of by the time I realized it. I spent so much time on this class that I had little time to focus of my important classes.
You'll learn a lot. At first it seems like a lot of work, but you don't have to write too much once you get the hang of what she's looking for. A worthwhile class and she's a nice professor. As long as you make an effort, you'll do well.
Takes poetry way to seriously and always looks for problems in all work one submits. She's crazy and tries to make her class as impossible and hard as she can. Gives endless assignments and if you are taking any other classes...do not take hers!!!
She was unreasonable and didn't understand that English wasn't the only class
Not reasonable when it came to grading
One of the best classes I have ever taken. Eleni not only taught me how to write better, but how to think better. You'll learn a new perspective, this class absolutely opens your mind. I have never enjoyed a class so much. She's a nice person and really works with you to improve your writing.
She is unreasonable and feels that all other classes come second next to hers.
This woman has no concept of the ammount of work she demands. Lies about grading procedure, criticizes America any chance she gets, has no concept of time (keeps class late every day), demands a calibur of work that far exceeds an intro course. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROF.
Preaches her own philosophies a lot that have nothing to do with the course material.
Possibly the worst teacher alive... I wouldn't wish her class on my worst enemy. Absoultely awful.
She's very tough as far as work goes- she assigns a lot of work for not a lot of points...don't take her if you don't like writing
wow....shes nuts...seriously...she has no clue what the hell she is doing with grades....ill admit that she pushes thinking, but other than that she really needs to work on some freakin people skills and manners if you ask me
Absolutely every person in the class hated her by the end of the semester. The work takes up all of your time. Assignments are painfully ambiguous, vague, and require much more writing than she will admit. Referring to her as a horrible professor is a huge understatement.
These reviews seem a bit dramatic- she's a good teacher- she knows her stuff- and she makes you think. She helps with the basics of understanding some literature- she has her opinions- but she doesn't push them on anyone-you will write a lot- but this is college- what do you expect?
Does not believe in giving A's to more than 2 students in class. I worked harder in this class than any other, and will still get a B. Assignments come often and they are very vague. There is a paper due almost every week. Gives her own opinions about why America sucks way too much.
Terrible. Gives 15 credits worth of work in a 3 credit class. If you want a B in this class, you'll be working around the clock. Fill your lit requirement elsewhere. She is an impossible grader. AVOID!!!
Very tough course with A LOT of work, but very good teacher. I learned a lot in this class - not only stuff for writing but also for application in real life. She's very friendly and willing to help. However, the assignments aren't always clear, and there's a test and a paper every week.
She's a good teacher and a really nice person. What she teaches in class are skills you will need in any class. She does require a little more work, but it's easy work. Very interesting class and you'll get a lot out of it.
had the night class-paper due almost every week, readings and quiz every week too..a lot of work but the class was interesting and i learned a lot..try to show up for class and participate in discussions as much as you can
i had prof. anastasiou for a freshman/sophmore class that i waited until my senior year to take...even after a lot of experience with dif. profs she was still very tough for a 'beginner' class. hint for current students...be respectful and you will get it back. she's willing to put time aside if you're willing to put forth the effort. this isn't high school anymore, you have to think now. if the assignment isn't clear...ask. i'm sure you have a mouth (which could also be why you're not passing) ;) go pitt!!
great teacher, she really makes this class worth your time. even the most boring stories are interesting, you just have to do the homework (which isn't too much). if you make even half an effort, she makes this class worth your time, and you'll get a good grade.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. She really wants to teach, and she's one of the few instructors who is able to get you as excited for class as she is. Even the most boring stories become really interesting after you've heard her analyze it. Great teacher, definitely should take a course with her before you graduate.
NEVER take her- especially if you're not an english major. Grades papers incredibly tough like you're shakespeare himself writing them. Doesn't understand the concept of easing up on the workload or grading for an intro level course. Also keeps strict points on participation. I took it pass/fail after a few weeks. NEVER TAKE HER CLASSES!!!
Class is tuff. but learned a lot from this class. She is a nice lady. Be ready to read often.
She thinks that she is 100 times smarter than her students, totally arrogant and unreasonable.
Probably one of my fave profs at Pitt. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she gets so excited when she sees even the slightest progress in your work. One of the few profs at Pitt who makes paying the tuition worth it.
While always available by e-mail, her assignments are ridiculously ambiguous. She also would rather fail a student who is working hard than give someone who is not quite AS perfect as her god-like self an A. Drop the class and switch to another section if you have her.
Class was utterly daunting. Completing homework assignments that were 12 pages long while researching and writing completely separate papers was not up my ally, especially in an intro course. Her personal views also dictated what grade you received on assignments because of the political nature of the class. Drop it and save yourself the misery.
Dont take her. we had to come up with our own thesis, papers were 2 pages longer than with any other professor, she holds you late almost every class. if you dont agree with her interpretation of the text, she basically tells you that while your idea is possible, you are wrong. end of story. drop the class asap
Way harder than the other english professors at school made my semester miserable don't take!!
Teaches to undergrads like we're post-doctorates. Lots of reading and lots of writing, impossible to do all the work the day before. Has strange opinions on interpreting short stories, and not very open to others. It's a constraining, frustrating class, fiction or non fiction major. The grades are idiotic, and essays horrible. Get out ASAP.
Fantastic professor! It was so easy to get all the work done the day before, within an hour or two AT MOST. She makes this class interesting and really brings the short stories to life. She even gives out study guides and wants you to succeed - show any interest and she'll go above and beyond to get you an A.
do not take her class. period. she asks too much of you and nearly forces you to put her class first. 5+hrs of reading and 4+pgs of writing PER WEEK only to still fail the reading quizzes and get a mediocre grade in the class? I'm an A/B student and I still think this was torture, so if you don't want to hurt your gpa, stay away.
If you're a senior who's over school and waited to take this lit elective last, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. Her workload is ridiculous and will cause many sleepless nights just to get it all done. She gives no direction on essays and quiz questions are too specific given the amount of reading. Unless you enjoy torture take this with someone else.
Eleni makes you think she wants you to do well without telling you her expectations until halfway through the year. The quiz questions are way too specific for the amount of reading expected and she is an incredibly subjective grader. I'm getting A's in all of my 1000 level lit classes, yet I can barely manage a B in hers. Avoid at all costs.
I loved her as a person, she made class very fun and had great ideas to further your thinking. The journal is an enormous amount of effort for ONLY 10 POINTS. She grades the essays too harshly and takes off points for ridiculous things. I feel as though she pretends she wants you to do well but secretly lives to ridicule your writing.
Eleni is interesting as a person - but she treats this class as if everyone in it were graduate students. Huge work load and she will give you ENDLESS negative feedback on your papers. She will write in all available space - its a little scary... AVOID
I usually an A/B student, and enjoy a challenging class. Eleni singlehandedly ruined my college experience. She seems interested in 'you' the student, but she does not provide constructive criticism. You will work very hard on your midterm and final essays only to find her comments in every crevice of the paper. I am hurt and distraught.
This class was tough, but I became a better student for it. I have used her detailed method of essay writing in every class since this one and have received excellent scores. Her teaching has significantly helped me to become a better writer.
Had her for my freshmen english composition class and this woman is terrible. Weekly quizzes and 3 papers throughout the year. I worked hard and only got a B, but i know people who failed her class. She wants you to get better at english but she makes you work way too hard for this class. Avoid her.
First and foremost Eleni is very nice as a person and I believe her heart is in the right place. That said the quizzes are nigh impossible. The journal is key, get the full amount done and follow her "journal fodder" and you'll succeed. The second essay is way easier than the first, just follow her (hard to read) comments. Hard but well worth it
Her enthusiasm is contagious and she is completely willing to donate the time to any student hoping to better their writing and critical skills. For those who write that she is not easy, if you want easy you don't really want a teacher. Teaching involves work, she embraces that fact, puts that work in, and then expects you to do the same in return.
Very helpful, willing to meet with any student. Harsh grader, writes in every space of the page. I wrote 9-10 page papers & journal entries (only 10% of final grade!) that took HOURS. I have no idea how I got an A. Grades participation points as well but frankly I never got full credit (spoke @ least 2-3 times per class). AVOID IF YOU VALUE LIFE.
Very harsh grader, writes on every inch of your essay. Enthusiastic, willing to help any student. I wrote 4 9-10 PG essays & 11-12 PG homeworks (only 10% of grade)and barely got an A. Ridiculously hard for a Seminar in Composition Class. Also grades for participation. I spoke 2-3 times per class & never got the full points. AVOID if you value life.
Anastasiou is great in leading class discussions and giving feed back on your papers. However her prompts are often times a mess and very hard to understand. I often times found myself just guessing what to write and going with it. Attendance and participation are mandatory when it comes to this class.
She is a very nice teacher and really cares about her students. If you need help with writing, she is generally very accessible. There is a lot of reading and writing for this class, but if you are looking to take your writing from the high school level to the college level Eleni will certainly help you do that. If you work hard, it will pay off
Nice person and tries really hard to help you improve your writing. Prompts are pretty vague, but she gives really good feedback on your papers. Gives out a lot of homework.
If you can avoid her, run like hell. She is looking for something very specific in an essay that nobody but her can produce. Everyone I've spoken to in my class thinks she grades too harshly and that she is rude to students. I hated coming to class, but participation is the only thing that brought up my grade
Passionate teacher that genuinely wants you to learn but runs the class with no awareness that its a required class. Tears apart anything you write and is detvermined to make the class harder to get an A in than any math or science class youll take.
Really passionate about English and writing. She's determined to make you a better student and develop the best of your writing. Any English/writing class you take after that it's going to be easy. Really nice person as well, she cares a lot about her student. Work your ass off and you should be fine.
Just don't do it. She will beat your paper like a dead horse. She's looking for stuff in your essays that no one will be able to give her. It's hell, I promise you that
The worst reviews of all time. Had us do a bunch of revising only not to receive a grade on it. Gave the blandest reviews without any meaning and wrote too much to confuse us into thinking we're stupid. Honestly wanted to die everyday before going to class and after
Do not take this class!!!
Eleni has been great with being understanding of what is going on this semester. Her class definitely is not an easy A and you do have to buy a few books that are not available for free. Your grade mostly comes from two exams that are a little tricky but reasonable if you do all the readings.
She is hands down the worst English teacher I have ever had. She gives a ridiculous amount of homework and grades the work like it is a graduate-level class. Not only does she make you have your camera on in class but if you do not talk she will not give participation points. She is extremely stubborn and sees any criticism as an insult. AVOID HER!
She's nice, but DON'T take her class. Out of all my intensive classes I was taking this semester, this vampire elective class was the hardest. TOO MANY READINGS for starters. She also records lectures on Sundays and then literally takes down the lecture the next day. It's beyond me why she does that. She doesn't prepare us well for exams either.
She is very nice, but the tests do not make sense. There are lot of readings, and she asks incredibly specific questions that are nearly impossible to find the answer to given the time limit and other questions remaining on the test. She does not prepare you for the tests at all, information from the lecture is difficult to find. Do not take.
Thinking of taking vampire class for fun? Go ahead, but NOT with her. There is SO much reading, the tests can be impossible, and she does everything she can to prove it's not an "easy elective" course.
I had Prof. Anastasiou for RFT recitation online this semester. You must be on time for every meeting and your camera must be on. Your responses must be thorough and you must participate. The way she grades is very clear which I appreciate. She is such a gem & did not waste any time. She knew the content front and back and put time into recitation.
thought taking a vampire class would be fun, easy, and a gpa booster.... nope. she gives so much reading and her quizzes/ discussion boards are hard to do good on. she is also rude and seems like she wants her students to do bad. do not recommend
Okay. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you want an easy GPA boost, take it with another professor. There is an absurd amount of reading weekly, the exams are close to impossible, and this prof called people out in class with no remorse. Even if you try to participate she will pretty much embarrass you. Also, she has never even seen Twilight. Red Flag.
took this class as what i thought would be a gpa boost in a fun class. was totally wrong. she assigns a LOT of reading and is incredibly disrespectful to students. she doesn't upload powerpoints on canvas and does not allow late/makeup work. if you want to take the vampires course, for the love of god take it with a different professor
I took this class as I'm not very confident in my writing skills and wanted to start off with an "easier" writing class. This was not that. I knew people in the seminar class that didn't get anywhere near the workload that I got in this class. She also grades everything very harshly. SKIP THIS!! JUST TAKE THE SEMINAR!!!!
I love English, but this woman singlehandedly makes me hate it more and more everyday. She is inconsiderate and rude and as far as grading goes, she's insanely harsh and seems to forget that none of us are Pulitzer Prize authors. Worst teacher I've had since coming to this school and I suggest doing everything you can to avoid her. Bad person too.
She is horrible. Avoid at all costs. For a required course especially it should not be this hard. She grades everything so harshly. I used to consider myself a fair writer but she tore everything in my drafts and final papers to shreds.
gave plenty of opportunities to earn points, but all of that is destroyed since we had exams with DETAILED questions from everything we had read w/ no exam prep/help. the lectures weren't very helpful. the discussions were fun, but she does interrupt you. she calls students out, and it's an obscene amount of reading for an elective.
This class literally kicked my as$. The most frustrating and hard class I had this semester which I was absolutely not expecting considering it is a gen ed comp class that every freshman has to take. She is caring and lenient and can be funny too, but I would avoid taking her, especially for sem in comp. This class really stressed me out overall.
1. This was the MOST difficult, demanding, and time consuming class I took this semester 2. she is funny sometimes 3. she grades so so harshly 4. She is pretty lenient with deadlines 5. she gives wayyyy too much feedback on essays; every single inch of margin has comments written in it (very overwhelming to look at)
Micro was unironically easier than this. Unreasonably tough grader. My friends typically do 1-2 page casual writeups on career goals she has us do four 5page essays about masculinity and politics. Pre-class reading isn't much of an issue. Too nitpicky in corrections, literally entire page filled. Forgets not all of us wants to write for a living.
Eleni was a very kind and understanding person, but she was an extremely tough grader and had no concept of how much work she assigned. I took the vampire class as an elective, definitely not expecting 100-200 pages of reading a week. This class was honestly one of my hardest classes, you have to put absolutely full effort in to even try to pass.
This is a really hard class for a gen-ed. The homework consisted of 100+ pages of reading per week combined with an online test and a discussion board. The discussion boards often had three parts and to get a half-decent score you often need to write 500-1000 words (again per week). Lectures made no sense outside of class, you need to take notes.
Incredibly rude under the guise of "brutal honesty". Made comments about our appearances/clothing styles, extremely critical of work. On essay drafts, she will give it back smothered with illegible notes. She has a specific idea of writing that hasn't ever helped. Classmates cried in class & reported her to no avail. Even for good writers... SKIP!
I had Eleni for recitation, and boy was she a character. She's very animated and makes recitations feel like a community, though she does grade solely based on participation/attendance. There is no wiggle room on changing your grade and you have to participate at least three to four times. If you're engaged and prepared you'll do just fine.
You've GOT to be passionate about vampires to survive this class. It's a serious amount of reading, but not an unreasonable amount- and while she gives a lot of critique/feedback on the weekly writings, as long as you're engaging with the material it isn't hard to get a good grade. Also, she's a pretty fun lecturer!
if you want to even think about surviving you have to participate more than once EVERY class, attendance mandatory, and its just an insane amount of reading and effort for a gen-ed. shes an amazing professor but youre better off going somewhere else. unless you love vamps an unusual amount! then shes perfect haha
Honestly my favorite professor ever despite how hard the class was sometimes, I took her for English a few semesters back. If you want an easy A, get it together you're in college. She's a tough grader which is normal. She knows her stuff, take advantage and learn a thing or two. Really nice person and will help you out if you care to ask.
This class was so amazing and had me engaged the entire time. The content of the course was also interesting although it was a lot of reading but that was expected. She is an amazing professor and super fun!
Eleni's lectures were so interesting all semester; I wasn't bored at all during the two and a half hour long classes. Weekly readings, reading quizzes, and discussion boards along with a midterm and a final based on facts about the readings. You must speak twice every class for full credit, but I don't talk much and I still got full credit
There are weekly discussion posts and quizzes on the readings so prepare for a lot of work. I did find this class difficult at times due to some other circumstances I had this semester but it still felt pretty manageable. Eleni is a really sweet professor, although a tough grader. She wants everyone to do well and it shows.
This class stressed me out all semester. The course is interesting but take it with a different professor. There are 3-4 100+ page readings every week. You can't miss class and you have to speak twice every class to get full credit. 2 1/2 hour long class that will never end even 1 minute early. Easily my hardest class and it was my only gen ed.
Just dropped this class. Assigned HW that was due before the first day of class. "Everyone will get an A if you do all the readings", but it is 100+ pages before every class. WAY too much work for a gen ed.
This class was unreasonably difficult for a gen-ed. Yes, it was interesting, but tell me why it was like 50-150 pages of reading per week. Also, the tests were actually difficult. Eleni says she doesn't make exams on memorizing details and more on key themes, but there were definitely memorizing details. Lectures in her small class were fun tho
Eleni is a nice professor however, this is WAY too much work for Gen Ed. I was stressed the entire semester, I took this class because I've always loved &obsessed over vampires since I was younger and I STRUGGLED a lot! Lectures are enjoyable but there is definitely over 150 pages of reading every single week. Extra credit options, topics are cool.
