Eli is an awesome guy but if you have taken any ecology class this will be all review. There is a daily quiz that requires a decent amount of preparation to teach you "study skills". Tests are easy and there is no textbook but he does assign random things without much notice. It is obvious he is not used to teaching upper division classes.
Had Eli back when he taught at WCC. It was one of the funnest, most interesting classes I ever took. He's super funny and helpful and will make the course you're taking a blast. Very high recommendation
Eli is a great professor. It is true that there is a lot of work for this class but its worth it. He assigns reading and short lectures to review before each class. He gives you a ten question multiple choice quiz on it. However, they aren't very difficult. He cares about you learning the information. I would 100% take this class again.
I really enjoyed this class a lot. He was super helpful and I learned so much from him. I would highly recommend anyone to take this class
He is a nice guy and the class is generally pretty straightforward. However don't rely on him at all. He won't answer your emails, if he forgot to teach something, he'll mention it at the last second as an announcement, and though the power points have some info they are very vague. So you need to pay attention to get an A.
Good teaching a learning environment, entertaining lectures.
Eli is a really nice and friendly guy. His lectures are clear (sometimes he goes through them a little quickly but he's happy to slow down if asked) and the exams are not difficult if you study. He's very approachable and willing to help with anything. Overall, he's a good teacher who really cares about the subject he teaches.
This is the best class I've ever taken, Eli totally makes the class. You have to read 10-25 page scientific journals before every class and take a short 9 question quiz by yourself then with a group but you learn a lot. Plus there's no book! I would highly recommend a class with Eli to anyone, just be prepared to work for your A.
Eli's lectures are really humorous and he's a funny guy. He assigns online quizzes that you have to take every week. I don't know why but I honestly thought his exams were pretty tough. It seems easy, but there are a lot of specific and tricky questions that throw you off. Definitely review your notes before you take the exam.
Eli's class is great. It really is an easy class if you are the kind of person who likes to be tested everyday. He is very clear with what he wants from you and makes it easy for you to accomplish. I think the quizzes and tests are easy to do well on if you you do the readings and have been in class.
Eli Loomis is easily my favorite professor I've had throughout my 13 years of school. Even though I took a class lecture with 400 people, Eli's class seem like there were only 40. His lectures are interesting, the subject is easy, and he teaches directly what the tests are going to be. If you have the chance, please have him as a professor.
Makes the class interesting.
THIS IS THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! (I've been to 3 universities). Cares deeply about the topic & the class as a whole.
As someone who's not a science person, I was pleasantly surprised by this class. Eli is funny and lectures are always interesting. Tests are mostly based on the weekly assignments so make sure you do them and study them! It's a really big class so there's no mandatory attendance but since there's no textbook it's hard to pass if you don't come.
Daily quizzes, do the reading!
LOVED this class. It was rough if you missed a day or two but for the most part really easy to get good grades. His lectures are entertaining and interactive!
Eli is a great professor! His lectures are easy to follow along and he always encourages questions to be asked. There is no textbook, just papers to be read on canvas with quizzes taken in class. I found the midterms to be really easy and the projects to be interesting.
Eli is a great professor and I would, without a doubt, take another one of his classes. He is energetic and passionate about teaching. He also loves helping his students. There are some readings but they are straight forward, interesting, relevant, and fairly short. There are also group projects but they are pretty easy and help your grade a lot.
Eli has been my favorite professor by far. He uses real life examples and he's really knowledgable about the topics he's passionate about. He's really goofy, peep his socks.
Eli is such an awesome dude and is very passionate about what he teaches. He makes class interesting and is goofy and funny. As long as you pay attention and read the articles for the homework assignments you should get an A.
He does a great job talking about everything! He is just so good at putting together the lecture to keep it interesting and engaging. You can tell he is patient about the topic and it makes you get motivated to potentially do something about it. Environmental issues can be depressing but he does a good job talking about how you could help.
Eli is an amazing professor, he is always ready to teach, and he likes to learn from his students. Tests are all multiple choice, including the final. I highly recommend taking this class.
This class with Eli was awesome. There are 3 group tutorials but they are super easy and then there are 4 exams and a lot of online quizzes but they are usually simple. It is pretty easy to get a good grade in this class while rarely attending. But, his lectures are fun and his personality makes it super interesting. Definitely recommend!
Eli is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He is so enthusiastic about what he's teaching and obviously loves every moment of it. Super energetic and lively and just a pleasure to learn from.
Best prof I've ever had at Western! Really funny and easy to like, he respects his students and his work a lot. I absolutely recommend taking any class with him, he's so enthusiastic about his job you can't help but be enthusiastic as well.
Eli is the homie!! He's passionate about the subject and cares deeply about his students. All of the topics are extremely relevant and the lectures are always interactive and funny. Homework and quizzes are online and easy if you do the readings & watch the videos, which you need to do for the tests anyways and aren't usually very long. 10/10
Eli is so passionate about his subject and it really comes through in the lectures. He is funny and you can tell he's just a really great guy. Lots of lecture, but really interesting. Lots of small quizzes taken on Canvas (not hard). 3 exams, also not hard if you study. He offers an extra credit assignment as well. 10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND.
Very chill teacher. Homework before every class but its not to hard and its online.
Eli is an amazing professor. He is super funny, kind, and respected by his students. He makes the effort to get to know everyone which is really cool. If you're an ESCI major and have taken ecology previously, this class is basically review of that. But if you're looking for a good elective class to fill a few credits I recommend you take this!
Eli is a funny professor who obviously has a passion for the environment. Some lectures can be depressing, but he does a good job looking at all sides on issues and tries to end classes on a positive note. There is homework almost every class, but they are mostly short quizzes or surveys. Lectures or interesting and Eli is genuinely a cool guy.
Eli without a doubt the best professor that I have ever had the pleasure of being in class with. He knows his stuff very well and presents the information in an engaging way. I love you Eli
An excellent professor for the subject, he really cares about the material. The homework always went really well with the class material.
Eli was a great instructor for my Environmental Studies class. We had a few group projects throughout, but those were the only days in class that were really necessary to go to (other than test days). He's very passionate about the subject, and is very understanding if you have to miss a test or group day. Great guy overall and great teacher!
Eli is an incredible professor! He is so passionate in Environmental Disturbances and makes the class extremely interesting. There are daily quizzes that aren't the easiest sometimes but the exams come with study guides that are in depth and make the exams easy. Everyone should definitely take Environmental Disturbances from Eli!
Eli himself is a good teacher. Though, he didn't let any of the 400+ people know he wasn't gonna show up one day. Fine by me tho, I got to go home. He's usually punctual. No book, lots of online quizzes (not googleable), and 4 tests. If you miss a test there's a retake at the end of the year. Readings and quizzes are HARD until the last 2-3. He'sok
He cares about what he's teaching, so it's not boring. pretty easy since there's no textbook as long as you pay attention.
This professor was super easy going. His lectures were very easy to follow and he tries to keep your attention(some lectures can be boring sense it is an hour and 20 minute class). There are group projects that get you easy A's as long as you put in some effort. Tests are pretty simple just make sure to go over his word documents in modules!
Eli is a super knowledgeable guy who uses very good examples in his lectures. The class is lecture heavy but there are 3 classes dedicated to group projects. There is homework before every class but it's usually easy and takes maybe 20 minutes. There aren't many tests and they are weighted heavily, there is extra credit opportunities though.
A test every 2 weeks and homework after every class (easy). The final is cumulative. Tests I got 95% with medium amount of studying. He provides a study guide and posts PowerPoints so no need to go to class or take notes. (I did go to class though) good lectures and he did his best to make the class less lecture like and more fun. Easy GUR
Eli has probably been one of my favorite professors. His lectures were very interesting I hardly ever felt bored in his class. He is an easy going guy who is very approachable. The exams were fair, study the material and you'll do great. There are quizzes online you take for readings but they are easy. I really enjoyed this class and Eli.
His lectures were very entertaining yet educational. What we were learning had a lot of application to what was going on in the world. Although many jokes were made in class, we never got too off topic with what we were learning in class. Everything he gave you was on the test and he gave many of resources to help prepare you for the test.
A very caring professor. He shares his experiences which are really interesting and has fairly engaging lectures. Quizzes are online and if you go over the study guide he sends out, the tests are pretty easy.
This class was very easy, especially if you've taken 325. I initially didn't like this course because we would waste a lot of time talking but it get's more applied later on. The exams are easy and no one lost more than a few points on the canvas presentation at the end. The daily quizzes are harder but altogether they didn't bring my grade down.
Eli is amazing! You can really tell that he cares about the subjects on hand, and would go above and beyond to answer student's questions. The class consisted of daily quizzes that were about a short research paper or two, but they may be dense. The tests were extremely easy, and study guides were spot on. Project wasn't hard at all. 10/10
Eli is a sick teacher. One of my favorites ever, and taking his class online during the Covid-19 pandemic made me excited to take some of his classes in person. 10/10 would recommend. Such a funny and passionate guy.
With COVID classes are obviously a lot different! However, he really makes it straight to the point with his lecture and reading load and simple quizzes! He also obviously cares a lot about the subject and it makes learning more fun :)
Took this class online (corona) and he organizes everything so well! There's 8 quizzes and a powerpoint lecture and handful readings for each one. Super nice and understanding, and responds to emails! He also sends videos of animals throughout the quarter which is super fun. Keep up with the work and you'll be fine!
Took an asynchronous class online with Eli this quarter, and I have to say, it would have been awesome to have a class with him in-person. He radiates enthusiasm for the subject of environmental science, and seemed like a friendly guy. Course was interesting, well-organized and not too hard. Thumbs up from me.
Online async. course. There are 1-2 readings/week from a scientific paper or something similar, as well as a powerpoint to watch. There is a pretty easy weekly quiz and one quarter-long project that he breaks up into small chunks so it is manageable. I really enjoy this class and there are no midterms/final. If you do the work you'll be fine.
I loved this Professor so much. He clearly loves what he is talking about and has formatted his class to be very interesting online. His class was fairly easy. His quizzes are easy to pass as long as you read and watch the material given, though some of it can be randomly specific. There are no midterms or finals in this class.
Even though this class was asynchronous, I loved having Eli as my prof! He is fun-loving and very invested about his work. He responds to emails very promptly as well. This was a super easy class, but still feel like I learned a lot. His class structure is easy to follow and quizzes are open note. I loved the variety of media we looked at.
Class was online asynch. Lots of long article reading with a long powerpoint, short video, and a quiz every week. Very, very doable for a 4 credit 300-level especially when compared to others (dare I compare to tox 3333). Great guy who cares about what he does.
Eli is the best professor I've had so far at western. Even though it was an online class he was incredible, especially because of the weekly wrap-up videos that he always filmed out in the wilderness. just incredible. if you take a class from him, definitely schedule a meeting with him because it's worth it, esp if you want to be in esci field
The lectures can get boring at times, but the online version is manageable to get through.
Loomis is by far one of the best professors I have ever had; he is clear, organized, passionate, and accessible outside of class. Every week, you have class readings, a PowerPoint, and a video to watch, which then leads to a weekly quiz. My class was ASYNC, but I wish it was in person because it was so much fun, and interesting too! 10/10!
Took this and ESCI 225 with Eli. Solid professor. Recorded lectures are engaging, assignment criteria is clear, and the workload is chill, regardless of what class you take with him (out of 302 and 225).
I love the way he set the online class up, it was engaging and you can just tell he would be so much fun to have an in-person class with. Do the work and your set, it's not hard if you take the time to do it right. He includes side information that is actually interesting that you can choose to look at! I would recommend him
super interesting and well-taught class that isn't too difficult! I feel like I learned a lot but the class didn't stress me out. Eli is a great professor. I'd love to have him for an in-person class one of these days!
Professor Loomis is a nice guy, but a terrible teacher. His expectations are incredibly unclear. He also never released assignments on time, often leaving assignments locked, without descriptions, or without a submission option until less than 12 hours before the due date. Be prepared to do a ton of work in very little time with no guidance
Quizzes at the start of every class, but they're all comprehension-based and help keep the class on track with readings. Eli goes above and beyond and learns every single person's name, even in a 40 person class. You can tell he cares about his students and he's passionate about environmental science.
Eli is such a nice and enjoyable professor. His lectures were interesting and clear and I loved that he learns everyones names. He provides pretty comprehensive study guides but the exams are difficult. However he is a harsh grader. You will get exam questions right and he will take points off for extremely nitpicky things.
While it's a very difficult class with lots of outside of class work, Eli makes sure he doesn't waste your time. This class, Eli, and The Planet editors helped improve my writing and journalism exponentially. If you want to take a shot at being a real reporter, this class is difficult but absolutely worth it. A rewarding class for sure!
Eli was an amazing professor and definitely inspired me to expand my knowledge. His lectures are very engaging, and he keeps the content relative. II He is also very easy to take too and willing to work with you outside of class. I would 100% recommend taking a class with Eli!
I was very excited to take this class because Eli got such good reviews and environmental studies is my major. However, his tests are scantron and nearly impossible to do well on. The class average for the second test was 65%. His lectures, practice tests, and study guide do not match the tests. He and his TA don't respond to emails!
This class is based on long stat heavy articles. Despite thoroughly studying the concepts, success on these assessments was more luck rather than understanding-he expects us to memorize 100s of numbers not knowing which ones he will test us on. When the class average was 65% on the 2nd test, there was no acknowledgment from Eli. Ignores emails!
would rate 0 if I could. Eli refused to make accommodations for students, constantly graded assignments 3 or more weeks after their due date (assignments from April got graded the day before the final) so you are unable to tell what your grade will be until the day before the final. The class has cumulative in person exams with no notes.
easily my least favorite class i've ever taken at western, steer clear of this if you can. Eli Loomis im sure is an ok dude but a god awful teacher, his exams are no notes with extremely unhelpful study guides, and practice tests that don't have anything to do with the actual material, no wonder the class averages 65% on the tests.. but no change.
One of my favorite professors! He was very kind and clear on topics. The class has a mini quiz on the readings assigned every day of in person lecture but they're super quick and an easy 10 points. Lectures are really engaging, and there are many opportunities to get outside for class too. 10/10 would absolutely take more classes in the future.
There is a LOT of material and you absolutely must stay on top of it, but Eli makes it worth it. Lectures are well organized and there's the occasional outside activity (with advanced notice). One of the most educational courses I've taken and the class structure has really helped me retain the knowledge. Prof is very kind and class is engaging.
Nice guy and he clearly enjoys teaching this class. There was an article to read before every class and reading quiz at the start of each class. Reading was typically 7-12 pages. 2 midterms and a final. Tests were not too hard but there were a lot of short answer questions and he was a tough grader. Examples talked about in class were on the tests
Great prof. Wolverines are awesome
Nice prof, he loved to have fun and taught us lots of interesting things. First time teaching the class was rather chaotic and confusing at times, but he definitely cares about his students. I would love to grab drinks and talk about environmental issues with him, but the class was aight
I loved him as a person he was really fun and engaging but didn't have any sort of assignment that made the information stick and made the class awful the only thing he did had in class group assignments which didn't help at all - 2024-2025 winter quarter
Eli is a wonderful person and very passionate. That being said, this class was seriously lacking in structure and substance. It's almost entirely self-guided, which is great if you're an ESCI major and know what you're interested in, but it was too much flexibility for me (for a GUR). He does not always respond to emails in a timely manner.
Very good and interesting lectures! Reading HW was assigned after each class for a quiz the next class, but are very easy if the material is read. Professor is very kind and understanding, and loves learning and teaching!
Good professor, big class and diverse assignments. Some effort needed, but nothing excessive.
Great lectures, he knows his stuff. I feel like I learned a lot from this class. Course load wasn't too heavy, but there is a lot of reading.
Eli is truly one of the most engaging professors I've had. I also took Environmental Disturbances with him and it was one of my favorites. During his lectures, he provides insight to current issues, inspiring projects, and highlights the importance of indigenous knowledge. He is kind, passionate about his work, and curious. Highly recommend!
He is a great teacher! I honestly feel like he's been the most engaging professor I've had. He seems to be interested in us and how he can help. He's quite funny. With that being said, his assignments aren't head breaking but always do them on time and be on top of it. He has extra credit assignments that help and aren't that hard either!
Amazing professor! While your grade is based on a few assignments, they are very easy to do well. He gives detailed expectations and feedback and will work with you if you're confused. Lectures don't really apply to assignments because of how the class is set up, but they are fascinating and good for practicing critical thinking and empathy. 10/10
His lectures are very engaging a ND I was always happy to go to class. He explained things in an interesting way and all the content in the lectures and homework was enjoyable and informative. Would absolutely recommend, especially if you are interested in environmental science.
I loved this class. Eli is a great guy, he has amazing energy, and you can tell that he's very passionate about what he teaches (and he's an incredibly engaging presenter). I took this class for a GUR and both the material and the way it was taught were incredible. 10/10 recommend.
Eli is wonderful! He loves what he teaches and it shows. His lectures are very entertaining, tests aren't too hard, but defintley require studying. Lots of group work 10/10 prof
