Great Class. A lot of fun and a lot of new interesting information. If you will take this class interest in anthropology will appear, even it was not there before. Makes you think and make decisions...I really enjoyed that class
He is a great lecturer. Very enthusiastic for his subject. Clearly hard headed and stubborn. Yet compassionate, helpful, and approachable. He is great but unfortunately the fact that he has bashed doctors and frequently informs the class that he finds himself handsome has made me lose some respect for his character.Maybe I should lighten up though.
everyone needs to take his class. i secretly wanted to fail so i could take his class again. just go to class and take good notes. you don't really need the book.
Kary was the sickest teacher i had at MPC. his class was a breeze and was an easy grade but you still learn alot. i looked forward to going to his class in the morning
Honestly, this is one of the teachers that you either love or hate. I personally did not care for him and could not wait to get out of his class. Everyone was having a hard time understanding the material this semester and maybe it was because he was too busy talking about his "Anthro Club." Not a fun class at all.
I absolutely loved him in class..his lectures were great, very interesting to listen to! It is very obvious that he is passionate about anthropology and knows the material! However I had a really hard time with the multiple choice tests..the vocab for the questions was ridiculous!!
he is a great teacher, very interesting and will keep you enraptured the entire class
Command of his field and lecturing skill. He presents his opinions not to force them on you, but so can confront your own. He is like the Colonel from "Most Dangerous Game" or GLaDOS- stacking the odds against you, thrilling in the hunt, then you strike him down and he just gives a thumbs up before vanishing in the mist to return in the next movie.
Very passionate and entertaining when it comes to his lectures. Every film he showed was incredible. Very interesting information with no tests and limited homework. I enjoyed his class.
If only I failed his class, I could of take it again the second time. His teaching is superb; he likes to be animated and project his voice to teach unlike other monotone teachers. Took it during early spring of 2009 and passed with an A. Quick pace, but I found it easy to learn because of his teaching and clarity. Take this class and learn.
Great class. Teacher is really knowledgeable and passionate about Anthro. Class is based on 4 essays, 2 of which you have to read aloud (a little intimidating). Thought provoking class and the teacher includes his own experiences in the lecture, along with a bit of comedy :) LOVED the class.
Professor Kary should wear a toga and have olive branches above his ears; he is a post modern Socrates. When Elias Kary speaks, people listen and people learn. He is witty and clever and one of the most encouraging instructors I have ever had. Take Anthropology and learn about your world. Professor Kary's course will change the way you see.
Very straight forward. Doesn't get off topic. Study hard for the tests which may be mulitiple choice or answer (or a combo of both). He offers a TON of EC at the end of the semester. DO THEM. He grades fairly easy on them. He also curves the test scores. Take good notes, and attend class. GRADING 3 exams(25 pts ea) 1 final (25 pts)[spring 2010]
The class began fairly well, but as the semester progressed it went downhill. Lecture time was wasted on Kary's narcissistic tangents about his "impressive" exploits or theories. On the upside (for some), it wasn't a very challenging class as long as one paid enough attention in class to write a neat summation of his blather when essays were due.
Pros: charismatic, challenging, funny, & has a passion for the subject. Cons: goes off topic about his exploits & gets some facts really, really wrong (like Cuba being majority Afro-Cuban). If you actually read the book and have a decent skill level of writing, it's an easy A. Interesting class, but just fact-check what he says.
He is a great teacher. I loved Cultural Anthro! When I took Biological Anthro, it was hard (different from Cultural) but still he made it really interesting! But book is required for Biological one! He is experienced. He would come up with something really funny during the lecture & slip the word sometimes, it's funny! He's AWESOME! :D
Kary is very intelligent and definitely loves what he teaches. His passion for anthropology makes his classes very intensive- don't expect to be able to space out. His tests were managable; skim the book before each test and review your notes. He tended to pick favorites (the people in his lab), and whenever I asked for help he was very curt.
Great instructor who is passionate and very knowledgeable about the subject. He is very committed to his students' learning and assists them throughout the entire process. Highly recommended. Read the book and take copious notes. Don't show up late the day any paper is due, especially the first one! Try to engage in class discussions.
he's a good lecturer. take good notes and read the textbook! then test will be easy. It could be challenging if you are a student who wants easy A. You'll actually learn in this class!! Loved this class, definitely recommend this class!! don't hesitate!!
Hands down the greatest instructor at MPC...i know thats not saying much, but prior to joining the class i had little interest in the subject now its all i talk about, your missing out if your don't have Kary as a professor
Tough class. The entire class is out of only 100 points, which leaves no real room to mess up. 5 tests - 4 throughout the semester, one final, 20 pts each. He offers extra credit on each (~3/4 points) but their tough tests so the EC is very needed. The EC lab assignments he gives at the end are more or less mandatory for an A. No homework.
super chill teacher. he is very funny and cares a lot about the subject. the first week, he tries to scare you thinking that the class is SUPER hard. it is, but if you listen to lecture and take good notes, you will pass. DO THE ERXTRA CREDIT. it helps a bunch.
Hes tough but easy to understand. The two problems are his tests don't relate that well to the material lectured or in the textbook. The other problem is you have to read your essays in front of everyone. I wouldn't recommend this class to those who have problems speaking in crowds.Otherwise a good class he knows his stuff.
The man is brilliant!
Kary is great! He is captivating in his presentations; certainly recommend him to anyone looking to further their education. This class is definitely NOT for the slackers, as it definitely requires some outside reading. His lectures are so clear though, so you really get a general understanding.
Best Professor I've had so far in college. Great knowledge of the subject, and he keeps you intriqued throughout the classroom with personal experiences. Your missing out if you haven't taken one of his courses yet. We're very thankful to have a Professor with this stature at a Junior College Level.
Great teacher. Enthusiastic, approachable, has set office hours and abides by them. Very passionate about the subject and conveys that to his students. I would take this class with him again.
Really engaging and fantastic teacher. He always made class interesting and exciting. Be sure to study for tests though! I would highly recommend taking his class to everyone!
Elias, is the best of the best. He is great at connecting with his students, engaging them with the subject and course material. He creates a positive working environment that enables dialogue between students and teacher. He is the BEST professor I have ever had, I highly recommend him to everyone.
Not only are his lectures captivating but his tests and study guides are always clear. He is madly in love with Anthropology and it shows. And he sure isnt hard to look at either. Favorite teacher of all time, by a flying leap
He is a great teacher. He is a funny guy, very smart and easy going class is fine i would take it over any day.
Very passionate and enthusiastic about subject. Makes what can be confusing material very clear and is approachable when you have a question. Class only out of 100 points, be sure to study for tests, and be prepared for a presentation and group project.
Kary is an awesome teacher. I absolutely loved his class and his lectures. He makes the class extremely interesting and really believes in his students. He is not an easy teacher, he definitely will make you work for your grade. Awesome teacher though!! I recommend everyone to take his class. Loved his lab as well!Great to look at too.
Kary was such a great teacher!!! Extremely funny with fantastic stories. His passion for his subject and sense of humor really allow you to take something from course even if you don't believe that we evolved from monkeys..
Kary's lectures are awesome!!!!!!!!!! He is very passionate about Anthro and it makes his lectures very fun and interesting. No seriously, the hour just flies by! Grade-wise, it's not too had to do well in the class, provided you prepare for the exams and put in effort in the group presentation. He also gives you extra credit opportunities :)
Great teacher, passionate about anthropology. At the beginning of the course he kind of makes it look harder than it is actually going to be. This is not an easy A but if you do you work and learn the study guide which he gives before every test you will be ok. Lenient when grading projects, tests are relatively straight forward. Take his classes!
Cultural Anthropology class was slightly different from Biological Anthropology class. Be prepared to turn in 2 papers and to present one of them and to do annotated bibliographies of assigned readings. Overall it was a very interesting class.
Great professor. Makes the class feel really short. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Great teacher. If you have the attention span required for a college level class and can remember what he says from his powerpoint notes (not that much information, fairly easy task) then you are set. I knew most everything required for the tests by his powerpoint presentations. His charisma and enthusiasm are appreciated.
Best Professor I've had EVER. Seriously, I can't go on enough about how incredible he is! Great knowledge of the subject, and he keeps you memorized throughout the classroom with personal experiences. Your missing out if you haven't taken one of his courses yet. MPC should be grateful to have a Professor with this stature at a Junior College Level.
He is so intelligent and knows so much about this subject. He makes his lectures fun and has a great sense of humor. I recommend him to any student that needs to take an anthro class. Doesn't hurt that he's very attractive!!!!!!
Kary is by far a great lecturer. The most admirable part of his class is his capacity to stay on topic and provoke good discussion. He gives good paper prompts and provides great preparation for them. Great professor and good sense of humor; sets an open class environment. Recommended!!
Took biological anthropology, it was incredibly interesting. Really engaging lectures. Overall though, a very difficult class. I did not miss a single class, took notes, did the extra credit, and scraped by with a 90. I do not recommend it for non-science majors and people that are lazy (you should know who you are). Lot's of studying!
Very Awesome Instructor!!! Very passionate on the subject and it clearly shows through his lectures. Attendance is crucial due to the class being fast paced. Didn't really use textbook because he simplifies it by presenting clear power-points. Doesn't assign homework but test can be somewhat difficult if you don't take the time & effort to study.
I took this class my first semester of college and although I got a B I would highly recommend any student considering to take this class be accustomed to writing papers. A good English background is a must. Kary is by far the coolest teacher just make sure you do the reading! His lectures are interesting and his anecdotes are funny.
Mr. Kary is just as amazing as Mrs. Kary. His lectures are great and always leaves you wanting more. I wish all my teachers could be as enthused about what they teach as him. His tests are no joke though, but definitely manageable if you take the time to review your notes. I recommend him to everyone I know.
I thought his Biological Anthro class was great, but man his cultural class is life changing. This class completely changed the way I view other cultures and brought me up to date on some of the serious issues in this world. Kary finds a way to make a 3 hour lecture fly by. The work is definitely challenging, but absolutely worth it. TAKE THE CLASS
Def one of the best professors at MPC. I would recommend taking the bio class before tackling the cultural, it is grounded and really helps in building a foundation for concepts, also gives you a chance to work on the AAA format he adheres to. Group project; I'm not a fan of speakinginteractivity, but if i can power through it you probably can too
You can't go wrong by taking Kary's classes, he's a refined lecturer and passionate about teaching anthropology. Lots of reading and writing, but assignments are well rounded and feel productive and structured. Emotional vibe & students tended to share a lot of anecdotes, but he was very patient and kind about it even when it cut into his lectures.
Class is interesting as well as engaging. Kary would involve everyone in the class and he would do his best to call you by your first name. I loath group projects, I am pretty certain that a dude who did nothing in my group got full credit, maybe a peer grading system? I really just showed up to class everyday, made an effort while there and passed
Most of the class is lecture and he does give you one or two group assignments towards the end of the semester. You have a lot of group activities in this class Never used the textbook that was required in this class
Kary's class is so much fun. He is an amazing professor. His class overall isn't too bad but I personally am not the strongest in sciences so it was difficult for me. His lectures are amazing though. I never missed a class!
Just as phenomenal as everyone said. Some of the best lectures I've heard. Incredibly passionate and sincerely interested in the subject he's teaching. Class requires hard work, but it is well worth it. Study hard and pay attention, don't miss any classes, and you're good. 10/10 would take again.
If you haven't taken one of Kary's classes you are seriously missing out. This class involves a lot of lecture, some big tests, and a few group projects. I took the accelerated 1/2 semester class and I recommend it. Kary has truly refined the are of teaching and inspiring. Attendance is important, but you won't want to miss a class anyway. The best
Obviously we all understand that Kary is a fantastic instructor. He is knowledgeable and passionate about world cultures. Hs lectures are very interactive and fun. This class consists of reading a lot and writing a lot. You have to present a few of your papers, but he grades on content not performance. Also, I recommend the 1/2 semester class.
Such a great professor! I'd one of the best at MPC. I recommend taking both if his classes and the half semester ones.
Great lectures, you should take note and pay attention to the italicized terms, it helps a lot with the tests, which are pretty important. There's a pretty big group project halfway through.
He's an amazing lecturer. It's obvious he's passionate about the subject matter, so the class is interesting as a result. Two exams, a few in class assignments and a group project. Pay attention to the slides online and the exams shouldn't be that bad. Final isn't cumulative. Fair grader.
Overall Kary is a great lecturer, he does an excellent job of condensing dense material into 50 minute lecture periods and his in class activities provide good application for the ideas learned in class. Although I am not big fan of his testing style which focused primarily on specific details rather than broad concepts, I would still recommend him
Great teacher. Very funny. I love potato.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Encourages participation in-class but doesn't require it. Incredibly knowledgeable if you have any questions that go beyond course material. Focus on the italicized terms in his lecture powerpoints when studying.
If you want an amazing experience take this class with Kary. I have taken 2 previous classes with Kary and I am telling you there is no better instructor at MPC. Your grade is based on projects and papers. Go to his lectures, not only bc they are vital to success but also bc they are fun. The best class I have taken at MPC. Plus you go camping.
His class is so good it's a must take. He's a really good lecturer and is just an overall super nice guy.
Elias is overall an awesome human being. I looked forward to his classes/lectures every week. He is charming, engaging, available, & sincere. Intense class content, critical thinking, participation required, 3 papers. His wit & candor help you through the tough subjects/assignments. Anthro+KaryGameChanger! Take ANY class. You'll love his style.
He is an absolute gem. His worldly knowledge pours out of him. You'll want to meet him for beers. His teaching style is far beyond community college level, but he chooses to teach there for the benefit of us. He is building the next leaders of the world with his inspiration. He encourages class discussion and shows respect to each individual.
This is my second class with Kary. He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Anthropology . He is really engaging while he is lecturing. It is important to try to keep up on the reading outside of class and participation in class is also crucial. Overall it was a very enriching class; I always looked forward to showing up.
Great teacher! He makes you care about the subject matter.
Very solid lectures, informative and enjoyable. No homework quizzes and exams important.
Amazing lecturer, very little written homework, test heavy.
Elias is honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had. He's passionate and engaging, very easy to listen to. I previously had 0 interest in Anthropology until I took his ANTH 2 class. I ended up taking his ANTH 4 class as well. He wants his students to succeed and makes it very clear that you have to work hard, but it pays off. Recommended.
Absolutely fantastic. One of the highlights of my college education. This guy is brilliant, empathic, and driven by a holistic approach that lights up this discipline and will--and this isn't hyperbole--change your life for the better. His lectures are electrifying. How is this man not chairing Anthropology departments at Berkeley or Yale?
Great teacher, knew what he was teaching and had an overall very easy to follow class. Take lecture notes pay attention and its an easy A
Loved his class, prepares you for the assessments well, tests are mostly fair, and the one group project is easy as long as your group communicates. Lectures can get boring, but he tries his best to entertain. Take his class, study the slides and any notes he gives you when there is an assessment, and it'll be an easy A. HIGHLY recommend his class.
What a class! Prof. Kary is a find, the guy knows biological anthropology and he is funny! Class was mostly lecture, but believe me, his lectures are great - even at 8am in the morning. One thing, this class is graded by a few assignments, but if you listen up you don't need the book. Highly recommend this guy! Sign up now for him!
Honestly one of the best teachers i've had so far. He is funny and relatable. I would defiantly recommend taking a class with him.
Professor Kary is extremely intelligent and very real. He understands the stresses students have and doesn't give tedious busy work. You are only graded on a couple tests and assignments. He gives study guides and notes, all you have to do is study and you'll be fine. His lectures are VERY entertaining, you'll love going to class. Highly recommend!
Professor Kary is one of the best professors I've ever had. He engages the class in his lectures and relates the homework well with the lectures. While the material of the class is also really interesting, he brings it to another level allowing his students to properly understand and develop a love for culture.
entertaining professor. However he is not up to date on recent discoveries in anthropology. Didn't really learn anything I couldn't learn in a two hour discovery special. He likes to talk about his travels to study apes. A lot. So get ready for that.
Not that I have taken classes with every instructor on the planet but Kary has what the best teachers historically have: passion and communication skills and knowledge. He is well qualified to teach at any major university. There isn't enough room to properly elaborate. Truly an amazing professor. Pay attention to his lectures. Ask questions.
I don't like social sciences class and so I went into this class with a negative attitude. After meeting the professor and being able to understand his demeanor over the first couple of weeks, I knew that this professor truly cares about his topic and pitches it in a way that is easily relate-able. Super friendly, easy to get in contact with.
Take this class you won't regret it! I learned so many things in his lectures. It is difficult if you have a hard time writing papers. Stay on top of everything, this class is very enjoyable.
Be expected to read a lot . I didnt mind the reading but he can come of as rude at times. Hes never much of a supportive instructor . I recommend taking a different instructor that actually cares to help students.
Amazing professor. I had multiple learning disabilities and he was very understanding. Very approachable.
Elias is one of the best teachers at MPC. This was my first anthro class and I learned a bunch of information. For this class there was no tests just projects and papers. GREAT TEACHER YOU WILL LOVE HIM
There was hardly any instructions, guidance, or even lectures (just presentations that didn't elaborate much, better to read the textbook). He only emailed us when he was unavailable for office hours (which happened A LOT). The subject is interesting but this class is as DIY as it gets. Honestly, I didn't want to put in the work if he wasn't.
Prof. Kary is cool. Just like any class. Just do the work. Straight forward class. I learned a lot of cool stuff.
Easily the best professor at MPC. Loves his job is super personable and gives really thought provoking lectures. I have nothing but nice things to say about Elias. He opened up a test one time because I realized my answer was wrong and let me re take it. Super cool guy will go out of his way for his students. Knows his science around the board.
I learned a lot in this course! The readings were straightforward, and so were the papers. I am now interesting in taking many more courses involving anthropology.
Basically one of the best educators that I have had in any school, having attended three colleges and taken college courses in high school I have had a lot of good, and bad, teachers. What you put into the classes is what you get out of them. He is very kind and understanding, more than anything he is passionate about what he teaches.
This class was one of the few I didn't really care about, but cared a lot about it by the end. The professor really cares about the subject and tries their best to answer questions as well as make students discuss. I took a lot more from this class than I thought I would at first. I would 100% recommend this class to anyone.
The class is very DIY as someone else stated. Not much to work with and you kinda gotta figure out a lot of stuff on your own. There's a lot of reading but the lack of work makes up for it, he's horrible at emailing back. Sent him 2 emails and completely ghosted me. I got ghosted by a professor.
10/10 interesting, great lecturer.
Super fun class! Honestly disappointed I don't need to take any more of his classes lmao. It's basically all lecture with 1-2 small weekly assignments and 3 total bigger discussion board postings. One of the easiest classes I've ever taken AND he made the material genuinely fascinating despite it not being even remotely what I'm interested in
I loved all his lectures! We had a few quizzes every week but they were fairly easy because it was open book or you just watched the video. I do suggest you do the discussion post or else you will not pass. I honestly thought about switching my major because of his class! He loves his job and you can tell.
