Great prof! He incorporates a lot of interesting ways to engage with the material, and he shows sincere efforts to help out his students. His TA on the other hand, is hands down the worst TA I've had during the three years at UBC... Marks way too hard... and really hard to understand...
Though he's a clear lecturer, he tries to cover too much. Most of the readings are quantitative, he recognizes this as a flaw but doesn't do much to change it. As far as tests go, he says you need to know general arguments, but in fact very specific material is required. Not bad per se, but the experience you get is different from what he promises
Most of his lectures don't flow and do not have cohesive points. Even though you are told that you don't need to know all the details for exams, a lot of details of class readings are expected in the exam. The amount of reading for his class were also more than other 300 level soci classes
His strength is make easy to understanding, but that's all. no depth in class. i can see his saying is sounds like professional, but his ppt slide dont have any depth and his vague grading in essay question was really made stubborn character.
Do not take this class. I am usually a B+, A student and he gave me horrible marks, and he wasn't very helpful at all either.
Elic is one of the best profs I have came across at UBC so far (am not 1st year although its 100 class), he shows that he cares about the learning of students. Course material was well explained in lecture and concepts delivered clearly. Expectation for midterm weren't very clear but TAs explained it afterwards so final exam was much better.
Very interesting lectures! He is passionate about teaching and sincere. He gives a lot of examples to make concepts easy to understand. And it's an easy and straight-forward course if you go to class and read all the materials. Definitely recommend.
Great lectures and very understanding when it comes to assignments. Test are a bit hard, and lecture attendance is pretty much mandatory as there's always stuff from lecture on the test.
I'm a soci major and took the year-long intro course with Elic. He knew what he was talking about and his lecture notes were clear. The paper topics were easy but my TA was a pretty hard marker. I struggled a bit with his exams; you NEED to study. Go to lectures, get the core concepts down early, and pay attention to the readings. You'll be fine :)
There were A LOT of readings every class. If you go to this professor for help, he's extremely good at explaining things. Very, very straightforward exams. Fill in the blanks notes for his slides in class. He makes it easy to pay attention in class.
Elic is awesome!!! He got me into sociology!! Easy maker! Really inspirational!!
Good prof. He sends us slides to bring to class- we fill in blanks. Tests are average to easy. Material for tests- 60% lecture, 40% book. Lots of overlap. He's very engaging. Class is interesting. He cares about the academic success of students. 1.5 hour class actually only just over 1 hour- he saves time at the end for students to ask questions.
very nice
Dr. Chan is very fun and engaging teacher if you pay attention. His voice can be kind of mono tone but he really cares about the material. If you go into the class with motivation and do most of the readings it will pay off at his tests and papers. Not terribly hard class if you attend and put some effort in.
Elic's lectures are really precise and thorough. He really knows his stuff and what he's trying to teach. He is engaging and will put a lot of thought into what he's trying to convey. He uses real life examples such as his own storieshis friends to showcase what he's trying to say. Go to class! It's really not that hard, and he is super helpful.
Was the first class I took when I was debating on whether I would major in Sociology. His lecture made me glad that I did. His lectures are very clear and its organized in a way that makes you understand. It's also engaging and he helps make taking notes easier in class. Expect a bit of reading, but awesome prof and awesome class!!!
He is a great prof. In each semester 1 midterm, 1 paper and a final. His expectations for each assignment are very clear. Practice tests. All of his tests are multiple choice, tf, and short answers. Shows you how you can make a future with the degree. A whole lecture on how to write a paper. He is ALWAYS willing to help you.
Elic is a really great lecturer. He's really clear in the class and what he's trying to convey. He will also tell personal stories that are very relatable to the lesson and he's got that dead pan humour going. I encourage everyone to take at least a class with him. He's very dedicated and is always willing to help.
Elic's lectures are very clear, and interesting- his expectations are unrealistic. He gives out 2 papers worth half your mark, which he is very helpful with. However his tests are extremely difficult. The non-cumilative final which was for 1/2 of the course consisted of 14 readings, some at 50+ pgs & variety of topics. VERY OVERWHELMING & UNFAIR!
Class was only attendance 2 assignments and 2 NONcumulative tests. He made the classes interesting and he gave a lot of practice assignments and practice tests so we'd be ready for graded work. If you keep up with readings and practice the assignments, not a hard class!
He explains why this class is relevant important for future use, whether it's for 300/400 courses, grad school, or careers in research. His lectures are very hands-on, which is great for learning about research methods. He's very clear with what he expects and how he grades. Great prof, would highly recommend and take a course with him again.
I have taken 2 classes with elic and honestly he's one of the best prof in the soci department. He engages with everyone in the class and tries his best to help everyone out. 2 midterms and 1 research proposal to do and a final exam. Tests are fair, must read the textbook. As for the proposal he wants it very detailed. Overall good prof!!
Funny, inspirational prof that keeps students engaged in lectures. 2 Midterms, 1 Paper and a Final. First midterm was easy (maybe too easy) that's why the other exams were a little tougher. He takes A LOT of exam questions from the textbook and YOU. HAVE. TO. GO. TO . CLASS or you seriously won't understand a thing.
Throughout my entire educational career, I have never seen an instructor as unprofessional as this one. Aside from the fact that his lectures are so long and tedious, and that he rambles on and on, assigns irrelevant terrible readings, etc. He is an overall terrible prof, and incredibly unprofessional. Doesn't care at all about his students.
his tests were ok but focused a lot on details you wouldn't expect to be tested (like in the readings). He's a decent lecturer but he is not accessible outside of class and he isn't good with replying to emails. It seems as if he doesn't really care about his students. The content was decent though and workload was fair!
Elic is a wonderful professor. He is straight forward (at times a little blunt) and does have some humour. HOWEVER, I could never take this specific course again. 10/25 (ish) lectures were group projects - this material was not testable. But, group project was only 10%. If you are new to sociology and want an "easy" course I would recommend it.
I liked Elic's sense of humour and his lecturing style, but I wouldn't recommend taking this course with him. A third of the course was spent doing in-class group presentations rather than him actually teaching course content. Even though not much content was covered, he was still very picky with his marking and the class average was quite low.
Awsome overall
Reply email slow or never reply your emails, doesn't really wanna help students who are confused, the lectures would be great if he can offer more help to students.
Very monotoned lectures. I only go to his class because he puts up slides that are half empty so you have to fill in the missing blanks from his lectures. Overall, it's just a boring class.
Elic chan is a nice dude, very helpful and inspiring to sociology majors. A friendly guy he will help you if u go ask for it. Just he's kinda sus he's late to class every now and then, hands out useless stuff and he usually looks pissed the first 1 minute of the lecture. hard to explain but he is kinda sus, but nonetheless a pretty cool guy.
I really don't understand the negative feedback Elic's gotten. You can tell that he's definitely on the students side, and tries to make things smooth and straightforward. I liked his dry humour and thought he made a really boring subject kinda interesting. Pushed back our paper date to give us more time, and no midterm or final - just 3 tests
1, he is a nice person. 2,what he texts is not what he teaches( most of them are from readings, but he never mentions on class...)
honestly i loved him as a prof and took 2 courses with him. his teaching style and sense of humour makes the class fun. exams may seem hard but it really depends on how much you study. they're hugely based off of readings more than lecture slides. the readings are ridiculously long but If you do them all, you can do well on the exams.
where do I start? this prof is honestly ridiculous. I can't believe i paid 500 dollars for this course. we did NOTHING and there was a period of 2 weeks where we had no class due to him cancelling it for one stupid reason or another. course content is ridiculously easy yet he manages to make it confusing. he acts like he doesn't want to be there
Readings were free on connect, but a lot of reading material and much of it was really difficult. Quiz on the readings was REALLY hard and on specific details. We had to write three short papers, do a panel discussion, and a group presentation. Hard seminar overall, but he was interesting and insightful in his lectures & discussion input.
He is pretty funny and lectures were definitely not dry. He assigns a lot of readings, asks specific SA Qs on them so you must know lots of material v well or get lucky with the Qs he asks. Makes you send the first page of every source you use for final paper. Made a 10 page paper worth 20%. As i'm writing this I realized I wouldn't recommend him.
Fun class, very interesting topic, we had 3 tests instead of a midterm and final plus 1 paper which is the only bad thing about this course he makes you find 10 resources and send him the first page of each one, also make sure you do the readings because there is something on the test included always.
You probably will love him and hate him in the same time. He gave amazing leature and he has good sense of humor. But, unfortunately he is irresponsible, often late to class and cancel class quite often. Never expect you can do well based on his leature. You need to read the textbook and he often test you things that he never taught in class.
He is really informative and knowledgeable. This guy teaches real stuff. He really wants to help you. Definitely a worth-taking class. You will learn and grow, realizing nothing is impossible to prove while using scientific research methods to actualize your ideas.
I felt like I didn't really learn in this course. It's a seminar so the students are the ones who are teaching each other. Elic didn't really do anything? It was a pretty easy A though - I felt like I didn't really have to work hard for these three credits. It was sort of fun since it's just discussion and only 1 10% quiz, so felt like could relax
Awesome teacher
The lectures are really straightforward and he does a good job at explaining the material. The midterms did seem to catch some people off guard with the difficulty level being higher than expected. Prof. Chan does make an effort to be accessible outside of class and you can tell he wants his students to succeed :)
Lecture notes were clear and concise, but attendance is necessary bc its fill in the blanks. class has 3 tests of the same length (non cumulative), and a paper. He tests on lecture material but also the scholarly articles that he assigns. really review them well bc they will be on the tests. Elic is super funny and an amazing lecturer!
In lecture Elic goes over his powerpoint slides which include filled-in blanks that you must fill in either by printing the slides or typing them in on your laptop. Every concept is straight-to-the-point, and easy to understand. The mc parts of exams were easy, written required more understanding (pay attention to the lecture examples)
He has not offered clear instructions for assignments and assignment examples. And he always left blanks on the lecture notes, so students must come to his class.
Dr Chan is a really nice person, usually shows up to class late but always adds in something to make it more interesting. His tests are super hard and very unclear on how to answer his questions. The paper I had to write was confusing since there was no marking rubric to explain what was needed.
Elic is pretty chill and he tried his best in a really boring course (research methods). His lectures are pretty dry and you have to do his fill-in-the-blank notes if you want to pass. Also you have to do all the assignments in order to pass the class so don't take the course if you aren't handing in stuff. His exams aren't too difficult.
Super engaging and knowledgeable prof, teaching a very interesting topic very well. Midterms, papers and exams were very difficult (which he does disclose and explain prior) and it's difficult to get a good grade: class average was about 62%. def do your readings which are an online textbook and show up to class to fill in the blanks on the slides!
I took this course with professor Chan online during the summer (COVID-19 time) his course was extremely flexible and his assignments were actually pretty fun to complete! (for example for one we made and administered a survey, and for another, we tried to look for jobs requiring a sociology degree)
Elic is a solid choice for 217. The course itself is a bit dry, but he tries to make the materials engaging and easy to understand. Do the readings. He gives a pretty good lecture on how research skills could be applied to the job market. This course kinda gives me a sense of security bc I know I can get a job with a soci degree.
The online term was extremely flexible and asynchronous. Every week, he sends us a few videos (usually from study. com), with 1 where he does an overview of the other videos and just to check in with us. The assignments were fun and weren't hard. The tests are pretty easy and you can command/control F on the open access textbook. Nice guy overall!
Professor Chan has been extremely understanding during this covid-19 pandemic. His assignments are very easy to get an A if you watch the videos and read the textbooks (I received a 100% on all of them). There is no mandatory attendance for his online class. He provides students with various videos on weekly topics. Tests are all multiple choice.
I took SOCI 210 with Dr. Chan last term. I was a bit apprehensive at first since sociology is not my specialty, but the asynchronous course was very enjoyable and manageable. He does test you on textbook material as well as the online videos he posts every week so be sure to stay on top of your readings. Very quick to respond via email.
Elic is your best pick for 217. He knows what he's talking about, seems really smart. Nothing wrong with his class other than the fact that his lectures are made up of random videos from other universities. But still, it works.
Never taken an in class course with him, but unless you're interested in completely teaching yourself the material, I would avoid taking him while classes are online. Very nice Prof., but referred to himself as a "facilitator" rather than a professor, and stayed true to that statement.
Easiest course I'VE ever taken but no live lectures. Lecture material was several short, concise videos each week, but sometimes different videos will define/explain the same concept differently and may be confusing. Assignments and exams were straightforward, however the mock exams are a lot easier and simpler than the actual exam (open book).
Great prof great class. Very understanding and quick to respond to emails, and he made good lecture videos but the ones he borrowed from youtube or wherever wasn't as great, sometimes contradictory. Should've also set live office hours. EASY assignments/midterm, moderately easy paper, challenging final. Tests are all MC (up to 8 choices)
Overall, very easy course. Not too many assignments and exams are straightforward. But it takes way too long for feedbacks to be released. Ive got my final grade at SSC but still havent received any feedbacks or grade for the term paper. I wonder how it is even possible.
The course was a breeze but I hated how he scaled us down with the final exam and term paper. His class videos were not necessarily interesting and tended to go quite fast, which made notetaking laborious. Honestly, I'd rather do more challenging classes than have my grade deliberately scaled down for the sake of "academic integrity" (avg was 69).
Elic is a decent choice for SOCI217. 2 midterms and a final with a paper and a few minor assignments. Heavy amount of textbook readings. He gave us in person lectures once a week and the other class was designated for posting pre-recorded videos. Although, these videos were posted very late at times and he was a little passive aggressive on email.
The tests were a joke, there was a real disconnect with what he lectured on and what he tested on. Beyond that, the exams felt like a psych evaluation, the wording of the questions was as confusing as possible with 8 multiple choice answers, with no real direction on what would be tested beyond "know the concepts".
an excellent lecturer, but slow to upload async videos. tests are an exercise in how fast you can ctrl + f your pdf of the textbook; lots of niche terms. definitely do the readings as much as possible. i appreciate the smaller assignments' focus on practical experience. wouldn't take again though, tests were too rough
In all honesty I really liked Professor Elic. He was super kind and made the best out of a hybrid class. Although the content on the class was hard, he made good sense of what he was trying to teach. The videos he posted were a great help as well. Overall a good prof and will be taking classes with him in the future!
Horrible. The class may seem chill in the beginning, but as the course progresses youll see what I mean. Tests didnt test knowledge, but rather how fast your internet is & your control-F abilities. Final made no sense & was obviously used as a tactic to scale us down (I went in w/ an A+ and finished with an A-). Elic doesnt care about teaching.
Took this class as an elective because I thought it would be relatively easy and I like soci classes. It was super boring and more work than it was worth (esp for an elective). The tests were multiple choice and open book, but to be successful at them you had to have read ALL of the textbook stuff and online videos were horrible & time consuming.
I was kinda shocked to see so many negative comments about Elic, because I had an amazing experience with him. Elic was funny during lectures, and he was very kind and approachable. He also made sure to clearly state his expectations for assignments and exams. This class needed quite a lot of work, but it was very interesting
Honestly great. You gotta read the textbook for this class, everything is based on it but its only 1 chapter a week and he goes over complicated parts in the lecture (textbook is very easy to understand). Midterms and final were open book, online, mcq and non cumulative so easy A. Material was very interesting and you can tell he's passionate.
If you like to read then Elic is your guy! I have never had a prof that is an actual joke and lazy. He doesn't have in-person lectures all his lectures are videos that he doesn't do himself, his test are multiple-choice but you have to pick up to 8 answers and IDK just don't take his class run away if you can.
very knowledgable + passionate about the subject, chooses interesting readings (which makes the longer articles a bit easier to get through). fair grader, but takes a while for marks to come back. good range of evals including group presentations, papers, quizzes. doesn't just recap readings in lecture so you actually need to read them!
Elic Chan gives you every opportunity to put in the work and see the good results. I was scared to take this class but Professor Chan had very clear and easy to follow lectures. I was dealing with personal issues that prevented me from getting a better grade but Professor Chan was the most understanding and caring professor I have had through uni.
Elic was the best lecturer I had all year. It sucks that all 3 of the tests and the research paper basically determines your mark. There's no participation marks or other assignments. Even though all the exams were open book, the questions were extremely different.
Elic is a great lecturer, however, he does not post online lectures fast enough for it being a fully online course. He uses recorded lectures from past years (like during the worst of COVID) so I am not sure why lectures are not released on time. This was also the case with the syllabus being released late, just a disorganized vibe overall.
Professor Chan has been quite an inconsiderate professor to interact with. Not only that, but lectures are almost never released on time even though they are pre-recorded, making all the students fall behind in class at no fault of their own. Would avoid at all costs.
Elic was the best lecturer I've ever had at UBC, he's funny as well as interesting mixing in games in class to keep you engaged. It does suck that 3 of the tests, 3 little assignments and the Course Project determines your mark. Even though all the exams were open book, the questions were extremely difficult.
Incoming SOCI 102/250 kids: this is your choice. This is your man who will get you into sociology and criminology. Craig and Chris respectively aren't in it for you, they're all over the place (especially Craig's 102). Neither will be easy, but Elic's class is sane. Chris is interesting, Elic is interesting AND clear/organized. Craig is neither
Just don't. His midterms/ final were so hard (I have a 86% average and found his class very hard) You'll never see your midterm and won't even get the mark back for 30-45 days even though it's online M.C. which makes no sense... His lectures were from covid times and you could hear his kids in the background....
Taking this class online was so bad. He would post the videos at such inconsistent times, some weeks missing it entirely and then next week having double. Same with the readings it would be locked and he would forget to unlock until the very end of the week sometimes.
The reason that I lost points was TA's grading, besides Elic himself was an OK prof. But as everyone said, he posts materials very late and never responds to emails. As an introverted student, his course structure was good. No group work, group discussion, no zoom... But if you're a person that passionate about learning, must choose another prof.
Terrible content, terrible lecturer. If you're passionate about learning, Elic is the last prossor you should look in to. Quizzes that are based off of one sentence of a textbook, and lectures that seriously don't add anything to the course. Elic is seriously my least favorite professor at UBC.
Elic is passionate and funny...when he is actually in the classroom teaching material related to this course. I took SOCI250 in Term 2 and I saw him on Week 1 and did not see him again till Week 5. He has pre recorded lectures from 5 years ago he uses. The online tests are WAY too hard, and the final is closed book! He is super late and unorganized
Is only in class once a week and the other day he recycles lectures from 5 years ago. Really vague instructions but pretty much impossible to reach by email, never responds and gives really difficult exams. Doesn't upload complete slides. Hes a good lecturer but so absent and disorganized it doesn't make a difference. Stay far away
LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS! I registered for this course thinking it was in-person however most weeks we had at least 1 online lecture, which are reused from previous years. He is a good teacher when present, but he is usually very hard to reach. There are 2 "quizzes" and they are VERY hard. He makes the TAs do the review sessions which were NOT helpful
No organisation. Impossible to reach beyond class. No office hours/email replies. Weeks to receive back grades. Reused lecture videos and slides from years ago. Blank slides, he's tardy. Could not care less about students—no practice questions, extremely hard quizzes, out of syllabus questions?Cancels class frequently. Only content was interesting.
I'm sure he's a good guy, but he's super disorganized. I'm taking this for my minor and honestly, this feels like too much for a 1st year class. I like that he gives examples but sometimes it feels like too many examples and not enough content, since like half of the exam content is from textbook stuff that is never even hinted at in class.
Worst prof ever. Late for in-person class. Assignment grading so late. No feedback on assignment or project at all. Lots of things not covering in class compared to the exam.
He seems like a good person, but not the best proff. Cancels class a lot, uses lecture recordings from years ago that aren't all that helpful, and lot's of textbook readings. I sent him three emails towards the start of the term, never heard from him. The TA was great though. The final was pretty textbook heavy. Not the best course.
Never responds to emails and cancels class frequently. When he does show up, he's late or uses the entire class time to go over pointless exercises for easily understood concepts. In all seriousness do not take him, I got an A in this course but I have never been so frustrated with the complete lack of care or effort put into a course.
Elic seems nice, but he is not a good professor. Half of the classes are either online or he cancels, using old lectures that are not helpful as a placeholder. The final project he said I would get at least a certain grade in office hours, was graded to be 10% lower than what he said, even after I added his suggestions. Final was horrible.
Cancelled class frequently. One class a week was online and were not the same quality as in person lectures - somehow worse. In person lectures were odd, spent a lot of time explaning examples which did not contribute to my learning and little time spent explaning concepts. Trying to review for this class was hell because his slides made no sense.
Elic clearly doesn't care about teaching or his students. He misses half the classes during the term, never responds to emails, doesn't hold office hours, and takes forever to return grades. He reuses old lecture videos and slides from five years ago and he's often late. He also cancels class all the time. Total lack of organization and support.
2 open book quizzes that are so difficult and one final. His lectures are very interesting. Assignments are easy. Exams and quizzes are absolutely awful and textbook heavy.
Going to be so honest, Elic is the most easy going professor I have ever seen. On the online midterms he sometimes gives the answers away in the descriptions. Hard part is how hard it is to stay engaged with his teaching but he does seem to have genuine passion in the course.
Goated prof. Enjoyed his lectures very much. I liked how he uses diagrams to explain various topics and theories. Course was easy if you have some background is in social sciences (anthro, econ etc). You need to read the textbook (open-source and free).
His midterms were horrible, made them extra difficult for no reason. Half the classes are online and he uses old recordings for them, so the slides he posted never matched. Most of his tests rely on the readings it's so pointless showing up to his class. The assignments are pretty easy though.
Elic was super understanding, and his lectures followed the textbook quite closely. He took random attendance throughout the course (5 times total, including discussions). His discussion sections don't take place every week, which is quite nice.
He is a good professor, but he can be a bit unorganized at times. He takes a long time to grade assignments or to get back to emails. His midterms are very textbook-heavy, so I highly recommend attending his lectures or taking notes during them.
