Exams are extremely difficult, doesn't explain concepts well, and you pretty much have to rely on the textbook to study for exams.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. Explanations are very unclear, and almost seems to take pride in making his exams difficult. Half the time, when a question is asked, he seems to prefer answering it "after class" or tells the student to come see him in his office. Do your GPA a favor and avoid this professor.
Wow, what can I say...I'm not sure if it's just because he's new to teaching or not, but St. Germain really struggled when it came to communicating new concepts to students. The guy's advice for studying was to do all of the textbook problems...that's it. Avoid this professor.
Orgo is a really difficult class and most of the people fail it. It's easy to make a new professor a scapegoat for a difficult class. The average between this class and the other professor are the same. Some people just don't understand that Organic isn't a class it's a Lifestyle. Also it's a weed out class, not an easy A.
Hands down the worst professor I have every had. Granted he was new and had no teaching experience, but he could not transmit ideas effectively at all. Orgo is hard, and teaching it to yourself out of a textbook doesn't help. Do not recommend.
This Dude is the bomb. Orgo is hard no matter who your teacher is. He was always helpful in office hours and he is really friendly. Much Better then the other profs you can take. studied around one hour per day and got an A-. He curves 12 points per exam and final grade plus a tone of extra credit. If you don't pass this class it's your own fault.
For a new professor not bad, pretty much teaches directly from the book, encourages practice problems from book but are not similar to exam questions! You must put in the hours for this class, it's not easy. He does curve, felt as if I could have studied more but still received an. Advice, review EVERYDAY, and do practice problems ! GOOD LUCK GUYS :)
I would not recommend this class with this professor. He does not help you if you need help. If you miss class you will be so lost with no help. I was not very happy taking this class
Teacher kept to the book, and didn't stray too are like other professors. You WILL have to read for this class if you take him. He does like to pride himself off of hard exams, but its doable. GO TO SI! I got a B in class only cause he curved a lot and the ACS was easier than his exam. Good luck. The class in general is pretty difficult.
Organic Chemistry is a hard subject but honestly if you just study you'll pass. People have to retake it so much because they didn't know how much study time the class requires. Germain is a cool teacher and he's pretty funny at times. He is fair with his exams and goes by the book. his lectures are pretty boring but he's fair. Would recommend.
Elijah is a solid professor who loves orgo, sometimes he goes waaay in depth on a topic that is like 2% of the chapter, but other than that his tests were much easier than you could have. Read before class, it helps. Lots of extra credit quizzes right from the book. seriously the hottest professor I've had at FAU.
I was very nervous about taking Organic Chemistry with this professor but I am so thankful I did. His lectures were hand in hand with the textbook, which made the exams fair. You obviously have to put in work outside of the classroom, in order to do well. The best part about this course was the SI and OC^2 , help was always there if needed.
Great professor. Organic Chemistry isn't an easy class, and it took me a couple tries to pass - but I passed with Elijah with an A. If its a choice between Elijah and any of the other professors, the obvious choice should be Elijah.
Organic Chemistry is hard, but his teaching style from his note-cards and on a whiteboard makes it harder.
Orgo is a tricky class but he is not terrible. He is super nice, good with curves and is willing to help during office hours. Also a very nice professor too. Take it with him. Either way, Orgo is going to be tricky, but take it with him!
Avoid him if you can. He is unprepared and his "notecards" are directly from the book. Doesn't go over OC^2 homework or any test materials after the exam. He does NOT curve - don't know what you guys are talking about. He didn't even have the ACS review book. I snuck into Roche's lectures and he actually went over problems. Get it together, FAU.
Pay attention and you'll do well. He's a great guy and cares to help you pass. Take him if you want to learn.
Orgo is a very difficult subject, and this professor doesn't make it easier. Self-study is a must, the lectures do little to prepare you for the exams. The class is graded entirely on 4 exams and a cumulative final, along with a good amount of extra credit (up to 10%). Make sure you know what you're going into. This is an extremely hard class.
Never thought I would have to retake a class but did with Orgo. If you have the option take St. Germain for Organic. Approachable and actually likes the topic it seems. Only complaint is him not answering some questions so he can get through the material. In the end he finished early and was going over random material for two days.
Orgo is not an easy course, Dr. St. Germain is by far the best professor I've ever had every since I step foot into this school. His exams are pretty fair, if you fail don't blame the professor, blame yourself. Everything is in the book, whatever that was explained in class is in the book and is mostly likely to be on the exam....
Hes decent at the most. There are 3 tests and a final. He teaches straight from the textbook. He does not really explain things well, so youre really on your own. Just study on your own as much as possible.
I love Germain. He's very nice and really relaxed. He's extremely fair on his exams. There is no curve, but up to 10% extra credit. I definitely recommend taking him! Go to SI and do the practice questions in the textbook and you'll be okay!
Germain is great. He is always fair on his exams. If you go to lecture, read the text, do practice probs, and go to SI you should get an A. Orgo is not has hard as they say it is if you actually try and put the effort in. Also, he's not bad to look at so enjoy.
Professor St. Germain was okay. Even though he teaches from the textbook, his explanations are either helpful or not, depending on the topic or learner. I spent most of my time learning on my own. And even though he gives extra credit, don't rely on it entirely. This is Organic Chemistry. You have to work for it.
You need to read each chapter in the book thoroughly. Just listening to his lectures in class wont help you one exams. This class easily takes over 15 hours of studying a week, so make sure your other classes are easy. Order the book a few weeks early so your'e a chapter ahead on the first day. Falling behind even slightly will leave you failing.
Organic chem is a beast that you must study in advance for. Germain isn't the best teacher. He is not very animated in class so it is very easy to drift off. Make sure you attend SI for this class. The tests are altered end of chapter questions so the textbook is a must. HW is extra credit and I highly recommend completing it.
Dr. Germain does a great job explaining material in lectures. However, you have to put in serious effort to do well in this class. Read the text ahead of lecture, do as many problems you can, and utilize his office hours w/?s. Germain is very patient and gives thorough explanations so you understand. I would take him for orgo 2 if he taught it!
Dr St Germain is a good professor, but he is as low energy as a Staggered Newman Conformation (youll get the joke after taking orgo) . Do all the homework extra credit and try to do well on the quizzes and you will be fine. Pay attention on the tests i made stupid mistakes that really hurt my grade. Do as many SI sessions as possible
He isn't mean or a bad professor he's just really bland at explaining things and very monotone. Organic Chem is hard enough and he isn't very helpful with it as you'd think he would be.
Organic Chemistry is hard. SI leaders like dervins make it less hard. You cannot get behind in this class. Do all the extra credit. Final is really hard because it is standardized
This class is HARD but not impossible to pass. Professor is not the best but this is a subject that is to be self taught. Practice end of chapter problems because they are very similar to test and quiz questions. Goodluck!
The material is hard, the teacher cant really help. So make sure you put in all the time you have, meaning work less and focus on this class FROM THE BEGINNING. The passing rate is bad, so dont get too shocked. I worked my butt off, but i definitely started a little too late. So make sure to put in the work, orgo is one of the in undergrad hardest.
Doesn't know how to teach. He's a lot nicer than many professors, so that's good I guess. Doesn't curve exams, so don't expect what happened in gen chem 1 and 2 to happen in this class. Almost withdrew because I knew I'd end with a C (I am an A student and came into the semester with a 3.9) but didn't want to go through this class again.
Awesome professor. Really cares about his students and everyone complaining about him probably didn't put in the work. The course itself is hard and designed to be a weed out course. St. Germain was awesome at teaching the material.
He is the very BEST professor ever. He is a real gem at FAU. You dont need to go to SI or OC2, waste of time. Everything you need to know, he teaches in detail so everyone understands clearly. He also curves. He genuinely wants his students to succeed. If you have a problem just go to his office hours he is happy to help. He knows his stuff.
Germain is a great orgo teacher, he definitely knows his stuff . Honestly this class is totally doable if you put the work in, don't expect to be able to not study and still get an A. Curves every exam and offers a lot of EC. Do ALL of the end of chapter problems before the test ( i got an A on all exams doing this). Put in the work from day one.
Dr. St. Germain is a great professor. OChem is a beast, but it's very easy once you practise enough. I went in unsure what the hell I was getting myself into, but now I absolutely love Ochem! YOU NEED THE BOOK - do every single problem within the chapter and end of the chapter at least thrice, get a model kit and you should be set. Good luck, bruhs
There are extra credit quizzes and extra credit homework. The material can be hard. But i think this was easier then gen chem cause there is no math involved. Do the problems in the book cause his test is basically that.
I'm not going to sit here and complain about how awful this class was. It's a difficult course and you're basically on your own. READ the book and practice problems, do ALL the extra credit, Do the best on exams 1&2 because exam 3 and ACS final are the hardest(30-50% class avg). hire a tutor or use clutch. study atleast 2 hours a day!!!
Study at least 30 hours a week to pass the exams. St. G is a nice person, but he is horrible at teaching. You can see he has a passion for orgo, but a lot of the material he teaches goes over students head. You have to read the book and do practice problems. GO TO CLASS! Some hard problems on the exam are usually stated at the end of chapt lecture
Orgo itself is hard but he couldve done more to help his students. Horrible
Orgo is not as bad as you've been told, but you MUST make SI and tutoring your best friend. Pick an SI leader and go to every session, then pick a couple tutors and go to all of their sessions. Orgo is a lot of practice, but it's not hard if you put in time. Don't rely on lecture to teach you and then not look at the material until the test day.
I had to retake this class. It is so hard, prepare yourself. And he doesnt really teach, you have to teach yourself. Make sure you go to SI and do all of the extra credits. Youre gonna need it.
This professor is very good. It's organic chemistry so people don't study and blame the professor. He explains concepts well! Just try your best on extra credit quizzes, go to SI, OC^2, and tutoring and you should get an A. Clutchprep is a really good resource and don't cram! It's not the beast people often describe.
You need to attend SI & tutoring in order to do well. The class sizes are huge and there is no way that the professor can attend to each student. It is really up to you what grade you want to receive in the class. However, St. Germain is approachable and will help you if needed, just go to his office hours. I really liked this class and I hate chem
Okay this teacher is pretty straight forward, Anyone making him out to be the greatest teacher ever is full of it and anyone saying he is terrible probably just didn't study. Requires full attention for this class but soo many resources out there to study for this class. Not easy but with Solid amount of work, your almost guaranteed a B in class.
Boring and doesn't teach well at all unless you've already taught yourself everything and just go to class to review the material. I stopped going to class unless there was an EC quiz (every week) because his lectures were not helpful at all. Just use outside sources for help if you really want to learn. Also he never replied to my emails..
Doesn't care about his students. He doesn't respond to emails if he doesn't feel like it, and is generally cold and rude. I'd suggest passing and moving on to the next class.
Orgo is very hard especially online, hes average overall, however I learn more from SI sessions and YouTube videos. I have a B plus and the semester ends in a month. Overall if you put in time and effort you should be fine.
Orgo is really challenging especially when taken online but this Professor curves almost every exam and he offers weekly extra credit quizzes that really help your grade. After the final I had a B plus in the class but after he put in the curves I jumped to an A-. This class requires a lot of work and studying but isnt impossible to do well in.
St Germain made orgo soo easy. Theres a ton of extra credit and his lectures were good. For studying, tutoring and the David Klein organic chem as a second language helped me the most. The material is hard but nothing you cant do well in!
Dr. St Germain was such a good prof. He explained orgo 1 very well and gave a TON of extra credit. Exams were ok, you need to know the stuff decently well for them. Make sure you go to SI and do a ton of practice problems. If you put in the work, it's really not a tough class. The easiest chem class I've taken so far!
Orgo is hard but Germain does everything in his power to make sure you succeed. There's a ton of built in EC. I've personally never had an issue reaching him. It's important to remember that he's juggling 600 students at a time. He's super sweet & generous with his time. Go to SI & tutoring. Make an honest effort & you'll do well. He's a gem.
Orgo is v hard, but Dr. Germain was a good professor & the course was fair game. Read the textbook & PRACTICE as many problems as you can. Take advantage of SI & tutoring. There are lots of extra credit quizzes that can help your grade.
Lectures were a bit fast-paced but he explained concepts well. Pay attention to the examples as they can come up during quizzes. Do your best on the first exam and try to score high on the extra credit quizzes. Orgo is a tough class, but don't let it discourage you!
Honestly if you have a choice take someone else (which you prob dont since FAU science department is trash) Homework is sooo long and a waste of time. He will give you 85 problems for 10 points. Grade is practically quiz/test heavy. I hated this class. Never had a professor that horrible.
Orgo is really hard but he is a really caring professor and wants you to do well. SI sessions and tutoring are a lifesaver for this class I lived in this to pass it. While lectures can be boring he does go over questions that are very similar to what's on the test. People give him bad reviews but I think he's a good teacher it's just a hard class.
Decent professor, but difficult class. Its hard but take advantage of SI and the EC. EC totaled 100 pts so it can really help your grade. Exams are curved and a lot of hw was due weekly. The exams are similar to quiz & chapter problems so prioritize those when studying. Exam 3 was brutal, focus on exams 1&2 so you can afford to possibly fail it.
Tough course, bad structure of course. He uses a different textbook to teach which turns out to be an outdated book from the 80's. Multiple times in the course students oppose his teachings based off what our textbook says (which is up to date), and answers saying he's only going off the book he uses, and proceeds to not tell us what book he uses.
A good professor cares a lot about the students. Easy to approach if you have an issue. Exams are a little hard but it's organic chemistry what do you expect. Will go over the exam with you if you go to office hours so you can see what you messed up. Exam 3 is a bloodbath. Take plenty of notes in lecture and read the book. Quizzes are extra credit!
Orgo is already an extremely difficult class itself, be prepared to study. Lectures are not really helpful, you're better off studying on your own along with SI. He does not respond to emails. Quizzes are extra credit but can still bring down your grade if you don't pass some of them. He's the main teacher for Orgo chem so you don't have a choice.
Good professor fast class a lot of extra credit. Heavy lectures.akong with test.
I really liked Dr. St. Germain. I did think some of his lectures were a little confusing, especially around the time we started exam 2 material; however, organic chem is just a tricky subject. The class is much more manageable because of SI/YouTube resources and there is extra credit offered through quizzes. He cares about his students.
This professor is amazing!! I am in his class now and have an A. Organic chem is hard in itself but he does everything he can to explain in the best ways possible. I was scared coming into this class, but he has made me think of organic chem in a completely different way. Also if you don't understand a concept, YouTube is your best friend.
The homework for this course is ridiculous. 10 chapters, some 80 questions long, 6+ parts each. You spend hours on the homework. Do the quizzes, they can boost you a whole letter grade. Even though the hmwrk was a lot, it boosts your grade alot. Lectures are boring and he never responds to emails. Takes questions from txtbook for exam! GO TO SI!!!!
This professor is so sweet and caring. He tries his best, but sometimes lectures are confusing. If you go to SI, you will be more than ok. I was terrified to take this course but I ended up passing with a high A. Exams are straight forward and he curves them. I never got anything less than an 87 on his exams. GO TO SI!! That is the key.
The only thing that made me pass this class were hw's, the extra credit quizlets, and prayers. He can be a bit vague on his lectures so definitely go to SI because they'll help. Also try to study a LOT so you can pass his class. He does curve his tests but not so much and he is very respectful to his students. Good luck!!
The homework was tedious and nonsensical (I only did half of it). I didn't go to SI. And I completely flunked the first Exam... I was debating whether to withdraw. But I decided to start trying and aced every Exam after. The Final was straightforward, just study previous exams and you'll ace it. The professor is cool and chill.
I finished with an A but it wasn't because of smartness, but hard work. Countless hours was spent at tutoring and SI with Chris for this class. The quizzes helped a lot, so try to thrive on them to get the MAX points. DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS. DOING THEM WILL HELP U! I stopped going to lectures after exam 1 and relied on tutoring & SI.
This class overall is generally a tough class. Dr. St Germain tried his best to explain things, but I struggled a lot. SI sessions definitely helped, but not enough for me to fully understand. The extra credit saved me from failing. Also sucks at answering emails, he never answered a single one of mine the whole semester.
He uses his quizzes in his exams, so I was set up to pass just by using those to study. He used homework as extra credit, so that was a huge bump at the end of the year. He's a solid teacher, but be prepared to study and cry a lot. Good luck!
this class is just a very hard class, but professor germain tries his best to explain. honestly though, his lectures did not help me, I went to SI a few times but mostly leanred material on my own on youtube "The organic chemistry tutor" homework very tedious and does not help- nothing like the test questions
Possibly one of the best professors I've ever had. Organic chemistry is hard, but Dr. St. Germain does an excellent job at explaining and giving practice problems to prepare you for his test. He's very sweet and will always answer your questions!
If you are indecisive about taking this class, still TAKE IT! If you are a stem major, you can not avoid this class. I obtained an A in this course because I studied a bit every SINGLE day. Chris will be your lifesaver for SI! I used Chad's Prep and Orgo Chem Tutor on YouTube as well. YOU CAN PASS! You just need to dedicate a lot of time to it.
The class is very difficult but that's Orgo: its notorious for being extremely tough. Dr St. Germain however made the material easier to understand. SI is a MUST in order to do well and pass. Attend every session. WileyPLUS HW that is not bad if done helping each other with problems due at end of semester. 3 exams and ACS Final. Great class!
Organic chemistry is a tough class in general, but he is very knowledgeable while being fair. The exams count for like 66% of your grade. He does give extra credit which boosts you about 10%. As long as you show up ready to learn, go to the free resources (SI and tutoring), you should be fine but beware of the homework and the ASC board final!!
Easy class those who complain don't put the work in!! Nice professor but never answers emails & makes quite a few mistakes on quizzes. Lectures r recorded which is great & all quizzes r extra credit! Orgo is a game its rly just what u make out of it. Watch youtube vids & study everyday & u will be fine! Not as terrifying as people make it seem.
Probably the best person at FAU to teach Orgo 1. He's not the best at lecturing and covering all the material (you definitely have to read the textbook / surf youtube ahead of time), but he designs the class so that your grade reflects your effort put in. 10 Extra credit quizzes coming out to about 10% of extra credit. If you're worried, u'll b ok.
There is so much extra credit offered in this class that it honestly makes a huge difference. Dr. St. Germain can get off-topic, however he does offer both in-person and zoom options for the lectures. And the zoom is recorded and posted on Canvas. Homework can be challenging, and don't let yourself fall behind on them.
You wont know what your grade is or if you're even passing until after you take the final exam. Terrible terrible terrible grading system, what you see in canvas is not anywhere near accurate.
you dont know what your actual grade is until after the final which is so annoying because you have no idea if you're even passing or not, he's lazy with exam questions and repeats a lot of them from the practice exams, SI helps but only with chris, i stopped going to lecture the 2nd week because he posts them on zoom, don't fall behind on homework
He is a decent professor. He is good at teaching the material and promoting support services for the course. He records his lectures, so although it is recommended to be there in person, it's not strictly required. You can also get a good amount of extra credit, so if you do badly on a test, you can still get back up.
1st time taking the class. Make sure to do extra credit for the course (quizzes included). Try to get 100 on the hw's. Also, I personally didn't use the textbook. The class does require a bit of studying to do decent on exams. I'm not sure why but grading got messed up w/ exams, few wks to get grades. Don't know final grade until end of semester.
Orgo is always going to be a hard class, but he made it harder somehow. NEVER responds to emails about anything, had to reach out to the course administator if I needed something. Lectures were not horrible, but I learned better from videos online. Do not take orgo with him if you can avoid it.
This was a difficult class that was test heavy but as long as you study and ATTEND SI you should do well. Could've gotten an A with all of the extra credit he gives but got lazy towards the end. 20% of the grade is homework, 80% is tests, and 10% extra credit on top of that. I recommend taking him over the other professors.
Homework was the worst part of this class.
Honestly, 20% of homework is a blessing. No other university in florida does this for organic chemistry. Exams are similar to the practice exam and the homework assists with the mechanisms he teaches in class. Attending in person is optional as he also live recordings on zoom. He's just a chill guy, what can I say.
Orgo could be intimidating but this class is VERY doable. Would 100% recommend Chris for SI. Gives a lot of extra credit. Be aware of the homeowork but keep up with it and take advantage that it counts as a test grade because it will help your average in the end.
Professor was great. Recorded all lectures on zoom which helped me because orgo is tough and I needed to replay the videos a few times. I was lost in this class most of the time but passed with an A because of the extra credit quizzes. This was a difficult class for me to understand but professor helped make it more enjoyable the best he could lol.
Only has a bad rating because everyone fails because they do not do their due diligence with this class. Actually a gem at FAU. Would recommend him to everybody. His LaCroix and suit combo every day in class was always nice to see.
Orgo is doable but he somehow makes it 10x harder. He makes the class impossible for no reason. Uses a different textbook than the students. No solid lecture material. No powerpoints, just scibbles on the board. Disorganized. Take at PBSC with Chow. I studied for so many hours, tutors, and SI. Its not you, its him. He is tenured and does not care.
Dr. Germain is a GOAT. I've never seen a professor so passionate and informed about his subject. The guy literally knows everything and will just make examples on the spot based on questions asked. He gives so much extra credit that my grade before the final was a 116%. I also have to mention the SI guy Chris. The dudes a beast. Don't go to Aliyah.
He is a good lecturer bad communicator. This course requires you to put all your effort in to earn a passing grade.
I almost failed this class when I took it with someone else, but when I took it with him I ended up getting a much higher grade. He explains everything clearly, his lectures are great, and he posts helpful materials. The extra credit actually makes a difference, and the homework gives multiple tries so you can really learn the material. Great prof.
Literally the best orgo professor ever. He gives weekly extra-credit quizzes, homework with multiple tries, and posts every lecture so you can review easily. Always teaching, always helpful, and explains concepts so simply. You can go up anytime with a question and he'll break it down.
Best professor I have had. Homework takes time, but multiple tries make it fair. Exams are clear and reasonable, and he provides plenty of practice problems. He posts lectures, teaches clearly, and truly helps you learn. Amazing class and an even better professor.
awesome bald man with big biceps.
As someone who struggled a lot in gen chem and thought I'd never do well in chemistry, he's truly a gem at FAU. I actually learned and enjoyed the class. Great lecturer and provides practice exams very similar to actual exams. Lots of extra credit to help your grade. If you do your part and follow along, you WILL learn and do well.
Best professor ever. I didn't understand chemistry at all before, but he explains everything so clearly. Practice exams and homework are super helpful (long, but worth it). You'll only fail if you don't put in effort or watch the lectures. He knows orgo is tough, but he teaches it so well.
Best prof ive had at fau. best u can get for such a hard class. gives practice exams that are very helpful and similar to exams. 10 ec quizzes that help. records his lectures. actively engages w students in class. curves every exam and final grade. hw takes ages to do. great prof but the course itself is still hard so study! wish he taught orgo2.
Great Teacher for learning Orgo. Made it super easy. The first couple of chapters go over stuff you learned in Gen Chem, and everything else is new information. Never went to lectures, but you need to watch the lecture and take notes if you want that A, dont only rely on SI Sheets. Quizzes are extra credit. Homework is a lot, so start early.
