great professor, teaches very nice and clear. NO surprises learned a lot in her class
She is excellent. Put it this way she gave 3 extra credits(She obviously wants everyone to get an A!) Very insightful class. I learned so much. She's clear and very precise.
A very nice lady always there to help you. She gives a lot of quizes but not hard at all. You need to read the book :)
Professor Gareis is really nice. This was the first time she taught this class. We had quizzes every week and at first it was hard to understand what she wanted on the quiz. The class was really fun. No textbook required
She is nice, but she gives to much homework. However, you will get an A at this class. She is very helpful. Kind of crazy, but it's her attitude that makes you laugh until you can finish laughing about her jokes. Come prepare with your speech visual aid, research notes, bibliography, everything.
She is very nice, a great professor. Cares about her class. She does give many assignments group and individual. She grades quite hard, but if you follow her requiresments exactly you won't have a problem. There are weekly quizzes posted on Blackboard that are open book.
Very nice woman. She wants you to do well and is helpful. There are weekly quizzes. Not hard if you read the text. She grades hard, but mainly gramatical stuff like spelling and punctuation. As long as you do the work and follow her guidelines it's an easy class.
Great professor. Really interested in the subject, gives a lot of work but the point of the assignments is to really teach you - plus there's no midterm or final exam. She's way too soft on the annoying, disrespectful kids who like to take advantage of her ...
She assigns a lot of work for this class but i've learned a lot from it.I don't really understand the kid who posted before.I don't believe anyone takes advantage of her at all.She is such a nice person and you're making her question her own kindness(she reads this site you know).Shes the sweetest.
She is one of the nicest professors ive ever had -she does give a lot of work but most of it is easy and you actually learn something by doing it - shes so sweet and patient..definitely would take her again
The best prof. i have had at this school so far. She does want her students to do well. A good amount of work, but it is fun and worth it. A great class to take. Yes she does give extra credit assignments. Strict with grammar mistakes and with talkative people in class. Would recommend to anyone easy to get an A if you are willing to work.
Excellent professor!!! A job well done!! Make sure you do your homework on time. She will be there for you until the last day of class. Read the chapters carefully so you can do her quizzes well. The quizzes are sometimes tricky. No need to fear!! If you do your work you will certainly get an "A".
The best professor I have taken. She is very passionate about her job and expects the same from students. She is very nice and does take attendance. It is true, she is a hard grader and don't even think about giving a paper late, is 10 points off. She does give extra credit and quizes every week. If you read your textbook you are fine. Easy class!!
She is not as nice as she seems! I got a A on her midterm and a A- on her final persentation and she gave me a B+.. She gives a lot of work, and a quiz every week! She is a very nice person,a nd she cares about her students.. but don't let the niceness fool you!
COMMUNICATION
just do whatever she requires, she is very laid-back professor, gives quizzes after every chapter in readings, but is very easy when it comes to the gradings.
Sometimes fun sometimes very boring class. Not hard one bit, she isn't THAT easy I would say 3.5 out of 5. We had online chapter quizzes open book very easy, be on her good side and she will grade you a little higher on your presentations unfortunately she didn't like me much and I should have got higher but O well she likes to favor the kiss asses
Do your work and participate. Everyone's said what she requires. This professor will not let you give up. Very detail oriented (read: anal). Overall a great professor with lots of knowledge in this subject.
4 projects - -you've to put pen to paper - - as well as 12 Quizzes (Every chapter of the book)-- along with GATE KEEPER of your Chapter---plus BIG Presentation--Dam tough class-- PHD``
that girl fails to remember to state the final project of the class, where you have to put in writing 5 pages on five different topics.
Best professor I've had. Always there to talk to you (you can even call her at home!). A+
The discussions are great. Students get to facilitate their own groups. It's the first time that I seriously talked about culture with students from other backgrounds.
Prof. Garies is sincerely concerned about the students. She lets you submit drafts and gives you feedback, even before things are due. This course has a globalization debate. Great!
Knowledgeable and personable. Great class!
Important subject matter. Interesting class. Prof. Gareis was very well-prepared and helpful.
Very helpful for ESL students!
do your assignments EXACTLY how she wants it and you will get an A++. She is very particular about how she wants the hw. learnt alot
Great Professor. She was so helpful in the projects she assigned. I enjoyed this class. I wish I was still in baruch so I can have another class with her. Learnt alot
Amazing professor for the comm. capstone! Had a lot of fun in the class. Just do everything required (on time) and come to class (attendance is important), take notes for quizes and easy A. Such a sweet lady and so understanding, takes her work very seriously, TAKE HER if you can! :-)
She is such a sweet lady. She cares about you and, unlike other profs, is not out to make you miserable. The capstone was fun and engaging. Attendance is important since there are no books and not much ppt. Quiz every 3 classes, your own presentation, paper (basically a written version of your presentation), informal group presentation. TAKE HER!!
She's a very nice lady. Her class is very interesting and you learn a lot about the topics she picks for the class. Be prepared to take quizzes online every week, even though the book is a bit boring. She's very intelligent, and helpful!!!
Very nice lady. This class requires a little more than other COM classes: 1 indv. presentation with a paper in which u have to follow some guidelines, group presentation (fun), journal entries, and quizes every week that were kinda tricky. Easy if you do everything as she says and get in her "good" side. Attendance MANDATORY!!!
Excellent, extremely organized professor. Kind and interesting. Also cares about incorporating students' experiences. Highly recommended!!!
she is a very nice lady. this is her first time teaching this course so it was a bit unorganized. 2 super easy projects. no tests. weekly online quizzes that you can average a 70 on without ever reading the book. one mandatory discussion moderation is the only annoying part of the course work. oh and she requires you bring the book to class. wack
Really nice lady and understanding. Very knowledgable of the topic. You have weekly online quizzes and group discussions. It is a hybrid course so only had to go to class once a week and the other day was online. We had a buddy project which was pretty easy. With a little bit of work you can get a good grade. Would recommend!!
Took her for group communication. It was her first time teaching the course and she did her best job at it. So nice and taught the class in such a fun and entertaining way. If I could, I would take her for every course haha.
A true gem of a professor who loves what she does. Highly recommended.
She is very enthusiastic. Discussion board comments every week, quizzes every week and a couple of group projects with a partner. It may sound like a lot, but they are more or less easy and you need the textbook, especially for the quizzes. Easy class, fun teacher. Would love to retake it if I could.
Ok professor. shes a nice person but very strict grader. projects are easy but writing is hard since she takes one point off for every grammatical mistake. quiz every week. only take if your a great writer.
She is actually a pretty easy professor. There is a quiz every week which do not get involved with the classwork often which is annoying, but grading is very easy and as long as you attend and do the work reasonably well you should get an A- or A
Really really great professor. The class itself is incredibly easy. Quiz every week, some writing assignments and a video project. All in all, a great and intelligent professor. Whenever I need help I can just shoot her an email and she responds almost immediately. Shes one of the best professors.
GREAT PROFESSOR! Very organized, always answers e-mails. Quiz and discussion board every week, but they're pretty easy. Some journal articles and projects due throughout the semester. Easy class all in all if you don't fall behind with all the work. She's a very sweet women, i would definitely recommend taking this class.
Workload is huge, almost overwhelming. However, they are all very easy assignments. Time consuming, but easy. Professor is very organized and clear. Amazing lectures!! Too bad we only get those once a week (yes, we only met in class once a week, except for the first and last week).
LOVE HER! She is an amazing professor who clearly loves her job and most importantly, she is a such a sweet person. There might be a lot of little assignments but overall, they are all reasonable.
Cannot think of a more straight-forward, "follow the syllabus and you'll get an A" teacher. She is extremely clear on what she expects out of you and the online videos she presents the class material in. A lot of reading and work for an elective, but she did cut down the requirements for the final project when students mentioned it. TAKE HER!
Took the online International Business Communications course and really enjoyed it. It is a lot of work (two quizzes each wee, discussion boards and other large projects) but interesting material. I learned a lot and really appreciated the professor's dedication and enthusiasm about the subject.
This professor is not easy. She focuses so much on grammar and spelling, which really bothers me because English is not my first language. So meticulous, that overall this seemed like a grammar class. She would take so many points off for grammar and spelling. I think it was not fair for those of us who English is our second language.
I'm taking this class already and I would say this class is ONLY easy if you follow her guidelines and if you are attentive in her lectures. I recommend getting the book because it will be very helpful in weekly discussions and quizzes. This course doesn't melt your brain like other courses offered in Baruch but it sure requires devotion and work.
One of the easiest classes I've taken at Baruch. Hybrid class, only show up to class once a week, and rest online. Weekly online quiz, easy just have textbook with you. Weekly online group discussion. The partner project is fun and interesting, you learn about each others culture. As a prof she is wonderfully nice. If you can take her, DO!!!!
Good course. Good professor. She could do for some minor changes but she pretty much sticks to her syllabus and gives plenty (uneeded) opportunities for EC. Hybrid class: Only in class once a week. Weekly quizzes online (open-book) and weekly group discussion. One buddy project with 3-4 different parts. You need good time management. Easy A.
Don't believe the post below. This class is not easy. The prof makes you work for it. You must read the textbook to do well on the quizzes, and the ethnographic buddy project takes effort and time--but is also fun. Careful: This is a hybrid class (it's half online). You must have self-discipline or you will fail. The prof is nice!
There's always something due online, like literally every day there is something due online. You will receive emails from the professor non stop "this is due, that is due" (at least she does this). It's not hard subject matter, the way she structures the class is just unbelievably convoluted. Non stop use of blackboard etc
The professor is super organized and very nice. The class is hybrid and part of it (discussions) take place online. This takes some getting used to, but she explains the process in detail. You have to read the textbook and take notes on the lectures for the quizzes. There is a cultural buddy project that's fun. I learned a lot.
I couldn't think of a way to make this class more time consuming. I'm telling you this class is more time consuming than cost accounting. I agree with the comment below about the course being convoluted. It's really borderline non-sense. Try to take this class with a different professor unless you plan on being on blackboard 247.
I love this class! The professor is nice, and the topics valuable. All assignments come with a handout that explains everything. If you read the textbook and follow the handouts and the course calendar, it's easy to get an A. Take her. She's great and accessible . . . will answer emails if you have a question even late at night. One of the best!
I'm not sure where to begin, this course is extremely difficult if you are working and taking other classes. You can not do all your work in the same dayconsecutive days, not because the amount, this is the way the course is structured. If you do all of your "posts" in 1-2 days you receive a failing grade. Really throws off workschool balance.
There's only one lecture a week (hybrid class) but it's really boring. There is a ton of assignments, you're pretty much doing one every day whether it be a discussion board post, random assignment, what have you. If there is another prof available I'd probably go that route.
The prof is very knowledgeable and kind, the lectures are fascinating, and the assignments, if you are organized, are very manageable. It's a hybrid class. You have to attend class only once a week, and you have to post only four discussion posts on two different days the rest of the week. Would take this class again. Prof is one of the best! :-)
Would rather have taken calc over again. There are assignments just about every day, keep this in mind if you have a busy schedule.
Ms. Gareis knows what she's talking about when it comes to intercultural communication and makes it almost impossible to fail . . . unless you dont show up. Its a hybrid class. A zero in the online discussions counts as an absense.
Attendance mandatory, but the lectures are great. I only wish theyd be twice a week, not just once. The second day per week is online. Take this class if you can! One of the best profs at Baruch.
Didn't buy the book, which was a mistake. Quizzes and discussions are done online. You have to read the book to do well . . . and remember to do the online assignments. The teacher is nice.
Excellent teacher, would highly recommend. Makes everyone feel welcome.
A lot of content to keep up with. Even though this is a hybrid class it is 2x more time consuming than any other one of my classes.
Nice lady, is very clear about assignments and grading. Use the rubrics and templates, and you'll do well.
It has been 2 years since I took International Business Communication from Prof. Gareis. The lectures were amazing--every topic an eye opener. The class helped me get a job that involves travel overseas and I'm using the things I learned on an almost daily basis. One of the best investments of my college career!
Expect group projects and discussion boards. Yes it very time consuming for an online class. However, if you follow her syllabus and get into the groove of posting your work on time, You will have no trouble passing. She's also kind enough to send out email reminders. Oh! And her lecture class isn't so boring, but what class is fun?
Prof. Garies is very knowledgeable and cares about students. Make sure to read the book and participate in the online discussions. Everything is spelled out clearly.
Superb class! Very interesting online lectures and discussions on everything related to international business. I was immediately able to apply the material covered in this class to my job. If you want to work internationally, I highly recommended this class. Prof. Gareis makes it feel like a face-to-face class. Lots of interaction.
She's the best. I loved the class!
Her class are usually very large, about 90-150 students per class, so you wont get much one-on-one. She uses blackboard non-stop! Quizzes every week, bunch of group and partner assignments. interesting subjects to talk about in her class, she gives a lot of option for extra credit, easy to get an A.
quiz after every chapter 10 question(5 from textbk 5 from lecture on blackbd) attend in must. you have a discussion question must answer 4 times a week. alot of email blast. it alot of work but the work isnt hard. also have buddy project- she pick a buddy for you and must write about them and cultural and do video. the class is interesting
The class is well organized. The professor is very clear what's due and how it's graded. If you read the textbook (T/F and multiple choice quizzes) and go to class, it's easy to do well. The class meets half in class and half online for discussions. The topics are interesting. There is also a buddy project where you study a classmates culture. Fun.
Quiz every week, discussion questions every week (must participate at least 4 times a week) or is marked as an absence. You are assigned a "buddy" for tge semester. She gives too many projects and tough grader, shes very confusing and overwhelming.
This class is very demanding. When I registered I wasn't aware it was going to be half online, which is where the book is discussed. Each chapter a student in your assigned group will come up with 3 questions and moderate the discussion. You are expected to post minimum 4 times. Which is very difficult for someone who works.
The professor is really organized. She gives reminders of all deadlines etc. even weekly quizzes. The instructions to the assignments are also very clear. But the class is half online and you have to be disciplined to follow thru. If you do, it's easy to do well. 1 online quiz and 4 discussion posts each week, class lectures, plus fun buddy project
Prof. Garies is great. the class is very interesting. she takes student comments into consideration and says that next semester there will be one less assignment. thats going to help a lot. take her. its very clear what one has to do to get an A.
The course load is manageable (a quiz each week but no midterm or final, and a research project on another culture w/ two journals and a slideshow/video). You have to attend and read the textbook (the quizzes are based it and on the lectures). Lectures are interesting and on point. The professor cares. There are extra credit opportunities.
The professor is nice but she does not present her materials clearly (too much materials) so it's very confusing , so you have to teach yourself and understand her materials on your own. Since it's hybrid class, there's always assignments and quizzes every week. Be prepared for a lot of work. You have to constantly check your e-mail and blackboard
The professor is organized and there are clear instructions for all assignments. The course is basically one lecture and one quiz per week (online, open book), four posts on the discussion board, and a semester-long culture project with a buddy (two journals and a slideshow). Its some work but all interesting. The prof responds right away.
Great professor, explains well. A bit of work, but if you study is definitely doable.
best class i took last semester. one of the best teachers at school. would take her again.
The class is a bit of work but it's not difficult to get an A. There is quiz each week on the textbook, an online discussion with four posts, and a research project. The professor is accessable and give extra credit assignments. It's hybrid. And there are 100 students in class.
Great class. I learned a lot and it was very interesting. Professor Gareis made the assignments very doable and helps you become more responsible by making you manage your time.
This is my first online class. The materials are interesting and well structured. Contrary to my expectations, the class is very interactive. The professor provides detailed feedback and responds immediately. A great class!
She's pretty good. Amount of coursework can be a nuisance at times though.
Professor Gareis is very knowledgable. The videos and screencasts are fun to watch, informative, and well done. Everything I learned in this class is applicable to my career. I highly recommend her. The class is fully online.
The online lectures are great. This was my first time in a class like this so it took me some time to understand the flow, but I really enjoyed it. The professor is always on call and the class very engaging and interesting.
I know people who are struggling in this class? It's based on whether or not you come to class and somewhat pay attention. If you come to every class and do what you gotta do, easy A. It's my easiest class of this semester. Just do the online posts and follow directions. It's really not that hard. The weekly online quizzes are a piece of cake.
I loved this class. The lectures are interesting, you learn about cultures, the discussions are insightful, and the extra credits are fun. The textbook is a little dense but I learned more than I thought. Take this class if you can.
great class and nice professor
The class is really well organized and the professor cares. Would take her again!
Professor Gareis is kind, patient, insightful, and intellectually stimulating. She cares about the topic and her students. Her class was a delight.
I ended up finishing with over a 100 in this class. There is a clear grading system and the professor gives a lot of chances for extra credit. Yes, there are a lot of assignments, home-works, quizzes, and projects, but they are pretty straightforward and as long as you follow instructions, you'll do well. Great teacher, wants you to do well.
Professor Gareis genuinely cares about the personal and professional development of her students. The class was very well organized, the professor provided excellent feedback, and the materials were interesting and informative. Amazing class!
The weekly work can definitely be annoying at times, and the textbook chapters are pretty long, but all in all, the class is pretty good. She's an easy grader, and very approachable. Answers emails quickly. Make sure to take VERY detailed notes in lecture. Literally every single thing she says is fair game for the weekly online quiz.
Prof. Gareis is so sweet! She is there for you if you need help! I would take her class again in a heartbeat!!!
Prof. Gareis is one of the most amazing professor I've ever taken. I will definitely take her again if I have a chance. Her class is hybrid, so there were discussion posts and quiz every week, but are very easy. No final. You will definitely enjoy this class!
One of the best professors at Baruch. Her grading criteria is very straightforward, there's plenty of extra credit opportunities, and the workload is not bad at all. As long as you follow directions and do all the work, guaranteed A in the class. You will learn a lot from from this professor; she's really passionate about teaching the material.
Prof. Gareis is wonderful: Very kind and makes herself available. The class is interesting and definitely thought provoking. Weekly online discussions and quizzes, but no final exam. A fun ethnographic buddy project, with 2 journals and a slideshow or video. Very clear grading criteria. Do the work, and you'll get an A. There is extra credit.
Do not take this class if you work, take more than 12 credits or have any obligation outside of school. You are required to participate in a discussion post 4 times a week, a quiz every week, 2 papers and create a video. It seems that if you miss one small thing your entire grade is impacted. most tedious and time consuming class I have ever taken
Yes the class has a lot of work but its easy work you don't need to spend more than 10 minutes on the quizzes or discussion posts. If you could do the work you should be fine in the class. She even doesn't count two of the worse discussion post and quizzes. If you're bad at managing your time and keeping track of what u need to do you'll struggle.
Prof. Gareis really cares about her students and listens to their concerns. Its a fully online class for Intro. to Communication (COM 2000) and she answered emails in a heartbeat! 10 quizzes (each 4 points), 10 individual assignments or discussion board (each 4 points), and participation grade 20 points. Participating CPP is 3 extra credit! Easy!
She will give and assignment, but wont specify what exactly she wants. Except for the discussion board, she has a 10 minute video on just that! Us students bonded over how annoying this class was. she will snatch points away from you like it's nothing. And the extra credit is lame. Just avoid!
This class is fully online. You have to read the textbook, watch a lecture video, take a weekly quiz and do one more assignmnet. Everything is really well organized and easy to follow. Take the professor up on it and go to her office hours. I got a good lead on an internship.
She is great. I recommend her to anyone. She is always there for u. Very passionate In what she does.
This class is eye-opening and should be a requirement. Prof. Gareis is very nice and, although this is a hybrid class, it is very interactive on account of the ethnographic buddy project, in which you'll investigate the culture of a fellow student. I highly recommend her. Wish she'd teach more classes on the topic.
i loved this class. its online and every week is on a different area of communication. u can do the work whenever u want to and if you have a question the professor will email u right back. she is cares
Prof Gareis is an expert in intercultural friendship, her research is cited in the textbook. She is really organized and makes things clear with a handout and grading info on every assignment. The class is a lot of work but overall a great experience.
This class is great. Itll keep you busy but it's worth it. The class is hybrid with lectures, online discussions, and a research project with a buddy from another culture. The online discussions are like real conversations. And the buddy project is an amazing experience and will open your mind to other cultures. The prof is really nice.
It was good. There was so much reading from the textbook and you cannot easily skim it. A quiz, a discussion post or self reflection assignment, and the reading of each chapter is required per week. She uses Blackboard for grading. There were 2 extra credit assignments. She is very caring for her students and she responds to emails during the day.
Good Professor. Lectures are fun and interactive and she responds fast via email for any questions you have. The course work load is a bit heavy for a com class. Lots of group projects and papers, but no midterm or final, just weekly quizes.
This class helps you have a broader perspective of understanding different cultures around the world. The professor is a sweet lady but she can be harsh at grading for little things she cut points off. The only thing I disliked in this class is the buddies project where you have no option to choose your partner and it really affects you.
Prof. Gareis is the sweetest! I took her online COM2000; every week we had to read the assigned chapter, watch a short video on blackboard, take a quiz and either submit a short essay/or post a discussion on blackboard. May sound like a lot, but honestly very easy and doable in a few hours. She's always available to help. Totally recommend!
DO NOT TAKE HER! Don't be fooled by ratings like we were. No class but she gives 5+ hours of videos and articles each week. You'll get a 10 question quiz every week & only have 10min! Its like picking a needle out of a haystack for 40% of grade. If you pick an article she doesn't like for weekly project response you GET ZEROS (50% of your grade)!!
Taking this professor for an online lecture and I just want to say her class is just super annoying to dealing with, she has so many things different assignments due every week it's hard to keep track of and it is just a HUGEEE time sink for all my other classes. It is just extremely annoying when she gives out like 5 assignments every week.
This is my third class with Prof. Gareis and she is wonderful. Every class I have taken is different - she puts in a lot of work to make the lectures interesting. The class is asynchronous. You read the book, view a lecture each week and do a country project. The weekly quizzes can be tricky but are doable.
Best online class in communication studies. Youll get your moneys worth. The lectures are amazing and make you think. Its intercultural awareness and should be a required class. She cares. Easy A if you do the work
If you're bad at time management and being organized, skip this class. Overall, easy discussion board every week and questions are posted by other peers in the class so it's easy to do. One project with the partner she assigns you and it's honestly not bad to meet and talk with other people since it's online now. There's extra credit as well.
such a sweet woman! the class had weekly assignments with specific date timelines, but the workload wasn't much at all. weekly quizzes were pretty easy if you watched her lecture video, and the buddy assignment was not too bad either! great course!
I liked her, she is a good professor. The only thing is that I didnt like (and thats why I wouldnt take her again) is lots of writing, every week you have discussions board with 3 different questions and you need to answer them all + reply to one student and it is mandatory, little annoying ! But she is great, and her lectures are interesting!
She's a very sweet professor. I enjoyed this class a lot. TAKE HER!!
She is caring but SUCH A METICULOUS GRADER. She will take off points for the smallest things. This is an asynchronous course but you will have to keep up with her strict weekly schedule of assignments (if you have extra outside responsibilities I do not recommend this class). However, I did learn a lot from students by the weekly discussion board.
Took her 2 times already. I love prof Gareis as a professor and as a person. She's always willing to help students even outside of class. You are expected to participate and do the work (there's quite a lot of things to do for this class) but honestly, it's all doable. You can get an A if put in the work. I would take her again if I could!
Harsh grader especially with minuscule details. You could read the whole chapter 5 times in a row, take the best most detailed notes on the lecture, and she'll STILL find a way to throw you off in her quizzes for no reason, and the workload is just plain inconsiderate of all the other classes/responsibilities people have in their lives.
She's too much. I'm honestly sick of this class. How she made the schedule is a joke, sunday to wednesday you have this to be done and wednesday to saturday you have other things that need to be done. Idk how she even came up with this nonsense schedule. Be ready, you got a quizz every week, 4 discussion boards, a moderator report 5pg and projects
the instructions are clear. the class is interesting. she makes you work for it, but it's an easy A if you do the work. she's really nice. always answers emails right away.
This professor is really thorough in her work and you have a pretty straightforward timeline of when to get everything done by. She is very very nice and responds quickly to emails. You have to put effort into your work, but you have to do that for every class anyway. You should manage your time well and you'll be fine.
Her class is really interesting and so are the assignments. Her lectures are also insightful so you will actually want to listen. I think that as long as you are completing everything on time and have a set schedule for everything, you will do really well. She does not try to trick you, everything is straightforward in this class.
I feel like her rating is fake. This is a tough class!!! She's a tough grader and you have to work veryyyy hard to get a good grade. Do not recommend
Really easy class just do the work and you will get an A. You also learn a lot through the discussion boards and quizzes each week. Other than just having the same simple routine each week there is nothing hard about this class.
Professor Gareis is a very caring educator. There is a lot of reading in this class and some heavy lectures but she tries to make them fun and interesting. You have to be a part of a weekly discussion and she sets up a timeline for them you must follow. There's a fun and an easy group project. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
I won't lie, there is a lot of reading in this class. But there's no exams, just 4 weekly 80-100 word discussion posts, 1 weekly 10 question multiple choice quiz, a fun ethnographic buddy project, and a short moderator report. It's a pretty easy and interesting class if you put in the effort.
Professor Elisabeth Gareis is great. The course topics are interesting and important in today's cultural world. Get ready for weekly (long) video lectures, textbook chapter readings, 4 discussion posts a week, 10 min quizzes, and an ethnographic buddy project. This course is a lot of work but it was worth it because it was interesting.
She is great and very focused and detailed. lots of work, 19-page syllabus. She is very particular about her grading system. if you work you will get an A but you have to make sure you invest your time. If you do you actually will learn a lot.
Great Professor! I took her asynchronous class, its basically lecture videos (30mins), 10 question MC quiz, 4 100 word discussion board posts every week. And also you get a culture partner and youll meet like 4 times and fill in feedback form. Shes organized and gives clear instructions. Also her recorded lectures are engaging! Stay committed
Prof. Gareis has clear grading criterias for everything. She also responds to emails quickly. I didnt have any problems with her assignments while the class was asynchronous. Weekly discussion boards and quizzes. The lectures were interesting and insightful. Quizzes were straightforward. Just be on time with deadlines and this should be an easy A
If you're not an organized or focused person, this professor is not for you. Assignment/discussion board schedules and instructions are complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it it's fine. Kind professor and interesting subject matter that's taught well. Assignments weren't difficult and grading was lenient.
She is too much for an asynchronous class. You need to participate on specific days for full credit, she takes off lecture videos before quiz, quiz due on thursdays. This is the worst online class I ever took. Avoid this if you have job or other classes. She wants you to spend your whole week only for her useless concepts. AVOID!!!!
For those who are looking for a COM course, don't take this one. She makes you do too much work and for this to be an asynch class, its a lot. She takes off points for the smallest things and it can give you a headache pretty fast. All the reviews may sound nice, but this class is too much if you have other classes that need more attention. Avoid.
I would not take this class. I have other classes and commitments and this class is making it EXTREMELY hard for me to balance things out. The requirements is outrageous and its a pain to keep up, especially if you have heavier classes. This isn't how a COM class should be, this is becoming more like an ENG class. Avoid the headache and stress.
Prof Gareis gives very clear guidelines and even in her recorded lectures she often explains instructions even clearer. I'd take her again. Def not an easy A but if you just read and ask questions - you will do good. The people with negative comments probably expected the class to be an easy A. SMH
Professor Gareis really teaches you about intercultural com, she does have specific requirements for discussion boards, quizzes, etc. But so does every professor! She is very sweet and I reached out to her during summer because her class inspired me to change my minor to com! She responded to me and I found her very helpful, insightful, responsive
Assigns 4 discussion boards every week with specific guidelines but they aren't difficult and you get used to it. There are weekly timed quizzes but they aren't too bad. She drops the two lowest grades for both the Discussion posts and quizzes. This class is very doable and the material is quite interesting
Did not like this professor whatsoever. Nit picks about every little thing and does not provide helpful feedback. Entire class is based off of a group assignment. Quizzes every week based on her lectures and the chapter readings. She is not the worst professor but there are definitely better professors.
Prof Gareis gave clear lectures & assigned quizzes with them. The lectures are ~1hr videos with readings, you'd be quizzed on only 10 questions. Make sure you take a LOT of notes in the vids. Quizzes were very difficult and take up most of your grade. Group project is simple, reach out to her for help with that! Gives extra credit. Very tech savvy.
I highly recommend Prof. Gareis! She's tech-savvy and her classes were one of the most structured I've ever seen in Baruch, which really helped me stay on track with deadlines since she releases them by week and she sends out reminders through email. Her quizzes and applications could get a little tedious, but you could finish them in one sitting!
Absolutely amazing, her lesson is straight-forward and clear. The first 2 weeks are a bit overwhelming but she really does try to ease you into her class. She really does care for her students; just do everything as she explains it and you'll have an easy A. Could not rave about this prof enough honestly, rare at Baruch.
The first 2 weeks will be confusing but after that, the class gets very easy. Just weekly db's and quizzes, and the project (you and 1 other person) is very simple. Not a hard class but just gotta pay attention to what she wants. It's asynch but she emails back quick and loves to help you. Sweet lady and simple class.
Chill professor, most of her classes are async, you just have weekly assignments to do which includes 1 quiz and 4 discussion boards. Could be a hassle but once you get use to it it's pretty easy. There are some more stuff every now and then such as talking to your cultural partner and write but overall would recommend.
Amazing professor that tries her best to make herself available for all her students. Classes were asynchronous and only had a few discussions and a quiz each week. The workload was alright and the content was really interesting.
I get that we are in college and we are expected to have a certain amount of workload for a class. However, before you enroll in this class, please make sure you don't have any other commitment let this be your only class.
Assignments are lengthy but she's a good professor. Very responsive on emails and make sure to read the textbook and lectures for the quizzes.
The class was an asynchronous class. You were expected to write 4 discussion board posts and take a quiz every week. It's a lot of work but the material is interesting and simple to understand. Overall a pretty easy class. Just be ready to spend around 1 hour every week on the work.
Very easy class but it does require a lot of work. There are weekly quizzes and discussions boards due which are fairly simple. There is a semester long group project where she pairs you up with another student which is not that difficult. It may seem like a lot of work sometimes but everything is pretty easy.
Felt a bit overwhelming at first but once you get the hang of things it was rather easy. Honestly, it's an easy A if you FOLLOW HER DIRECTIONS to a T, and put in some effort. I recommend her and would take more of her classes.
I took COM 2000 online. There were weekly discussion posts (2x posts were required) and weekly quizzes, but no exams or papers. Prof. Gareis is very specific about her instructions, so make sure to follow them exactly. Overall, this class was easy and only took up 30-45 min a week.
Professor Gareis is a nice person, but who class is incredibly hard to understand due dates/what to do. It is an online class that requires two different discussion posts both due during a specific, but different time of the week. There is a weekly quiz also due during a specific time of the week, then you have to meet a person outside of class 2x
HIIIIIGHLY RECOMMEND, amazing course.
Professor Gareis' class is manageable, with weekly discussions and quizzes. The workload is reasonable, and the material is interesting. Using unstuck study alongside the textbook helps with study prep. Overall, an engaging course worth taking.
Professor Gareis is a really sweet and caring professor. I had her for an Asynchronous class in the fall and her assignments are straight forward and simple. She gives tons of extra credit and really wants you to do well. Take her you won't regret it.
Her class is very manageable. Considering the fact that this class is asynch, I think Professor Gareis has created a perfect curriculum. I have never struggled to complete her weekly assignments and I actually find them very informative and fun. I enjoy her class so much I am leaving a review halfway through to encourage students to take her!
This professor has to be one of the nicest one at Baruch. Shes very clear in her assignments and provides several videos for any questions you may have. I never had a problem throughout the semester with this class. Very Easy A!!
The sweetest professor I've had in Baruch! She gave us an option to either do a discussion post or an assignment weekly. We also have a weekly quiz with 10 questions which was based on her lecture video and textbook. She drops the 2 lowest grades from assignments and quizzes. She gave a lot extra credit opportunities.
