Great class-I learned a lot. Prof very passionate about her subject, makes it very interesting. I will definitely try to take more of her classes.
Elisabeth is a wonderful teacher. She is a very pleasent lady to be around and to learn from. Her monuments class was great.
Elisabeth is a great lady. Knows a lot and has been all around the world. Don't take this class if you are planning on slacking, because there's a lot of work, but it's fun and totally worth it!
the class initially was suppose to be about monuments but some how turned into religion hour, tuff class not a blow off like i thought, very knowledgable lady, expect to do a 15 minute presentation in there. the rest of your exams are written, kind of tuff grader as well
I loved this class! It was great. She is one of the best teachers at this school!
This class made me think differently about the world around me. I liked that. I see things I would have never paid attention to before. This class will be with me for many more years to come. I learned stuff that goes way beyond this class or anything I would have expected of it.
ET is very passionate about her class. She is also very knowledgable and a world wide traveler. She is a tough grader. Lots of work and papers due. Not a class one can breeze through.
SHE WAS AWESOME..UNFORTANATELY, SHE NEEDED SURGERY THE 2ND HALF OF SEMESTER...WE GOT STUCK WITH MARIANNE SACHS-JACOB WHO WAS A DISASTER........D I S A S T E R
I only took this class to fulfill humanities reqs & only had lukewarm interest initially. But, ET is extremely knowledgeable & passionate about art & made it extremely interesting. Her enthusiasm is absolutely contagious. I loved this class & learned so much! See warnings on next comment.
I took this class to fill a requirement but it is so interesting I recommend it even if you don't need the art/hum cred. If you're not scared by a little hard work (five 4-5 page comparitive essays & 1 presentation), take good notes, and write solid essays, you'll do very well. Make sure you've taken Comp 1 so you don't struggle with those essays!
I have had these two with her. She is thorough, and accessible. No books for either class: don't let it fool you; lots of self-work. She's a tough grader. Otherwise; she never missed class, and was available whenever. She makes time fly by; both were 3 hour classes, and it was never dull. She was a rare gem to find at the school. Good luck!
E.T. is a wonderful teacher. She makes class very interesting, as already stated. And just a little note: My papers were just a couple pages long and went just as well as a 4 or 5-pager. She doesn't really look at the length as much as she does the actual ideas. And excellent teacher that puts your mind to use!
She might be the best teacher I've ever had! The class was intense, I learned so much. She is kind and truely loves to teach and in return she excepts the best out of you.
This was possibly one of the greatest classes I ever took. I took it as a required cross-cultural humanities course and was just fascinated with the subjects covered. E.T. is a fun and fascinating person. Take this class, you will NOT be sorry!.
Her class is phenomenal. Her lectures are fascinating and she encourages thoughtful, intelligent discussions. Yes, you will have to work, and hard, to earn that "A", but when class is this intriguing how could anyone mind? I HIGHLY recommend her. You'll be amazed at how much you've learned and loved the class when it's over.
This is an interesting class with a great teacher. The material is fascinating. She is confident but a bit arrogant. Good at answering questions. A tough grader but don't make the same mistake twice, she will BLAST you.
Elisabeth is a wonderful teacher. She speaks clearly and adds fun into art history, which I now want to go into because of her and her class. Coming to class is the best thing you can do, and take notes of everything she says/writes/puts in her ppt presentations!! I had a full notebook, which helped me greatly and I still refer to it. ask questions
I can't say enough good things about this professor. She's interesting and challenging and she expects you to learn rather than just regurgitate information. I loved the class, probably one of the best I've ever taken. Everyone should take it, if not for a grade at least to learn about the world around you so that you can better be a part of it.
Very, very, very respectable teacher. If you're looking for an easy class to show up to two or three times, don't bother with Elisabeth's classes. She does a wonderful job of educating her students through her research and experiences throughout the world. Her confidence, education, and sense of humor make the semester well worth your time.
Has an expert's grasp on the material and teaches it very well with powerpoint presentations that are information filled. A 2-3pg paper every week, not difficult subjects. Extremely easy grading scale. Drops 2/4 tests and 2/8 homework. Great teacher. Solid class. Don't like attendance being mandatory but what can ya do?
One of th best teachers I ever had. This isn't class, it's an experience! She makes you think.
very interesting class, no text book, if your a bad note taker, then tuff. be prepard to do alot of papers.
She's a brilliant person and instructor. This class is not easy if writing papers is hard for you but you will definitely learn a lot and it's worth the work. Show up for class and take lots of notes. The final is not that hard. I loved this class.
She is a GREAT instructor!!! I learned so many interesting things in her class :)
The class is not what you expect. It's n apreciation class and it feels like a History class! Don't buy the book!!! Her test are CRAZY!
Interesting lectures, be ready for a lot of critical thinking and analyzing on quizzes. PAY ATTENTION AND GO TO CLASS! You'll be fine if you do. Nice lady, she knows the subject matter well.
Not very clear in everything she does... I would not recommend her to anyone!
One of the best classes I've ever taken. She's got it all layed out so that it's presented in an easy to understand format.
There has never been a more influential proff. in my entire academic career. Yes you spend time on multiple assignments and have to give a presentation. The curriculum is well rounded and prepares you for all classes to come. If you want a tour of the world with a GREAT PROFF. this is the class to take. She is very inspirational.
This teacher will always be my favorite. I have never learned so much about the world from any other teacher and I come across things that I have learned from her on a daily basis. Her lectures are fascinating and she is well known and respected in our community. There is a lot of work in this class but the things I learned will be with me always.
This was the most interesting, interactive class I've had in a while. She is the perfect prof to teach this class because she's been everywhere that she teaches on. It's an excellent experience and a way to "travel the world" with someone who knows their stuff and puts a lot into ensuring you learn. She is inspirational, helpful, clear & the best!
In the summer I took one of the rare museum sections that is offered. It was a blast! Every week we went to either a museum, an artist's studio, a collector's home, or town to study art and architecture. Not a dull moment! What a way to learn. And you WILL learn, but in a way you will never forget. This was a life' s experience. Great Job!
If you're looking at taking ART 150 then I highly recommend this instructor. This is one of the few classes I've taken that I feel I've actually learned something. The class itself is mostly lecture, but I always found them interesting and educational. There is a lot of work involved, but everything expected of you is spelled out on day one.
Would not recommend this class. Interesting content, but unreasonable homework requirements. Will never take her again....
Very unreasonable class, did not expect to do more work in this class than my Anatomy class. Really would run before taking this class. Bad experience, ruined my whole semester and her grading is unrealistic!!!!!
I just finished the same class the last two comments were based on. It is clear what kind of students are talking here! This was by FAR the best class I ever took. Homework & papers are laid out clearly at the beginning. You have full control over your workload. And the content is priceless! If you are a serious student you will LOVE this.
I second that last comment! Terrific class. Worth every bit of effort. Grading was fair - don't mind the person two comments back. Lots of "messed up" grades can be dropped and replaced. This is one of the most hard-working profs I have met in my long career as a student and that means we benefit! I recommend her to everyone I know. Go ET!
awesome teacher, i learned so much, a lot of work tho.. literally the only teacher i would genuinely recommend!
Would recommend this class. I can see where the bad comments came from. There is a lot of homework and I myself had a few disagreements via email with this instructor. Mostly about the grading of the tests. Which if you guess on any of the answers and get it wrong then that counts against your right answers. I did not like that but overall I learne
cont. from last comment. But overall she is a very dedicated teacher and goes beyond her teaching duty. One can really learn alot from her. I am glad I took her class.
She was a very good teacher, she really knows what she is talking about. But the expectations when it comes to the assignments and Exams are too much. I spent more time working on assignments and studying for Exams (which are EVERY other week, in the Testing Center, and take at least 1-2 hours to complete. 7 total, that means up to 14 hours outsi
The summer museum section of ART 130 was great. Actually, it has yet to end, but it has been great. Elisabeth knows the material so well and visiting the museums is really interesting. Yes, there is work involved but this is a college class; hard work is expected. However much work we students do, Elisabeth is doing equal in planning it all!
Elisabeth is very dedicated to her work and her class. I took the museum section and it was alot of fun. She expects alot in 7 1/2 wks but she gives u plenty of study guidelines. She really knows her stuff and brings interesting topics and ideas to her class. Recommended highly-for ppl with no interest in arts and just need to for credit like me
shes a good professor but thinks a little bit too highly of herself, doesn't like when people contradict her and thinks her class and teaching style are the best, when most people take it as a requirement for eastern.... A LOT of work. Treats you like you're in high school: mandatory attendance, no talking, no phones, no laptops...
I didn't like her too much. She is different from other teachers. The weekly homework took me a while to do and the essay she pretty said it wasn't no where what was expected. My advice would be if you are taking her: do all the homework, review terms EVERY week, and make sure you know the maps. Also do all the extra credit you can.
Fantastic experience. I have lived in my little US world for all of my life until now. Now I see and hear things that would have just blasted by me thanks to this class. There was work, but never wasted. Every hour I spent was a reward.
Great experience! This is not an easy class and the work is moderate, but Prof. Thoburn's approach creates a excellent experience that is fun and challenging. I highly recommend Prof. Thoburn and this class.
I really enjoyed this class with Professor Thoburn. She is very knowledgeable about the material she is covering and encourages class participation. After taking this class, I have a new found appreciation for art and humanities. I wish I could take her class again.
The class was great and I?m a better student for completing it. Elisabeth is an articulate communicator, she uses Blackboard extensively, and gives you meaningful feedback on all assignments. She is passionate about the material and that rubs off on the students. You?ll have to prepare for each lecture, but the effort is well worth the payoff.

Elisabeth is a wonderful instructor, who structures her classes so that it is easy to learn what could be very difficult information. She uses Blackboard in a fantastic manner that allows students to be fully aware of what is required of them and how to attain the grade they want.
Fascinating and unique professor; prepare to be thoroughly entertained. Has a remarkable talent for both spicing up potentially dull content and connecting it to the contemporary world. Enthusiastic lecturer, but not in an obnoxious manner. Knowledgeable and experienced. Moderate work load. Very approachable. Helps students to achieve improvement.
Excellent Teacher! Great personality. Moderate work load. The class will be easy if you prepare for each week. You will enjoy her and her class!
Took this class for the humanities/art requirement for associates degree. Was an interesting class. My only complaint was I didn't like the "clicker" tests. I would prefer it done on paper and I felt rushed. Also, the way things were phrased, I got several questions wrong that were right but were not the best answer. Good teacher overall and class.
Being a devote reader for nearly my whole life, I came in having a grasp on a lot of things, however, I never had them all wove together in one big picture like I do now. Wow! The content was great, but analyzing is what really empowers; learning to be more effective at analyzing is a huge thing to walk away with.
ET's lessons are interesting because she's actually been to the places and explored the monuments, and brings that expertise to you. It's a challenge, but worth the effort to take this class. Be prepared, work, think, want to learn, don't be lazy, and you will succeed. She is smart but not condescending. Class is highly recommended!
Only take her classes If you are planning to become an art major. She gives you so much do until you throw up whenever you hear the word Art.
Super awsome teacher. She is so interesting and has so much kowledge of the world. I now see the world in a whole new light. Thanks so much for a wonderful time!
I was very impressed with the knowledge I gained from taking this course. ET kept the class interesting. She reviewed everything prior to every class period. I would definatly take her again for another class.
This is an amazing class, she gives you plenty of chances to get a good grade as long as you try. And it was extremely interesting.
Best class I ever took. Fascinating! Everyone should take it!
Very interesting and knowledgable. Makes the class fun. Her lectures should not be missed, you will enjoy each one of them. Keep up with the class work and you will do well.
One of the best classes I have ever taken. Thoburn is an engaging lecturer who can hold students' attention for all three hours. She hands out study sheets for each unit and the tests are fairly based on material covered. For anyone interested in art/history/humanities, this course is an absolute must! You will not be disappointed.
ET is very hard to understand & 90% of the class expressed the same view. I felt like I was being set up to fail. I emailed her at midterms to inquire about my grade and she was extremely rude to me. It made me feel like she didnt care. Her grading and explaniation of what is expected to do well in her class is very confusing. I DO NOT recommend!
Good instructor except when it comes to the relgious stuff.
I took Hum 101 last semester and am taking Art 150 now (even better!). Teacher has a great sense of humor, makes three hour classes palatable and approaches subjects objectively and with the goal to learn analytical skills (including religion-that's what some people object to...). Very refreshing. Her classes are top notch!
One of the best classes offered. This instructor knows her stuff about all the cultures we studied and makes the class VERY interesting. If you keep up, you will do well.
I am an Astrophysics major. I took this class b/c it was required by the university I am transferring to. Needless to say my interests were not in art before taking this class. she gave me a new appreciation for Art, and I found her class very engaging. I highly recommend any of her classes. Not only for the material, but for the teacher as well.
super nice, makes class fun, I would defintley take her clasa again!! great, fun, interesting teacher!!!
She is great! Her lectures give you all the information that you need to pass her exams and her in class essays. There is a lot of side work for the class, but shhe gives extra credit like no other. It's easy to recieve an "A" in this class as long as you show up to it!!
Take this class only if you have enough time, otherwise you will fall behind quickly. That said, the class changed my life. Professor Thoburn is the best instructor out of the 20+ I have encountered at WCC.
ET is a very helpful, very knowledgeable professor. As long as you attend that class regularly, you will pass the class. All of the information is in the lectures, and everything is perfectly clear. Easy A as long as you do the work.
Awesome teacher. Easy class that is pretty fun. she takes away your lowest quiz and lowest paper. quizes have ten extra credit points so getting an A out of a 50 point quiz is not hard. fun class and im not much of an art guy
Elisabeth is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Her classes will make you see the world in a different way.
Elizabeth is one of the best teachers I've had. Her first hand knowledge of the subject is such a bonus when understanding the art and culture. She does her best to help you succeed and truly cares about her students. Such an interesting and great class!!
ET was my favorite teacher last semester. She's very clear and helpful. She does sometimes ask for a bit of work done, but she's always reasonable and flexible with your schedule. What I loved most about this class was her first hand knowledge of the subject. Great teach great class! Definitly recommend it to everyone.
Elisabeth has been one of my favorite teachers. She makes the content very interesting, and makes it fun to attend class. She's traveled to pretty much all of the places we talked about in class which made for an interesting perspective. She's extremely nice and all in all just an amazing teacher :).
No book needed! Great presentation of material. Homework every week. She is very helpful and considerate of students thoughts since parts of class can be controversial. Loved the class overall! Fun and engaging. 4 tests (clicker tests). Last is optional is you don't need it. I haven't enjoyed a class this much in a long time! Highly recommend.
I really liked Elizabeth, she is very nice and helpful. She made the class very interesting, but it can be tough at times. There are 3 mandatory tests/essays and 1 optional if you want to raise your grade. I recommend taking a composition class for help writing an essay. She will give you every chance to get a good grade. Overall very good teacher
Great class and instructor. Lots of writing and homework but fair. She gave us lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Awesome teacher! Passionate about the subject matter, been to almost every monument she taught. Made me think outside the box and was challenging. You will learn so much! I recommend this to anyone who likes history or wants to learn more about world cultures!
ET is amazing and one of the best teachers at WCC. Her expectations are high and the tests are not super easy but, she gives you all the tools to succeed. This is not a blow-off class but you will learn a lot. She is incredibly knowledge and has a ton of experience in the field. GREAT TEACHER!
Wonderful class and teacher! ET is passionate about the subject which makes listening to her lectures interesting. There's weekly homework, clicker quizzes and essays (she allows you to drop the lowest grades). She gives you a choice of an event report or PowerPoint presentation and is very helpful with questions. Extra credit is also available.
I had an amazing term. ET is a gifted teacher that gives you EVERY opportunity to do well. There are extra credit opportunities galore. DO NOT take this class if you think it will be easy. It is challenging. There is a good amount of homework and several quizzes. In the end though you'll be glad. I am a better student because of this class.
Great teacher, even if the subject matter wasn't fun ETs enthusiasm could sustain the class. Highly recommended.
ET is one of the BEST WCC Instructors I've had. She is passionate about the subject matter and she makes it interesting! The class is easy if you follow the syllabus. Weekly homework assignments help keep you on track with the lectures, the test are completed using a clicker, but she gives you plenty of time to answer.
VERY interesting class, LOTS of homework, EXCELLENT instructor. All the homework, essays, and the presentation are worth it. I really learned a lot and it was refreshing to have an instructor who encourage critical thinking to the extent that she did. It would be a mistake not to take her class. Oh, and there is no textbook.
ET is an amazing instructor who earned and kept my admiration throughout the term. Her enthusiasm and love for what she teaches is so contagious you want to travel with her! Love her no nonsense way of teaching. No textbook and she does not give an unreasonable amount of homework. Great instructor and class, wish I was coming back in the fall!
Ms. Thoburn cared a lot about her students and their understanding of the courses material. Her lectured were very clear and powerpoints were interesting.
ET is the best Prof i have ever had. She knows how to grab your attention and make you love the subject. and makes you hate to skip a class because you'll miss out on great information. she will try her best to help you pass
ET is the best professor I have ever had. She is immensely knowledgeable about the subject, and has even been to many of the places she speaks of. She incorporates photos and knick-knacks she brought back into lesson plans, and almost always has an interesting anecdote. She truly cares about her students, and provides a tea bar! Who does that?
ET is an amazing professor. She is EXTREMELY knowledgeable on all class material. 9 times out of 10 has personally been to each place she lectures on. She's very fair and flexible about giving choices for which assignments you choose to do. 1 con: she does not give enough time for the clicker tests! Impatient not enough time to even read choices.
This is a person who has a unique outlook on life, coming from a historic area at a historic time as well as being a person who has visited many important sites worldwide. She is probably as close to the source material for the course as any teacher can get. She also has used her years teaching to perfect her technique. Very well rounded.
BORING BORING BORING. She is a great teacher, but class is long and boring.
ET is the best in the biz. Ms. Thoburn will turn an uncultured swine into a lifelong art lover. Her classes may be long, but she gives ample breaks. She has traveled the world so she gives first hand experiences along with lectures just goes to show how fit for the job she is. ET makes difficult subjects crystal clear all with a smile on her face
Elisabeth is one of those remarkable teachers you think of when confronted with the problems of education today. She doesn't just want to teach you the course material, she wants you to think. By far one of the best courses I've taken at WCC.
Absolutely wonderful teacher. Thoroughly knowledgeable about the material. Introduced me to a whole new world. Her lectures are inspiring. Assignments and tests rely a great deal on your own ability to research the material. She doesn't hold your hand for you, but was quick and ready to help in any regard to the class. I highly recommend her.
If you are interested in monuments, cultures, and comparative religions this is the best person to learn from. She brings a whole new level to learning, she wants you to think, participate, and analyze. She gives a unique perspective and has been to most of the regions and places that she teaches, very knowledgeable.
You would really be doing yourself a favor if you took a class with this teacher, she does everything she can to help you pass. I didn't know I liked art history until her class made it a passion of mine. She lays everything out so cohesively, it makes entire time periods of art digestible. After her class, museums seem like a playground.
Doesn't explain the instructions for homework/papers & the online instructions are sometimes unclear/not specific. Lets you drop 1 quiz & 1 paper. Lots of extra credit available. The quizzes are done all w/ clickers, which is definitely a negative. Lectures are unclear. Study guides provided, but must study/take detailed notes.
Professor Thoburn is one of the best at Washtenaw Community College! I would highly recommend taking any or all of her courses. A student is required to put forth an effort in their studies by utilizing all that is available; the Powerpoint oulines on Bb, taking detailed notes in class, etc. Thoburn is dedicated and reflects in how she teaches!
Ms Thoburn is a magnificent teacher in the field of ART. I think she is by far the most experienced teacher in the art department. Her class is setup so you can't fail if you show up and do the assignments. She is a stickler with attendance and will mark you down for leaving or not attending. Her quizzes are the only thing I disliked.
Great Professor. she will make sure that all the students understand the subject. I highly recommend Dr. E.T for any student.
Overall a great teacher. Class is extremely too long. Her "quizzes" are hard you must come to class to pass. If you don't come to class one week you might as well forgot about the test next week. There's a quiz and paper about every other week. Although she's very nice.
E.T. is an amazing teacher and by far my favorite professor I've had in my college career. Her lectures are long and you can't miss them, however the power points and everything you need to know and use is on blackboard all ready for you. She has tea and coffee set out every day for you and really cares about her students.I definitely recommend her
Do yourself a favor and take a class with ET. She is an amazing professor and very knowledgeable. She has been to a lot of the places that she teaches about which gives another layer to her teaching. She makes a 3hr class go fast. Expect to show up and participate every week. Not an easy A but do the work and you will be fine.
ET has a global worldview and makes sure she understands and be understood. No textbook for those who want to save, however, be ready to use the library and the internet heavily because there are assignments which are due just before the start of each class. Also, clickers are used for reviews and help people with good grades to avoid final exams!
Ms. Thoburn is willing to take the time and explain any concerns/questions you may have and guides you along the way to be as successful as possible.
Definitely not a regurgitate information type of class, thinking required. That being said, I did enjoy the class and feel the work load was doable, but it was WORK.
E.T is a great teacher! She is well traveled and educated which shows through the preparation of her lectures and one of a kind power points. Quizzes and homework requiring extensive research every week, along with a project to prepare for. If you work hard and show up to class it will return you with a wealth of knowledge and an earned A.
This is like a fun art history class, which usually bore me, but this was the most fun class I've ever taken. ET makes her lectures fun and interesting. She even has a tea bar in the back of her room. She knows a lot and has been everywhere. Take good notes and study them, you have to show up to class and you have a clicker quiz every other week.
She is a fantastic teacher! She is funny, nice, very sweet, also flexible and willing to help you on anything. She makes you think about artifacts and things in a way I've never been able to before. She has been to a lot of the places she lectures about which makes the lectures so much better. She uses clickers which are fun. Seriously take her!!
ET is one of the best teachers I have ever had! She is very kind, friendly, and cares about every single student. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and she loves teaching the material. Her lectures are very interesting and are never boring, she teaches one how to be analytical and develop new thinking skills that will be used in life!
Prof Thoburn has traveled extensively into and through the regions that she is teaching about in this HUM 101 class. Her experiences abroad have resulted in her being exceptionally knowledgeable about the subject matter, & her passion about the people and history she teaches about really shines through. Wonderful person, selfless & inspirational.
Shes a real sweet heart. The lectures are always entertaining, and the homework load is pretty minimal for a college course. Ive had many high school classes with more. She even brings tea for students to drink in class!
She is an amazing teacher. Very knowledgeable on the material. Very funny, and nice. Responds quickly, and with good feedback on any questions or concerns. Class was always entertaining. Would definitely take again.
She is a FANTASTIC teacher!! Her ability to make you understand connections between things is great! She uses Clickers for her tests so it's less stressful. Homework once a week but easy to find answers. She makes sure you understand the material and answers your questions. She has traveled and incorporates that into her lectures. Class isn't hard
ET is a remarkable professor. She avidly interacts and communicates with her students and teaches to every learning ability. Her passion for teaching and reaching out to students is incredible. She makes you really WANT to learn. By far some of my favorite classes were taken with her - 100% take her class. You will not regret!
Elisabeth is very knowledgeable in her field of study. She has been to every place she teaches about and is like a modern day Indiana Jones. Her class is never boring and she even brings tea and coffee for her students. This is the first class I didn't look forward to being over. I will definitely be signing up for her other courses.
An amazing teacher who is friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. You need to have good attendance, but if you show up to class on time, she gives you plenty of in-class time to practice on what you need to know, and her lectures are quite interesting. Grade criteria is very reasonable, and she will help you through the class if you're having trouble.
I like her class, because with some effort, you will be just fine. Student has to submit homework every week and do other work.
always fun and made the long 3 hour class feel much shorter than it actually was. Gave some much needed breaks
ET was a great professor with a lot of personal experience and understanding in the humnatiunties. She was very knowledgeable about all the topics we covered. She also had a very interesting back story and lots of fun traveling stories. If you are interested in history and the humanities she is a perfect match!
Professor was easily reachable and gave constructive feedback. Consistent amount of work. There were more assignments due that usual the week of and after thanksgiving, but she gave an extension and the late submission policy was pretty fair. Extra credit opportunities were presented throughout the semester.
You can tell that Mrs. Thoburn is still enthuastic & interested in what she teaches. The class is laid out for you so there is NO reason why you shouldn't get an A+. Lots of blogs(16 total)plus DB assignments, lots of quizzes, & 3 exams. You have to put in the time. You know the assignments will be due, so do them ASAP. W'end freedom can be yours!
Everyone NEEDS to have a class with ET. Her lectures are incredibly interesting and each class was such a joy to attend. I learned so much about the arts in this class. Homework wasn't that intense, and she always made sure you felt prepared for the exams. She never hid anything from you and always made sure you felt confident in the material.
Elisabeth Thoburn is an amazing instructor! Her lectures are fun and interesting. she makes class something to look forward to. I would recommend her!
I am so glad I took this class. It is amazing and E.T. is not only knowledgable but extremely interesting and engaging. I am going to make a concerted effort to take every class taught by her during my time at WCC. SHE IS THAT AMAZING! I thoroughly enjoyed attending class and listening to her lectures!
I took Art150 monument and cultures. She is by far one of the best professor I ever have, I would really recommend her to any of you that will take her class. I only have one class with her but I heard she teach another class too, so I really thing if you have her as your professor, that semester will be one of the best semester you ever have.
Prof. Thoburn is a great art teacher who is knowledgable about the material and wants you to do well in her class. She gives very clear grading criteria in her feedback to blog posts and discussion posts, so if you follow it you will do well. I would take Elisabeth again even though I'm a poli-sci major. I thoroughly enjoyed this course!
i did not like the class at first. I am a construction major and although I enjoy art I didn't see much need for it in my field. I was wrong. ET as you may come to call her gave me great, firm, adult, real life feed back on art and writing and how things should be done. I respect that and i really grew to enjoy the class. Take her course! A.B.
The art class with tough due to the amount of material but if you kept to and and stayed dedicated it turned out to be a wonderful learning experaince. She was very understanding and provided wonderful feedback!!
Prof. Elisabeth is beyond fast in responding to any emails/ concerns, which I found VERY helpful in an online class. The syllabus and schedule are laid out in a checklist kind of way that will make tracking all your progress easy. You'll do great as long as you meet the deadlines on time and listen to her feedback. Great prof. would take again
My first online class was with Ms. Thoburn and it was a great first experience. Awesome website, very easy to navigate. Responds to emails in a timely matter. I requirement getting the book- it helps with a lot of assignments. This class takes time, with the videos and writing assignments its more of a core class than an elective. Learned a lot!
Prof Thoburn teaches an excellent class. Really engaging material and I learned far more than expected for a gen ed art class. Most importantly, she cares about you and you'll feel it. She's focused on you taking the time to absorb the material and it really made the difference for me. 10/10 would take again. Such a pleasant experience
I have much respect for Dr. Thoburn. Her love for art is contagious. Her class is designed well because it helps serious students go deeper into topics if they desire but does not bury a novice student. You will grow in her class. Do not waste her time if you do not want to learn because you need to put in effort to succeed. It was worth it for me.
I took Art Appreciation On-Line Spring Semester so work was condensed into fewer weeks than normal. I had a rough start but Professor Thoburn was very helpful and patient, even after my repeated bungling. She DOES care and responds quickly and kindly. The assignments are interesting and you will grow academically and personally taking this class.
Elisabeth Thoburn, aka ET, is awesome great person and professor! Fair, helpful, understanding, caring, etc., I took her online ART130 and not only was it better than expected, but anytime I had questions always responded quickly and clearly. Shes very passionate about Art and/so truly enjoys teaching it, would definitely recommend Professor ET.
She makes you work for your grade, but do all the online work and it will pay off. All test questions are from practice quizzes. She prefers quality over quantity. She much rather you submit good work than meet the deadline and have sloppy work. responds to email quickly and wants you to succeed
Definitely a class that makes you work for an A, but Prof Thoburn is an amazing woman to learn from. She is understanding and willing to help you if you ask for it. She is on top of midterm and final grades and posts on time. I recommend taking her in person but online was a great experience for me too. If you have an opportunity to take her do it!
This is my third class with ET. She puts a lot into her classes and it makes them incredibly rewarding to take. I really enjoyed her Mythology class and found the cultural context to be a wonderful addition to the myths themselves. I highly recommend you take a class or two with ET!
Absolutely loved ET. She is very passionate about art and her job and it really shows in her lectures. She wants to do everything she can to help you learn and pass the class. The workload: Every week was either a 2 page paper or quiz and final project. Easy grader. You don't have to do the reading but I highly recommend you do!
ET. One of the greatest instructors here at WCC. I really enjoyed this class. I call this class travel the world ET loves this class and she teaches it from her heart.
The textbook isn't required(But helpful!), and she provides a 5 dollar donation for the text book. If you're nervous to present in front of the class she provides two different options at that point in time. So don't worry too much, you will have to present at one point, but it's fairly short. Also very kind and will help you succeed in the class.
ET is a great instructor! Her lectures are comprehensive and interesting, and she's very engaging while she teaches. There's a fair amount of work, but she's always more than willing to help you understand anything if you have any questions. She is incredibly nice and goes out of her way to recognize and treat you as a person rather than a student
Professor Thoburn conducts an amazing online course and provide plenty of resources for the coursework. Whenever you have questions she's readily available. A very down-to-earth and empathetic instructor that wants her students to succeed and has an understanding of the reality of hurdles outside of the class. I learned so much from her course!
She gives really good feedback but shes a really tough grader. It was nice to take the class but there was so much homework and assignments. I would spend hours trying to finish all of the work she would assign us. (Online class)
Very tough grader. Gives feedback on the grades, but its ART 130 seriously get a life.
Awesome class if you put in the time (appropriate number of hours if you compare to face-to-face). There is so much to learn that goes way beyond "just art". Instructor is there at any time of the week to answer questions quickly and comprehensively. She really takes a personal interest in every student even though this is an online class.
She is amazing, I had her for Mythology and wish we had more time to cover more of the text.
I cannot say enough great things about Professor Thoburn!!! She is sincerely one of the best professors I have had in my college career! The class load is veryyy minimal & she gives so many extra credit opportunities! The assignments are straight forward. She engages well with the students and provides incredibly helpful feedback. TAKE THIS PROF!
Excellent and well organized online class. I took this as a humanities requirement during spring/summer semester and, while there is a lot of work to turn in, the professor actually cut some things out so we weren't so loaded down. She gives consistent and detailed feedback on every single assignment. If you have to take ART130, take this professor
ET is one of the best teachers I've had in my long and storied academic career. She is the type of teacher that should do a TED talk, and if she did it wouldn't ever be boring. One of the most interesting people I've ever known. I highly recommend taking anything she teaches.
Hands down the best college class I've ever had. She absolutely loves art history and it really shows in class. You get what you put into it. The hw is easy and she has lots of opportunities for extra credit/missing assignments. Probably the nicest teacher you'll ever have. She loves to get to know her students so don't be shy! ET you're amazing!!!
ART 130 (online class) with Mrs. Thoburn was a great experience. She cares about the class and it shows. I learned more about artworks than I would have expected possible in such a short time. The workload--in terms of reading/watching lectures, writing papers and journals, and staying up to speed for exams with the optional quizzes--is demanding.
Mrs. Elisabeth was my favorite professor at Washtenaw. She makes her lectures very interesting. To get an A, do all weekly homeworks, prepare for her in-class essays and quizzes, and do the term project. Attendance is also important. I recommend her for any Humanities-related class.
Look it's as simple as this ET will bend over backwards to make sure you're successful and get the grade you want. Her homework is laid out from the very first day and it's up to you to stay on track. That being said I feel she is very generous with points and really just wants people to engage. I love her style so much I am taking more with her.
Professor Thoburn, Or E.T. ,as she likes to be called, is perhaps one of the best and most knowledgeable professors on the subject of humanities. She is very hands on and interactive with her lessons. She likes for you to get involved and makes sure you have the opportunity to succeed in her classroom. Highly recommended.
It was very lecture heavy due to the amount of information we had to go over, but that did not make it boring. I had a fun time learning about the different cultures through myths. She is a huge traveler and loves to share her experiences with the class. If you participate and engage you will have a fun time, she also makes one on one connections.
Very kind and inspirational. I would love to take another class with her in the future.
If youre willing to put in 2-3 hours/week of homework, youll love this class. I took this class during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic (to think this will be history someday) and the professor helped students adapt to online learning and truly cared about us. Plus shes a cool person and has traveled practically everywhere studied in class!
Due to the pandemic, this class became an online course halfway through. Despite the notable setback, ET made the most out of an adverse situation. The class was an interesting window into various myths found throughout history. ET is tough but fair. She expects you to critically think about the myths presented and the cultures behind them.
ET is really an amazing teacher! I took her Monuments and Culture class, and it was my favorite class that semester. All the class discussions were very interesting, and ET encouraged everyones participation. I took her class Winter 2020 (COVID19 shutdown in middle), and she did a great job converting to online teaching and supporting students.
I took this class in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although I only got to experience half of the class in person because all classes were forced to move online, it was still one of the best classes I have taken so far. Professor Thorburn was nothing but supportive during the crisis and the class itself was very interesting.
She is very passionate about the material and transfers that energy to the rest of the class. Also she has traveled pretty much everywhere so she always has cool artifacts to show to complement the myth we are reading! There is quite a lot of reading but it's very interesting, I think of it as pleasure reading rather than HW
Elisabeth was awesome through the COVID-19 riddled semester. She reached out to us as a class on a regular basis to make sure we were all on pace and safe. There's a fair bit amount of reading from the textbook but it pays dividends for the weekly discussion boards and assignments, making them breeze by if you read the chapters and pages she lists.
I loved this class! I learned so much I didn't already know. The homework that you do is definitely NOT boring! You can really get into the places that E.T. talks about. Her lectures are amazing. I strongly recommend this class to anyone with a passion for other cultures. It is Interesting and fun, you will learn a great deal.
Absolute wonder of an instructor and a person. All around great involvement, personal feedback. This course is not an easy pass, as understanding the material is important for the journals and assignments. I fell short on a few things, but never once did ET knock me for it. Extremely understanding, and caring for your understanding of the material.
Upfront expectations, very personable and generous with time, understanding as long as you communicate before missing deadlines, transparent grading
Professor Thoburn is compassionate and considerate, however online class required a lot of writing, so get your pen and paper ready.
E.T. is probably my favorite teacher EVER, I took 4 classes with her and I enjoyed every single one of them; she is very knowledgeable about the material and is very welcoming to all who enter her classroom, She is very caring and is always willing to help out with whatever her students need (even if it has nothing to do with school work). 10/10
she seemed very interested in the subject matter she was teaching and made it easy to follow along. she creates quizlets for us to use to help prepare the final exam. kind person and seems to want her students to succeed.
ET is easily one of my favorite instructors, which says a lot because it was an online class! Read the course material and watch the lectures, and you will have what you need to succeed in this class. Don't expect an easy A; instead, expect to truly learn a very interesting subject with great help from a great teacher who communicates well.
She is an amazing professor. She really knows how to get students interested and actually gets them to learn the material instead of most and how it is just remember and then regurgitate on the test. She is amazing and I would take her again. You can talk to her about subjects outside of school and I could trust her with my deepest secrets.
ET is an amazing teacher who will expect a lot out of work but is very willing to help students work through their tasks. She is so knowledgeable about Myths and loves to bring in her own experiences and travels.
ET is really good about giving her students feedback and you can really tell she wants her students to improve and succeed. She does have high standards and you will have to work hard for an A. Her class is enjoyable! Lots of writing but always very interesting material! If you put in the time and effort you will enjoy the class.
you are writing around 2 pages a week for this course and reading maybe 20 to 40 pages a week. that being said her lectures are amazing and she keeps you engaged with the content. she puts a lot of effort into her lectures. she is a great teacher. if you have questions she is quick to answer emails. overall great experience and great class.
Really loved ET. She was extremely kind and had a lot of detail to add outside of textbook knowledge. Show up and pass pretty standard.
Very tough grader!
I will start by saying I was very much not looking forward to taking ART 130. Mrs. Thoburn is one of the most understanding professors I have ever had. She gives you the most flexible deadlines you could ask for and gives great feedback. I would suggest taking her for any class, even if you are not a fan of the subject.
ET is one of the best professors I've ever had. The lectures are interesting, the assignments are not too difficult, and the grading is fair with plenty of opportunities for extra credit. I highly recommend this ET and any class she teaches.
Don't know why she has good reviews.. She says to check her comments to improve your journals and I did that. She still kept marking my journals as B EVEN THOUGH I DID WHAT SHE SAID. nothing is enough for her. You are just a number. She probably gives 5 A's and 5 B's and 5 C's to balance her grade book.
This teacher is so bad. She can never give a good grade. In addition to that she is a very tough grader always giving around the c or b range. Take this course if you want to hurt your gpa.
Ms Elisabeth is an incredible professor. Her lectures are very detailed and informative. She welcomes suggestions and is open to discussions.
Professor Thoburn is a very gifted teacher: student centered, clear expectations, invites participation. Strict division/explanation between science and belief issues. A very large amount of knowledge is transmitted in this course.
ET is one of those people who just get it. She is so remarkably empathetic. If you truly put in the effort, you will get a lot out of this class. ET will do everything she can to ensure your success. The class consists of unit essays, homework assignments, a term project, and some misc extra credit. Take one of her classes; you won't regret it.
ET is knowledgeable, expectations are clear, classes are interesting.
ET is one of the easiest and most caring professors you could ask for, and she offers feedback on every assignment so you know how you're doing. Assignment instructions are very clear, but you must read them. As long as you're willing to put forth the effort and communicate with your instructor, ET will always have your back.
ET is an understanding professor who provides great feedback. The workload is manageable if you're willing to put in the effort. I found Unstuckstudy helpful for reviewing class material alongside the textbook.
Surprised this lady has so many great reviews. It feels like this class is about the strength of introductive paragraphs rather than analyzing art. That's all she grades on, and hardly provides any response on the topic of art appreciation at all. I think she needs a reminder that this is an art class and not English 111. So harsh for no reason.
In Thoburn's Art Appreciation course, I learned much more than expected. The content was rich and diverse with beneficial assignments. I grew as a person, student, and writer in her class. The structure was concise and thorough, building on each preceding unit. I can't recommend enough. She was challenging in the best ways. And supportive.
She's a nice professor but she's a very tough grader takes points off for little things and the class is a lot of work feels like more work than my 4 credit classes. But she is a fast grader!
Great teacher, very understanding and willing to work with students.
This class truly dimmed my interest in art. She was an extremely tough grader and very accusatory of using AI. I never used AI, but I had to somewhat dumb down my papers to stop being accused. I was most looking forward to this class that semester, but I hated it the most. I will never take another art class after this experience.
Professor Thoburn was always accessible, responded promptly and thoroughly to any questions. She was a very fair grader, and always provided excellent feedback. She was lenient on late work and deducted minimal points for late assignments. Very fair, as long as you're participating and following the assignment instructions, you'll pass this class.
Very unprofessional messages to the class, and an extremely tough grader. I'd recommend taking a different teachers art class.
She's a tough grader for sure and takes off points for a lot of unnecessary things, like wording instead of the content we write about. There was SOO much writing, it felt like an English class more than art sometimes. She is somewhat lenient about late work, but not always. Almost never grants extensions, and when she does, she's rude about it.
