She's a really funny, interesting person, but her lectures are unorganized and unclear. She does give out a study guide before tests, which is very helpful. This was definitely her first time teaching, hopefully she'll be a little more clear in her classes next semester.
She's pretty unorganized and has a tendency to go off track during her lectures, but there's a lot of opportunity for class discussion. 3 papers, a midterm and a final with good study guides. She's a fun person and a pretty easy grader.
her lectures can be unorganized and boring. However, she is a damn good teacher, she is really funny has a ton of stories that portray soc. well. honestly every class felt like a discussion rather than a formal lecture...which i loved. people are only complaining bc her test are kinda hard, but the key doing her study guide and reading. easy A fo sh
She is an amazing teacher. Really funny. Knows what she is talking about. And he lectures are great and they include good discussions. I have no clue what the hell these people are talking about here! She is an amazing teacher, take her!
Such an easy class. Anyone that says her tests are difficult clearly never went to class. She gives out very clear cut study guides for each test. There is some reading, depending on how you study and if you pay attention in class. Very friendly, very helpful, really cares about her students. She talks to you, not at you.
One of the nicest professors I have had so far! She is always understanding and willing to help you out, i.e. pushing deadlines. She has a tendency to go off track in her lectures and her tests can be a little difficult at times, but she provides a study guide so if you complete that, you should be good to go.
Really Good Prof. 2 exams and 2-3 Assignments Response Papers Throughout Semester Overall Easy Would Take Again.
As long as she doesn't hate you, she is very fair and the class is easy. Show up at least 2 times a week, write what she wants to hear in the papers, you'll do well.
She's so sweet and the class isn't hard at all. She grades the papers fairly easy and if you ask her questions before you write it she will basically tell you what she wants you to say in the papers. She's really chill I'd take her again in a heartbeat.
Cohen is dope. She's really great at taking a subject like sociology, that can easily be boring, into something really interesting. Most of the class is response papers to real life events with a sociological lens. Her study guides are really extensive so you barely need the textbook. You'll get an A if you put in the work. Highly recommend.
Professor Cohen is very funny and tells personal stories. She can be a little disorganized sometimes, but as long as you study a decent amount for her tests, they are very fair and easy and she tells you exactly what you need to know for them. Her lectures are interesting and engaging. She is really nice and understanding!!
Really enjoyed her class, very down to earth, real topics and related it to real world situations. Very intelligent and you learn a lot from the class even if you aren't going into research sociology.
I LOVED professor Cohen! she's so sweet, nice and genuine. She truly wants the best for each student. She is dedicated and only wants you to succeed. Try to go every class because even though attendance isn't mandatory, she will notice when you're gone. Tests were straight-forward and easy, and we have about 2/3 major papers.
She is honestly a great professor. She is always willing to take her time to work with students and truly values everyones opinion even though she is super liberal. She is very understanding when it comes to late work and whatnot as long as you let her know. She doesn't give quizzes but assigns papers; and a lot of them. However, they aren't hard.
Cohen was a great teacher. She can be a little scattered brain which might make things seem unclear, but she acknowledges the fact that she can be scattered-brain, and she is more than willing to clarify if you just ask. She keeps the prompts and guidelines vague, but that is only to benefit the students-it allows the students true input.
This woman kicks major booty. She made me passionate about the social sciences and i changed my major because of her to a social science from biology. She is extremely passionate about sociology as well as her students understanding and learning. She is truly one of the best professors i have ever had.
Dr. Cohen is the perfect combination: easy and interesting!
Doctor Elise Martel Cohen is incredibly passionate. She is the first professor who showed me she cared about her students as human beings, her attitude is incredible every single day, and she is startlingly intelligent. She has the wisdom of the ages and an insatiable spirit for academia; DON'T LEAVE LUC w/o taking her class!
Dr. Cohen is a very nice and sweet professor! She is very laid back and easy but don't take advantage of that because she will notice. She is an easy grader and her exams (1 midterm and a final) are not that bad. She gives about 8-10 writing assignments but three of them are major yet very doable. She is a little unorganized but know her stuff.
She is full of spunk and always has a story to go along with what she was teaching. You have to do 4 small responses and 3 papers, plus the midterm and final. All her powerpoints are online. She really cares bout her students benefiting from her teachings. Overall she was great.
I love this women so much, She is the nicest, she loves what she does, and there class has 3 big papers, and 4 small responses, and she gives a lot of Extra credit. she's so helpful an open minded and loves to hear what you say. Her class is very easy and interesting.
Dr. Cohen is one of the best professors I've had at Loyola. She assigns 4 short papers, a midterm, and a final, all of which are very easy to complete. Lectures consist of her talking and starting conversations with the students for most of the time. Definitely willing to help and change things to fit your needs. Would take again over anyone else!
Dr Cohen is an Easy A teacher! Lectures are kinda boring but I was not very interested in what we were talking about. I would grind a full day of studying to get an A on the test. Very Easy Grader and fairly easy workload!
She is one of my favorite professors! Take her SOCL 101 class. It is kinda hard if you're not really interested in the material but all in all totally worth it!
She is pretty awesome. Just make sure to do her readings and the 3 short (2 page) papers. She gives a detailed study guide, but trust me, you'll be prepared for the exam. The workload is not heavy, just make sure to read and answer study questions. I love her and she's so chill. Would take her again and again. I had SOCL101 with her.
She's awesome. She may seem strict, but she's super easy and chill. Totally young & open minded. Kind of careless too. However, there's just 3 easy 2 page papers and one final long paper w/ 3 exams. Just study and keep up with work & you'll be fine. She literally gives us answers to her responses on exams through class work. Trust me, take her.
Very caring and engaging but disorganized. I think she tried to change up her 101 syllabus & grading system and so it was chaos. Her lectures were usually pretty scattered but always interesting and engaging I just never felt like I was learning. We never really defined concepts it was just all examples. Every lecture turned into a group story time
One of the best professors I've had so far. Exams were a little tougher than previous semesters so study hard. Take home final was super clutch
Loved this professor, she was great with connecting to the class. Tests were a little hard, but if you read the material and go to class it isnt hard. She provided real life examples and related it to sociological concepts. Only downside, she expressed her political views too often. Great professor and would highly recommend you take this class
I strongly recommend this professor. Like other reviews mentioned, she did change up her syllabus a little bit from previous semesters, but she did her best to make sure the class was more than fair. Exams are NOT DIFFICULT if you study the study guides! She tells you exactly what you need to know! Easy A if you treat this like an actual class!
The class was interesting and easy but if you need a course that is organized and structured, do not take her. She awards a lot of extra credit and is lenient in the way she grades essays but she changed her syllabus so frequently that it was difficult to calculate a grade and the majority of assignments were pushed back to the end of the semester.
Best professor ever. Does everything she can to help students. She cares so much about every student's work regardless of how much she has going on outside,to a point that I worry she's over-exerting herself. It's a shame that this was an intro level class so not all her students put in as much effort as she deserved. GO TO HER OFFICE HOUR!
Professor MC is a really sweet and passionate individual. A little eccentric, but the best professors usually are. You can tell she really knows what she's talking about, though she does go off on tangents. The course wasn't too hard but did require a bit of reading. Overall, she's a solid choice for a professor.
Such a NICE professor! Passionate about her class and very easy grader. Do the study guide and you'll be prepared for her exams. She gives a lot of extra credit and grades super easy on her reading responses and the final paper. The final exam was take home and it was all short answers no time limit. If you talk in class she'll love you.
THE BEST sociology professor at Loyola hands down!! If you need to take SOC 101, I would highly recommend her, easy class and a great professor. You dont need to attend all the lectures as long as your readings are current and the tests are fairly easy if you study.
She is a super sweet person but the class is an absolute joke. No papers except for extra credit. I skipped this class 40% of the time but as long as you read the powerpoints the night before you'll get an A or B on the exams. Lectures are interesting if you go but can get very political at times. Interesting class.
Love her!! tells great stories and wants to hear from all her students so participate!! never came off as rude or standoffish. No papers but extra credit and gives study guides exactly like her tests. There are a lot of readings so keep up with them and she goes over them in class.
really able to apply the stuff to real life. awesome teacher!
There were a lot of extra articles Cohen wants you to read but they were all easy to read. She's very passionate about sociology and she likes hearing students' experiences and opinions so participation is important.
Dr. Cohen was AMAZING! This class was so interesting and really impacted me. Has nothing to do with my major but really made going to class worth it. For a CORE class, this was probably one of my favorites. USE THE TEXTBOOK STUDY WEBSITE. DO THE STUDY GUIDES! You'll do great if you do so!
Professor Martel-Cohen is amazing. She easily moves through the content of the course and as a result lectures often turn to discussions about current events. The tests are exceedingly easy, and made even easier by the fact that she makes a study guide beforehand. Readings are helpful, but not entirely necessary.
Dr. Cohen is the best! She makes sociology really interesting and gives a lot of examples that help you understand. So many extra credit opportunities, so do them! She makes study guides that are very helpful, and take practice quizzes for the chapters on bookshelf website! They help. There are readings but don't worry- they're discussed in class
Best professor I have had so far. If you can, take her class! She is very knowledgeable and I thoroughly enjoyed going to her class. Tests are easy and gives extra credit on every test as well as a few extra credit paper options. Go to her office hours and talk in class because participation matters. She is amazing, take her class!
Best most understanding Professor I have had. She truly cares about supporting students through what is usually one of the hardest classes we take: statistics. She made stats accessible and is sooo flexible when students struggle with it. She is also a genius in this field. If you're a SOCL major, take her atleast once.
Lots of readings, but they're all discussed in depth during class and she posts all the slides. You can either show up to every class and never read, or do all the readings and occasionally show up for class. Her lectures are amazing, and she really does make sociology something you want to keep exploring. Would take again!
There are weekly pop quizzes that cover the previous night's reading. Worth 2 points: 1 point is just writing your name. Exams are literally just the study guides that she hands out the week before. Lectures are very interesting and cover many different topics about the world we live in. She loves people who participate. Offers extra credit.
Couldnt have asked for a better instructor for the class. She is a straight forward teacher, do what is asked and you will do fine. She is super friendly and open to all types of questions. Id recommend not skipping lecture because she covers a lot of topics that wont be posted online. If you show up to her class and participate- easy A.
1 midterm 1 final, participation is key to success. best prof this semester. really cares for her students, was sick the day of the midterm and she let me take it later. textbook is not used, mostly supplemental readings. she loves discussion. offers ec. her smaller classes write papers, her bigger ones don't.
One of my favorite professors ever! Really caring, and makes sure the entire class knows what to expect on tests/quizzes.
She's a good choice for Socio core. Caring and understands most of us don't read. Pop quizzes every once and a while, one point if you write your name and one point if you answer correctly, one midterm, one final, and participation. You can get away with not reading. Interesting topics.
Such an interesting class, she really makes a lecture worth it. She uses stories form her own life as well as ours to help us understand the material, and it really helps.
Dr. Martel Cohen is one of Loyola's best professors! She is very friendly, accommodating, and knows that we have other stress from other things in our lives. She talks about her personal experiences which help you understand the content too. Class consists of 3 exams (non-cumulative), 2 reflection papers per exam (total of 6), and participation.
Dr. Martel Cohen is a gem. She is so passionate about sociology, and she gives lectures that are fun to listen to. She also understands that we have lives outside her class, and is very accommodating. I suggest going to office hours and getting to know her! She's overall amazing, and I would recommend taking her.
She is an amazing professor. Her class is somewhat lecture heavy, but her lectures are fun and inviting. She cracks jokes all the time and really understands that we all have lives outside of Loyola (including herself). She will change deadlines and move exams back, if needed. If you need something, go to her, she will help you.
Dr. Martel-Cohen is one of the best professors at Loyola! She does lecture for most of the classes, but they are funny and enjoyable. The content is interesting and she is very engaging. She is also one of the most flexible professors I've ever had -- see her if you ever need help or extra time for an assignment!
Almost all semester is listing to her lecture. That being said they are all very interesting and just require you to listen. Very engaging and understanding. Take for SOCL101 you won't regret it!
I took Professor Martel for SOCL-101 and she was great. I was struggling with many things in my life throughout the semester and once she found out she would send me emails and check on me every few weeks. If you're willing to do the work for her papers and assignment you will have no trouble having an A, and she's always available for her students
One of my favorite professors, one of the nicest people I've met. Absolutely amazing. Class discussions are the best part, and Professor Martel Cohen is absolutely fantastic. She really cares about all her students and is so easy to talk to. Take her as much as you can!!
She is a very sweet and helpful lady. I thought her class was kind of disorganized which is why I rated her a 4. Class doesnt require a lot of work and is a very easy A. Take her if you can!
WE DO NOT DESERVE THIS ANGEL. You will never meet a more understanding teacher. She's so amazing, she's the best and nicest professor I've ever had. I loved going to her class and I wish I could take her every semester. MOST UNDERSTANDING!!!!
TAKE PROFESSOR MARTEL!!! She is amazing and the most helpful and understanding professor that I've had at Loyola. There's a lot of articles and concepts to read and understand but the grade at the end is so worth it. This class is an easy grade booster, just don't slack off and push through to the end. If you do the work you'll succeed.
She really makes sociology interesting and always asks about personal stories (regarding the talked about topic) that the students have to make the class more engaging. There's a lot of reading, almost everyday, but she tries to pick interesting ones or have a movie every once in a while. She's very caring about her students and very helpful.
So sweet and so accommodating and considerate. Lectures are very interesting. A lot of people skip this class, but I didn't mind going since they were so interesting to listen to anyway. Definitely take her take her take her if you can. You will LOVE her, I promise.
Prof. Cohen is such a caring and kinda professor, and even though the class is huge, I feel like I really connected with her a lot of the time. Her lectures are so entertaining and you don't have to read much. I learned a lot and had a lot of interesting discussions. She's super understanding and i can't stress how amazing of a person/prof she is.
Professor Martel Cohen is honestly one of the best educators I've ever had. She truly cares about her students and is so passionate about teaching. She explains things really well and the textbook is a non-conventional pay-per-chapter book which is so nice. I really recommend her because she's amazing!
Dr. Cohen is amazing. Although she makes us read a lot, she is so understanding and makes sure to create a safe space to discuss anything at all. She really cares about her students and the topics she discusses are relevant and interesting. She's a solid choice for core.
Dr. Martel is super kind, accessible outside of class, and very knowledgeable. She is a queen 10/10
Dr. Martel is one of the best professors that I have ever had. If you are anxious about having to take this stats course, fear not. Dr Martel explains the content clearly and makes it easy to understand. She is extremely understanding of the current situation and is always willing to give students extensions when necessary. Seriously, such a gem.
Dr. Martel is one of the best professors I've had at LUC. She cares so much about her students as people and takes time out of class to give us space to share what we're going through. Stats is hard and she does a great job of helping you understand the material. I strongly recommend taking statistics with her.
Dr. Martel truly cares about her students. During her lectures she usually allows a good portion of class for students to share their thoughts or experiences. To get an A you just need to go to class and review her notes. No textbook reading is really required. Only complaint was that class was sometimes all over the place and hard to follow.
Dr. Martel Cohen is my FAVORITE professor at Loyola. I took sociology spring 2021 just to get it out of the way and she made it super fun and enjoyable. The exams were super easy - basically if you show up and have common sense you can get an A with no/minimal studying. Super engaging and loves to let students to weigh in! Take her!!!
Honestly, Dr. Martel is just great lol. She is super helpful if you have questions or if you need to miss class, and is super understanding. Her class is structured really well and I love how much of voice students are given even though lectures are supposed to be more of a listening thing. She really cares for her students and loves what she does!
Professor Martel is amazing! My first semester here at Loyola and am SO glad to have had her as my professor. She is incredibly kind and understanding. Goes over readings during lectures and makes them fun and interesting. Loved her class! Highly recommend taking her class!
Read the readings and write thoughtful essays and you'll pass with large margin. Left thoughtful comments on my papers that showed she read them and offered good feedback. Was generally really nice and kinda funny.
Dr. Martel is an amazing prof! Her exams were online and you really didn't need to study for them. She hands out a lot of reading but admits that many students only read the important selections she highlights. At times her lectures weren't super clear, but occasionally, and you can tell she's super passionate! Her class was really fun to take!
SOCL 240. No tests, presentation and paper that is broken down into parts. You don't have to go to class but I really suggest it. Her class is fun to be part of and is really chill. Highly suggest taking her if you can!
Take this class! Prof. Martel is passionate about what she teaches and wants to make sure everyone understands the material. Her lectures are always fun to go to. She has a clear grading system. Do the homework and read the assigned readings and you will do great.
Easy class. All exams are online and homework consists of watching crash course videos and responding to a couple of questions. She teaches very well and is very passionate about the field. Only con I will say is that she's liberal and you can tell in the content she chooses to make you read; wish there were more viewpoints.
This was a super easy class and she was super chill. The class wasn't mandatory and I was not there quite a few times, and still finished with an A+. The lectures were quite boring to me. The exams were online, the essays were easy, and nothing was a true challenge.
This is the first rate my professor I have ever written (I hope that says something). I took this class first semester of my freshman year and still think about it. She is always open for discussion and interpretation and really wants to hear everybody's personal opinions but does not force anybody to talk. Take her take her take her!!!
Dr. Martel is so awesome. I had to take this class for a core requirement, but she made it so interesting and enjoyable to go to class. She barely assigns homework, but there is a lot of reading (expected for a sociology class though). All exams are online and there are 2 papers due near the end of the semester. She is a great option for SOCL 101!!
Dr. Martel is SUCH a kind, caring, and accessible professor! On top of that, she's the best math teacher I've ever had. She really cares about making her content understandable and reasonable while also being consistent, understanding, and available to her students. For stats, Dr. Martel is a perfect option for professor.
Dr. Martel is such a fun professor. This is a perfect tier 1 societal core class. I can't recommend her enough. Just turn in the work and you will have an A.
Favorite class of the whole semester. Professor Martel is an entertaining and informative lecturer. Pretty easy grader and her tests aren't too bad as long as you go to class. I cannot recommend her enough
I can count the number of times I attended class on my hands and earned an A. Lectures can be dull sometimes but she always works to engage the class with discussions by asking for opinions. Easy core, so take her if you get the chance!
She is such an understanding and funny professor.
Dr. Elise is an incredible person and professor. She's very understanding and was always willing to give extra time for assignments. The assignments themselves were very straightforward and easy. Both exams were online. The lectures were pretty interesting; it's a lot of info but still not a stressful class at all. I definitely recommend
I cannot stress how much I love her!!!! PLEASE TAKE HER IF YOU CAN. She is very attentive, always willing to listen, and considerate. I usually skip lectures if attendance is not mandatory and I attended almost all her lectures which tells you something. Homework and exams were pretty straightforward and she gave good feedback.
Dr. Martel is the kindest soul who only wants to see her students succeed in the class. She's very understanding and easy to get help from, but also is willing to hear out students when the workload becomes overwhelming. Very few assignments throughout the semester, lots of readings you don't need to read, an essay, and two exams. Fun class to take
Dr. Martel is such a caring and amazing professor and is so passionate about the subject. This is one of the easiest classes I have taken. Lots of reading that you do not need to do mid-term exams and papers are so easy and her grading is so easy. She loves to hear from other people and is open to other's ideas. Genuinely amazing.
Dr. Martel is an all-timer. Super flexible and caring as a person. The syllabus might seem like a lot, but she'll probably change or take out assignments as the semester goes on. You read a lot of interesting material and do some great work. 10/10 truly an awesome experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Martel's class. She is extremely nice and caring, super accessible outside of class, and has very interesting and engaging lectures. We had little to no homework, a paper, and a final. However, she went off-topic a lot, so sometimes it was hard to follow along.
I really loved Dr.Martel. We had multiple long reading everyweek but I only did like 3 throughout the entire semester and ended up with an A. Super laid back and chill. If you need socl101 for core, definetly take her.
It was one of the few classes this year I looked forward to going to. As someone who is not going to end up studying in another sociology class it was a great introduction to a really cool topic. I also loved the stats references!
Two online exams, one essay, around ten assignments. She is such a caring and lovely professor with unique insight onto the sociological issues. Come with an open and expressive mind and you will love her class. I genuinely wished I went to her office hours, since she was such a fun person to talk to about sociology, but I will do that next year.
You can tell when she starts to speak how intelligent she is and she truly cares about each student. She has lectures of 150+ kids and still makes an effort to learn names. She has very clear grading criteria and will give you an extension if you ask for one.
While there is a good amount of reading, its a pretty simple class and would highly rec! Her lectures can be a bit out of order sometimes but she is so funny, loves teaching the topics, and makes it so interesting to learn about. 2 exams and 1 paper, a few assignments here and there but usually are simple, also lots of extra credit opportunities!
PLEASE TAKE HER she is absolutely amazing!! Her lectures are great and she's super kind and funny. Grading is very chill - as long as you show effort you're good. Attendance isn't mandatory but I always go to her lectures. Tons of extra credit opportunities if you (somehow) miss something. TAKE HER TAKE HER TAKE HER!!
TAKE HER!!! She is the sweetest professor, very chill, and super funny. She is so understanding and gives you a lot of time for all the assignments and tests. There are 2 exams, an essay and a few assignments. She is honestly the best professor I've ever had and I really enjoyed her class.
TAKE HER. Best professor I have ever had and so many extra credit opportunities. She uses textbook but I did not use it and still passed the class with an A! Love her!!
She is so sweet. Make sure to read the syllabus carefully, as she leaves little easter eggs for extra credit. The midterm and the final are online, and there is only one paper that is very simple and straightforward. Not a lot of homework, and a very easygoing grader.
grade consists of a midterm, paper, final, and a couple of homework assignments. attendance was self reported. textbook readings were provided along with guided reading questions which were super helpful for the exams. great lecturer and offers extra credit! i loved attending dr. martel's class :)
Dr. Martel is a true wonder. Everything she has gone through in her life, and she still shows up to teach every day with enthusiasm and love for the subject. You can tell she truly wants her students to get something MORE out of the class. Lectures can be a little confusing; however, very few homework assignments, quizzes, and exams are very easy.
Dr. Martel Cohen is such a good person. She cares very much about all her students and provides all the help we may need if we have trouble with anything. She is also very inviting when it comes to OH and is such a warm presence to be around. Overall, 10/10, she is the best.
Literal QUEEN! If you want a class that it very easy (all online exams + a paper) or want a class that is interesting to listen to, Martel is the woman for you. As someone who tries to take the easy route for all cores, her lectures honestly made me want to come even if I wasn't going to try on the assignments or exams.
Martel is amazing. She's the sweetest person ever and you know she cares about her students. Her lectures were entertaining, though often kind of unorganized and she changed around due dates of stuff a lot (pushing them back). However, it's still super easy to get a good grade, the tests were multiple choice and I never really did the readings.
AMAZING professor! She is very caring, will learn your name if you participate in class, is funny, and genuinely wants to engage with students. 2 short papers, homework assignments, online at-home midterm, choice of a paper (1 of the 2) or exam for the final. We were allowed 4 absences, there's a sign in sheet for attendance.
Dr. Cohen he's a great person and cares for her students and wants you to learn. There are quite a few assignments (not listed on the syllabus keep in mind) that she will give out which weren't bad pretty easy tbh. Two exams and she gives you a study guide for it. The essay was EASY she gave a month to do it and I did it in 2 days. TAKE HER!
Dr. Martel is a great option for sociology. She clearly cares about students--she encourages participation and learns names even in a 150 person lecture hall. The material of the class itself is interesting and she lectures in a way where it's digestible. The workload is fair. There's rarely homework, and lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Professor Cohen is such a caring, kind professor. There are lots of readings, but you can get my skimming as she discusses them in class. Midterm was online. Content is manageable, a few assignments, and the final paper was fun to write. For my section, she decided we could either turn in the paper or complete the online final exam. Take her!!!
Best professor for a core you could possibly take. She changes the schedule from the syllabus a lot, but it was always to the students benefit. She ended up making our midterm online at home, gave us a choice bt a paper we already had to write and taking the final exam, and offered a ton of extra credit. She takes attendance, allows 4 absences.
She is the best professor for socl. take herrrrr, very easy assignments and she's not a harsh grader. Love her sm
She is absolutely the best! Cares SO MUCH about each of her students even though there are 100+ students. Very interesting topics we covered! Quite a bit of reading but she usually goes over it. She goes off the syllabus a lot of time but its always in advantage to students. Literally the kindest person ever and you should totally take her!
She is an amazing professor and I would definitely take her class again! Attendance is self-reported, there are a few assignments but she is an easy grader, and she makes classes very engaging!
