love love love her! not to be confused with the so-called "lab coordinator" whose name is Gervasi. Elise is SUPER helpful and never turns down a question and demonstrates labs! She has an awesome sense of humor and actually wants you to do well. RIDICULOUS amount of work for a 1 credit lab, but she helps you through it.
Such an amazing professor! She is actually interesting to listen to, makes a 400 level class easy to understand and her exams are more than fair if you go to class and pay attention. She offers homework, quizzes and participation points to help boost your grade. She also drops the lowest exam and a few quizzes.
Elise is the best biology professor I've had here at UAlbany. Her lectures are usually very interesting, and you need to be present in them to understand the material (there aren't much notes on the slides). She offers quizzes and homework to boost your grade and drops a test. Overall amazing professor.
Very good professor sometimes goes a little fast but really easy to follow. Bio II with her was really good. She is easy to talk to and easy to get ahold of. I'd recommend taking this class with her.
Excellent professor. Easy to follow and explains things very well. Does a go a bit too fast but thats inevitable since the amount of info to cover in BIO 2 is a lot. I would recommend. 15 pop quizzes, 15 online HW's 2 exams 1 final exam that is worth as much as 2 exams read everyday, do your hw, and go to class and you will get an A
Dr. Gervais was an awesome professor. I would love to take more classes with her if I could. It's a lot of information, so it is tough. This is not her fault, the school wants it all. The textbook is way more wordy than necessary, but if you print out her pre-lecture slides and take notes on those, you will have the material you need.
Dr. Gervais is easily the best biology professor I have had at UAlbany. Every class is exciting and I always learn. She does move fast but when it is an upper level you have to expect that! Definitely worth taking any class with. Her exams are challenging but with some effort you can do very well.
Gervais is sweet and you can tell she's really passionate about Biology. She knows her stuff and really tries to teach you. Her tests are very hard though, you're gonna need to put a lot of effort in it. She's a great professor and if possible I'd want her to teach all my bio classes.
I have had Dr. Gervais for 3 classes and I would take her again if i had a chance. Test are not bad if you actually study and go over notes. Shes always willing to help and easy to talk to. Class never ends without a laugh. Talk to her and she will clear up any misunderstandings. If you don't wanna come to class you probably won't pass.
Great personality, tries her best to impliment student feedback. Very interested in the topic, goes fast paced with the lectures, but is almost always available outside of class. Test are difficult eapecially if you dont keep up with the readings and make sure you understand what is being taught. If you depend on just the reading, you will NOT pass
Professor Gervais is an awesome teacher and her lectures are actually pretty interesting. GenBio is a ton of info but you can stay on top of it by reading ahead before lecture. Make sure you study her lecture slides before tests and go to office hours for anything you might not understand. she is super approachable and friendly
A LOT OF WORK
Good amount of free points: Quizzes/Tests. But, people tend to do poorly on the quizzes. ''Okay'' exams. Class average for 1/2nd exam 65/70 respectively. The class is very difficult. There is a lot of outside work that needs to be done. 93 is an A+. 80 is a B-. So, grading scale is a bit irrational. Obviously, there is tht 10% who will get an A.
Dr. Gervais is excellent. She gives lots of bonus points to accommodate class average. Always willing to answer your questions during office hours. However, you have to do your part in studying hard. it's a lot of material to cover. I am looking forward to take her again for my higher level courses. She is great
took physiology with her. GREAT TEACHER. worst multiple choice exams. also a very bad grading system. a point grading system that doesnt favor the students. she tries her best to help and i appreciated it. but the grading system really does not help. very difficult to get an A. My exam grades are stellar but i got a Bplus. it was not fair.
Her lectures are AMAZING!!! She is not the type to just read off her slides, and repeats things until mostly everyone understands. But, her tests can be hard and are NOT curved which is a bummer since there are only 35 question, 5 points a piece and majority of your grade relies on exams. One gets dropped but still, it can hurt you if you screw 1/2
Professor Gervais is a good teacher, in lecture she acts all sweet but when you go to her office hours or ask a question she is rude. She acts as if you are five years old. Not only that but her tests can be extremely unfair, you need to make sure to know every little detail to do well in her class.
Gervais is passionate about biology and gives great lectures. With that said, I agree with the person below that she seems sweet but is condescending outside of class when you ask a question. The tests are based on the lecture slides and are seemingly easy but you will get screwed on tiny details. Unsure if I'd want to take a class with her again..
She is very rude, and I don't think she realizes that, but she is. The class is exam heavy, even though clicker polls and hwk are part of your grade. You've got to study for exams, they're not just based off of slides. She ALWAYS has 1/2 questions that she briefly mentioned in lecture and aren't on slides so pay attention! Prob wouldn't take again.
I liked this professor. I found it best to take notes from her lecture (not the slides) during class and went home to put the two together. Often talks way too fast and moves through the slides too fast but will show down and repeat herself if asked. Really pushes IBASS but truthfully my exam scores went up each time I went.
Professor Gervais was one of the best, she had a clear grading criteria from the beginning and was always willing to explain something if it wasn't clear. It is not hard to do well in her class as long as you study hard for the tests and go to class. The only bad thing is her poster project is worth a ton of points and it is very tedious.
Professor Gervais is one of the best teachers I had. She is a little fasted paced if you had Professor Mayerhofer the semester before for Gen Bio. You have to come to class to pass, she uses iclicker and her lectures go over things that aren't in the lecture slides. She talks a little fast. Sadly she doesn't give extra credit. Loves doing her job.
Loved her! She was always in IBASS after lecture in case people had questions. Don't bother to buy the textbook. The tests are based on what she says in lecture. I suggest joining an A-Plus cluster at the science library. SHE DOES NOT CURVE. Her tests can be tough, but I 100% would recommend if you don't make excuses. Write down what she SAYS.
This is one of the best prof.s I've ever had. She can talk a little fast (you can record her lectures), but she is very clear with everything she says. Her passion for the subject will force you to learn every single thing she says. Super relatable, and just an excellent professor. She is my idea of an ideal professor.
If you go to class and take notes, do the homework on mastering bio, this class will be easy. You will have to study. Tests are fair all multiple choice. She might curve depending on entire class grading.
Tough teacher because she has high expectations, but she will do everything she can to help you do well. One of the few professors that actually makes adjustments based off student feedback. You have to get over her fast pace and record the lectures. If it's your first time taking her class just give her a chance, she really is a great professor!
One of the best professors I've had at UAlbany. Bring energy and enthusiasm and has a passion for teaching.
Dr. Gervais is a fantastic professor, so enthusiastic and will do anything to help you learn. 4 exams (drop lowest) 12 online hw's (drop 2 lowest) 12 blackboard quizzes (drop 2 lowest) and a sensory phys. project make up your grade. Grades on a 1000 point scale so racking up points in the HW, quiz and project categories leaves wiggle room on exams
I took two classes with Dr. Gervais, and she is definitely by far the greatest biology professor in the school. She is very understandable of how hard biology students workload is, so she allows quizzes to be dropped, even a test to be dropped. She encourages us to go to her office hours if we have any questions and she is very chill.
Dr. Gervais is a very upbeat teacher. Especially because biology can be boring at times. She keeps you awake and her notes are very clear. The tests aren't hard if you show up, listen, and study. Pretty basic class, better than than the professor for ABIO 130.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. She is clear and makes lecture engaging and interesting. She goes over material plenty and makes even more difficult concepts easy to understand thru repetition and her style. Tests are not difficult if you put in a reasonable amount of effort. She is great and truly wants you to succeed.
Very personable and easy to talk to. Very upfront about grading so you know what you need to do to get the grade you want.
One of the best professors I have ever had! She uses no information from the textbook, the tests are easy and she explains information in the slides very clearly.
She speeds through lectures and does not clarify information when asked. There are many discrepancies between what she says and what the correct information is. Tests are extremely confusing and she does not curve. If you took Mayerhofer before her, be prepared to do 10x worse in this class because it is much more confusing and difficult.
Lectures are online but uses clickers so be in class. Shes a good teacher who cares and knows what shes talking about, but lectures can get boring. Homework is easy , study for tests !
I love her!!! her class. It's straight forward but every detail counts, one word can trip you up on a question during an exam. But during lectures, you can see how passionate she is about Biology! She's also very helpful, funny, and extremely kind! Would definitely take another class with her in the future!
I adore Dr. Gervais! There are only 2 written tests with 11 topics each but you only complete 7 of your choice for credit! I studied about 8-9 topics for each test and got A's on both. Quizzes just about every day, super simple 5 questions one word answers. She drops a handful of them! Got over a 100 as my final grade! 10/10 need to take this class
Clickers every class. She talks really fast so try to pay attention and write down key points for what she is saying. Copy slides outside of class, youre going to need to listen to what she says the most. Look at test study guide and look up EVERY single point!! Test answers are very similar. GO TO IBASS before every test at least a week before
She talks extremely fast, extremely. She is also extremely condescending, it's almost embarrassing to the student. Just be sure you have a lot of confidence if you ask a question in her lecture. Other than that, Gen Bio is Gen Bio, some topics are harder than others. other than that it was okay.
This class is definitely tough but if you do the powerpoint notes before class, go to class, do the homework, and study you'll be absolutely fine. Prof Gervais is an awesome teacher, she makes complex things make sense by providing relatable examples. She does allow you to miss some classes without hurting your grade which is nice.
She is an amazing professor and provides you with all of the information you need to succeed. She gives you all the materials you need to be successful and is extremely supportive and helpful.
Such a wonderful woman. She is very understanding and caring about her students. There are only 5 exams throughout the semester, and none are curved. Part of the grade calculation is attendance and participation, so if you don't show up to lecure it will effect your grade.
I highly recommend having Elise Gervais as your professor for Bio!! Because of her teaching style, I decided to stick with my biology major after not doing so well Fall semester. Attend her lectures because it's her teaching style and the way she explains the material that makes the class less challenging. Go to IBASS as well-- she wants us to pass
I really love Dr. Gervais, she really cares about her students and puts in a lot of effort during lecture to make sure we understand the context. She talks fast, but if you really pay attention you can follow along. Her grading policy is very precise and she overall wants you to pass! Textbook isn't really necessary, but going to IBASS is great!!
She tells you what to expect from her at the beginning of the semester. Drops the lowest grades. She doesn't curve on her exams.
makes bio interesting. Lectures are amazing and show she cares about her students. Always offering to help her students out. homework is light, easy 100. Recording lectures was very helpful because she does talk pretty fast. other than that this is the best professor you can take for bio 131!
Taking Professor Gervais class was amazing. She explained the lectures in clear detail. I would probably review the lecture slides prior to class so it isn't too unfamiliar. The test are self explanatory making it easier. Go to IBASS and you will definietely get a A. The way that she lectures keeps the students engaged which we really appreciated
She's really nice, it's easy to get an A if you just stay on top of the homework which is fairly easy as well. She gives extra credit so it's an easy A but you just have to do the discussion posts, weekly quizzes, self-checks. She's caring and tries to make sure everyone is understanding it, overall a great professor I would take her again.
I really liked having Gervais as a professor this semester! Her lectures are really good, she's super nice, and the content of the class is interesting. I really like that she has a set and consistent assignment schedule with predetermined due dates for the entire semester- it really helped me stay on top of things. There are also no major tests!
She is a very nice professor. Gives a lot of bonus questions which are easy to answer if you attend her lectures. Also explains the material really well. Her class is very enjoyable. Would totally recommend.
5 question clicker quizzes and participation every day at the start of class, a hormone signaling project, and weekly journals make up the grade. Honestly, an easy A and she discussed a lot of covid physiology so it was actually interesting. Only thing is that it was at 8am on Monday morning.
Theres so much you can say about this Professor, but I fell in love with her lectures up until the immunology unit and neuromuscular junction unit. It was kinda hard. However, she toss curve balls or such and extra credit coming out of Covid season. Really useful for the MCAT Biology setting in terms of Physiology and regular biology. No exams too
Not the worst, but the clicker is annoying. Too big of classes for her to see or know you. I spent the whole class catching up on one piece so enjoyed it. All of the graded material is online so you can get at least an 80 even if you don't try. Seems like she knows what she is talking about. Would take again.
She has good rating for previous years because before she did not give lecture quizzes. she gives her students lecture quizzes now and expects us to remember info for 2-3 lectures does not give us any clue what to focus on. She tells us to use ibas but they don’t know how to help us bc they didn’t have lecture quizzes and were useless
Attendance is not mandatory, you can do a 3 question makeup for participation credit of you miss. Waymaker is used so like 2-3 hours a week doing quizzes and practice that is pretty and you can see the correct answer. She gives great lectures. She cares about her students. Lecture quiz online twice a month I average 85-90s not bad.
the hardest part about this class is the lecture quizzes that she gives out. and then for the waymaker quizzes, once you get further into the semester you will have 2 to 3 due all on the same night. the waymaker quizzes consists of reading and self checks, along with a quiz.
She is very engaging during lectures and checks throughout for questions and clarification. She drops a lot of grades so failing this class is very hard you would have to actively try. Tests are exactly what you learn in lectures and hw and quizzes will prepare you well there are easy participation make-ups if you miss class too. Fun class to be in
Love her energy and enthusiasm in teaching. Lectures are long and attendance is recorded using clickers. Homework includes of waymaker self checks and quizzes. We also have lecture quizzes which are graded a couple days later. She drops your two lowest grades for each assignment category. Overall, she's an amazing professor and I'd 100% recommend.
Professor Vogt is good! Very smart but also extremely capable of bridging the learning gap. Took over the second half of my bio330 and saved my grade.
Professor Vogt is very enthusiastic about her work and always makes sure you understand the information. Homework is a mixture of Haymaker study plans and quizzes, which lecture quizzes every other week. Participation points are recorded through iClickers but if you miss a lecture you can make up the points.
Vogt is a really good teacher and knows exactly what she's talking about. Her lectures did get a little boring at times because of the topics, but she does her best to keep you engaged. While she uses clickers for attendance, she allows a decent amount of missed classes and drops 2 of your quiz and test grades.
Professor Vogt is extremely knowledgable about her course material and you can tell she cares. Honestly one of the best professors I have had here. One assignment due every week with a 14 questions quiz once every two weeks that you get 2 attempts on. Drops 2 lowest grades in all categories and is extremely helpful in aiding learning.
Attendance is required as she utilized iClickers. Her lectures are very dense but very informative and knowledgable about topics. Attendance is required every class but she drops some grades including some of the attendance, quizzes, and Waymaker assignments. She makes her expectations clear from the first day of classes, but she is extremely nice.
Dr. Vogt is the most down to earth professor I had and is very fun to talk or listen to. All tests and homework are online and very easy to cheat off of, but because of that I feel like I learned nothing from the class. A very easy A but I gained nothing from an academic stand point and Bio is my major so I feel like I am behind.
Awesome professor, have an open mind and ready to discuss anything with student
Have to wake up every day and be to class at 8am sharp or you miss quizzes worth a lot of your grade.
Dr. V was the best professor I have ever had. She truly cares about each of her students and wants everyone to succeed. That being said you do need to work hard and show up to class every day because of the content and quizzes but if you put in the time she asks of you it is an extremely doable course. Go to her office hours and ask her questions!
This is my second class with Dr. Vogt and she is so amazing. She makes the difficult material easy to learn. If you fail one of her classes it was definitely YOUR FAULT! The test given for this class was extended response, but it made it easier than answering multiple-choice questions. I highly recommend taking this class before taking the MCAT.
I have taken three courses with Dr. Vogt, and ABIO 410 was the toughest. In order to get an A in this course, you have to study the lecture notes everyday, and there is an iclicker quiz at the beginning of each class. The four exams were tricky, but doable (lowest gets dropped). If you want to go to medical school, definitely take this course.
Great professor, would take Human Physiology again if I could!
Prof. Vogt is absolutely one of the best instructors I've ever had. She's bubbly, interesting and very passionate about what she's teaching. Homework consists of bi-weekly review followed by a quiz, which are very helpful and straightforward to complete. The class itself tends to be disrespectful which I find annoying because she's a great teacher.
Great professor and is very knowledgeable about the content she is teaching. Not too hard of a class. Workload isn't bad. You will need to go to most of the lectures though.
Professor Vogt is kind and has a really good grasp on the material she teaches, she talks fast but explains very well. Attendance is taken with clickers but there are make up assignments if you don't go. Her tests are difficult and very detailed based but if you pay attention during lecture you'll be fine. Online homework and quizzes.
solid bio experience. cares about her students and wants you to pass, just attend class and take notes and do a bare minimum of a bit of studying and its an easy class
Professor Vogt explains the material very well and she will explain things more than once throughout the lecture. Homework assignments are due once or twice every week on Waymaker and participation is kept track with an iclicker.
She knows what she is talking about but one word on the exam could trick your brain into choosing the wrong answer. I found it helpful to skip the class and study the material from her videos. Creating study guides or quizlet was very helpful. She is awful during her office hours and directs you to IBASS.
not as easy as Meyerhofer, but still teaches in a similar format. Tests are a bit hard, she has zero leeway in terms of make-ups or extensions b ut is very open about that. all in all pretty good
Dr. Vogt, in 410, is outstanding. You are graded on easy participation questions, daily quizzes, simple journals, and up to three of three tests and a project (your choice). She makes sure you know what'll be on each test, she goes over content over and over if you're lost, and she cares deeply about every student. She is a little snarky! 10/10.
Easily one of the best professors in the biology department. She's super passionate about everything she teaches and can capture your attention every class. She is super clear about what she expects you to know for exams and gives you plenty of opportunities through quiz makeups and journals to earn points back. Take as many classes w her as u can.
Dr.Vogt is such a nice professor. She is very helpful and one of the best lecturers in the biology department. She makes sure that you understand the material by using checkpoints on iclicker. Definitely would take the course again.
Dr. Elise Vogt was a wonderful professor. She explained everything she taught very very well. The class itself was very easy too. I was so shocked coming from bio 1. You just gotta stay on top of your work and put in a little effort. It's all easy work though, TRUSTTT. Def going to take another class with her in the future.
Great class, there were no exams. There were online quizzes, journals, and homework you needed to complete, but were not too hard. Attendance is taken by answering clicker questions and are extra credit opportunities with IBASS.
Dr. V is great! All of her lectures are available to review and use as study material. Opportunities are available to make up for missed quizzes or lecture attendance. There are short quizzes at the beginning of each class on the previous lecture. She lets you know what to expect on each page of the exam so there's no surprises.
Dr. Vogt is an amazing professor and one of my favorites. Her lectures can NOT be missed or you miss out on so much information. She's a fast talker, so you better be a FAST typer or just record her lectures! Gives multiple examples to make sure that students actually understand the topic. Tells you exactly what's gonna be on the exams beforehand!
Dr.Vogt is the BEST professor I have ever had. She is great at explaining things in a very understandable way and tells you exactly what you need to know for tests. There were quizzes every day based on the previous lecture which weren't hard as long as you attended class and reviewed the slides. I would take this class again if I could.
Dr. Vogt is great, you need to go to class for iclicker points which play a large part of your grade, but she offers make up assignments online if you can't go to class. Quizzes after every lecture and the answers are mostly located in the slides. NO EXAMS!
Super sweet, does her best to keep lectures engaging despite having 100+ kids per class. Communicates clearly, grades leniently, and assignments rarely take more than an hour per week. Overall, great professor.
Dr. Vogt was a fantastic professor. The lectures weren't just reading off slides, and were actually enjoyable to sit through. The work was incredibly light, and easy. No midterm or final, and if by just paying attention in class and following the rubric on the homework it was easiest class all semester.
This class was a bit too easy. To the point I forgot I was in a college course. No exams which led to many students not assessing themselves on the materials and excessive cheating. Unfair system that does not reward effort or understanding of material, but rather if you can complete a to do list.
Professor Vogt is both knowledgeable and caring, and works very hard to manage these giant lecture classes. There was a decent amount of homework in this class, but she would always remind us of the due date and criteria multiple times, and there were no tests (this may change in the future). You'll do fine if you show up and do the homework.
No final or midterm but there are two quizzes due every week based on the material you learned in class. There is also journal entries due every other Sunday. All in all Elise makes class interesting she is very lively and passionate about Biology.
This Professor is very Passionate about Biology, and the grading criteria, extra credits, online quizzes, and homework assignment instructions are clearly mentioned. Lectures can be long but she makes them interesting, Iclickers are used for participation.
Professor Vogt makes the lectures interesting. All the assignments for the year are in the syllabus, so you know what to expect. There are two quizzes every week, but they are relatively easy and short. Uses iClicker for attendance credit. Gives up to 75 points in extra credit. Do ALL the work, get the extra credit and you will succeed.
Dr. Vogt makes her classes fun and makes you feel like you're having a conversation. She gives ample opportunities for easy credit as long as you show up to class and do the VERY easy assignments, This class has a research presentation but is also fairly easy and she helps at every step of the way. 10/10 would take anything with Dr. Vogt!
great prof I love her classes. human pys is like her other courses she does participation, quizzes EVERY class, 3 exams and a project. the exams and project are all worth the same amount of points but she drops the lowest grade of the 4. she tells you exactly what will be on the WRITTEN exam. if you miss participation or quiz she has makeups online
Vogt's Human Phys class was great. Learned a lot and it wasn't too difficult. She explains things really well and I cared about the content. Drops your lowest grade or your project so there's a lot of room to do well. Answers back in a timely manner. A quiz and participation points every class but there are makeups.
ABIO 330- Professor Vogt is very passionate about ecology and evolution and is always available to help her students learn. She makes every lecture enjoyable and is a great lecturer. She provides various avenues for grade improvement, for example, she allows you to do three extra homework assignments to replace one of your exam grades.
Professor Vogt's class is a breeze - engaging lectures, light workload, and a forgiving grading system. Unstuckstudy and ChatGPT were super helpful for acing the quizzes and assignments. Definitely recommend this class if you're looking for an easy A.
This review is for ABIO 330, but that was not a choice above. - A Quiz every class on the previous lecture's content (1 quiz make-up /week) - A Participation form about the content of the current lecture - 3 Midterm exam, non-cumulative (150 pts each) - No Final - 3 extra credit homework (50 per, 150 in total) can be used to replace 1 exam grade
Easy A. However, she is extremely unapproachable and condescending when approached. Rude. Her lectures, quizzes, and homework assignments are riddled with typos. She doesn't know the difference between "desert" and "dessert" or "hackles" and "heckles" (said this one out loud repeatedly). Apparently they hand PhD's out to anybody.
Easy A. You can miss class whenever as long as you do the makeup assignment. No exams just 5 question quizzes after every lecture. She has a few writing assignments that you actually have to put effort into but other than that, her assignments are very easy. Her spirit in class is very vibrant and she really does explain things until you get it.
Genuinely one of the best professors I've had. It is apparent that she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I would love to take another class with her.
Dr. Vogt cares so much about teaching students. She is amazing lecturer to boot. There are lots of opportunities to do well. Take her class!
For 330 with her, a few easy HW assignments that can replace ur lowest test grade, 3 exams total (none during finals week, all in class). attendance quiz every class, 100% worth it to go though because the exams are straight from the slides. Great professor and great class
ABIO 131 was literally the easiest class I've ever taken! She explains complex biological concepts in a way that is so understandable.
Dr. Voght is an amazing professor! Her class parameters change by semester, but she usually requires attendance, has 3-4 exams with the lowest dropped and none during finals week, and 1-5 homework assignments that require a few hours of research and writing. As long as you attend and study, you'll pass, and she makes the class interesting.
Amazing, Prof! There are short quizzes in every class about the previous lecture, so take good notes. The exams are handwritten, but she tells you what to expect beforehand. The homework assignments were a little long, but easy! Go to class because there is a participation assignment every time for attendance. Overall, a very interesting class!
Easy A, just go to class, and do the iclicker. 3 projects, but they are super easy only took me 45 min to do each. quizzes after every class by they are easy and journals are easy. no midterm or final!
