Eliu is really funny and cool. I appreciate his enthusiasm and humor. Just come to class and you should get an easy "B". With a little extra effort, you can get an "A".
Professor Benavides is a bright historian. He keeps you interested in the material. He has great stories about being a Texan and a Chicano! Pretty easy A with good effort.
Very easy fun class. This guy is vry energetic. You must try really hardto fail this class since he provides notes and offers a lot of extra credit. Will always respond any questions but in a very funny way!!!Just dont talk or he will eat you alive!!!!Dont miss class as you might miss some good points!
This dudes hilarious. Man, just come to class and he is not boring. Sort of a cross between Lopez and Mencia. only thing is if your late, he marks you absent...
Benavides is absolutely hilarious but the class itself is super boring. We used the book in class only a couple of times. He provides all the necessary notes. He doesn't go over all the notes but it's still your responsibility to know the material. Tests can be as short as five questions or as long as 50 questions. He is picky on attendance.
Benavides is extremely easy. He goes relatively quickly but his notes are pretty easy to follow. No homework.....and tests can be take home. Take home tests tend to be a lot harder than in class tests. But the in class tests are extremely easy and dont exceed more than 10 questions most of the times
Second time taking him and the class is as easy as it was the first time! No stress in this classs as everything is so smooth! Just go to class and youll be fine as he sometimes pops in a surprise assignment. He deducts point if you are late or absent though. But overall easy class.
awesome teacher. easy class. and hes funny
hey, this guy is prety cool. very funny and makes the class flow. the material is super boring but he keeps yu intersted in history. recommend him if you want an easy A
Too easy of a class but you will learn. He is a christian minister so he interjects a lot of that into his teaching, however he is fair and balanced toward other faiths. He has a consistent joy, which is to be respected and is very articulate. You wont be challenged much if you're a history major.
SUPER EASY A !!!! I WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND TAKING THIS CLASS!!...although attendance is crucial... the class is eezy peezy!
This professor is super easy. Just attend class, take notes and use the notes he gives you and the grade is a gimmie! He "tries" to be a hard ass at the beginning, but his class is super easy.
just finish the class dude. materials boring but prof is funny as hell... cant reely miss class though but esy B
Funny guy!!! Keeps you laughing and though the material is boring, he keeps it interesting. Not necessarily an easy A, but he is helpful enough to where it is impossible to fail. Would definitely take this professor again! Highly recommend.
material is boring as hell, but if you can't take Gudelaunas, take Eliu man. this guys super funny. just took him for summr school and got an easy B with not much effort.
Awesome teacher. If you just listen to him you can easily pass his class with at least a B. He is super funny and entertaining and actually makes the class interesting. I hate history, but it was good taking it with him.
Attend class and use your book to study. Explains everything on test. just pay attention and you will pass.
Dr. B is a awesome funny teacher and loves the history. However, just a warning do not speak while he is speaking that is a no no. Dr. B is good explaining historical events. I enjoyed his class.
Easy B you have to work a little harder for an A but anyone who tries can pass this class. 80% of your grade is based on tests and 5% on a research paper and 10% on your final and 5% on group work which is class particpation. He gives extra credit so thats nice. His tests can be take home or you can have your notes. Good personality
hes super funny, recommend him to anyone plus he gives all kinds of extra credit BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR EVERRR!!
His class is extremely easy, participation points, online quizzes with two attempts(guaranteed A unless your lazy or failed high school), extra credit like you would not believe, and gives the class an option for either open book midterm or final. He also tries to get the class more involved to make it an easier learning environment. Recommend.
Such a great funny guy! Lets you earn a seat for crashing and breaks everything down. Keeps the mood lively and interesting. Clear on what he expects and i found it easy! you really have to try hard not to do well!
Made summer a lot of fun would definitely recommend him , makes you appreciate history while keeping it fun.
The class is simple if you read the book. Open book quizzes, notes for midterm and final. Dr. Benavides has a good sense of humor, which helps the course move along.
READ HIS OWN NOTE, HIS POWER POINTS WERE NOT HELPFUL. LOTS OF COOL VIDEOS THOUGH. SPEAKS SPANISH TO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND HIM. NEEDS TO TEACH MORE AND NOT JUST RELY ON VIDEOS.
Greatest teacher ever. You learn a lot of stuff in his class. Funny as hell. Easy tests, lets you use the book and sometimes your laptop on the tests. Would take him for every class I need. Again, funny as hell. Very relaxed and cool about everything. Assigns group work. Best teacher ever. Last but not least, funny as hell. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR !
Professor Benavides was a very helpful and outgoing teacher. If you have trouble with history, he should be the teacher to go to since he's quite knowledgeable in the subject. He's nice, but I feel bad that not a lot of people laughs at his jokes. I would take his class again because he reviews the content very well.
Eliu is an amazing teacher!! he's super funny and makes class go by fast, he lets you uses your phone and laptop for his in class tests and the midterm and final are super easy!! all you need to do is just go to class and you'll pass he also offers a lot of extra credit overall a really good teacher!!
Never enjoyed history until I took his class. Gives plenty of chances for extra credit ! lots of group work which is enjoyable. Has his own sense of humor which make the class fun. No homework assigned, but you need to read the material to pass. open book midterm , take home final . TAKE HIS COURSE !!
I'm so glad that I had the chance to take Eliu's class. The work was very easy, and everything was practically open book. He was never in a bad mood and always made the everyone laugh. I think he said that he wont be teaching this course again, but if he does, I highly suggest that you take him! do the work and you will pass! lots of extra credit!
Great lecturer and keep you interested in the topic even when its hard to understand or dry. Very knowledgable in the subject and is very helpful with any student needs.
Best professor I have had at COD! Great guy and funny, makes learning fun and gets your interest. Gives extra credit opportunity that makes you read and learn. Learned a lot from Mr. Benavides teaching style. Would recommend to anyone.
Best professor at COD. It's impossible to not get a good grade in this class he helps you out so much, not to mention there's tons of extra credit. Would take him for every subject if it was possible! Haha
Great proffessor, makes history fun and interesting.
Simply an amazing teacher, Very easy material and even if you struggle, he's ready and willing to help.
Eliu is so funny! History is totally boring but he makes it semi-interesting. Kind of hard to fail unless you really try to. I've heard that he is totally different and strict online though so I guess I wouldn't recommend that.
His instructions for certain assignments were very unclear, & I was docked significant points. I asked him about the instructions & he said to read them thoroughly, which I did & still did not understand, because I repetitively kept getting low scores for each assignment. I am a Dean's List student & this was very disappointing.
There goes my 4.0 GPA! Reached out to him numerous times and on several occasions did not receive a response. Takes himself way too seriously for an online history teacher. Learned solely from the book, and you have to study HARD for the quizzes. Would give my all in an assignment and then he would not specify why I would not receive full credit.
Just took this class online... intense but not impossible... I was able to get a good grade but man, that's the last time I ever do online... I was told this dude is much cooler in regular classes...
I'm an A student and I passed with a B-. It was definitely difficult and I usually love history. Quizzes were very tough and he's a no-nonsense teacher when it comes to late assignments/makeups. If you're really willing to give 110% for an online history course though, you can finish the weeks worth of work in a day easily. Wish he would curve!
He's really cool and gives extra credit ! 10/10
Dr. Benavides is a great professor. Had his Winter Intersession class, so it was pretty fast paced and compacted, but still learned a lot. You'll never look at history the same way again! Attendance is mandatory and there are chapter and video assignments, but as long as do the work and participate, you'll pass. Highly recommend.
He is Great teacher. He is also very funny. He takes it very seriously and never accepts late work, so make sure you are always in class. He also rarely warns if we are going to have an assignment and all of his in class work is worth 100 points each. His midterm and final exam were both a take home. This was an easy A.
In Eliu's Latin American history course we use multiple textbooks, and we're writing a research paper. Start brushing up on both Spanish and Portuguese or you will be completely lost with all the terminology. I love it, but if you're not a history or anthropology major, take his US history class instead. It's much easier and more fun! ha :)
Honestly this was such an interesting class. This was also the easiest A I had ever earned. I would take him again. Je is also clear about what he wants in his assignments.
Professor Benavides is great! I've taken two of his classes now and honestly I won't take history with another teacher. Latin American history is a hard class but as long as your willing to put in the work it's easy to get an A in his class. His lectures are funny and very informative. I would recommend him to anyone.
Easy A, he makes sure you don't fail, he helps you as much as he can. and is really funny.
Doesn't give much homework, gives a good amount of extra credit, takes time to make sure you did your work correctly, he's pretty of funny.
He barely lectured us about the subject. We never discussed the subject, we just spent 15 minutes taking roll and then he would tell some Dad jokes and dismiss us. The tests are open book, but they are worded in such a confusing manner that the book is almost irrelevant. The research paper was the worst part of this class. I would not take him
Way too much research. He thinks this is a college level or something. Can't make up any assignment unless you can prove emergency. Does not believe in second chances.
Benavides is hilarious! Took him for both US History and World Civilization. Tests are simple, mostly T/F questions straight out of the book or found easily online. He's pretty lenient with grading his in-class assignments. There is a huge research paper due but he spends the entire semester preparing you for it. Would definitely recommend him!
Great guy with a great class. He is hilarious and his schoolwork is not difficult if you do the readings and pay attention in class. He will work with you if you miss 1-2 days but do not miss more than that you will go down by 1/2 letter grade.
I had Benavides for hist 17/18. There's a reason I took him twice. He knows the struggle and he really try's to work with you you just have to work for him when he asks. Every assignment is straightforward just do exactly what he says and you'll pass. Tests and midterm straight from the book and they're usually online. I'll actually miss him!
It has been a pleasure being in Dr Benavides History 17. I took this class because its a requirement but I have found interest in history after taking this class. Many jokes during his lectures which is fun. There is not much homework, read the textbook and show up and you will pass. Also gives alot of extra credit! Definitely enjoyed this class.
Best professor I have had so far show up to class, do the assignments, he gives many opportunities with extra credit, and made history fun for me for the first time.
Read, do your work on time, and you will not have a problem. If you have any questions, Prof. B is an approachable, knowledgeable, caring person. You will have to write a paper so do what he asks you to do and you will pass with an A.
I'm taking this dude online right now. I don't know what all the fuss is about, I think it's pretty cool. I mean, yeah, it's a pain to do all the reading and work, but his response time is pretty fast compared to all the other online courses I've taken. I literally sit down Sunday nights and do all the week's work. I like it!!
Very knowledgable, and makes class fun. You learn a lot. Makes you work for your grade but offers extra credit. I enjoyed this class.
Benavides is an amazing teacher. He truly cares and you can truly see he is passionate about both his students and the subject he teaches, history. Come to class everyday, do the reading and the assignments and quizzes should be cake. He gives a little bit of extra credit but hes very strict on deadlines. Should be an easily passable class.
Dr. Benavides is so cool! I'm taking his Mexican-American class right now. Very chill, and totally learning a lot. So far, the grading is pretty easy and based on group work. I'm dreading the midterm, but I'm sure I'll be fine. He's super funny and tells it like it is! Man, he really loves his home state of Texas! :'))
Very knowledgeable man, definitely one of the best professors by far. Very caring guy who offers extra credit. So funny and not boring, such a cool guy. Hate missing his class ; dont miss more than twice though or it's 50points off everytime after
Dr. Benavides actually inspires me come to class. No one else is like this guy! Just go to class and he will not let you fail. ¡Mi profe favorito!
Benavides is a cool Professor. Hes funny and can carry on a lecture. But omg!! Hes is ridiculous Id rather do more work in class than do all these crazy long assignments. 1000 words for a final and a 15 page paper on top of that you have to present that paper. Whats the point of the paper then... I mean I guess its easy because he helps you.
This class was easy. Professor B was funny, nice and did not give us a lot of homework. He also gave us a lot of extra credit. He never accepts late work so make sure you there at every class. There was also a lot of group assignments. The midterm and final were both a take home test. Overall, he is a great professor.
I took this as an online, 8-week course. At the beginning, grading seemed fair, except there was a lot of writing and something due every single day of the week. However, by the fifth week this professor starts putting all of your most important assignments into Vericite and if you have a score even 1% over 10% you get a zero. Highly discourage.
Just finishing up his 8-week online course right now. Pretty intense, but I can truly say that I've learned a bunch. I wish he would open up the entire course, but I guess one week at a time makes sense. Not a big fan of his use of VeriCite for weekly essays, but not a big deal unless if you didn't finish high school. :') LOL
By far, one of the toughest online courses I've ever taken. I do like that he grades fast, but way too much material, and writing. I'm still not quite sure how the VeriCite thingy works. He lets you resubmit essays to lower plagiarism score if you submit early. Oh well, at least my paraphrasing improved.. LoL
I mean, discussions are OK but weekly essays instead of multiple choice quizzes is brutal. I also agree with everyone about the VeriCite plagiarism checker. Its hard to paraphrase without using similar language from sources. I had to resubmit one of my essays three times in order to bring my VeriCite score below 10%. Too intense for me man!
The only other online class tougher than this class was my social stats class. I wasn't expecting this amount of writing and essay submissions. Weekly minimum wordcount for all assignments is literally 1000 words. I'm not a history major, so maybe that's why I didn't enjoy it as much. I learned alot.. just glad it's over!!
Ok, just completed his 8-week online course. It has waaaayyy too much writing (my two typing fingers still hurt). The use of VeriCite didn't bother me, since I averaged a 7% on most of my submissions, so that was fine. I've had Dr. Benavides in person before and he's great, but I don't think I'll take him online again.
Benavides was one of my favorite professors. He's very perscriptive about what you need to do and will not tolerate it if you don't follow instructions.
Benavides is a great history teacher. It is clear that he loves what he does and he cares about the well being of his students. Do all the assignments and you are guaranteed to pass. It can get boring sometimes but for the most part it was pretty enjoyable. Also, great adviser when it comes to picking classes and helping you plan your future.
I'm not a history major so the material was very boring for me. But, Dr. B is so funny, and was able to keep me awake. He also loves to advise on your schedule of classes. SERIOUSLY!! Make some time and go see him in his office, and I guarantee he'll save you a year's worth of coursework. See him before you go see any of the counselors.
The Hist 18 U.S. History class I took with him was an accelerated course. So there was a lot of reading and writing. The course isn't hard, you just need to put the effort in. If it was a normal class I don't think the work would be overwhelming. So do the work and you will come out with a good grade. BTW, I got an "A" in his class.
Easy classwork and homework. Professor Benavides is a laid back, funny and can be serious at times. Overall a great professor, I would take another class of his.
Well he is not very good for the morale. If you do not do exactly as he says, you will receive an automatic "0" even if you put hard work into it. So I give him an automatic "0" in teaching skills, interpersonal communication, foggy use of materials, foggy instructions, foggy pp slides that have names but no information. He gets an automatic "0" .
This guy is something else! I'm in his Mexican American culture class, and I'm learning alot. I had no idea the subject would be this much fun. It also helps Dr. B is a straight up Tejano who tells it like it is. Such a cool dude. Yes, there's a bunch of reading, but I think that's supposed to happen in college. Right? :')
Be careful when submitting your assignment and ask any questions before hand. Will give an automatic 0 over one unclear detail that is not even on the syllabus. Won't take any consideration for your work if its not how he wants it done. Don't understand how he can be so picky when he doesn't even follow through with his own schedule.
All in all it was an easy class. I would take it again. If you are a history major I would not recommend as you don't really learn much, however if you are just fulfilling your history requirements then go ahead and take him. Easy A as long as you follow the instructions. Homework is easy. If you are looking for an easy class to take this is it.
Dr. B is my favorite professor at COD. He makes you laugh, but is also clearly passionate about history. He really gets invested in your wellbeing and will always stop to talk to you if you see him outside class. I've heard he can be a tough grader, but it seems like that's only if you don't follow instructions. Even he says don't take him online.
Professor Eliu is very funny, but sadly I did not learn as much as I would have wanted for a history class. You kind of have to learn a lot on your own if you want to learn in this class. If you want to get some credits quick, take his class. If you want to learn history, do not take him.
Dr. B is sooo funny! I totally appreciate that he gets that this is community college and not the ivy league. It's not a gimme, but his course is perfect to pair up with chem or any math. I actually liked the primary source stuff, not difficult but I actually learned some new things.
Assignments are easy just follow directions as he explains. I am glad his exams were not so stressful! Textbook is needed. Overall good lectures and good professor.
This was an easy class. Eliu was nice and gave a lot of extra credit. Attendance is important as he never accepts late work. The midterm and final were take home. I found the homework easy and not overwhelming. This class consisted of a lot of in class group assignments and videos.
Daily assignments, a bunch of writing. It kinda shocked me that this was him online. Anyway, much better in person, he's hilarious. For those that say he's easy, or you won't learn much, I would agree that is true in his U.S. history class. But take his Latin America or World Civ. class. There were 20 out of 50 of us left after three months. Easy?
I'm getting ready to transfer to CAL, and Dr. B helped me so much with primary source analysis. While he is more accommodating in his face to face classes, I learned more in his online class. He uses the same format in his face to face, but for some reason, it was more intense online.
If you like History don't take him!!! He doesn't actually teach a thing, most of The time he just goofs around. He seems like he knows stuff but what he says has no substance. Take him if you want an easy A and don't care about learning. Warned you.
OKAY EVERYONE LISTEN UP: I too read these comments and decided to take my chance at trying this professor out. Let me tell you, he is strict in a sense that he is obsessed with homework, word cnt, is NOT wiling to work with you. Considering there is a pandemic (2020), one would think teachers would be a bit more lenient but this is not the case.
I took Benavides for 3 classes, HIST17, HIST18, and SOC15. He is a really great teacher and I enjoyed his classes a lot. The classes I took with him that were via zoom or in-person were easier to pass. The only time I struggled was in the HIST18 course which was completely online because there was more work to complete. But he is a great teacher!
DO NOT take this Professor. He offers Zoom workgroups to discuss the APA ish paper he assigns. He flaked out twice, once on a Sunday. I submitted my paper & he said to correct the references page, I did and he gave me a zero. (I received an A in two other classes that required APA & MLA papers) He constantly talks @ his grad school days.
Great class! Professor Benavides is very supportive and clear about class expectations. Lots of reading, but assignments are available for you to complete on time even with a crazy busy schedule.
Does require reading, states in the syllabus how much time is expected to spend on coursework. Dr. B is upfront about what he expects. But he is accessible when you need him. He posts assignments in advance so you have time to complete and ask questions. His quizzes aren't time so it allows flexibility. I learned a lot and enjoyed this class.
Dr. Benavides is a great professor, I definitely recommend his class if you like a good challenge.
He's very organized and has set dates of the week for each assignment, he is strict when it comes to formatting but if you get it in early enough he grades fast and gives you the chance to fix any mistakes. My only big critique is he takes the average of both attempts on tests.
Absolute worst professor I've ever experienced. I have two Associate's Degrees and a Bachelor's Degree from other colleges and this Professor makes me never want to do school again. Absolutely ridiculous in his approach to grading. Gives no true teaching feedback. Rude and gives a "holier than thou" attitude. Avoid at all costs if you value grade.
As part of General Education, History is a must. So, I was anxious about taking this class. However, Dr. Benavides changed the whole picture. I really enjoy taking his class. Everything is well explained and organized. So, no excuses folks. He established a good way to communicate and makes sure we do not miss any assignment. :)
He is a great guy and teacher. He is very funny. He was a little unprepared to teach our class, but it went well. We would read before class, and then discuss the readings over zoom. It was easy to piggy back off what he or others were saying. Our final was a presentation, but it was very easy and not a lot of pressure. Would recommend!
I took him for an asynchronous class. I already have trouble understanding history as a whole, but the class was very interesting. The discussions were really easy to complete! He doesn't leave his students in the dark like many other asynchronous professors. I really recommend him!
Good class to take online. The workload was manageable and not to heavy. You will get out of the class what you put into it. The midterm and final are cumulative and are very similar questions to the quizzes.
I took this class in person. Total of 12 assignments with a midterm and final. The assignments were given once a week. Basically read a primary source and answer 3 questions. The midterm and final were taken online and at home. Based on his lectures and powerpoints. Made history enjoyable and engaging. Definitely recommend taking.
I just took this in winter semester. I loved it but I found it difficult due to my work schedule and family. So, it was hard for me to read the 2 chapters a day to be able to do the discussion and exam within a few days. But if you are taking this class in the spring, fall or even summer semester, you should do fine as long as you manage your time.
I took the 8 week class and there was 2 chapters to read each week. Week schedule looked like this: M-ice breakers, T-discussion(100wrds), TH- short research assignment, & F-Quiz. There's a midterm & final(both multiple choice). "Pop culture" DC question on each quiz (yes like the comic DC). Overall, good amount of work but it is not hard.
Dr. Benavides cares for his students. His instruction is very clear with guidance, and is always available to answer your questions. The tests are straight from the text. You will be reading a lot! So prepare.
Fair and communicative, made history interesting.
Professor cheers the room up in the morning with his humor. Attendance is required because he gives work to use later on. It's not a difficult class, just show up and do the work. I would recommend
I took this for summer and online. No actual lectures, just reading excerpts and the textbook. There are about 3 writing assignments and an exam each week. The class was not hard but not easy either. Teacher had you put citations on every single assignment. Kind of a tough grader, easily takes points away for little mistakes.
Dr. Benavides' HIST018 class has mixed reviews. While some find it well-organized with clear guidance, others struggle with the heavy workload. Unstuck ai can be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook readings.
He responds quickly when asked questions if you need clarification. So if you're confused you can just email him. Discussion posts can be resubmitted for full, tests only twice w/ averaged score. Also, in anything with info from the textbook, you need to have the textbooks authors, title, and p.# if quoted cited.
He's a good teacher, gives feedback on almost all your work, gives you plenty of chances to fix your work, seems like he actually wants you to succeed
Sets clear guidelines, well organized, grades work promptly, responds to emails in a timely manner. Great professor!
Easy course as long as you do the work by the time it is due. Definitely do the work in the order it is given so future assignments make sense!
I love this prof, he makes history super interesting and is almost always available 10/10 would take one of his classes again
