Good teacher pretty bland, Makes lame jokes but cares about his students! Use the textbook rarely. tests are the same as the reviews.
great teacher, do ur hw online, very helpful, rarely used book, no extra credit, but plenty of opportunities to collect points in class, reviews are somewhat similiar to test, easy going, jokes alot, funny, I could care less about math, but he made the class interesting to me. Over all, he's a great teacher.
He is such a good teacher. I will take him again for a different course. His reviews are helpful. He makes class interesting. He is funny. I only used my textbook to make up for the days I missed taking his notes. Definitely the best!
He's a great teacher. He gives the english definition of mathamatic explainations (instead of the confusing book def). Cracks silly jokes. Lots of opportunity for extra credit in class by working problems on board. Take good notes in class..it helps a lot on tests/reviews.
He is a very easy teacher. You need to show up to class for the notes, but he is very good at explaining things. He let us retake 1 test, replaced lowest test grade with final exam grade, dropped homework assignments and offers extra credit. You'd be stupid not to take him!
Fabulous instructor- makes Algebra fun, explains everything in terms you can understand. Notes come from the textbook, but his notes are explained much better than text, and it's not required to bring to class. Extra credit is offered, and he cares about his students- would definitely take again if I need another math.
great teacher, explains everything and makes sure you understand. test are pretty easy,no extra credit, gives reviews before test and replaces your lowest grade with the final exam grade if you need it. you should deff. take him!!
PROFF G IS AWESOME! VERY CHILL AND LAYED BACK BUT NOT AN EASY A. YOU MUST SHOW UP TO CLASS AND TRY HARD TO PASS. CLASS MOVES KINDA FAST SO IF UR NOT GOOD AT MATH I WOULD TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
He definitely cares about his students and will help you with whatever questions you have. He is very smart but sometimes cannot relate advanced concepts down to student level (Calculus). Overall a very good teacher, but you will have to work to do well in his class!
I really didnt like this class because i suck at math. If math isnt your besy subject i wouldnt suggest this professor
He is a nice man but was a little too focused on the young girls in the front row. Algebra is a hard subject but he did his best and was able to scrape a B out of his class. It did suck after I worked to earn lots of extra credit that he limited it on the last day. I would recommend his class and if you are a pretty young student even more so.
Not impressed with this proffesor. Test are hard!! He gives a bunch of extra credit assignments throughout the semester and then the last day of class decides to tell you only 10 pts of it count. A lot of extra work for nothing. Only take him if you're a genius in math.
Mr. Gutierrez was my favorite teacher for the summer and fall math classes that I took. He is very kind and a wonderful teacher. He makes funny jokes in class and offers extra credit. I would love to take him again, though he isn't teaching trig in the spring. I highly recommend him.
he's alright-i'd give him a B.. i dropped the class i'll have to take it again :( he's definitely better than other algebra teachers i've had (carl adams!) his teaching style doesnt work well with me. i found the online math homework tutorials to be more beneficial than his lectures, but that could just be me...i really struggle with this class.
Class is hard. People were failing tests and a girl even cried. Tests are difficult and he couldnt even answer his own problems. He has to go home and figure it out. But he did let us correct some tests for additional points but still did not help.
Very caring and helpful professor. He will always help you if you have questions. He provides extra credit. The material is tough but between him and the tutoring lab and extra credit, you can do it. Highly recommend this teacher.
I took this class this summer. He is very fast paced but does not mind stopping and explaining twice if you were to busy taking notes to hear what was done. He is very good humored and gives plenty of extra credit to bring your grade up. I would take him again if I had to take another math class.
I recommend this professor to anyone who has trouble with math. He is very good at explaining things and always tries to help the students. I am terrible at math, but I was able to understand algebra with him as a teacher. He is a nice person too.
Silly guy, great teacher, and does an astounding job. I'm just sad that he only teaches Mon, Wed, and Fri so I won't be able to take him for my math course next semester :(
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!! i picked him because his reviews on this website were great but that wasnt the case when i got to class. He rushes through his lectures, he honsetly DOES NOT care about his students. i tried as hard as i could to pass his class, but he never atleast even tried to help me.
I took him in the summer and I really liked his teaching style. He compares math to everyday life, and explains how to do a problem in more than one way. He does teach things fast, but not too fast. My only complaint is that he used MyMathLab, other than that, he is the best math teacher I've had.
Took for trig in sum1, he just goes over the examples outlined in the book. This class was a LOT of self teaching. I don't think it would of been the bad in a regular semester. That being said, he brings nerdy humor into an 8oclock summer math class which was much needed. Pretty cool guy.
Great teacher. Good sense of humor & makes jokes to ease tension. Fast teaching, but willing to stop & explain. Doesn't assume everyone knows math rules (some of us, it's been awhile!) and is willing to help when needed. Will take him again if I can for future classes!
I took 0302,0304&0350 in a pilot program Spring 2012. I am not a MATH person; but Prof. Gutierrez made math interesting and he absolutely will take the time to explain in detail the steps req'd to get to an answer. I did spend alot of time in the MATH LAB but that's what its there for...
NOT A GOOD PROFESSOR. Had heard he was good before but as soon as he became head of the dept had an attitude change. Poor test reviews, and gets up when asked questions. Hurries out of class and made it clear that if we had issue with teachings had to come to him since he is the head of dept. Makes it harder than it has to be. Do not take his class
I would only recommend this Professor if you are my worst enemy, or if you've already taken the class and t feel like punishing yourself. Proofs theorems entire class, and states that you will not be tested on them. Then why spend the whole semester learning them? It seems as though he just wants to show everyone how smart he is.
He was very nice and funny. Test were hard. All homework is online and can do it over and over until you get the grade you want.
Wouldn't take him again. Didn't have hard time with material. Only his grading. Miss 1-2 questions on test and get a B because 15 ? test isn't graded out of 100. It's graded out of 75 points. Homework's approx 30 ?'s but he only grades 5 of those. Miss one, you get 15/20 you get a C. Grading not indicative of comprehension... at all!
Overall a good teacher, but gets confused during lectures (will mix up numbers and such). Will go over HW assignments and answer any questions. Examples he gives aren't too helpful for the homework, but will get you through it. Do the homework for practice! Tests usually 15-20 Q's - not too hard if you followed along in class and did the HW.
His examples in class are ok and offers the beginning insight, but the material he tests at times is much more difficult. Basically you are responsible to learn more in depth, which is somewhat common in many math/science classes. All that being said, if you catch him in his office, he is very friendly and very good at one on one teaching.
Took for summer.. nice teacher but speeds through everything, maybe because it was a summer course. However if you let him know you are having trouble he will go all out to help you!
He is a very good teacher, if you have trouble with math I would highly reccomend taking his class! I have alot of trouble with math, but he is very helpful, he will go out of your way to make sure you understand the material. Given he does go through the examples very quickly but as long as you pay attention you will be fine!
His tests are hard. You have officially been warned.
Great guy! Very funny ! I honestly just would not recommend him for math, he speeds through all the material, he is very fast pace, his teaching styles where alot diferent and He only gave us some examples of HW. I will not be taking him ever again.
He does not write his own test and usually has someone else grade the homework. The test are really hard.
I absolutely hate his style of grading homework. He'll assign 20 questions or more but will randomly pick five to grade. His excuse is he's too busy to grade every students paper when he FREAKING has a student graderassistant. And it isn't even mention in the syllabus!
He's a funny person, he tells jokes in lass to recapture the class attention or to lighten the mood. However I wouldn't say he's a good professor, just a good person. He's a bit old school. Also he tends to speed through the lecture if no one asks any questions. So if you are confused, ask for help! He's sometimes helpful, it depends.
Not a good MATH professor, speeds through everything, very tough grader. The most important thing about how i feelabout his class was that he never really made us feel ccomfortable enou gh to ask questions, he was always saying you should have learned this, or 6th graders know this, just always putting his class down. I will not take his class
Horrible grading policy for HW. Assigns 20-30 problems per section yet only selects 4-5 randomly to grade. Then doesnt grade HW promptly so you get no feedback until after receiving the graded test. Gives HW from printouts of some other textbook that isnt even assigned. Tough grader and tests you over wording of specific theorems and definitions.
He is such a nice man, and he wishes you be successful. However, he won't just let you pass the class easily. You must work hard for it. Doing the homework will only help you do better. He talks quickly, so you must pay attention! He is also pretty scatterbrained, so if he writes an incorrect number on the board just tell him, he's cool.
He's a great professor who really cares about his students and loves math. He encourages class participation and is always willing to answer questions. Lectures are clear and to the point. He also likes to provide examples related to the fields of interest of his students. Like all math classes, do your homework, study hard, and ask questions.
This teacher. Is awesome. Ive never been that great in math but he explains it really well. I am able to understand and follow along during the lectures. He makes it so i understand it and im passing math for the first time in a long time. I would recommend this professor and im definitely taking college algebra with him in the fall.
Horrible! I hate this class with a passion. Mr. Gutierrez, is very tough in many ways. He gives 20-30 problems of homework but only grades 5 out of all the questions. His lectures are not helpful and his test are completely different from the homework and books. He will help you if you ask, but still does not make sense most of the time.
Gutierrez has a goofy personality if you listen hard enough. He made this class enjoyable and one I looked forward to. It really helps to sit in the front and participate in the lesson because it'll earn you brownie points as well as help you pay attention better. Keep up with homework. Tests were easy if you did them and went to class every day.
You have to teach yourself in this class bcz homework is different from your notes. Doesn't give you review for exams... you have to study review problems at the end of every chapter before exams. All tests are taken at the testing center except for the final so you have unlimited time to finish your test. Each test is about 10-15 questions long.
He's a good professor, just show up to class, takes notes, and do your homework. He drops a lot of grades at the end and he tells you exactly what you need to know to pass. Easy class and I had dropped math before and this time with him I passed, so if i can do it than so can you.
He is amazing. he was explaining every detail and i really understand math with him.
He is the most amazing professor ever, and really shows concern for his students. I learned a lot and really enjoyed the class.
This guy complicates everything. 3+2 is now the hardest math problem you will ever do. In his eyes you can't just tell him 5.
Calc1 for Summer. Lectures fine. He needs 10 Dailies so you're quizzed from the lessons or it can become one of the optional homework he assigns if he can't make a quiz. 4 tests + final are not so long and not too hard. In fact, doing homework practice from the book helps. Text is not required but recommended. Better calc teacher than others.
Dr. Gutierrez is fantastic. I struggled through most of this class, but he definitely made himself available during office hours and took an interest in every student. I ended up with an A in a class I thought I would fail because of him. Grade is made up of online hw and four tests; the final is counted twice and subs 1 exam grade if it is higher.
Although Gutierrez is a nice guy, I did not enjoy his algebra class and ended up having to drop. There is too much material to cover (not his fault) which resulted in him going WAY too fast. He also has an accent which made it difficult to understand what he was saying (again, not his fault), making the pace he was teaching at even more difficult.
I have always really enjoyed math and found it really easy to do but since I have been in his class I found myself starting to hate math and struggling with the material. His teaching can be fast paced at times so if that's the type of teaching you like then this is the course for but I would not recommend it.
He teaches you "how to go to the river, how to catch a fish and solve your needs" unlike every other math teachers i have had, he doesn't just pass you, you weaponizes you for the future mathematical wars. If you want a future with math, take him.
One of the best professors I've taken at TCC, yet also one of the most challenging. I'm personally not confident with my math skills, but professor Gutierrez's teaching style is unique, relaxed, and fast paced which kept my attention. The learning curve in his class is huge, but once the material clicks you'll find yourself genuinely enjoying math.
His accent is a little hard to understand at first, but he's so patient and caring that it doesn't really matter. He uses funny analogies and explains things deeply and clearly to help you understand. He's always open for questions! He DOES give a lot of homework, but with his accessibility, it balances out!
He is a nice guy and does care but I found his class to be extremely difficult and had to drop. The tests do not reflect the homework at all and he does not give out test reviews. There is no extra credit. He's a very tough grader.
He seems nice, but he is a tough grader. Test problems are not even close to look like homework problems. you don't get credits if you don't follow his format either on the homework or tests. He only does a few examples in class and leaves everything to you. It's your job to find help from other people.
Mr. Gutierrez, is a really nice guy and funny at times. As previous raters have said, he does go extremely fast over content. Test grading is quite difficult to pin down and overall his tests are quite difficult/different from the homework assigned. Would not recommend to anyone even if he has the best time slot you can find, simply not worth it.
He is a really nice guy and cares about his students, but is extremely tough on his homework and tests. He is somewhat disorganized. Most professors have their homework assignments posted and ready weeks in advance, but he assign homework as we go through lectures, and sometimes late. Overall, wouldn't recommend unless you're born gifted at math.
If you are a genius at math, then take him. His tests are very hard not even look like the homework problems. Good luck!
He's a nice guy, but grades harshly on tests and homework. Make sure you know how to do problems perfectly for the test because he can be stingy with partial credit. He usually assigns 5-15 homework problems from book during lecture (or later posts it on blackboard). He can be somewhat disorganized but will be happy to help students. Final is hard.
He is a tough grader! and if you are looking for an easy pass, look elsewhere. but, overall he is a good teacher who is confused about what level he is teaching; undergraduate or graduate. but you would understand your math better with him.
You need to be good in Math before taking this instructor otherwise youre dead. Literally. But make no mistake the lad knows his stuff. He is good and makes you think Math and ONLY Math. He teaches in a way of making you forget the usual habit of using a calculator. Then you become a mathematician. Literally.
He confuses a lot of people. He teaches undergraduates but acts like he teaches graduates. He writes lots of notes in class and writes really fast . He's willing to help. He does everything with no calculator his tests aren't multiple choice and they aren't like what he taught. You must have some good focus in order to pass.
Dr. Gutierrez was fun a lot and was able to help me understand a lot of my math flaws from highs school and fix them so I could be good. I really liked how he explained me complex numbers. He also know spanish so that was a real help for my given situation.
not a good teacher
He is an amazing professor he provides you with the notes and examples in class that guide you to understand the concept but you do need to understand the content. He teaches really well. His exams are hard but they do-able as long as you study. If you don't understand something go to him. He helps a lot also there are SI sessions that help alot.
He is a great prof and brilliant in math but his thought process is well above most of the students. Sitting in class feels like you are in math philosophy. He lectures the whole class but his notes are great & you can take them home (he writes them down every day just on blank paper). He is well open to questions and loves participation.
He is definitely willing to help you if you help yourself. I couldn't follow his lectures easily. When I compared his class to other algebra classes, he jumps around the textbook in orders that seemed to make it more difficult for me. His test's were incredibly tough. I think all but 5 or 6 dropped from my class, including me. UwilneedLOTSofhwtime.
Gutierrez is a great prof. He def. knows what he's talking about, but doesn't seem to care for others. Notes are fast and a little unorganized. You gotta study a lot in order to really pass. Also seems irritated when you ask questions about the material. He's nice but hard.
I took this class in the summer, and it was cool! The lowest grade I had received was 78. This teacher understands the material is hard, so he is ready to answer your questions. He can also be hilarious sometimes. The important thing is - do your homework, and you will pass the test.
This was the first math class I have ever scored a C in. Professor G. is a very tough grader and has no mercy for exams. His philosophy is that this is how professors will treat you in 4-year colleges so you might as well get used to it now. No notes are used on exams, only a scientific calc and the FINAL IS COMPREHENSIVE. Unless u are gifted GL
He is a tough grader he didnt not show any mercy even though we are going through a pandemic. If you take his class make sure you ask what you got wrong on your test he literally kept messing up my test scores! Every time I ask what I missed on my test something was not graded correctly.
Professor Gutierrez is brilliant, too brilliant if I might add. He is a good example of no matter how smart you are, that doesn't translate to teaching. He will do proofs in his class just "show off". His lectures are fast! Do not take him for Calculus if you struggled in Algebra.
I liked how there was room for error since we were online. Everyone had their own issues on top of learning, so finding time to finish the assignments wasnt hard for this class! Tests are pretty much like the hw!
I think Mr. Gutierrez is an amazing teacher, dude's an absolute genius in math and I found it really interesting. Although he's an amazing teacher, he moves hella fast. His tests are pretty hard, you've learned all the stuff on them but It's all the nitty gritty stuff. Dudes chill and funny but the most important thing is to be there and take notes
He grades incredibly hard, and in some cases completely incorrectly. Had 3 entire answers on a test incorrectly marked wrong due to a conflict between the answers he wanted to see vs. the question he actually wrote. As someone who is getting back into school for the first time in 15 years, this class was a nightmare.
By far the worse professor I have had so far, 85% of the class grade is exam! He posts nothing online other than irrelevant hour long YouTube videos. Everything is lecture driven, hard to access, does not respond to email, gives no feedback, and if you do not understand something, he will blame it on you. Waste of my time and money, do not take!
I really like him as a person but not as a teacher. His homework is all online. If you need to be absent on a test day, dont think you can take it at a later time because missing test day for any reason will give you a 0. He is very difficult to learn from and his online video lectures are pretty useless as well. Definitely would not recommend
Professor Gutierrez is very nice and funny, but is an extremely hard grader. He doesnt really give good notes, theyre mostly all over the place so I ended up trying to have to teach myself on My Mathlab, which is where the homework is given. The tests were usually things we didnt talk much about in class and the mathlab homework didnt cover
Is super kind, but really cannot teach. Lectures are boring and not very helpful; I had to go and teach myself the material. Most of the time it seemed like he didn't even know what he was teaching. Instructions are very messy and not helpful.
He is a nice professor but in the test there are few questions from your notes and text books. So, you can not only do a homework. You should read the book to understand (how to prove it), otherwise you will get a C or drop a class and he Changes his mind a lot and Forgets Quickly, when he talk about a test. So be very careful what he says
Good jokes but cannot teach for the life of him. As I am not taking this class again with another prof. I see how hard he made the class for no reason. If you zone out for one second, you're done for. Highly recommend taking someone else.
Personally loved his personality but his lectures get long and if u look away for one second u feel like u miss a years worth of notes. Very helpful outside of class, tests are very difficult
He's a great professor, but he never curves, and doesn't put homework grades in canvas until the final date at the end of the semester.
This professor did a poor job covering material needed on tests, and his irregular handling of homework made it hard to fit within my schedule. I do not recommend him to anyone trying to find a simple mathematics course to take, you will strongly regret it.
He is really good at using a lot of examples and doing many problems with the class until you get the concept. Sadly I won't be taking any more math courses, but if I have to I will be picking him as my professor.
Have to take test on your own time not class time a lot of memorization of equations and gave a lot of at home work to do.
Gave a lot of homework. Had to learn from my math lab more than the teacher. A lot of memorization
Mr Gutierrez's class is really fun. The only thing I would say is that he is a fast teacher. You have to make sure that you are paying attention or else you could get lost real quick.
Friendly and quite funny but regardless work is difficult. All exams are on your own time and only 10 questions. Must show work and get the answer right for full credit. Lecture nothing like homework. A lot of memorization. Plus the homework isn't applied to your grade until the end of the semester. Do NOT recommend for math-challenged students.
Only has grades for tests and nothing else. Chooses hard questions and expects the students to memorize all formulas for all chapters even when he doesn't have them memorized. Would not recommend taking.
By far the worst professor I have ever taken. Making simple mistakes in lectures and even on tests. I would recommend finding another professor or wait because his class is definitely not worth the waste of money, time, and mental stress
The examples he teaches in class do not match what is on the exam. He does not teach things well. I ended up taking another professor who was much better, and the other guy was able to teach well. But this guy? Such a bad professor.
Beware of this lecturer, he doesn't care any form of effort. Please do yourself a favor and get another professor.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He has no clue how to teach.
He just reads out of the book. He has no clue how to actually do the math. Run!!!!!
Worst teacher ever. I have no clue how anyone gets anything out of this class. The teacher doesn't even know the material. He just points at things in the book. The problems on the tests are nothing like what he taught. Run. Run as fast as you can to get away from him.
He discriminates against people with disabilities.
He refuses to help his students. His only help is telling you there are videos on you tube you can watch if you need help. A real class act.
The worst teacher I have ever had.
He doesn't care about any of the students. He is just there for a paycheck and it is obvious. He doesn't teach. He shows you the book and tells you to watch YouTube videos to figure it out. He offers 0 assistance to anyone. Self centered.
How are they letting this guy be a teacher? Do it take anything he teaches!!!!! Horrible. Doesn't care about the students at all.
Just go to another campus. Do not take this teacher. Do anything else but his class.
He just doesn't care. Unfortunately, he is the only 1325 teacher at TCC northeast. Just go to another campus if you need this class. He cannot teach at all. Waste of time and money.
This guy has to part of that Houston teacher certification scam. He is in no we qualified to be a teacher.
He purposely assigns homework with problems that are nothing like the test. When he teaches he just put the book on the screen and reads it and refuses to answer questions. Phoning it in.
He purposely assigns homework problems that he know will not help his students because the problems on his test are from topics he did not teach or talk about. Nightmare of a “teacher”. How does he have a job here?
All tests are open-ended if you don't study you're screwed, if you did study you're screwed. He takes attendance at the end of class so if you need to leave early for an emergency? Forget about your attendance being there I wish I could rate him a negative, the assignments he gives are insane and take forever to do PLEASE AVOID THIS PROFESSOR
Only calc prof. I've seen that won't let people use a TI-84 (which is practically a must have for calculus). At the beginning of every test he'll hand out screwy dollar store calculators so good luck keeping track of your work/calculations. As mentioned the tests are all open ended no multiple choice, good luck. Walked out during exam1 & dropped.
I nearly dropped this class after reading the reviews—turns out, they were dramatic. I mean it's a math class. It's lecture-based: miss class your behind is grass. The professor is helpful if you engage. The homework is endless and mildly soul-sucking, but it's all due at the end. Somehow, I'm taking his next class on purpose.
Absolute joke of what a professor should be. He wasn't even supposed to teach the class -- swapped him last minute for some reason? Listening to him talk is like watching paint dry. Nothing he teaches is informative and is easy to get lost during lecture. NEVER PICK THIS GUY AS A PROFESSOR. I've never felt so lost in a class before.
