Not good. On the key she appears easy, but you have to work really hard. I personally tried hard, but still ended up with a C. She is tough on grammer, and her essay topics don't make sense. She is a nice human being, but her teaching needs some work.
I thought that she taught pretty well. Very organized. She was a pretty hard cookie, and will murder your paper. I think about 2 people in my class ever got an A (and that is only 1 A) the whole semester. I was really confused about her topics for papers.
Her class was very hard. It's impossible to get an A. She offers a lot of optional extra credit assignments, but because she grades so hard you have to do them to made aq decent grade in the class.
She is a very good teacher, however she is a really hard grader. Just do all of the extra credit that she gives you and talk to her before you turn a paper in. I barely made an A that way.
Shes nice, but an extremely hard grader. She gets pissed when we ask too many questions in class, and she usually wont answer them and tells you to "check webct." Her intentions are good, but the class is too hard to be worth it.
i have always been told that i was a good writer and this woman pretty much hated everything that i wrote. she always kept us like 5 mins late everyday too. there are so many english teachers... take someone else.
Mrs. V is a nice lady, however, her style of teaching is somewhat lacking. She grades hard and does not give anyone slack. I highly suggest going to MOST of her office hours and going to ALL of the extra credit she offers. It is possible to get an A!
Was EXTREMELY hard on grammer! Loves what she teaches, and will help u out any way she can...do the extra credit, and def. consult her on the papers. Very nice person, but her teaching could use a little work.
if she does not like something on your paper then you are def losing points...no matter what...ver y very hard grader...dont take her.....
I was always told I was a good writer before this class. The harder I worked on an essay the stricter she was in grading it. Frequently she told me that she liked what I wrote and my piece was ready to be turned in. However, after she graded it, she always seemed to like it a lot less. Do not take this class!
A lot of people, like the person below, are really bitter because they want an "A" handed to them on a silver platter. Ms V won't do that, but she's nice enough and knows a lot about multicultural lit. Advice: Go to her office hour before you turn in ANY PAPER. Just showing up has an inflationary effect on your grade.
This teacher is very inconsistent. She often misleads you with her responses to your questions. Her answers are often ambiguous. This class is not worth the effort. Do not take it.
She seemed to like my writing because the lowest grade I made on a paper was an 89. She is definitely ambiguous when you ask her questions, but seems eager to help if you put forth the effort (i never did!) she is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about what she teaches, but making an A was a challenge!
does not care about the student at all.
It was hard; I would take someone else if possible. If not, do the extra credit and meet with her on all of your papers. I made an A and I think it's mainly because she saw that I was working really hard (and she seems to like some students more than others).
lots of reading. if you do your work and turn things in on time, Vasconcelos is a great teacher. when it comes to late work, however, she is not known to be understanding. her class is very interesting... but don't expect a good grade if you're not willing to work hard on papers. She's not easy... but she is fair.
Well, well, well, if it isn't Ms. Vasconcelos. She was an alright teacher. Yeah, she grades hard and class was boring, but personally the class was not very hard itself. She knows I didn't try hard and acted arrogant, but I still got a B in the class. She respects individuality; so just stand out in some way and you'll be ok.
I'm in the middle of this ladies class right now and she is super hard. English is my favorite and she is making it dreadful. Not only does she pick apart everything that you do right or wrong but she is also very unclear. She will tell you what to fix on a rough draft and then you fix it all perfectly and she still is picking it apart . Horrible.
Good teacher, class not as difficult as you might feel, Sometimes she is ambiguous. I worked hard and got an A-.
I did not enjoy this class, but I came out with an A-. Mrs. V is very strict about grammar, and that's what gave me trouble. She picks boring material, in my opinion, and she can be unclear. I would not highly recommend her. If you do take this class, meet with her about EVERY PAPER! Do the extra credit, also.
Ms. V is biased in what she reads, but you will read things you have never read before. I got an A in her class and I enjoyed, but if writing papers scares you then steer clear because she forces you to get creative. Overall I liked the class, it's like AP lit.
Hates questions tells u to check webct. Ridiculous on grammar and editing. A lot of reading, some interesting, some will lull you too sleep. She is very unclear and expects you to remember every word that comes out of her mouth. I dont suggest taking find someone else.
She is the laziest professor i have ever had. Never did i think that my worst teacher would come in college. But i found her with Vasconcelos. I thought teachers were supposed to help their students but she really doesnt care
I was in the ENGL 1102M class as a freshman. It was undoubtedly the hardest class of my life. Her grading was very difficult, and at times inconsistent; I thought I was improving, but the grades didn't always show it. I worked incredibly hard for this class to barely pull out an A, and I had a 770 SAT writing score. Do all extra credit!
This teacher is great! The only grades are 4 papers, the portfolio, and in class writings. The in class writings and the portfolios are guaranteed A's so long as you do them right. Your writing really does improve with this class!
She was the WORST teacher I have had. I worked the hardest in this class, and received the worst grade. I went in for meetings on each paper and she said they were great, yet I never received a good grade. She also is NOT helpful. She will not remind you when papers or hw is due, and will fail you if they are one minute late. DO NOT TAKE HER!
I had this teacher and she was awful. She was so mean and not helpful. My friend who got an A in 1101, had her paper put on the board in this class for how good it was. She then received an F for this paper as the final grade. She was forced and recommened to drop the class by the teacher. She has no problem being harsh and cold towars her students
She was the worst experience of my freshman year. Avoid at all costs.
She was the worst. Do not take her class. She is just so unpleasant and unclear about what to do, when assignments are due, and where to turn them in. I'm so glad the class is over.
I got a 760 on my SAT verbal, and an B+ in ENGL 1101. In Mrs. Vasconcelos' 1102M class, I went to her office hours and turned in 4 drafts of our first paper and got a 50 on it. She said i really deserved a 20, but she was doing me a favor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS EVER. She doesn't care about her students at all.
I'm generally an A English student and enjoy English. I ended up with an A-. She's not horrible, but she is unclear with directions. Also, VERY hard grader. Go to office hours for papers. If you're not a strong English student, don't take her, but if you are, it's not impossible to do well in the class.
NOT A GOOD TEACHER
She is not a good teacher. I will qualify her as the worst teacher. I had to work very hard for an easy class to have A. She is very unclear and unhelpful, she doesn't care about the student. Don't take her, specially online she will fail you.
This is a difficult English class. It takes up as much time as my other classes combined. You will have to read and participate in discussions and turn in multiple drafts of 3 papers you'll do. She's not very clear about directions and what she wants, so you have to make a mistake first before getting it right. Basically take someone whos notso har
SHE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER EVER! DO NOT TAKE HER! SHE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HER STUDENTS AND IS WAY TOO HARD OF A GRADER. TRY TO DROP HER CLASS IF YOU HAVE NO OTHER TIME AVAILABLE MAKE ROOM IN YOUR SCHEDULE TRUST ME IT IS WORTH IT. ENGLISH SHOULD BE AN EASY A OR B IF YOU ATTEND CLASS AND WRITE ON TOPIC NOT A "I HOPE FOR A C"
Mrs. Vasconcelos' English class is not one to go to if you're looking for an easy A. She's a hard grader and you will have to put effort into your work. That being said, hers is my favorite class this semester. It's fun, thought-provoking, and interesting. The material she picks is great, and the discussions are always interesting.
dont remember course number. LOTs of reading for this class! lots. and lots of writting. he is a tough grader, so be prepared to work hard. i ask her to review my outline BEFORE i wrote my papers, and that helped a lot. so ask for help.
Definitely worked harder than I expected too in an English class, but it wasn't impossible. She gives a lot of help if you see her during office hours. It's kind of boring, but discussions are okay. There are probably easier classes out there, but don't freak out too much if you get Mrs. VH. Just be willing to put in the work to ALL your papers.
Hoping she will be the worst professor I will have at UGA. I really did not enjoy her as a professor: she assigns all her work assuming she is the only class the students are taking. Way too much work and very harsh grader. Another thing that stood out was her vagueness. Her comments to papers/journals always needed to be deciphered. Very confusing
She really loves English and, if she see's you have a passion for it too, will love you. There is a lot of work, which does take up a lot of time, but none of it is too difficult. She does not tolerate absences, but she does give extra credit and chances to make up for missed work.
She is the worst professor I have had at UGA. She has outrageous grading standards and gives little to no feedback or justification. The feedback she does give is unclear. I feel like we were expected to have the writing abilities of a third year English major.
huge workload. unclear in directions. extremely tough grader. hates questions, tells u to check writershelp.com. gave me positive feedback on an essay and said i would score high and then gave me a low B. overall, i do not recommend her. way too much work and stress and you will not get an A.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS EVER WITH THIS PROFESSOR. Nothing is every good enough for her.. very hard class. She expects every one to know exactly what she is talking about but is very vague. English 1102M is not supposed to be harder than upper-level English classes but it was. She made writing miserable and is RUDE
I enjoyed her class. She is very helpful and willing to work with her students. Her assignments prepare you for the final portfolio. Her feedback is fantastic. You need a work ethic to do well in the class. You can't expect an a; you have to earn an a. Overall, I throughly enjoyed this class.
I did not enjoy this class whatsoever. I felt uncomfortable every time I went to class and she expects you to pretty much be an English major. I would not recommend her if you are just trying to receive credit to fulfill a degree requirement. She does not care about the success of her students. Hard to understand her comments and interact with.
As long as you put effort into your essays and try to participate in class, she will go easier on you. I loved all the material we had to read in class, and discussion for the material was thought-provoking.
Very unclear with directions. Unclear grading, as sometimes you don't understand why you received a certain grade. Classes are a waste of time. The papers are supposed to be very well developed, but everyday in class we go over some short story or poem that we were assigned to read for homework, and only have a surface-level discussion on it.
I took this prof thinking it wouldn't be that bad based on other reviews. I WAS WRONG. She's a nice lady but she makes 0 sense in class, assignments are very unclear and you will have literally no guidance at all when it comes to writing papers. The prompts don't make any sense and the discussions in class are pointless and basic. Very confusing
I was scared this class would be hard because of the reviews but it was surprisingly easy. I took AP English and Lit so her essays were easy to me. If you aren't that good at English her essay may be hard for you. Class sometimes seemed useless because we went over pieces of writing that related to our theme but couldn't use them in our essays.
She grades essays extremely harsh, but it helps to prepare you for your portfolio, which counts for a huge chunk of your grade. there are bonus opportunities every time you turn in an essay that I didn't know about- seriously, check your syllabus every week to see what you can do. I could ave gotten all A's if i did that, they apply to each essay
She seems nice at first, but if you turn anything in late she will not like you or grade it any time soon. Participate in class and she will love you.
She grades papers extremely hard. Class time is useless and boring, you just discuss whatever text you are reading and if you participate, she loves you. Attendance is mandatory. She seems nice but is very strict on due dates and being prepared for class. Get out while you can and take another English professor if possible.
Don't take this class unless you like hurting yourself. This class is terrible. She is a tough grader. I still do not know why I got points off on my papers. As a result, I have no idea how I could have done better. She only likes certain people in class, and it seemed that grades reflected her feelings towards individuals. Do not take this class
No offense to Liz, she is a very kind knowledgeable person, but her 1102 class is no fun. The in-class material doesn't have much to do with the essays, which are most of your grade. She's also a pretty tough grader and her prompts are not clear at all.
While most of her reviews are pretty bad, Professor VH is not so bad. While her instructions about many assignments are unclear and confusing, if you actually put forth effort on papers and final portfolio you'll do fine. But yes, participate in class! She definitely notices when you actually discuss the material. (even if you didn't read it @me)
STEER CLEAR IF YOU CAN. I read the bad reviews and assumed the class couldn't be as bad as it sounds, but it absolutely is. She's a kind person, but her class is awful. She is incredibly unclear about what she wants and her prompts are difficult. Her in-class lessons do nothing to make you a stronger writer.
She is a nice person and very into her subject but she has no idea how to convey assignment instructions to her students. You get your first paper back that has 30+ points taken off and only two sentences of feedback to make this worse. Do not take her.
Lots of extra credit was offered, softening any bad grades on papers. Solid feedback was given on all papers, and she was accessible in terms of asking questions after class. You have 3-4 weeks per paper, and she keeps track of how you're progressing to check for issues. Overall, I feel that the bad reviews are not representative of the class.
Overall, I really enjoyed her class. She is always accessible online or during office hours. Her in-class discussions also correlate with the essay topics so its easier to formulate in-depth ideas. In regards to the paper, she grades based on your research source. I used the online UGA libraries website and got As on all my papers. Good teacher:)
Her class is a difficult adjustment, especially if you're not used to super tough grading. The majority of your grade is based on 3 papers and the final portfolio. Overall her feedback is helpful, but she is a very tough grader. If you talk to her outside of class to get additional feedback she's very helpful, and also offers lots of extra credit.
She uses a course packet to teach a lot of her course. The readings from it are all of various lengths but don't put them off until the last minute. Readings are also necessary for class participation. Make sure you read as much and as closely as you can. The grade is based on three essays and your portfolio at the end of the semester.
First paper I got a 50 with one line of feedback. Told me my drafts were good and had good ideas. Clearly they weren't. Dropped and took someone else. Didn't make below a 95 with my new professor. Waste of time.
I would only recommend you take her class if you are very confident with your writing. I would go to her office hours and ask for help on my papers and she would be very vague or even tell me my paper was great, but every time I got a C average on my papers. Very frustrating when office hours arent actually helpful. Thankfully extra credit helped
She's a nice and interesting person, but the level of work wasn't warranted for an entry level class. But if you put your head down and grind out the work, you can survive.
Prof VH is very sweet, a little vague with assignment instructions, but nothing too bad. She gives a ton of extra credit and plenty of time for questions. Her class is discussion based and very low pressure. There are 3 papers and a group project that make up the majority of the grades. It's not too bad if you just put in some effort.
She assigns a lot of reading outside of class. She does give many opportunities for extra credit though. You are allowed 5 absences in her class.
Professor VH is awesome! If you go to class, and listen to her recommendations for your writing, theres no reason you shouldnt do great! She holds so many office hours if you need help, and she even makes herself available online if she cant help you in person. She was awesome!
There are mandatory readings for every class, but honestly the discussions are interesting in-class as long as there is participation from students. She gives a lot of extra credit throughout the semester. Sometimes unclear, but as long as you ask questions for clarification (sometimes a lot of questions) she will answer them. Available for help
Extremely vague, very tough grader, lots of assignments. Not warranted of an intro English class AT ALL. Find a different professor than VH, you will be glad you did. Honestly half of the time I had no idea what I had to do. She did not see an assignment that I turned in that was clearly labeled and refused to grade it.
She gives very vague instructions sometimes, but if you ask questions and go to office hours, you will be fine. She has very accessible office hours if you want feedback. There are a lot of readings for a core class and a lot of work, but if you took AP lang or lit, it's nothing new. A good class overall but got really rough after moving online.
Her class involves a lot of writing, and she is a somewhat tough grader. She is very nice as a person though, so it balances out. Instructions can be vague and confusing. There were zoom classes, but not optional or v helpful. Meat of the class was just the essay drafts and the discussion posts
two words: OFFICE HOURS! Professor Vasconcelos is definitely a very tough grader, so the best way to get a good grade is to visit her in office hours and show interest in the class and improvement in your writing; she will be happy to guide you. I was stressed at first because the class structure is a bit confusing, but you get the hang of it.
She's very scattered, uneducated on African American literature but tries to teach it anyway. She's easily accessible and is transparent about her grading, but she's condescending, changes the syllabus constantly, and is hard to get help from when it comes to writing.
If you don't like writing I'd drop and find a new class. Her expectations aren't unreasonable but she's very tough grader. You'll have tons of assignments and only a few will be graded. She's very disorganized and everyone is confused the entire semester.
Do not take her. Nothing is clear and the class never understands what is going on. She gives no guidance on papers but is looking for very specific things and grades very difficulty. In class is very boring and there is no explanation ever on what we need to be doing outside of class. She is short and unhelpful over email .
Attendance is mandatory, but attending class does not help you with the graded essays. Going to class felt like a waste of time. She is very unclear about what she wants and makes the class far more confusing than it needs to be.
After reading Professor Vasconcelos reviews I was very nervous to take her. However, she was a much better teacher than the reviews made her out to be. She is vague, but will answer any questions you have about an assignment. She helps you throughout the drafting process and is not that hard of a grader. She gives extra credit for every paper.
This course was beyond confusing the whole time, as she is unclear with any limited instructions given, and her eLC is unorganized. Short over email and vague during office hours. Grades subjectively according to how SHE prefers the paper to be written. Attendance mandatory but class doesn't help with writing the graded papers. Take anyone else.
This teacher is so easy compared to what I've heard of other English classes. Almost all homework assignment if you even do them are extra credit. If you do not have good background on writing essays than yes you might do badly but if you are good at writing papers than its an easy A+
Although she is very nice, I would not recommend taking her. Her ELC is very unorganized, 90% of what we cover in class doesn't really help us with our essays (3 essays are 50% of our grade), and she's a pretty strict grader. Make sure you go to class and take advantage of extra credit - but take someone else if you can.
This class was a nightmare for me. The ELC is a mess, making it difficult for me to keep track of due dates. Feedback on writing assignments is hard to understand, and even asking her about this doesn't help much. So many random things going on every week with little direction. Save yourself and don't get her for English.
Take someone else if you can. Essays are separate from lectures and don't really help when you start writing. She is very vague and doesn't give straightforward answers when you ask her separately.
Nice professor overall and is willing to help. Tough essay grader though. Her lectures are useless and do not help with the essay. Also you can get by the class without buying the textbook(thats what I did). See if you can get someone else though.
Don't take her! \Her class structure is confusing and it took me a couple of weeks to figure it out. One time I completed the extra credit, which was a lot of writing, she graded it and said it was a day later from when we discussed in class and said I should do it AGAIN and she MIGHT CONSIDER accepting it. Most of the class really disliked her.
Her lectures make no sense and she provides no details at all. The essays have nothing to do with class or lectures and if you ask for help she is very vague. I would not recommend this class at all!
She is the toughest grader ever. Her prompts for the 3 essays that account for %50 of your grader is vague with no direction. Her lectures are mandatory, but completely useless and don't help for your essays. Her eLC is an organizational disaster, and communication with her is nearly impossible. Take literally anyone else.
She teaches this class as if it's a graduate seminar. eLC is a mess and most students in my class remained confused about assignments and due dates through the end of the semester. Very confusing instructions, even if you ask her directly, she is vague and talks around the answer as if we are all grad students. Lecture is a waste but mandatory.
Extremely confusing eLC and class work, which as the rest of the reviews point out, have absolutely nothing to do with the papers. A TON of extra credit opportunities though which is nice. If you take her your going to be more worried on what's actually for a grade or not than the actual work. If you write eloquently you should get >90 on essays
Tough grader and gives very little feedback unless you go to office hours. Lots of assignments that aren't actually grades and can be very confusing about instructions bc she does not explain things well at all.
Look, Professor Vasconcelos is a very nice and passionate person but please do yourself a favor and choose another professor. Her class criteria is very unorganized which leads to the whole class being confused all semester. She is a very tough grader compared to other ENGL professors at UGA and her feedback on each essay is confusing.
She doesn't deserve all the hate. Agreed that her class is structure is confusing and unorganized tho. Honestly, I only did like 2 extra credits and they were easy. She gives so much extra credit opportunities and u will get a good grade if u just keep up with weekly writing. She was nicer than she seemed and wants you to succeed.
Class is more for discussion and isn't completely necessary for the assignments that will be graded but attendance is still mandatory. We only had 2 papers and a group presentation for the whole semester and a portfolio for the final. She offers extra credit for every unit. There is a draft/paper due every friday. She talks a lot during class.
She's my queen fr. I'd be lying if I said she wasn't kinda confusing but I love her any way. She gives ton of extra credit and appreciates anyone who puts in effort. Meet with her outside of class and she'll help you significantly with the papers. She's so sweet.
She is honestly a relatively nice person, but her class structure was confusing, especially in the beginning. Her feedback was confusing and didn't help much with the portfolio at the end of the semester.
Incredibly nice professor! Her instructions can be really confusing at times, and sometimes her feedback on essays may seem pretty vague, but I would definitely recommend asking lots of questions and going to her office hours. She has a clear vision for what she wants to see in your essays, so asking her one-on-one definitely helps! Lots of EC too!
