Not only does she not give out good grades just to spite her students, but she creates an unrealistic amount of work for her students. There is a book to be read, a movie screening to be attended, a discussion, as well as 2 lectures EACH WEEK. For a 100 level class this is beyond too much to be completed each week. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
I wasn't sure what to expect before taking this class but it has been really great! I learned a huge amount, and most of the readings (and all of the films) have been good. A few of the readings are too hard, but the professor explains them clearly in class. The professor doesn't grade, the TAs do, so that other student is wrong!
Some of the readings were really hard to understand so actually going to her lectures was really helpful since she explains everything very clearly. Also, it was a lot of work--a few papers, lecture, discussion section, and a screening about every other couple weeks. and yes-TAs do all the grading basically
great course.
Took her Deans Seminar on 9/11...Extremely nice and cares for her students. Heavy, heavy use and analysis of ALL textbooks, so be prepared to do a lot of reading. Classes were used to discuss the readings, but she tended to run the discussions. Definitely learned a lot, but did a lot of work to get there.
Amazing professor, amazing class. Lots of reading, film screenings, and discussions, but totally worth the time- you gain a totally new understanding of American Studies. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
The class features many short essays, long readings, and movie screenings. Aside from lecture, she is invisible, and if you want help you need to see your TA. The TAs, by the way, do all the grading.
She works at Cornell now. But Contemporary World Literature was the best class I ever took. MOST prepared lecturer ever, and her insights blew my mind. Wrote down every word she said, every day, never missed a class. She's brilliant. And SUPER nice, except for when she's mean. But it's usually in an awesome way.
Anker is great. Really interested in students. Grading is done primarily by TAs, but her lectures help a lot in papers. Very writing intensive (even her non-WID courses).
By far one of the best classes I have taken. Lots of writing and analysis involved, but incredibly fascinating lectures that analyze many different genres of films and their relation to American Political thought. Highly recommend this class and Professor Anker- her lectures are very clarifying and informative.
Took her Politics and Film class in the fall semester and signed up for this class spring semester because she's such a great professor. Reading intensive with moderate amount of writing for a WID, but the overall design of the course flows great. Readings tend to lean towards the left and there could be better balance of opposing ideas.
Professor Anker is a pretty good professor. If you don't read the textbooks (I tried but they are tough reads) she'll outline what you need to know in her lectures. Very helpful on papers. Weekly papers aren't too hard considering you get to watch movies. One large final paper but it's not too hard. Grading by TA.
Professor Anker is a great lecturer and her lectures contain a lot of interesting and important points. The class is very well organized/structured and the workload is manageable (TA's are really helpful too). Seriously one of the best classes ever - you learn about different political theories, and then "apply" the theories by watching movies!
Professor Anker is very knowledgeable and a good lecturer. Film and Politics is a great class, a little abstract for sure but once you grasp it it is awesome. DO the readings and make sure you stick to page limits on assignments.
Fantastic professor! Definitely a lot of reading that you need to keep up with to succeed, but Anker picks very engaging texts and has a way of making class really interesting. She inspired me to change my major-an overall great lady!
She's awesome. I took her class called "Politics and Film" for an American Studies credit and it was my favorite class this semester. Her lectures are very interesting, but you need to be there for the discussion of the books. Tons of reading though, and complicated. I would 10/10 recommend this class.
Professor Anker's Politics and Film class is really interesting, although some of the movies are a little boring. Readings are hard and very dense but she tells you everything you need to know in lecture. Definitely my favorite class this semester.
Professor Anker is AMAZING!!! Take her class if you are interested in politics or culture. Or you just like hearing someone brilliant speak. My favorite class so far at GW. TA will make or break you grade but Anker is so helpful and encouraging if you need help.
One of my favorite and most difficult classes at GW. The readings progressively get tougher and longer but she covers the readings really well in lecture really well and knows the information. I took it for the art credit but anyone who's interested in politics should take it though its not your standard polysci class. TA's were really helpful.
Interesting class. You have lecture in the morning and watch a movie at night. I learned a ton. You have a paper due the next day in discussion and the TAs grade the papers as well as the final paper. There are no tests in this class. You don't have to attend lecture, but it is really helpful. If you really like politics and movies, take this class
Good professor, an expert in her field, and a well-run class.
Anker is amazing. So knowledgable and the readings are interesting and very relevant. TA does the grading so difficulty may depend on them, but it's just a couple of one page papers, then three larger ones that aren't even long. My favorite class and professor so far at GW, take this class.
Anker is such a clear and engaging professor and is so knowledgable about American Studies. Politics and film is a great class where she essentially gives you the necessary info to write your paper, along with the film at night, so the readings aren't really crucial to do. Lots of weekly one page papers that your TA grades and a final paper.
Easily one of best professors at GW
Fantastic lectures. Lots of reading (ranging a lot in difficulty) but she explains things well. Clearly brilliant, answers questions about her lectures well. Short weekly papers graded by TA, and a final paper which isn't too bad. Class is very interesting, I never wanted to skip. I enjoyed her book. Would absolutely take again.
She's very smart and knowledgable but kind of pretentious and definitely leans left (makes you read her own book and spends a class railing on capitalism). Discussion sections can be tough if your TA is tough, because the weekly papers are graded only as A, B, C, or D. Weekly films ranged from great (Dark Knight) to tedious, but defs interesting
Professor Krug is very smart and knowledgable. Her lectures are explanations of the readings she assigns. A lot of readings. There are weekly papers on movies screened in class and one final paper.
By far one of my favorite classes at GWU. You have lecture once a week, attend a movie screening, and then write a one page paper connecting the movie to the readings, which is due in the discussion. However, Professor Anker reviews the material so well you won't have to spend hours trying to understand the readings. Great professor and class.
she literally seems like she reads straight off a piece of paper her entire lecture, shes super smart but is very repetititive. amount of writing is reasonable but grading is done by TAs so even though class is easy its easy to be screwed over by TAs with unrealistically high expectations.
Incredible professor. Her lectures are extremely useful, she's incredibly receptive to new opinions, and she has a good sense of humor. Her assignments are relevant, engaging, and they force you to think critically. I highly recommend this class.
Definitely very eye opening and I left lecture feeling inspired. The only problem is that she attempts to cover a ton of topics in 1 semester so I wished we spent more time on a subject in order to read different arguments regarding it. Overall I would definitely recommend, I took as a WID and the amount of writing was not overwhelming
She's amazing! Lecture isn't mandatory but it helps&is usually interesting&relevant. Assignments force critical engagement with text&ideas and aren't demanding (longest assignment was 6-8pages). Grading depends on TAs but I had 2 of the 3h were great/fair. Unless you can't read/write or never show up no reason this shouldn't be an easy A/A-.
She knows a lot about what she's teaching and was always open to answering any questions. In lecture she covers the reading in-depth, so if you don't understand something or didn't read then that's totally fine because she'll get to it. Grade is mostly dependent on your TA though. Super interesting topic and I really enjoyed the class!
I loved Anker's class, it was one of those rare classes that gave you credit but was also so interesting. I also had an amazing TA (Harry!!) so that was a bonus. The course is basically a lecture once a week, a film at night and one discussion. Grades are based on a paper every week about the movie connecting it to readings and one final paper.
Every week you "read", talk about the reading in lecture, watch a movie, then write a one page (2x spaced) paper connecting the movie/reading. DONT BUY THE BOOKS because she talks about the readings in depth every lecture. Grade depends on your TA. No midterm, final is a 6-8 page paper. Nice, smart lady! I'd recommend this class!
Solid professor. Readings assigned weekly, but lectures are extremely thorough and cover literally everything you need to know just skim the readings for a quote for the weekly papers and actually read the ones you write your final paper on. No attendance at lectures, but there is for screenings. 2 discussion skips allowed. TAs do grading.
Anker is a true gem. She is accommodating and keeps her lectures fresh and engaging. You should probably read the texts or at least skim them for the weekly paper. TA's grade everything and they do take attendance , which makes up 10% of your grade. Politics and Film was an amazing, interesting class and I recommend it to anyone who's interested!
Lectures completely explained the readings and were much easier to understand than the readings. Readings did help with writing the weekly one-page film analysis.
I liked professor Anker, she seems like she's definitely very knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. If ur a polisci major, there's definitely a lot to learn from her. I took this class to fill my art gen ed credit and I think it's a really solid choice for that. Kinda lot of reading but tbh I never did it and I got an A. Interesting class.
Very knowledgeable about the subject matter, great lectures, passionate speaker, really explains how the readings relate to the movie we watch every week. Show up to lectures, keep up with readings, attendance is required for the movie and discussion. There is a weekly one-page paper. Having a really good TA adds to the class.
Lectures are almost entirely summary of readings, so if you go you don't really have to read other than to quote things for papers. Everything is graded by a TA so that's a large factor in your grade.
Anker is a genius and a passionate lecturer. The readings are dense but she explains them very well. A lot of this class depends on your TA who grades everything, I didn't love mine but it was still fine. Weekly 1 page paper connecting the movie to the reading and a final 6-8 page paper on a movie of your choice.
The class was more centered around political theory than actual politics. She tries to bring in extremely complex topics right at the beginning of the semester, which left a lot of people confused. Class placed an unnecessary weight on attendance. Wrote more in this class than my UW.
Second class with Prof. Anker. Still an absolute gem! Lectures are engaging and inspiring. Take advantage of her genius and ask questions to engage further with material. TA does all of the grading, so a great TA to lead discussions and review papers is a huge plus.
Great professor, very accommodating with COVID. The class is entirely writing-based, but it's nothing too difficult. Your grade is completely dependent on your TA. I learned a lot from this class and would recommend it.
If you're thinking about taking Prof Anker and if you love learning/strengthening your writing skills/critical thinking skills, please take this! Professor Anker is so great and I enjoy every single lecture/reading she provides. Please take it!
AMST 1100 was my favorite class last semester! Some of the movies weren't that great but Prof. Anker's analysis was always great. The readings are pretty challenging so it was helpful to be ask questions during class/discussion section. Prof. Anker is so smart and engaging in her lectures and I would 100% recommend the class.
This class is all lectures with a weekly discussion group. The reading can be excessive at times, the papers aren't too bad in terms of quantity but grading criteria is quite confusing. Professor Anker may well be a good professor for another class, but this one is very dull.
It's a WID, so yes, there's some writing but much less than other WIDs, in my experience. Anker's lectures are spot-on with the material, but discussion sections are grueling. Paper prompts are pretty lame and it is hard to get an A. Interesting concepts and readings, but the class was a bit dull.
Professor Anker is one of the best lecturers at GW. The papers are not necessarily easy to get an A on, but your TA can help you if you need it and Prof Anker is more than happy to help.
I loved this class with professor Anker! She is very kind and there to help you if you need it. The instructions of the papers are very straightforward and if you need clarification on the prompts she is more than willing to provide that. You need to participate in your discussion sections but they're so much fun (shoutout to the best TA Ro!).
Literally best professor at GW.
Professor Anker is extremely kind her class American Politics and Film is a great choice for any major. Totally recommend!
She is so sweet and very passionate about the topics. The lectures can get a little long and boring and the assigned readings are not mandatory as long as you take notes in lecture. The work for the class outside of readings seems like a lot but if you stay on schedule its pretty easy. Class material is intresting!
Dr. Anker is one of the best professors I have ever had. I will be taking as many classes given by her as possible. She is incredibly insightful and breaks down incredibly complex material very well. The reading for her class is heavy but have become some of my favorite works that I regularly point back to in other classes.
Prof. Anker is amazing, her lectures are super clear, and she answers every question perfectly. Your grade relies on biweekly papers, and a final paper, both of which are pretty easy. Discussion sections count for participation so make sure you show up. I would take all of Anker's classes if I could, awesome teacher
Professor Anker is very insightful and chill. The class is graded on five one-page analysis of a movie you watched and the assigned readings and one final paper. The professor and the TA's are very accessible. If you are looking for an art credit or want to do American Studies as a major/minor, Politics and Film is an amazing class to take.
A great class to take for your art credit, especially if you're into politics. Watch the movies, follow the essay prompts, and participate in discussion and you'll be fine.
I never went to lecture because Professor Anker would just talk for an hour with no visual aid. But, she's clearly very knowledgeable, and the course is structured very well. So, I really agree with all the other ratings.
Professor Anker is amazing! The class was very well structured and both Professor Anker and the TA's are amazing. The class is very easy to understand and is easy to get an A in. While lectures aren't mandatory, I highly recommend going to the lectures as they help you understand a lot about the readings and help you prepare for your biweekly paper
The class itself is pretty fun and my discussion group was great. Maybe it's because Prof. Anker's actual lectures are in the big lecture halls, but I felt like a lot of her lectures were more about telling us her opinion on things rather than actually presenting information. She was approachable and seemed very kind though
This was such a boring class and since you only have to write a short paper every other week, I only really did work for this class every other week. It's a really easy class if you want to knock out your gpac requirement. 6 one-page papers about the movie and class material and one main paper 6-8 pages on a movie of your choosing
Professor Anker is very passionate about various political topics and allows for students to voice their opinions. You have a paper due every other week, but the prompts and films are very easy to follow. This class is something I think everyone should experience.
Lectures are extremely boring, she is a great professor though. Not very difficult to do good in this class. I would not take her again just for the fact that her lectures are so boring. It's hard to not fall asleep. I went once towards the end and you could tell many people thought just like me being that the auditorium was half empty.
This course and Professor Anker were both amazing! Lectures aren't mandatory but movie screenings are. The movies are really interesting and fun though so it wasn't annoying to have to go every week. The class is graded just on biweekly one page papers, discussion participation, and a final paper. Highly recommend!
The class had it's interesting and boring moments. Lots of reading, but I didn't do most of it. I liked the bi-weekly papers because it basically gives you every other week off. The discussions were often very interesting and lead to good discussions.
a lot of the reading assigned isn't necessary to get a good grade in the class so long as you show up to the weekly lecture. prof. anker is more than happy to answer any questions & does a good job explaining course concepts concisely. additionally, she lets you drop your lowest score or skip a week altogether. overall a super interesting class!
Prof Anker is great, her lectures are really straightforward and the discussion sections are pretty easy. Biweekly essays are kind of a pain, but doable in under an hour if you attend the film screenings. Readings can be a little boring but they relate to the course content well. Would recommend if you're looking to view some interesting movies
The movies were mostly fun but some were really boring. Most of the reading were rehashed in the lecture so I did not even open most of the books she assigned.
I believe Professor Anker is the best lecturer and professor at GW. Her course structure is very conducive to the student' learning, she cares, & each lecture is engaging as hell. Anker makes the GW PSC/AMST department what it is. Doing the readings will do nothing but help you, tho she covers the material (generally) in class. Take this class!!!
I was so intimidated by Prof. Anker the first week and thought about dropping, but I am so glad I stayed. She knows her stuff! Her teaching style is amazing and engaging and helps immensely with retention of material. I do wish she would record lecture, but think that is part of her no technology approach. Would recommend and do not be intimidated!
Extremely opinionated professor - I think personal opinions have some space in classrooms, but not to the extent that this Professor went. That is my honest answer to why she gets a low rating from my side. Other than that, her class is very easy if you put in minimal effort. Would not take again just so I would not have to hear about her opinions
She would go on tangents about Trump for no reason which was just kind of confusing, but she was mostly good. I had a bad TA who graded really strict
Professor Anker basically lectured in a hurry the entire 50 minutes of each class. No electronics in the classroom, so if you missed a part of the lecture notes, you won't ever see it again. Assessments were given with rules similar to AP courses in high school. A lot of timed essays! Class really depends on the TA you get and my TA was awesome.
Prof Anker clearly is very passionate about the subject and a wonderful person. She cares about her students and want them to succeed. Take notes during lecture. Your grade will depend on the TA. Read summaries of the readings and go to the film screenings and you should be fine. Definitely take this class if you can!
good lecturer in politics and film. TAs grade essay exams and final paper which make up the grade for the class. participation in discussions and screenings of films is mandatory and graded but lectures are not (~100 people in an elliot lecture hall)
Politics and film with Prof Anker is a class I'd recommend to any poly sci major. Really unique class with lecture and a weekly screening, as well as discussion section with a TA. Lectures are short and sweet. Lots of reading and bi-weekly in-class paper essay exams. The final paper is based on a film of your choice. Would recommend!
Class comprises 4 quizzes (in-class essays), participation, and a final paper. Attending her 1+ lecture and then film screening the same day was time-consuming. Film screening and discussion section attendance is mandatory. However, if you don't go to the lecture you really won't know what to write for the in-class essay. TA grades everything.
Prof Anker is amazing and class was thought provoking. I learned a lot about critical aspects of American political thought. Units were interesting and presented well. I noticed relatively strong political bias in some lecture materials. There were some factually incorrect statements made in lecture and false generalizations on gov't regulation.
Professor Anker is an amazing lecturer, and I learned so much from the readings (particularly Tocqueville). I recently transferred to GWU and she is a true example of the intellectual minds that this school has. There are 4 essay in-class exams, and one final paper with the movie of your choice! Attend all movie screenings (it's attendance!)
This class was interesting and honestly you can get by without doing all of the readings, although they are interesting and you might want to read all of them. Most of your work will be graded by your TA, however, so just hope you have one that is leninant. Molly was a great TA, if you can get her you are golden. Anker gives interesting lectures!
Very easy class, only work is a 1 page paper every two weeks and 6-8 page final paper. Lectures and movies were super fun and discussions were even better (but that depends on your TA). Def take this class if you need something lax in your schedule.
The class has 4 in-class essay exams that have 3 SAQs, and you choose 2 to write. Then, you have a final essay that you write about any movie using the readings learned in class. TA grades everything; the ones we had were amazing. The professor is a great speaker you do have to buy some books one being hers which was funny.
Grade depends on TA. She doesent use slides for lectures and kind of just speaks at you so if you miss something she says you are doomed, shes kind of unorganzied and lectures can be very hard to follow. You have to read like 2 books a week,
She is very disorganized with lectures, she uses no slides and just rambles, and no computers are allowed. The TAs are the backbone of the course, Anker doesn't communicate with students. Grades are based on 3 in-class AP style essays, a 3-4 and 4-6 page paper. Easy for a WID, just be prepared to take lecture notes quickly.
Forces the class to buy her book, then tried to tie in every aspect of the class into her book.
4 in-person written essay exams, just look at your notes before going, + 1 paper. You need to go to the lectures. If you go to class and take notes on the lecture and watch the movies you will be fine. Don't really need to do the readings.
Anker is super anti-technology; will not let you take notes on a computer unless you have DSS accommodations. There are a few in-class essays throughout the semester based on the readings and movies you have to watch. The readings are incredibly long and tedious: at least 80 pages weekly. Your grade depends on what TA you have; hope for a nice one.
Very disorganized lectures with no powerpoints and doesent post notes on blackboard. You will have to buy like 30 books or not do the readings, including her book which doesent make much sense. Grade depends on TA. Graded by 2 papers and a few in class essays. I didnt talk to her once.
Lots of reading assigned. I didn't do it because one of the books was her own. Teaching isn't meant just to be a way to sell your book.
This class is easy. It is heavily dependent on your TA. Matthew is an amazing TA and is very passionate. Overall you can skip lectures, you just have to go to movie screenings and discussions. The paper grades depend on your TA, but everyone seems to do well.
This prof is super high and mighty she makes you read her own book for the class. overall pretty easy material but get ready to read at least 80 pages a week and show up to a lecture, film screening, and discussion. she only shows up for the huge lecture and the TAs do the majority of the teaching and all the grading. pray you get a good TA
Prof. Anker is second to none. So incredibly insightful and knowledgable. She has impacted my way of thinking like no other professor. Take her when you have time to give the class solid effort. God bless this woman — she's a gift to GW and possibly humanity.
Professor Anker answers her emails quickly and is great at communicating with students. I don't know what else to say because this class was a lecture of 150 students so the wonderful TAs did most of the work with the students directly. Great intro class to American Studies and Film Studies so if you're a freshman, highly recommend!
Professor Anker's class is engaging, with thought-provoking lectures and films. While the workload is manageable, attendance is crucial. unstuck AI and ChatGPT proved helpful for exam prep.
If you're a graduate student expecting guidance, support, or even basic respect, Professor Anker will quickly disabuse you of such quaint notions. Professor Anker rarely acknowledges the lived pressures or precarity graduate students face at GW. She'd rather just talk as if she too once roughed it in life at State school (Berkeley).
Using a course as a means of pitching one's own scholarship is quite flaky.
Overall easy class. Doing the readings is not necessary if you show up to every lecture and truly listen and take notes. Tests will be very easy if you take good notes and just read over them a few times. Things are graded by TAs, but I haven't heard anything negative about any of the TAs and I had a very good time with my TA.
She makes everyone take notes by hand and her lectures have no slides to go with them. You must show up to both lecture, discussion, and film screening to do well in the class, but the assignments themselves are not hard. A lot of reading from 3 different books, but the main information in her lectures is what matters the most.
A great art credit for polisci students and people who like to write instead of take tests.
Had her over the summer in a small, heavily discussion-based section. As other's mentioned, no electronics at all. Mandatory attendance that acts as a grade buffer. Honestly just the sweetest person ever, and really insightful. Clearly passionate about the topic and wants students to feel the same way. Would love to take her again.
She's fine. Honestly did not see her much because I didn't really attend her morning lectures (the morning ones aren't mandatory only screening and discussions are). BUT MATTHEW the TA is amazing. I genuinely would take this class again JUST to be in his discussions again. He is so nice and intelligent and amazing. So obviously TA is important.
very intelligent, but lectures can get extremely disengaging because there are no slides with it. despite that, the lectures contain very helpful information that will do you well for the essay quizzes and discussions. I loved my TA, Khadijah, she's really funny and smart and the TA's grade everything. make sure to show up and read everything.
