Great class if you follow directions. Speeches are hard if not conversational. Grades hard on time, overall gives you the chance to make up points missed. I learned a lot.
She is SUCH a nice and friendly person! I loved this class! The tests are hard, you definitely have to study for, but she explains things very well and gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities
Extremely nice teacher, pay attention and you'll do fine. Gives lots of opportunities for e.c. Learned a lot.
Good teacher. Tests / quizzes are hard but she gives plenty of extra-credit to make up for it! Don't take it at 8 am!
I think she's a great teacher. The tests and quizzes are easy if you just study the book. Class is pretty fun and easy to pay attention in. there's actually a lot of work. But she also gives a lot of extra credit quizzes if you arent doing well!
GCOM+8am=falling asleep. This class is another pointless one. Some work involved. Boring, but just do everything. Attendance policy. Shes real nice.
Very nice teacher. Always willing to help. Quizzes are sorta tough, must read the chapters to do well. Only two group speeches, but they are fun and pretty easy to do.
want as a teacher, not a hard class if you read through the chapters (meaning skim) She seems to give good examples to help you remember terms. Grades easy on your 2 presentations. Has lots of EC, take advantage :)
easy good grade..puts extra credit quizzes online for you to take. pushes the attendance policy hard though
Really nice but sort of strict with attendance and grades. Lots of extra credit, and online help, and you must do two group presentations so if your shy you might want to take that into account. overall, shes a good teacher.
VERY nice! she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and makes the class interesting..have an A in that class! has an attendance policy, but i would definately recommend her.
A really nice lady. You get to watch movies in class, which really helps you understand the concepts. Quizes require reading the book. I liked this class and would recommend her.
Pretty easy gcom teacher. She isnt the easiest but you can get an A. The gcom final was really hard and everyone in the course takes the same one.
Hands down best gcom teacher. Shes so nice and really goes over material. Very clear with her concepts. Tests can be a little tricky, but read the book and you'll do fine. Always has a good story.
awesome prof. strict attendance policy, but you will want to go. my favorite class this semester. extremely clear on grading procedures, and you can view your grades online.
8 AMs are not cool...easy class and nice person though! I've never read a chapter and still have an A.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! her class was my absolte favorite this semester! she is like having a mom because she wants you to do well in her class! i wish she could teach all my communications classes! TAKE HER..youll be sorry if you dont!
Wow. Another fine work of JMU's GenEd program. If you need GCOM, Armstrongs a pick. She's very easy, wants you to do well, very nice. Her lectures are awful, but luckily a lot of presenations and movies. Only one test. Strict attendance policy, shy away from the 8am...
she is not only a good teacher but a cool person. She understands us and relates her teaching to that. The only thing that was hard was the test and then the exam. You really need to study the book and for her online quizes you need to read the chapters she assigns. She does take attendance. I reall
I really enjoyed this class. It was incredibly easy and actually very interesting. You have to read the book but if you do that and participate in the presentations you will have no problem getting an A
The class itself is of course not the most exciting, however I did enjoy having Armstrong. She is funny, clear, and fairly helpful with what you need to do. She has some very wild stories! Quizes are posted online each monday, which means you should "read" your book.
The class in gen. sucks,Armstong is OK. Nothing to hard, but is very unclear in what she wants from your presentations (3). you get to pick the presentation topics. 4 dyadic papers(meet someone for lunch, write about you convo w/ vocab)not the worst teacher you could have. Strict attend. policy 2 abs
Class blew, no real reason to goto class besides the attendance policy, everything is out of the book. While she is very nice, sometimes it seemed like she was just lecturing out of the book, and didn't know anything anecdotal to add to discussions. Overall it's not too hard and sort of fun at times
Very strict attendance policy (allowed 2 absences and then get 5% deducted from final grade for every additional absence), get to pick topics for speeches, but she is very unclear about what she expects, lectures come straight from the book, so I don't know why she is even teaching at this school
She's not a bad teacher. Her tests & quizes r not easy but she is not a hard grader on the speeches(but she's not easy either). She lets you pick ur topic on speeches & u only have to make 2 (40 minute) and 1 (20 min speech). She cancels class a couple times to get together with your group.
There are three presentations. She assigns you to groups, but you get to pick your own topics. She is an easy grader on presentations, but the test is difficult. Strict attendance policy. Lectures come directly from the book. Class is boring, but she tells stories and shows movies.
She's a really nice lady and grades papers pretty easily. However she is unclear on what she expects from you in your speeches. She lets you pick your topics but not your groups. Only 3 speeches. Not a bad class. If you come to class and do your work you should get an A or B.
gcom sucks in general. probably one of the better teachers because she makes the class pretty simple- 2 big presentations on a topic of your choice. her attendance policy sucks tho... especially for such an awful class @ 9 am u can only be absent 2X. booo gcom.
Let me put it this way...i had a 1.8 gpa at the end of the first semester and i had an A in her class. The key is going to class and doing the easy extra credit assignments.
I really liked Prof. Armstrong, but she is easily hateable. She never grades anything on time, so don't plan on knowing your grade in the class till the end of the semester. The book sucks, but you gotta read it,and the speeches suck even more. But she is very nice, so I guess I recommend her.
Armstrong is a fun teacher. She relates topics to her family a lot. The book is an easy read, just tedious. Final is strictly out of the book, so reading is a must. Only 3 presentations. You get to pick your topics on two of them but not your group.
Who wants to take this class anyway?? At least she makes it fun and trys to keep you interested.
She's a nice lady but not my favorite professor. She gives examples, but sometimes I didn't always really get them. She gives a lot of work, but it's not hard work. But she doesn't grade them very efficiently. READ THE BOOK. The final is straight from it and it's standardized for all freshmen. MUST do the work, she'll help you if she can.
She's a babe! I love her and I want to be a comm. major after taking her class.
pretty easy, but very unclear about what her expectations are for assignments. Make sure you get any requirements she has for assignments in writing, because she'll change her mind about what she wants and take off points. READ THE BOOK-every GCOM class takes the same final and it's straight from the text, you'll need the good exam grade w/ her!
Professor Armstrong is awesome! Class is always really fun, there isn't a lot of work, you need to learn more of the vocabulary from the text than actually reading it. Exams aren't that hard. You only have to do two presentations, and a really easy project. Online quizzes, so you can use your book. Fun and really nice. TAKE THIS CLASS!
If you can take her then grab this opportunity to enjoy GCOM. She is fun and smart. The class is not hard and the presentations are easy as long as you don't wait untill the night before you present to work on it. Take her and love her!
Overall I enjoyed the class. She is very nice and had a lot of energy for a 9AM class. At the beginning she explained things a lot more but not as good towards the end. Her class is not cake work, but definately not the hardest and very interesting. There's not many tests but the ones that she gives are a little challenging. I enjoyed the class.
shes a genuinely sweet lady who cares about the students. the class is not hard at all and theres rarely any homework.. the only thing that might get you are the presentations, but even those arent so bad since she grades pretty easy. i recommend her if you can get her!
She is nice and the class is easy. 4 speeches and that is pretty much it. Just go to class and practice your speech.
she is an extremely nice lady, classes are good in the beginning but towards the end, she gets a little lazy. not much work, just 2 group presentations and a couple exams. exams come STRAIGHT from the book. presentations are hard work but if you do what she says youll definetly get an a. good class for a gened. id say take it
I had her freshmen year, she was totally great, especially since now I can compare her with so many other professors. Just appreciate her good nature, and don't **** about doing the work!
shes a good teacher, keeps me interested in class, but i hate her attitude towards homework, i feel like im in highschool again, doing bull**** homework
I have no interest in communications, but she made it easy. 2 presentations (I got As on both), a few quizzes in the beginning, some extra assignments... Definitely doable. Not a cake walk for an A, but it can be done. I hear the final is hard though since it's for all gcom classes...we will soon see.
Is a nice lady, she teaches by the book. Gives out too much work for a class very few are interested in. Was not interested in comm before and am not now. Is unclear about assignment and unreasonably high expectations for group presentations. There has to be a better teacher for this class somewhere.
I hate comm classes and this was no exception, but that didn't have anything to do with prof. Armstrong. She is nice, enthusiastic, and helpful. Lectures were a bit dry and unclear though.
Not a bad professor. Class is very boring but its pretty easy.
Armstrong is a fun teacher. Shes always positive and is really willing to help you out. Although attendance is mandatory you have 3 to miss. This is a class thats not a pain to go to-its fun :)
This class was a LOT of fun. We analysed movies, 2 presentations. The quizzes are difficult, and the class work is easy. We really worked hard, but she made it fun.
horrible teacher, doesnt teach anything so if you want to pass the final you have to learn everything yourself outside of class, 2 presentations, weekly quizzes that are impossible, take anyone but her
good teacher, definitely loves what she teaches. if you want to do well in this class though you definitely have to pay attention during lecture and take notes. reading the chapters also helps. fair teacher, and fair grader. 2 presentations, quiz roughly every week. attendence is mandatory-- 3 unexcused absenses allowed, more lowers your grade.
I loved professor Armstrong!! She is an extremely laid back and pleasant woman. Very approachable and willing to work with you. 2 presentations, a few online quizzes and a final. Make sure you keep up with your reading and you will do just fine.
not good at all...really has no idea what she is doing. Tells us what not to do for our speaches and then does it while talking in front of us. Two projects graded ok, tests and quizes are hard. Attendance policy and really boring. One test, she said we were wrong...we showed her we were correct in the book, and she still said we were wrong.
Well, she's probably one of the better professors, considering what a useless, absurd class this is. Any class that involves a concentrated number of idiotic freshmen is bound to be awful. The tests and quizzes are often poorly written, but I don't think she has a choice of writing them. She's a fair grader for the presentations.
GCOM isn't the most fun class you'll take. It's a lot of work, but in the end I learned a lot. Armstrong really helped me.
Eh, she's alright. Tries to make it entertaining, but it really isn't. It's hard to get ahold of, inconvenient office hours, because she's a grad student, and still teaching her classes. Kind of a hypocrite about saying what not to do, but she does it anyways. It takes work if you want a B or an A
inconsistent. her tests and quizzes are a piece of cake but she grades the presentations really hard. unclear, doesn't give a clear rubric for presentations so you're pretty much on your own. she's nice and pleasant, and it's a pretty easy class, but if you actually want to get something out of it i wouldn't take armstrong.
Although her grading is somewhat inconsistent, it is a very easy class and she is a very nice women. She is easy to talk too, and there are extremely easy weekly quizzes and the exams are pretty much straight from those quiz questions which are also easy. As long as you put time into presentation you will do fine. Take it!
Professor was a very nice person. Must follow her guide lines for presentations very closely. Reading quizzes are easy. Actual tests in class do not come completely from the book, which made them slightly difficult to study for, however this was not due to the teacher(All GCOM classes had difficulty with test to some degree) Knew her subject area.
Prof. Armstrong is a terrible teacher, if you can even call her that. She uses old power point presentations that often aren't relevant to the class. She doesn't even know the answers to some of the questions on her tests because she doesn't make them. She was unreasonably inflexible with her grading. She should not be a teacher at any level.
Great professor, fun class. We didn't learn from lecture until about a month left in the semester. 3 tests (one was only like 20 questions) and 2 group presentations (pretty easy). GCOM is an easy class and she was an easy teacher, looked forward to going to class (we watched Spanglish for a week). Very nice lady, I would take her again
Pretty good teacher. Easy to get a B in her class but hard to get an A. Basicly 2 group presentations and 3 short tests along with a few online quizes. She didn't teach much but GCOM is a pretty easy subject. I would recomend her if you want an easy B. If you are looking for an A you might want to look somewhere else though.
Armstrong is a really nice person. She wasn't very organized with her powerpoints and a lot of times we just ended class 20 minutes early. We got to watch Spanglish, 2 group presentations, tons of online quizes and 3 written written exams that aren't a huge portion of your overall grade. Class was really boring, but I would reccomend taking her.
Armstrong is a great prof! Weekly quizzes are easy, first two tests are a little hard- third test is a group one. Uses the point system so easy to keep a B or A. Ask her for help on presentations or what to study for the tests, makes the difference between an A and a B
Easy to get along with and has interesting classes for the most part. It is very laid back, you learn a good amount if you read the book which you should for quizzes. Attendance is mandatory but you can miss like 3. Never really homework. Not too harsh on grading speeches. Take if you are looking for somewhat easy & unchallenging class.
Easy to get along with. Class material is boring. She does not use any of her own powerpoints and is clueless when it comes to blackboard. Her cluelessness is frustrating sometimes but she gives extra credit options in attempt to make up for it.
Great personality, and very relatable. Tough tests, but if you do well on the quizzes and actually read the material, you can do really well in this class.
I liked Armstrong but hated the way she would grade. Very hard grader on presentations and her answer keys to tests and quizzes were often wrong. I liked her as a person but not as a teacher.
Professor Armstrong, is a very nice lady but, not the best teacher. You end up mostly just watching movie clips and youtube videos to learn the material. This is not an effective teaching method for me atleast so had to study and read the text alot. She grades speeches too harshly and her exams are hard. You need to teach yourself especially forfina
She is a nice lady, but not the best teacher. We only had 2 quizzes at the beginning of the semester. The rest of the semester we did presentations and watched pointless movies. Her tests were hard because she didn't really teach the material. It's easy to get a good grade, but you have to go to class and teach yourself.
For a class that is required, it was not bad. Mrs. Armstrong works with you if you try. She was always willing to help. She's a great teacher.
Armstrong was a good teacher. She does online quizzes which are simple. There are two tests including the final. You only have two speeches the entire year. If you take and give minimum effort, easy A.
great teacher, really wants the students to do well. She posts quizzes on blackboard- easy ten points, you can retake them as many times as you want. Presenatations were easy enough, and she only counts the best grade! Group members make or break the class.
Really really nice teacher! so understanding. Class is fairly easy. If your looking to actually get something out of GCOM though, she is not exactly the best teacher to take.
Wonderful lady, she really wants you to do well. Chapter quizzes online you can do until you get 10/10. 2 speeches which are easy. Groups are random. Extra credit opportunities. She's very friendly and wants you to do well. Take her :) Use the book a lot.
Armstrong is really nice. The class wasn't particularly interesting, but it was laid back. The first presentation is demanding but the quizzes are online and super easy, you can take them as many times as you need to get the best grade. She's just really nice and the class isn't too hard.
Mrs. Armstrong is one of the best teachers I had. Her quizzes are online and you can take them as many time as you want until you get a 100. Her first test was in a group and the rest of the tests were easy as long as you study the terms. There's 2 tests and a final. I would really recommend her. The topics for speeches are your choice. take her!
She's a good professor for GCOM. She doesn't make the class harder than it needs to be. Very nice and very helpful. Only two presentations (easy) and online quizzes you can keep retaking until you get a 100. You can get an A with only a decent amount of studying out of the textbook.
Nice lady, but she doesnt teach--basically just tells you to google stuff to find out how to do it, rather than telling you how to do it. And this is a communications class, so why doesn't she use powerpoints or something like that? AWFUL teacher. Wish I had taken someone else.
Very sweet lady that cares about her class and gets to know all of her students. This class is a doable A if you can keep on top of your work and get along with your group. (You stay with the same group all semester)
Professor Armstrong is sort of like a mom. I really enjoyed having her as a teacher. However, at times the class was difficult. She will help you if you want to helped , but just know that she can be a hard grader. Outlines must be done correctly and just how she wants them or points are deducted.
She is great! She knows what she is talking about and if you actually pay attention she will help you do well on the final, which sucks so much. The tests are fair and she grades your speeches fair as well. The hw quizzes are a grade booster and its not hard to get an B+ or better. Just o the reading and participate and you are good to go!
She's a really nice lady but she is very disorganized and doesnt explain what she's looking for in the presentations. You can take the quizess until you get a 100 so thats good and the exams arent too hard. She's okay but I would say take someone else if you like organization like me.
I love Professor Armstrong! I didn't come in as an SCOM major, but after taking her class I decided to switch over. She's very nice and incredibly helpful. Her projects are easy if you follow the instructions exactly. The first test is a group test, but make sure you keep up with the text book for the second one. Easy A.
Professor Armstrong is an okay teacher. She grades presentations pretty hard. The class is basically taught by homework assignments to read the book.
Armstrong is NOT qualified to teach this course. She barely know the AP format herself and relies WAY too much on the textbook. She is a sweet woman, and the class is not hard, but I did not learn anything. She also forgot to order our textbooks for the semester so we all had to order them online which took weeks. Overall I would not recommend.
Professor Armstrong is one of the best teachers I've ever had at JMU! She's patient and kindhearted; and teaches in a way that is easy to learn from. She has rubrics that are guidelines for you to do your workpresentations. If you follow instructions correctly, it is easy to pass her class. Would take every class with her if I could!
Take her for comm!! She's absolutely amazing, so nice, and her classes are always enjoyable. She's funny, and always incorporates funny movies/videos into her lectures. The tests are done IN YOUR GROUP! Group presentations are nerve-wracking, but she doesn't grade too harshly! Very encouraging, she's just great! :)
Professor Armstrong is a good teacher; you can tell she cares about her students and she is easy to interact with. That said, she is a tough grader.
Take her. Definitely my favorite class. She's very easy to get along with and is super nice.
Dr. Armstrong is a very nice and funny person but I do not recommend her as a professor. The tests are based off of nothing she teaches so you have to figure out how to teach yourself and she does not make study guides. Extremely harsh grader on presentations if you do not have everything the exact way she envisions it, which she never explains.
She's really kind and will answer any questions you have openly. She grades really harshly when it comes to presentations and is really nit-picky. Follow the rubric exactly.
worst professor ever...
Professor Armstrong is a fantastic professor. She prepares you for the final and exams very well by posting a study guide. She is available in office hours and responds well to emails. She grades easily and I ended up with an A with minimal effort put in this semester. If you're bad at group presentations, this is not the class for you.
Follow directions. You'll get an A.
Dr. Armstrong isn't a bad choice for SCOM. However, I wouldn't recommend her because of the simple fact that she doesn't prepare classes well. All the classes consist of just movies and
Dr. Armstrong is a great professor and very knowledgeable. However, she does not always prepare well for classes, and she is not very clear about grading criteria. You also don't really get much feedback on graded assignments. She is definitely flexible though, which I really appreciated.
Honestly Dr. Armstrong just lets you do your thing. If you slack, she doesn't care. Overall, the class was average. I had a tough time meeting with my group and in turn, our grade suffered slightly. Although she prepares you for the final, sometimes lectures seemed spontaneous and ill-prepared. In addition, attendance is required.
She's very easy. Honestly if you just show up and follow her directions, you'll probably get an A. Half the semester is lecture, the other half is "online" where you turn in a few assignments but have no other homework. She isn't always clear but she's very friendly. Doesn't give a lot of feedback. I'd take for an easy A and low stress
I really enjoyed Dr. Armstrong's lectures and thought the readings from the textbook were interesting. For the group projects I would definitely utilize the communications learning center, it helped my group and our grade a lot. She prepares you for the final pretty well unlike some teachers.
Literally, the worst, made us watch Spanglish... talk about bad acting even though it was used to show effective communication. Very harsh grader, don't believe what other people say, will say you do great in a presentation, and then when you get your grade from her it's not great.
I thoroughly enjoyed armstrong's class. I was petrified of giving speeches, and not the best at it, but she was good at breaking speeches down to make them seem more simple and less scary. She's a kind teacher, and gives good feedback. It seemed like she cared about everyone and wanted everyone to do well.
I took this class to become a better writer, but I haven't learned much. She hasn't graded things from the 1st week of class, and she acts like she's the busiest person ever as if students aren't too. I strongly advise PR students not take her because she will not teach you what you must know to move on in the major even if you get an A.
Sweet lady, it's more than just group presentations though. You have to read the textbook because there are exams and quizzes, however the good thing is that you can take it as many times as you want. NEVER answers her emails but she provides her cell info. Helpful with advice on public speaking when preparing us for our speeches
This professor is extremely unavailable outside of class. She does not grade your assignments quickly and barely gives you any guidance when it comes to your presentations. All she will tell you is if your topic is easy or hard, nothing else. The tests are extreme, but the textbook quizzers are nice since they are online and unlimited tries.
Your overall grade in SCOM 123 will mainly come from the 2 speeches you have to present. Minimal studying needed outside of class to get good grades on the few tests she gives. In SCOM 123 you're required to meet outside of class with your group at least once a week. If you get a lazy group it sucks, but Armstrong is a super easy teacher!
In this class you have two speeches, two tests, weekly quizzes (super easy), and a final. At the end of the semester there is opportunity for 10 points of extra credit. It is not the easiest A but it isn't too hard. The first test is taken with your group so hope you have a good group.
She wasn't THAT bad, I just found her super frustrating. She never explained things well and she tested us on things that she barely went over in class. She also grades pretty harsh on presentations without really explaining why. Pro tip though, just make your presentation entertaining and you will be allot more likely to get a better grade.
Shes supposedly a communication teacher but SUCKS at answering in a timely manner. She said how easy it was to access her but doesnt answer emails, and rarely answers if you text her. She takes forever to put grades in but says how quick she grades everything.
Not clear communication for a communication professor
Dr. Armstrong was friendly most of the time, but she thinks her gen ed far too important. My group was the first to present and she graded us harshly and gave little explanation why. Got an A anyways because the subject itself is common sense, but chapter quizzes and extensive presentation outlines made the class way more work than it was worth
Prof. Armstrong is a really sweet lady who cares about her students. However, she is extremely difficult and unclear as to exactly what she wants, especially with regards to the presentations (1 informative, 1 persuasive) that account for 60% of your grade. She is also disorganized, so be prepared to look for everything on your own with no guidance
Dr. Armstrong is a good lecturer and I have learned a lot from her. However, the presentations she assigns have very specific grading criteria and are very difficult to pull off with an A. She is also very disorganized and gives many ambiguous homework assignments that you will need to search under your bed to find (if they're even published).
Although Im sure she wants us to do well, Dr. Armstrong was the worst professor Ive ever had. Her lectures and guidance on assignments and speeches are extremely unclear, she was late to class EVERY DAY, she even left class early to pay a fine at the police station one day. All in all, extremely unreliable, dont recommend.
I 100% would not recommend her. Rather than teaching from her own knowledge, she uses 10 year old powerpoints that arent completely relevant anymore and dont contain vital information. She was never clear with directions and changed due dates all the time because she couldnt keep up with anything. Always late to class too. PICK SOMEONE ELSE!!!!!
This professor is the absolute worst I've ever had. She does not communicate (which is funny because its a communication class...), and does not teach. We have to teach ourselves from the book and then hope to pass the exams (that she doesn't announce till the day before) and her Canvas page is incredibly disorganized. Random inconsistent due dates
Honestly this woman is just straight up confusing. Email her and she may answer. You meet with your group instead of class one day of the week and you never really know what to be doing. She does try to be a good teacher just ironically her communication with her students is subpar.
Armstrong completely failed at reestablishing the class after classes went online. Failure to communicate at all on when our final was the week before (because its online), assigns meaningless stuff that were due the last semester, and takes forever to grade anything that isn't the presentations, so you have no idea where you stand in the semester.
Professor Armstrong is an amazing woman, but WOW.. she takes the cake for "Most Unorganized Person on Earth". We didn't do half the things we were supposed to do. If you want an easy A, take her, but don't expect your money's worth out of this one. The class is 5 speeches, one 2 minutes, four 7 minutes long. You talk about whatever until time is up
Easy A. Took for an online summer class to get a SCOM requirement out of the way. Very easy, clear grading. Do the work, take feedback, and you'll get an A. tests are easy and questions are word for word straight out of the textbook.
Lady tells you THE DAY OF when you have exams. As hard as my major specific classes and she makes everything so much more confusing than it has to be. Also doesn't help that she lives in the middle of nowhere and is a bad communicator while she teaches a communications class.
This class was a dud for me. Can't say how she was in the past, but in terms of her online course it was a nightmare at some points. You'd be much better off with another SCOM professor.
AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS ESPECIALLY IF IT IS ONLINE!! This is THE worst class I have ever taken. From her inability to email students back to constantly unclear directions, I was constantly in confusion in this class. It was completely asynchronous and almost impossible to contact her with any questions. Tests are hard for no reason. Terrible!
For the life of her cannot not properly communicate what is due and when it is due. Blames her internet more than a handful of times as an excuse as to why some assignments take up to 4 weeks to grade and she does not seem to respond to emails unless you send it to her MULTIPLE times.
Impossible to reach outside of class. Uploaded a module every Monday around 11am with several assignments due that same day. Was never clear on instructions for assignments, projects, and due dates. Does not grade on time or correctly.
This professor is the WORST!!!!! She never responds to emails, is so unorganized, grades almost everything during finals week, and never lets you make up work. I missed a test to see my brother in rehab and even with proof she gave me a 0 which ruined my full grade after the withdrawal period. DO NOT TAKE HER PLEASE!!!
This class wasn't very difficult but most of the assignments were just busywork. She also is a terrible communicator. The purpose of her emails wasn't shown and the assignment instructions weren't clear. Not the best professor for this class.
I only signed up for this class because it was my only option left (I had read previous reviews and knew what I was getting myself into. I didn't take the reviews seriously enough. Cancels class all the time, doesn't respond to emails, and ASSIGNS EXAMS THE DAY OF. Canvas is never updated, and she doesn't care if you pass or fail. Do NOT take.
Cancels class a lot of the time which you might enjoy, but you end up not knowing what you have to do and it getting dumped on you. For instance, she published an exam the day before we were to take it, without mentioning it, and me and all 5 of my group mates were left surprised to study 5 chapters in 1 night to prep.
She cancels class a lot. Which is okay if you give us enough information to be on our own. Gives us an exam out of no where, and doesn't tell us what to study for and gives us the wrong study guide and the chapters don't match what we learned. her instructions are not very clear.
She really likes to give strict presentation grades in such a simple gen-ed class. If you have a bad group of partners, you and your group-mates will all finish with a poor grade in the class. A lot of confusing assignments that are hard to navigate on canvas, and it just gets really annoying. I don't reccomend.
Such an easy class. Interesting material but all her assignments are really easy to wing. Her tests come almost directly from the textbook. You have one group project which was not bad, a few tests, and discussion posts. She is really sweet and understanding of things. She doesn't respond to emails very quickly so be prepared but take her!!
Nice and caring. Easy to talk to and funny. Lectures can be kind of boring. Most of grades are based on group presentations. Can be a lot of work outside of class just because of group work but that's to be expected from an SCOM class. Tests are directly from book/state exams and there are tons of quizlets.
Very middle-of-the-road SCOM prof. If you have a bad group, everyone will fail so you have to be lucky or do a lot of work. You have to meet for an hour a week with your group. Quizzes and vocab cards are super easy and will definitely help boost your grade, group presentations are graded much more heavily though. Not an easy A, but a fair class.
Really unorganized. Hops around and is just confusing. Seemed to make up rules as she goes. If she doesn't like you, it shows in your grade. Can be unusually harsh and random in grading, rubrics are super confusing. Obviously group project class, so those weigh a majority on your grade.
Really bad at communicating with students outside of class. But the class was not difficult by any means. Took forever to grade assignments. Really nice lady but really frustrating trying to get in touch with her and can sometimes be pretty confusing.
She's a mixed bag. Class is easy. She blares Scottish bagpipe music DURING LECTURES. I have absolutely ZERO idea on why she thinks this is a good idea. She is also, ironically, a horribly difficult person to communicate with outside of seeing her in person. Other than that, any other gripe you can have with the class is based on your group members.
Awful. She assigns intro level scom students a 50 minute presentation as their first one. We took a test 2 months ago that she still has not graded. Grades speeches super harshly. She never discussed the MREST or SONA with us so we had to figure that out on our own. Paying for a MWF class and she doesn't teach on Fridays. Take someone else.
Avoid this professor at all costs. Usually very late to update canvas for grades, would play scottish bag pipe music or other loud sounds while doing attendance so its hard to hear your name called. Speech lengths are SOOO much longer than other SCOM 123 classes (around 35 mins total for the informational speech as opposed to around 18-20 mins)
Do not take this class with this professor, she is unclear when it comes to grading, strict, the group presentations are difficult and the requirements are so vague yet she demands everything to be in a precise way, she also will never answer your emails.
SCOM 123 (group) with Armstrong was decent. Speeches were 5 mins per person (other professors can be about 2). Exams were difficult! Need to read the chapters and really understand - answers are open to interpretation, confusing. Gave us little information about SONA or the MREST. Easy chapter quizzes. 2 missed class then 5% off grade.
Very blunt and unapproachable. If you have questions about anything good luck because she doesn't respond to any emails. Doesn't understand how to use canvas and takes forever to grade. Tests are hard and confusing when they shouldn't be. Have to figure out Mrest on your own because she doesn't even mention anything about it.
Not a bad class, but I would take another SCOM professor + class if you can. She is very hard to get in contact with outside of class, super unorganized, takes forever to grade, and has tougher presentation guidelines than other SCOM professors. Also, if your assigned group is bad this class sucks. I would recommend taking SCOM 121 or 122 instead.
Pros: Great class, took in summer school, teacher is very understanding & accommodating, is her 5th year teaching the class, has experience as a journalist Cons: is tons of writing, enough for an entire semester; difficult to complete it all in only 4 weeks. Suggestions: Class would have benefited from a 15 min. Zoom check-in each morning,
Professor Armstrong wasn't a bad teacher, but she was extremely hard to get into contact with, had a lot of scheduling issues which made test and presentation dates very difficult to understand, and did a lot of things last minute. I would not recommend taking unless you are ready to stress about last minute projects and constant date changes
this was a group presentation class and the only reason why I got a good grade is because I got out in a good group and we all became friends. She is a very nice person and the class is not hared whatsoever. She is very disorganized and her canvas page is so confusing but overall I would recommend if you don't mind working in a group.
She is the worst! She randomly add assignment all the time. If you miss a class you are screw. She has so many random little assignments, that you have to do but don't help your grade. Her exams are so hard! The best grade in my class was a 77 on the first exam. The syllabus is useless. She is not understanding. She is very unorganized.
She is inaccessible outside of class. She gives you about 5 forms of ways to reach out to her outside of class and she doesn't answer any one of them. It took her a month to get back to me about a simple question. Her exams were literally impossible. DO NOT RECOMMEND
She barely knows how to do an online class. She will never respond to texts, emails, or even phone calls. Almost everyday there was some sort of problem with her computer and she will even randomly cancel class because she cant understand her computer.
First, the class is naturally speech-oriented so be prepared for 5 7-minute speeches. Self and peer evals. Now, she was very kind and cares about the material. However, she was VERY difficult to reach out of class. Syllabus and organization seemed strict, but in reality was too unorganized and many of us were often confused. She's understanding tho
Armstrong is a nice lady, This class is made up of 7 minute speeches every 2 weeks and wasn't that difficult. She randomly didn't show up for a week of class, is completely unreachable outside of class unless you text her phone number. Her canvas is unorganized. BUT the class itself isn't very difficult, speeches are just stressful. average class
Armstrong's group presentations are unnecessarily more difficult than other teachers (NOT ENOUGH TIME, longer speeches, harsher grading). She rarely responds to emails/texts outside of class and gives Fridays to work on presentations but then assigns movies, chapters, and/or exam study material to complete. Easily the most stressful gen ed.
The class wasn't necessarily hard, but she never gave clear guidelines for assignments, and everyone else in the class was just as lost. She would grade draft assignments based on format, and final assignments on the writing, which was annoying. We also had like 5 assignments due every week. She responds quickly and is accommodating too.
She does not know how to use Canvas. She would post due dates and put them as the year before, so everyone's assignments were late. Would often mess up everything technology-related, which was very annoying. Most unorganized prof I have had so far. She also is very unclear about her assignments and doesn't answer questions clearly.
Armstrong is a decent professor. She explains guidelines well and the class is very easy to pass with an A if you do the work. The only thing is that she is hard to contact out of class.
Does not respond to emails, despite saying that she will. Lectures do not teach you anything and she will not put in any grades until after you take your final (very frustrating to not have any idea what your grade is all semester.) Way more assignments and more difficult speeches and tests than other professors.
Professor Armstrong makes Scom 123 more difficult than it should be. Professor Armstrong is very nice, but presentations are graded extremely harsh and create unneeded pressure. Scom 123 caused be a ton of stress and exams were also incredibly difficult. If you are taking her class please make sure to study the textbook for exams.
Lectures don't teach much, and grading is tricky - no midterm grades until finals. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for preparing speeches and tests. Overall, a tough class, but doable with dedication.
I'm surprised by how lower her rating is. I absolutely loved her class and the way that she reached it. Sometimes, the classes felt a little unneeded. However, she was so clear with what she wanted from every assignment and presentation and if you paid attention to what she talks about requirement-wise during class you can easily get a good grade!
Armstrong's class is so much more difficult than need be for a gen ed. You will barely be able to take note during class because she lectures so quickly. Takes forever to grade things. Doesn't explain expectations on assignments clearly. Tests are very difficult and you'll have to teach yourself most of the information. Take a different professor.
She just takes herself too seriously. Grading is really harsh, she expects you to be perfect. Her class is harder than the honors SCOM. A lot of assignments so it's pretty easy to stay afloat with the smaller, easier things, but the projects and tests are ridiculously hard.
I can't say I have ever hated someone more. First of all, her lectures were useless and so were the assignments we did in class. Her tests made no sense and nothing we "learned" or did as activities helped at all. She is also almost impossible to reach outside of class. Sadly I do not get enough words to describe how bad of a professor she is.
Expects perfection when directions are not clearly stated. Lectures are pointless and drag on, but if you don't go to class you will be lost on the presentations. Smaller assignments to boost your grade but the exams are pointless and confusing with trick questions. She treats this GenEd like a major course - take it with literally anyone else.
She wasn't tech savvy so her canvas page is hard to navigate. Not a super tough grader, but criteria is uncertain. I would take her again because she cares about her students and wants to help you succeed. Exams aren't very straightforward and it is mostly common sense.
She is not available outside of class, she doesn't have office hours, and she is disorganized with her Canvas page, syllabus, and sometimes shows up late to our presentations. On top of all of this, she is a tough, nitpicky grader when it comes to presentations.
She's a pretty basic professor. Not bad at all, but not amazing. She is very sweet and has lots of time outside of class to meet. She takes awhile to grade but the first test is taken as a group. Requires one meeting per week with your group for one hour. Meeting notes are easy to fake though. I would take her again, easy gen ed.
Do not take this class!! She is very unorganized with canvas and all of her materials. There are frequent quizzes on top of group projects and exams. The exams are difficult, and it is always unclear what you are supposed to know for them. The class is overall confusing, stressful, and a waste of your time.
This professor is nice and will explain to you when you're in the classroom, but once you leave, she will not respond to an email. She is very unclear with her assignments and on top of that she is a very tough grader. Overall she is very difficult to work with and I would recommend taking SCOM 123 with another teacher.
I have never seen such a disorganized teacher in my entire life. She will post assignments with the wrong due dates, causing us to miss them. If you need help outside class, she rarely responds to emails. She's a harsh grader and expects you to be a flawless speaker first try. DO NOT TAKE HER PLZ!!She's test heavy and the final is truly IMPOSSIBLE
Do not take her. She is a really tough grader and expects perfection every time and doesn't even state instructions clearly. Also impossible to access her outside of class. There were multiple times where I asked her important questions through email or text and she didn't respond. She also often rambles about random family problems during lectures
Professor Armstrong isn't a bad professor- however you will have a much easier time in this class taking from another teacher. Her exams are vague and hard to study for and she grades pretty harshly on the speeches. You have to meet with your group ALOT outside of class. She is a nice person and clearly knowledgable, but it's not an easy class.
Impossible to please
Professor Armstrong is a very nice person, but I would not recommend her to anyone. She is an extremely harsh and picky grader, especially on the presentations. All of her rubrics and class lectures are super vague, causing you to do loads of work outside of class. If you are trying to get an easy ged ed credit or an easy A, I do not recommend.
I did like that we got practice doing presentations but we were required to follow formats on our outlines that weren't very clear. I do think they helped make the presentations more organized but I disagree with making it a requirement. She also had issues with technology so good luck communicating with her via email.
Going to class matters and the tests are pretty hard. Tough grader who leaves no room for error. Make sure you study a lot because the final sucks
