Very boring class, She is very nice. Tough grader, but straight to the point. No notes have to be taken during class and a minimal number of writing assignments.
She was so sweet and such an easy teacher. She'd be like "there MAY be a quiz tomorrow" which meant there was one...as if the warning was necessary, the quizzes were so easy if you even skimmed a story/play. She was so easy..so so easy!
Was a horrible professor. Extremely boring. Did not have a routine grading system, but instead just pulls a grade out of her head. do not take her.
Went to her for help on my paper and she said i was on the right track. Even went to the writing lab and got advice. Turned in my "right track" paper and got a C. ...that's not the track i wanted to be on. Quizzes are easy but lectures borin
she's a pretty cool teacher. she has few essays, but is kind of tough on grading. she's pretty much straight foward with what she expects from her students. i'd take from her again.
very sweet, clear, boring lectures, not so easy paper grader, but very easy quizzes
Don't take her. Doesn't help with papers and grades hard.
she is a nice lady- grades hard on papers- easy quizzes but they only count as 10 percent of your grade- the only other part of your grade comes from essays and they are 10 percent each as well- attendance policy..you can miss 6
Extremely hard on grades. Went for extra help and to writing lab and still couldn't get higher than a C. Don't take this course.
without a doubt she is the nicest teacher on campus, but just the opposite when it comes to grading essays. i don't see how anyone could come out of this class with an A for the semester. no notes and very little homework, but 90% of your grade is essays.
This teacher is the most boring teacher I have ever taken, ever. I went to her for help on a paper and she told me what to change. I changed it and I still got a bad grade. I don't think she knows what she is talking about.
nice teacher, stress free environment, but the b+/a doesnt seem to come with the package, just seems like no matter what i did i received a C. If you are content with a C however go for it :)
Hard to get above a C in that class! No matter how hard I try.. it's always a C. Nice lady, boring though.
sweetest lady ever. lets us out of class when you ask. grades hard though, but it will definetly improve your writing skills
so boring...found it hard to keep my eyes open and i had an afternoon class...little homework, but grades hard on papers. i wouldn't take her again.
Had her for two semesters...little homework, no notes in class...however kinda boring and hard to stay awake. She seems to pick one grade and stick to it, so if you're lucky and make a good one she'll stay with it! Let's you out early when you ask
She is a hard grader and tends to stick with the first grade she gives you. She is a nice person, but if your interpretation of poetry is different than hers, you will do poorly.
She is a very sweet lady, but the class seems to drag on forever. She lets you out early at least once per week, though. Loves lots of detail in her papers (which aren't very long) and is a strict grader, will help you out if you ask her to.
Such a nice teacher, you can tell she enjoys this subject. Very few papers, easy topics and they only average about 2 pages. No notes, little reading, and she will let you out on occasion. I love her!
Very sweet lady, but talks you to sleep during class. Easy quizzes, but grades impossible on the many many papers. If your opinion and style doesn't match hers you are in serious trouble.
I loved Mrs. Baker, she is so nice. You can tell she loves the subject. Very easy quizzes, but will talk for ages about a story. Easy, short papers, and I think she grades very fair. Can miss 5 days. Def. take this class!
TOOOOOOOOOO HAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!! william shakespeare would have failed her class. I passed but went through hell and back trying to do it. Worst class and worst semester I ever had.
She was very friendly and kind. Reading quizes are a good way to keep your average up, but she can be strict when it comes to grading papers. Keep up with reading and take notes only for the last couple of stories which are on the final; ask her she'll tell you which ones.
Great Professor. She grades hard on papers, but is helpful if you ask. She greatly improved my writing skills. I wish I could take her class again.
I had her for 2 semesters. She is the nicest lady but her class is a bore. I could not stay awake in there for anything! She grades very, very, very strict also.
She is very nice, but also VERY BORING! She spends weeks on topics that can be finished in one or two class periods. She is a difficult grader and takes FOREVER to get papers graded. SO if you like to have your paper back within a reasonable period- get a different teacher.
I took her for two semesters..first semester was okay second sucked so bad. She sticks to the same grade she gives you and its usually bad. Very hard grader. I hate her now, she is so boring. I dreaded her class and getting my papers back. Dont take her!!!!
She is not very interesting a.k.a. boring. She never lets you out early. She grades hard on papers. I went to every one of her classes read all the stories and she gave me a C. I have never gotten a C in english either.
Baker is a nice woman...but she is Boring!!! She is an impossible grader. I spent a minimum of eight hours on each paper and never got higher than a b+. Save yourself from a hellish semester and find a diffrent professor for your first college english class!!!!!!
I loved prof. baker. I thought her class was very boring but other than that it was great. she really loves the subj. and she tries to get the class involved during the discussion. the quizzes are really easy and there are no tests. She grades really strictly on the papers but if you have good ideas you will do fine.
Hardest grading English professor at CofC. Doesn't matter how great your papers are you won't get above a B. I went and visited her and rewrote my paper and still got a C. She is a very hard grader. Do not take her.
If you want to do well in this class, you HAVE to see her during her office hours.. I got a D on my first paper, and after going to see her during office hours numerous times throughout the smester, I got an A- on the final paper and a B in the class. She's a really nice lady once you get to know her, but the class seems to drag on. Daily pop quiz
She's nice, but the class is kind of boring and do not take the class at 8:00 in the morning! The homework is easy, just read and sometimes take a quiz about the stories. However, she grades papers really tough!! I did not do very well on my first essay paper! I think she is a really hard grader!
Insanely hard grader
I dread writing papers for her because she has marked every one of my papers start to finnish. She is very critical and her class is painfully boring. She really needs to go to the beach or to a comedy club to learn that life is not all about being hard. I really feel depressed after her class.
Do not challenge this conservative southern woman! She is the epitome of dry. If you put forth a solid well written paper, she will mark it. No, rather scar it with red criticism. If you take her, be prepared to hate english for the rest of your life.
The worst teacher ever.
Dr. Baker is perhaps the hardest on grades that a professor can be. She claims she will give A's but I think she gave about 2 on all the papers all semester. If you take her be resigned to the fact you will not get an A. She is more than happy read your papers prior to turning them, it can mean the difference between a B and a C
I loved prof. Baker! Do not listen to the others. I got an A+ on the last paper worth 30% of our grade and I would not consider myself an exceptional writer; however, i did work very hard on the paper. She can be boring in lecture, though. I would definitely say that her grading is fair!
I have had some great classes at the College of Charleston, but walking into Baker's english class is like walking into Dante's Inferno.Every class seems like it's 100 years long.A wolf in sheep's clothes when it comes to grading.
The sqaurest of squares.
Nice teacher. Understood that most of us didn't want to be there but had a sense of humor about it. Don't expect to get A's on essays if you don't spend much time on them. Let us miss 5 classes regardless of excuses.
Mrs.Baker is really nice and an easy grader in my opinion. Class sometimes seemed to drag on but otherwise it was an enjoyable, easy course.
GREAT PROFESSOR
Her classes do tend to drag on but i believe she is more than fair on grading papers, and always warns us ahead of time if we're going to have a test/quiz. We don't have THAT many papers to write (3-4) and we don't get a lot of hw apart from reading a short story or two, overall a good class, probably will take her for engish 102
She is a sweetheart, but so unbelievably dull and boring it made pretty much everyone in our class fall asleep at least a few times. I usually don't have trouble paying attention, but I found myself drifting off during this class. However, if you are a good writer take her because your grades are basically just essays and a few readings.
I had prof Baker for two semesters. She is easy once you get her style. Readings are assigned before every class and she gives quizzes on the majority of them. If you are a decent writer and do not mind being bored out of your mind, shes perfect.
Ppl looking for a real review look here: AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. A very nice woman who means very well, but her grading is absolutely ridiculous (admitted to only giving 4 A's my semester). She teaches with absolutely no charisma or character, and you will find yourself dreading everyday you walk in to listen to her lectures irrelevant to the grades.
If you are looking to be an english major, or even if you are just mildly interested in english. avoid this professor. she dominates lectures and is very mundane. being in her class is like verbal fill in the blanks. she talks for a while then has you say the word she was going to say. her grading is ridiculous.
Does grade papers harshly but EASY class if you do the assignments. Only 3-4 papers this course is mostly reading and quizzes. If you read the stories you'll be fine I got 100s on every quiz. If you get a grade on a paper you don't like talk to her about it and she'll tell you what to fix in order to pull up grade
If you are looking for a professor who grades on every single detail of a paper, down to the period..then take her. There's not a heavy workload, although her grading is harsh, I only know one person in my class that ever got an A on a paper. (you write 4 the whole semester) The average grade on the other students on a paper was about a C or a D...
She's a really nice person and to an extent I was interested in the content of the class but she is heinously boring unfortunately... The class mainly consists of being given reading assignments which she will then explicate to you in class, leaving no real room for discussion or analysis by the students. Workload is pretty mild.
love ms. baker. such a sweet lady. I took her for english 110 (very hard...) and chose to take her for detective fiction the next yr. awesome class. very fun. points are 100% quizzes, so if you don't read, prepare to fail miserably! read the books (which are all great) and the quizzes are on a 1st grade comprehension level. take her. I love her!
Found this class incredibly boring and repetitive. basically learn the same thing you learn in high school about analyzing, grammar, spelling etc. She just stands in front of the class and talks the whole time and nobody participates. Easy if you read the stories and put effort into the paper.
Elizabeth Baker is a very nice person although she is a very harsh grader. Make Sure you read the assigments.
Your grade is two essays, a revision essay, a research paper, and quiz average. Dr. Baker is pretty picky when grading essays, but she's always willing to look them over and give you pointers before it's due. Reading quizzes are really specific. Class is mostly discussion, can be boring but glad I had her. I'm not a very good writer but got an A-.
She expects you to be an english major with your ability to edit a paper. If you have an kind of learning disability or you do not plan to be a english major. Do your best not to take her. She is boring and grades harshly on editing abilities over content.
Baker is a good professor. While her class is a bit boring, she offers extra help on writing assignments and essays. No tests-essays only-few homework assignments-cancelled class a fair enough and never had the extra hour-final paper can reviewed by her before submission
She is a great professor. Her homework reading assignments from the textbook are interesting, insightful, and thought provoking. The essays for he class, after the first summary and analysis, are open topic (within general guidelines) so they're much more fun to right. She's incredibly fair and always willing to help anyone who needs or wants it.
She is smart and selects interesting readings. At times, however, she doesn't know how to engage students in discussion.
Interesting readings but boring class...she just talks about readings the whole time and no one talks. She gives you a prompt to write about and critiques it very harshly. She told me that I'm a very good writer then gave me a C-.
She's the most boring teacher I've ever had. Claims she doesn't like lecturing but that is all she does. Shoots down all student's ideas. Married to a guy on the Board of Trustees which explains a lot. She gave me a fine grade because I knew what I was doing (I had taken 2 AP english courses in high school) would not recommend. SO BORING
Had this at 8 in the morning. Mostly lectures and they aren't very interesting at that. I loved her as a person, she was super sweet and cares about her students. She makes her self available and helps out as much as she can. No tests, only a few papers.
Took her for an 8am class. She talks a lot during pointless lectures, but gives good feedback on papers. It's definitely not an easy A even if you have taken AP classes. I really like her and would recommend her.
Fave professor at cofc. Not especially interesting lectures but love her!!
Her lectures were very long and so boring. If she doesn't like you then she will purposefully grade you poorly on your essays. It took her 2 months to give us an essay back. no joke. If you want to get on her good side, go to office hours and participate.
Professor Baker is a lovely lady and she makes herself available for her students. I had her at 8am, three days a week and that was difficult. She is such a sweet person but her lectures are long and redundant. She takes a while to give back papers, but when she does she gives you great feedback. She's also a tough grader.
She is a nice woman but has somehow made my Detective Fiction class incredibly boring. I was very excited for this class and expected book club like discussions. Instead, she has us read stories then spends over an hour retelling the plot as a lecture. As far as grades go, the class is rather easy if you do the readings.
Took Professor Baker MWF at 8 - which was ROUGH. Her lectures are long and sometime's pointless. She's really sweet and helpful. Not a lot of work, though.
Professor Baker literally will waste your time and money. Everything we do in class has nothing to do with the course. She constantly repeats herself to the point she will keep the class past the time it ends by dragging on the same point. She is incredibly boring and it's difficult to drag myself to her class 3 days a week.
She is so caring and sweet. She mostly gives lectures and reading assignments. But she goes over everything in detail so no one gets confused. Only 4 papers during the whole semester. She does give out reading assignments from the textbook, but just talks about what we read the whole next class. The few articles we read are SO GOOD too.
If you have the opportunity to take Professor Baker, definitely do it! She's extremely kind, helpful, caring, motivating, and funny. Professor Baker teaches at a great pace and wants her students to succeed. Speeches are easy if you put forth the effort. Extra credit opportunities! Responds to emails quickly. You won't regret taking this Professor!
Baker is so easy, but incredibly boring. Class feels like it goes on for hours because all she does is lecture in the most repetitive way. She doesn't know what she's talking about because she doesn't even have a Ph.D. Papers are incredibly easy and the readings are interesting, but she is NOT!
easiest english professor. hardest part of the class is sitting through her boring lectures. doesnt really keep you for the second hour. papers are easy and she lets you rewrite one after she grades it for an additional grade. minimal class work and no homework besides 3-4 papers.
Lecture heavy. People fall asleep. She gets upset if you're not paying attention or on your phone. Hates cell phones. Not much to do in the class except for pay attention, and answer her questions so she can get done early/on time. It isn't a difficult class. Assigned readings are important for quizzes and essays. Not many essays tho.
Very helpful with feedback
Class is easy you have to read a book and do discussion posts. You also have 2 analysis to write and 2 paper. We had to write a 5-7 page paper for our final which she failed almost the whole class on. She never puts in grades till the end of the semester so you have no idea what youll get.
Professor Baker is probably the worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't put grades in so you can go from thinking you have an A all semester to her failing you at the end. She gives horrible feedback and couldn't explain to anyone why she failed them on our final papers even after fixing all of her comments before turning in our final drafts.
English 101 is way to easy to have a teacher give you a C at the end of the semester pick someone different. 100% don't recommend her for such an easy course. Defintely takes her job to seriously.
Professor Baker's lectures are terrible and she takes forever to grade your assignments (over a month sometimes). You have no idea where you stand in her class. She refuses to grade any assignment higher than a 98% and has unrealistic standards. A first year academic writing course shouldn't be like this. Avoid at all cost.
Professor Baker is a really nice woman who you can tell is very passionate about the material and detective fiction as a whole but gives really boring lectures. This class is a lot of reading (usually short stories) and there is usually either a reading quiz or a discussion post on each set of reading so make sure you understand the text.
Though she's nice classes were unbearable at times. She said that she doesn't like lecturing but that's all class ever was. Quizzes are easy if you read, and it was never that much reading. I survived but I would not take it again.
She was an okay professor but she literally lectured the whole time. She would assign us readings and then would repeat the whole thing in class for the entire hour and 15 minutes of class. If you do the readings you'll do fine on the quizzes. She gives kinda harsh feedback/grades for written assignments. She doesn't allow technology in class.
She is very passionate about english. She takes forever to grade so you really arent sure where you stand. She also takes her job very seriously however, she really cares for her students. Her class is very boring but her workload isnt too bad compared to other classes. She is very nice and understanding.
If somebody told me "take another class by Ms. Baker or drop out of school" I would never be seen on this campus again. While she is polite and cares A LOT about the courses she teaches, there is nothing more that she loves than the sound of her own voice. There were never any notes or visuals, just talking for 75 minutes with no computers allowed!
She is a lovely lady and very kind. But this personality does not show when she grades. She takes a long time to give back grades so you have no clue what your grade is for a while. When you do get grades back, she is a very tough grader and only likes it if you wrote it how she would. She also lectures the entire time - be ready to fall asleep.
This class was quite literally one of the most boring classes I have ever taken. I didn't realize it was a detective fiction class which was my first mistake especially for not being an english person. She spends the whole hour and 15 minutes talking and you are not allowed on your phones or computer. She is also a very harsh grader
I really enjoyed having Professor Baker, despite sometimes having boring lectures. Overall, she definitely improved my writing and formatting skills, and I learned some interesting things in her class as well. She is very compassionate, so don't be afraid to ask questions. Definitely participate too because it'll help your grade in the end.
I would not take this class again. grades are never in on time, and she constantly switches around the schedule and due dates, which makes it really stressful. lectures are extremely boring, and she spends entire classes on topics i've been learning since elementary school. Readings are interesting, but overall, I would not take again.
She was the sweetest women! Would always give you an extension if you asked and never overwhelmed students with work. She truly understood what it's like to be a student. Gives clear feedback on all essay drafts and gives you chance to improve them before your final grade. Lectures can get a bit boring but overall it was a very manageable class.
Her lectures were extremely boring and she takes a long time to grade, but she is very reasonable and cares about the information she's teaching. Her schedule and planning didn't make much sense and papers were not evenly distributed throughout the semester. She is a fair grader.
Professor Baker is a lovely woman and this is not a difficult class. She does take quite a long time to grade and her schedule changes often, but this class did not require lots of time and dedication to earn an A. Just show up to class, read the required material, and turn stuff in on time and you will do fine.
Ms. Baker was great! She was accessible for questions/concerns outside of class and super caring! She is quite unorganized with time management and ended up cutting an entire essay from our class curriculum. She was also very late on getting feedback back to students but was not a harsh reader by any means. Discussion participation is required.
She is a very nice person and really love English but she will talk about the things that we did for homework for the entire class and we all sit there falling asleep. The class is nothing that I haven't learned since 8th grade and she doesn't make much of an effort to enhance our learning, even as an honors class.
quite literally the most useless and boring class I have ever taken. she talks for 50 mins straight about nothing and no class engagement. she kept having random things come up like one time she claimed she went blind for a few days so she couldn't grade our papers... be prepared to get grades a month after submission
God bless her, she is so kind but her lectures had everyone falling asleep. She loves to talk! I mean, the topics and readings given are kinda interesting, but the lectures are unnecessary. She just rehashes the assigned readings. The worst part is the grading - I don't know where I stand. I just took the final and she just graded the first paper.
Ms. Baker's class is manageable if you stay on top of things. Lectures can be dry, but she's understanding and gives helpful feedback. I found unstuck AI great for essay prep - worth checking out!
Professor Baker is very nice and had several days where she held extra office hours instead of class. There were a few discussion posts and 3 essays so not many grades overall. It's very hard to stay tuned in during lectures because she tends to repeat herself or just reread the homework readings but she really appreciates participation.
Professor Baker spends her Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays lecturing a brick wall for fifty straight minutes. Good god, she is boring. I don't understand how someone could be so oblivious to the lack of attention she is receiving during her classes. It's only been three weeks, and I can't take it anymore. Take someone else if you can.
But genuinely the most bored I have ever been in class and could not wait for it to be over. The class I took was generally easy, except the essay she gave to us at the end of the year, without any essay writing prior, was graded hardly and took forever to get graded. Only take this class if you wanna be bored out of your mind.
Lots of little quizzes and short responses. All open ended and if you don't add enough detail in your answers you won't get credit. 2 major papers she failed me for one of them for “using outside sources”. never shuts up about AI swore half of my responses were AI. hates her class was impossible to stay awake.
