Very unclear lecture style.
I found the class to be somewhat unorganized and we frequently went off on tangents however Prof Brule was very helpful if you asked her questions.
I agree that she went off the topic during the lecture sometimes. However, her choice of videos for the lecture topic are excellent.
Enjoyed the casual atmosphere and conversational lectures we had in class. At times, the readings were difficult and we didn't review the major points completely so you were kinda left on your own. Making in class discussions sporadic and difficult to know how to contribute one's voice effectively.
THis professor is not responsible , always late , never be on time.
This prof is very unclear and has no set direction. She tends to go off on tangents doesn't really cover everything so there is too much nonsense reading. Only good thing was that the exam was set by the students.

By far the laziest professor everrrrrr! Never hands back assignments on time, talks about nonsense and ALWAYS late for class!!
Course Material: Good Prof: Not so good The books and readings were a much better teacher than she could be. I learned a lot, but it was on my own. Interesting and practical course though.
This Prof was excellent. She encouraged class discussion and always tried to make sure people understood concepts by providing ample examples. The content was great. She rocks.
Average Professor. Appears disinterested. Sometimes hard to distinguish between sense and nonsense and doesn't come prepared for the class. Encourages class participation though. Classes never run through full time.
she: doesn't respond to emails on time, doesn't mark papers on time, doesn't show up to class on time, wastes 30mins of classtime talking about administrative B/S that could be handled by posting it on the website, she didn't post my final mark because she said I didn't hand in the final exam which I did = DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER!!!
Hated her, she is feminist but does not disclose this fact. I am not against feminisim at all, but against hipocrits like her. She gave me a B in my first assingment sicne I was basically very pro-feminist, but I some how diverted to Masculinity and I just watched my marks drop. Watch out for this witch she is not fair at all and her son stories ar
This course was great. The lectures were always interesting and the course content excellent. The prof really tries hard to generate class discussion, sometimes to a fault, which makes for some off topic discussions. Overall, it was an eye opener the gender studies. Highly recommend.
I loved this course.
Amazing Teacher. Very down to earth.I personally didnt care if she was late at times. She goes through the final exam stuff in depth so when it comes to it you are so ready. Most of the work is in the readings. Do them and you'll do just fine.
I personally found Liz Brule to be an interesting professor. She made everything interesting and conversations with her proved to be beneficial. Firm but fair!
Overall, I would say shes a good proff! HOWEVER, she takes extremely long to mark assignments and papers (about 2 monts)...Class attendance is highly reccomended, but you should be ok if you skip a few classes here and there! Enjoy it!
Great proff. Course is really interesting, assignments require a lot of group work, but I met amazing people and had a lot of fun doing the presentation. Proff gave us tons of feed back and encouragement.
Fantastic professor! I found her to be very passionate about the course and I have no clue why people in previuos comments said she's always late and misses class? She met with me on office hours to discuss my work and I ended up kickin ass in the course! Remember folks you have to work also, not just the prof!
This was the last course I took to graduate and it was one of the best. Prof Brule is one of the best profs I have had a York. She is passionate about the course and cares about the success of her students. Highly recommended.
She is disorganized, her lectures are never clear- she goes off on stories about her son and french Canadian women. She speaks of only two main concepts constantly in all her lectures. She doesn't expand on any of the readings we have or talk about any other concepts. Her lectures are a waste of time, regurgitation and relative information.
I am taking her Women in Canada course and it is great. Her lectures are engaging, easy to follow and interesting. She is super organized and easy going. I love the course.
Her lectures are ridiculous. Repetition in "ideas", hard to find the facts. She is the epitome of stereotypical feminism. The readings are what you need to read to pass. Her lectures are terrible. She's also disorganized and hard to follow. Her jokes are lame too...
Super interesting course. The professor's lectures are really interesting and the course is easy to follow. The texts are good too. I really like the prof and the course.
Interesting course especially if you like historical content. Thought some of the texts were difficult but the prof's lectures were clear and she was fun. The assignments are fairly straight forward. Great course.
fantastic teacher!!! loved her lectures. I would love to take her other course, too bad the ones I want to take are FULL. :(
By far one of the laziest profs ever! She was NEVER in class and was very irresponsible. When she was in class, she rambled on about her kids or her personal life. Not a good prof at all!!
She's a good professor. Interesting to listen to, and funny. Class attendance isn't necessary if you do all the readings. Her lectures are fairly short because she shows a lot of films in class. The course info is dull though.
Just finished a summer course with Prof. Brule and she rocked. Lectures were interesting and fun, and the final assignment which was a presentation was great. Our group aced it, but you have to work for your grades although if you do you do well. She is always available too.
The worst! do nottttttt take this class!
Fantastic course. One of the best I have taken in years. Lectures are clear, we set our mid-term, group work is fun, and the work is well balanced. Love the prof. She is really good, nice and easy to follow, although she speaks quickly she will stop to explain anything.
I like her, think she's fun and her lectures are quite interesting! TA merene is a bit tough though :/ overall good prof
male and femal realationships. she's a good teacher for this course. she brings in great movies to watch and the readings are good. however, her organization sucks! she's late to class, and takes a long time to mark. she marked our essay proposals 1 WEEK before the final essay was due, & we didnt get the esay marks before the final.
Takes WAY too long to mark. ridiculous. over a month since i handed in the final essay and school is out and still hasn't posted the the grades for it. lectures and readings are interesting but it feels like she makes up so many facts that make no sense ie. the number of intersexed individuals is not 1/5. lol. but overall a very sweet helpful lady
Love the prof and the course!!!!
I took Activist Rhetoric this past year with Prof. Brule and it is one of the best courses I have ever taken at York. The prof is excellent; engaging, interesting and encourages her students to explore their interests. Loved it.
Great prof! Amazing lectures and great personnality. She was gréât fun!
Amazing prof, loved her lectures! Such a fun prof.
Great lecturer! She comes prepared with discussion topics and videos. Do your readings so you can participate, she does ask questions. Very encouraging. Fair marker so bare in mind this is a fourth year class. Really pushes you to achieve a good grade and consider more than the readings. Watch your grammar. I learned a lot!
One of the best courses I have taken at York. Democracy and Free speech was not only useful but it was so interesting. We had regular debates and put on a mini free speech conference at the end. Excellent course and excellent prof.
Stay away from this professor if you can. I am not joking. The class is disorganized! She doesn't explain anything but complains when she hands things back. She lets people do whatever they want during class, she engages in nonsense conversation, but expects people to respect her and know how to do her assignments. DO NOT TAKE A COURSE WITH HER.
Worst class. Doesn't teach
amazing class it was really interesting and she is super sweet!
Interesting class, terrible professor. Only cares about students who take interest in her personal life. Takes too long to hand back assignments.
A genuinely sweet lady who's funny and insightful but coming to lecture is literally such as waste of time. While the debates are interesting, they take up so much class time that hardly any concepts are covered. The readings are all you need to do and they're manageable. The exams are so easy, and she gives exactly what`s on it (key terms, essay)
She is AMAZING! One of my favourite professors! Always made the class extremely interesting and generated great conversation during lecture. Course material is very interesting, and the exam is easy if you study. She tells you what will be on the exam exactly which makes it much easier for her students to study. Amazing Professor!
Hard marker, sometimes awkward in her jokes. Class is a waste of time. Don't need to go to class just do the readings.
Took both her classes, she's better as a first year professor. In upper years she is just annoying. The not handing things back and silly jokes are no longer fun when your in your upper years. Likes to have casual conversations over teaching. Should be a radio personality not a teacher. Course was easy though. Do your readings, stay away from her.
Great course and prof. The content was excellent and class discussions/debates were great. I learned a lot.
This is an excellent course. The course is organized around debating free speech issues, so if you want spoon fed lectures this course is not for you. Prof. Brulé is great.
Stay away from this teacher. Changes assignment outlines right before they are due. Claims to provide feedback and doesn't. Gives rubrics hours before papers are due. Offers no guidance. Sample papers are useless. Classes are useless, She rants about her life. Completely ruined my GPA. Don't take her courses. Disorganized and unfair. NOT WORTH IT.
GREAT PROF. Loved this course. Best HREQ course I have taken. Thanks for a great term Prof Brule
Prof. Brule is amazing! The readings she chose were interesting, her lectures are straight to the point and very clear, and the discussion she is able to generate is very thought-provoking. If you don't do well, it will be b/c you didn't do the readings. Do them! You'll def love this class! I know I did :)
Awesome professor and very interesting course.
Great Prof, The one thing is that she doesnt return assignments on time. If you attend all the classes and pay attention its an easy course.
She is great! She is very clear-cut and gives you amazing outlines and study materials. She helps a lot if you need her and is very understanding when it comes to missed assignments or it was done wrong. She keeps her lectures entertaining and interesting and extremely well planned
She was not very helpful, I would go into her lectures many times and come out not understanding what I just learned from it because her videos take up the entire class. Hardly has anything online. There's also a lot of reading from the textbooks and all the assignments require the readings to be done. I got an A tho, but i didn't enjoy it at all.
I feel like she just wings lectures and talks about whatever she wants. Otherwise the class is just basically PC propaganda
So far, Professor Brule seems like a funny and wonderful woman. But her method of teaching is extremely hard to follow. She isn't the best speaker, she mainly reads off of a paper, and goes through it to quickly. There are also no notes that she puts during the lecture.
She had to make corrections on the WHOLE course syllabus because she mixed up about 80% of the dates She doesn't have powerpoint notes to back up what she's saying in class. She doesn't post any lecture notes on moodle. She just talks through the lecture which is scrambled. She makes alterations on assignments days before its due. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Currently taking her male and female relationship class which i heard was a good course but by her teaching methods i hate it so far. Talks to fast considering that the students have to types out key points of what she says & doesn't post any lecture notes, she just talks. Don't recommend taking this if you like having powerpoints to study off of.
I don't know what others are talking about. All her lectures for 1920 have been posted on Moodle. The lectures are interesting and engaging and she is very entertaining. The assignments are also very straight forward. I love this class.
She is very outgoing and not a monotone professor. She sometimes talks way too fast, so I recommend to ALWAYS bring your laptop. She has no powerpoint slides (which is annoying at times), however her notes that she presents in class are well-detailed. Come to class every time or else you will fail. Tutorials, however, are completely pointless.
She's not a strong lecturer. She's not clear in the message or topic she is trying to get across. Goes off topic often. Her assignments outline seem as if she makes them in less then 10 minutes, expectations are confusing. She gives the test outline before the test which is a bonus. This course is taught through her perspective of the material.
Brule is a passionate and fair professor. She is very knowledgable on the subject of free speech and human rights. What I most valued about her is that she doesn't let her own viewpoints influence her students--she lets us reach our own truths. Excellent prof.
I love Elizabeth Brule's teaching; she was openly accepting of everyone and I felt comfortable to ask questions and not be judged. I love the way she always ask for students feedback. The course has opened up my mind on all the wrong doing in society.
This course was an excellent experience which has had a profound impact on my way of thinking. It was effectively structured to encourage healthy discussions on the free speech while avoiding hostility. Elizabeth is an incredibly effective instructor, keeping an ideal balance between discussion and dissemination of ideas. Excellent course.
In my opinion, Professor Brule was definitely not one of my favourite professors. Her lectures are boring, and she does not provide you with any lecture slides or online material that was covered in class. She is incredibly unclear with her assignments, and very disorganized. I would not take another class with her.
Really confusing when she lectures, messes up or forgets what she said in regard to assignments, and the lecture was 2 hours long. Some interesting readings though, and group discussions. Overall, it's an easy course but her lecture style is irritating at times.
Prof Brule is very disorganized. She changes assignments last minute and her lectures are unclear - she doesn't seem to understand the concepts she is describing. Tutorials with my TA were much clearer. I find it disrespectful to students' time that she changed everything last minute. I would not recommend taking a class with her.
The teaching was great. Brule is an excellent lecturer with a sense of humour. She is genuinely passionate and is interesting to listen to. I would take another course with her again.
Professor bale is an amazing prof. She makes you feel accepted and comfortable. She also makes the class interesting. I highly recommend this course.
I loved Elizabeth Brule's teaching. She was openly accepting of everyone. I felt comfortable to ask questions and not judged. I loved that she always asked for students feedback. This course has opened up my mind. My only complaint is not clearly explaining concepts at times.
It's a good course. The course director is very passionate and this gets passed down to the students. The course definitely helped me open up to a new perspective on gender and sexuality. Highly recommend for gen ed credit.
Overall good professor. She is clear in her lectures. She encourages class discussions for participation. She plays videos often and brings in guest lecturers. She can be a bit of a tough grader on assignments. Readings are a must to do well on the assignments and the exam. She gave us the questions for the exam ahead of time.
Very knowledgale prof. She knows her topics very well. An expert in Indigineous Studies, and sometimes can get moody. However, very helpful to her students. If you show her you are keen to learn and ask for help she really goes out of her way to assist you.
The course material itself was very dry and outdated. Lots of boring readings that were a must because lectures were useless. She's not a very good speaker and always rambled and went on tangents that weren't related to anything. No notes/powerpoints/etc to go off of. Assignment dates and guidelines always changed. Very confusing expectations!
Great course. You shouldn't take it if you don't like history. Prof. Brule is very knowledgable and interesting. I really enjoyed her lectures.
Great Professor! Honestly got up everyday excited to attend her lecture! She was very helpful and funny and explained concepts so that you actually understand it! She answers all questions in a clear manner and her exams and tests are exactly what she teaches you! I would definitely recommend her!
An amazing professor. Honestly loved going to her lectures. She was tough at times. Basically, if she's speaking, you better keep your mouth shut or she will call you out. Super nice and always willing to help. At times was disorganized.
Prof brule is super nice and funny. I loved attending all her lectures. She tries her best to answer questions about material in the course. Her exams are exactly based off the topics you learn in class.
She doesn't seem to care too much about the course. She's often late to class and late in grading the assignment. I took this course in the S1 term so each day was critical and we didn't have TAs for the first week because she was too busy to assign them earlier. Terrible prof, would recommend anyone to take a course with her!
If you don't read the text you won't pass but they are covered in the tutorial so even if you don't understand it there are group discussions to help you. TA's notice when you participate in lectures too so you can get more marks. She has slideshows but she posts them online so you don't have to worry about writing. She plays a lot of movie's too.
I really enjoyed the first half (term:Y) The lectures were thought provoking; however most times the prof would start off with long anecdote's. The material for both the midterm/finals was voted on by students which was nice because this class has a lot of material. Group project takes up a huge grade weight & can either make/break your avg
amazing prof, kept her lectures simple and easy to understand. Told you exactly what would be on the exam. The only problem i found with this class was the t.a. She would passively give the entirety of the class b's, clearly without reading the material.
She's funny and quite a tough marker, you have to work very hard on the reading responses to get a good grade.
Love this prof. She is clear, her engaged learning assignments amazing, and lectures really interesting.
I've been able to apply what I've learned in this class to one other class and in my life, which I never expected, and it's helped me a lot. So right off the bat, this class is a GOOD class and you will learn something. My TA tho... not the best. Brule does go over each mark tho and adjusts it, but she can be hard sometimes too. Still recommend.
Tutorials mandatory because group assignments. Lots of reading, but it's interesting and if you miss a reading it doesn't impact if you'll understand the rest of the course. Accommodating when she didn't need to be especially for personal life and mental health. Cared about student wellbeing.
Professor Brule really cares about the students in her class. Her lectures were most of the time pretty interesting but sometimes were a bit dull (just like in any discipline). Overall I learned a GREAT deal from this course about Indigenous representation and resistance.
