I feel like this class if very transparent in what she wants. This class is definitely easier with Cerkez teaching. She doesn't waste time. Very straight forward and to the point. Go to class because she will have pop quizzes to check on attendance. She is very approachable and easy to go to to ask questions.
The lab for this class was definitely difficult and every lab took me upwards of 3-4 hours to complete, and Cerkez is a hard grader, but she clearly cares about what she is doing and will explain everything thoroughly and answer all your questions. It was a very work heavy lab but I learned a lot
Professor Cerkez is a good teacher. She is very straightforward and approachable. If you pay attention in class and have all the notes, you will easily pass her tests. There are some pop-quizzes so go to class.
Professor Cerkez is a very difficult professor. She clearly knows what she is talking about and will explain any material to you if you don't understand. The only bad part about taking her section is that she her test are very intensive (difficult) and also lengthy compared to the other professors. Overall her course is very difficult.
Cerkez is a very good professor who gives clear notes and is very approachable. She also tends to give out a few pop lecture quizzes, so make sure you go to class. Although she's a great professor, her tests are lengthy and harder than the material that is gone over in class, so be sure to go over textbook problems.
Solid choice for Chem 1. Her lectures are straightforward and she's very easy to understand. The exams are lecture-heavy so it's a good idea to pay attention in class, she prepares you well. Some pop quizzes here and there. She's a very organized professor and one of your best choices compared to some of the other (harder) chem professors.
She's a very good lecturer. Go to class, because she gives a few pop quizzes to check for attendance. The tests are harder than the material learned during the lecture, so make sure to read the textbook. She cares about her students & answers emails in a timely fashion.
I took my first semester Chemistry class with Dr. Cerkez. First of all, the lecture hall is 250 + people and she writes the notes on the board each and every class. It's annoying, and it's hard to see since there is no way everyone can sit up close. So if you miss one lecture, you can't get the notes unless you know someone.
Very good teacher, she writes the notes on the board so you don't have to stress thinking about what notes to take. no electronics allowed in her class so you have to handwrite notes but its not too bad. Moderate exams and the curve is pretty good. Had some pop quizzes (like 3?) for attendance purposes. Go to her office hours if you have questions!
I had her for Gen Chem 1 and 2. She is awesome. You'll have to work in chem as it is not easy, but I studied outside of class and did all the homework and finished with a B+. If you work hard you'll do well and she is very willing to help you out as long as youre doing your part. She's very fair and good at teaching material during lecture
Dr. Cerkez was such an easy professor to understand. She is very clear about lecture material, grades, what will be on the exams, and more. She is very approachable so don't be scared to go to her if you have questions. As long as you show up to class and actually review the material you'll definitely pass!
Excellent teacher. Explains all material very well. Very clear about what is needed to know for testing. Fair grader, drops some low grades.
I took her for both Chem 1031 and 1032. She's very organized and knows what she is doing. Do come to lectures because she does give out pop-quizzes. Her lecture is very easy to follow. 4 exams - drop the lowest one. Her exams is very fair.
Took her for chem 1 and 2. Amazing lectures where she gives you amazing notes. One of best chem teachers at Temple. You need to put in a lot of work to keep up though. Review the notes and do textbook problems and you will do well. Always available to explain when you are confused. Does not curve though. Still tests are fair if you put in work.
She's a good lecturer but her tests are insane and in some cases very difficult to prepare for. If you're a chemistry wizard she's pretty great, but if you're not she's okay at best.
Fair tests, fair grading, and a great teacher. If you take good notes, do practice problems, and put time into the online homework, you will do well. Her notes are very clear and concise. She is happy to see you and is eager to help in office hours. 10/10 would take again. She is the best science professor I've had at temple thus far
She cares about the class and her students. Even though the material is difficult, she does her best to make sure everyone understands.
very understanding of students but her lectures are so heavy and overwhelimg- don't think i would take again
Lab quizzes aren't that hard if you read the lab before hand. Make sure you show up on time. Tough grader on the lab reports, but leaves helpful comments. Very nice, funny. Will help you with the lab where she can. Always demonstrates new techniques before we begin.
She'll definitely make you work for it, but Professor Cerkez is really good. She excepts you to be mature and take responsibility for this class but she is hilarious and easy to talk to. Graded by 10 out of 11 lab quizzes (make sure you write a lot in lab notebook!), 7 experiments, lab notebook, and final. Work hard and you'll do well.
Shes has a great personailty , she kinda depends on her TA's a lot though so if you TA sucks it might be rough , She does give pop quizzes like 4 that are 10 pts. She gives 20 questions for Sapling (homework) , you can use the openstax textbook to study from. she gives study guides and makes her own test. Still a hard class though
Really good professor, but not worth it to take honors chem lab. Take regular chem lab with honors lecture instead. Lab reports are long and tedious. If you do the work, you can get an A, but the amount of work is not worth it for a 1 credit class.
Dr Cerkez is a really nice professor! That being said, her teaching style can be a bit confusing at times, but if you pay attention and go to class, you will be fine.
Cerkez is awesome when it comes to tech labs. Compared to other lab TA, she is the best. Grades all the labs on time and gives good feedback so you don't make the same mistake on the next lab report. She is very approachable during office hours and answers all questions.
Dr. Cerkez is the best chemistry professors at Temple. If you have a chance to take her, take her! She is super helpful during her office hours and will send you detailed e-mails before exams if you e-mail her questions. The textbook is helpful, but it is optional. She provides practice worksheets for each chapter. Her exams are hard, though.
Cerkez is a good Chemistry Professor. Lecture notes are organized and detailed so you don't have to read the book. She mainly goes over the concepts and expects you to use the homework as practice. You should have a solid understanding of math because she can go over the math problems quickly but with homework and extra practice you should be fine
Went in here to warn everyone, one of the worst profs I have encountered in my time at temple
Dr. Cerkez is a really good Chemistry professor. I took her for Gen Chem 2. The course material is hard but she does a really good job to make us understand. She does a thing called "Murkiest Topic Poll" each week that allows you to say what you were confused about and she takes the time to explain it to you. One of the best chem professors so far.
Very good at the beginning of the semester, yet tends to assign impossible challenge questions that sometimes even Chegg cannot answer. Also, towards the end of the semester, it seems that she gets lazy with her notes and does not explain any problems. She expects you to figure out how to do problems and does not work through them during lectures.
LECTURE POP QUIZZES SOMETIMES AND RECITATION QUIZZES EVERY WEEK! Take a teacher with a better curve cause her exams are hard. The first exam we got to take it home and re-do it for a better grade. She is never really available if you try to access her outside of her office hours which was annoying, but she has good notes. EXAMS ARE HARD!
Dr. Cerkez is AMAZING! Best professor I've had. She made it so easy to learn the material, and she is extremely helpful if you don't understand something. She truly cares about her students and does everything she can to help them succeed. She doesn't curve, but she's such a good teacher that you don't need it. Highly recommend taking her class.
Dr. Cerkez was for sure one of my favorite professors at Temple. She was caring and very willing to help always! She is accessible outside of class but her office hours are usually very full, so go early. Her exams are based far more on her lectures than the text book, but do both. Also, her practice exams help a LOT!
This lab is one of the hardest at Temple, but Dr. Cerkez is actually a good instructor. She doesn't lecture a ton at the beginning. She is also very helpful over email/office hours. The grading is hit or miss; you'll lose points for something you didn't even know was required. Just pay attention to her requirements and try to improve for next time.
Do not recommend taking, too much homework and challenge questions that take hours to do. Tests are nothing like the notes and youll study a week in advance to barely pass. Did not pass this class and put so much effort and work into this class. Definitely take it with someone else.
Teacher is absolutely unprofessional. Talked about students to other students, etc. uncomfortable classroom, she makes u feel stupid if u don't know the answers or ask a question. impossible to pass. exams are way too difficult. doesnt help boost averages, etc. had our grades locked up until the last day? hardest gened i ever took & i hate her
Dr. Cerkez knows a lot about chemistry and does a pretty good job explaining it. She takes notes every day rather than reading off power points. However, she was not the nicest about answering questions and made you feel kind of stupid.
DO NOT take Dr. Cerkez! I worked my butt off this semester and do not even know if I will pass because she had our grades locked the whole semester? Will not even release our final exam grades when every other class got them back immediately. She gives so much homework that takes hours to do and rushes through the material.
do not take her. took her for a gen ed chem class, and it is my lowest grade. she expects you to know everything. locks grades until the very end of the semester, which sets you up for failure. the hardest grader there is. exams are so hard and no way you can finish it all in the time she gives you. if you do not participate then u r gonna fail
Great class! Sure, if you dont want to do ANY work, dont take this class. But take it if you want to learn about interesting stuff. Totally possible to do well with reasonable effort.
Dr. Cerkez is a really tough grader. Tests are hard and you take quizzes every week. I worked my butt off still didn't pass. No curve.
Cengage HW takes too long to do (about 10 hours a week) and it was useless. The exams most of the time had questions that we didn't learn how to solve and she admitted it. Quizzes were hard too. Almost failed with a D+ but that curve made it go up to a B-. This class was torture for me. She IS a good teacher but not for me bcs I'm a slow learner.
Dr. Cerkez was very helpful to new students at Temple. I learned a lot from this class.
I LOVED this class. Prof Cerkez is great. I actually looked forward to lectures every week. That being said, exams are hard -- too short of a time for that difficult of questions. Regardless, I highly recommend, information is important and she makes chemistry accessible to anyone.
Dr. Cerkez is a great professor who was so flexible and kind during this online semester. She was understanding about late work and listened to students who were struggling. Even though it was an online lab, I still got a lot out of the class because I practiced science writing. Practice Excel before the class and dont be afraid office hours.
Horrible. Her instructions are always confusing, and she never answers or helps when I come to her office hours, she always asks back what should I do for that problem. If I know how to do, I wouldn't need her help. Her excel files are horrible, bad explanation and always makes me lost. I don't feel like she's trying to help students.
She created this lab to ensure that students do not succeed. We had two tries at each lab report and even then, they made it impossible to get good grades on them and on top of that just brushed off our pleas at changes in the course by just saying "you have another try anyways". Her TAs are even worse and do not care about you.
She is a tough grader and expect you to have knowledge on what you will be doing in lab even before the portion was covered in lecture. When asked a question she would question you back. There was so much work just one credit.
It is normal in this 1 credit class for my group and I to spend 6-10 hours a week. She has a condescending attitude, is passive aggressive, and makes the lab environment much more stressful than it should be. I feel uncomfortable asking her questions unlike my other professors. The only good thing is we can revise most assignments once.
Worst teacher. Grade is locked the entire semester, never answers emails so you better hope you dont have a class during office hours or youre screwed. You basically are teaching yourself, and all exams are application based even though she doesnt apply it to real life in class or HW. If you have no background in chem, i suggest trying a dif prof.
One of the best chem professors I've ever had. I enjoy her lectures, there's a lot of homework so it is easy to gain a lot of points. Participate in lectures for credit. There are 4 exams that are worth 5% each, they're out of 5 points. Weekly checkpoints are the majority of your grade comes from. Grades are locked up til the end of the semester.
I love her so much, she's really amazing. I've only had her for this gened, but if I ever have the possibility to take another one of her classes I definitely will. I'm really not the biggest fan of chemistry in any form, but I genuinely enjoyed this class.
I loved Professor Cerkez so much. Her class is organized in a way where it is easy to get the work done and her lectures are amazing. I thought I was going to hate this class but she is my favorite professor and I now love Chemistry. I am taking her class again next semester. It is important to be in class but she goes through how to do problems.
Dr. Cerkez is my all-time favorite professor at Temple so far. You can tell she genuinely cares for students and wants them to do well. She thoroughly explains problems in lectures, so it is beneficial to attend class in order to understand the topics. She is super organized and I am taking her next semester for Gen Chem II!
Professor Cerkez cares about her students. Honestly if you attend lectures and are understanding the questions gone over in class and doing your activity reviews you will be fine. Overall if you put in the work the class should be an easy A.
Professor Cerkez truly cares about her students. She thoroughly explains practice problems in lectures, so it is really important to attend class in order to understand the topics. Attendance is crucial when it comes to her lectures. When it comes to the test do the practice exam that is given before the test it helps a-lot. Would take her again!
Class was very assignment heavy, but the assignments were not that difficult, so if you kept up it was a relatively easy A. Professor is knowledgeable and engaging. Lectures were very informative, and if you constantly go you will do fine in the class. Professor was also very accommodating to ensure success. Would recommend.
Gen Chem 2 is not particularly difficult it is just a lot of extra studying and prep you need to do in order to achieve the grade you want in the class. During lecture the prof. goes over a variety of practice problems related to the concepts. Go to PASS sessions and office hours if you are struggling.
Her lectures are streamlined and easy to follow. Exams are hard but if you review the recitation worksheets you'll be ok for tests. There is a lot of work for this class. There are weekly preview readings and quizzes. also weekly challenge questions. Overall good professor
If you wanna an easy A/B grade for GenEd courses, do not take this class. The professor is a tough grader and her grade baseline is so equivocal. The assignments you have submitted will be re-graded regularly by her (you may get a lower grade each time even thought you did not change your submission).
Honors Gen Chem Lab is a difficult class. For the amount of work you have to do to prepare for lab, it feels like it should be worth more than 1 credit, but if you ask questions and attend her office hours, she is more than willing to push you in the right direction towards an answer. You can tell she really enjoys sharing chemistry.
Not gonna lie: Cerkez is strict and hard. She is a bit intimating because she won't really answer your question if she thinks your question is "stupid." HOWEVER, you are guaranteed to learn and pass the class if you pay attention to her lectures and practice on your own time.
You are expected to create your own procedure for the labs as homework, which would be okay if the corresponding grading and feedback was more helpful. Sometimes pre-lab assignments were graded harshly for small reasons, while other times you would receive a 100% but the procedure would not work at all in the actual lab.
Had her for gen chem 2... exams were 11% each and there are 3 the final was10%. had 14 extra credit assignments if all 14 were accepted by her it was 50 extra points... participation was graded coming to each lecture boosted me up 3%. we use perusal for mostly everything
Professor Cerkez is a really good professor when it comes to teaching. If you go to all of her lectures she clearly writes out notes and explains very well. However, she is not the nicest. Not very accommodating but when it comes to actually teaching she is very good and you will understand the material.
Before taking Dr. Cerkez for this course, I was worried about her strict grading standards. However, once I attended her office hours, I realized that she cared about her students. No doubt, CHEM 1032 is hard! If you work hard, you will get succeed! Cerkez really helped me learn study strategies. I would very much recommend her! She was awesome!
The amount of work this lab required was not worth 1 credit. We were required to create our own procedure and lab manuals which meant spending 6-9 hours on this class a week outside of the three hour class period. The midterm and final were also difficult with a harsh grading scale. Remember you can take honors chem lecture with a non honors lab!
Absolutely awful professor. I did amazing in gen chem 1 but cerkez makes it almost impossible to do well in her class. Not a good teacher for people who are not chemistry majors. She expects you to know everything and is the least understanding person I have ever met. Take any other professor besides her.
Prepare to read, study, and still get a class average of
Course load for lab is intense. Despite it being 1 credit, I have spent way more time on this than the 3 credit chem lecture. Her feedback is always condescending and even rude, almost always not helpful as well. Extremely hard grader. If you can take someone else, I would highly recommend.
I recommend taking chem with someone else. A lot of work yet so little impact on grades. Only thing that really matters is the exams and god I have no idea how she grades them. Should've taken geology and look at rocks honestly at least that would've made more sense than taking her class
She is a very strict grader and you can lose points over the smallest things, but she does have amazing lectures as long as you look over the notes and make sure to do a lot of practice problems because she makes the exams very hard.
I would recommend taking the course with another professor. Although her lectures are good, her assessments are extremely hard and most questions are unrelated to examples done in class. She is a very harsh grader and you could lose points for anything. On top of that, Professor Cerkez is probably the least understanding person I have met.
Cerkez is one of the better chemistry teachers for this class. There are plenty of grading opportunities and do the learning logs every week (it legit boosted my grade by 4 points)! The exams & quizzes can be tough, but if you practice the material, it isn't that bad. Also, she's replacing our worst exam score with the final if we do better!!
For the prelabs and data sheets her grading feels unpredictable, she expects a very specific presentation. The labs are based on work being done by researchers at Temple, so sometimes a lot of research is required to design the labs. Sometimes does not respond to emails, it's good to email or meet her in office hours to get hints about the prelab
For honors lab you have to write your own procedures and hope they are correct. During office hours she doesn't like to tell the answers and only wants to hint. Would reccommend taking regular lab and honors lecture if you want to take honors chem.
I took Dr. Cerkez in the Spring of 2023 before she implemented the new grading system. At that time, every exam was scored out of 10 (with 10 questions) and then scaled up to 100. This atrocious grading system made the class horrible, but she was not the worst lecturer and implemented a massive curve at the end. Overall, not the worst professor.
Temple's chemistry department needs better professors. This class is far too difficult because of her. Consider taking another professor to save both time and money.
Do not take this prof!!
Professor Cerkez has good lectures but that is the only positive thing I can say about her. Her tests consist of problems that are not taught in lecture so it is literally impossible to do good on them. She is not a nice person nor is she understanding. I highly recommend taking another professor because she will cause you unnecessary stress.
Do not walk, RUN away from this professor. She should not be teaching this course. Her exams are WAY too difficult for the level of this class. The other professors for this course are easier than her class and agree themselves too. She does not care about her students and will not care about you. She is condescending when asked for help. Good luck
One the absolute worst professors I have ever taken. The problems that are done in lecture do not correlate to the problems on the test whatsoever. Her tests are nearly impossible to pass, and she does not release class averages, so it is hard to determine you are the only one who did bad or if the whole class did too. I would not recommend.
I loved prof. Cerkez. Her lectures are so comprehensive and as long as you put in some extra work to understand concepts, she is amazing. Her office hours are great to go to and she offers extra credit throughout the entire semester. I don't like chem and I am not good at it, but I really enjoy going to her lectures.
She is the fairest professor I've ever had and her lectures are AMAZING. This semester the class average was an 81.5% with no curve, that's the highest I've had in any of my science classes! If you put even a small amount of work in this class, you'll do good. And she makes friendship bracelets and gives them out as prizes in class!
I had a really rough time this semester with some stuff going on in my life and Dr. Cerkez was really understanding. She let me take an exam more than a week late after a family issue and helped me get back on track. I always knew where I stood in her class and appreciated how clear she was with expectations. I'll take her again if I get to!
Really like that she doesn't use powerpoint in lecture but hand writes the notes on an ipad. This made it easy to follow along. The exams were fair, 18 questions in 50 minutes. The learning logs were something I hadn't had in other classes, raised my grade by at 5% points by the end. I learned some good study methods.
Prof. Cerkez is the best prof for Chem1032. Compared to what I've heard of other chem1032 profs, she's the most understanding and knowledgeable prof! Never got above an 85 on any of her exams and still ended with an A because she offers grade boosters. Finals are worth 10% of your grade, but learning logs are an extra 5%. Totally manageable!
She gives 5% bonus towards your entire grade. Do the weekly homework assignments and practice problems and practice exam before the exam to do well on the exams. Exams are only worth around 30% of your grade. Go to her office hours as they are extremely helpful!! She truly is nice once you get to know her.
She has really nice lectures and describes everything pretty clearly. Her office hours were helpful. The exams were really hard for me though, I really struggled even after studying a lot. She's not understanding at all though. Would have ended up with an A- if she accepted the extra cred work I couldn't turn in from tech issues with proof...
Cerkez has to be one of the worst professors I have ever had. The practice problems done in lecture have nothing to do with what is on the exams. As someone in Organic Chem 1, I would never recommend her as a professor for Gen Chem 2, as she does not teach the necessary material.
You will need to fully teach yourself all of the material for this class, and you will still not be able to do well on the exams. The exams are nearly impossible to get a perfect score on, and she won't post the average, so you won't know how everyone else in the class did. Would never recommend this prof.
Incredible professor!!! Very comprehensive lectures, a very fair amount of homework, and very kind and understanding. A rare gem in Temple's pool of STEM professors.
A good person to talk to and ask questions, Cerkez often takes many, many points of in many different categories of her Lab assignments. I often had to spend many hours dealing with the fine details of her assignments that I ended up not having enough time/mental band with to also comprehend what was going on. Again, good person, hard grader.
Well-designed course with a great professor! The syllabus is clear, the grading system is great, and there are PLENTY of helpful learning resources. Despite challenging material and scoring under 57% on all my exams, I finished with a C. Dr. Cerkez is an excellent instructor who makes tough concepts manageable.
At first I was nervous after hearing past students talk about her hard exams and her bland personality, but I enjoyed her a lot! Her lectures were very helpful and offered a lot of extra credit opportunities. She may seem a bit intimidating at first, but she's really nice and knows her stuff pretty well!
Was scared at first when I heard about her hard exams and bland personality, but I enjoyed her a lot! Lectures were very clear and offered a lot of extra credit to help your grade. She was a bit intimidating at first, but she's was really nice and knew her stuff pretty well!
Pretty good professor. Assignments are difficult and extensive at first but get manageable as you learn how to do the assignments correctly. Gave good feedback to improve grade for next lab. Grading was kind of harsh but not terrible. Be prepared to do extensive research for the labs. Course is hard, but imo was worth taking for the lab skills.
Her lectures are great, super in depth and you'll learn from her. But she has absolutely no empathy or care when it comes to any mistakes that may be made. Her assignments are extensive for little reward and even when you come to her with valid excuses about missed assignments or classes she chooses to ignore them. Nice lady, terrible professor.
The class is definitely lecture-heavy. The professor is nice, but she can be difficult to deal with when grading issues come up. If you attend regularly and complete the extra credit and activities/quizzes, you'll be fine. The exams are challenging but manageable—study and you'll pass.
Examinations are literally just try to become omnipotent by going through all of the practicing and maybe by chance, you'll know what's on the unit assessments. It would help so much more if she would give a study guide to tell us something like: do these homework questions and problems and guaranteed, you'll score decently!
not sure why there's a lot of bad reviews, Dr. Cerkez is an amazing teacher who genuinely want you to learn. She is very friendly though not accommodating for late work/class absences. Go to class and PAY ATTENTION cuz her tests are very difficult, they'll be questions on the things she only mentioned once. Lots of extra credit to make up for it.
Dr. Cerkez is a great professor and cares a lot for her students success. Her exams are a bit tricky, but if you study and practice active recall, you can do very well! She also gives great extra credit through her learning logs which can boost you a whole letter grade if you do all of them. Attend her office hours, they are also really beneficial.
Dr. Cerkez was an amazing professor and cared for her students. However, the exams were somewhat hard and were lecture heavy, so make sure to understand the content and to pay attention in lecture. Also, do plenty of practice problems to enhance the material that was taught in lecture.
