total ****... she scheduled the midterm the day after halloween and lectures in a very snooty monotone voice. AWFUL!
There's a lot of reading but it's rather interesting. Although the midterm is after or around halloween she had good reason to place the exam date there. A prof shouldnt be judge by a midterm date but the quality of work and teaching style...
great lectuerer; always stops to answer questions. great vocabulary, and up to have some fun
she is nice and answers questions, but she's kind of harsh - i mean the midterm the day after halloween - not cool. i dont think she has any fun, so doesnt want us to either.
I dont like her. She is not what a professor should be at the university level. She is more like that annoying teacher you had in middle school who stood there waiting for it to be quiet with a stern face on. her students dont seem to respect her, I know I dont. lectures are ok....nothing special
Worst kind of teacher. Snotty, boreing, arrogant, and a bad educator. She is not only a raging **** but she doesn't know her subject well. Makes a surprising number of mistakes. No matter where I sit in her class people are making fun of her.
the class is awful, and to make matters worse, so is she. I can't stand the way she talks down to her students and treats like we are in 4th grade. I am over her and this class.
She is mean in every sense of the word. Talks down to her students, assigns huge and boring amounts of reading all of which is primary sources. A midterm the day after Halloween! Plus I heard a rumor she eats babies... I'm not saying she does, im just repeating what I heard. AVOID!
****!!!
Feminist, self centered, arrogant, yet these are some of her finest qualities. She is so boring she could write her life story on a piece of confetti and still have room left for a list of her interests. Even her TA's hate her.
she just sucks. i always fall asleep in her class and she treats the students as if they are in elemntary school
Probably one of the worst professors I've had here so far. Every lecture she takes the time to remind people to stop talking, not realizaing that she could be using the time instead to be lecutring us like she's supposed to. If you like taking tests the day after Halloween, take her class.
The stories of the baby eating should be taken seriously. Durring lecture once there was a faint cry of a baby in the backround and she stopped lecture and asked if anyone else had suddeny gotten hungry. I heard she has a 200 foot restraining order at elementry school and playgrounds. BAD TEACHER!
AWFUL "Teacher"!!! Talks down to her students, reminds me very much of a hated middle school teacher (did they hire her from the local middle school?...I wonder)Midterm the day after halloween!!! useless readings, a 10 page paper! Pulls the midterm questions out of her ass! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!

This is the hardest class that I have ever taken. SHe thinks she is above everyone else just because she is the professor. And plus, she dresses and looks like a man. Do not take this class ever!!!
you're just a bunch of stupid kids and lazy asses. readings are just like stories, so easy stuff, no need to read at lenght, and overall she's an OK prof, lectures are clear
All you kids complaining about her "hard" tests haven't taken a hard test yet. I mean come on, "pyramids" was on the midterm as an ID! She knows her stuff at least, and she has some flair for teaching the class, you people just see it as SHE EATS BABIES AND DRESSES LIKE A MAN!!
She says too much "um"s. I've counted her saying 65 "um"s because her class is so boring. She should also use her time to teach rather than just waiting for us to be quiet, even though the class isn't really loud in my opinion.
most useless class ever. it should be a 5 unit class considering how much work is required. most of the work assigned is unnecessary anyways... the reader is just a waste of money and paper! and the outlines she posts online are so pointless. does she not realize that this is a lower division class?
shes a good teacher. although she quiets the class like were in HS, but the class is really easy just come every day skim thru the reader and dont read the text book everything is spelled out for u in the test. I got an A in the midterm. All u people complaining are procrastinators and idiots.
So basically the teacher was fine, but in truth the worst part of the class was my TA he was horrible, so if you take this class, try not to get Brian!
The reader is long and boring, and we have weekly homework assignments in my section. She is a good lecturer and presents the material clearly, although her slides are pointless and she does waste a lot of time for people to "quiet down." A bad class with an okay professor.
Prof was a decent lecturer and, although she said you had to do the 5 billion pages of reading, i did none of it and did ok in the class. going to lectures helps.. a lot in this class. Avoid the class if you can.
She sucks!! Bad lecturer, pointless slides, tons of reading and her midterm sucked. I would avoid her like the plaque. Oh, and if you read this prof. D quit with the shishing were not in damn highschool.
Too much reading crap. I did none and got an A. She thinks she hears people talking all the time (schizo?) and tells the class to quiet down -- a waste of time. Boo.
While she's a spaz, the class only 'seems' hard. I chose not to read basically anything except what was interesting (practically nothing) and I still managed a B in the class although I took it pass/no pass. Don't stress out all your Freshman, this is just the beginning, and it only gets worse.
Horrible lecturer, ridiculously annoying, assigns way too much reading, most of which you won't be able to relate to the material. Find another prof if you need to take this class
Ok lecturer but has many annoying traits and overloads the class with pointless reading. Also, made us take the midterm the day after halloween and refused to change her mind over this issue. Avoid this one, there are better teachers out there.
Seriously, WHO gives a midterm the day after halloween in UCSB?!?! Besides that, the class was annoying. Way too much pointless reading. If I were you, I'd avoid this teacher. Unless you're a history major or something, because Digeser DOES know her history. The class was just an annoyance.
OMG she is a horrible professor and this class is horrible. it is freakin hard and there is a lot of stupid reading. she is rude and treats her students like they are little children. choose another GE class. you have to do a lot of work for this stupid class.
AVOID THIS CLASS W/ HER. 10 page paper on the worst topic ever, SO HARD. i got a C- on it so i thought i sucked, but got A-'s on both papers in my Hist4B class. so that paper will kill you. Taking notes in lecture is frantic your hand will die. Midterm/final are IDs and Essays. dont take this class.
I know this professor has had really bad reviews but I greatly enjoyed the UD class on Late Antiquity I took w/ her. She really enjoyed the subject and gave a packed but interesting and well structured lecture. I found her v. helpful outside the classroom, she was v. flexible. Really knows her stuff. Great for UD classes.

I'm a history major and I typically like all my history classes and my professors. I'm one of those people who will find something interesting in something typically boring. BUt she made me hate history. I dreaded going to that class.
worst prof ive ever had....
All of the stuff she spent the most time on in lecture was NOT on the final. She always tries to make the midterm as close as possible to Halloween obviously because she is a miserable human being. This will be one of the worst classes you will ever take, with the worst lectures for sure. Also had a 10 page paper on a horrible and hard topic.
She is the most boring lecturer ever. I've never fallen asleep in a class so much as in this one.
Her teaching style is very clear and as long as you're there for every lecture you definitely pick up on what she's going to test you on.
I liked her teaching style, and found a lot of lectures to be somewhat interesting. Sometimes they were boring, but I think that had alot to do with the time slot (8am). Overall she is a pretty good professor. Her test are relatively easy (as long as you study, you should be fine).
8am class which I went about 4 times total in the quarter and got a B, as long as you study and go to discussion your fine. Feel bad because she puts a lot of work into her lectures but people don't seem to enjoy it a lot of reading material though.
Professor Digeser is very knowledgable, however in a large lecture class like 4A it is hard to be a good orator. She came off as being snobbish and "too smart" to deal with students. For an intro. course her essays were too long with boring topics.
Good lecturer, really knew how to pull the material together. Tests were fair; essay topics could be a little unusual. I only spoke with her once, but in my experience she was very sympathetic and helpful. I felt like reading through the textbook helped me a lot.
She is great teacher. Her lectures were clear and to the point. If it wasn't for the 8 am factor, I would have attended every class!
She's definitely one of the best lecturers in ucsb. Just go to her lectures and you won't even have to buy the textbook. Most of the important things are from the reader. I enjoyed her lectures cus they were very clear and interesting. I met her a couple times and she really nice and understanding. One of the best history classes ever =)
very hard
She wasn't that bad, but you can tell that the information you are responsible for is all written down on her outline, but she goes off of it on random tangents that there is no need for you to know. One TA substituted her class and when Digeser normally runs out of time, she got through all info in 20 min. Says "um" A LOT
Good professor, really likes Roman and Greek history. Always excited and enthusiastic even at 9AM in the morning. Class is sort of hard since you cover 5000 years of history in about 10 weeks. Like most professors don't except to fall in love with her in a 450 person lecture. Very helpful in putting materials online.
I didn't really enjoy Digeser as a lecturer, sometimes it takes her awhile to get across what's she's trying to say. The class is easy, and you do NOT need to read the book AT ALL. Make sure you throughly review all the pictures she uses in her powerpoints for the midterm and final. My TA was amazing so i got a good grade. Overall, an easy class.
Class was extremely boring and the tests focused on seemingly insignificant historical facts
Midterm had insanely hard questions. This was the only upper division history test I didn't get at least a B plus on. Then she wondered why we did so poorly (mean was low 70s) after asking obscure questions. Lectures leave much to be desired and focus too much on Byzantine court struggles and religion, she only spent 5 minutes on the Gallic War!
Nice lady. However was very academic. Pay attention in her class because she takes her tests from her lectures.
if you miss class, her powerpoints online does not help at all. totally useless.
She has very interesting information about history. She likes to keep a C average in the class.
worst teacher. hard to follow, if you miss class--the notes online does not help at all. ex: one slide showed a picture of a building with no explanation. a lot of the slides are like that. do not take this teacher.
she knows her stuff and is obviously interested in what shes teaching but the tests are extremely hard and there is pop quizzes in lecture so you have to go and pay attention. the textbook is useless, dont read it, you have to read the reader though, all questions come from it. lots of homework reading and studying. dont take if not a history major
She makes you know EVERYTHING in the class for tests and you have to do ALL of the readings. Dont buy the textbook its a waste of money. Attendance is mandatory, she gives random pop quizzes and the paper is long and you can only use the reader as a source. Avoid her
This is honestly the worst teacher I've ever had the displeasure of having at UCSB. I USED to be a history major until i took this class, the operative phrase being "used to be"...i am now looking for a new major...Poli Sci here i come!
Unless you're a history major just do the pass/no pass route. A very hard class with brainwashed TAs, and impossible tests. Despite the fact the subject matter is actually interesting, avoid this class.
She provides very good information over topics that are somewhat interesting, however the class is based on the assigned readings more than anything. You must know every detail and be able to distinguish between 30-40 sources for the tests that are essay only. NOT an easy class!
Interesting topics. WAY WAY WAY to much reading assigned. Midterm very difficult and composed of the most random questions. It's one of those classes taught like its the only class you have that quarter.
Lame. Very lame teacher with very lame TAs on a very lame subject. Do not take.
Do not take this teacher! I loved history but she makes this subject very boring and hard to follow since she talks about meaningless information and seems to skip the important and interesting stuff. She talked about rome without mentioning the colluseum. Bad teacher, tough class, read a LOT of documents textbook and they don't even help for test
EXAMS AND PAPERS REALLY HARDLY GRADED
I went to every lecture.. Waste of life. Here's what my TA even told me, "This class is for people who absolutely love history-read history everyday, and are always watching the history channel." Don't take this class. Dude. Seriously.
Textbook is useless. She tells you everything you need to know in lecture, just memorize it and repeat it on the midterm and final. She just wants you to write about her ideas.
i strongly suggest you do not buy the book. one- not relevant to the essays and exams you need to take and 2. it is a waste of time. Better to study your notes than read the book as well as study your documents! especially if you have a hard TA. my TA was a B**** and graded extremely hard and didn't enjoy being around her students. if you love hist
Do not buy the book, it is a waste of $80! If you attend lecture you have all the info you need. The midterm and final are really hard and are all essay. In order to do well on them you MUST pay attention to the themes of tge class she talks about in lecture. Also pay lots of attention to the section readings!
Digeser's class is kind of intimidating but really interesting. There's quite a bit of reading but it's all relevant and interesting. Be careful on the image ID's on the final, shes uses really obscure images from the powerpoints. The essays aren't graded too hard if you get a good T.A. Take notes on the reading, study and you should be fine.
First off, i'd like to say Prof Digeser is a really cool person. The class though was monotone. I think its hard to make political philosophy interesting but still, every time went to class (which was always) I would just zone out and copy her notes. And as for her tests, expect to study, a lot. She takes her job seriously and so will you.
Do.Not.Take.PS188. WAYYYYYYYYYYY too much reading (and tedious reading, at that!) Far too much to absorb. Prof and TAs then go over a couple sections of the hundreds of pages of reading and hope that'll suffice. It doesn't. The grading is ridiculous; every student was extremely pissed off about his/her paper and test scores
This class grows on you but lectures are really boring. The teacher is admittedly monotonous and rather reads aloud her lectures like essays some days. Dont bother with section readings but u need to read everything else but spark-notes Hobbes &Thoreau is way better Just don't be stupid and plagiarize. Overall good class
She definitely wasn't my favorite professor. The class is very loosely structured, and you don't learn as much about history as you do about how to study it as a historian- only take it if you're EXTREMELY interested. Says "uh", "um" every two seconds, talks about irrelevant things.. boring.
Lectures are completely disorganized and half the time she doesn't even know whats going on. Documents that come with the class are completely irrelevant. I'm a history major but I hated this class.
Awesome professor. Knows what she's talking about. LOVED the class.
Professor Digeser pulls you into the subject and really challenges you to decide for yourself what you believe. We read Polybius which was tough, but she was always open to discussing during office hours or through emails (replies promptly) anything that hadn't made sense in lecture. She cares not only about her subject but also her students.
Fell asleep in every lecture. Very boring and hard to follow. She had us do assigned seating in Campbell hall, which was annoying. Lots of reading. She is good about asking if anyone has questions though.
If you pay attention in lecture and skim the readings and you should do fine. Her office hours are really helpful and she is always willing to clarify, even for tests and the essay. Take advantage of office hours!
Lectures can be a little lengthy but if you're into history they aren't too bad (and can be quite interesting!). But make sure, and this is important, that you DO NOT MISS A LECTURE. She gives pop quizzes sometimes and the mid-term and final are based on her lectures, not as much on textbook. Generally, it's an easy class, just do the work for it.
I really liked Dr. Digeser and enjoyed taking History 2A. She's a great lecturer and her lectures were very interesting , although if you don't do the assigned readings from the textbook and the primary sources you may be confused. If you put in the effort (do the readings and attend lectures) you'll be able to get a good grade.
She's passionate. It's more of a study of history as a discipline. You learn how historians look at the past and use it to theorize what we know as "history" today. Lectures a good but can sometimes get boring; she's kind of monotonous. Hard 1800 word paper where the prompt is only pictures. Get ready to read more than you ever have.
She gets really into her lectures so yo don't really get bored when listening to her.
Both the lecture and the book are important to understanding the class. Without one theres no way I'd pass
Going in to class you may fall asleep, especially if the class was 75 minutes. Was not the worse class I've had here but you have to be able to listen well and take notes in order to succeed
Lacks mastery of the subject matter involved in 2A. Therefore, she often "ums" and "errs" during lecture as she reads off the slides--which are themselves sparing in information. She's nice, but doesn't have many insights into the subject, which leaves the class lectures with a boring and vapid tone. She might be better in other classes, not sure.
Prof. Digeser is a very friendly person and really helps you out if you need it. The presentation slides do not help much, so it's really important to actually show up to lecture where she verbally gives majority of the information. Since the tests are essays, the overwhelming details given aren't so bad because you only need to know main ideas.
Took her for an Honors Seminar. Pretty difficult, but it was a class that focused on her own research work, so she knew a lot and was very helpful. I guess many take her for History classes, like 2A. She focuses on Roman history, so 2A isn't her expertise. She expects a lot of students but also really cares.
Excellent Professor. Definitely take if you are interested in studying the ancient world. Took as a history major but would have been excellent for anyone taking as a GE. She was always at office hours and extremely willing to answer any questions during class.
She's super sweet and my TA was an ANGEL and an easy grader. One or two short weekly readings. If you go to lecture you don't need to buy the textbook, she discusses everything. No exams, only two papers. Really liked her lectures and this class in general, which is saying something because I hate history.
She's not awful, she's just boring. Luckily, the class content is pretty interesting if you're into history. Her lectures seem to drag on for hours because she's monotone, but my TA made everything incredibly fun and easy.
This is the meanest professor I have ever seen. She reported me as plagiarism to the school for just one sentence (20 words) of misquote. Although the school finally dismissed the accusation, she still gave my midterm paper 0 points. Don't take this professor's class if you don't want to waste two weeks trying to prove your innocence.
She reported me as plagiarism to the school for just one sentence (20 words) of misquote. Although the school dismissed the allegation and stated that my behavior did not involve plagiarism, she still gave my midterm paper 0 points. Don't take this professor's class if you don't want to waste two weeks trying to prove your innocence.
I really enjoyed Professor Digeser! She is cleary an expert in her field and her lectures are fun and engaging. I felt that the class was extremely easy, seeing that it is a GE. If you have a general understanding of how to write an academic essay, you will get an A. If you're at all interested in Roman history and want an easy A, take this class!
The professor was really nice and understanding, but her TAs made this class seem really hard and were harsh graders when it comes to the project. I did find tons of things that I leraned in this class quite interesting, so I think it would be a really fun class if you get good TAs.
Manages to make super interesting content boring as hell. Insists on printing out readers and assignments seemingly for no reason other than an unwillingness to learn how to use online resources. Class is arbitrarily complicated when it could be simple and fascinating. Requires HANDWRITTEN notes from lecture. Terrible professor.
so boring
I personally gave up on the reading entirely because it was not helping me understand anything. The professor is very kind. I've asked some "dumb" questions during lecture, but she has never seemed condescending or frustrated. She always makes an effort to make sure her students feel understood.
I like the lectures but I like history so I can see how people taking this for a GE could be bored. She always answers questions during the lectures really thoroughly and politely without making you feel dumb. I get the handwritten notes, but her emphasis on physical copies in other areas gets annoying. Sections are fine but don't add much
The professor is kind and is clearly very knowledgable but her class was very difficult. Lectures are boring and very hard to follow in my opinion.
This is not the best designed course (sections are awful) but lectures are well done. If you pay attention you should have a good idea of what will be on the exams but expectations are still confusing. There is a project where you have to write an essay on ChatGPT, but I expect that they'll get rid of it after receiving course feedback.
Her slides were so disorganized and it didn't even have any relevance to the paper which made up 35% of our grade. She pretty much only puts names of historical figures and dates, but important information is based off a script she reads out loud instead of on her slides. There is a midterm, project, and final. PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Everything is on paper so you need frequent printer access and all notes must be taken on paper and turned in. Kind of have to go to lecture because you have to turn in notes each week and the slides only have some information. TA literally makes your grade it varies so much based on who you have. Lectures are boring and seem like hours long.
Unexpectedly a lot of work for a class that most people take as a GE. This prof makes you buy an 11-page reader for $5--seems like a waste of paper. The class is graded on participation, the final and midterm in-class essays, and a project. The TAs and professor graded the final and midterm harshly, and the lectures were boring.
Not necessarily hard but very lecture-heavy. The content was interesting, but the lectures were a bit hard to follow. Her slides don't have much information so you really have to pay attention to what she's saying, which is challenging to keep up with notes while she's talking. You can do well without reading the textbook if you take good notes.
Professor Digeser seems very passionate about the material she teaches. She was very well-spoken, although I felt that sometimes her lectures were a bit boring since her slides were pretty vague. To do well in this class, do the readings. Having the textbook as an extra source for your papers and discussions will help you succeed.
if you dont have to take this class DO NOT take it. i respect her as she is passionate about her work but the TA's are tough graders and is so lecture heavy. i went to every single one and still didnt get atleast a B. SO much reading too, even my TA told us he had trouble keeping up. please dont take unless you actually need to.
Digeser wasn't the best professor, but she was pretty iconic. Her slides were unorganized, and she makes you take notes by hand, but the content was interesting. She assigned long readings from a textbook, but I still understood the content without doing the readings. If you don't mind taking hand-written notes, then this class isn't too bad.
Really interesting lecturer. Yes there is a lot of reading but it's interesting and she elaborates on the reading in lecture. Says she gives "pop quizzes" in order to encourage you are actually reading, but she often just hints and nudges when there will be a quiz. Midterm and final are essays, quizzes are easy if you do the reading.
Lots of reading that we were supposed to be quizzed on and we were only quizzed twice. The class was composed of a research paper, essay midterm, essay final, and 2 (supposed to be 8) quizzes. She is accommodating, responds to emails quickly, and her lectures are well structured.
Professor Digeser's class was a mixed bag - the content was interesting but the rigid structure and heavy workload made it a slog. Luckily, unstuck ai and ChatGPT helped me stay on top of the readings and essays.
