She's okay...not great, but not too bad
I really enjoyed her Micro class, I learned alot that can be used in other class
SHE is very smart, has a problem getting it across, skims material w/o explaining
She is not very nice
She is very helpful and is approachable. At first might seem a little bit out of there because she is younger, but as a whole, she is great teacher.
She does tend to skim sometimes. But she wants the class to do well though and was working with new class material. Just do the reading/work and don't forget to study if you want to do well. She's good overall if you can ignore her minor bad qualities.
Bad teacher...tells you something is going ot be on the test and that something will end up NOT being on the test
Emmert is a bad teacher. She is very unclear. She says things will be on the test and they never end up on it. Her tests are very hard.
Not too bad of a teacher. Really nice. the class itself isn't easy. It will help you decide if you really wanna be a bio major. Some prior knowledge is helpful, but not neccissary
class is not too bad, lecture test are hard though, she has fill in the blank with no word bank, and she has discussion postings on webct that are pointless, the class was ok.
she expects you know everything she said.. so many pages and pages of notes!! there's fill in the blank - no word bank!! exams are hard as anything! you study as much as you can and come to the test and find out the things you studied aren't THERE!!
She had a rough first semester, but everyone who has her now says they are doing just fine.
bit**, unreasonably hard to approach. She is just as bad in lab.
I just don't understand why she gets such a bad rep. I think that she is a great teacher. Her lectures are very clear. And I think she is extremely approachable and helpful whenever you have questions. I would recommend her to anyone.
amazingly terrible teacher, she admitted to me that she views herself as a gatekeeper into the biology department, and she sees it as her job to keep the undesirables out. Not helpful and purposfully confusing. She took an interesting class and made it the most boring ever. Never take this teacher.
Tests in this class are hard! Don't go in expecting an A.
If you have a choice, don't take her! She is so blah and makes Micro more complicated than she should. She teaches as though you already know the subject. You will have to take notes and be very organized, so that you can figure out that damn unknown. Help yourself and take Pollock!
I hated her, she had no personality!!!! The subject isnt that hard but something about her test were extreamly hard! DONT take her if you can help ot!
She has no personality and her tests are really hard, she is not a good teacher!! Don't take her!!
Very confusing, monotone, and unresponsive. Take micro with pollock.
horrible horrible horrible. so confusing and doesn't teach well. doesn't give a study guide or anything. bust ur butt to do well and study for hours and do horrible on the tests. take pollock, take anyone, they've got to be better than emmert!!!!! save yourself.
Dr. Emmert is a good teacher. She is very approachable and extremely helpful, students problems with her are because they dont know how to approach her. Her test are a little hard but the class is interesting and she is always willing to help. She made me want to change my major to bio.
Awful teacher, tests are extremely difficult and you have no clue what will be on it. She gives a lot of info that you will never need. Boring and montone. Usually looks confused and stares off blankly.
she's an ok teacher, tries to answer any questions you have, although sometimes she doesn't understand why you're asking them. just do the homework and you'll be fine. I didn't think the tests were THAT hard, just understand the material when she presents it in class.
Dr. Emmert is a good teacher and her class is intresting, she is not approachable or helpful. She will tell you that she cant help you with something because you should already know. Her test are Crazy hard, and the questions ask for the craziest details.
She's not as bad as people say! You just have to work hard. If you hand in all your assignments and study for tests, you should do relatively well. Doing well in lab (which is pretty easy) will help bring up your grade.
Absolute worst, most boring, unattractive, miserable, terrible teacher I've ever had. Her tests are insanely detailed that most professors couldn't pass. No study guides, let me add again questions on test are insanely, un neccesarly detailed, professor Emmert you suck!!!
Dr. Emmert is an outstanding professor. She is very detailed and in return expects her students to recall a lot of information. However, you always know what you need to know for her tests. I recieved a 67/70 on her first test because I did as she said and studied what she discussed in lecture. She is very knowledgeable and interesting.
Her voice!!!!! It is so monotone and boring. She is the absolute worst professor that I have ever had. I think that she takes pride in seeing students fail. Her exams are extremely hard and she does not care if you do well in the class. I tihnk that she needs to re-evaluate her teaching style and then come back and re-attempt her teaching career.
I had Dr. Emmert for a few classes and I appreciated her as a teacher. You just can't be afraid to talk to her and you have to study.
She has no personality. Shows no emmotions. Terrible teacher. Tests are really hard and doesnt care about you learning, wont help either. Do not take her, you have been warned!
redefines the definition of worlds worst teacher. If you go to her for help she will not do a darn thing. Tends to grade biased as well, so try to get on her good side or your screwed! GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN, SHE ENJOYS SEEING STUDENTS FAIL
I agree with the previous post. Dr. Emmert enjoys seeing patients fail. I had a 89.4% in the class and any other prof. would have rounded to an A, especially since I went to EVERY class. But no, she is on a high horse and needs to be taken down a notch. DONT TAKE EMMERT!!! Take Pollock!!!!!!! Seriously for your own good, don't take her!
2 words... TAKE POLLOCK!!!!
I have no idea what the other raters are talking about. I thought Emmert was great. She's very clear, a good lecturer, and she doesn't hold you responsible for stuff in the text on exams. Also, she has lab exams that are pretty easy. Word of advice: STUDY. If you don't, don't expect to do well.
Emmert is a great teacher, she is very clear on what is going to be on the test, nothing thats not in your notes. She always brings up life situations that deal with the class and makes it interesting. Students need to get over the fact that you do need to study in college.
Fairly good teacher. Take a couple pages of notes everyday in lecture, tests are from the notes know them very well and you'll get an A. Also she is clear on lab assignments, lab was enjoyable at times.
You know Emmert is a hard professor but what class in college isn't hard?! I think that people need to stop whining. I have her for an upper-level class and she has me thinking in different ways and learning some really cool stuff. She's also got a great personality, if you take the time to get to know her.
good professor. all the lab exams are easy just remember the questions. exams are simple study what she says. i wouldnt expect an engaging conversation with her, though. she was very clear you just have to study. i wish she would open up to students a little more though; she seems like a nice person.
micro wasn't a bad class. she's a good teacher, and she's extremely knowledgeable about what she teaches, she might be too smart for salisbury though.
very unapproachable; not very helpful
Dr. Emmert is a fabulous professor! Her class is hard and the material itself can be tough to grasp but she explains it in such a way that really helps students understand. And for those who say she has no personality have obviously not taken the time to get to know her. She cares about her students and wants to see them suceed.
Would not recommend her as a professor. She is the most unapproachable teacher I have ever known. However, her tests come straight from her notes. I know this because I once read about 4 chapters covered on the test. To make a long story short, only about 1% of the info in the book is on there.
Horrible teacher she's so hard to understand and very unapproachable! Her tests are really hard and I studied really hard for all of them and still got d's
She is a really nice lady, but her tests are extremely hard. If you don't have a photographic memory, don't take her. You hardly use the book at all, so you really need to take good notes in class and memorize them.
My favorite teacher. She made the subject really interesting and the labs were fun. I recommend this class to anyone.
I liked Dr. Emmert! She wasnt very sociable, but still a very nice lady =) She's very approachable. She was cut and dry with exams and quizzes. Exams came directly from notes. She was willing to help although i dont think anyone took her up on her offers. Very good at explaining things, and id def wanna take her for my upper level bio courses
Nice enough teacher during lecture, but when getting extra help she can be quite unapproachable. Makes Micro interesting by relating it to every day life. Only use book for online quizzes, not tests. Everything in notes is on tests, very detailed!
Thought Dr. Emmert's class was awesome. Class is spent more time in the lab than in lecture. Don't worry about reading the book--all lecture questions come from notes. Exams can be difficult but study ahead of time. Had D's in the beginning of her lecture exams and by the end of the semester had A's. Would recommend!
Completely unorganized, no notes online, does not provide any guidance on topics to study, more confusion was created by going to office hours. chooses broad topics and lists random uncorrelated facts as they come to her with no notes to follow or slides with words, just figures from your book that YOU will be using to TEACH YOURSELF the course ugh
Dr. Emmert is a pretty good teacher. Tests come straight from the notes. Write down everything she says. Study your notes well and you should be fine. Her tests are fair, as is her grading. Would take again
She's an okay teacher, but outside of class can be really mean. Not a nice person at all.
Dr. Emmert is one of those professors that emphasizes that you have to work hard for good grades in college, it's not high school anymore. She is very clear. The exams are ...straight from lecture notes, and lab exams are ... from lab experiences. Not exactly the most approachable outside of class, but class is not overly difficult if you study
HORRIBLE!!!! She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She is so boring and expects to to study every sentence off of the 15 oages of notes you took for one exam. She is so unclear, unorganized, unhappy, and unapproachable woman I have ever seen. The WORST!!!!!
Loved the class and LOVE Dr Emmert. Exams require you to really know the material, but that's the point! I learned a great deal in the class and highly recommend Dr Emmert and BIOL333. I found her to be approachable and helpful outside of class, both in her office and by email.
I only had her for lecture. Her notes and lectures make sense but her exams ask questions that arent the main idea of the exam material which is frustrating.
I dont know why people didn't like this class. I LOVED it. Dr. Emmert is shy but if you talked to her she is so nice! I had her for lab and lecture and loved both classes. I would definitely take her. The tests aren't bad if you study, just like any other class. Great class though.
Not alot of points available in the class. Many classmates of mine expected A's and got C's. However, she was extremely knowledgeable and its an interesting class. If your a good student you'll do fine. I learned a bunch and got an A :)
Really interesting class and material but honestly she is not a fair grader at all. Takes points off for misspelling hard bio terms. If your short answers arnt exactly how she wants them you get no partial credit at all for the other correct and relevant info you did take the time to write. Don't take the class if she's teaching it.
Micro is an interesting course - I think she made it a little boring though. I got a solid B in the class, her exams are definitely challenging though. I would have EVERY detail memorized of her 20 page long (front and back) lecture notes, but still get about an 83% or 84% on every exam. She definitely seems nice though, just very challenging. Dont be scared to take her, just be ready to work
I thought that this was a really good class. There wasn't that much information on each test, and the tests were easy if you read over your notes a few times. The short answers on the end of tests were pretty darn hard though! She may not be as easy as pollock, but hey, I know I learned more and that's what college is about.
Dr.Emmert isn't bad as people described her! Her exams are pretty straight forward. If you study your notes you should be fine! I recommend anyone taking Microbiology
I thought her tests were impossible. They were way too specific and I studies to learn he material, not to memorize facts, which is what her tests were. I enjoyed lab and though it was easier but I didn't have her. I would not recommend her if you plan on having any kind of life this semester.
You will have to work for your A, but it is definitely possible. Very fair and very helpful if you go to her with questions. Just pay attention, do your work, study, and ask questions if you're confused. SHE WILL HELP YOU!
I found this course difficult, it was a teach yourself basically. Every week you have a study guide you must fill out with lots of online work, then in class you do labs. Tests have random questions that don't seem to have the big concepts in mind, asked to make sure you watch the online videos. You will work for your grade.
She isn't the greatest teacher. It's possible to get an A in her class but it's hard to because he test are ridiculous. If you prefer a teacher with very detailed notes and PowerPoint's then don't take her. This is my first biology class that I will not get an A in and that saying a lot. I wouldn't recommend her.
Dr. Emmert was my research mentor and she truly is passionate about microbiology! I had her for environmental microbiology and immunology too, and even though the classes and material were difficult, I learned a lot more than I did from my easier classes at SU. I highly recommend her classes to students who want to KNOW the material.
Upper level biology class so don't think it'll be an easy A. Emmert is fantastic though. Lab is pretty easy and straightforward, weekly textbook worksheets which are decent, exams come STRAIGHT from the notes. Really understand the material and it'll be no problem doing well in this class. I learned a great deal from her, I highly recommend her!
Dr. Emmert is a very monotone teacher but she only goes over the broad topic that will be on the test. Her exams are straight from the notes and packets you get so just study those. The class doesn't go into that much detail, she just wants to get the main idea. Mostly memorization. Definitely recommend taking her for an easy A or B.
found the lectures to be extremely dry and long. her tests i found were extremely difficult because she only bases it off of what she writes on the board. her final exam as god awful. she gives you an exam 4 on the most recent material you learned and a cumulative final all in one sitting.
Dr. Emmert in my opinion teaches very straightforward. She does not have lecture slides, everything is on the board so taking good notes is ESSENTIAL to passing. Lecture was dry and long. My fellow peers were not too fond of her. She can be a little bit of a harsh grader. Her test were short and from the notes. I recommend Pollock but Emmert is ok!
Amazing teacher! MUST TAKE!!!! By far one oft he best teachers in the dep't.
Like everyone says, long and dry lectures. Mediocre presentation skills. She is very organized and planned a detailed semester long schedule. The biology course was hard but it is not her fault because it was the education standard system.
Professor Emmert wasn't too bad; can be a bit of a petty grader at times but she as a person is pretty chill and funny once you get her to open up to your class. I had her for lab too and her lab exams were difficult. You have to study everything from the labs. Her lecture exams are right from the study guides. She's the best choice for micro.
Heres how the class goes, you do a 3-4 page study guide for each class. She rarely lectures, and when she does you dont learn anything because shes so dry. Almost every class you do groupwork based off the study guide you did. I can say that I didnt learn one thing from her teaching, you do it all yourself. Exams are kinda tough.
She is very unapproachable. She assumes everyone knows what she is talking about. Its a hybrid course, so the lecture you get points for the day (only if she does clicker questions and those are random) but most of the work and material you are learning outside class yourself. When you teach yourself you do a quiz after even if you're confused
Most of her questions on quizzes and exams come straight of the study guide. For microbiology she has online quizzes and master microbiology which some professor at Salisbury don't have!!!She is very helpful during office hours. She will answer any questions you have! I would highly recommend her!!!!
She teaches a flipped class, she will give you study guide and the textbook you will have to read, fill out the study guide, do online homework and take a online quiz before EVERY class. in lecture she goes over study guide and clicker question. don't expect to get any test back! if you can't teach yourself don't take her she has no real lecture!
Her personality is very dry/dull but as a professor she's not terrible. She's helpful in office hours. For homework you complete a 3-4 pg study guide, do masteringmicrobiology homework, and then take a quiz before even learning on the material in class. Study the study guides/make quizlets for the exams. Exams are straight from the study guides.
Gives so many assignments that in total are worth so little for your grade, including the big group project. She assigns tons of group work. Be ready to learn the material on your own, but she gives follow along study guides that are really helpful. She is very particular on grading and tests are mostly fill-in-the-blank.
Dr. Emmert is a nice person, but she is a very dry professor. I took her in the Fall and she made microbiology so boring. I felt like I was just cramming in information before each exam, but not learning anything. In the spring, I took the same course at Wor-Wic Community College -- IT WAS AWESOME! Prof Coll made the difference, even with COVID-19.
She seems to be a nice person and I like the way the course is set up but it could be better. We are basically teaching ourselves everything and the exams are tough. She says that we only need to know the material from the study guides yet includes a bunch of other material on the exam! I would recommend taking someone else for this course.
Do not take Dr.Emmert. She is a very nice person but her class is so difficult. She does a flipped class so you basically teach yourself. Know one knows what is going on in the class. Study guides, quiz, and mastering is very easy but barley counts toward grade and does not prepare you for the exams at all. Exams are all short answer questions.
If she was not the only micro class, I would say do not take her. She uses a flipped course which is just a lazy excuse not to teach bc even the lectures do not give much information so Be prepared to teach yourself. The entire grade is mostly based on the exams. She is not flexible about grades and does not really care about her students
She reaches flipped style but her lectures dont help you learn. You complete study guides twice a week, with 2 other online assignment. So teaching yourself with a lot of work. The exams are hard and she does not curve.
Flipped teaching so you teach yourself with 2 study guides every week. Exams are all short answer and worth majority of grade, if you memorize the study guides (takes a few hours) that the exam is on you'll pass. Claims exams will only be what's on SG but she does include other stuff too. HW barely counts towards grade. Doesn't really teach.
Dr. Emmert is a wonderful person, but the flipped classroom teaching does not work. I studied 6-8 hours weekly completing lectures and study guides, and asking (sometimes answered) questions, just to get Cs and below on almost every short answer exam. The course was rough. Do yourself a favor and take micro at Worwic with Prof Coll, shes the best.
Dr.Emmert is a nice person, but as a teacher she does not help much with learning. Her lectures lack content and the group work is graded harshly. You will have to teach yourself a lot of the stuff throughout the year. The exams are weighted really heavily as well. Look at what the study guide says to study, but also look at any articles from class
Overall not a bad teacher. If you do the study guides and take notes on the mastering HW your clicker grade will be fine. GO TO SI; They help with understanding what exactly we need to know for each topic.
Clicker questions are graded but every question is about the weekly study guides which aren't. She always says "here's a good way to think about it" followed by straight up nonsense, but she'll never properly explain what she's talking about. It's a lecture but she tries to make it a flipped class. Not a good teacher at all.
I would not take her unless you have too. I had her for both lecture and lab and while she is better in lab, her lecture was not very beneficial. She would just read off slides and not much else. Her classes are veryyyy exam heavy.
This class was not awful but the lectures were so boring. She grades by clicker points which you have to be present for to receive credit for. This and exams and small homework assignments and lab are the only grades. Overall, not bad but the class was boring to me.
A little rude when you ask questions she thinks you should know the answer to, never smiles, relatively boring, the class was pretty much online but required to attend class.
This class is lecture heavy. Little details that she barely mentions will likely show up on the exam. If you do the readings, homework, and go to SI, you should be fine. Just make sure to take detailed notes while you are in class.
I withdrew from BIO211 after experiencing Dr. Emmert. She will go over directions for the lab for over an hour and have students rush through all labs. I felt uncomfortable asking questions to her because she would respond with a condescending, rude tone. Her tests are hard and the grading is incredibly unparallel to actual performance.
I took this class over winter break so she may have taught us differently than a normal semester because our class was only 3 weeks but I really liked her. The way she lectures is very easy to understand and I found the topics very interesting. Although I will say sometimes I think she just takes off points for fun, shes not as bad as everyone says
The class is lecture-heavy, but if you stay on top of the readings, homework, and utilize resources like Unstuckstudy and SI sessions, you can succeed. Just be prepared to take detailed notes during class and study the specific details mentioned.
Dr. Emmert does not teach. She gives powerpoints with very vague details and expects you to know everything by the exam. I went to her office hours and she would not answer my questions because she claimed it was all on the powerpoints. During lectures she does not give details on anything we need to know and wastes time with useless activities.
This class is taught completely different than other intro level biology classes (201 & 202) at SU. Exams are very difficult and there will be questions about niche topics that she mentioned one time in class. Everything is graded for accuracy and is heavily critiqued. Lab is half of your total grade, the only way you can get a decent grade.
The reviews on here are not true. She may not be the best lecturer because she doesn't provide much information, but what she does provide is exactly what is on the exam. She makes everything easy to understand, and the exams are not hard as long as you review the powerpoints and notes. Pay attention, study, go to class, and you'll do fine.
These reviews had me really scared to take her but I find them to be dramatic. The class is tough and you need to take advantage of resources like tutoring here at SU. She was not a bad teacher by any means and she is very smart. The class is set up like reversed learning. Her exams are tough but she tells you exactly what's on them. She's alright!
She was a very difficult professor and was not helpful when going to her for help. She is also not very understanding or caring for her students. For the whole class to have such a low average test score is also amazing to me.
