This class was terrible. I would NEVER take a class with her again, a HUGE waste of time!
Galaway blows, she's retarded and makes the class feel like your back in high school. She teaches us the most obvious things.
She is HORRIBLE. The class is only hard because it is boring and her expectations change from day to day. Do NOT ever take a class with her unless you want to waste your time. She is boring and obviously has nothing to offer.
Galway is the best english prof at the UofL. Class discussions are really good and she's wicked hot. Take her classes!
She is a very frustrating prof. Her expectations change daily, and her lectures are boring. She patronizes students, and teaches the obvious aspects of a text. Don't waste your time!
This class was really interesting....UNTIL Galway walked into the room. Not only does she mark essays based on what she believes should be the answer, but she will never budge on a mark. This is a stupid waste of time, and she ruins the course!

People say that she's really boring, but I don't think so at all! She knows the concept and really emphasizes it. Fair marker, won't rip you apart like some are saying. Midterm was easy, as long as you attend class and study, the tests are a breeze!
Tends to state the obvious. No shortage on class discussion, which is good, but she fails to add anything useful herself to it. Horrible essay marker; tends to contradict herself or misses the obvious on papers. unless you have a real interest in children's lit, it may not be worth your time.
She gives nothing to her lectures. She only repeats what she reads in articles. When you do say something in a discussion, she doesn't know what to do with it and doesn't acknowledge your point. She doesn't make time to help you if you are not available during her office hours. Terrible marker.
Great class and prof, class discussions excellent, very knowledgable about subject
Galway doesn't make the class too difficult. Perfect if you're just picking up an arts credit. The class discussion is reminiscent of high school english which isn't always a bad thing. She doesn't force participation like some others. Fair marker and overall easy teacher.
I dropped this course with Galway because it was a WASTE OF MONEY!! She contributes nothing, discourages class participation by refusing to allow any acknowledgement of positive insight, and teaches by reading one chapter ahead of the class. Does this woman smile?!
I learned more from my grade seven language arts class than I did in Galway's petty excuse for a University level course. Not only does she express the most painfully obvious ideas, when someone in class makes a unique point she seems to take it as an insult to her intelligence - and rightly so!
I think she has the potential to be a great teacher but is not quite there yet. She knows her subject matter, but often needs to delve deeper into text, and allow 4 other interpretations. Class would be more interesting if she smiled more and showed enthusiasm for what she was teaching.
I found the 2000 level course very easy. The third year course was more challenging, good class discussion and alternative views encouraged. Good and helpful insights on papers.
pretty standard - interesting course, not very interesting lectures
she is soooo dull! i think i saw her smile once, she has no enthusiasm at all. She is very knowledgeable but does not know what todo when someone else is also very knowledgeable. She encourages discussion but never adds anything or says if teh student is on the right track. The only thing i learnt from this class is what my classmates thought.
Very dull lectures. She encourages class participation but then doesn't contribute anything herself. Tests are good for easy marks if you can stand the incredibly dull lectures.
Boring class. Sit and listen to what other students think of literature. Final was very hard and her marking doesn't seem to stay very consistent.
the books are interesting and shes helpful with your essays if you talk to her outside class.
Galaway's great! Take her classes if u can.
Classes are very dull. Marking is unfair and inconsistent. Very random and obscure questions asked on tests. Terrible prof.
How could someone make children's literature so boring! The lectures were dull but her tests were a breeze. Watch out for the essays, dumb topics, and she marks super hard then won't make time to discuss what mark she gave you. I suggest another Prof!
you'd think in a university english class that a students creative opinion on a text would be what the teacher hopes to achieve but no. not in galway's class. if you think anything different than what she does, your wrong. plain and simple and if you come up with something abstract and original expect silence followed by a look of confusion.
Lectures were very discussion based. Didnt ever make very clear and definitive statements in discussions. It was very hard to know exactly what you were supposed to be taking out of the course. Tests were not too bad, but had some obscure and suprising details. Essay topics were very vague and she mars hard. Good class but get ready to work!!!
hard marker, doesnt explain what you did wrong, unapproachable. she crushed my dreams big time. shes probly ok as a person but not a teacher.
She listens to what you have to say in discussion and the books taught are great.
Love her! Taken a couple of classes with Galway. Always interesting. Tough, but fair.
SHE IS A ****, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She never smiles, she doesn't give any A's, she's not helpful at all. Her teaching style sucks, her grading is unfair, and she just doesn't care.
She was monotonious. And it is true that she rarely smiled. I found it hard to stay awake in her class. But I worked hard and got the mark I needed.
Good class.
A bit too much reading, but a good class if your ready to work.
Do the reading and she will treat you well. Also she is not hard on the eyes.
was ok, not the most exciting prof. Hard marker on papers, but easy tests.
Galway is awesome! As long as you show some interest and effort she is willing to go out of her way to help. She's my favourite professor at the university, and if you enjoy class discussions I really suggest taking a class with her. She's very knowledgable on her subjects and is a great teacher in general!
Worst Prof ever. She turned me off english. If She likes you she will give you a good mark, if not she will try and fail you.
Very unfair. Extremely unpleasant. She does not go over what you did wrong- even if you ask her too. The books are great and so are the class discussions but it is very apparent who she likes and who she doesn't- and your mark will reflect her opinion of you as a person...and she never smiles.
She is excellent at taking an interesting subject and making it painfully boring. Do not expect a class that teaches you anything, and expect her to treat your writing with little respect.
I enjoyed the actual class, but her essay topics were ridiculously vague and her marking seemed very unfair. I actually tried really hard on the last essay and went to the writing centre for help with it and she only told me everything that was wrong with it. Did I do nothing right on it? Not a very good marker at all...
One of the worst professors I have had! She is very intellectual and knows her material, but she expects you to be as smart as her. If you're not then she criticizes you. I went to her for help and she pretty much told me that I am stupid. Not a good marker and definitely has favourites. I still pulled off an A but it was my worst class.
Galway is extremly unapproachable. I went to her to seek help and she made me feel terrible. She critisizes to no end, and never smiles. No personality or passion for what she teaches. Also very difficult marker!
Her lectures were boring and useless, they in no way helped or furthered my understanding of the texts. she's an unfair marker and totally unapproachable. had i known she would be like this i would never have taken the class!!!
Boring, unfair, unclear, not approachable I would NOT recommend her to anyone. The novel choices were terrible. She taught more history than she did english. The items mention were very basic. The final was a joke and very unfair and the essays on the final werent even worth half the final mark, knows her stuff but a AWFUL teacher
HARD. essays were ridiculously hard. I got mine edited from another english teacher who said it was a good paper, but only got a C+ with Galway. Lectures are pretty boring-mostly discussion based. Lots of reading, and not even books you've likely heard of before. hardest prof I've ever had.
How can you make Children Literature like a pig pit. She is extremely structured like an army. It is boring to listen to her regurgitate the obvious. She expects you to write only the obvious and cannot be creative in this class which is contradictory to university's purpose. Just dont take her class unless you are willing to suffer through repetiti
Dr. Galway is an awesome prof. Yes she is a hard marker but if you put the effort into your essay you will do well. She explained things very well, the class was interesting, and her tests were not hard. Dr. Galway is awesome and I would recommend her to anyone! :)
Essays were ok she liked my writing style which allowed me to pull of some good marks. Her tests are the absolute worst. More of a game of trivial pursuit than a test of knowledge. Expect very obscure details which are not discussed in class and questions on the historical part of her lectures as opposed to the actual text in question
I took Children's Lit with her, she is an extremely hard marker. Her classes are interesting, uses powerpoint, and at the beginning of class she reiterates what she spoke about the previous lecture. Her exams are hard - expects you to remember the names of minor characters. Reading is heavy - be prepared. Despite this - her class was my favorite.
She is a woman who demands respect and academic integrity. If you don't want to be there, don't waste her time. She isn't the bubbly fuzzy warm and cuddly type who is there to make you feel good. Get over it. If you want to learn how to write proper essays and really pull apart short narratives and essays, go with her.
Dr. Galway is the best! She is willing to help you and her comments are very helpful. I have taken 3 classes from her and she is the best professor in the English dept by far!
Pretty tough marker but if your a decent write you will do good on the essays. Her tests are pathetic. Miss one little detail of a question and lose 75% of the mark for that one. Expects very specific details and does not listen to different interpretation of a piece of literature, only her thoughts.
I took this class as my final English class of my degree. I had her for 3008, and was hesitant, but became pleasantly surprised. Yes, she is a hard marker, but she is fair. Taking higher-level classes is recommended - she uses student discussion and presentations to generate discussion. Give her a second chance! I'm glad I did.
Readings are normal, what you would expect. She has not updated her coursepack/reading list in ages. As an A-B student usually I am struggling with her exams. Expect VERY obscure and tough questions: long answer, fill-in-the-blank, and essay. Tough class, wish it wasn't mandatory for Education.
Professor Galway is extremely organized and prepared for lectures. Her quizzes are a challenge, but if you attend class and take notes, they should be a breeze. She is also very approachable in-person. She may seem intimidating, but she is a brilliant prof who is passionate about her studies. She welcomes class discussion and different perspectives
Class content was very interesting. The class format was different from most English courses, with very little in-text analysis during class discussion. The texts were great, ranging from fairy tales to Harry Potter.
Loved this class! Would take another with Galway.
A class worth taking for sure. A tough marker but a good course. Galway makes you work but the books are really good. She's a prof I'd take another class with.
Excellent! Loved the fairy tales the most.
She's extremely knowledgeable and serious about what she teaches, which makes her a little intimidating. She marks hard, so don't expect an easy class. In spite of all this, I really enjoyed her class - just make sure you are ready to work hard!
She is a tough grader on essays, however the tests are easy to get a good mark on. Pay attention and take good notes, there are questions on things she has talked about in class. She does not use moodle. The reading material is very interesting.
Although a pretty tough grader on writing, Galway's lectures are entertaining and filled with interesting information. She is very open to hearing opinions other than her own, which is refreshing! The tests often have fill in the blanks that deal with tiny details, so pay attention to those in the readings!
Galway is a tough grader on papers but her lectures were very clear. If you pay attention, take lots of notes, and do careful reading you can do very well on the tests. However, her tests had some kind of unfair questions that were like trivia and not relevant. On the whole though, I loved her and the class and hope to take more of her classes.
Galway is a great instructor, and if you work hard in the class you can do well. I found that her essays were graded harder and that even though i showed up every class, her tests could be hard. She was willing to meet with me outside of class on many occasions and she is really nice
The course material was clear and shes a nice person but a very tough grader. In another class of the same level, he same papers would have received at least 10 points higher. Actually, it did. The grading isnt very fair.
she knows what she's doing, and she'll know if you don't
Dr. Galway is very clear about what she is looking for. If you pay attention, she gives most test answers as notes you are required to take. Close reading of studied text is important, as she asks some specific questions on exams. She is accessible to meet out of class, and she knows what she is doing. I loved this class and would take it again.
She's very passionate about what she teaches, and super organized, which helps with understanding course content. She cares about all her students, and she's always willing to help. However, not enough time to write tests, and marks essays really hard. can be a GPA crusher even when you try your hardest
Very helpful and thorough. Read the assignments and bring notes and passages for classes as lectures are basically conversations about reading assignments. Absolutely wonderful class and I would for sure take it again!
Dr. Galway has to be one of my favourite professors. I took her English class just as a filler, but it left me wanting to take more of her classes. You do have to be prepared, and read a lot, but it is an English class, what do you expect? Her tests are difficult to do in a 50 min. block, but I never got below 75% on one. Just have to be prepared.
Incredible professor and incredible class. She is so intellectual and inspiring. I loved every minute of her course and her passion for what she does is really encouraging. The midterm and final were very straight forward and I was actually excited to take her tests because it is very cool material. Her Children's Literature course is FANTASTIC!!!
Dr. Galway did a really great job of explaining the literature that was covered during the course. There was a lot of it though - although should be expected in an English class. I would not say I took away much from this class and there were no guidelines on how things would be marked or how to write an academic essay, which would have been nice.
Dr. Galway is one of my favourite profs at the university. She is very smart and easy to talk to. She cares deeply about her students and her work. After two years of her classes, I can say I have learnt a great deal about English Literature. Attendance is mandatory, you will not pass without going. Lots of reading and assignments but worth it!
Professor Galway has an excellent way of lecturing and is engaging. if you take an online class with her prepare for lots of discussion and speaking up in class. the course material was awesome, and i recommend taking a class with her.
Galway is amazing. She really knows what she is talking about and is very passionate about her subject. She also loves class discussion which is awesome because participation counts. Make sure you know what you're doing because one bad mark will tank you.
This class is extremely tough. As an A+ English student this is the worst I have even done in an English class. Her lectures do not provide you with any solid information on the texts and are very vague, making essay writing very difficult. Her essay questions are brutal and her tests are very hard. I would not recommend this class.
Elizabeth was a good professor, but a very hard marker. I learned a great deal from her class, but taking it was hard on my GPA as someone trying to get into the Faculty of Education. Classes are lecture-heavy, and the tests are relatively fair so long as you pay attention and can write by hand at a good pace.
I was stoked for this class and I thought it'd be relatively easy. Nope. The weight of grades were super weird (a 40% paper) and tests were unfair (content not covered in class or very briefly mentioned like facts about an author) My assignment marks were good but the tests ended up tanking my grade.
The exams and grading are insane. We have to write an essay, do 4 quotation/identification responses, and complete a fill-in-the-blank section. In 75mins. Yet she expects it to be as good as a take-home essay. I suggest taking this class after getting accepted into the faculty of ed. I'm a consistent A- student and this class will tank my GPA.
I do not normally have a difficult time maintaining a B+ - A+ range in school and i did incredibly poorly in this class due to her hard marking, high expectations, and strangely specific pop quizzes. she would consistently give me feedback to expand ideas when I was at the word count limit or at the time limit! Would not recommend.
Do NOT take her course. This is the most heinous, careless, and hardest professor I have ever taken in all of my years in university. She tests you on material not mentioned in classes and grades unfairly. If I could go back I'd slap myself across the face when I signed up for this course. God forbid I ever step foot in her classroom ever again.
Amazing! Can't say enough good things! The readings are all really interesting and I like having choice for assignments.
Awesome prof
Professor Galway is one of the best profs I have had at the U of L. She is super knowledgable and helpful, the assignments were clear and she gave me good feedback which really helped me.
Awesome professor. Clear and interesting lectures, fair marking and really great books on the reading list. Would totally take her class again.
She was terrible. Such a hard marker and things from lectures or things not even mentioned would end up on tests. Tanked my GPA, will never take another class with her.
This class was very difficult. She did not share any notes with us on moodle and the odd time she put notes up on the projector she would quickly go through them. Our grade was made up of a midterm/final and 3 written essays. The midterm and final were very difficult and unfair, while the written assignments were handed back late, with harsh marks.
