This is an absolutely wonderful teacher to have for English. She is thorough and quizzes almost daily on class readings, but you will do well if you do your assignments. Extremely helpful about improving writing skills!
Extremely dedicated teacher. She is caring and sweet. I would definately take another one of her classes.
One of the best prof. you will ever have. She's really helpful, and caring. gives out clear instructions. willing meet with you if you need help. couldn't have had a better 101 prof.
Reading assignment are due for most every class and we normally have (easy) pop quizzes on them just to see if we actually did the reading. The essays are not on literature and none of them are in class. The class is discussion-based and we didn't have an exam (just 4 papers)
I really liked her. She is sweet and always willing to help. There was no final exam in my class, just 4 papers and she explained thoroughly what she expected from each. We would have easy quizzes over the stories that we read for class, but after the quizzes and class, we never really had anything else to do with those stories. She was great!
Public writing under EG is great. She keeps her students very engaged and active in class. If you need to fulfill the gen-ed requirement, I definitely recommend her and this course.
Ms Gentry was a great teacher! She's really funny and has a fun class to go to! There is a lot of work but definitely not too much to handle. I recommend her class for sure!
Great class! Mainly discussion-based. Come to class and do readings and you'll be fine. The material is stuff you might actually use one day!
Extremely helpful, laid back, involved professor. She really cared about what she was teaching and about how her students did. Always had something interesting to discuss.
She is a really great teacher! She explains to you exactly what she wants in her papers, and she is constantly asking if anyone needs help. I surely recommend her.
Honestly, a lot of these ratings were from years ago. This is the most recent as I write this. She's a hard grader now. She told us herself. She actually told us she's a hard grader! I talked to people in the class and they agreed that it was not an easy class. She's sort of helpful and she at least tries to be clear. She didn't care about me.
If you want an English teacher that goes above and beyond trying to prepare you for upper classes and is engaging and interesting, take professor Gentry. If you want a class that you only write two papers during the semester, then don't. Seriously though, Professor Gentry is so helpful and has helped me grow as a writer so much. I loved her class.
If you want to be challenged, take Gentry. If you want an easy A, take another teacher. She encourages class participation and her office hours are helpful sometimes, but overall she's a tough and unclear grader.
Tough tough tough grader. I am an above average writer and also have a sister who is an English major that works in the writing work shop. I had my sister revise my papers and I would still get a B- on all of them. I put a lot of work in and did not get a great result. Challenging teacher
Overall not a terrible professor just never puts grades in so you can't see how your doing during the semester. And even if you go to her and ask for your grades she only gives a rough estimate. Other than that you read a good amount out of the textbooks and there's a paper due just about every week.
Professor Gentry is awesome. Nearly everything we read (with the exception of the textbook) was very interesting and fun. Every paper had nice and clear guidlines. She responded quickly to emails and was very helpful. I wish I could take her class again.
Professor Gentry is an awesome teacher! She is well-prepared for class and does a great job diving into the readings. The reading load was a bit much at the beginning of the semester, but it leveled off toward the end. Go to her office hours- she is so helpful! Overall, I would highly recommend!
I would take 100 more classes from her. She gives a lot of reading and after seeing the syllabus, I almost dropped the class and I am so glad I didn't. She is AWESOME. It was almost like reading so much was rewarding because you want to be included in class room discussion. She doesn't lecture and is always opened to new ideas. TAKE HER CLASS.
Prof. Gentry is amazing. If you take her class, there is a ton of reading, but this is the first english lit class I've ever taken and she has helped me out so much. She genuinely cares about her students and wants to see you succeed. One of the best teachers I've had at UT, TAKE HER CLASS.
Professor Gentry is honestly one of the best English teachers out there. She is passionate about literature and is very helpful when you talk to her. I would definitely take her Intro to Fiction class again.
I really enjoyed this class! She is super interesting and is there for you if you put in effort. I would highly recommend reading the material and engaging in discussion. The class is great when everyone's involved. And I loved Prof Gentry! She loves literature and discussing it!
Took this over the fall semester and I got mid to high 80s on all papers except 1 which I got a 74 on and was allowed to redo for an 83. Asked about grades but never got a good answer until my final grade which was horrible. This class doesn't have to be this difficult. Teacher needs to help students not hender them.
Prof Gentry was amazing! You can tell she's really passionate about what she does and wants her students to learn something. She's challenging so if you want to be lazy don't take her. She's always willing to help (a lot!) if you're willing to put in the effort. Lazy students dislike her b/c she is tough but I can't say enough good things about her
Way too emotional for the workplace. I get she's a creative writer, but every other class she seemed like she was on the verge of crying. A good teacher makes it very hard for students to know their views on wealth, politics, etc. By the end of the session we knew about all her opinions and life problems. She just seemed sad, it was a drag
Professor Gentry was SO great! Her class structure was extremely helpful. There's a lot of writing but that's to be expected of an english class. She hold conferences to help you stay on track with your papers and is very responsive to email questions. As long as you try your best, you will succeed in her class.
Professor Gentry was really great! The class was definitely tough and the work load was pretty heavy, but usually it was lots of little assignments vs. only a few papers. She grades pretty tough but she gives good feedback and revising is an option. She is funny and opinionated but is always respectful of others' opinions. I definitely recommend!
Ms. Gentry was a very average college english teacher. She was difficult but not impossible. She was opinionated and fair. However, I felt I was misguided in the times I conferenced with her and went to her office hours. This resulted in receiving average grades on my papers. I could've done better, but I really don't care about english.
Professor Gentry was a really great teacher. If you went to her office hours to get feedback, she will give you a better grade for sure. At first, she will probably seem annoying, but if you discuss in class she will LOVE you. Pretty much if you show her that you are dedicated she will give you a good grade.
Dr. Gentry is great! She loves discussion; a participating class is so much more fun. She doesn't ask too much of students, and 257 is merged with 255 so it is an easy honors credit. There are 5 big papers for the year and 5 free absences. She is fun to talk to after class or during office hours and offers revisions.
She is really nice, and you can tell she actually cares about doing a good job. She seems to try to do right by the students. She also seems to enjoy the content of the class. She absolutely killed me on one paper for being vague about plot details, so just make sure you include as many details as possible on quizzes and in-class essays.
Professor Gentry is really nice and passionate. She is very upbeat and energetic about English. Her fiction class is pretty intense; we had to read 7 novels and write a couple of papers. Don't take her if you're looking for an easy A. You have to be active about your reading and intentional about your writing.
I wouldn't recommend if you don't have a strong writing background. I took AP and IB English courses in high school so did well on papers, but definitely had to work hard on them. Although grading criteria isn't detailed, Professor Gentry is available whenever you need her outside of class and asking her questions really helps clarify.
I definitely do not feel as though I was graded fairly in this class. I took college English classes where I was scrutinized on my writing and still received a B+ in this class. I went to office hours, the writing center, and got positive feedback every time until I saw my final paper grade. This class was harder than all of my others combined.
Professor Gentry is amazing. She is very passionate about writing, and she loves it when everyone in class discusses the novels that we read. There is a significant amount of reading, but I loved every single book. Her office door is always open, and she is just a lovely person. I cannot say enough good things. Take her! Best professor at UT!
Gentry is one of the best English professors I've ever had. She really cares about each and every one of her students. All of her classes were lecture based, so as long as you participate, she'll love you. This course is very reading intensive, so if you're looking for a class to blow off, this isn't the one. There's only 2 papers (which rocks).
Love Professor Gentry! However, this class is not easy. Lots of reading! If you don't go to class you definitely won't do well. That being said, if you go to class it isn't too bad. Just read and study a lot. It's an interesting class, and Gentry clearly loves teaching English.
Professor Gentry is great with breaking down texts. She is willing to help when you need it and is very honest when giving feedback. She is a bit of a control freak which can be a little annoying but she means well. It was a lot of reading but I thoroughly enjoyed all of the books we read. She has clear guidelines which makes everything simple.
Not very understanding when it came to computer errors. Spoke very condescending toward students who asked questions. Would not recommend
I really loved Professor Gentry. Most in class time was spent discussing books read or papers we were working on. All in class work was pretty easy and she gives a good amount of time to work on big assignments. She's a pretty tough grader for essays but is willing to work with you on improving them. She's very nice and I'm taking her again for 298
I love Gentry as a person, but the papers are graded harshly and she gives most students around a 90 (which is not an A in honors). She's helpful, passionate , and sweet, but if you want an A, get ready to work. I feel that her honors section of English is much more challenging than non-honors sections (which is ok, but be aware).
I thought Gentry was a good professor. It is important to just get on her good side at the beginning of the semester by speaking up in class and participating. Participation matters a lot to her and you can tell she likes the students who talk more. Over all very caring and nice outside of class as well. She even wrote me a recommendation letter.
Professor Gentry was my favorite professor last year. She makes an effort to get to know her students. She is very conscientious. You can tell she loves English and teaching it. She is also very adaptable, and it seems like she is open to learning from students. If you come to her office hours she will help you with papers, and you will do well.
Professor Gentry is a real gem. She is extremely passionate about her discipline and knowledgeable. The course material for our Themes in Lit. class was interesting for the most part! Participation is KEY. Get on her good side by speaking up in class and going to her office hours. Exams are based on class discussions so definitely go to class.
Ms. Gentry is a great teacher. You can tell she really cares about her students and she makes an effort to help you inside and outside of class. You do need to participate in class and show effort. Also, going to her office hours are very helpful since some of the papers can be a bit difficult to write without guidance.
Professor Gentry is a hard, unforgiving grader. She does give good instructions on what she is looking for in her essays etc., though. She is very smart and starts great classroom discussions. Despite the difficulty, I would take one of her classes again.
Ms. Gentry is an amazing person. She truly loves what she teaches and wants her students to reach their fullest potential. However, she is an extremely hard grader, and her expectations are sometimes not the most clear. There is a lot of reading in this class, but it is a very fair workload for this type of course. Do your readings!!
Both the class and Gentry are good choices! the topics are relatively interesting and the class discussions are good if you participate. Out of class, you have about 40 pages to read before each class meeting; most of the time it's pretty fast. The only things I didn't care for in the class are attendance and phone policies, but it's not too bad.
I highly recommend Ms. Gentry! She has true passion for what she does and genuinely wants to see her students learn and succeed. Her class has good discussion, and she appreciates participation. She gives constructive feedback on papers and is always willing to help! Not an overload of homework, either:)
She is probably the toughest teacher I've had at UT but one of the best. She is going to make you work for your grade, but you will grow as a writer and student in her class. She's incredibly knowledgable in her field and is interested in what you have to say and do in her class. There's also plenty of opportunities to improve your grade.
Ms. Gentry is a very good English professor. She clearly loves English and truly cares about her students and making them better writers. Her class is not easy and you have to work for it, but if you put in the effort you will appreciate her a lot. She gives good feedback and I highly recommend reaching out to her for advice and help on the essays.
Honestly, the worst part about Gentry is her late work policy. If you are going to be even 1 minute late, just don't turn it in. She gives lots of good feedback to improve your writing though!
If you have a different opinion from her dont voice it unless you want a bad grade
Ms. Gentry is such an amazing lecturer & person - always encouraging us to engage with class content in multiple contexts, and super personable both online and in the classroom! She grades tough on papers, but her feedback is enormously helpful, and if you engage in her class, you will succeed. It's clear she loves her content and her students.
Gentry was one of my favorite professors so far. Homework was always a participation grade. She has 'accountability assignment' that helped me stay on top of my essays & not procrastinate. You're allowed 5 absences before point deductions, but if needed she lets you zoom for no penalty. She was very caring and understanding & gave great feedback.
I would definitely take Professor Gentry again if I could. She gave great feedback on assignments and homework really set you up for success on papers and in the class in general. Make sure to complete all of your homework assignments though because she doesn't round and I would have gotten at least an A- if not an A if I'd done all my homework.
The class is a little bit difficult, which is expected for an honors course. Professor Gentry is super cool though and if you do the work to the best of your ability you'll do good.
Professor Gentry's ENG253 class may be reading intensive, but as long as you get your reading done most assignments are participation grades. She is a very caring teacher and does a great job getting to know her students. If you stay on top of things, participate in class, and stay positive this class will be a breeze and you'll probably enjoy it.
Professor Gentry is both caring and understanding. I took this class as an elective VC credit and I would recommend it again. Just read when you're supposed to and show up to class and you cannot fail.
Professor Gentry is so kind and truly cares about her students! She gives thoughtful feedback on papers and is happy to help you with suggestions before submitting any. There are 2 major projects throughout the semester, one secondary source research paper and one qualitative research paper. She is very direct and checks in on everyone.
Professor Gentry is funny and very kind! She gives great feedback on papers and homework assignments. There's only a few major projects throughout the semester: a secondary source research paper, a poster, and a qualitative research paper. She's always available if you need help at any point!
She promotes a collaborative environment during class, meaning she partners you up, she will ask students to volunteer to have their paper reviewed in front of the class, etc. I'm personally not a huge english fan, but she guided us along through two papers and it was all fine in the end. Nevertheless, she is friendly!
She really genuinely cares about her students and her job. Do not take as a blowoff class you have to put in the work and be enthusiastic about English. Strict late policy but she is also understanding if she knows you are a hard worker. She is a great teacher and wants you to care about your studies because she cares too.
Professor Gentry is hilarious, thoughtful, and genuinely kind. She is super flexible and very clearly wants her students to succeed. She does not assign busy work and is a super fair grader. Lots of open office hours and feedback to go along with grades. I would totally recommend her class. Great teacher, lovely person!
There will be homework due at the beginning of every single class period. I rarely felt prepared for the homework and found the homework situation very stressful. If you have her, go to office hours whenever possible, and stay on top of homework, even if you have to do it badly to get it done.
There is homework for every class but Ms. Gentry is a very kind and approachable person. She is also a fairly easy but slow grader.
She is a very good professor, and very helpful. You will leave the class a better writer. Be prepared to have your writing scrutinized by the class though and defend your writing. It wasn't hard to do well in there if you worked hard, but if you aren't prepared to make the class a priority, I would not recommend taking it.
The book choices are very cool! She brings great eccentric discussions on the characters and contemporary connections. Do expect to do assignments due start of nearly every class though, and papers can be a tad tough. She is very understanding and kind to talk to and gives good feedback. Overall is a great class for improving your writing/reading!
Amazing professor. She gives great feedback and really cares about improving each student's writing.
She's an amazing professor and very engaging but the class has a lot of work
Gentry is an amazing English Professor. Participation matters a lot because ENGL253 is a very discussion-heavy class, but she makes the environment very comfortable to voice opinions. There is a lot of reading before class and sometimes she doesn't provide pdf versions of the stories so download audible or something. She slays, take her classes.
This is a writing-focused class, so you can expect a lot of writing, but Professor Gentry is the sweetest ever and truly cares about her students.
Professor Gentry truly does care about her students succeeding. She gives good feedback so go to office hours or volunteer your paper for in class feedback. The class as a whole was pretty laid back. Homework was almost always to just work on your essay. No final.
Ms. Gentry is a phenomenal teacher. She is very accessible if you need help through office hours. We had to write two papers, and if you take advantage of office hours, they aren't bad at all. Class was very engaging, and she is a really fun teacher.
Ms. Gentry is a great option for 298 if you're willing to work and have homework after each class. She is very kind and wants her students to succeed, but it is important to put in effort. Overall, the class was not too hard, and she gives you the material you need to be successful. If you have questions, just ask
Professor Gentry is amazing, and she genuinely cares about each student. Your grade will be based on your effort though. Depending on your writing style, this class can be very intensive. If you procrastinate, homework is just sections of your papers, which helps you avoid writing it all the night before. I highly recommend her.
The course itself can be difficult if you've never done research papers before, but she is very clear with expectations, assistance, and feedback. Ms. Gentry is just a real one. She would go on side rants or say when she what she was thinking, and is friendly especially if you engage.
Pretty nice professor, grades quite tough but not difficult.
I respect her effort to connect with students and push honors student further, but for the first 2 months of the semester this class was more work than all of my other classes combined. This class is just a nuisance if you do not specifically need honors credit. Assignments due pretty much nightly that are just mind numbing busy work.
Professor Gentry was one of my favorite professors, and she was extremely understanding and helpful when it came time to write the papers. There were only two papers and one project due in that class, and she walks through each step in class, which is helpful for someone who's never written a research paper.
Professor Gentry is the best! She cares about every student and wants them to actually learn the class content. There is a lot of homework in 298 but as long as you give effort and turn it in on time you will get 100 on the homework assignments. She grades harder on papers but there are many opportunities to get her feedback. Would take again!
Mrs. Gentry is one of the best teachers I've ever come across. She taught me so much about my writing and she shows genuine interest in each student's life. She's super quirky in the best way and is one of a kind.
So much unnecessary homework
Professor Gentry was amazing! She is a little quirky but cares so much about her students and is so helpful with feedback during the writing process. As long as you put in the work you will do well.
I feel like I was able to become a much better writer from taking her class. She cares so much about her students! She lets you miss 5 classes (which was fair in my opinion). I would recommend saving them for the end of the semester. She also lets you have one extension on a paper of your choosing, which was VERY helpful.
