There are a lot of reading assignments in her class, but you retain the majority of what you talk about in class. Just don't fall behind on your reading, and go to class and you'll do just fine.
I had her for Women in Literature, quite a bit of reading. Interesting class, not a bad instructor, but she is new so things could drastically change between semesters. FYI
teacher is way to hard for her own good, take someone else. She is kinda flaky about beachboard too.
Really useful information, helpful activities, and engaging class discussion. No complaints at all.
She is very good in clarifying her assignments to the class. In order to pass the class you need to show up on time or else she marks you tardy!!! Overall she is hard but fair in term of grading.
Awesome teacher! She shows up late a lot of the time, so she's not too hard if you too are late. She's really interesting and super smart. There is a lot of reading, but it is an english class, so it's to be expected. Show up to class everyday, pay attention to her lectures, and you should do well.
She's always late and returns papers much later than you would like her to. She also grades hard. I was disapointed in the class.
A really nice and very interesting teacher. Not too bad on the writing. 4 short papers (2-4 pages) and 1 midterm (5-7 pages). The quizzes are easy and you can get etra credit on them. The final was a choice between take home or in-class essay. Uses bizarre yet interesting examples. Very nice about whatever you have to say. Slow on gettinback work.
Most of the time she's late to class (8:00am class). Hardly ever returns papers on schedule; she's quite flaky. The grading kind of hard, but if you put efforts, you should be fine. She's fun-tries to be "students' friend". Show up to class on time, you should be fine. I got a A.
lots to read.important to go to class to better understand the material.hard grader!!take someone else if possible
I liked her at first becaue she was nice and smart but I soon saw what an extremely hard grader she was. I worked so hard in the class and still ended up with a C. She's extremely flaky, usually turns papers back 3 to 4 weeks later so you don't know what she expects anyways. She really rips up your papers, so if you can take someone else do it!
Very knowledgable teacher. Very controlling. Expects you in class every session and keeps u there until very last minute. Talks too much, and tries too hard to be like the students. Talks too much about her own PHD studies. If you want a decent grade meet with her in her office so she can help u with the essays. She is very willing to help u.
Her Women and LIterature class was a great option. Paper topics were thoughtful and not boring run-of-the-mill prompts. Grading is extremely fair and what could potentially be a very boring subject is dealt with in an interesting manner.

Had her for both Women's Lit and Survey of American Lit B. Like some other users mentioned, she can be a VERY difficult grader. If you are an english minor or are taking this class for fun, look for a different teacher. She expects a lot out of you. Attendance counts. Class is definitely not as boring as it could be. She has some interesting stories, but mainly she's a geek. She often goes off on tangents about Harry Potter or fan fiction. Very helpful if you're looking to improve your writing.
She is a really cool teacher, she always returns our papers on time and she is never late to class!!!
Elizabeth is a very knowledgable professor, but she is demanding in the papers she requires, being that she is an English professor teaching a women's studies class. If you are a strong academic writer, you will do well. She is rather flackey in getting tests and papers back to you though, it is always delayed for one reason or another.
She clearly knows what she's talking about and the readings she chose were interesting, however, she really was bad at getting papers back. She was often late to class blaming traffic, her cat, etc. And she kept class over as well. Sometimes she ate in class, which I found distracting. If these things don't matter to you then take her.
She is very helpful and nice. She just goes on way too many tangents. It drives me nuts how she could explain the backstory to a backstory. We should be spending more time on the subject at hand without getting hung up on every little detail that may or may not help us understand the works involved. If you can handle tangents she's great.
She tends to go off on tangents A LOT. Her quizzes are ridiculous because she grades on anal tiny details from the readings that only she would understand or care about. She never assigns hwk, but only gives quizzes a few times and her in-class 7 short essay tests are unreasonable. Did not enjoy her class at all! Do not take her!
This teacher is disorganized, frazzled all the time, and hyper! The very few assignments she gives, make no sense what so ever, and she takes forever to give graded assignments back! She gets so side tracked every time class meets, talking about her personal life, we rarely get through all the reading due that day. Don't ever take her courses!
I really didn't learn anything, other than what I learned on my own. She makes you read different texts and critical articles on the text--that's all. She tries to lecture on it, but usually she gets sidetracked. Also, she is an extremly hard grader and unwilling to compromise with the grade she gives you. This class is bad times...beware.
Routinely late! Plays favorites!Procratanates on giving assignments and then expects the students to cram in good work in a shourt amount of time.
Professor Guzik is one of the worst professors I've had. She has a nice personality, but her grading criteria discourages English students from enjoying English. She is disorganized and it took her a month to get us our syllabus. She takes forever to get assignments back and her lectures are mainly about her instead of the course material.
She is completely disorganized, and is frequently found talking about anything BUT the reading. She is arrogant and spends a lot of time talking about her past and doesn't get to the actual reading until class is almost over. She also took about a month to return our first paper, and another month for our midterm. If you want to waste your time, ta
I liked Elizabeth! She does get sidetracked, but her stories are funny. She returns your work faster if you turn in a paper copy. I'd take a class by her again.
Elizabeth is obviously a very nice and personable person. This is great but she certainly needs to work on teaching. She is ALWAYS at least 10 minutes late to class and takes so long to return assignments. To make matters worse, she's not a super easy grader either. Avoid her if possible...
For many people, Elizabeth IS a very difficult prof. She is rather biased (prefering topics on feminist and queer studies), but your grade honestly comes down to the quality of your writing. If you feel you're not writing to the best of your ability, chances are that she'll also notice and grade severely. Overall, though, she's extremely helpful.
If you value your GPA do not take this professor. Even if you are the most brilliant person on earth you will not get a good grade. Some of the professors from the Psychology department should pay her a visit because she needs her head examined. She is a narcissist who thinks she is the only person alive who can write well. Don’t let it be a surpri
This class is horrible! She has unrealistic expectations of the work load. You basically have to read a book every night and instead of explaining it, she just gives you a pop quiz (that is never multiple choice). She rambles on about how she's from Boston and she never talks about the readings. Unless you can figure out on your own, GOOD LUCK!
Attendance is mandatory, which sucks because you're forced to listen to her talk about herself! Participation is your entire grade, so if you don't understand eighteenth century lit. she's not going to be the one to explain it. She is unorganized and doesn't have time to grade papers, but plenty of time to watch RedSox games. Avoid her if you can!
Make sure you have a full understanding of the readings before you get to class because instead of explaining them she tests you on it right away. Going to class is useless, but attendance is a huge part of your grade. She is an extremely hard grader. She has high expectations for students but she doesn't fulfill her role as the instructor!!!!
"Professor" Guzik is psycho. I know way more about her then any work we read in the class. She spends almost no time going over readings OR the way she would like the essay to be structured and then grades you as if you know everything about English lit. I only recommend her if you want to learn about a band geek from Boston.
made course extremely hard for a freshmen level class Syllabus was not up until Thanksgiving. She is now craming an essay a research report a presentation and a final exam into the last three weeks. Only one assignment prior to thanksgiving in mid 0ct but not returned until December 3 for some 5 for others only lectured on personal life do not take
Don't get me wrong, Liz is VERY nice... I just don't think she has enough time to teach. She needs to understand that her students are not at her level of understanding lit, which is why she should teach them. I felt so dumb in her class for not being able to read and comprehend at her level. If you're not an English major, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
This is the only C I have received out of 110 units. Crazy grading, unfair practices, completely unorganized, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR if you want to be treated fairly.
Nice person, but teaches more about personal life than class. She is the preface queen and sucks at returning graded work. Wouldn't recommend this teacher.
Very nice, good personality, HORRIBLE TEACHER! I got a 4.0 last semester, I have a 3.7 gpa, but can't seem to get an A on one of her papers. Isn't clear about what she wants, and takes forever to get papers back. Had one paper due before spring break and now 5 major assignments in the last 5 weeks. I used to have a good GPA. Oh well.
This teacher ONLY talks about herself...and thats about it. I know that she is from Alabama and Boston, has a cat and hates her curly hair. But I dont know anything about the texts b/c she never discusses it. Grades unfair, unreasonable amount of reading, etc. DONT TAKE HER!!! Her grading is inconsistant and unfair. She is a cold-hearted snake
WORST TEACHER EVER. always late.Grades hard.Goes off topic and excuses about how shes always late. Overall, poor quality way of teaching. HIGHLY supremely to stay away from her. She takes forever to return paper, and is very UNORGANIZED. Take another person.
Although she does deviate from the text by talking about personal life, she is an intelligent and entertaining professor. Very liberal, Lies My Teacher told me and Norton American Anthology. Disorganized, but knowledgeable of the subject, allows for discussion but also puts her input..good because she actually teaches, overall pretty happy w/ class
She is very funny as a professor & made this heinous early american lit class tolerable with her jokes and personal stories...which there are a lot of. if you actually have a legit interest in this subject take someone else just because you wont appreciate her humor. Im an english major & not a HUGE fan of literature & her humor makes it enjoyable!
Always late, doesn't mind humiliating students in class, doesn't return work, and will grade your paper in a matter of 3 sec. and still give a B. Not worth taking. You won't learn a thing about American Literature except the role her life plays in it.
I had Elizabeth for four courses 2004-2007, and I really liked her. Some students didn't like her, and I know why: They don't read the assignments and/or their papers suck, and she calls them out for it. I've read student papers, and most are like nails on a chalkboard or like trying to read or listen to Fox News.
Okay, here's the deal. It is true, that if you read the assigned material, you will get a good grade. Don't be fooled by her laid back attitude because looks are very deceiving. She does grade a little harder on essays than your typical professor. If your main worry is to have your papers or tests handed back quickly, this class is not for you.
She never returns papers, and is a very hard grader. However, she is always available for office hours and makes quite an effort to help her students understand the material. Pretentious at times and often off-track, she is a mixed bag.
She does not return anything on time or may never return the last paper. She does have a great personality and helps with the boring topics. Overall, must be a good writer or will suffer her hard grading.
its true. she's a hard grader. you'll get your paper about 2 months later with all sorts of comments. and she easily gets off topic in class going on and on about things her students care less about. she needs to spend more time going over what she expects from assignments.
Absolutely not! No. Do not attempt to take this class. You'll be so lost, bored, uninspired. Why? Because Guzik's hard to follow -- she'll change the class schedule several times throughout the semester, then she'll talk about her life (very plain), and then she'll read through pages of poetry painfully quick. Poetry should not be taught by Guzik!
The hardest class I've ever taken at Long Beach. It's true -- she just talks about random things, shows up late all the time, and you have no clue what your grade is 'till the end. That being said, she's pretty cool and when she acutally DOES talk about the material: she's an extremely engaging and interesting teacher. But that's a pretty rare thin
While Prof. Guzik's track record isnt the best, you must take in consideration the task at hand. Do you realize how boring it is to teach and read Walt Whittman? Her comments and stories keep things relevant. Quizzes include extra credit. Two essays,(1x 3pg, 1x 5pg), 5 topics to choose from, MORE than willing to correct your paper before submission
It's true, she is unclear. There are quite a few assignments, but see her in her office hours regularly. They helped me. She takes the time to clear everything up and help you out. She grades tough, but is coherent in her comments. They are meant to make you a better writer, if you can't take criticism then I don't know why you are writing.
Guzik is tough but she's also extremely, impossibly fun. She really pushes you to work your butt off and thoroughly engage in literary analysis and criticism--but she pushes back and extends deadlines a lot. She looks at quality, not quantity--and she is more than willing to help you on her own time. DO take her!
She is a tough grader, it's true but amazingly challenging to her students. Helpful in office hours and makes you a better writer. Only real issue is going off topic.
She can be a harsh grader but it's for your own good. My writing really did improve because of her class. Also, writing a good paper is much easier if you do all the assigned readings. They are all relevant! She is also super helpful when you're lost and her lectures are very animated. Take her classes! They are worth all the reading.
She was the most disorganize teacher I had in my whole life. She always goes off topic in class and during office hours. Also, she gives false hope to students when you go to her for office hours. Please don't take her for English one. She actually made a bad writer after her class.
Elizabeth was is a TOUGH grader! Probably the toughest i've ever had. But it really does help out in the end, your writing improves drastically after she highlights your mistakes & what you need to fix. She as a person is awesome she is very funny & is just there to genuinely help us students improve our writing. I do recommend students to take her
Guzik is the hardest english teacher I have had. She talks to much. Her feedback really helps if she explains it verbally b/c her handwriting is crappy. Overall, if you are looking for a brutally honest professor and not a pat on the back, I recommend Guzik.
Guzik is a VERY helpful and kind person, but not the greatest professor. She is very scatterbrained and frequently goes off on tangents. (But they are often quite interesting) She likes cats and chocolate *hint hint*
nice, but not a good teacher.she spends the whole class talking about herself. doesn't answer email, didn't provide a syllabus until week 5, doesn't explain or model assignments, doesn't return them on time or follow through with any commitment. irrelevant material.absolutely no evidence of any kind of preparation for class, even if she's on time.
Dependent on some of these reviews I thought I had a different teacher completely! She was absolutely great. Very clear and directed lectures. Not many notes on the class, just mostly class discussion. I didn't even study for the midterm because I felt so confident in the material. She always responded to my emails. She does run late though.
I loved Guzik. She does go off on tangents, but it made the class go by faster. I thought the class was straight forward, and I learned a lot. A few short response papers (analyze the text 1 page not hard) and 1 short paper that she will work with you. midterm/final open notes/book/web.. so easy. loved this class, learned a lot!
If you want to text through an entire class to avoid inevitable boredom or death by incessant, meaningless chatter, take Guzik. The class was insanely easy, to say the least. But, if you want to learn anything besides her love for baseball and misadventures with the TSA, you're shiz out of luck. You'll probably get an A, but hate your life.
She's helpful when you go see her during her office hours, but other than that, she is a pretty horrible professor. I dislike her teaching practices. You will learn nothing in class other than her biography and her love for baseball. DO NOT take her.
she is a cool person, but not as a professor!!! shes a VERY picky grader... shes doesnt have herself together.. nothing ever went as scheduled.. office hours are really helpful though.. HUGE red sox fan!! good if youre a sports person, you can talk for hours about sports..
She is not the English teacher to pick for Remedial 1. She could be nice but she is EXTREMELY unorganized, she does not give back your grades papers back in time (as late as 2-3 weeks), She grades extremely hard. Oh yeah and she starts talking about her own personal life for a long time. The whole class thought she was the worst teacher.
Professor Guzik knows her subject well, but she is not suited to be a prof. She's completely disorganized. It took her more than a month to return our first assignment. How am I supposed to improve if I don't receive my papers back to see what it is that I need to improve on? Great individual, terrible professor.
Professor Guzik is a very fun person, but only take her class if you're looking for a disorganized, off topic kind of professor. She takes her time grading & giving back papers so don't expect them back for another month after you've turned it in. Her syllabus is completely irrelevant due to the fact that she changes the dates of assignments a lot.
She's an exciting teacher because she uses a lot of analogy to explain the subject and she's very relative or understanding. But if you prefer a professor who's more lenient with the agenda, then it's recommended you don't take her because she'll get unorganized with your work, taking a few weeks to grade.
4 Essays, 1 Midterm, 1 Final. Not a helpful teacher. She just made things more complicated than it should have been and grades ridiculously hard.
WORST CLASS I'VE EVER HAD, NEVER AGAIN.Don't take her word for when something's due, just add a week and that's the real due date. Don't expect to get anything back on time either. She has a tendency to change the schedule throughout the semester and has no consistency.
Worst professor I have ever had at CSULB. She is very unorganized because she does not give feedback on essays or assignments in a timely manner so that students could improve before the semester ends. Everything is rushed. I think this professor needs to take a time management class. However, she is clear about her assignments.
My least favorite proffesor so far. She really does get off topic a lot. Grades pretty harshly. But doesn't put in a lot of time to teach the class herself! She makes us watch 40 minute long videos of her just talking!!! And thats what we are suppose to learn! But we dont learn ANYTHING! Its so pointless I feel like all of us just show up just bc!
Always delay. Not on top of her work. Its taking her almost a month to give our essays back then load us with work when during finals week.
She is a really nice teacher but she is really unorganized. Very unclear about due dates, gave our essays back pretty late, goes off topic too much and grades harshly.. Nuff said.
She was a very kind person, however she was very inconsistent on due dates, always pushed back due dates leaving her students minimal time at the end of the semester to finish essays. We wrote 5 essays in the class and she only gave back 2. The spring semester is coming up, I have still not received my grades for the other 3 essays and the final.
She gives a lot of work. She is also very unorganized and assigns last minute homework.
Seriosuly one of the worst professors I have ever had. So incredibly inconsistent with deadlines and ALWAYS late to class. She feels the need to share personal details of her life that are completely irrelevant to the subject. Grades harshly and provides no explanation as to why. Avoid at all costs.
Horrible :l she is extremely inconsistent with deadlines. Hard grader! classes usually focus on grammer! If you go to office hours she will pretty much write your essays for you and you will recieve a C or B ! Avoid if possible!
Avoid her at all cost; she is definitely a tough teacher who pushes everything (deadlines, test, activities) back just because she can't keep up with her own schedule.
Avoid avoid avoid. It takes her the whole semester to grade one essay, then she thinks it is good to assign two essays in the last two weeks of class. Wastes time in class. Pushed every essay back then grades way too harsh. Avoid avoid. I got an A on every essay ever. Her class got a D.
Professor Guzik is contradicting and is inconsistent. She keeps pushing back due dates and there are essays that are due after finals week. I would not recommend taking her.
Worst professor I have ever experienced. She pushes dates back so you have no time to do anything, never hands papers back, grades EXTREMELY harshly, and teaches nothing. She has no idea what she's doing and she shouldn't be a professor. Don't ever take her.
If your looking for an easy- A this isn't your class. She is a tough grader despite the critical comments. The class itself is easy it is just the work that she throws at you is kinda hard to sallow, and as previously noted she does push back deadlines for the slackers. Anyway attend class go to her office hours and do the work and it will be easy.
Avoid at all cost. Very disorganized and confusing. Please refrain from taking her, if you plan on getting As, dont take this class. She gives you two essays to do within the last two weeks (the weeks of finals). Not clear. Terrible "teaching" methods. Doesn't even tell you what your grade is. Inconsistent pop quizzes. The worst teacher imaginable.
Professor Guzik is pretty disorganized and always behind on returning assignments or even giving out assignments in the first place. But, she knows she is behind and gives students extra time to complete assignments. She is very nice, funny, and helpful.
I really enjoyed this class. Elizabeth Guzik put our readings into a greater context and the discussions in her classroom were always fun and interesting. I also was introduced to some of my new favorite 20th century writers in this class. A lot of what we covered and discussed in this course has really stuck with me!
I love this woman's personality, but she's horrible as a professor. She was completely unorganized, had no idea what was going on in class, and was very unclear on what she wanted. Her feedback is useless. No lecture. No examples. Nothing helpful whatsoever. Expect assignments to be returned EXTREMELY late.
Avoid this person at all costs. Extremely unprofessional, no real guidance, doesn't return graded work back for months at a time, and grades hard.
Avoid this person at all costs. She is unprofessional, gives no real guidance, doesn't return graded work back for months at a time, and grades hard.
How she ran the class truly frustrated me. No course schedule since her deadlines are always unclear. Unnecessary online lectures and quizzes. Wastes time in class and gives work back super late. However, she helps improve your writing and is way more clear during her office hours. Overall, she's a very disorganized professor but is helpful.
Avoid her she makes you feel dumb and her essays arent interesting she expects too much, if you want an easy fail take this class
This class is NOT easy, that is FOR SURE. I can tell you that, she's a very nice lady but she really sucks at explaining things. Due dates are inconsistent. She grades VERY harshly. Half the class dropped/withdrawal or switched. Remaining students had no other choice. If you hate writing essays and you're very busy, don't take this class.
super boring and long class, talks a lot and things can get pretty confusing. Very harsh grader hard to get an A on papers.
There is no doubt that she is intelligent but she is disorganized and doesn't explain things clearly. Most of the class time is spent with her talking about herself and we don't get into any material. She is a very harsh grader but yet doesn't go over material (i.e. Jane Eyre). Teaching is not her forte. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
She is an amazing person, very intelligent. She does care about her students because she modifies the class and schedule to make sure we pass. She gets off topic a lot, adds personal stories, so you really have to listen and keep up with what she's saying bc she gives a huge explication for one simple concept. That's what makes her confusing.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Horrible Professor in ALL aspects. I had never ever had had a horrible professor in my 4yrs at CSULB . Did not talk about "Literary Theory" at all , she only talked about herself. Pushed back the due dates and we had no chance to see our grades on our first two papers we turned in. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is incredibly intelligent and a great person, however she is not a very good professor at all. Never had a solid syllabus all semester as dates and assignments were constantly changedmoved around. Offers very little instruction, but expects exceptional work.. extremely tough grader. Very stressful semester.
Guzik is a decent person, but god awful professor. She will constantly push due dates back and never return previous work. It is also impossible to receive an A on her papers because she expects entirely too much without her giving the proper direction. Avoid her class at all cost. She will give you too much stress.
Even though Guzik was there for you to help, she is horrible at getting assignments back to you. We didn't receive our mid term papers back until THE DAY OF THE FINAL. If you must take her you will survive, but be aware that you will need to try to keep up because she will give nothing back.
She's the only professor I would NEVER take again. Her lectures were boring and led nowhere and she has an air about herself when she comments on your papers, that is when she actually hands them back to you. If you want to learn something and not feel stressed to the highest possible point DO NOT TAKE HER.
She's a wonderful person. Easy to get along with. We followed the Norton all semester long. Quizzes almost every two weeks; she gave us a quiz the following class after midterms. She hasn't handed our short paper 2 prompt yet, and it's the ending week before finals. Unclear on papers. She pushes back deadlines so far, papers are due after finals.
Do NOT take this teacher if you want to learn anything. She is a nice person but a terrible teacher. She takes the entire two hours to tell students about her personal life. She does not give you any feedback on your assignments because she never actually grades them. A lot of stress with little to no rewards!
Nice person, poor professor. Never returned anything so u are in the dark on ur grade, kept on making excuses, gets off topic in lectures and discusses personal life, constantly delayed due dates, graded unfairly. Midterm is in-class essay, short paper, final is 4-5 page essay, 34 pop quizzes, 1 presentation. Take her only if have no other choice.
She's a perfectly nice teacher but I would avoid her if you want to retain your sanity. Assigning a term paper two weeks before the end of classes is not something I want from a teacher, but with her you'll certainly get it. Her feedback would be helpful if you get your work back in time. Despite this, she has tons of hilarious stories to share.
Lectures and discussions from this class have really stuck with me. She finds really good material for her classes and she's wonderful to visit during office hours. She's reasonable and will really take the time to help you out.
She's hilarious and really knows her stuff. She's a tough grader but she's seems passionate about her subject. Sometimes her lectures are way too long and she goes off on tangents. Didn't see her outside of class although she offered the class help. Didn't return essays on time, but they were pretty simple assignments.
Worst teacher I have EVER had. She never gives clear directions on what she wants on assignments, and she grades ridiculously hard. She says she will post an assignment on BB but never does. We didn't get the syllabus or assignment sheet until the 9th week of school! Oh, and forget about getting an email response from her ever. Avoid her!
She gives no clear expactations on anything. You will not get grades back because every assignment is pushed back and she makes excuses. Never discusses any of the material just her personal life and still grades hard No one knows what is going on
You will never receive your work back. Ever. You will never know what is happening in class and the funny part is, she seems like she doesn't know what's happening in class either. She makes everything up on the spot. Be prepared to become more educated on her life than anything else and hear the same jokes repeated over and over. Worst prof ever.
AVIOD HER!!! She is the worst professor I have ever had! Nothing in the class was clear, and the due dates to the assignments were unknown and constantly changing. We didn't get the syllabus or schedule until week 9 in the semester and it still wasn't final. She never emails back, EVER! I learned absolutely nothing in this class. She is awful!!!
The absolute worst teacher at LBS. Decent person, hilarious, but an atrocious teacher. Doesn't take teaching seriously. Very disorganized. No passion. Thinks her life is more important than the course. Takes a month to return papers. Spoke with Eileen Klink who made excuses for her. Letters sent to associate dean and dean. Don't take Ms. Guzik!!!!
She's a funny person but I learned more about her life then I did the actual material. Prepare for lots of stories about Boston. She's quite disorganized and I never got my grade for the last two papers or the final. I expected to get a C or D but ended up with an A
AVIOD!!!!she is always late. She never passed back papers on time. no clear due dates and she always changed her due date. the papers assigned required a Max of 6-10 pages. And everyone I MEAN EVERYONE got Ds or Fs on there papers. I cried of joy when I passed her class with a low C. Lol any other professor would of given me a B or A. AVIOD
She's a decent person and you can tell she means well but she's a horrible teacher. Lectures were more about her personal life than on the assigned material. Schedule and due dates were always pushed back. Her requirements are unclear yet she's a tough grader. She even assigned us two papers due AFTER the final. Definitely avoid if possible.
Guzik is a good person, don't get me wrong... but she shouldn't be a professor. Most of the time, you don't know what's happening in the class, she talks mostly about her life, she keeps pushing back due dates, she doesn't read entirely the books she assigns. Our final was due after finals ended. Avoid her.
She did not teach at all. The class was focused on her personal life and random stuff. Do not take her classes.
Professor Guzik is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. She constantly changed due dates, didn't give us the syllabus until 1/2 way through the semester, and talks more about herself than anything to do with the course. She spends the entire two hours talking about one very obvious detail in the text, but doesn't cover more complex ideas.
Not learned much at all. Very hard grader. Expect to read a lot.
She is a very bad professor. She takes about 1 hour to explain one thing and we think we are going to class to do something and never have time for it. I would never recommend this class to anyone because I wouldn't want to put you through this torture.
Talks about unnecessary topics during class ALL THE TIME
Guzik never gives stuff back on time. She is a really slow grader and she also is late to every class. She just is all over the place.
Worst professor I have ever had. Spent hours talking about her personal life or small details in the novels or irrelevant info. She thinks she is hilarious. RIDICULOUSLY UNORGANIZED. There was no planning for this course, made it up as she went along. Term paper has very little to do with class content. So frustrating, RUN!
While it's definitely true that Guzik spends a lot of class time regurgitating anecdotes from her own life, she still has an incredible selection for the readings. The course in itself is not difficult to pass, and she gives plenty of opportunity for you to complete work, because she likes to sympathize with the stressful life of the student.
I had her for 270A and ENG380and I really like her. She keeps me awake during her class because she is entertaining. Her personal stories helped me relate to the reading and remember them better when it came time for quizzes and tests. She is disorganized but tries to keep instruction clear for students. She is so nice and helpful. Would recommend.
The worst professor ever. DO NOT TAKE HER. She is super unorganized, did not give me back any of my essays until like two days before the final draft was due. She does not write anything positive about your paper. Do not take her. She is absolutely horrible. DO NOT.
Unprepared, disorganized, and utterly infuriating are words that come to mind when describing this professor. She not only gets distracted, veers off topic and wastes class time, she also doesn't respond back to emails, uses dozens of excuses to delay every assignment, bribes the class with pastries during evaluation... By far the worst prof in csu
Enjoyable class. She gave students a wide variety of texts to read, but she did not discuss them in-depth due to mismanagement of her time. For a writing intensive course, not too challenging. She had reading response journals, but only 6 were turned in for the whole semester (postpones due dates). The midterm/final are open book, internet,& notes.
A brilliant and kind woman but terminally scatter-brained. Barely discusses the texts she assigns. Often forgets to open dropboxes on time, constantly pushes back due dates. Very flexible to make up for her forgetfullness. Frustrating, but fun class and an easy A.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! SHE IS VERY UNORGANIZED. SHE TAKES FOREVER TO GIVE BACK THE PAPERS. SHE IS VERY VERY VERY VERY HARD GRADER.
Not accessible outside of class! Really bad at responding emails, grading papers back on time! She is nice during office hours but its hard to get ahead of the work when you don't receive feedback in a timely manner! Her lectures are all over the place and never to the point.
To date this has been my favorite class ever at CSULB. She is very unorganized but we get the work done without over complicating the assignments.
Though very unorganized, she is very caring and smart about there subject. She has 3 exams and 2 essays for this class. If you want an easy class this is it. Just read the required assignment and you should be fine. Heads up she is hard to access outside of class, takes forever to email back
It's an easy "A". She's a real sweetheart. Goes off topic sometimes though but she's not boring. Assigns interesting, easy to access literature. If you like to read and are a fairly decent writer this course should be a breeze for you. Attendance not mandatory yet she always takes roll! Recommended!
Professor Guzik is incredibly knowledgeable and gives the most interesting lectures. The course assigned a ton of reading but 90% of the novels assigned were excellent choices made by professor Guzik. Her class was a great learning experience and she was very understanding and flexible with the work load. Highly recomended
I took her this semester, she is okay honestly. Will she be your favorite professor? No. Will you take her again? No. But it is not the end of the world if you end up in her class, she is just really disorganized and you my as well throw the syllabus away the first day of class. However, she is lenient because of her nature.
Professor Guzik is really nice and funny at times, but she can get off topic a lot during class time. She does take attendance, but it isn't really necessary to go. Only 3 papers and 1 final. Class is fairly easy to pass.
One of the worst professors in CSULB. She gives back graded assignments two months later. She makes the essay seem more difficult than rocket science. She makes the portfolio due after finals and still uploads the dropbox 1 day before grades are due. She is very unorganized and she does not follow what she says. Avoid her as much as possible.
She is available for office hours and sometimes cancels, but never responds to emails. Throughout this semester, she has been disorganized and pushed many assignments together in the last three weeks of school. She tends to go on tangents and has not posted ANY grades. She even wants us to calculate our own grades and grade our own research paper!
Not a lot of work until the end of the semester when she expects you to do a semesters worth of work in a couple of days because she procrastinated on giving out assignments.
Incredibly unorganized. It is week 14 and we havent had a graded assignment returned to us. Her procrastination has resulted in the entire semesters workload pushed to the last three weeks. Have zero idea what my grade could be. It is honestly insulting that I paid money for this class. Avoid her classes.
She is a great and caring professor but she is so disorganized. She did not grade any assignments throughout the semester and didn't even post the syllabus until week 7. No one in the class ever had any idea what was going on. She had excuses every week for why she couldn't grade assigments and respond to emails.
As mentioned, she is a caring professor, however, as an actual teacher, she is pretty terrible. Goes off on tangents for entire classes, does little to actually teach the material, and is impossible to access outside of class. She did not grade a single assignment for any of our class, and many final assignments required feedback to pass. Avoid.
As mentioned, she is a caring professor, however, as an actual teacher, she is pretty nice. Stays on tangents for entire classes, does lots to actually teach the material, and is possible to access outside of class. She did grade all assignments for our class, and many final assignments required easy feedback to pass. Take.
Shes a really funny and sweet person, but was severely lacking as a professor. I will say she graded easily but I cant really say I actually learned anything from this course. She didnt ever talk about readings and there was no clear syllabus or schedule. Everyone was constantly confused and on their own. Never got a grade or feedback in class.
I do not recommend taking her class. I have NEVER had a professor be this disorganized in my entire academic career. She is nice but we never got feedback or grades for most of our assignments. I and others went an entire semester without knowing how we were doing in class. I and other would email her but there was never a response. Thank U, Next
The professor teaching an ETHNIC WRITERS course is 1) white and 2) wastes class time to either talk about herself or do MLA workshops (yep! basic English workshops). I'm beyond upset that the course dedicated to Ethnic writers is just wasted. People learn MLA in English 101!!! Give Ethnic writers their deserved time!! I'm appalled this is allowed.
In week 6 she finally released the syllabus- that in itself says a lot. She has no organization & goes off on redundant tangents. The student can make any comment & the prof will pick out one tiny detail and go off on an "aactually" rant that never adds to the class. She's immature & awful at teaching. I have no idea how she is able to teach.
Steer clear of this teacher. Incredibly self-serving, a disorganized mess, has incredibly stringent prompts, gave us due dates when the semester was done. Horrible, Horrible, Horrible. Worst professor ever.
This is the most disorganized class that I have ever taken! All students are constantly confused regarding due dates and assignments. She seems like a sweet lady but that doesn't excuse her lack of organization/focus for this course or her lack of response to student's concerns through email. Do yourself a favor and DONOT take a class with her!!!
It boggles my mind how CSULB has continued to let this woman teach at the university. Every negative review is true. She is so disorganized. Shell say shell do something, fail to do so, and will always have an excuse for why she didnt do it. The syllabus wasnt posted until mid-semester because of reasons. By far the worst professor I've had.
She's a nice professor but very scattered. In her defense this was during COVID and maybe she's a better in-person professor, hard to make out what she wanted for assignments because she was scattered. Did not receive a grade at all until my posted grade. Grateful it was an A because I was unsure of how I did with no feedback.
we're back in person, it's week 5 and we are STILL going over the syllabus. she talks about literally everything EXCEPT our course material. she fails to stay on track and goes off-topic A LOT. literally, wasting my time and my colleague's time. believe all the other reviews below and do not take her.
very nice lady but I did not learn a single thing about u.s. ethnic writers. she took an extremely long time to provide important information to the class like the syllabus (took 5 weeks), didn't open dropboxes for assignments on time, class often consisted of long tangents that is not related to class. do not take this professor.
I've had many professor, but no one like professor Guzik, in a bad sense. Procrastinates hard with almost every assignment, grade or dropbox. Always has an excuse why she didn't do something. No feedback. Goes into tangents for much of our class time. In summanry, DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER.
Guzik: -is disorganized -didn't release syllabus until week 4 -didn't ever get Canvas up properly, but had it somewhat up at week 8 -never gave a class schedule -lectures/rants about unimportant information constantly -is not familiar with her teaching materials Do not take this teacher. I've been suffering all semester.
This class is extremely disorganized! The syllabus wasn't finalized until multiple weeks into the course (It was literally 20 pages long), grades are not posted online, and the schedule frequently changes with no notice. We were assigned a paper that is due AFTER final exams are over. I feel like I learned nothing from this class. Waste of time.
Do not take this professor!! She's disorganized, her lectures are unclear and go off on LONG tangents, she spends a lot of time just talking about herself, she never put up the class Canvas for the whole semester. If you do take this class, don't stress about taking it too seriously, because it's clear that she doesn't.
I feel bad that ratings are awful. Yes, she was unorganized this semester/ didn't follow the syllabus. I still managed to have a decent grade in this class (I think I did) Pop quizzes (usually every 6 authors), midterm, and final. She assigns other assignments but didn't get to those. If you don't mind unorganized, take her ): she's very nice
Guzik is funny and caring, but not a very adept professor. We haven't gotten our midterm grade(s) back despite the semester being over aside from finals. She was constantly late, super disorganized, got off on *CONSTANT* unrelated tangents, and didn't know how to use Canvas. She's not difficult, but the class is stressful because of how lax she is.
Nice & understanding person, 1-2 assignments, heavy on reading. Busy person - affects her students. Finals were today & midterm grades were given last night. Busy schedule = lag of grading. Paper due 3 days before the actual semester ends (after finals) due to it being constantly pushed back. Comments below are true. Take class at your own will.
Professor Guzik was the most disorganized teacher I have ever had. She continually forgot due dates and to post materials and drop boxes. She also hardly talked about the actual material in the class. The syllabus was given in week five, and canvas not until week eight. She is a very kind person, but not a good teacher.
She goes on tangents CONSTANTLY and its a 50/50 of wether or not she has a point related to the class. Very slow grader, was often late. Attendance is kinda required but honestly if it wasn't for quizzes you could skip classes. VERY EASY TO TAKE NAPS IN THIS CLASS. Pretty understanding though and is sometimes funny.
Went on long tangents the entire class period. Lasted two hours and discussed the actual content for about 5-10 minutes without true analysis. You wont truly know your grade until the end of the semester because there is no virtual way of checking grades because she does not input it. I got A+s on all the quizzes, missed one and still got a B. 0/10
Quite disorganized, she runs late and doesn't stick to the syllabus. She does work with you as I didn't attend a large chunk of the class and still got an A. I wouldn't take her again due to her tangents and tendency to slack on grading. I didn't know my grade all semester.
This class felt like a waste of time and money! Would go on rants instead of discussing the reading material. Quizzes are given once every two weeks on average, and they're usually FRQ. Her midterms are also very easy, as they are open notebook in a computer lab. Don't recommend the class, but if you want an easy A then just go for it.
Guzik is one of those teachers that will help you out with whatever you need. Submitted an assignment that did not meet requirements and she let me to resubmit. But we did not have syllabus/Canva until the 5th week, most lectures go way off topic, we end up only discussing a work for 30 mins or so and she's always late. Nice prof but disorganized
I loved Professor Guzik! She's funny and goes with the flow. If you are looking for a super organized professor Guzik is not for you. She is chill and allows students leeway in certain assignments. Even showing up late or absent. She likes to chat more than lecture. She assigned multiple types of literature not just novels, poems, plays...etc.
Despite what others say, I actually loved Professor Guzik. As someone who also has a really hectic schedule outside of school, I could resonate and understand her on a further level. She means well and has a heart of gold, and genuinely cares for her students. Sometimes the lectures get off task, but it makes for an entertaining class. Love her.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! Professor Guzik is so unorganized. She started off by giving us a 20 page syllabus 2 weeks into the semester. We had 3 take home essay and 3 timed in class essays. She assigned the first take home essay in February and we still have not received the grade for it. She is so unorganized.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She is confusing and so disorganized
She's a cool person, but a very organized professor. Her grading system is very complicated, and during class, she will go on multiple tangents that doesn't relate to the readings at all. Easy class, but highly suggest to never take her class till she fixes her time management. Didn't get our grades back on time, and she would show up late to class
Professor Guzik can be disorganized, but she's understanding and funny. Quizzes and exams are relatively easy, though grading can be slow. unstuck study was a big help for studying.
Extremely smart and knows her history. However, I am truly astonished at how she secured the position at this university initially. Although I truly appreciate her as an individual, she is terrible in her professional role. Her class is quiz/tests base, so it can really hurt you if you do bad on them since there is no other assignments.
Professor Guzik is a WONDERFUL, kind, and passionate person, but her class suffers from inconsistent schedules, grading, and pacing. Regular grade updates and better structure would improve it. Her teaching shines when the course finds rhythm, but more consistency is needed to help with disorganization, despite its flexible and manageable nature.
Be prepared to not turn in and not know the assignments until the end of the semester when she decides to have everything due during finals week. She often revises her syllabus and promises to send the revision but often procrastinates. She is open with concerns about the course and is able to modify the assignments due to her disorganization.
Canvas didn't go up until 3/4s through the semester. Constantly goes off topic, constantly late. Assigned a documentary related to one of the assigned books, then decided never to discuss neither the film nor the book in class but still put it on the final exam. Spoke to others who had her for a different class, same issues. AVOID AT ALL COST.
As an individual she is fine, but as a professor she is terrible. She didn't post the canvas page until the semester was half way over. Had us purchase over $200 in textbooks and didn't use any of them. Gave us assignments she never graded and insists on giving a final exam and paper on stuff we've never learned. She's terrible and should be fired.
She has a severe lack of communication with her students and is beyond disorganized. Late to every class, constantly goes off on tangents about her personal life, assigned 5 books but never talked about any of them. She is an incompetent professor who doesn't respect her students, their time, & their money. LISTEN TO OTHERS AND NEVER TAKE HER.
The most disorganized and scatterbrained professor I have ever had. She often goes off-topic into anecdotes about her personal life during class. Ended up having four assignments due during finals week, the only ones, because of her lack of schedule. We are dogs boiling in a hot car. Do NOT take her if you can avoid it!
Professor Guzik is a good person, and is well-versed in her historical knowledge. I feel that she possesses a passion for literature, although she may not be suited for a teaching role. I will stay away from repeating the common comments about her; nonetheless if you have to take her, I wish you the best of luck, passing is attainable.
Our Canvas wasn't created until Week 11. Just do not take her class. Does not teach or respond to emails - and will come up with a million excuses for why she doesn't teach, grade or assign. I commuted 60 minutes to class and every time it felt like a complete waste of my time. Two weeks later and I'm still mad.
Everything that you see in these reviews are either slightly or not at all exaggerated. If you do push through this prof and take her, please tell all your classmates to prepare for the worst. Make sure you get the cheapest rentals available and be ready to do a boatload of nothing most classes. Good luck out there future students
Honestly, she was pretty disorganized. Constantly cancelling classes due to medical reasons. No assignments were created until the last 2 weeks. Took attendance every day just for participation not to be a part of your grade. I could have literally skipped every day and still got an A. At least in the end, she made it easy to get an A.
professor guzik is very unorganized which made me so stressed throughout the whole semester. she never had clear due dates and she's always late to class. her lectures mostly contained of unnecessary stories
Complete waste of time and money. Didn't learn a damn thing, discussed anything assigned, or even got a fragment of feedback on any writing. She constantly canceled class, didn't answer A SINGLE email, and failed to show up to her office hours with ZERO warning. Canvas didn't go up till 1/2 way through the semester. INSANE! WASTE! AVOID HER!!
Tt was a fairly easy class to pass with her. She did have some insightful things to say about our readings during the lectures. However, she tends to be scattered brained during her lectures and often procrastinates on grading until the end. She does offer extra credit on quizzes, and while attendance does matter, she does give you leniency.
Had her for ENGL 320 Grammar...choose another professor if you can. Have to agree with these reviews. She is unorganized, didn't upload the syllabus till the middle of the semester. It's also her first time teaching the class, so the structure of the class changed every other week. Isn't accessible outside of class. Delays grading. Goes off-topic
Literally the worst professor at csulb. She shows up 10-15 minutes late every single class and on week 13 I only have one grade back so I have no idea how I'm doing. I've learned a grand total of zero things this semester as, when she does show up for class, she rambles on about nothing. Grading rubrics are unclear and doesn't respond to emails.
Had her for ENGL320. She constantly contradicts the textbook during her lectures, and whenever we ask her questions, she just says she doesn't know. She uploaded the syllabus really late into the sem and took months to grade our first exam. She will not respond to emails and constantly gives attitude towards students.
Please do not take her, she completely changed the way she graded the course with one week left. Took months to grade papers, doesn't respond to emails, and can't even remember to make assignment drop boxes on canvas. Class sessions are useless except for the fact she'll make a change to an assignment and only mention it on that one day.
She was a lovely person, but her lectures were a waste of time. She'll assign A LOT of reading only to cover a portion of it during the last 40 minutes of class. It's the last week of school, and her gradebook isn't even out, AND she assigned an essay with vague instructions (that haven't even been published yet). Find another teacher if you can.
Every review you see on this professor is 100% true. Do not under circumstance take any of their courses. Wait a semester if you have to so you can get anybody else. Avoid at all costs.
This professor was extremely vague and frustrating to deal with. She waited until last second to grade and post assignments. The entire semester I had no idea what my grade was and she refused to tell us unless we did a very complicated calculation that she would change almost every class. Avoid at all costs to save your sanity.
If she's assigned to your course, drop the class. She's so behind on grading & she almost never answers her emails. She doesn't follow through with what she says in class. "I'll upload the assignment drop box later today" (it's been a week and a half). It took us 3 months to do 2 assignments & the other 3 she had planned were posted yesterday.
Never got a grade for her class because she didn't post any grades for any of her vague assignments. If you're unlucky enough to be assigned to Guzik, please do yourself a favor and push this class back another semester.
My situationship is less messy than this professor
