She is not the best grammar teacher, but she is very nice and willing to help her students. She grades a little hard on the papers, but in the end your writing improves a great deal :)
This prof is another example of bad teaching at school of comm at FIU. She doesn't know anything about grammar, so prepare urself to study on ur own. She gives u a grade and doesn't explain u how to improve ur writing. Ur gonna write papers and receive a grade, that's it, don't expect to improve ur skills whatsoever. She has real serious mental iss
Had her for news reporting and writing. Flexible on due dates, gives real-world assignments. Really wants to see students learn, and lets you learn by doing
Professor Hanly is one of the sweetest professors I've ever had at FIU. She really cares about her students and tries her best to help you improve your writing. Definitely recommend her!
What these people haven't told you yet is that Hanly takes a lot of pride in saying that she has given as many A's as she has given F's throughout her tenure at FIU. Take her if you are up to the challenge, otherwise your average will suffer.
One of the best! She really cares about you and helps you to become a better writer. She is able to see everyone's potential. She is also very helpful and patient to those grammar-impaired. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Be willing to accept her suggestions. She knows what shes talking about.
She is a very nice lady, who makes the writing portion of the course interesting. You write 1 3pg. paper/wk). As an experienced writer, she expects you to meet deadlines & write as though you're inspired. "Teaching" grammar, is like "teaching" multiplication, it's up to the student to study & memorize; there is only so much a teacher can do.

She flunked me although i got the highest grade on the exit exam. She is the reason why I left school for two years, now i'm trying to get a degree in Liberal Studies because of her.
SHE WILL BE TEACHING PUR 4106 TOO!!!!!!!!!!!! She is AMAZING most inspirational teacher truly cares about her students and is EXTREMELY fair with grading/having to turn in a late assign. She is the only reason I got through the grammar exam. Take her, appreciate her, she loves all of her "dear ones." :)
She is great! I took MMC3104 with her. She is not strict or stuck up. She is very nice. I hope I can take more classes with her in the future.
She is the biggest hippy but she is not a bad teacher. She has a journalist perspective on ur papers but thats not a bad thing for PR ppl. She is not a hard grader but you have to try. She is very liniant and sweet. DONT BUY THE BOOK. Complete waste of Money!
As nice as she is smart. Great prof
Great professor in the classroom. But don't ask her for a recommendation letter. I asked politely via email and she said she was stunned that I sent it to her, then ended it with "I won't be writing this letter". Completely shocked me because she was a sweetheart in class and I got an A.
Took her Advanced PR Writing course as an elective for my graduate program. It was my first public relations writing class, and it was fantastic. Prof. Hanly is great at providing feedback and holds in-class assignment critiques. I definitely recommend her as a professor.
If Campaigns wasn't my next class, I would take her again in a heartbeat. She is sharp as a tack and willing to go the extra mile for her students. Loved her!
Prof. Hanly's wonderful! A privilege to be her student - wish I could take another of her classes. Cares for her students shown by the effort put into her lectures & discussions. Always available to help since she wants you to learn & grow. Amazing storyteller. Her hippie ways keep it interesting. Highly recommend Prof. Hanly, won't regret it! :)
Professor Hanly is amazing. She is one of the most amicable professors at FIU. She is also extremely knowledgeable on the subject matter. Highly Recommend.
such a sweet lady and so helpful. she really wants to see her students succeed and truly cares and respects her students. for honors classes, she is a great choice.
She's a hippie at heart and I love that about her. She knows a lot and will teach you the right way to do things. For her CPR project and group project just remember to pick a company that interests you and have fun with it. She's not too strict but you need to do your work right!
Professor Hanly was a joy to have as a teacher. She is very sweet and enjoys a dynamic discussion in class. She provides good feedback and is interested in your success.
Wonderful professor and person! Very understanding, sweet, calm, and enjoys a good philosophical chat. Absolutely love her!
She is amazing there is no other way to put it! She is the best professor I have ever encountered at FIU. Not only does she motivate creativity, but she is very understanding.
Professor Hanly is the best!! I would recommend her to anyone taking Honors Classes (: I am taking her for Third World Film.
BY FAR THE BEST PROFESSOR AT FIU. SO SWEET, AND INTELLIGENT. SHE REALLY PUSHES YOU TO YOUR LIMIT AND HELPS YOU GET THE MOST OF YOUR POTENTIAL. SHE PUSHES YOU TO WORK HARD AND TEACHES YOU ITS OKAY TO BE YOU. HER CLASS WAS LIKE THERAPY FOR ME. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING SOUL.
Professor Hanly is a treasure.I think she hit a homerun when she shared her extensive professional knowledge with writing feature stories. Her writing is beautiful, and the class environment is collaborative. You will share your writing with all of your classmates, so if you're shy about it, you may want another class(or another line of work). Bravo!
Such a sweet, unique woman. She really opens up with you in class and encourages everyone to share their story. She grades so nicely and emails you sweet comments about your essays. Definitely a relaxing class that I always look forward to.
Prof. Hanly is such a kind, intelligent human being. She values everyone's ideas and always has an interesting story to tell. It's impossible to not feel comfortable in her class. To make things even better, she's a very easy grader. Overall an incredible professor.
I don't know who called her easy, but she is great.
Extremely skilled, experienced, intelligent, open-minded. A very well-formed writer and professor who understands their students and knows how to teach effectively. Class attendance is mandatory, always. You won't want to miss it though. You'll do well, if you want to do well. It's a true honor.
Very nice lady love her class!
No. Just no. Seriously. No. Take anyone else.
In the honors college, you should be ready to work hard. This class is not easy. Your effort will reflect your grade. If this class is taken seriously you will gain so much not only in your writing, but also in your ability to dig deeper into your own thought process. Regardless, Professor Hanly is an amazing professor and beyond that individual.
Best professor at FIU. Compassionate too. Wow!
The honors class was pretty much a joke. She would hardly be in class and was unprepared. I don't know how she teaches her normal classes, but for honors I suggest you try to get out... Very biased and flustered.
Great Professor, teaches one how to connect with their writing. By the end of the semester, I truly understood how to write.
Professor Hanly is probably one of the most incredible professors I've ever had the pleasure to study under. Her teaching methods and are beyond compare. She never forces, but encourages each and every student to dig deep and write about what really matters. She is kind, inspirational, and full of wisdom.
Professor Hanly is hands down the best professor I've had in the Honors College. I am not a writer but she has helped me become one. She is extremely inspirational and does everything she can to help her students write to the best of their ability. It is an open space of positive feedback. I am so glad I took this course.
One of the two professors at FIU that I actually learned something from.
This is an intro class fro freshmen. I hated it at first, but Professor Hanly won me over. She's smart, with a wicked sense of humor. A former journalist, she has a lot to say. It's worth listening to. She is also surprisingly kind.
Professor Hanly's film course is amazing. Really opened my eyes up, especially to things that are happening in the Middle-East.
Professor Hanly's film courses are amazing. They truly open your eyes to a lot in the world you would have never known about. Some of these movies we watch are bit hard to swallow but this class changed me as a person for the better. I wish I could take this class over and over again! :)
Hanly is great!! she makes you work hard for your grade but she also cares for you if you show some effort. I took Third World Cinema with her and you should expect to do a movie review of about 300-500 words and an end of term paper or a group project. She takes class participation EXTREMELY serious and will call you out if you don't participate
Never hard a professor who I could trust like this one.
I took Miami Stories because I wanted to upgrade my writing. By the end of just one semester I knew how to write a story that I could tell was good. This lady is great. Loved the class.
Being in her class was one of my best experiences at FIU. I loved her candidness, her passion and her support of creative writing. Even when I did not actively participate, I always felt engaged in class because of the questions you posed. I almost always left class pondering the subject matter we discussed.
Hanly is amazing. She's smart. She cares about her students. She even carries a shawl in case anybody get cold. But push her too far, watch out
Best professor at FIU
Teaches important lessons and leaves her students the gift of writing.
Took her online film class. Films were the best, and I wouldn't have known about them. Thought the course would be easy. I had no idea I'd be asked to think this much. It felt great. One of the best professors at FIU. She's very present to her students even online. She leaves lots and lots of comments on our postings. Give yourself a treat.
Amazing films in Hanly's online film class. Each week I didn't think they could get any better., but they did. This lady is smart. The best I've had at Honors, even online. She was all the time posting interesting stuff on the group page. Her feedback was great too.
I never thought I could learn so much from movies. Two thumbs up
Best online course at Honors. Every film (except one) was great. So were her class notes and feedback. Highly recommend
Wow!! What an amazing professor and human being. Currently taking her creative non fiction writing class and I have never experienced such a beautiful classroom dynamic before. Get ready to get personal. Sometimes theres tears but theres always laughter. Hanly is a blessing and she truly cares about her students. Take her, you wont regret.
I'm graduating in a few months. Professor Hanly is the best professor I have had at FIU. She is super-smart and super-kind. No other professor has offered to help me with internships and career plans along with truly helpful critiques of my writing. She believes in her students and gives of herself. Wow.
Elizabeth Hanly is a kind professor that definitely cares for her students. I never thought I would have go so in-depth in analyzing films that I would have never watched on my own. I am not the best writer so I struggled with most posts but her feedback was great. I enjoyed a majority of the films assigned, but did not so much enjoy this course.
i took her online film class and her assignments are simple enough but if you have an opinion different to hers she will penalize you for it. she gets very offended by any written work that opposes her own views and its a shame :/
She's a horrible grader and will call you out and her grading criteria is horrible. Don't look at her past ratings, she's not what they say she is.
Taking this class was the worst decision I've ever made. This class entails watching 2-3 hr movie per WEEK. Professor Hanly is crude and hostile towards her students, providing little to no feedback on posts. Grades are through facebook likes? You never know what you'll have in the class. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Not the hardest class but not an easy A. Does not show care for student development and is unwilling to support students who wish to get feedback.
Smart but also snarky. Won't really know what you have in the class till the end of it
She's incredibly knowledgable and smart and will provide feedback on your weekly postings, however shes incredibly rude, snarky and sarcastic with her students. Her class is definitely not an easy A, you have to watch all the films and really analyze them and structure your postings in a very specific way. You'll also never know what grade you have
Too much work, weekly 3 hours movies and then you need to make comments
Professor Hanly was the best teacher I ever had. Her film class is wonderful. The films are powerful, educational and eye-opening. All you have to do is post about it after watching, and make three comments on others posts. The posts are not difficult, all she wants is thoughtful and honest reviews. If you try in this class, you will get an A.
Great teacher. Some of these posts are not accurate at all. Your grade is clear based on her feedback to your post. You watch a movie, which you have a WEEK to watch and then write about it. You can have whatever opinion you want, if you explain yourself, she will not take marks away. I have found new favorite movies because of this course.
Professor Hanly is a wonderful professor who truly cares about her students. She doesn't normally follow a syllabus but since most of her classes are discussion based, this is not an issue. She also has decades of experience and is a phenomenal mentor. Basically, if you do the work and participate, her classes are worthwhile and easy.
Prof. Hanly's creative writing class is the BEST class I have ever taken. She is very kind and she cares for her students in and outside of the classroom. The way she embraces everyone is simply amazing. She understands her students and she is great at giving feedback. TAKE HER! You will not regret it. Do the work & participate and you will pass.
Professor Hanly is caring, intelligent, and great professor. I took her Whats going on course and I genuinely looked forward to coming to class every week to discuss current events, despite it being at night and 3 hours long. Her class is not difficult, you just have to watch a frontline every week, write notes on it, and discuss it in class.
Professor Hanly is easily the best professor I have taken a course with. Her course is FIU's hidden gem. No matter your writing level at the beginning of the course, you WILL improve significantly. She is genuine, caring, and fair. Hanly responds quickly to emails, gives great feedback, and acts as a guide through your writing journey. Take her!!
Great teacher, took her for two semesters. She really cares for the students and has a very clear grading criteria. Honestly, I'm really happy that I was able to take a class with her. She was one of the best teachers I've had at FIU. The class consisted of submitting a minimum of 2-3 page paper every two weeks.
I took her creative nonfiction writing class. She listens intently to what everyone writes and offers helpful feedback for your work. She is also really caring and understanding and wants all of her students to embrace their written voices. I'm so glad I took this class, I've become a better writer because of it.
After taking Professor Hanly for our Frontline Honors course, I can say, without a doubt, it was an eye-opener to issues happening both domestically and globally. Professor Hanly was respectable and knew the material. Prepare to read current news articles weekly and write small report summaries of 1-2 hour long documentaries per week.
My favorite Honors Professor! Professor Hanly cares so much about her students and is just a gem of a human being. If you show up and are present in class you will get so much out if it. Take her!! Easy A if you turn in the assignments
This class is interesting and very straight forward. Prof Hanly has the grading criteria and assignments organized in a very simple way. She is also a very quick grader so it helps you to stay on top of your work! Great Class!
Prof Hanly is incredibly sweet and caring. I took her Oral History class and got so much out of it. She always created a welcoming and supportive environment. I truly feel like my writing has improved a lot thanks to her. Easy A as long as you turn in the assignments and revise them before turning in the final draft.
Absolutely fantastic professor. Probably my favorite professor I have had at FIU. Took the class online on zoom and she still managed to make the class feel engaging. Each week she assigned amazingly thought provoking documentaries that we would discuss in class. Also had us pick a news source and take turns each week seeing different perspectives.
Best professor and class I've ever taken. This is a lovely environment that you'll want to stay in. The papers go deeper and deeper until you, your classmates, and professor and neither of those roles anymore. You are now friends. Wonderful professor, the most sweet person. The people you meet in this class care for you and help you out out of clas
Took for What’s Going On? Every week you watch documentaries and summarize them. You also summarize news articles in a podcast/audio format. She expects a lot from you, so keep that in mind. Make sure to read ALL instructions because she asks for specific things and catches when you don’t do them.
did this in the summer. 2 papers on movies each week. pretty easy and she's very nice
Do not take her! She is very bad, especially the final project for the class (35% of grade). I followed all the directions from the project description and was graded unfairly because she said further instructions were provided through an email, which I did not receive. In her messages to me she said things like "good luck in the real world."
BEST PROFESSOR AT FIU!!! She is the most caring professor ever. Her class is super interesting. Take her!
THIS PROFESSOR IS TERRIBLE! She's super rude in her email responses to students. I read her rmp reviews before taking her class and they did me so dirty. I want to spare you the stress. Do not take her! She also grades harshly, her assignment instructions are not very clear, and she makes you write a lot of papers throughout the semester.
Horrible and pretentious
I took her for Non Fiction Writing & Oral Histories. I had fun with the assignments. I felt comfortable sharing personal stories in the group. I grew as a writer. I grew as an editor (we critique each other too). She can be passionate about the class, which can come off strong- if this is her greatest flaw then what a gift it is to be her student.
Professor Hanly was absolutely amazing. Took her during Summer B. She did give a lot of homework and you had to watch movies, one of which you had to rent on your own. But it was genuinely such an interesting class that she's very interested in teaching and she's very kind. If you like writing and are good at it, I definitely recommend.
Super patient and understanding. The rubrics are clear - you just have to actually take time to do the assignment. The films are.. films.. so its time consuming to watch, so give yourself at least 2-3 hours ONE DAY a week to do ALL homework + viewings.
Do not take this professor. She is extremely rude through email when I was respectful in every word I wrote. She is condescending and will not treat you with the basic human respect that you deserve as a student. If you care about your GPA and being treated like a human being, do not take her.
