She is awesome...one of the coolest teachers ever. Her class is not easy but it is loads of fun!!! She is HOTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting Class that is worth taking. She is very knowldgeable about every current issue you can think of. Show up for a good grade. Only need book for a couple things. Take home final
I never knew how fun speaking in front of a class was until I took Comm 20 with Harris. She's pretty good looking for her age. If you want to ask her out, you'll find her outside HGH on her smoking breaks. She's married though.
Made public speaking fun. Just go to class and the A will follow.
You will learn a lot from this class. After you're done, you will be a decent public speaker. Do your stuff, go to class, and you'll get a good grade.
Liz is an excellent teacher.. her jokes are kinda dry, but she makes public speaking fun. She video tapes every speech (there are 5 of them) and the midterm is way easy.. She does count a lot of your grade on attendance, so if youre willing to show up, expect a good grade.
She is a great teacher. After taking this fun class, your comm. skills and even your thesis writing skills will be greatly enhanced . she's cool but sometimes it seems like she's on crack or caffiene or something?
i'm not a good public speaker but she made me feel comfortable in the class. I end up with a B+ just go to class everytime and you will do well... there's no doubt...take her:)
A very good teacher. She makes sure everyone understands the class and lets you redo assingments if you get a bad grade. It's an easy and fun class. I recommend this teacher if you have to take a communications class.
It sucked having this class so early in the morning, good thing she's a morning person. She made the class fun. Attendance counts!
She says it on the first day of class: She works you more than any other comm20 prof. Ain't that the truth. 5 speeches and a radio PSA that is recorded by YOU at the sjsu studio. Have fun.
Never sight reads, and only play 4 songs a semester, that is not up to college standards!
I did not want to take this class, but I am definitely happy I took it with her. She is super nice and the class was easy. I hate speaking in front of the class, but the speeches were a breeze. I got 8 units out of this 3 unit class bc she offers so many extra opportunities. She is a great teacher and loves what she is teaching.
Liz was a fun teacher, a happy lady, positive. If you come to class, participate and can do good research for your debates; you can do well in this class. The on-air redio debate was a fun project.
Very Nice and upbeat. Really helpful with outline which makes the sppeches easier. She also makes you feel pretty comfortable about speaking in front of her. a little crazy at times but usually funny
Professor Harris is very laid back and welcoming. She is an easy grader and tells you exactly what she expects and how to improve.
kinda creepy but very cool. she has the perfect personality to teach public speaking. highly reccommend her.
If you come to class and follow directions you will do good. The radio debate was fun and she gives you the opportunity to get get credit for comm 80 and rtvf192.
She is probably the best comm. teacher in the whole department, hella CHILL and LAID BACK, you can turn in late papers til the last day of finals...she's funny and never really get mad at anything...and she cares a lot about your speeches which is cool, and she allows you to get extra units just for particpating in something things
she is really not good teacher. She is horrible. If you ask a questen then she want to show that she is very busy.
pretty laid back class, changed around the green sheet a lot. she makes the class answer a question on each chapter of the book. all in all pretty easy class
Although I hate speaking in front of class she makes the class fun and interesting.. She is not hard and is there to answer any questions students might have... Take her class... it's worth it..
I totally love her class. She makes everything sinple and clear, so that everyone doesn't have to study much, but still gets important points. I came to see her during her office hour and she helped me a lot. If you want to have fun and learn sth interesting, take her class.
Very laid back class, few assignments. She is very entertaining and fun. Overall a fun class, other than talking in front of the class
She picks favorites. Be cautious if you are not on her good side. She can be harsh to a fault. Take another, more laidback pub speaking teacher if possible.
I had her for the Spring 2008 semester. At first I thought she was crazy but then later on, you realize that it's just her awesome personality. Go to class, she surprised us a few times with some extra credit/points just for going to class. Also, if you go to class you'll get to experience her weird sense of humor. It was a definite easy A.
very weird but entertaining..TAKE THIS CLASS it starts off as a 3 unit class but you can get 9 units out of it by doing about 5 hours of extra work for the whole semester..easy a and easy credits
She has a very different sense of humor but is very entertaining. I took this class to get out of public speaking but It ended up being harder and I loved it. Just show up for class and seem interested and it'll be a breeze.
The class is a ton of work but it is all fairly easy if you follow her instructions and the book. Oh the class is also 9 units after you add in all the extra stuff she wants from you. She is extremely helpful at giving you ways to strengthen your arguments. Also the final is only 5 questions. One of the best teachers I had during my undergrad work.
YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS CLASS. harris is weird, her jokes suck, and she constantly tries to be funny. BUT she makes this class 9 units for easy work as long as you get it done. theres a lot of small, daily assignments but if you do them and regularly attend class.. i guarantee an A. worked for me! you may as well for 9 units and you need it for GE!:)
We didn't use the tape recorder much. This class helped me improve my public speaking and debating skills. You sign up for 9 units for the comm lab, radio talk, and debate competition. She wasn't strict and accepted late work.
if you want to spend 70% of your time listneing to other people give their speeaches, then take this class. other than that, this class is super easy. your attendence starts counting near the end of the year, but when u alrady gave ur speech no point of going to class.
Really great teacher
I hate public speaking. But I loved this class! She is the best!
She is not the easiest teacher but if you really want to learn a lot about public speaking, TAKE HER! I am terrified of public speaking, and I am more confident now thanks to her class. No matter what happens, just try to get this class, you will be glad you did
She's a really nice teacher with an =sense of humor (makes you feel like youre on the Jungle Cruise). You will never be bored going into her class, that's for sure. Her grading is fair and gives you helpful input on what could be done to improve. You don't have to be a confident speaker going into her class. Overall, she's a really good teacher.
Harris is the worst public speaking professor at SJSU. She is very unprofessional, rude and disrespectful towards other people's opinions. DO NOT TAKE HER! She will make inappropriate facial expressions every time you make speech. If you do not share the same opinion as you she WILL dislike you and downgrade you.
She should not be teaching. After her surgery her mood swings are terrible. If she doesn't like you, or your topic she will grade your speech unfairly. Do not recommend taking her class.
I had this class early in the morning- when no one wants to debate, and you know what she does? Randomly screams to wake the class up. If that's not a fun teacher I don't know what is. Debate topics are plentiful and easy, it's an all right class.
Quirky lady! She always has something witty to say to the class. I barely knew what I was doing half the time, but she's not a hard grader. Most of the time you can do the research the night before and totally be okay for the speech the next day.
She literally has so much prior knowledge about any given global topic. She's so hilarious and sarcastic, which is great. Definitely read the book to help you with outlines to speeches. She teaches you how to get out of your comfort zone and really learn to argue effectively. One of my favorite professors by far!
Her class is easy, well argument class is. Speeches can be made last minute and you'll still get a B. It's mostly easy debates and listening to others debate. I recommend!!!
She's a pretty fun professor. She knows a lot about current issues that is happening. Also her class is pretty easy. There's 5 quizzes which are done open book in groups. The debates are kinda hard. She grades pretty tough. On the last week of school she assigns extra credit for showing up to class.
Easy class if you do the effort (which isn't a lot imo). She's judgmental when it comes to what topic you choose for the last speech. Sometimes she doesn't tell the class what else should be included in the speeches- meaning she knocks off points if you don't have it. Make sure to show up to class to get easy points.
Really funny, but several downsides. Beware of the online quizzes, they are pretty hard. The directions for some assignments are not very clear, **always** check the syllabus/canvas for more information. Always show up early/on time or else you'll be marked down.
Loved this teacher, she actually cared about her students. I would come into her class and I knew I was going to laugh atleast one time before I left. She has a very good sense of humor and it really helped me when I was going through my first year at SJSU.
Took this class at Mission College to transfer on Friday's. She's great, keeps the class entertained with great feedback. There's a lot to learn from her.
I recommend anyone taking her class to participate in the Debate Tournament if you are given the opportunity -- You get to skip the final! Harris is overall fairly easy. You just need to know how to write an outline properly, and she is willing to help. She treats you like a student, not going to try to baby you. Easy class, just do the work!
Show up, participate, and pass. Professor Harris is SUCH AN EASY AND FUN teacher. She has so much passion for what she does, and it has a major impact on students. If you fear public speaking, do not worry, she will definitely help bring you out of your shell.
This professor was probably my favorite of all time. She is funny and understanding. She communicates what she expects from you very well. Her quizzes are easy if you do the reading and take some notes. The homework is also simple. If you go to class and do all of your work, you will get an A. She even accepts late work occasionally. She is a gem.
For a communication teacher, does not communicate well whatsoever. Grades extremely harsh. You don't need the textbook at all. Weekly quizzes can easily be done without it. Only good feedback on speech rubrics, other than that you're on your own. Don't expect clear explanation if you're wondering why you got a specific grade, she won't be upfront
The most unorganized class I have ever been in. She just topples up speeches over speeches without any clear instructions or lessons. The online quizzes have nothing to do with her class; they are just tedious and irritating. She has specific things that she looks for in speeches, but never mentions it, & if you don't have it, you get docked points
Honestly I have never had a professor that was so unorganized. On multiple occasions she entered my turned in work in as a "0", at one point, an assignment I received a 5/5 on in the beginning of the semester was changed more than halfway through to a 0/5? Never taking her again, she is unapproachable, rude to her students & isn't responsible.
She's always so happy and excited !! If you have a morning class with her, she will make you awake, she is always so awake. Speeches are easy and fun, she has a blast listening to all of them! Just make sure you follow the topic/rules for each speech. (STAY ON TOP OF ONLINE HOMEWORK AND QUIZZES !)
She is a very nice person, but grading criteria for speeches can be unclear. I personally found myself working for 10+ hours on speeches and getting undesired grades. Don't skip class, she will notice. 4 speeches in class total + online homework and a 30-second long recording are the assignments.
She seems tough at first, and is very honest. She's witty and sarcastic, and her class honestly isn't hard. Debates and speeches can be done the night before without too much trouble. Just go to class and have something to say when called on! Highly reccomend
I had this class once a week there are 4 speeches and 1 group PSA the final is online and is a reflection. Almost ever week there is a homework assignment along with a quiz from a chapter in the book but they were very easy.
Excellent professor! Took her back in 2017 and was very helpful if you didnt understand something.
Professor Harris is a ball of energy and makes class interesting. I was deathly afraid of public speaking until I took her class. She is clear in her grading and gives you many opportunities to correct work if needed. Take her class!
Useless class.
While Harris is loud and talkative, she is far from the energetic ball of fluff people talk about. Her TA is weird and unhelpful, and her descriptions of assignments are vague/general that makes it difficult to understand. Docks off points for minor details, and overall not a fun teacher to be around. Kept counting the minutes to end class.
We did 4 speeches, a PSA, online quizzes, homework, and an online reflection essay final. Gives vague speech assignment directions and then takes off points for the smallest things. Gives full credit on everything else as long as you turn it in. You only need to skim the reading to do well on quizzes (can usually find the answers online).
Uses the same rubric for each speech, but never specifies what she expects. When she did lecture once, her notes were disorganized. Ask her a question and she will be sarcastic or direct you to her TA. If she doesnt agree with your speech, she will show it. Her so-called jokes are often rude and she seems to not understand when to stop talking.
She comes across as very rude but when it comes to speeches shes fairly understanding and nice about it. Isn't too tough of a grader, has some really easy homework assignments.
Personally, I thought this class was unnecessarily difficult for a GE, and regretted not taking a regular speech class the entire semester. Signing up for this class is signing up for lots of work and research that you could've saved yourself with a different comm class. Prof is ok, gives extremely vague instructions and offers little to no help
She started off seeming kinda rude but grew on everyone throughout the year. She is huge on respect so if you respect her she will respect you. Before we went online, she gave great feedback on certain things. Dont fall behind on her homework and quizzes. I barley ever read the textbook and got an A so I thought it was pretty easy.
She is vague on assignments and presentation criteria and does not clearly explain the expectations that she wants from our presentations. She is a strict grader and deducts points off of little things here and there. This course is not difficult, but I think the professor makes it harder than it is.
Not the best professor when it comes to grading and teaching. She is a strict grader and makes you do extra work for your grade. My actual English papers are easier than her short writing assignments, which says a lot about her grading. She wants us to be specific in our writing, but she isn't specific herself.
The class consists of 4 speeches, weekly hw assignments, and weekly quizzes. The hw takes 20 mins and the quizzes are 10 T/F questions that should be easy if you do the textbook reading. As for the speeches, the grading criteria is vague and feedback is lackluster but the grading is fair overall. She is nice and responds to emails quickly.
She is dismissive in emails, does not communicate to students. She is rude and disrespectful in email responses. A lot of insignificant busy work. Other teachers are better to take. Deducts points with no explanation on assignments. She is vague. Don't bother emailing her for help she wont explain to you. Expect a 2-3 word response. Avoid her.
I don't understand how a professor can be in communications when they can't properly communicate with students. She gives vague and short responses when you have questions, and does not have a clear grading criteria when it comes to her speeches. I never knew what I had to work on because she does not provide relevant feedback.
Grades fairly on speeches. Weekly HW and quizzes were easy (usually graded on completion). However, I dislike how she delivers instructions. Gives poor feedback. Everything is so vague. Replies fast to questions but don't mean they helped. I relied on her TA to get my questions answered. I got an A but it was just so annoying to get thru.
For the most part, Harris' class is super easy if u put in the work and effort. Her teaching itself tho, is terrible. For a comms teacher, she's not good at explaining assignments/giving directions and some of her jokes are kinda obnoxious. But fortunately, this being an easy class and all, assignments are pretty straightforward most of the time.
If you need to take COMM for a GE, DO NOT take this professor. COMM Is supposed to be an easy class but she makes it 10x harder than it is supposed to be. Her instructions for speeches and outlines are extremely vague and she isn't helpful at all. She only relies on peer mentors to help you. She may be goofy and funny but that takes a dark turn.
The class consists of 4 speeches and 1 PSA group recording. It's a public speaking class and I thought it would be easy but she makes it so hard. She's really vague with her critiques and I don't understand what I'm supposed to improve on. There are times where she would call out people so that was awkward.
Professor Harris is really funny and made the class more enjoyable. Although you may be stressed with the amount of research you do for debates, it's not that bad. She mostly grades on how much progress you've made throughout the semester. The final isn't really a final if you sign up for a debate contest carried out at the university.
Her class is pretty bearable. She occasionally has vague outlines for what she expects from you but it is not difficult to understand what she probably wants you to do. She expects you to make an outline for each speech which seems tedious to begin with, but is actually really helpful when giving the speech because you can just read it back.
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!!!! I do not recommend taking this course with Elizabeth Harris. She is not specific with her grading criteria and replies with one word responses when you email her. I HAD TO WORK so much harder for this course compared to my ADVANCED courses that are actually important-.-
Ironic that she is a communications professor because she does not communicate well with her students. Very disappointed whenever I emailed her about anything because she never gave a proper/helpful response. The TA helped more than the professor.
The work was manageable, but the professor made the class very unenjoyable. She has a strict grading criteria and docks off points here and there if you do not satisfy what she wants. As a communications professor, I would expect her to throughly respond to questions, but she replies with very rude and short responses.
Show up to class, take good notes, pay attention, follow directions, and put in high-quality effort. At times her instructions are not clear, so go to her office hours and get your doubts clarified. As long as you follow these simple tips, you should get an A+. You don't have to give perfect speeches but try your best. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!!
Overall she is a great professor and Ive learned a lot from her class. She is vague, which can be frustrating but, just look at the modules, show up, take advantage of peer mentor and office hours; youll do fine. She gives great feedback and grades based on your progression. She is lenient, I was absent for speech day but remake it 4 full credit
The professor was terrible at giving directions and instructions on assignments. She wanted things one way and didn't tell you exactly how to do it. She didn't give outlines or anything and expects you to know what she wants. She does answer questions but still doesn't give the proper answers to what she expects. Please dont take this professor.
Anyone complaining about her obviously didn't pay attention in class. She will spend a whole class period going over mistakes people make. She is nice and will explain everything you can improve for next time. It's a Comm class, if you have a question communicate it
Funny professor and a pleasure to be in her class, but the amount of work for a simple GE was borderline unbearable. If you miss a speech, sometimes she will not let you make it up and same for a lot of other assignments. Loved the Speakfest-no final option though.
very unclear instructions for assignments and speeches, lots of undated assignments (which you will likely forget to do), and strict grading
She is nice. Beware that her outlines must be a specific structure otherwise you will completely miss the points for that. This isn't lecture heavy, its hands-on debating. She's generous with her grading as long as you show an effort.
Professor Harris is kind and answers all questions you may have. However, she doesn't have clear grading criteria. The descriptions of her assignments are very vague, and she wants things in a certain way. She's a tough grader, but the workload of the class is reasonable. As long as you show up and pay attention, you'll be fine.
My main gripe with this class was that it was selected for me at 7:30 am because of my major and I had to deal with public speaking in the morning. Her energetic attitude this early ticked me off so much, but overall she's a decent professor. She did have slight issues with grading I've heard, and the subject is okay. She's retiring soon though
Shes witty and sarcastic. Somewhat easy grader but her sarcasm can be rude sometimes. Shes alright.
Professor Elizabeth is so kind and caring. She gives good feedback and makes you feel like your education matters. A few public speaking projects but very a very helpful skill. Some rough draft and easy papers. Taking notes is easy in this course.
A lot of speeches and need to write an online for each speech. There are some homework assignments on the weekends online but take like 10-15 min. Chill prof doesn't take attendance would recommend.
