She is very helpful in lecture and with any homework help. I would strongly recomend taking her class. She explains concepts very clear and makes it easy to understand.
She is friendly and is more than willing to help. She responds to emails fast and is pretty fair. Her lectures are clear, but we usually waisted a lot of time talking about things that didn't pertain to math. Her tests are hard! I usually spent more than 2 hrs at the Testing Center. She grades critically. So a great effort needs to be put in.
BEST MATH TEACHER AT ASU!!! I had her for two semesters of math and I loved every minute of it!!! She is by far the nicest person and the best teacher- always willing to help students and such a down to earth woman!! LOVE HER!
Jones is a great teacher that is really helpful and good at explaining concepts. The class itself is incredibly easy!!! She goes over any questions about the homework the morning that it is due so that it is pretty much impossible to get any homework problems incorrect. Tests are easy. Good class to get your math credit over with.
She is an amazing teacher! The class was so easy and she is very helpful. She makes the material very understandable and the test are really easy!
This class is EXTREMELY easy. It is pretty much impossible not to get an A in this class if you are trying. Mrs. Jones is very nice, very approachable, and overall very helpful. I recommend not opening the book until you see if you need it or not. I didn't use the book at all, but I opened it and now I can't return it.
I hate to say it but I was not a huge fan.Although she's helpful and easy to talk to,her class policies and notes are ridiculous. My class had a mand. attendance policy yet going to class was pretty much not important because her lectures were hard to follow and dragged on beyond belief. She spoon feeds you,not my style.Dont buy the book.
Good teacher and VERY helpful. The homework is the most important thing, its worth a lot, and if you understand it, then you will ace the test. If you need 142 credit, take it with her. I 'suck' at Math and got an A.
Very helpful and understanding. Will email you back if you have questions on the homework or about class in general.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am an honors student and my major map requires me to take one math class. She belittles students with comments like, "Well, I wouldn't expect you guys to read the instructions" and "Well, I mean, my KIDS are doing this type of math..." Yes, easy class, yes, easy credit, but her personality is so abrasive.
Very helpful, and by far one of the best math teachers I've had. She's very interactive with the class. Tests and homework were a breeze, just look at your class notes and theres guaranteed to be an example just like it in there. Didn't open the book once. She was very helpful in and out of class. Overall it was a easy class and learned a lot in it
Awesome teacher! I would take another one of her classes any day! Don't buy the book, you will never open it.. Homework is online and if you have any problems she will help you out, no question.
ONE OF THE BEST MATH TEACHERS IVE HAD!! her teaching methods are easy to follow, she takes attendance and only allows u to miss 5 classes, she RECORDS every class period! so you can go on youtube and watch em. some people didnt use the book but i did. keep up with webwork n you'll pass. test are easy to follow. GOOD CLASS TO TAKE!!
AMAZING teacher! I suck at Math and this class was a breeze because of her. Homework is online, she will help you anytime, very accessible. Quizzes are in class but open note. Tests aren't too bad either. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better Math class. Beth is a fantastic teacher!
This class is a cakewalk. take it.
I have dr. jones right now and i've gotta say this is the best math experience i've ever had. this is one of those few teachers that really want you to succeed, dr. jones if your reading this YOU ROCK!!
I truly admire Dr. Jones-- she works so hard for her students success and answers emails so fast it's unreal. She is so dedicated and I am loving my math experience with her. She is not out to trick or fail you, put in the work and you will get a positive outcome. :)
Beth Jones is by far the BEST math teacher I have every had in my life. She is such a sweetheart and really cares about her students. Homework is online and she replies to your emailed questions crazy fast. Quizzes and tests are simple. I would recommend her to ANYONE!
Extremely helpful, good lecturer. Best math teacher I've ever had! Covers a lot of material in a short time. Very fair system of grading and keeping up with homework is key.
I had never taken a pre-calculus course before and I personally did not learn much of anything from her. She assumes you already know what she's taking about and moves at a quick pace. I guess she just didn't do it for me. Maybe if you took it in high school, you'll be better off with her.
Took precalc as an easy review to satisfy my math req. She's so dedicated & helpful, answers all email/questions and her website is amazing! Don't forget to do the online homework. DON'T buy the book. She does tend to assume students haven't heard the info before--which can come off as patronizing--but it's no big deal. I really liked the class.
Not very helpful and tends to not care about the success of the students
Dr. Jones is glued to her computer when not in class, that's the only way she can respond to emails so fast! She answers any question quickly and is willing to clarify!! Awesome teacher, consider the subject matter sucks.
She demands in written work and test for every single common sense step to be written out to an overly extensive amount. A lot of times her lectures are unclear, but at her office hours she explains things much better. She needs every last detail in written work or major points will be taken off for small, common sense steps left out.
She is a great teacher, her teaching style significantly aids those who struggle because she rarely does more than 4 or 5 examples during class so she can help everyone get through all of the steps. She is possibly the most helpful teacher ive ever had and is very welcoming during office hours and will spend all the time needed to clarify things
I don't like this class.. I'm taking this semester. But this class is so tough because some of the webwork assignment her example is useless. She doesn't tend to care for student success. Buy the book that's required but don't buy optinal..
Has absolutely no grasp on teaching whatsoever. Useless powerpoints, rambling lectures, gave us an "optional text", has a fascist grader, made errors on exam questions (providing formulas with the wrong variables?), and generally didn't "teach" anything. I had to spend hours vscouring google for info to teach myself the concepts. STAY AWAY
I am math retarded and have not taken a math class in 6 years, but Prof. Jones helped me every step of the way. I never would have believed anyone who told me that I would be getting a B in a college level math class. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She makes herself available and this made all the difference for me. She WANTS you to do well, trust me.
She is such a nice person. The class structure is, you do the math hw online when you need to take a quiz you attend class, then she gives you a pass to take the exam if you feel ready. She has deadlnes for when the assignments are due. Really helpful if you attend the class as well as her office hours.. Recommend her if you want an easy grade
I suck at math point blank but after taking her class i actually enjoy it... no lie! I took this class with another prof. &had to drop it. This class was made for math dummies like me all her lectures R online videos so you can look back on them, in class you just work on hw and she helps you with it.if i got an A anyone can. oh and no text book!!
Love her - best style of teaching math I've ever had! Was a B math student in high school and got an A in this class. It would be hard to get lower than a B. She is awesome! This is the perfect class for someone who has to fulfill their math requirement but does not like math.
take this class if you want to learn absolutely nothing! doesn't care about students, sits at her desk most of the time, while she has her TA help out the class. half of the time they don't even know the material!n does not explain material very well at all. her lectures are ok, but most of the time you will be stuck on a problem she didn't cover!
This was the easiest class ever! Professor Jones made everything really clear and her grading is really fair too. At the end of the semester she drops your lowest quiz score and your two lowest homework scores. Definitely recommended.
I don't know if it's ASU's policy or hers, but you will learn absolutely nothing. Quizzes done in pairs and homework online with unlimited attempts does NOT prepare you for the next level of math. College algebra at MCC is harder but the teachers actually teach.
worst teacher ever. makes u watch lecture videos online, & attendance is also mandatory for class. u go 2 class & she does nothing but sit @ her desk. u ask her questions, she says u shouldve watched the video. tests r 60% of ur grade! tons of hw & quizzes each week & test every other week. avoid her if possible.
This is honestly the worst math teacher ever. She post videos online which are helpful but when you ask her questions in class she wont answer anything. She sits there the whole time and tells personal stories. I would not wish this professor on my worst enemy. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
I'm an idiot in math and I passed this class. You have to be self-motivated to pass though. All lectures and homework assignments are online. During class time, (which is mandatory), she annoyingly tells personal stories the whole time... responds to emails quick.. all quizzes are in a group.. tests are somewhat difficult. I'd recommend her though!
Best math class ever. You watch the lectures online before class, do your hw in class and ask her or her TA any questions then. Everything is online. You can watch the videos as many times as you need to until you understand the material which is awesome. You have to take exams in the testing center at odd times. Do the work, easy A.
Take this class if you just need to get MAT 142 out of the way! Quizzed are in groups, tests are 10 questions (usually from the homework) homework is online and you get about 4 days to do each assignment. You do have to watch videos before coming to class, i suggest taking notes but class is only for homework - once you finish it, you can leave!
Jones is the best math instructor at ASU. This class is an easy A. If you view the videos and complete the homework assignments you should get an A on the exams. The way she explains the concepts in MAT 142 seems so elementary. Highly recommended
I like this professor very much. She teaches very clearly and she is good at answering any questions. Have to go to class because you must scan in. Homework is online and very easy plus there is written work like once a week at the most two problems. The tests are easy as well. Highly recommended!
She is of very little help during class, and her CONSTANT misspeaking and miscalculating make the class much more confusing than it should be. Double-check all answers or class announcements she gives you, because she has more than likely misspoken.
just ask questions for clarification. She's so sweet, but can often go off on tangents. Seriously though, ask questions - she will help.
The class is done online. No point in going to class, and on top of it, her class is mandatory. 4 missed classes and you will get an E. Work as fast as you want class, get it over with sooner and you don't have to show up anymore. Not the best professor.
I took this class online, the layout of the course is well done. Takes a little work but you should be able to do well no problem.
The online system is setup to help you through the class, the video's work well. It's math so it takes effort, but if you try you will pass.
She is such a goofy, kind teacher. Most of the class is online, but she is extremely helpful and truly cares about her students.
She was a lot like my high school math teachers, which was helpful for me. Class is very easy and just like HS math until you get to the last 2 sections which are loans/mortgage calculations--that stuff is hard. She won't call on you for answers or anything like that. If you put in a good effort, you should pass just fine!
Frankly, Jones is irrelevant to her class. My STRONG recommendation is to finish all the work as quickly as possible and get out of there. The content itself is fairly easy, and done online for the most part. She has group work once a week, which can be fairly annoying if your group takes a long time to get the worksheet done.
She spends roughly one fifth of the class time each week actually teaching us. 30% is throwing worksheets at us, and the other half is doing the online work we could do at home. Despite this, attendance is mandatory, no matter how pointless the class is. Since she barely even teaches us, it's hard to retain the information if you're bad at math.
The class itself is stupid and pointless, but Jones does the best she can. She is really nice and explains things pretty well.
I have taken this course twice at uni level Three times if you count alg 2 in hs I did well in it,but it took way more work than necessary If I didn't force myself to stay up until 3am often I never would have caught up If this material were new to me I would have failed I cant blame her completely, because asu is a horrible school in general
Only saw her twice for the two in-person exams, but she seemed like a nice lady. Always answered my emails extremely quickly. Homework assignments/quizzes were due every MWF. Got to use a cheat sheet on the final. Great option if you are okay with taking online classes, especially with a tricky subject like math.
Class is pretty straight forward but don't expect much help, Beth has her TAs do most of the explaining and sometimes gets the material mixed up herself. She makes it crystal clear what's due when but expect to only get your information from the TAs and the online resources. Expect group work, online homework, and tests in a testing center.
she is ridiculous about titles. If your title is wrong, your work will not count at all. She is quick to email back, but don't expect to see anything you will be happy about.
The class itself is useless, but Jones makes it bearable. If you approach her with any questions regarding content, she will always try her best to help. If you refuse to seek help, you won't get it.
Professor Jones was very responsive and made sure I was aware of every deadline with helpful e-mails. Definitely a great instructor.
No textbook, super easy, and Jones totally understands that if you take MAT 142, you're not a math fan. Finish the class online and pass all the tests and you never have to come back.
The class is a hybrid half-online and half-in the class room. Although you do still have to go to class on the onlone days for attendance. The classes are long and boring. If you are good at math it's an easy A just a lot of work.
She is the head of the math department. She sometimes seems stressed because of it; however, she is a nice lady, though humorously sarcastic. Cannot miss more than 4 classes or you will be dropped from the course, all of the math courses have this requirement however. Its not too difficult. Easy B course.
Jones is an irrelevant professor, but not needed for the course. It's entirely online, class meetings are seriously useless. If you do the online work and pass the tests (also online, in the testing center), you can get whatever grade you want. You can also finish the class at your own pace, some people finished in two months.
You seriously do not need her but she is so sweet and really helpful if you go into her office hours.
This class is a hybrid, and if you're at least decent at math, you can finish way ahead of time and she'll let you stop coming to class. Basically a "teach yourself" class, but it's easy to get help if you're having trouble. You can fail all the unit tests and still pass the class if you show up and complete what she assigns on time.
Jones is an awesome professor. She is funny and helpful. The class is hybrid and they definitely to work on the online part of it because the videos are so difficult to understand, but Jones will help you if you don't understand.
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. This class is basically all online and you can do it at your own pace though there are some deadlines. It is not the hardest math class if math isn't your strong suit, so I would definitely choose this class. The professor and TA's are more than willing to sit down and help you out if you are having any trouble.
I am a student who really struggles with math. This professor was beyond helpful! I am so thankful to her and her help this semester. She is very understanding and if you ever have a question just email her and she is willing to help. I highly recommend this class! I took the 7 week online session.
Professor Jones is really helpful and always there for you. The class itself was basically like an online class. The math system works online, so during class you work on that as you can ask for help or have any questions. It's long, and sometimes dreadful but what math class isn't. If you study, show up, and work hard you should get an A.
So happy I chose this math class! She is a great professor and an easy class. Most work is online and you can work ahead as far as you want. You could finish the class in a month if you worked hard enough. In class work every Thursday and you get homework time every Tuesday. If you can do the homework, you can pass the tests.
I'm horrible at math and I didn't hate Professor Jones's class as much as I expected to. I didn't score over a 70 on any of the tests, but still managed to pass by getting 100% on the homework and showing up for the problem solving on Thursdays. Work ahead! She mentioned on the first day that some people have finished in 3 weeks. I'd recommend her.
College algebra was pretty easy. There are 5 units, 5 exams, and it's all available from the beginning of the semester. If you wanted to, you could finish the class as early as you want to. Personally, I finished a month before the class ended. If you happen to do this, just email her and she'll let you know when you can stop going to class.
Just do your work on time, do the problem sets in class, and ask questions and you can pass pretty easily.
Professor Jones and her assistants are amazingly helpful. I suck at math, but I passed this class with a B. There are 5 tests total, 3 are proctored via on campus or proctor U. There is also piazza where all students go to ask questions and ask for help and where you can find help from other students questions. Best math class I've ever taken!!
I think Professor Jones is awesome. Her lectures were great and she was always responsive and helpful.
Class moves fast and there are daily assignments due, but I took this class a B-session online so that's understandable. All the covered material was easy and stuff you should have learned in high school. There is access to lecture readings and videos just in case you need a refresher. She responds to emails fast and is aware of technical issues.
Math is absolutely my worst subject, but this class made it incredibly easy to understand. This was an online class, and the video lectures were clear and concise. She explains things very well and responds fast to student's questions. But don't take this class lightly. You need to do the work and study hard for the exams.
I'm half way through Math 142 online. Yes they are amazing lectures, tons of support, but the online exams suck! You're not allowed to refer to notes. For someone like me who sucks at Math, trying to memorize formulas for a test is impossible. I'm getting 100% on all homework and bombing all of my tests. Please reconsider letting us use notes!
Interesting class. We have three TA's, two of which don't seem like they want to be there or help you. About 50% of the homework is instructor created and very tough to get through. Group assignment day is very important for your grade... don't miss it. I feel like she teaches how to do all the work the long, hard way when it's not necessary.
The class was very clear from the start. You can finish it as early as you want. I found the amount of hw average. She, and her 3 TA's answer questions while you work on hw one day a week. And the other day, which you shouldn't miss is group solving day, as it impacts your grade. took almost all lessons in hs. Allows 2 wks of absences
This was the easiest math class I've ever taken. Homework can be redone as many times as you want so you're able to get 100% in that category. All her lectures are videotaped and posted online so you can go at your own pace. Just complete the homework/tests on time and you'll be fine. She knows her stuff and is willing to answer any questions.
This class was honestly fairly easy and one that I found to be quite nice. All of the homework is online and you can redo it as many times as you want. Also, if you finish everything early then you don't have to come to class anymore, which is a big plus for me, since I don't like math.
I loved Jones! Very laid back, helpful, and allowed us to work ahead and finish the course early! Easily one of my favorite professors which is shocking considering I hate math!
This class is a basic math class that everyone needs to graduate. However, it is not basic and requires a lot of work. Be prepared to do a lot of online homework and 5 tests. She cares and wants her students to pass. She lectures on Thursday and there will be group test for points, so be sure to come on Thursday. Good luck!
This course is a basic math class that is MANDATORY. I liked it because it gave you real example of how math applies in our everyday life. Professor Jones, is very intelligent and knows her stuff. The finance section was the most difficult! I'm glad the course is over! Can't use notes during exams. They are proctored RPNOW
Dr. Jones was amazing. Math is not my strong suit but she made things super fun and clear. Tuesdays are work days in the library where she literally gives you ALL of class to do homework. Thursdays are small group days where you work on a quick worksheet then are excused. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR.. She's the best
This class was an easy A. I liked the way it was set up, homework was easy and when it wasn't, it was easy to get help. Don't miss the class more than twice or be late. You can get the class over with in a month or so. Only thing I didn't like was having groups on Thursday.
Amazing professor. Her online lectures are thorough and easy to understand--I only had to refer to the textbook occasionally. There was constant help available on Piazza if you were stuck on a question (no matter how small). The interactive homework feature helped to ease my severe math anxiety. I think all math should be taught like this!
Overall, its a pretty easy class, it uses aleks so it is basically self taught so whatever professor you get doesn't necessarily matter, but I wouldn't recommend Jones. She takes attendance way too seriously and treats you like a child. She is also really unhelpful. She has videos online that're supposed to help, but they're literally useless.
I took this class in person at Tempe and it was real easy. About 10 people in my class finished the course within the first 2 weeks. All you have to do is show up and do the homework's on the site. The homeworks you can do as many times as you want until you get it right. The test can be hard, but they're all multiple choice.
You'll initially take a knowledge check to determine how many topics you've mastered. If you're not proficient, expect to do extra work here and there to catch up :/ But Professor Jones has wonderful lectures that break problems down. She is very present in the class and responsive to questions.
This class is an easy A if you do the homework. The professor is alright but her attendance policy is BS. She scans your ID when you arrive and then again when you leave. Every other day there's group work and a day that's for homework. The TA's are your best friend since they'll help answer questions.
Professor Jones is the best math instructor I have ever had. I'm an ASU online student and I was super worried about taking a math class after 5 years of being out of school. She is straight forward and thorough and funny!
The class is actually fairly easy if you put the work in. Attendance policy was annoying, as you automatically get an E if you miss class 5 times. So theres no point in being in the class if that happens to you. Very nice and enjoyable to be around. Homework and group projects once a week.
The class isn't hard but if you're taking this class as an easy out for math think of taking MAT117. Attendance matters in this class and the pacing of the class makes it very irritating because you can't finish the class as early as you would want to but instead you're forced to show up to monotonous classes and stay on a pace that holds you back.
MAT 142 online course. Some of the better lectures I've had through ASU Online. Course is taught in a straightforward way, with an emphasis on actually helping you learn. Would recommend.
This class is pretty much taught online. All of your homework and lectures are on her canvas page. You basically show up to class to work on homework and work on group problems. Very easy class and she's very willing to help you work through problems you may be struggling with
This class is a good choice if you're terrible at math and/or are attention deficit like me because the course content is straightforward and available online, no lectures. Beth is friendly and responds quickly to emails. Homework is easy to follow, non-time consuming, and if you have any trouble, the TA's are eager to help. Easy A if you show up.
If you stay on top of things and watch the lecture and take notes you will be fine. If you have any questions about the homework which is a bit tricky there is Piazza to help. Professor Jones gets back to you quickly and she makes sure you understand the problems and concept well. There are five tests and they are pretty straightforward so study.
You do some group work. You learn a lot of the material on your own from "aleks". It's easy material I learned a lot of it in high school. The class was a breeze. The teacher can either be really nice or really mean. I didn't like her assistants because if you ask them questions they get mad or moody. The class is a GPA booster so it's your call.
A lot of work, time management is important .
Do well on the initial placement test. It will make it so you have less work throughout the class. You can work ahead in ALEKS and not have to go to class sometimes. Tests are short so its easy to get a bad grade. This is a very self-guided class. The professor can help but it is mainly in your hands.
This professor is inaccessible and if you do get a hold of her she has an attitude if asked to explain an assignment. This was an online course, and the ALEKS system that is used was prone for glitching during exams. The teacher would get upset when asking her for a solution to sign into the test or an extension to access the test.
Expect this to be an online class; it really should be. If you get ahead and finish the unit on your own time you can be exempted from Thursday classes. Every Tuesday you must complete a written, group assignment. The four TA's are really who walk around and help. Otherwise, ALEKS is your teacher, grader, and tudor. I'd call Dr. Jones a supervisor.
I suck at math. I was not looking forward to this class. It was hard in the beginning. Nothing in the first part of the class is useful for "everyday applications." You'll watch a lot of videos and do practice assignments inside of ALEKS. Do the practice exams!!! They are optional but, do yourself a favor and do them. Overall good though!
On a few occasions we did assignments on material that we hadn't been taught. This wasnt addressed in syllabus. Had to seek out the problem solving methods outside of class. Got an A+, but still feel like Professor Jones was more hands-off than you'd want. A bit snarky in her email responses when bringing problems with the material to her attention
I suck at math and got an A+. Expect to have homework everyday, but you get 100% on all homework assignment and practice assignments as long as you complete them. I would say the most difficult thing about the class is the written problems as those word problems can get tricky. Watch all lectures videos and you should be good.
One of the most practical and helpful math courses I've ever taken. Jones genuinely cares about students understanding how this applies to daily life. If you are taking two or more classes per session as an online student, take this class as a session C course. You'll have one or more things due (homework, quiz, exam) every other day or so.
All the assignments and exams are used on a site called Aleks. The only in class assignments are group assignments which is solving the problems that are given to you. Only online links to videos, aleks explanations, aleks examples, and sheets of explanations are used for learning. Would not recommend this teacher but the class is simple and easy.
The class is all on the ALEKS website. Once a week there is a group assignment which is much harder than the test. Personally, this class was pretty easy. Ask the TAs for help during class, they are the most helpful. Professor Jones can be rude sometimes but over was understanding if you do the work. Tests were short but were the same as homework.
Ok, so while this class is largely online, she still makes you show up to do useless practice problems that she will grade very strictly. Shes super impersonal and talks more about her personal life than she does about any sort of math help. She also requires you to show up another day of the week JUST TO WORK ON YOUR ONLINE WORK. Take anyone else.
Hybrid class, do all the online work and you can skip out on recitation. Do well on the topic test means less work throughout the year. Replies quickly to emails. Very easy class. Just do all the work, meet the deadlines, and you could have an A+.
We had a lot of ALEKS homework, but every MAT142 does. She provided very helpful, clear online videos on Canvas to teach us the material and did not teach in class. By not lecturing she was able to help us in class on concepts we didn't understand from the videos. Every Tuesday we had a "lab" that was really difficult (I had to rely on the TAs)
She's a great professor, was always available for questions, and found other ways to teach if you couldn't understand. She does not lecture you're taught off of Aleks & her online videos posted on canvas, but its a very simple course so its a great class. TA are very helpful, you have group problem sets that may be difficult but there is lots help!
This professor is good at her job, and the class is probably the easiest math course I've ever taken. Jones sometimes seemed a little disgruntled when I asked for help, but her feedback was always great, and the TA's were pretty helpful too.
We went through the math and she really explained the topic and, surprisingly, the group work was really helpful. I was able to actually learn the material and only felt lost once or twice (which is big!) and when most of the class did bad on areas of the exams, she cut them and we went over it all again. She was very accommodating and helpful.
Attendance quizzes due both in the beginning and end of each class, and you can only get the password if you are in the class. She is kind of confusing when it comes to what she expects of her students. No leniency given
Useless "busy work" given every week with very little forgiveness on the grading criteria. Showing up to class half of the time is just to do online work and is ultimately a large waste of time. Terrible course - take anyone else.
She does not teach. requires you to get all your info from the textbook. The TAs are more helpful than her. Every day in class you are either doing group work or working on ur own homework so you are never actually learning a new lesson by her. It is not the worst class to take if u have an ok knowledge of math though. If u do the work u will pass
Not a helpful professor at all. I did not learn anything in this course from her. Her TA's were nice and helpful but this professor was condescending and the opposite of a good prof.
The course is mostly computer based, however, I would not recommend this course if you need any kind of structure or helpful instruction from a teacher. There is homework/assignments due almost everyday (Mon.-Fri.). During zoom classes you are put into breakout rooms and she leaves the teaching completely up to the IAs if you call someone in.
She can be a little blunt, but is a good professor. The class is mostly done using Canvas and other tools, you learn outside class and apply in class; if you took pre-calc in high school you barely need to study to get an A. Just turn everything in on time and show up.
The homework assignments are so unnecessarily long and she doesn't teach she is by far the worst teacher I have had in my life, and that's saying a lot. Do yourself a favor and don't take this course.
An online medium is used for homework and tests. Homework a couple of times a week. Tests are short and easy, group assignment every week. Jones can be extremely grumpy and apathetic, but the TAs are the most helpful.
Never ever in my life have I had such a terrible professor. Doesnt respond to emails. Get ready to teach yourself, she does not teach at all. I couldnt get the pics to upload for the first written HW, was 30 minutes past the cutoff time and I emailed her explaining what happened. Never got a response back and lost 4% of my grade in week one.
I hate math. There is a lot of work in this class and some of it did not make a lot of sense to me. I work around doctors and nurses that were stumped by some of the questions in the homework. The last part about amortization of loans was very useful. Lot's of work throughout the week and strict tests (audio and video recorded) Don't sneeze! lol
she literally doesn't teach 1 lesson. you use ALEKS (online math website), to do all homework and tests. you work with random people all class to do group problems, and then the TA's grade it. you have to explain every detail you took to get the answer or you get no credit. she gives stupid entry/exit password quiz's. no choice but to teach myself
This is probably the worst class you can take online. The professor makes everything so difficult and complex, especially when it comes to group problem submissions! Never gives good help and make students feel stupid. Take someone else!!!!
The worst professor to take online. Did not teach a single thing the entire semester and even took a day out of the week to make us sit there and work on our work alone, without teaching it at all. Everybody was lost and the way she set up the meeting with the TA's (because she helped about one group a class) took forever.
You are given sign in and sign out codes for class to prove you were there. You do homework in class, there are no "classes" or "lectures" or "learning" is it basically self guided and she sits in the class to "supervise". Don't take her. She does not teach, she does not grade, all she does is provide the codes you are needed to submit assignments.
There is no teaching in this course, so if you're looking for a lecture-based class then this professor isn't for you. All homework and exams are completed on ALEKS and there are weekly group assignments that count for a large amount of your grade. The professor is kind, understanding, and always answers her emails.
Okay, some of these reviews are a little unfair, The main class component is ALEKS which is an online tool. This is no different than any other 142 class, they are all like this so if you don't like this boy I got bad news for you. Attendance is MANDATORY and I mean it. I saw a couple of reviews saying she was rude? I personally never saw this.
This class is not super hard. There is no lecture or textbook needed. Attendance is not optional and there is no making up for lost points. No late work is accepted(like at all). I would say the professor is helpful for the group problem sets but that's about it. If you put in any type of effort, you'll pass this class.
She is extremely rude and talks poorly about students to the TAs during class. She is mean when you ask her questions and she pretends she wants you to pass but she honestly does not care about any of the students.
BS "written problem solving" each week for 20% of your grade. Questions are way more complex than are taught in the lectures/ALEKS. Comprised of 3 parts: first submission, peer review, final submission. If you miss the first submission or peer review = automatic 0 + can't submit the final version. Must also take photo and crop/paste into template.
This professor is unwilling to help with questions about clarity and grading. She grades so harshly and provides no feedback for why answers are marked wrong - and then is downright rude when requesting further feedback after the fact. ALEKS is our only true instruction element; she hasn't taught us a single aspect of the material whatsoever.
Completely rude and unwilling to work with students. As others have noted, makes these problem sets worth 20% of the grade and if you miss any single part of any of this three part assignment, it is an automatic 0. Put an academic notice on me for missing a rather ineffectual assignment while I was carrying an A in the class.
When I initially read Professor Jones's reviews, I second-guessed taking her class. Honestly, this is one of the best classes I've taken. Do the homework, read the instructions, and ask for clarity when unsure. You can't be lazy. She has strict policies, but all you have to do is communicate. Don't listen to negative comments about the class.
I wish I had read the online reviews prior to taking this class. There are mandatory daily assignments that take up to 3-4 hours to complete and unlike any other online class I have taken. I do not recommend it if you have a full-time job or any other commitments.
Prof Jones does a nice job explaining ea module. You'll practice what you learned in the lecture videos via ALEKS which is within the course. You can revisit the homework for more practice. Ea topic has a 3-part assignment, a problem to solve (draft copy, peer reviews, final copy). You can retake tests. Highly recommend Session C, and take alone.
Took C session. Do ALL parts of the written problem assignments. If you do not attempt the problem, you will get 0 credit. Inscribe is a great resource; students will post where they are stuck & P. Jones watches the posts & will get you on the right track. ALEKS is great to help with problems you have trouble with. Stay on top of the coursework!
We used an online platform that was straightforward and assignment-heavy. I spent so much time in this class but focused on the homework and tests. I should have taken the written assignments more seriously because they ultimately got me a B in the class.
If you need to take an entry-level math course, I recommend this class with Jones over the other option 117. Assuming you did decent in high school math, this course will be pretty easy bc it's just a bunch of algebra and some basic geo/trig. I came in late all the time too, and she didn't care. Be nice to her, and she'll return the energy.
Idk who's lying on these rating because her other scores under Beth Jones are awful. She goes by Elizabeth or Beth. She's very condescending in her emails and wants you to make sure her class is the only one you focus on. I wish I would've dropped and gone with another professor. She doesn't teach at all. ALEKS does it all for her
ALEKS is used for this class which a lot of students fail because they do not understand math. However, If you follow everything the right way = you will suceed.
All lectures are pre-recorded, she does not teach. SO TALKATIVE! During weekly group work, if you need help, get a TA. She is not very helpful and will ramble about random stuff you don't care about as you're trying to complete classwork, same with the beginning of class. No final, but 5 tests throughout the semester to mark the end of chapters.
Look at the dates of the reviews lol. It's clear she writes them herself at the end of every semester.
Her lectures are amazing but her responses are not it. She's rude and petty. You're pretty much teaching yourself if you didn't understand the lectures. ALEKS is mandatory in this class so if you're busy or not good with math definitely try to avoid this class. Not worth it. I taught myself everything with YouTube.
Every MAT142 class uses the same program called ALEKS. It sucks. However, this professor offers something for every learning style. I'm a visual learner and she offers step-by-step videos. Or reading, or office hours if you need. I haven't taken math in 40 years and if you put in the work you will pass.
Professor Jones was great! Her review sessions on Zoom each week were incredibly helpful when solving ALEKS questions and written practice problems. She expeditiously responded to our questions and concerns on InScribe! She was frank and candid about sticking to the ALEKS course material over her own video lectures for simplicity's sake.
While the ALEKS platform can be challenging, this professor provides helpful hints to succeed. Attending class, completing the assignments, and using study tools like unstuckstudy can make this course manageable. The lectures are engaging, even if pre-recorded. Overall, a solid math class option.
Unless you have a better experience in person DO NOT take her online. She's very rude and hard to get in contact with. Does not care about student success. Her lectures are amazing but her attitude is aweful. ALEKS is mandatory so unless you're good at math get a tutor. She will not help you.
The class revolves around ALEKS but I'm sure all the MAT142 classes do the same anyway. Overall, class isn't that bad. However, prof is a bit rude and will not help even if you ask. If you are able to take another class, do that instead to save yourself the headache.
Do NOT take her class. Avoid it at all costs if you can. She 100% relies on her TAs to do the teaching and grading, and if you're anything like me and struggle with math, that sucks and will hurt your overall grade. She's absolutely just there because the university pays her to be. She does nothing.
Overall this class was not very hard for me personally. I believe it all comes down to your math knowledge prior to this class, but ALEKS was easy to navigate and all the weekly group assignments were easy to complete as long as you ask a TA to help you.
No lectures at all, it's all online work and lessons. Not hard to keep a good grade as long as you do your assignments.
I did well in this class but Professor Jones was not involved in the class. She only talked at the beginning of class and all the learning was done through video lectures and ALEKS. That learning method may work for some but it wasn't helpful to me. There was a lot of working with groups which made other students teach their peers.
She doesn't teach. Most of the learning you will do is through ALEKS and peers on group days. If you have any questions in the time in class her TA's will be doing a lot of helping and teaching. I did like however if we completed the unit we could take days off class without affecting our attendance. I took tue/thur and never had to go on thursday.
This was the hardest class I took last semester. I was doing homework every single day for hours and it was taking me forever to do because I had to teach myself everything. She was also very degrading if you asked her a question because she thinks that her students are also supposed to be math whizzes. Very rude and wouldn't take the class again.
Makes you jump through so many hoops, unreasonable amounts of homework, overcomplicates every single task. Not to mention overall unpleasant. It's a 100 level gen ed, lighten up. I have never felt so jaded.
Jones is chill and silly! Class is super easy; you do lessons on ALEKS asynchronously and group tests once a week (you can check with an IA to make sure all your answers are correct before submitting). If you finish all the lessons and practice quizzes for a chapter before a certain date, you can miss designated class days. Easiest class ever :D
