Very good teacher, really works at what she wants accomplished
a very agressive professor that knows what she excpects in her students
No Comments
You will probably learn a lot though.
She's not the hardest teacher, just the hardest to get along with. You can achieve an A, just write what she wants and what she believes. Leave your own opinion at the door.
She is very clear in what she expects of her students. Yes, maybe a little opinionated but she really is a good professor
you have no mind, you have no writing style, everything you say, everything you do is wrong, try to avoid her unless you do not have your own thoughts she is also hard to get along with. also, she will remind you everyday the novel she's writing
At times she can be difficult, but she knows her stuff, you learn a lot and she helps you gain appriciation for the subject.
The assigments are simple. She works on teaching you skills rather than expression through writting. Pretty cut and dry stuff here. Do your work!
She is absolutely horrible - DO NOT EVER TAKE HER CLASS!!!! She thinks she knows everything, and to disagree with any of HER opinions means you are WRONG!!! SHE SUCKS (plain and simple)!
if you have a positive outlook on your own writing, forget it in her class. she will critcize you untill you cry. had classes with girls that did so. a pessamist that i acctually got to laugh at my jokes. if you like news and reading newspapers, enjoy.
This class is very interesting if you are a girl, looking to express yourself about many things women go through. Essays only, not tests
No tests, only essays and daily reading assignments. An easy A if you enjoy speaking about women's issues of today and past. Nice lady with a sense of humor
expect to use a quotation in every paragraph you write. remember all that stuff you learned in highschool? Well forget it. Your way is wrong and her way is right. Prepare to write in a completely different style than what you were taught. DONT TAKE
Do you like doing your best on essays and never earning an A? If so, take this hairy armpitted woman. She'll criticize your essays, and talk about her book in every class. There are better Professors. OH IT'S TRUE, IT'S DAMN TRUE!
Did not enjoy the class.
She is a Hard teacher
Everyone needs a pepper.
she was a amazing teacher. she has helped me gain apperication for a subject that may not be easy to understand. speak up in her class and though she may not agree with your views she is always willing to consider someone else's views. TAKE HER. boyah!
She is great!! She wants everyone to do well! As long as you do what she says, you'll do great! I'd recommend her! I've taken her twice and loved her both times!!
Course is easy but personality sucks. She has this prim and proper fascade, but it seems so fake and somewhat demeaning. Quite full of herself and brags about her books.. feels the need to let everyone know what a "good person" she is. We don
She is an awesome professor and I would LOVE to take a course with her again. I may be the only one to think this but I think she also has a very sooting voice. She has a great sense of humor aas well and teaches a great class!!!
Do exactly what she says, and you will get an A. Not a difficult class -- you only do poorly if you are completely off topic or don't bother to turn in the assignment. Bonus: you are done with the class a month early if you get an A on the rough draft.
She knows her stuff!!! Modern poetry is where her expertise is... too bad the class isn't being offered again in the near future. Enjoyable class, Great Professor
I got tired of the feminist talk and I'm a chick.
I've only had her for 3 classes and already it's going to be a LONG semester; had I asked around about her I definitely wouldn't have taken her. She's hypocritcal and for being a women studies class you'd think openess, accepting but not really.
She's really nice and she knows her stuff. The class must get a subscription to the Washington Post, so you talk about politics majority of the time. She's not over opinionated on the subject at all though. She hears both sides. Very cool teacher.
All you do is talk about government! The election was going on during my semester so all she talked about was how great john kerry is! She also dresses very oddly!!
At first i thought she was very nice however she is not. Ask her to explain something and she says"I did", get your paper back and she writes something rude. I used to like poetry until i took this class. She has certain people she calls on. Talks too much about herself and her books.

If you are interested in English literature or writing this professor makes it simple for you. It's not very difficult, but you learn a lot.
she's great! i loved her i'm taking her again next chance i get. of course she has her flaws but she'll definitely go out of her way to help you out! i definitely suggest taking her!
SHE ONLY CALLS ON CERTAIN STUDENTS. TALKS ALOT ABOUT HER CURRENT PROJECTS AND HERSELF. I FEEL SHE IS NOT VERY CLEAR ABOUT WHAT SHE WANTS. I WOULD NOT TAKE HER AGAIN.
She should be teaching graduate courses. I find her hard to follow. I won't be taking her again.
Be prepared to talk about politics. You work alot with the Washington Post. MAKE SURE YOU READ IT!!! There's only about 5 papers due the entire year but she's very fair at grading and is overall a pretty good teacher. She really helped me with my writing. I wouldn't mind taking her again.
prof joyce is a well-educated woman who is full of ambition and i look up to her in every aspect. the more effort and interest you put in her class the better teacher she becomes. she doesnt waste her time. likes to teach& talk about controversial topics.
Terrible professor. I'm an English major and she is by far the worst i've had. She's very rude and unhelpful! She made me feel like a bother, and she taught me nothing. She brags about herself and is extremely self absorbed. Awful professor, don't waste your time in her class.
Just awful.
I'm an English major and though I found the papers to be incredibly easy, the class sessions were borderline unbearable. She goes off on political tangents EVERY DAY, and she will not only express her views, but will tell anyone else that they are wrong. She's also overly impressed with herself.
just really don't like having her
she is a wonderfully intelligent women, with a good sence of humor. i really enjoyed the fact that you can talk about what is going on in the world. i learned more in that class then how to write a paper. if you are willing to do what she asks you will do fine, if not, well i won't make her mad.
I had her last semester. I loved poetry prior to her class, however she made the class unbearable. Certain people would answer and it would be O.K., others would answer and she would belittle them. She is unclear on assignments as well. I would not recommend her for ANY class
Doesn't like guys very much and thinks she is never wrong on anything. may also talk about her husband alot and try to make u think that what u know is wrong.
The class is a very boring class and she is not a pleasent professor. I am overcome with boredom throughout the class period.
She has this aura of ****iness sometimes, and then other times she is okay...this whole bipolar thing just doesnt cut it for me...I hope things get better over the year...
essays are a pain in the ass, but she helps you out and gives you enough time to complete, she is very open and lets you express your views in class, you work with the Washington Post and you need to bring it like every class. i think she's nice, but the essay topics sometimes can be retarded (emmett till, pre-emptive use of nuclear weapons-blah) she only gets ****y when you don't do your work/ bring your WP
I really really enjoyed her class and her teaching. She is very out spoken and I really enjoyed that. She is more than willing to help you if you are willing to show interest and put forth effort. I would certainly reccommend her.
She seriously hates men. Apparently all men are pigs and we don't know anything. She belittles most people, except for those that agree with her. Very outspoken and everything she says is "gold". Other times she is as pleasent as can be. I think she is bipolar or something.
This teacher seemed to be way out in left field. She has two sides. Some days she is very helpful and professional. Other days she is completely unorthodox and off the walls. Her class tends to go off on tangents too. If you can, take another professor before her.
Dr Joyce is really helpful and intellegent, and overall sweet lady! Highly reccomended class.
She's a smart professor, and this class is fun. The only thing I didn't like about her was her habit of inturrupting people during discussions.
i think she was great with the womens studies courses don't know her as an english prof...but she is very intelligent
Shes not a bad teacher but extremly ****! We had to do a resume and a boy i worked with but the same job down and information downn as me but still he got a C and i got an A! She thinks shes really smart because she has alot of degrees and expects alot, but if u do ur work its an A
The worst professor ever!!! She should not be teaching at this university. If you have the choice DO NOT take her. She is not helpful at all!!!! Save yourself from stress!!!!!!!!
Prepare to have an opinion in politics! That’s basically all you talk about in her English 101 class. You have to pick up the Washington Post every week: she gets very ornery when you fail to bring your newspaper to class (consider yourself warned). She does think she's a superwoman, but overall she is a nice lady and gives decent grades.
Very nice professor, I liked her a lot, but her class seems like its way too easy and she seems too linient in the way she grades, though the topics we discuss in class are interesting. The essay topics are a little dumb sometimes, and it doesn't seem like we're learning much, but is helpful if you ask
We just discuss poetry tge whole class. No lectures. No tests.
i found her to be a sweet lady who is very understanding, and leanient with her grading. no tests. however your essays and papers are your tests. put in effort and you'll do fine.
Very good proff. easy assignments, tries to help you get better at writing. only do 5 essays from things in newspaper...essays are around 1.5 to 2 pages
One of the most understanding professors I've come across. she seems to genuinely care whether her students are all doing well, and is very lenient with students that aren't amazing writers. she also provides plenty of comments on your writing, so if you follow her instructions, theres no way you can fail.
If you like politics take her class. She talks about them all the time! I had her over the presidential election and ALL we talked about was the candidates. Her work is easy though, just write the essays and turn them in. If they include proof she will give you at least a B. I wouldn't take her again.
Dr. Joyce is amazing. She has an interesting style, and she has a great personality. She'll tell you how it is. Her class was pretty easy. We watched movies and read interesting material. She talked about sex a lot ,but what college professor doesn't and she is a hardcore feminist, which is a major turn on. If you need a break from hard classes t
She's good. No joke. A lot of busy work but pretty decent. She's a chill teacher for the most part, fun to have a conversation with. She's also very helpful.
American Survey 1 is not a cake-walk with Joyce, but she encourages a fun environment for students engaged in the material. There were no tests or quizzes; four essays and daily brief statements comprised the graded content. Read the material, take some of it seriously and you'll pass the class.
I didn't like her, she was useless to me. I love English and I do well in it, but she nearly killed it for me. She constantly went over sentence structure, comma rules, and the proper way to write an essay. It was busy work and boring. Plus, all you write about is politics (which I liked but she's over kill). I do not recommend her
one of my favorite professors. she's funny and smart and you can tell she really loves poetry and teaching. she's very quirky and adorable. the work in the class was super easy and she was very helpful when it was needed. i highly recommend her to anyone!
Was easy I would say. I did good in her class. The thing that bothered me was that she told us to pick a topic to write about for our final paper and than completely would changed the topic after the first draft and the final draft was due the following friday. That made it difficult cause now we had to redo an entire 10 page paper during finals
Prof Joyce is great. The comment about changing topics for the Research paper is ignorant - she gave us dozens of opportunities to review our topic with her. She is extremely clear, and helpful even with work for other classes. She is funny, if you pay attention, and only asks that you pay attention and do the work. Yes, would take her again.
I had her my freshman year for college writing skills.. one word AWFUL!!
[I received an A in her class, so the following isn't from spite.] She is a person of very low character, a compulsive gossip, and she will do anything to advance herself, including selling students out. She is a self-important person who is utterly insecure. Professors despise her and students pretend to tolerate her.
I received 100% on all six of the graded Essays. So it is possible to do. I thought she gave good feedback on the rough drafts that allowed for myself to make my final drafts stronger. A rather stress free class since the only work was our essays and she gave us a week for the rough draft then a week for the final draft. I would take her again.
She was incredibly rude and not helpful. Not forgiving for being sick and unable to walk to class.
There are no tests in this class, but you have to write five essays throughout the course of the semester. This is normal for an English class, except the last four essays don't have prompts, which makes them super hard. You have to do a statement for a reading each class, so get ready to read a bunch of things you'll never understand.
I tried to keep an open mind with her, but constantly being told "No you're wrong and I'm right." is super degrading. She takes attendance very seriously and is very nit-picky in grading. Assigns a mini-journal every class to make sure you're reading but never gives them back to you or responds to them. Her way of thinking is the only way.
Worst in the department. Hates to lecture & doesn't seem to enjoy teaching. Dismissive, rude. Asks vague questions & is impatient when she doesn't get the one answer she expects. Constantly talks about her own writing, no one cares. Rarely stays on-topic. Asks you to buy books you won't need. 3 essays (easy As) & a paper. No one respects her.
Not great at lecturing. I enjoy the easiness of the lectures, though. All grades are from essays and there's no final. Complains about the author but makes us write about it anyway.
Dr. Joyce's class was tough with a lot of content to work through, but the class discussions were always interesting and fun to participate in.
Dr. Joyce has such a complex mind and it was an honor to experience. I had her for Lit Crit Theory in my senior year of college, and she challenged me to think in ways I did not know possible. Her literature selections were eye-opening, and she had such a dynamic and in-depth teaching style. Hardest, yet most enlightening class I've ever taken!
When you ask for help she is snarky and rude. Needed help on my essays and had to redo them multiple times. Classes are unbearable and boring. Very vague in what she wants but expects you to read her mind to figure it out.
You have to pay attention in this class. She will randomly call on students A LOT! The class wasn't hard but there is a lot of reading (every night pretty much). She is a tough grader when it comes to papers. If she does not agree with your ideas, you are screwed. Quizzes every class too but they are easy if you read. It is just one question.
Another person perfectly describes her by saying Hates to lecture & doesn't seem to enjoy teaching. Dismissive, rude. Asks vague questions & is impatient when she doesn't get the one answer she expects. Rarely stays on-topic. This is the first class I regret spending money on and am considering filing a complaint to her department chair.
Her classes may seem unimportant but go to them. They are helpful in the long run. She is a fair grader, and you can always ask her for feedback and advice on how to improve.
I'm a third year English major taking 118 for core and no other entry level class has given me so much gray hair. I adore poetry but this class just feels really uninspired and like I'm teaching myself. Group work every single day, no clear essay criteria, no online/alt modality for commuters/if you can't make it and Joyce is rude about it.
She provides good feedback and always offers help via email. If you take Intro to Poetry just make sure you pick a good group of people because you will have that group the whole semester. You absolutely have to go to every class because your grade will lower significantly. The only thing is she will dig answers from you in class discussions.
Professor Joyce was always very rude and would make very distasteful comments towards her students. I would never take her class again.
This woman is extremely hard to listen to for an hour. She talks about things no one cares about and expects you to care anyway. Small class size makes for too much one-on-one talk. If you can avoid taking her I would recommend it.
I did like this professor, she can just be a bit of a pain sometimes. She expects really specific work but never fully explains what it is she wants so you have to figure it out yourself. If you write in the MLA format, you'll have to ask her directly if you have questions because she focuses most on the APA format.
She won't email back. She doesn't understand when a student has a problem with an assignment. She won't help you if you have a learning disability. She is very rude and will cut you off when you are talking. She will say how you understood a theme is wrong. She gives zeros for quizzes if you weren't in class, Which is NOT on the syllabus
This class was actually pretty easy. Although she is disrespectful and will call you out randomly to answer something in class if you are clueless. Will dock a ton of points on students who attend her class more than the ones who do not. I do not recommend taking this class if you want to earn less than the students who do not attend as much.
