Information is way too specific for a nutrition class. Goes into strong detail of human biology -which is not what I expected. Boring lectures and does not make things clear. TA's are not much help either (some of them didn't even know the answers to students' questions!)
Kirk is approachable and very clear in her lectures. Slides are printed for you and she basically lectures exactly in conjunction with the textbook. Not solely focused on food nutrition, though. Has many elements of biology that may be harder than expected. Class was overall very organized
Great professor. She will tell you the 1st day that if you take notes you will not need the book. the tests are from her notes. She is funny and very helpful.
For the first exam, I had read every recommended section and went to classes, and got a 98. For the second exam, I only took notes from her lectures, and got a 98. Her tests are very straightforward - she doesn't try to trick you.
Very easy course just know that it is about more than just food, we discussed the biological aspect of food and eating too. If you can get your hands on past exams you will ace the class she is very consistant when making tests!
Kirk was a nice professor whom may be a little boring sometimes. I found the book to be useless if midterms and finals are all you consider, but the book does have a lot of interesting readings and details. Kirk has neat lecture handouts and they were super useful for the exams and her exams were straight forward and many were common sense.
Very straightforward material, however, MUCH more biology than expected. Tests are based pretty much entirely on lectures, textbook is only used for the diagrams she shows in lecture pretty. Nice 3 credit NW class. CLUE sessions were extremely helpful for me. Relevant, interesting material. Kirk is super friendly and funny!
I feel so lucky to have had her as a proffessor! she was wonderful and funny. She made me very interested in the topic. Reading isn't too neccessary if you attend her lectures. Test are also very straight forward
Easy class! Prof. Kirk is great. Highly recommend her. Note that this class is more about the biology and processing of food rather than food itself. Quite a bit of information to memorize for just three credits, but not hard. I barely did anything for this class and got a 3.9.
Pretty easy class, especially if you get the past exams from someone (I counted maybe 4 different questions between the 2009 final & 2010 final). Lots more biology than I expected.
Easy Class. Exams are easy if you can get the old exams from someone who took the class before because Professor Kirk recycle the question from the old exam.
MEMORIZE ANSWERS FROM OLD TESTS!! you only need to read the book for the assignments..class is a waste of time..i fcked up because i didn't go to class or read the book, but i memorized the answers from old finals and got a 100 on the final! Should be an easy 4.0
If you get a hold of her past exams and memorize the answers, you could literally never show up to class and get a 4.0. There are six online assigments througout the quaerter that you need the textbook for but other than that, it's a waste of money to buy..just check it out at ode. She's a great professor if you're interested in nutrition.
The professor was very clear on every topic we learned in class. The exams were pretty easy especially because she post example questions for us to study off of. I liked the topics we learned in this class a lot and I recommend taking this class! One of my favorite classes I took at UW.
I loved this class! I found it more interesting than NUTR 300 just because it wasn't largely "science-based" (i.e. we didn't really focus on the GI tract and digestion), and we went into more depth on how the food was produced. Super easy to do well, just do the exam reviews and review your notes. I recommend this class to everyone!
I really like how she just wants you to understand and doesn't try to trick you. Her expectations are extremely clear too. Just do your best because you can only miss 4 pts in order to get a 4.0. Nutrition is also very interesting as it pertains to everybody :)
i easily got a 4.0 in this class after memorizing all her lecture outlines for the midterms. she said she wouldn't give extra credit, but she did. it really helps to boost your grade. you barely need the textbook to study off of.. just need it for the online multiple choice questions. her lectures are all screencast so you dont have to attend
super easy class. Lectures are boring but everything is screencast, outlines are posted, and the book does a really good job at explaining.
I really enjoyed this class, it was pretty easy and the majority of grades are assignments. She's a really nice lady and really cares that students learn.
Super easy class if you have test files. I rarely attended class and managed to get a 4.0. Her lectures are very boring and full of unnecessary information that don't pertain to the exams. There are 6 small assignments and 2 diet reports that take at most 20 minutes.
Most work for any 3 credit class I've ever had. Lectures so boring they're hard to sit through. She screencasts everything online, but basically there was no correlation between lecture and tests. I took for an interesting NW, don't recommend.
This was a very easy and interesting class. Lectures are posted online so attending class is not necessary. Textbook is not needed at all. Dr. Kirk is a great teacher who engages the class. She gives very personal examples that captivate everyone in the room.
Helpful professor who worked hard to make the class accessible to all students. Exams were easy as long as you attended lecture and paid attention. Minimal studying outside class. A background in chem/bio helps along with a general interest in the topic.
Never went to class, never watched the screencasts even though she did have 5 points total for clicker questions. I pulled 3 all nighters for her 3 exams and just studied the notes provided and got a 3.5 in the class. Very nice teacher, boring content- study for the exams and you'll do well
Great Prof. Online exams were mostly straightforward if you paid attention in lecture. Very helpful one on one as well
Dr. Kirk's class was really interesting! Her lectures are recorded but there are clickers that count for participation points. However, her clicker points were only worth about 2-3% of your overall grade. I thought this class had a fair amount of assignments and the tests were easy if you attended lectures and did the assignments!
Professor Kirk tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests. So just pay attention and do the study guide questions before the test.
Online exams for my quarter. Pretty interesting lectures. Go to class and you will pass.
The class was somewhat interesting and wasn't that difficult. The exams were timed and online. Professor Kirk never answered any of my emails and reaching her at office hours was hard...
She's a pretty laid back professor and likes throw in a few jokes here and there. There are clickers, so you should probably go to class everyday if you want easy points, though I know some people never did and still ended up with a good grade. Tests were online, so you could use notesinternet, but the questions themselves were tricky at times.
Similar structure to NUTR300 except that tests are not online and there were additional assignments. There are 4 exams (no final!), 2 assignments, clickers, and mini reading assignment "quizzes" done online. As long as you study the notes (study practice exams because she recycles some questions!) you should do well.
Tests are based on lecture material but the questions can be very specific, so try to not skim over sections while studying. Make sure to go over in-class clicker Qs and the practice exam Qs - she will reuse some. She ended up giving an EC assignment to help boost some grades, which was really nice! No final and easy HW questions on Canvas weekly.
Her lectures are dry but I admire that she tries to be humorous throughout it. Tests are online and super easy. You will need to the textbook if you wanna do well on tests. Classes are semi-mandatory as she has clicker points but they're worth 2% of your grade and she has panopto recordings.
Dr. Kirk is such a sweet lady. Although lectures can be a little boring, students really can't complain about this class. No homework, 4 ONLINE tests and the final isn't cumulative. She tries her best to keep us entertained and the subject matter can be really interesting if you put effort into paying attention.
Easy 4.0. 4 online exams that are all worth the same (46%). You just have to show up to quiz section because its basically participation(33%). Two small projects that take like 30 mins (19%) and the clickers are worth 2%. And on top of that Dr. Kirk is super kind and sweet and shes pretty awesome. Classes are also on recorded on panopto.
Dr. Kirk's lectures are awesome! She was always available after class to talk or answer questions and all her exams were online this quarter. Some of her questions were tricky, but if you studied the material beforehand, you will be fine! I definitely recommend her. She does have clickers for participation so attend class.
Clicker points, but other than that, not much class participation. Clear lectures and she is able to share life stories that enhance the material.
Lectures can be a but dry at time, but exams are super easy as long as you study some the night before. Overall a very good professor.
Kirk has very interesting lectures and keeps it interesting for the whole hour. It is a easy A class as long as you keep up with all the lectures. There is absolutely no homework, which is a plus.
I had Elizabeth freshmen year and I enjoyed the class. I learned lots about nutrition and about healthy eating which really helped me out to take smart food choices. Really appreciate the professor the class overall.
Professor Kirk is well-spoken and cuts clear to the point. Her slides are straight-forward and follow the text. As long as you attend lectures, you'll pass the exams. You don't need to purchase the text because it is available on reserve, but be sure to to stay on top of any assigned readings.
Go to the lectures and take notes like you should do in all classes. Have poll everywhere questions which are easy and gives extra credit by them. Exams are online so just go to the lectures and you ll be fine.
4 Online Exams. 50 questions in 50 minutes. Love it. Clickers are only 2% of your grade but you can get extra credit. One of the few subjects that are interesting even for the worst students (the students who get bored easily and probably should leave UW). To get a 4.0 you need a 98%. Also some of the answers to some test questions are online.
While it is easy not to show up to lecture, make sure to participate in PollEverywhere questions because it helps to get a small grade boost at the end. It is a very easy class with exams online and only two small projects.
Dr. Kirk is amazing in that her lectures are very interesting, but only if you're interested in nutrition. I really enjoyed the class: tests are online (4 total), two nutritional assignments, and quiz section grades. This course was called NUTR300 so look at those reviews as well. Overall, I highly recommend!
I did not attend class one time and got a 3.8. All of the tests and homework assignments are online and the participation points could be done from home.
She is a really good professor.
get ready to spend $80 for an "easy" class cause of the hw
Prof. Kirk is super knowledgeable and her lectures are very well-paced and informative. Tests are online and open note. I typed notes in class so when I took tests I could "control F" and search through my notes super fast. I never had to read the book. Her supp du jour quizzes are super easy, she gets her questions straight from the text.
She uses Pollseverywhere for most lectures so show up for the participation grade, all the exams are online (still need to study though because it's timed and you don't have enough time to flip through notes/textbook on every question). Sometimes she goes kind of fast on lecture slides but she does Panopto recordings so just look back on those.
I had Dr. Kirk for NUTR 200 in the fall and took her again in the winter for 406. Exams are online and if you read the textbook and take notes then the answers are almost always in your notes. Kirk is a great lecturer and really cares about students learning and utilizing knowledge for outside of class. Very interesting if you care about nutrition.
I took it in the fall and didn't find it to be too stressful-exams online, she gave some extra credit with polleverywhere, and the homework was manageable in the class. Pulled off a 3.8 with minimal effort so I'm sure it's not hard to get a 4.0. Kirk's attitude is great and you can tell she loves nutr!! Has also helped me make smarter food choices
I took her Nutr 200 in the fall because I wanted to study nutrition. And it turned out to be the exact way I thought it was. She was passionate and knew what she was talking about! Her class definitely impacted my food choices in the future. And the exams are not so hard if you read the textbook and pay attention to the lecture! Would recommend it
Love her! Love this class. Totally recommend. Subject really interesting, and she is really nice and cares that her students learn and pay attention to good nutrition in their lives! Go to class - you get 2-5 points each day by answering questions in lecture. You have to pay attention & take TONS of notes, but I always looked forward to it!
Informatic and funny, got me interested in public health and nutrition. Strongly recommend!
She is so cute and funny! loves to laugh at her own jokes. She really cares about the topics she's teaching and loves her students. tests are online and uses pollev!
Best professor ever!!! She's so gooooooood! You can learn so many useful things and easily get an A!
Professor Kirk is awesome! One of the few professors I've had that actually cares about the material and her students. Caring women, and an awesome group of TA's. Polleverywhere questions are counted for credit which makes participation pretty much mandatory. All exams are online and open note. Awesome class.
Kirk was super helpful when responding to emails and helping everyone outside of class. You have to show up to lecture because they have in class questions they ask nearly every time. The tests are all online and are easy if you pay attention to lecture and do the assigned readings.
Dr. Kirk really cares for her students. She doesn't give a lot of work--just 10 super easy online assignments (drops lowest 2). No midterms/final, just 4 online exams. Go to class not just because of pollev (2.4% of grade, still important because a 4.0 is 98+) but because you can actually learn so much. Take notes & exams will be fine w/ quizlet :)
Not a crazy hard class, but definitely pay attention to textbook readings and lectures, because the exams can be thorough. She's a good lecturer. Super sweet, makes corny jokes and interesting real-life connections. She'll share relevant stories and connections worth coming to lecture. Do the work and you should be fine. It's an interesting course!
Sports nutrition is really fun! Dr. Kirk is one of the best professors Ive had & always makes each class fun.
Heres what you need to know if you take Nutr 200, I took it with Melissa Edwards To get a 4.0 1. Have resources quizlet 2. Take with a friend poll everywhere is tricky 3. Be fast at control f finding answers to test questions 4 exams all online Hw and quiz section easy points guarenteed
Exams are all online, so you can use quizlets or your notes to take them and they are pretty easy. Her lectures aren't necessary, but then you'd need to read the textbook. Online assignments are just based on completion, but I enjoyed her lectures and personality. She does polls and they are graded based on getting the correct answer, however.
All exams are online and are open note so it is easy to do well! Pretty chill professor and lectures are interesting
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH FRIENDS. Lecture heavy, she goes fast and gives a bunch of info. at one time, but it's one of the easiest 4.0s at UW if you take with friends. All tests are completed online and they get harder with each test but just use your notes and you'll be good.
It was such an easy A. We were graded on four exams, launchpad assignments, weekly content quizzes on the lecture (3pts max, super easy), and weekly discussion section quizzes (participation is not required and both lectures and sections are recorded. As a non-STEM major, this is an easy 3.8-4.0.
I would not take her class anymore. Because I think there is not link between her lecture and exam. her exam questions make me confuse: have I ever learn this????
Dr. Kirk is a flexible prof - she takes time to review & regrade questions that were weird/confusing on quizzes. Not the MOST enthusiastic, but you can tell she's very interested in sports nutrition. Provides notes guides for lectures and exams are pretty easy. Readings are more detailed than what she expects students to know, so skimming is best.
The content of this class was pretty standard and was similar to things I learned in middle school health. The tests however had some tricky questions that made it a little difficult to get a 4.0 but all exams/quizzes/homework were completely online.
Prof is very knowledgeable and passionate about topic but is a bit difficult to pay attention to during lecture for me personally. Also i felt like she went through the slides too fast sometimes and the font was very small on the slides, so i just watched the online postings of lecture to take notes instead.
Kirk is by far one of the best professors I have had. She genuinely cares for her student's wellbeing and is amazing at teaching. All tests were open book, and I could do well on them with just my lecture notes. The textbook is included with a website you purchase a subscription for, but I never really had to read it
Kirk is a great professor who clearly cares about her students. Lectures are not mediatory but are recommended in order to understand material. Exams are open book and assignments are done with ease. If youre looking for a GPA boost or to learn about nutrition Kirk is your best option, she is the best!
All tests were online, open note, and not too difficult. Professor Kirk is one of my favorite professors! She is kind and lectures were usually easy to follow. All lectures were online when I took it. There were also review sessions before the exams which were very helpful. I thought this class was really interesting!
Great professor! Such a sweet person and really cares about the needs of her students. Easy A, tests are online, and she assigns barely any homework. Lectures and discussion sections were super interesting, I learned a ton from her class in a very low stress environment. Would definitely recommend!
Dr. Kirk is amazing! She genuinely cares for her students and loves to make jokes during lectures to keep everyone engaged. This class was super interesting and not too hard at all. The 4 exams were online and open note, so not too hard. Would recommend!
Dr. Kirk is really caring for her students and is very lenient when it comes to graded assignments. For nutr200 there are weekly quizzes & four 45-50 MC Qs exams BUT everything is very easy to find online. For exams I suggest taking them with a friend but its an easy 4.0 if you use your recourses ;)
She's also super understanding and does a great job of demonstrating hard topics with diagrams and visuals. Her exams are super doable and she loves watching her students succeed which is very refreshing. She offers very generous extra credit for doing the course evals so most people end up super pleased with their grade in this class.
Great professor, clear explanation, and overall a great person.
Dr. Kirk is amazing! She's a great lecturer and genuinely cares about your success and learning. There is so much valuable information from her class. Would definitely recommend taking a class with her.
Wonderful at teaching the intro nutrition class. VERY heavily uses the textbook. All of the quizzes/exams are 99% based on the textbook. It is a very interesting class. Assignments and exams are online. Some extra credit opportunities are offered!
Prof Kirk is fantastic! Really knowledgeable and the lectures are great, as well as making daily recordings of the lectures and posting them. Follows the free textbook but not much reading is necessary. 10/10 would love to take more classes with Professor Kirk!
She's genuinely kind and cares about you learning the course material. Learn how to use your resources before going into the class, and you will be completely fine!
Useful lectures about nutrition; talks about diets, chemical composition, and nutrition labels. Contact by Canvas mail only. 3 lectures + 1 quiz section a week. Quiz section is a short lecture by TA and short Canvas quiz. Attendance is graded. Doing 50%+ of PollEv in lecture gives participation credit. Encourages all to do survey for extra credit.
Great class and great lecture because it's really the closest thing you can get at UW to a sports medicine class. Dr. Kirk is very well-organized, passionate, and uses her lecture time very well. Exams are online, and open note. Submit assignments on time, keep up with provided notes, and attend at least 50% of lectures for a good A. Learned a lot!
Had Dr. Kirk for nutr 200 before and loved her! She answers questions well, you can tell she's passionate about what she does, and she's good about posting slides and recording lecture. Definitely don't skip out on the readings because that's where a majority of questions are from, but if you're worried about attendance you only have to go to 50%
Super incredible professor, one of my fav Didn't read "required" txtbk but focused solely lectures (I learned what I wanted, i.e. diseases, how 2b nutrition healthy, etc. -> you get what you want out of the class) lectures -> cover 85% of tests Ez Quizzes & Exams (>=1/wk) = 60% of grade i.e. bulk of the class (excluding attendance 40%)
Great professor, Dr. Kirk is very fair and a fun person to talk to outside of class. class is always fun, love it.
I really enjoyed the class and professor kirk is very knowledgeable and kind, I would recommend, the class isn't stressful and only 50% of attendance is needed
Dr. Kirk is a wonderful professor. Before the lecture, she always waving everyone for saying hi and a lot of students gets to say hi to their neighbors. She's very sweet, nice, she cares about everyone. She was very friendly to everyone. She gave us two extra credit if we fill out the course evaluation for the lecture and discussion section.
She's extremely kind, understanding, and accepting of everyone. Truly one of the best professors! Super empathetic when covering sensitive topics. Def take any class with Dr. Kirk if you can!
Took this class as a first year and switched to the nutrition major after taking NUTR200. Content is interesting and useful. Exams are open book and reflect material accurately. Large class but Dr Kirk is happy to talk one on one with you after class. I would recommend this class to anyone looking for science credit.
Kirk was super nice but lectures were ridiculously boring. I would find myself struggling to stay conscious.
only 50% of attendance is needed for full participation credit. exams are online and open-note. the only "homework" is doing a 10 question quiz with your learning group in quiz section which you can ask other ppl for answers or just look back at the slides. amazing professor and TA's!!
Very human environment. Class was very easy.
Her lectures are great but can get repetitive and boring if you read the textbook ahead. She's very passionate in what she covers about in class so it's very easy to stay engaged. Class was easy as long as you did the work and paid attention. I would recommend this class to anyone for an easy A (assuming you take good notes).
