She's really nice, good teacher, strange fashion sence. much love for the pink panther sweater, patched leather pants, and really short skirts. Also, terret-syndrome style outbursts keep you on your toes.
Hotter than GA asphault in July and a great teacher!
It takes a lot to scare a feminist away from the Women's Studies department. However, the incessant journal-writing and group project managed it.
Unlike the rest of the students in the class, I was capable of writing a complete sentence. She required attendance and taugh nothing. I wasted my time climbing Morton Hill in the winter to sit through her class. BORING and pointless unless you did not attend a real high school.
Learned nothing and had busy work (ie daily journal writing and group projects) dumped on me all quarter. If you want to actually learn something, take this class with a different professor.
This is a great class tought by a great teacher. If you have the opportunity to take this class, do so with Mrs. Koonce.
Very nice and helpful, go to her before writing your paper. She's great.
This teacher was never on time and very unorganized. Tended to favor the women and would not discuss any problems men have in todays society. Treats class like it is a 400 level class. Very difficult. Alot of homework.
The class itself was interesting - she welcomes lots of discussion and asks for opinions. She was usually late and while she offered help the time spent with her wasn't very constructive. Even though, she was nice enough. Try not to laugh at her flamboyant fashion sense in front of her.
Something that still haunts me about this prof was the daily diet coke cans with bright pink or red lipstick rings all around the top. Gross. She gives a lot of homework, it's easy but pointless, and it's pretty time consuming. Not a fan.
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL PROFESSOR...PLEEEEEEEASE DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU AT ALL VALUE YOUR EDUCATION. WORTHLESS CLASS, WORTHLESS PROFESSOR.
OMG, get ready to write so many papers and do b/s note card hw assignments that are worth not enough to help but enough to break you. Do not take her if your not an english major because it is not worth the amount of time you'll spend working. She will help you with your drafts so you can get a good grade. very unorganized prof.
This professor is terrible. Even though she does not take attendance in her class she still gets angry when you miss a couple of classes. She is rude and not helpful to students who are under stress. She is arrogant and thinks that her class is the only one that should matter. Has you do pointless note cards and acts like it is half your grade when
Way too unorganized. Changes her mind about assignments constantly & loves to give busy work. She will help you with drafts but grades according to the wording she would've used if she wrote it.
Even though she taught one of my favorite classes, I dreaded going to her class everyday. I found her lectures to be completely useless, and even though I attended every class, she gave me a C on my final paper. Elizabeth Koonce is way too unorganized and gripes to the people who attend about the people who are never there.
easier teacher than any i had in high school. assignments are always around four pages and you can get an A on your papers just by looking at spark notes
Terrible Critical Approach to Drama professor. Teaches a very textbook idea of theater - NO feeling. Silly, pointless notecards due every class. Always a chore to go to class. And at the end of the quarter, she still couldn't properly operate the lights.
At first I LOATHED this class but by the end I saw past the feminist monster and found the human buried underneath. She can be mean (she even made me cry once)but I got over it. Sometimes tough classes are the ones that develop you as a student. Just give yourself over to the content and participate in discussions. This was a satisfying A.
Thought I'd hop on & give a shout out to my best undergrad prof. If you have any interest in literature it is a privilege to take her class. She's sincerely a brilliant prof. Her analytical methods and a kind letter of rec helped me get into a top law school and serve me to this day. Her class makes me miss OU. Take this one. Go Bobcats
I was excited to take this class until I actually got into it. Incessantly brags about herself, her son, and her PhD. Terrible class discussions, did not elaborate on any student comments, just would start talking about herself, so I stopped speaking up in class. Tons of reading and pointless journal writing. Horrible approach to women's studies.
Overall, she wasn't the worst professor I have had, but definitely not the best. She is pretty choosey about which students she likes and doesn't like; I wasn't one of her favorites. From what I saw, she is an uppity, close-minded feminist. It wasn't the class I had been looking forward to, but I passed passed pretty easily.
If you have no life this class is perfect for you. I had more work in this class than all my classes COMBINED. Class discussion sucked and papers were sucky because she is SO picky and doesn't explain anything well. AVOID THIS CLASS
She loves herself and her yogi lifestyle. She will remind you that as a EUROPEAN SCHOLAR she is one tough lady. Do not mess with her or she will shove a five inch stripper heel up you. She's a good teacher though if you can look past all that.
She is super scatter-brained and will give you the wrong dates, chapters, and assignments for pretty much everything. She's a yogi and a European Scholar and won't forget to remind you every class. She's a good teacher though, if you look passed the 6-inch stripper heels.
Dr. Koonce is a horrible teacher. I absolutely DESPISED her class! Her women and writing class was like scrapping off pieces of skin and I'm a WGS student. AVOID at all costs! Lot's of homework and no real information to take away.
A lot of work. Long lectures. She has a good personality and picked great books for the class, but she is pretty tough. I didn't mind her but if you can take this with someone easier, do it.
Dr. Koonce's focus is on Victorian Literature but she managed to make poetry&drama interesting and informative. She provides vocabulary lists for the exams but requires somewhat tedious notecards completed on each reading. I recommend going to her office if you need help with anything, she is more than willing to help and so nice!
Avoid her if you can. She is consistently late, disorganized, hypocritical, rude, vague, grades harshly, and creates busy work. No interpersonal skills! She is well versed in her content area and will provide help if you go to her office. The assignments were not overly difficult, but the writing assignments were a bit annoying and time consuming.
Dr. Koonce is a dificult person to read, sometimes she's cool and sometimes she's pretty snotty and can make you feel inadequate and stupid. Do the work, attend class, participate, and you will do fine. Be prepared for busy work.
Dr. Koonce does give a lot of tedious homework; but if you complete all the assignments, listen to her lectures, and participate in class discussions you'll do fine! She provides a vocab list of all the terms that will be on the exam. Also, attending her office hours before turning in a paper or project is very helpful! I really liked her class.
Dr. Koonce is a really great professor. I really enjoyed taking her class. It's a lot of reading, and you have to read to pass, but it's an English class so you'd expect that.
If you value your education at all, DO NOT take this class with her. This is a class that should be fun, but she talks down to students, announces to the class who received poor grades, and is very disorganized. Her discussions go no where and she's very unclear about what she expects, especially for exams. Truly the worst professor I've had at OU.
My advice to anyone considering taking this class, don't take it with her. She is incredibly unprofessional, consistently late to her own class, posts assignments late and with incorrect dates, is very unclear about what is going to be on the exams and rags on students in class for getting bad grades. Definitely plays favorites. No positives here.
Great professor. There is homework every night, but you just have to fill a 3x5 notecard. Only 2 exams, midterm and final. But it was super easy. I definitely recommend this professor. She knows how to joke around, and she let us order pizza to class!!
She is my least favorite professor I've ever had. She's insulting, extremely arrogant, and sends at least 1-2 incorrect e-mails per day. She also has many grammatical errors in her e-mails, and is just very unclear and confusing. You should know, too, that she turns every discussion into some weird sexual thing.
Assigns A LOT of busy work. You will have homework due even on days papers are due. Poorly structured class, with no papers until midterms and then papers due every two weeks later in the semester. These could be spaced out better. I have heard that other professors don't assign nearly as much busy work, so I wouldn't recommend her.
Good teacher. Only complaint is homework due every class period.
I don't know why Koonce gets to much flak here. Yeah, there's quite a bit of work here, but if you do it, you'll get a good grade. She remembers names and engages the class. I had a medical emergency and had to miss class, but she worked with me when she really didn't have to and even accepted late work. She's a great professor and is pretty funny.
I like Dr. Koonce as a person. She's funny and nice if you're a decent student. However, she can be very unclear on some of her grading criteria and teaches the class similarly to a high school course. There is homework due every class, but it's really easy. There's a presentation, so if you really hate public speaking, maybe check someone else out
Koonce is a very sweet lady and it was a pretty decent class, any English major will find it easy and pretty redundant, a non- English major will find it pretty boring. She's a pretty tough grader but just because she wants to push your best work out of you. Overall, I would really recommend her.
Dr. Koonce is very passionate about her courses, so she expects you to be as well. There is a reading and a notecard review due for each class and there are two exams plus the final. All we do in class everyday is have discussions and she will call on everyone.
Dr. Koonce kind of intimidated me at first, but she is so nice & really wants her students to do well. If you take advantage of the help she gives outside of the classroom, you'll love her. Her class isn't too bad, standard amount of work for an English course. Obviously be prepared for class & show up. You will do fine.
All of the poems we studied were available for free via the internet , but she did not tell us this and told people to buy the book anyway. All the stupid notecards she makes you do are really annoying. She comes off as not very personable and too concerned with being politically correct to a fault. She does give good feedback on papers though.
I really liked Dr. Koonce. She's very passionate about literature and really strives to help you understand whats going on, and she does a decent job of explaining paper criteria thoroughly. She assigns homework every class, which can be annoying, but it's not that bad. She's a fun lady and she's really easy to talk to as well.
Koonce can be tough to relate to; however, she truly cares about her students. You must put in the effort to earn her respect. She assigns daily notecards, but as long as you say anything about the text and fill the card, you earn full points. She assigns two essays, an inclass midterm, and an inclass final. Also gives wonderful feedback on writing
A lot of unnecessary work which is easy points, but annoyingly time consuming. I tried to talk to her a couple times and she made me feel very belittled. Does not give any feedback on drafts and is a tough grader. Would cancel class often and assign online assignments instead that were more work than the actual class would have been.
I would not recommend this professor to my worst enemy. She is extremely unorganized and came into class late every single day, even though she admitted she was just coming from her office. She goes off on tangents often during class, and her exams are extremely unreasonable. In addition, she is never at her office hours.
Great professor, super caring. She assigns literature circles where you have an assigned role in a very short project, and the course is mostly based on discussion. This, 1510 and 2010 are best taken through her, in my opinion. She gives excellent feedback, will schedule with you, and is very understanding.
She's a great professor. She really cares about the students and wants to see you do well. She is also great to have a discussion class. She is very smart when it comes to diversity and respects it in every aspect.
This class is fairly easy, it's mostly graded by your writing and short notecards given for homework. There are 5 total papers to write, she will let you rewrite your lowest for a better score. Professor Koonce is very nice and cares about her students but she is a very tough grader.
The worst professor I have ever had. Grading is ridiculous. If you aren't her favorite you will get terrible grades, no matter how much effort you put in. She purposely calls on students who don't know the answers. Discusses students grades to the whole class. (FERPA violation!) Sex is somehow brought into every discussion. AVOID AT ALL COST!!
Terrible. I didn't learn anything from her class. She makes you write stupid notecard responses for each reading, but won't tell you what the reading and response requirement is till 3 hours before class. SO unprepared. I am convinced she doesn't know how to write, as she grades worse than any other Eng Prof I've had in the past 3 years.
Dr. Koonce is a tough professor. The first half of the semester focuses on poems and the second focuses on plays. Notecards are due each class over the readings which can mostly be found for free online. The midterm and final are difficult and require a lot of studying. She is a VERY tough grader when it comes to exams/papers.
Good: She gives very clear feedback on papers. The notecard assignments for the poetry unit aren't bad, they're just tedious at times. She clearly knows her stuff and cares about what she teachers. Also, she is more than willing to look at sections of your paper if you ask. Bad: The explication assignment can be a lot to handle
VERY TOUGH GRADER!!! If you are not an English major, she will not like you. I will go as far as saying she is the worst professor I have ever had. If you can steer clear of her, I WOULD AT ALL COSTS! Homework is due at every class and she does not accept late work. Lots of unrelated busy work!
Prof Koonce got annoying occasionally throughout the semester, but she meant well and cared for her students. Interesting material was covered during our class and I think that helped keep it interesting, but she was quite forgetful and I don't think thats a trait a good professor should showcase.
As an english major youre prepared to read a lot of books and write a lot of essays. But if you forget one small event in a summary she assumes you didnt read & exams are always accompanied by an essay that she will rip apart. She will ask for the classes input and then ignore everthing they have said. Expect to read 100+ pages between a class.
Professor Koonce knows what she is talking about and keeps class interesting, but this was not enough to redeem her. She would call people out frequently and would embarrass you if you hadn't done the reading, which was very heavy. Exams were an essay AND quotation identification so you had to read to pass. Very hard grader and made me dread class.
Dr. Koonce was late to class constantly. She also assigned an immense amount of busy work. In class discussions, she would cut students off and belittle them for their interpretations. You can pass easily, but be ready to be annoyed with the work and discussions.
I know some people aren't a fan of Dr. Koonce but I could tell that she meant well. She's a nice person and she's intelligent. My only critiques would be the amount of homework and that the class goes by at an extremely fast pace. If you engage in class she will engage back. Her feedback isn't always what you want to hear but it is helpful.
Her lectures are engaging and for the women and monstrosity class, she really has a great lineup of material. However, the workload of this class is crazy for non- english majors. 4 papers/ semester, a notecard and reading for each class and an electronic assignment every other week. Het ready to work. She's also a very tough grader.
Do not take this class! I repeat DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! It started on the right note, but Koonce has a weird way of acknowledging her student views. I met multiple students, like myself, who had major problems with her teaching style and engagement. She might mean well, but it gets overshadowed by how much she deals with certain situations!!!!!
I was going to be nice... Koonce has a ridiculous attendance policy. She seems unwilling to give anyone higher than a B, and she has papers due on the same day as other homework. She is an unpleasant person to have discussions with which is the main part of class. Her grading is all over the place and she also sucks at blackboard. do not take this
no matter how much I would edit and revise my papers she would not give me any grade higher than a C. She would call me out in class accusing me of raising my hand whenever I made a movement. On top of all that, she misgendered me almost evry class, it didn't matter if i corrected her.
Professor Koonce was really harsh. She was late every day but had high expectations of attendance for students. She required a final paper but deleted the assignment after the semester ended. It seemed like she had too much to grade before grades were due and chose not to grade the final paper that students spent hours on. Harsh grader, lots of HW.
Professor Koonce's class was kinda boring but I think that is just because it was so long. This class does require lots of homework and reading, 4 double-sided notecards a week along with lots of reading, a couple of papers, a huge group project at the end, and a final exam.
I had her for ENG 3250, but for some reason, it wasn't listed. Dr. Koonce is a great professor who cares a lot about the subject matter and is very knowledgeable about it. However, she assigns a million papers, a presentation (with a paper), and 2 exams. The exams make you recall specific quotes from readings as well as very specific details.
The material challenged my writing. I've never been told I was a bad writer before taking this course and I certainly never got a bad grade on English papers either. This class felt like a smack in the face and the mark is still there.
Dr. Koonce's class was very material heavy. Lots of vocabulary that isn't properly gone over in class that you have to guess definitions on. Her feedback was okay, I expected more from an English Professor. Homework for every single class period in the form of 4x6 notecards. Get ready to read and write a ton.
Very strict attendance policy but was late to class every day. Made us wait all evening for her to post homework due the next morning (multiple times) and always had an excuse. Calls on people that she believes aren't paying attention to discuss questions that are completely not relevant to the day's homework assignment; be ready to speak.
Dr. Koonce was a joy to be around. She had the perfect healthy balance between teaching/business and telling fun stories for the students to get to know her. I enjoyed her heavily and want to take another class with her because she was so wonderful. Truly inspirational!
Big on group discussion and homework, but it all helps in the end.
Koonce was just not a great professor. Had a strict attendance policy, yet showed up late to class everyday. She totally did not have favorites *wink wink*. She would get off topic a lot and could be quite rude at times. She just always gave off a condescending vibe. The class was interesting, but Koonce as a professor was just downright mediocre.
Get ready to read every night for Dr. Koonce's class. Attendance is mandatory, if you don't show up, you will not pass.
So much reading. So many classes. If you are disabled, good luck making it in her class. I am, and because of my disability, I had to miss classes. She lowered my grade from an 86% B to a D, so I failed. Most of the stuff for her class feels like busy work. I participated in class and got good grades on my papers, but she still failed me.
Dr. Koonce is such an inspiring professor! The stories she has about her life and the ability of hers to be able to crack jokes is wonderful! She treats us with respect as long as we treat her with respect. She is always open to new ideas and she expects you to do your reading! Just make sure you do your homework.
You have to participate in discussion and do daily assignments on readings but you can get by with reading summaries. The plays and poems are fairly interesting.
Pretty easy course but you will struggle if you are lazy and like to skip class.
you will be writing reflections every night for this class, they arnt hard but they are really annoying. also a big group project at the end of the semester.
She does give out a lot of reading, but it is manageable. She seems passive aggressive but it's just how she is and she is funny. I love her and will definitely take another class with her, but just be aware.
Class was an easy A if you did the work, were prepared, and occasionally spoke in class. But: She's disorganized, doesn't do favorites *wink wink*, posts assignments (including the exam "study guide") the night before they're due, forces her own shallow interpretation on everyone. This comes from someone who aced the class and got praise from her.
The attendance policy is borderline ridiculous, so make sure you are clear on it before missing any classes. However, Dr. Koonce is very understanding of students' circumstances, especially if you have accommodations. She has a tendency to pick out random people to call on during class, so be ready to participate, even if you're not volunteering.
Koonce is just so out of touch. She spent the semester ruining the whiteboard because she was spraying desk cleaner on it, then complained the board was ruined! Didn't take any accountability! Didn't grant me an incomplete when I took a leave from school when my mom died because "it wouldn't help my grade". (I had a B)
If you show up and put in effort, you'll pass the class. The professor is very caring and still greets me when we run into each other on campus. The class material is straightforward, and the exams aren't challenging as long as you take the time to study.
I had her for ENG1100. She would wait to post the reading for the next day until late the night before and cold calls people every day. Didn't offer many examples for projects and didn't always provide a rubric. The class was an intro level class but taught as an upper-level class.
Definitely don't take the class if you need accessibilities, have trouble speaking in class, or are looking for an easy course. The readings were interesting but in class discussions, she would choose the students who appeared most uncomfortable or confused. Pros=available outside class, somewhat friendly;Cons=favorites, out of touch, tough grader
Dr. Koonce is not a bad professor, I just found her a bit unapproachable and she is tough grader on papers. Lots of reading most weeks and written responses about those readings are usually due twice a week. She loves the content she teaches, just is often unclear about deadlines and will change them around a lot. Don't take if you don't show up.
Dr. Koonce has her moments, but overall she was a difficult professor to have. Koonce took forever to grade assignments yet was very strict about due dates and often didn't provide feedback or was inconsistent with grading. Readings were so large that it felt like not enough time was spent per reading and it was hard to get anything out of class.
She was tough, but fair. She can be a bit blunt, and I think this is why some find her hard to approach, but as long as you're respectful she's incredibly helpful!
I think people are being a bit dramatic, I really enjoyed Koonce. While there were a lot of readings, I enjoyed the discussion-based aspect of her class. She's very straightforward about expectations, though can be a bit blunt at times, which to some may come off as rudeness (it's not). Communicate and try your best and you'll do just fine
While this class was far from being the hardest class I've ever taken, it was certainly the worst. Multiple times, the assignments didn't match up with the questions she asked, and she admitted to making the assignments before reading the book they were based on. Instructions were often unclear and only provided at the very last minute (12:00 am)
Wish I could write more, but, long story short: Don't take this class if you have health issues or accessibilities The syllabus is not right or updated Not as understanding about sensitive topics The entire class knew of my absences (due to health reasons) as she told them Overall, a very hard class for my unexpected semester challenges.
She's a nice person but complicated. Because I had three absences due to illness and then two unexcused, because they added up to five absences, I got a grade penalty. My real grade is an 85% but my final grade was a C+. Incredibly unorganized with the syllabus, and a tough grader on the final project and exams. You gotta come prepared.
