Dr. Lozano is very passionate about her field. Her lectures aren't terrible, but students do a lot of the teaching-not always a good idea for dense theory. You work on the final project throughout the semester. Do the work on time & it'll be easier.
she cluttered my papers with excellent comments yet would not give me above a B plus. I am avoiding her at all costs for the next two years.
She's a nice lady but...her class is torture. The Qualitative Research textbook she uses is practically greek to me. I'm more of an introvert and hated all the group work. She's the toughest grader I've come across.
This was a horrible class and she's a horrible teacher. She totally plays favorites. If you aren't some sort of hippy all into alternative media, she won't like you.
Dr. Lozano is a very nice teacher and very passionate about what she do. She is a tough grader and does play favorites w/ her students. Just do your work and and you won't pull higher than a B, unless you're one of the favorites.
This professor is awful!!! Dont, DO NOT take her!You will regret it. She is totally liberal and if your not the total extreme like her she will dislike you. She plays favorites but like I said only of you area crazy hardcore liberal
I'd rather not be so negative. But this class was possibly the worst comm. class I've ever taken. She really needs to stop advocating her 'liberal' choices in class. She's always trying to mold you into her. Definitely not what you would want!
Ok yes her teachings are fairly biased, but then again in how many other classes are you presented with a different viewpoint like that. Her little assignments are pretty easy, not very easy to get an A however. I'm taking her again.
I dont know what everyones talking about- she is one of the best teachers ive had here. she is liberal, and makes it known, but deal. she is a great teacher, and actually interested in what shes doin. you can get an a if you arent lazy.
I got more out of Mrs.Lozano's class than most of the communications majors did. If you want a boring thoughtless, uninsightful teacher LOOK ELSEWHERE. She is challenging and *gasp* actually gets involved and starts debates.
Lozano is an amazing prof. She is extremely well educated and she may be liberal (since when is that bad?!) She MAKES YOU THINK! Not a no-brainer, not for the lazy who just want an A. Take her to learn and get educated, and it is fun!
Being liberal is fine. Unless she starts trying to make you think like her. Overall, I don't think she's that great of a professor, and for those of you that do want an Easy A by all means don't take her class then. She'll never be a prof. I admire.
i didnt like this class. if your not a talker then dont take her class. i tend to stick to myself and just do the work but she is always itching for convo about anything. not an easy a
She may play favorites sometimes, BUT it has no true bearing on your grade! If you're interested in anything going on the world and how it relates to your life: take one or more of her classes. She makes you think, learn, and best of all: HAVE HOPE :)
total leftist liberal. she definity trys to make you think what she does. she grades REALLY HARD and has ridiculouslly strict paper requirements though there is only two of them(7-10 pgs) and four 2-3pgs quizes.
Teaches well but does not provide outside help. She goes over everything smoothly. But she is a hard grader she looks at papers in a great amount of detail.
One of my favorite professors ever, and I did pretty poorly. She really changed how I thought about communication. I don't know why people are worried about her being liberal, she just is, you don't have to be. She just wants to stretch your mind
First, she's not that hard of a grader. If you can't take it, you're definitely a whuss. Second, she never makes you believe anything you don't want to, she just believes in providing oft-overlooked viewpoints, as that is the whole point of her class.
IF she's still here next semester: she's your only choice for 246; but she's still the best. Class isn't easy because, honestly, it's quite boring; but unless you're taking 248 AND 249, then you need this one. Her 218 & 254 classes are GREAT! Take those!
One of the best prof at Loyola, she makes you think, not an easy class but very interesting and beneficial no matter what your major is
She's not that hard....I don't know why people say that. But she is a HUGE LIBERAL which rubbed me the wrong way because she tries to instill her views upon all of her students. And yes she does pick favorites, which determines your grade...
She is very biased, but if she likes you, the class is not that bad. She's a good professor but isn't very clear about expectations.
She never really explains what she expects on papers until after you've turned them in. She expects a lot of work in a very short timespan and is extremely liberal. It gets annoying at times.
Lozano is one of the coolest professors at Loyola. She is very fair. After her gender class I signed up for her again...truly very humorous. She makes you think and work, but it is a good learning atmosphere. She grades papers hard, but this is college, not high school! Lozano is awesome!!!!!!!!!
Lozano traditionally has not been clear on expectations for assignments. For the first time, she made a conscious attempt to be and WAS clear. Has favorites, but I don't think she discriminates against those who aren't too much. Believe me, you'll earn your grade and learn a LOTS. 1 1/2 thumbs up.
She is strange. You will never know what to expect from her. Very incosistent and unpredictable in grading. It looks like her mood effects her. EXTREMELY unhelpful. Avoid at all costs!
Simply the best, but not simple. Interesting reading selections which fit the classes. Knows her stuff, and if her politics aren't yours or mine who cares? Her views seem well-considered and not just 'knee-jerk' Simpatica, human, fun, intelligent.
Elizabeth means well. Sometimes it seems that the class is simply a soapbox for her to stand on and preach her beliefs. If you do not have the same liberal leaning belief structure that she does this class will be difficult. She only rewards what she agrees with.
Lozano rocks. At some point you stop caring about her grading system or whatever flaws there may be, and you start really learning from her.
Um...interesting teacher. Very unorganized and usually grades very strangly. One big project, small other projects. Not particularly hard, just sometimes annoying.
She does not teach, she merely observes the class and what we are doing. We have group presentations explaining the chapters. Her grading is inconsistent and she does NOT read the papers carefully at all. She does not explain well. there are TWO group projects in this class. Hard to coordinate schedules with everyone.
Completely useless as a professor. Teaches absolutely nothing. Favors females. Average intellect. Does not explain assignments or deadlines, yet expects students to following allow. Does not teach. Does not teach. Does not teach.
Really doesn't teach unless asked questions. Two group projects require LARGE amounts of time. Constantly re-orders assignments. Kind person and helpful (and smart), but honestly a terrible class. Extremely liberal, but an enjoyable person to talk to one-on-one.
She's very left-wing and will not have anyone interject with her liberal thinking. Instructions aren't clear for papers and the rubrics are very confusing. She grades very strictly, so you better bring your best writing skills and be or 'act' liberal for an A or B. Take at your own risk.
Homework is assigned seemingly at random at the end of class; projects lack clear direction. Rather Liberal and self-righteous.
Lozano is awesome! Yeah she is liberal, but that is the best thing about her, I am not a liberal but what a professor is supposed to do is challenge you and you ideas. If she agreed with everything you said then whats the point of even going to class??? I think we should have more professors like her who bring in another viewpoint!
Professor Lozano is absolutly amazing! She has inspired me in both my academics and also my personal life. She is open-minded and incredibly insightful. I have taken two of her classes and both of them have left me feeling empowered. She is not for the meek. Her classes will force you to re-assess society and yourself.
Loyola Alumi....I LOVE Lozano. Great Prof. Great Woman. Super Challenging and Intelligent.
She does assign a lot of readings and work, but if you get to know her she is an amazing person. She is very smart and can be helpful with your academic work and personal. She is super friendly and helpful if she thinks you are trying. If not, she can get annoyed with you, but honestly if you show up and talk to her she is super fair and great.
She is intense. Very, very intense. Be prepared to have your comfort bubble broken into. Be prepared to read a lot. Be prepared to for little assignments all over the place. Great lady. Just...intense. The class is work. Not necessarily hard, but you have to THINK. Preferably as outside of the box as possible.
I am so confused by her low rating-I LOVED HER AS A TEACHER.I found myself looking forward to attending her class and decided to take a class of hers next year.Discussions in class are interesting, and Lozano is such a knowledgeable and inspiring woman and very helpful outside of class.I learned a lot in her class although there was work involved.
Let me preface this by saying that personally I liked her, she's a nice woman and very passionate. As a teacher, she did not work for me. We spent the first hour of class talking about irrelevant things like how women sit in Colombia. She is a very harsh grader and SUPER liberal and she favors the foreign students. Class is all over the place.
Prof. Lozano is very nice, and she makes each class session interesting and engaging. However, she is a tough grader and does require a lot of work each week.
Her low grade on here is surprising. I thought she was a wonderful professor, she accomodated all my specific needs (e.g. I chose movies outside the syllabus), and even though, as a previous commenter said, she is very liberal, she is open to different opinions even though she argues or disagrees with it (disagreeing does not affect your grade!)
Really hard grader. Talks about nonsense. It's an introductory class, but it's insanely hard.
The textbook is incredibly repetitive, and she constantly repeats herself during lectures. Many of the assignments are pointless and her grading is intensely hard. Does not feel like an introductory course.
oh please, the class was not insanely hard, it seemed to be to be the exact level of difficulty a college-level course should be. I always felt i got the grade i deserved. yes, just showing up doesn't earn you an A, but its by no means impossible, and this is coming from an accomplished slacker. The class was rewarding overall.
She's really nice as a person, and is super super casual. She gets a little too personal in her anecdotes for my taste, but i guess its a testament to the close relationship she feels with students? Shes really knowledgable and i had tremendous respect for her as a teacher. Take her for intercultural comm, and you'll learn a lot, but expect a b.
She is a super sweet woman but I can't stand her way of teaching. I get so bored that I normally don't even pay attention. She gets into her personal life way to much which makes me wonder if i can pass out and sleep while she rambles on..see what i did there xp anyway, the stuff we do in class is so repetitive and makes me bored.
She's nice, but I don't like her teaching methods or grading style. She's heavy on textbook usage for the essays, but in class it's like she goes on some tangent where she talks about the textbook & HER interpretation of the definitions. She often claims, "No, I didn't say that" when in fact she did. It's in my darn notes! Barely got an A minus
She is unclear, and expects way too much from her students. I would not have taken this course had I known we would be presenting at the undergrad research symposium. She didn't tell us this until way later into the class. I also got very ill, and had documentation, and she didn't respond to emails. Nice lady, bad teacher.
She seems like a nice (and extremely liberal) teacher at first, however this class was a mess. This should be an anthropology class, not COMM. We watched random documentaries she liked (outside of class...hope you have netflix) and she went on random tangents. The final project is RIDICULOUS and she's a tough grader for a laid-back class otherwise.
Dr. Lozano is a super sweet lady, but doesn't teach this course well. Made up of 3 essays each worth 25% of your grade and then 25% based on participation. This participation is very unclear in the syllabus. You get many out of class blog assignments and busy work that isn't clearly graded until you get a number at the end of the semester.
Elizabeth was such a great teacher. We started every class with some brief yoga, which was really weird at first, but it was a welcome relief after a long day of classes and really woke you up. I had her for a night class so lectures felt like an eternity, but in a normal day class I'm sure it wouldn't be that bad. Take-home exams were easy.
Overall this was a great course with Dr. Lozano. She really created an inviting atmosphere for students. This class is definitely laid back most of the time and it is heavily based on class discussions, which were very enlightening. This class really helped me understand the intersectionality of gender with other components of identity.
She was super awesome and made sure to give you as much help as possible. Very laid back and made the class interesting. There is only four essays and allows you drop one. She was a little tough on the grading, but it's nothing that couldn't be fixed if you asked for help. My first paper I got a C+ and my last paper I got an A-
Awesome professor; I would highly recommend her. Very passionate about the subject and cares about her students and their success. The lectures were always interesting and enlightening. There were three papers but the third one is optional - she takes the highest grade of the three. Participation matters and attendance is required.
Love her. Super intellectual, knowledgable, and open-minded. Also has a great sense of humor. Every film she showed was awesome and made me think. I did find some of the concepts she talked about a bit challenging to understand and write about; however, it was a necessary challenge and opened my mind a lot. Easily my favorite professor I've had.
The course was interesting, but Prof. Lozano herself? Not my favorite professor. Not only is she obsessed with the sound of her own voice, but when students challenge her opinion, she repeatedly interrupts them and doesn't actually listen, just considers how she'll respond. She has an inflated ego and puts herself on way too high of a pedestal.
Dr. Lozano is so funny, and her lectures are very interesting and insightful. All of the exams are take home essays. She is a tough grader but will gladly give you feedback if you ask.
Dr. Lozano is the worst prof Ive ever had. As a student who received a 4.0 for all of last year, Im pulling a B and its not for lack of trying. I attend class, take handwritten notes, and participate. If your opinions are not as strong/alike as hers, she will downgrade you for no reason. Dont be fooled by her positive demeanor; her ego is huge.
Dr. Lozano is a challenging Professor, but quite knowledgeable in her field. Though we have differing philosophies, she has always been respectful of my comments and while I dont think I will receive an A, this class has had me engaged and Ive learned a lot more than I thought I would. Shes helped reframe my view of the world before I graduate!
Dr. Lozano is a complicated professor. She has very clear favorites in her classes and will call only on them in class. She also announces people who do well on her papers. I can be a humiliating class, especially if you don't know what she is talking about. The class is all over the place and it's nearly impossible to get an A ...
Firstly, Dr. Lozanos class was probably the most difficult/rewarding class Ive ever taken. She can be extremely intimidatingbut incredibly understanding. I would recommend her to anyone at Loyola!! She is beyond knowledgeable and expects a lot from her students!
Don't take her! You can do every assignment, show up to every class, participate, go above and beyond on everything- but if your opinion doesn't impress her, she doesn't care at all. She has the biggest ego ever and will take the absolute piss out of your assignments for no reason. I do not recommend her unless you already know her.
Be wary of her- seriously. She is nice, funny, has a great backstory and is very smart. But she's beyond full of herself. If you go to every class, participate often and spend hours on the homework and reading it DOESNT MATTER at all if she decides she doesn't like you or if you have an opinion that is different than hers. She grades HARSH.
Dr. Lozano is an amazing woman. I loved every minute I spent with her. She genuinely cares about her students. She does make you work for your grade though, You have to prove that you understand the concepts, but if you attend class and listen to her and your classmates speak you'll do great.
Dr. Lozano has been the best professor I have had at Loyola. That being said, her class is not easy. She expects a lot of her students, which I was nervous at first about, but she makes the content so interesting that it makes the extra work worth it! She values participation and sharing, so the more you give in class, the more she can help you!!
Dr. Lozano is the most confusing professor I have ever had. She is not clear about what she wants for her assignments and talks nonstop for the whole class period. This class was not enjoyable and I would not reccomend taking her as a professor.
Professor Lozano is intimidating but once you get to know her she is brilliant! During my time in COMM 272 & COMM 227, I had gained so much knowledge of myself and the world around me. One of the most difficult classes I have taken but one of the most rewarding as Lozano has taught me to better my writing skills. YOU WILL WORK HARD FOR YOUR GRADE!
Dr. Lozano is the best professor that I have ever had. I took two classes with her, Communication & Gender as well as Social Justice & Communication, and these classes were extremely eye-opening and she created such a positive classroom environment. She is an amazing person and though she has high expectations for all of her students, it helps.
Professor Lozano gives unclear expectations on projects, papers and assignments, and critiques you hard if you don't live up to those expectations. She also takes a long time to grade your work and gives feedback when it is too late (I still don't have grades for some beginning of the semester assignments and it's finals week). I don't recommend.
Although I really like Pressor Lozano, we had a 50 minute class. Spent most of the class not even discussing the material. The directions for exams are often confusing and not very clear. In fact, the material from the exam-- barely discussed in class. Spent $100 on a book that we barely use.
I was very interested in the class material but the way Dr. L teaches is very disorganized. Expect rambly lectures and lack of clarity. Her way or the highway. Even if you successfully analyze the course content in your assignments, if it is not done in the EXACT way she would do it, then your grade will suffer. Also, LOTS of group work.
she is the toughest grader I have ever experienced at all my years in Loyola. You will think you put all your effort into an assignment and the grade will be much lower than you expect it to be.
Smart woman and can be charming. Other than that I have nothing positive to say. Gigantic ego, assignment/exam directions super unclear, very harsh grader, condescending. Will make you feel stupid and embarrass you. Expects you to think, speak, and write EXACTLY like her. I could go on. If I could go back in time, I would never take her.
definitely avoid taking her if you can
So disorganized and just a mess of a class. Lozano is all over the place and does not give clear expectations. She wastes class time and I hated attending class as it was such a waste of my day. I wish there was more structure. I will not take her again and do not recommend her.
She's funny and nice, however, her grading system and overall class system are a mess. My group members and I found it extremely difficult to organize our assignment based on what she told us. The critiques are often times condescending and not very helpful. I would not recommend taking a class with her.
Elizabeth is an extremely sweet woman, but her class was quite the opposite. A lot of her lectures didn't make sense. I don't want to be rude because she is genuinely an amazing woman, but i found it hard to succeed. One thing i did like is that out of 4 exams, we only had to take 3 and the 4th was optional depending on our grade.
I was nervous about her class prior to the negative reviews, but I really enjoyed my time with Dr. Lozano! She is stubborn, yes, but she compensates by being an extremely knowledgable, inspirational professor who wants to see her students succeed. If you participate in class and show up, you have nothing to worry about. I loved her! Take her class!
Professor Lozano IS AMAZING, I almost dropped her 281 class last semester bc of reviews but IM SO GLAD I took it, Im even taking another class with her this semester. Ive never learned so much from a class, so useful for real world stuff. She is so caring. You def need the book and cite it HEAVILY. participate in class she will love you!!!
By far the best and most useful professor in the school of communication! Many of the critiques likely stem from people's expectations of the nothing class from other comm professors. Most helpful and interesting feedback I received from my time at Loyola! A definite must!
Best professor in the school of comm! buying and reading the textbook is necessary to succeed on tests and papers!
When engaging with Dr. Lozano, I often encountered a dismissive and combative tone, especially when seeking clarification. During difficult conversations or moments of disagreement, Dr. Lozano often made the situation about herself, deflecting criticism and leaving students feeling unheard or even guilty for raising concerns. Do not take her class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. BIGGEST EGO for no reason. treats class like her personal therapy sessions to rant on her own issues. treats her basic class like a writing-intensive and engaged learning combined, all my classmates and I are struggling to keep up with the workload. You can give this basic class all your effort and still hardly pass.
Do not listen to the good comments(coming from someone who genuinely did want to like her). If she were the only comm professor, I would tell you to switch your major. Doesn't teach, just puts concepts on the board and tells you all about how it relates to her own traumas. assigns 15+ hours of work a week just for you to get below-average grades.
The content of this class is interesting and relatively accessible. Dr. Lozano's grading criteria was the thing I struggled with. It is difficult to participate as much as she requires and, even when you follow all instructions, it often feels impossible to earn full points. She also often shares things you told her in private with the whole class.
One of the most difficult professors I ever had. Felt like it was very hard to reach her expectations. Was difficult to ask her questions and get genuine feedback. If you don't think exactly like her it'll be very hard to get through this class. Class seemed interesting at first but throughout the semester it became more and more disorganized.
