Mrs. Mays was good in that she would take things that were hard to understand and apply the same principle to everyday life to make it easier to understand. LOL she even acts stuff out! Make sure you take good notes! And study hard!
she is awesome! the tests are somewhat hard but her quizzes in lab are easy. she is fun and keeps everything interesting and she is a very positive person and makes class fun! i would love to take her again if i needed another science. i highly recommend her!

She was really fummy to listen to. I never wanted to sleep in her lectures. Her tests are all those questions she poats on blackboard. But you still have to study!!
Best Anatomy teacher I've ever had. Make everything intriguing. Has entertaining mannerisms for everthing. Lots of studying needed* but she provides print outs of the powerpoint notes online. Diagrams are definitely important.
If you were one of her favorites you had it made. If not, you mise well forget it. Could be VERY condensending at times. Unless again, you were one of her favorites.
Very good teacher! Take lots of notes, be sure to show up to class every day or you will miss a lot! She explains everything really well and is willing to take the time to help.
Very nice teacher but she is extremely hard!! I am currently enrolled in her class and am getting a B. I am working my butt off for that grade. Her tests are extremely hard and she is the ONLY biology teacher who does not give out study guides. My lab teacher said she is the hardest biology teacher there is. Do not get her. I recommend Jacobson=)
I only have her for Lab. Most all the Lab quizzes are the same, but we have absolutly no review for our quizzes. I have mrs. elmore for lecture and there are 5 people in our lecture class that had mrs. mays last semester and failed out. I have heard from numerous students she is extremley difficult. by the way, i HIGHLY recommed Mrs. Elmore!!
I took Bio110 with her as my teacher over the summer, she is a very smart person, but just because you are smart does not mean you should be a teacher, this is the case for Elizabeth Mays. To put it simply do not take this class if you would like a passing grade with a teacher who is actually willing to help you.
This teacher was very difficult. The worst part is that she did not give out study guides. Take her if you are very hardworking and willing to put in the effort it takes to pass the class.
I took her biology 110 class as a mini-mester, while yes her tests are hard and she doesn't give out study guides, she does have power points you can print off, and she gives you hints for what is on the test such as,she tells you to take the power points and turn them into questions, it does work. Work hard and study & you will get a great grade.
Prof. Mays is a veryyyyyy difficult teacher. but a good teacher too. If you study your butt off you will be ok, but anything less with sink you fast.
Mrs. Mays is a good teacher. She made science interesting to me, and she makes it usable. However, she is not easy. I had to study my butt off, but it was rewarding in the end. I recommend her.
Nothing from her notes is on the exam. Her tests are IMPOSSIBLE she makes you print out pages upon pages of pointless powerpoints that like I said ARE NOT ON THE TEST. And NEVER shows up for class. Has not attended ONE test yet. Yet she has the nerve to be strict on attendance. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I would not reccoment his instructor to nobody she was hard half of hers tudy guides were not covered on the test she had way too many diagrams and on top of that I didn't like her attitude. Had her for lab and Lecture. Horrible teacher. You better be prepared to read textbook front and back.
If you take this class, be sure you're not taking any other difficult classes. This one will require your full undivided attention. She seems quite cheerful and tries her best to be helpful..she posts tons and tons of "study tools"..however, none really seem to be all that useful in the end. (also she is not opposed to pop quizzes) just be prepared
she just tells you to know everything and if you are not good at bio you are going to be struggling in this class also make sure that you dont have any classes that are hard because then you wont have enough time to prepare for her class also you have to print out all the power points because you will need them.
she is the worst teacher to have i told other bio teachers and they even said that they wish they had room in there class for me because unless you know everything about bio you are going to fail
i asked her for help and all she will do is say you need to study more and bio is only class i do study forand i have all a's in the rest of my classes and i am almost failing hers if have a choice do not take her also she doesnt care if you have anything medical problems if your not there you dont get to do assignment unless you go to dean of dept
Mrs. Mays is nice but her tests are EXTREMELY hard. She does post study guides on blackboard that you can look at, but you really need to know how to answer those in like 3 different ways...know tons of diagrams. All assignments and quizzes are on Connect but those are fairly easy. She's a great teacher but VERY hard. You gotta know your stuff!
Very hard and confusing. Do not take with her unless it is your last option.
If you are signed up to take a class with her...DROP NOW! Her class was by far the hardest one I've ever taken. I went into her office several times for extra help, and she always replied by telling me to study more or do more of the Learnsmart activities, which is what I was already doing. Terrible teacher. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
I would not recommend this teacher, she doesn't give out study guides. Instead she just kept telling the students to refer to learnsmart. She is very confusing.
VERY confusing teacher and VERY condescending. She moves way too fast when explaining things. And if you needed help she would basically tell you to drop the class, which about ten of my classmates did. Do NOT take a class with her.
Unless you know everything about the human boy, do not take her class.
This instructor works far too fast and expects students to keep up without asking questions. At the beginning of the semester, she said she wasn't going to wait on slides for students to take notes. Isn't the point of class to take notes and ask questions? I'd rather just watch a video lecture...I could at least pause to research complex topics.
Extremely hard to follow. At most points I had no idea what was due. Took this class an elective and had Thomas Griffiths as my lab instructor. Everybody in my lab who had him for lecture said how easy he was. He was much more available and you could tell he is fully committed to his job and also loved biology.
Very frustrating instructor!! Give outrageous study guides and has multiple questions that were not on it or even mentioned in class! Notes are VERY skeletal! She is somewhat condescending. had almost 40 ppl in my class ended with about 12. She talks AT you, she doesn't teach you. Doesn't understand what being an educator means. DO NOT HER CLASSES!
The class is very fast-paced. It's a lot to take in in just 1 semester. She DOES give study guides, they are just online & you have to print them out. A lot of test material isn't in the notes or study guide though. She's pretty good at explaining things though.
WORST TEACHER EVER
Unless you know everything about Biology of Man, do not take her class. I received a C when I was an honor student before. I would suggest Dr. Griffiths. She moves extremely fast and has no problem skipping chapters and still testing you on everything in them because it's "our responsibility". She is very rude at times and doesn't seem to care.
She was a very difficult teacher. Lecture dragged on and on. I thought I would understand something and be prepared for the tests, but then I'd end up getting a C. I went a talked to her a lot, but usually she wasn't helpful or understanding at all.
Shes alright, knows her stuff but not very helpful and is very condescending when you have questions.
She is a tough teacher for a tough subject. She is not afraid to fly by material even if you don't understand. SPELLING COUNTS ON HER TESTSQUIZZES, so take the time to memorize the material. She isn't very helpful when you are struggling. If you choose her I hope you have free time to read your book, because that's the only way you'll pass.
She's a very good teacher. She's tough and her class is not easy, it requires dedication and hard work. she will teach you not only biology, also will help you learn how to be organize, and manage your time. If you do what she'll assign and suggest you to it will help so much on learning the class and will get you an A.
WORST CLASS EVER. barely goes over material. tells you to learn it on your own. Always says to just practice on learn smart. If you want to hate biology take this class. Any science actually. this class will make you hate science forever. Will always say she gives so many hints to whats on the test and they are completely different than study guide
She has funny stories, but doesn't explain things well.
Unclear lectures, hours of homework, and tests harder than the lectures and homework prepare you for. Rushes through units and expects a lot of self teaching. Overall grade depends on how well you do on tests, however, you can raise your grade a bit if you do well in lab. Would not recommend taking this course with her.
She's know her stuff really well and has a lot of experience on what she is teaching due to her past jobs. she's fun to have in class. If you like to learn biology more in depth i recommend her, however make sure to do all the work she assigns to be able to pass the class. she is fair in grading and really organized, u just have to study.
Professor Mays, is a fun teacher she has a lot of stories to use as an examples for discussions. I like how she grade all our stuff really fast. She gave us the final grade the nxt day after we have our final exam and she is really helpful too. Studying and commitment for this class is a must though. I recommend her if you love to learn new things.
Best teacher ever. Great at lectures! Tries to make work more understandable for everyone. Gives good examples.
Have her for Bio Lab. Very sweet, does a great job with explaining material! Willing to help if there are any questions or misunderstandings.
So here's the deal! Be ready to hear that about a million times. You have very little chance for grades except exams. She uses powerpoint only. I found the study guides to not be very helpful with the tests. I was an A science student and have fought hard for a C in this class. You have to learn alot on your own. Tells alot of stories.
Elizabeth is a good teacher. Although, some of the material on the quizzes she never spoke of/taught. She explains things well but not what on she tests and quizzes on. She doesn't cover all of the material you need to know. Sometimes treats her students like children. "Okay, look up here and listen" Attendance is mandatory unless you want to fail.
Nothing on study guide is on test
Mays is an amazing teacher but her study guides are VERY broad. There is a lot of information on them that does not make it to the exams. Her class has very few points and it is so important to ensure you do not miss online assignments, your grade will depend on it. Very sweet lady and kept class interesting.
You will have to work hard and put effort into this class, especially if you don't have a background in anatomy. Mrs. Mays wants and encourages her students to succeed. If you drop out or don't pass, that's your mistake for not making use of her resources and support.
She's a nice person but she's an awful teacher. Her tests cover things that she hardly touched on in class. As for the quizzes we take them online before we cover the material online.. the reason for this "so you know what you don't know". She grades nothing herself all done on connect. Do yourself a favor and don't take her classes.
This class will probably be the death of you if you don't give it at least 3 hours of study time a night. Don't get me wrong she's amazing in class but the work loads are too excessive for the exam (and usually the study guides don't help much because they're too vague.) Also if you ask questions, she'll make you feel dumb for asking. Good luck.
Hardest class so far at ICC. Not very nice, literally told me to drop the class because of my grade. Was just a few points off from passing and wouldn't round it up, I'm talking .2 points people so now I have to retake the class. Tests are super hard no matter how much you study, lots of homework, and study guides don't help.
Incredibly tough grader and as everything is fill in the blank good luck guessing what she is looking for specifically. You may have one of the 5-6 terms used for a subject but if you chose the wrong one you are in trouble. Most quizzes are 10 questions one wrong answer puts you at a 90, miss 3 well now you have a 70. Not enough chances.
You will either fail or withdraw. By far the hardest class I have taken in my life. Her tests are extremely difficult and her lectures are long and hard to understand.
She explains concepts in-depth and would not let you go through class without having laid a solid foundation before you come to class-meaning you need to read in advance so the class discussion can flow through smoothly.;this, I think, is a wonderful teaching style. She uses creative analogies which I think helps 100% of the time. Awesome teacher!!
I was an "A" student in every single science class I took in high school. This was science class where I not only did poorly, but I felt stupid. Nothing that is taught in lecture is on the study guides/exams. All your homework is online, but doesn't really help to bring your grade up. She just sucks as a professor so avoid taking her class.
Had her for lecture, her tests are really hard but the final was multiple choice. A physical copy of the book isn't necessary, she uses LearnSmart/SmartBook online for homework, and as long as you do the homework, pay attention, and know how to study, you'll be fine
Canceled class a lot, didnt remind you of when things were due, and also the tests had nothing to do with what she taught or gave us a study guide over. It was absolutely awful class
She missed 4 or more lectures and left us to learn the material on our own. I did not like the way she graded as she never put grades into blackboard for lecture or lab. Tests are extremely difficult, multiple choice and lots of word problems. Also, lectures and homework didn't correlate with exam questions at all. Wouldn't recommend her at all.
Never had to drop a class before, and needed to drop her class and she refused to sign a paper for me. Super upset because she could potentially mess my entire life up by not allowing me to drop the class before mandatory drop date. She claims shes a teacher who cares... but obviously does not care for the students.
wanna get ready for her class? -take good notes of her verbatim analogies -study^10 -talk to her (this class is hard af especially the nervous system chapter) -bring colored pens(she uses them for class) -check off the study guides -watch some online stuff (just giving advice because this class broke my core LOL) she's an intelligent professor
She can be engaging but comes off as condescending or rude at times. The tests are very tricky and in order to succeed you will need to study much more than other classes at ICC. The class is Bio 111 but is extremely difficult and many of the questions include minute details. Also If you're stuck in this god forsaken class write down all homework
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. She goes really fast during the lecture and is not very detailed either. She's not very understanding either and may make sarcastic comments.
She didn't care about her students, never put grades into bb, exams were very difficult and she either treated us like we were 10 or expected us to learn by ourselves.
I'm a good science student, but her classes are passable, and easy to get an A in if you read, do the homework, and take advantage of her in class lecture notes she posts online. I found the study guides in both sections not to be useful, but rather all the info on tests comes from lecture and stuff she posts to do on blackboard.
I didn't have her directly but she was the one running the lab curriculum and she makes it so much harder than it needs to be. So many directions its insane, so many videos or papers to read that its unbearable and I don't think she realizes we have other classes and a life as well.. Always been an A student so believe me I tried in this class.
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever experienced at ICC. DOES NOT HELP YOU AT ALL! BEWARE! She does not care about your outside life or other classes. She expects memorization over way too many concepts. Took an online course that had 9hrs of videos a week(6hrs more than in-class.) TESTS ARE EXTREMELY HARD! STUDY GUIDES DO NOT HELP YOU!
Homework work 3-10 points, tests worth 100+. study guides are NOTHING like the tests. did better on tests i DIDNT study for rather than ones i did. time consuming and busy work that is worth close to nothing with little to no help. PLEASE look into other professors.
I had her for 205 and was scheduled to have 3 mandatory zoom meeting a week,we ended up having maybe 8 the entire SEMESTER. She has no interest in helping you, says look at your textbook when asked for help. Its your fault youre failing tests not hers, even though youre left to teach the placement level class to yourself. Find another teacher!
Her study guides sucked and didn't help me prepare for the test at all. Lecture videos are very long and it is hard to retain all of the information and if you don't stay 100% focused at all times. This class sucks.
One student to another, please don't take this class. I have never felt so frustrated in my life. If you are taking this class online the lecture videos are long and she grades like she wants to fail people. She marks you down if the paper covers any part of your face. She does not care on bit about her students. RUN THE OTHER WAY.
Took this class online this semester, do not recommend it. Exams are heavy in this class and lecture videos are outdated and extremely hard to pay attention to. She does respond quickly to emails only to tell you to try harder and study more efficiently. Would not recommend taking this class online.
I am an A student thus far. This class was not passable to me. I was a little shocked to see what a tough grader she is. she expects you to memorize the material and be able to write it verbatim. she wants you to calculate your own grade. when i asked for help her responses were unhelpful and she clearly didn't care if i passed.
As a sophomore in college who has been able to maintain a 4.0, I would NOT recommend this professor! She was awful at showing up to her own scheduled zoom. The tests are NOT what is studied- so be prepared to know everything in the chapter. As well as does not supply enough material to do 'well' on her exam- 10/20 students had to drop the course.
This teacher was absolutely ridiculous. She demands way too much. She doesn't care if you work full time and carry on other classes or not. Makes unreasonable times to be able to meet for zooms when you are trying to take night classes for a reason. Unfortunately I will have to take this course again but I hope I never have her as a teacher again.
She, really loves what she does to the extent , I personally feels like she wants us to MAJOR in this class vs a prerequisite. I have taken this class with another professor and honestly she has questions my other professor did not cover or test over . She makes her own test vs a test bank which make it 100xs harder. The only plus is her powerpoint
Be very aware of the ridiculous expectations she has. She needs to be realistic about the fact that this is a pre rec class at a community college. She knows shes teaching people with kids, full time jobs, etc. If this was a masters level class then sure. the average ICC student does not have 20 hours a week to spend on ONE CLASS. avoid at all cost
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. I am typically an a student but when I dropped this class I had an f. She is not helpful at all and when you ask questions she will just tell you to read the textbook. She is extremely stuck up and I feel like she doesnt want you to succeed because she doesnt help! TAKE WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!!!
I only had her for lab and I was not a fan, I feel bad for those having to go through her lecture. She talks all of lab leaving us very little time to participate.
RUN!!!! I didn't listen to the reviews I read about her. I love Biology but almost had to change my major. She is incredibly difficult. Her exams are insanely hard and often include obscure knowledge. For an intro class the workload is absolutely insane. She is very smiley but very mean, and offers very little help when you need it. DON'T TAKE HER!
only graded on quizzes and will not shut up
I took 6 six classes aka 18 credit hours before last semester and received a 4.0 GPA for that semester and have only received one B at ICC. This class is by far the most difficult class at ICC without any question. She expects a completely unreasonable amount of time for an ICC class, and her lectures don't help bc you have to do most on your own.
TONS of lectures, quizzes, readings, and modules. I am an A student and worried about not passing this class. Study guides for each unit are provided, but filling them out is almost useless. The tests are EXTREMELY hard and don't relate to study guides. Reading assignments (1-3 per week) take 1 or more hour(s) are only worth 1 point.
Professor Mays is kind and helpful IF you ask for help. She is very tough: tests include questions that were not lectured on (just be SURE to use the study guides); very long study guides, only 50 or so questions on the actual test. Good precursor to nursing coursework, which is also very challenging.
Too much exams with too much to learn. We had 5 exams+a comprehensive final, so we had every two weeks an exam in the last month. The tests were way too long, 40 multiple choice and 35 "short" answer, sometimes even a paragraph and all that in one hour. She has some rules that don't make sense and you feel like in 4th grade. She is too arrogant!!!!
I would not recommend taking this online lecture. Content was not very well taught, she would post all the content (which was very heavy), and you were left to learn it yourself. Many assignments that had no point, they were 50+ questions worth 1 point for the whole assignment. The online exams were very heavy as well. Def recommend Prof. Oliver!!
Professor Elizabeth Mays is the worst professor. Do not take her class if you want to pass! She gives test that are not lectured on and studying does not help you for what is on the tests. She is unbelievable.
I read the reviews on this site and I thought people were being dramatic so I decided to take her class anyway... I was wrong. I ended up dropping in week two for the refund. She talked to her class as if we were children. Nothing she lectured on was on our first test. Don't take this professor.. I am a straight A student and I dropped in week 2.
This professor was such an awful teacher. She used food and her kids with the Bio topic. She gave lots of homework, lecture preps took from 45 minutes-an hour and a half. The study guides were no help. I had to drop the class. I thought I could study another way and still pass, I was wrong. I do NOT recommend taking this class with this professor!
DEFINITELY stay away from this professor if you need to pass a bio class. I tried taking this online (I'm great with online classes) but need to drop it soon for my grades/GPA. She is truly unbelievable. She treats you like a child, is VERY fake, & does nothing to help her students pass her class. Elizabeth needs to remember she teaches at a JC.
By far the worst "professor" I've ever had in my life. I could honestly write a ten page paper on why you should never take a class with her. Mays is very disrespectful, rude, and I believe she's the same kind of person outside of teaching, just horrible.
If you want to pass 205 and actually understand the material, Mays is the professor. She gives amazing examples for better understanding. You will have to study, this is an insanely hard class but Mays does her best to make sure everyone understands and always pushes us to come in for extra help. You can tell she loves her job.
I loved taking Bio 111 with her. This class is test and lecture-heavy, but if you prepare and take good notes you will do great in this class. There is a lot of homework and it's not worth many points but it is easy. She helped motivate the class and helped get us excited to learn. I would definitely take another class with her!
Very few questions on the study guide were on her exams, assignments would take 50min- an hour. It was very hard to understand the material and she recommends studying every single day to pass the class. Even when I did study, the material on the exams would be worded completely different.
don't take this class with this professor if you have a job or even a social life. Many people are simply not able to study every single day due to other priorities. The tests were sometimes far different than what we had studied. The final was difficult . Extra credit WAS offered but it's in a pop quiz form so, it's almost impossible.
I know I dropped this class, but I had a family member pass and that took priority, but I miss Mays teaching so much. Imagine if Loreli Gilmore was your professor, she really put herself out there in lectures, and made it easy I wish my life wasn't falling apart when I took her, I didn't appreciate her when I had her.
Had Mays for bio111 and 205. Very difficult but if you knew your stuff then you're fine! Barely missed having a B in the class by about 1% but having a C in her course is definitely nothing to be ashamed of. If you take any of her courses PLEASE put in the time and effort, it'll help you in the long run.
Our class average for grades the entire semester didn't make it out of the low 60s. Personally, I have always been a great test-taker but with how things were worded in these exams and the disconnect between what we discussed and what was tested I could not do well. HOURS of work went into that B. I understood the material the tests are just awful.
DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!! She grades solely off of 100 point exams. Homework is 2 hours long but only worth 1 point. She admitted to wording the exams differently than what you study for because she doesn't like students memorizing the material. When you need help her response is to "study more" or "check the syllabus". Majority of class is failing.
This was a very hard class. I am typically an A student and I barely scraped by with a B. Professor Mays is a nice enough person, but a very hard professor. She does not offer much extra credit and she is very lecture and test heavy. I would not recommend taking this class with her.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES! I had to take this class TWICE cause I failed the first time. She treats her students as if we can devote 100% of our time to her class plus exams are not based off the lectures and are 60% of your grade. And it's the students fault if the WHOLE class got bad grades. I wouldn't wish her on my worst enemy. DON'T DO IT
Would never take a class with this professor again. I'm usually an A student who knows how to study for tough exams but I barely scraped by with a C. Her lectures were long and wordy going off on tangents and stories about unimportant details. Nothing was clear and basically requires hours of work each day and completely teaching yourself.
Avoid this class if you have a busy schedule. The tests were very different from the study guides, and the material was difficult to grasp. However, unstuckstudy helped me prep for the exams and manage my time better.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! I bet she is a nice lady outside of this class however… she is very difficult. We are expected to know all this information in such a little time period while also juggling other classes on top of our outside life. If you take this class I recommend you only take this class and this class only for a semester.
As many of the other reviews say, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS INSTRUCTOR IF YOU ARE A BUSY PERSON. There is no chance for error in this class, the lectures are just her reading notes from a powerpoint and talking about anecdotes in her life, while that may work for some, it did not work for me.
She grades solely on the tests and quizzes, homework is only usually worth 1-5 pts and take two hours to complete. She expects you to reteach yourself the materials that were "lectured", because the quizzes/tests never match the study guides. The study guides she provides is all on a google sheet, and it is just what chapters to read in the book.
She was super harsh and told us most of us would fail and refused to do extra credit... I was so stressed and overwhelmed i ended up in thee ER due to her class. dropped it right after that cause i cared more about myself than i did the class.
I only did well since I was only taking this and one other class. Once I started working full time it was overwhelming to keep up with. Only recommend her if you have a lot of free time. I recommend taking detailed notes on the textbook that's what helped me most, and the practice questions with it. Try to combine lab info with lecture info.
