A wonderful teacher and person! She makes Biology fun!
Nice and helpful teacher! nice person! curves down to about 88% for an A!
Exceptionally clear. Desire/care to help students of all levels.

excellent instructor though hard. she's nice and helpful.
She is a clear and helpful teacher even though her exams are hard and tricky. 3 Lectures Exams and 3 Lab Exams. Lab exams are relatively easy but lecture exams are tricky and even if you try hard, it is likely that you will get a B at most.
Friendly. Very eager to help in any way she can, but also very fair. The class is hard, but that's just biology. She has very clear lecture outlines which she posts on the class website. This makes studying for the exams MUCH easier.
kick ass teacher!
shes the friendliest teacher you can have. and her class is easy. u just need to show up and study. she makes biology a fun class to take. pluse shes the only one teaching BIO 6A. so its a have to take!
VERY GOOD TEACHER. explains EVERYTHING thoroughly and if u have questions shes very willing to help. take her. really fun class. shes a normal person. no knacks or anything weird.
She's a pretty cool teacher
Great professor. Enjoys teaching. Personable. I learned a tremendous amount in one quarter. But this class is a full-time job, so prepare to work.
Lecture is filled with cool and interesting personal stories, LOTS of work, and you LEARN a CRAP load of stuff! Awesome teacher!!!!! Don't forget to pay attention though! HIGHLY RECOMMENED! if you don't take her, you're missing out BIG TIME!
good lectures, but very monotonic, gives very hard tests out from text AND alot from lecture, dont expect to get an A or even B unless you're at every lecture taking notes. And she's crazy paranoid about cheaters so dont even think abou it.shes got agents
Although her tests are really hard, as long as you study and look at her lecture slides and attend class most of the time you will do well in the class. She is a good explainer, even for someone whose english is not that good, Iunderstnads her pretty well
hardest, but she is one of the best professors! You can learn a lot w/ fun. To get a "A", attend every class and get full extra credit (she sometimes gives us attendance credit), read & understand the concepts. lecture exams are very defficult!!!
Tests are taken from data test bank. Lecture exams were really tough. Her lectures were not very deep. She needs to go back to school to relearn Bio. Highly recommend Bio40A before this Bio6A. Instructions for Bio6A was not good because it is tough
Someone said SHE needs to relearn her Bio? Well if you're saying its too tough sounds like you're the one that needs extra help. The class is challening (it's a 6 unit course), but she provides lots of help (study guides) and is more than happy to h
This was one of the hardest classes I've taken!! I learned more than I ever have before too. The lecture exams are tough and will make you hate multiple choice tests. She's a great teacher, very clear and helpful.
She is pretty good and nice person. Although her class is not easy, I still recommend her class. She is nice and her lecture is clear and interesting. If you study, you can get at least B. GOOD class, take it, if you really want to learn something.
Great teacher! Makes biology interesting. Tough class, but if you stay on top of things, take good notes, read the book and do all the extra credit you have a pretty good chance to get an A.
Makes lecture interesting very very nice and helpful. But this class has a lot of work and a lot of memorization. Lab is hard too make sure you don't rush and DO ALL THE WORK AND READING!!!! she is a good teacher though.
HER CLASS WASN'T EASY, BUT AS LONG AS YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND THE STUDY GUIDE SHE PROVIDE BEFORE THE TESTS, YOU WILL ACE THE MIDTERM AND FINAL! She is also a very nice person
She is a demanding professor who isn't there to waste your time. She's tough, but clear and definitely knows her material. Her enthusiasm for the material helps, but the bottom line is she expects a lot. Don't take the course if you're expecting to breeze through. In short, one of the best teachers
Like everyone has said, it's a demanding class, but also a very rewarding one. I would recommend this teacher to anyone who is seriously considering going on in Biology. I'm at a UC now, and the stuff I learned in HER class is helping me in all of my biology courses. Best class I took at De Anza.
CAUTION! Lectures well presented, but exam questions not straightforward. Felt mislead by materials presented in lecture and study guide; exams on a different level. I agree that this is demanding, BUT there is a big gap betw what is presented and what is tested. She also plays favorites!
do all hw and readings and you should be fine. rewarding class if youre dedicated enough.
Beth is a wonderful teach because she is knowledgable about the subject and enthusiastic. The only issues I have are that the test are on a level far above the lectures. So make sure you read, read, read..and then read some more. Know the material.
WOW! I am a bio major and I have never worked so hard in my life for a C. But Beth's class is very educational and rewarding. You'll get the chance to learn biology in a whole new level--she challenges you beyond levels you dare to cross. Take her class if you are willing to test your boundaries.
she's really nice and will help you if u ask. her tests are...fair. just be sure to study her lecture material, and refer to the textbook if anything is unclear.
SHes awsome!terrific at explaining things, and humorous, she cracks me up. The class isn't the easiest, but she definatley makes it all interesting, and undeerstandable. Most of exam material comes from the lecture, so DONT MISS OUT ON THE FUN!!! It really is fun though, nojoke!

She is crazy...tests were sooooooo hard...many assignment to do..DON'T take her class!!!
I admit her exams are toughhard. But if u study harder n really put time onit, its not so bad. Her lectures seem u kinda getting the material but dont be fool by it. Although her exam questions r multichoice however it require critical thingking that ull probably fail if u didnt read dabook. So I say forget the lecture notes n study from the book.

Awesome teacher. Has many activities that cater to various learning styles (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) in lab and lecture. Well organized and prepared, lecture powerpoints available from the beginning of the quarter. Many small-points assignments to bring grades up, and no busy work, all helpful to understanding course content. TAKE HER CLASS!
Hard class but she is a better choice than other teacher. Be prepare to read through the textbook not just the notes.
Well she has interesting lectures, but i'd just say that her lecture exam focus more on your English Comprehension skills more than biology material. The difference is a whole letter grade between her tricky and straight forward tests. you can easily get B+ in her straight forward tests but you'd barely get a C in her regular tests.
Great teacher. Easy lecture exams, hard lab exams. I never liked bio at all but she made the class fun and interesting. Easy A.

in one word HORRIBLE!!! She was my first and only bad experience i've ever had in all my educational years! i am a good and hard-working student with a GPA of 3.57! I worked so hard on her lecture but at the end she gave me 'C' :( Instead take BIO with McCauley if you can; he teaches BIO 6A on FALLs..He's SO great; i got an 'A' in all my other BIOs
She is one of the best instructors I've ever had. Super helpful and friendly. Ask her if you don't understand something and she'll make it as clear as 1+1=2. Love her class. But the tests are easy at all, if you work hard, A is very posible.
Probably one of the nicest and most helpful instructors in my life. she makes thing very clear and her lectures are GREAT! Study and do your labs the class is not hard at all!!!

Amazing teacher. She really wants people to learn the material. People who think she is unreasonably hard are just not use to being challenged to learn. She expects people to work hard, and they should, this is college. She teaches bioglogy for bio majors; the classes are not GE they are not going to be easy. Great lectures, and fair tests.
she explains her lectures very clear but truly, giving out great lectures does not mean she is a great mentor. good luck if you are going to take her class...that's true that she is a little bit discriminated...
Fall 05 was the most awesome time of my life. Beth is a total sweetheart. The class is tedious, but if you plan out your day and structure how you intend to study for her class, you'll make due quite well. Print lecture notes and take note of the examples she uses. Her class is a hard one, but with the effort, a very doable class.
Her tests will have tricky wording. Her lab tests require a good visual memory or at least the ability to guess functions of different parts based on appearance. She is hot, funny, and patient. Take her class, but be prepared to work if you want an A.
She only teaches Biology 6A; indeed, college is not willing to give her any higher level of biology cuz she's sucks..I HATE HER & THE WAY SHE TEACHES and treats people! She's good to some people and bad and unhelpful to others. I do NOT recommonded her AT ALL! If you can wait, take Bio 6A with other instructors. One sentence she's TERRIBLE.
SUPER DUPER teacher! Helpful, funny, nice, patient etc. Beth is one of the best teachers! She is always going to be there for you! Her lectures are to the point, she is super clear! but her tests ARE tricking, intended to make sure you understand the material, she remembers everyone's names too! Bio 6A IS a very hard class! but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
GREAT TEACHER!TAKE HER!Very clear, her HW asignments are a big help & relate to her test.Understand the material & you're fine. Her tests are pretty tricky but as long as u study u'll do fine & get A. 4 lecture exams & 2 pretty striaghforward Lab exam. The HW & exam redo will help u're grade. There's extra credit.Recording suggested bc she goes fast.
Very motivating teacher. She knows her stuff, and makes sure you do, too! The lecture exams require critical thinking and application of concepts, not regurgitation. The lab exams have more direct questions, but require you to understand functions as well as structures.(What's the point of knowing what it is if you don't know what it does, anyway?)
not a easy class...to get high score in her exams, u have to understand the materials throughly. Exams are all MCs.she likes to ask "WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS IS TRUE?" she is helpful and cares her students..if u work hard in labs and pay attention to class, a good impression might help ur final grade. a better choice compare to McXXXX
She will try her best to fail you on exams, while smiling at you during class. Take it and see for yourself. You be the judge.
IF YOU WANNA HATE BIO... TAKE HER... IF YOU WANNA SUFFER FROM BAD GRADE TAKE HER... IF YOU JUST LOVE TO DO BAD... TAKE HER

You will love, Elizabeth, she has to be one of the most caring person i've ever met. She will start out the course by having each and every students' email address or contact, and she will find out each individual's needs to succeed in her class. She is very good at giving examples, she makes confusing topics understandable. You will learn A LOT.
Yes, u will learn a lot. Yes, the class is interesting if u like worms, bugs, fungus, mucus, corpses and other ugly things. Yes, u will die on the exams, and if u still do well she will kill u on the next one. I definitely recommend this class simply to see a master turn an easy bio course into an English course. Good for u Mcpartlan.
Superb knowledgeable and helpful bio teacher. Good to take if u major in a related field. Will prep u for higher classes. Must study hard, take a LOT of lecture notes, go to any review sessions, and schedule her office hours if u need. Objective multi choice lecture exams. Try not to miss labs. Expect a busy and rewarding quarter.
Great Class! Bad Teacher.
Great Teacher! Passionate about biology. But be prepared to study! All these other comments are from people who diddnt study. She can really teach you alot, and prepare you if you give the effort. Strongly recommended!!!
Stay well away from this guy! Tests are impossible even with lots of studying. It's like she thinks bio is your only class, so she expects you to study it 24/7. Crazy!
only one comment to make: study. Everything you need to study is on the slides, nothing extra. If you study the slides, and understand them, you will do fine. There is no, "cruising,"in this class, or you will screw up. the material will stick in your head if work hard, but if you wont, its over.
It's true that her test is tricky in the wording, but if you really know your material, then it should not be a problem. She gives so much extra credit that it would bump your grade one letter up. and beside, she warned everyone that English skill is important on day 1. love her class. doesn't even feel like a science class.
Best class EVER! and recomended to kids of all ages. Be aware that although this class is alot of fun it is also alot of work, meaning that you actually have to pay attention and work to get your grade. Personally, I did not think the tests were all that hard BUT I did study everyday and all weekend long. GOOD LUCK!
Key to success in this class: TAKE GOOD NOTES! (Or tape-record her lectures). Most questions in tests are from her lectures, whatever she talks about, including random stories, are not so random! They appear in tests. HARD TO get A's. Possible to get an A if you study every SINGLE DAY. Good at teaching, and helpful.
first of all, i think beth is a great teacher cuz she is so knowledgeable about the subject. yeah her test is hard, very hard..but she gives away a lot of extra credit..recommended..but u hab to study ur ass off!
Don't waste your time or her's if you aren't serious about the class. On par with what you'll see at any good 4 year institution. Prep for the labs and do the reading before lexture and life will be much easier. Did I mention she's a hottie?
She is one of the hardest teachers at De Anza. But she teaches really great! Love her so much. Not esay A. If you want to learn, take her! really you learn a lot and it helps you get well-prepared. Seriously, don't skip class, record her lecture and take notes. it is absolutely needed. ask questions and clearifications. a few extra credit.
THIS TEACHER IS SUPER HARD!! i barely passed her class w/ a C and i studied a lot! her tests are very hard and suicidal. they're all multi choice and she asks nothing but "which are the following is true" and answers were either "all of the above, none of the above, etc". lectures are very long and boring. i wish you luck if plan to take her class!
she is one of the hardest teachers i have ever taken! BUT i learned soooo much in her class. Shes very helpful! and super nice...i deff recommend taking her class..but only if your serious about bio...her tests are super super hard. I studied my butt off day and night...and got a B. But i loved her!!!
Nice teacher, hard exams.
She is probably one of the best biology teachers you will ever had. She cares about the subject and her students. She is a great lecturer and makes you interested in the subject. If you attend classes, pay attention, do homework and do the review sheet before exams you'll do fine, I did. Book is not really needed.
You should study English more than bio..if you want to get high score from test. She only likes local students, not international student
Just Hard!
Nice teacher, but very hard tests, like most of the others. Must memorize everything she says in class. Textbook not really heavily emphasized. With a LOT of work you can get an A for sure! RecommendeD.
She's kind, helpful, and intelligent. Her class is difficult if you plan on achieving A's all quarter, but passing is easy enough. She is humorous and knows what she's doing. Lectures are almost all you need to prepare for exams - so that means: pay attention! People who don't like her are usually lazy and looking for an easy A.
Professor McPartlan is an amazing instructor and person. Those who rate her terribly most likely haven't tried (e.g. those who've plagiarized) and expected an easy A. She doesn't give easy A's; she's difficult, but fair. If you do your share of work, you'll pass. I can't stress how wonderful she is. She's one of my favorite professors ever!
Anyone who said they studied but failed probably expected an easy A. Just because she covers just about everything in lecture doesn't mean you don't need to study. Yes, her class is difficult, but she's so passionate about what she teaches, and so, so caring. Anyone who tries loves her; the ones who don't like her haven't lifted a finger.
the worst professor I've ever had. she works so hard to take the points off, and the tests are soooo hard, her wording is tricky, even though you understand the material you cannot get a good grade. She pretends that she is a nice, but she is really not.
Mcpartlan is honestly a very caring and patient professor. HOWEVER, there are many cons for taking her class. Tests are unbelievably tricky, notes are heavily emphasized along with the text, and it would be reasonable to study at least 10 hours a week.
Her tests are TRICKY. Multiple Choice. First 3 answers are reasonable, 4th would be something like "all of the above" 5th would be something like "A and B" or "A and C", etc. Incredibly nice professor though, I can't stress that point enough. If you need the A, don't take her, if you can stand getting a B or most likely a C, take her. =)
Anyone who gave McPartlan a low review cannot have been a serious student. Beth by far has been my most inspirational, helpful, and intelligent teacher. For those serious science or premed students, Beth will really prepare you for the difficulty of a UC level class. I dare say she is one of DeAnza's best professors.
Very nice, very helpful, organized, her manual & assignments r very helpful, well thought out. Can't avoid some textbook when it comes to getting As in certain sciences(duh) but if u skim thru the passages relevant to lecture/lab topic, it can only help. If you rated her bad after taking her 6A,consider quitting Biology, MD,etc. UNDERSTAND not memoriz
The only ?problem? with Prof. mcpartlan is that she CARES too much! she really wants her students to UNDERSTAND and offers help more than you can ask. If you are lazy, cheater and expect an easy A, don?t waste your and hers time. and who ever said she play favorite probably never bother to ask her for help. Hope to take her again in 6C!!
Amazing teacher. She's super nice. Her tests are really hard though so don't slack off. When she wears her lab coat; oh man she gets hot!
McPartlan is one of the best teachers I have come across so far at De Anza. Her lectures are interesting, well organized, and her enthusiasm for biology helps a lot. Her tests are by no means easy, but she does a lot to be helpful and fair about the grading, and to help students understand anything they're struggling with.
Anyone who says that they understood the material but failed to get a good grade...well, isn't that contradictory? Beth is an amazing professor, and a very involved, caring one at that. She does her best to help every student, but that doesn't mean she'll go out of her way to pamper you. If you need help, be an adult; ask for it. She'll oblige.
good class, attendance mandatory in lab but not for lecture
There isn't a word in this world that can describe how lovely, kind, adorable Liz is. Infact,I did a really horrible thing to her and myself in her class. Not only she did not punish me,but she encouraged me to overcome theworst situation Ihadever encountered.Shedefinitely deserves tobe a professor not only in DeAnzaCollege but also university like UC
Hard class, a lot of work involved. The textbook was more helpful than either her power-points or her lectures. She makes the tests hard on purpose with tricky wording and "all of the above" or "none of the above" type questions. Super nit-picky about homework and class assignments. Find someone easier, if you can.
Best professor ever! Her lectures are very clear and interesting.Recording them really pays off because they are loaded with a lot of info that you can't get down all the time. As long as you stay on top of things like the lab manual and put effort into doing the hw (which is not that much) the class isnt so bad in terms of difficulty.
20 dropped and 50 remained. Out of those 50 only 25 passed. Don't take her class if your not willing to do the work. Don't try to memorize anything, understand biology conceptually you'll get atleast a B. Midterms are the toughest, final is a a bit easier. Lab midterm is hardest. Don't take this class if you don't have atleast 12 hours a week.
6C is a boring subject and it gets worse in this instructor's class. She lectured from her powder point and punch of note in her hand, but exams have nothing to do with the lectures. She could pick 1 random line somewhere in the book and put in the exams, some questions also from the field trip.Prepare to memorize every single word from the book
Take notes during lecture. Lab quizes are actually lab midterms.
Best Prof I've ever had!
crystal clear on explaining concepts! just need to read the book little bit and you will get a good grade! she is really fair at grading and constantly adjust exam points that are not fair to us!will try her best to help you out!a great teacher overall
She is the best teacher for BIO 6A! very informative & gives a clear lecture. Recording her lecture is the best way to study as you will not to be able to write detail notes in class. Lecture exams are not easy though. Her questions are not straight forward, but she wants you to apply the concepts that you've learned. She's very good overall!
Ms.McPartlan is the nicest teacher ever! She is informative in lectures-take good notes and it should be sufficient;recording shouldnt be necessary. It is a challenging class but try to love what u study and thatll take the steam off.Exams are def. tricky, but once u get the hang of it,it should be fine! She is very approachable & understanding!
She is very tricky on exams and nit picky on assignments but if you very hard and study a lot and take your time on every exam question you should be fine. About 45% of ppl fail becaise get confused on her tricky exam questions and get them all wrong. Lab exams are easier then lecture exams. She's very helpful and kind
mcpartlan REALLY knows how to destroy a student's confidence. As a decent student who has gotten by with As and Bs stepped into her class and little did I know that I would be penalized for something which is so minor! She is a stickler on rules and seems to be very nice at first but she really doesn't care about her students!
she plays these stupid games on the tests to weed out students. so it did not matter what you learned or not; she treats this course to purposely destroy student's academic dreams. her tests are fraudulent and her extracredit assignments take forever to do. it was hard trying to figure out how to study for her exams. by dec, i hated the class.
Stop talking like stupid kids that are against someone who plays havoc to your nerve. If you find her hard difficult and her tests are stupid then reconsider because maybe you are the stupid ones. Work hard if you want to success. How do you suppose to enter scientific field if you want an easy life with all easy As? Better stop talking nonsense!
There's a reason she loses about 20 people every quarter to withdrawal/drop. Her class is very difficult and getting an A or even seeing an A in her class is extremely rare yet not impossible. Fast paced, lots of dense material, but a good teacher who is passionate and knows her stuff and will help you. Take only if u have to and have time for it
took Bio6A with her in Fall11. lost all of my confidence at first. tests were hard and confused with her wording style. I got an A but that was lots of hard work. If you have no choice but taking her: read and UNDERSTAND the book (really IMPORTANT) cuz studyguide dont help, record her lectures, listen to it like you listen to music :)
She is SO HARD. Her exams really aren't easy and you have to really give it your best to pass. Her lectures are really interesting and will do everything she can to help you. You really do learn a lot out of this class.. and if you want to learn, you should take her. To be honest, she really prepares you for when you transfer.
I don't know how people can say she's horrible and that they didn't pass when she offers you so much help outside the classroom, she gives you study guides for each midterm/final and dedicates a 3 hour lab to review for the lab midterms. You can't just know the answers to the study guide- you have to know it as a process and you will easily pass
Taking Bio with Beth was amazing. I learned so much from her and her lectures show how professional she is and how much she loves bio. I am almost sad that the class is over! If she taught 6B I would definitely take her; can't wait to take her for 6C. Beth is so nice and willing to help everybody with questions. I wish more teachers were like her.
Beth is an amazing professor she's very passionate about Biology & she makes Bio fun. Its not an easy class and she expects you to learn the material thoroughly but she is more than willing to help you. If you want to learn the material I highly recommend taking her class. Her tests are hard but STUDY and read the questions VERY CAREFULLY.
I hate Biology because of her.The subject isn't hard, it is her who had made it ridiculously hard.Thank you very much, Mrs. McPartlan.
Seemed extremely nice at first, but actually she wasn't. Hard exams. She is so fake!
She's a really good and friendly teacher, but you need to study and read the book on your own while also attending all the lectures/labs (make sure you go!). Her study guides explain what topics to focus on reading in the textbook. Her tests are challenging, but if you study properly an A/B range is possible. I really enjoyed this class overall.
She may give hard exams, but her passion for biology is really encouraging! I learned so much from her class and just from her personal research experiences that she discussed. If you have any passion for biology, I really would encourage you to take her class! She isn't fake at all and is genuinely a great professor.
One of the best teachers I've ever had! Yes, her course is hard, but if you put the work in by attending class, taking good notes, asking questions during lab and office hours, and studying thoroughly for exams, you will be fine. She is very passionate about biology and makes the material more accessible. She truly prepares you for the next class.
Tons of hard assignments and one poster presentation. Lectures are O.K. Make sure you pay attention to EVERY THING she says. During lab she isn't very helpful. She will get up to help for maybe 10min, but most of the time she just sit and chat with her TA.
Great biology teacher. I preferred her for Bio 6A, but I still love her teaching style which is professional and enthusiastic. Ignore the rating below. There are 3 major assignments plus the big poster presentation, which do take effort. Lab is free time for work, geared toward your research project, so the statement underneath is totally wrong.
She's a very motherly and naggy professor, she is more helpful in office hours than in lab and lecture, eat or drink coffee before coming to her lab, and DO NOT fall asleep in her lab and if she sees you, you will never hear the end of it!!!
She seem to be nice at first, but she is really moody. It's true in lab all she do is talk with the loud TA. She even asked us, more than once, to wait and let her finish the story instead of answering our questions. The exams are fine, be sure to read the questions very carefully. And don't sleep in her class!
Mrs. McPartlan is nice and helpful, however she gives tricky tests. Study carefully, don't skip things, make sure to read every single word in her tests, and you'll be fine.
beth is so passionate about what she teaches! i really like her and she is not hard as many people say. if you record the lectures and take GOOD notes from them you will get an A. lab is a little bit harder. overall she is a vary good teacher
I like how welcoming and smiley she always is. She's nice. But, after you take her tests, you might wanna cry yourself to sleep cause I totally did. Her tests are very comprehensive. Be EXTRA careful when reading test questions and always pay attention in class. Everything she says is important, even if it's personal stories...
She gives hard exams, to compensate for the fact she can't teach. Ask her any bio related questions that are not on her slides, and she won't know the answer. Labs are easy, she will bored you to death with her personal stories.
I love bio because of McP. Her lectures are amazing and contain all the essentials you need. That being said there is no time for messing around. Take the class serious and put in your best effort if you want to pass. Note-taking is a MUST and develop good study habits. She really prepares you for future science courses. Stay alert during exams.
Beth is a good teacher. If you want to get an A in her class, go to her lectures. The book goes into much greater detail than what she expects you know, but Beth is very particular. I got a B, and never went to lecture but I studied heavily from the book and her study guides. She is hard but not a bad teacher, she will help you if you need it.
Beth gives very well-rehearsed speeches every lecture, but you must supplement her lectures with studying from the textbook. Lab exams are just as comprehensive as lecture exams. Ridiculously difficult. Don't skip even a single day of studying.
The tests are all multiple choice, however that doesn't necessarily mean that they're easy. You need to put the work in almost every night to get the results that you want. A little studying each night for this class, like in many others, will help you out a lot in the long run. Lectures are sometimes long but always full of valuable information.
Professor McPartlan is fantastic! Others may be saying that her exams are difficult or tricky, but if you go to her lectures (which are easy to understand) you'll have no trouble at all. She is always available to answer your questions, and cares very much about everything she lectures on. I would gladly take this class again!
This course is based around a group research project that if done right, will be a very beneficial learning experience. She doesn't expect that you come up with a complicated topic to research, as long as you put in the time and effort to make the project a reality. Make sure to thoroughly understand material for tests as they are tricky at times.
McPartlan is awesome. Don't be afraid of taking her class. You will learn a lot. Her tests are tricky and hard but if you pay attention to what she said in class, you will be okay. Her lecture is amazing which helps you understand the concepts easily.
McPartlan is super nice and caring, and we need more professors like her! Very clear, always willing to explain and answer questions. I personally do not enjoy biology at all, and I struggled, but she made it bearable and even interesting sometimes. Take her!
Definitely recommend her!! She is so enthusiastic and caring professor! She showed a lot of videos in her lecture and it's interesting! She gave her advice on the project and always cared about her students! For the test, review her slides and record her lecture if possible. Participate every class and lab sessions! Do your best! Good luck! :D
Professor McPartlan was the best of best professors at De Anza. Had multiple choice type of test for all 3 midterm exams, 2 lab exams, and 1 final. Must read book, study hard, and you'll survive through her class. Would recommend to anyone love biology and get ready to take the challenges. Good luck!
Her homework and quizzes were hard. You REALLY have to put in the work to pass this class. You can't slack this class, and expect to pass. Shes the type to make tests/quizzes/hw extremely hard AND TRICKY because she wants us to earn it. Its a little unfair for students who aren't good with tests, but if you take this class seriously then take it.
Professor McPartlan is the best of the best Biol teachers at De Anza. Her lecture is well organized and super clear, which is really helpful for tests. Her lab is fun and fair. There is no lab report, but her lab exam is hard. Her tests are tough and TRICKY, but if you are Biol major and really want to have knowledge, take her! Highly recommend!
It's true, her tests are tricky. Great teacher though, and great person. She comes off as super sweet, and she is, but beware- she is no pushover! Lectures and labs are fun. Be prepared to be told off for sleeping/talking in class (rightly so).
I've never had a professor so passionate about her students! She genuinely cares for each student. Her lectures are organized and extremely helpful. I rarely ever referred to the textbook. Her tests can be tough, but as long as you put in the work and listen to her lectures, you'll get an A!
She is great and loves what she teaches, which makes it so much easier to understand. Her exams are tough because you need to know the material really well to be able to answer her questions. There are many little points online, so don't miss those! Her tests are difficult, but they just prepare you for the following biology classes.
Let's be clear it's a 6 unit class (Most math were 5 or less) so treat it like one, u'll do good. She is the best you can ask for if you are willing to work and learn something. She's passionate about the subject, lectures are well structured, clear and funny. Exams are multiple choices but based heavily on understanding rather memory
Her exams are heavy. You really have to know every single thing of what you're studying and know them precisely to do well in her exams. But she will help you. She's accessible outside of class and is willing to help you. Her personality is just straight up amazing.
She is super passionate when she teaches. She tries her hardest to make sure the class understands the material instead of just memorizing it. She's very helpful especially when you ask her questions personally. Her tests are hard and requires you to really understand the material to ace it. Study hard & you'll be fine. She's sweet & funny too!
Best biology professor I've EVER taken! She is so passionate about what she does. She knows the material so she'll be able to help you with any questions you can possibly come up with. She truly cares about her students but if you don't work hard, you'll have a hard time during her multiple choice tests.
Professor McPartlan was an amazing teacher. Her lectures really showed you how much she enjoyed biology. Tests are very tricky but if you study beforehand, there should only be one clear answer. Time constraints are not the problem for her exams, you either know the answer or you don't. STUDY. Take her if you want to learn; not an "easy A."
Amazing professor. She gives clear lectures. Examples are given in forms of analogies for the more difficult topics. Print her lab manual because a lot of work will be done within it. She offers extra credit thru mastering bio and curves the exams by 1 point. Lecture exams are difficult, but lab exams are more straight forward and easier.
Wonderful professor and she is very passionate. You will work hard for an A and she will do her best to be accessible outside of class and online. There is a lot small online quizzes to complete and you have to be sure to check what is due daily. Overall I would recommend her if you really want to learn bio.
One of the best Bio teachers in De Anza! I love her. She's very caring and so clear in her lectures. She always tries her best to break down hard concepts and makes sure you understand. Exams can be a bit difficult but not too bad. Gives lots of chances for extra credits. Too bad she does not teach Bio 6B. Take her and you won't regret it!
As a person she is super sweet and amazing. Her lectures are amazing and you will learn a lot. BUT, her tests are the most difficult tests I have taken in my life. I think the SAT and ACT were easier. She uses a lot of trick questions/ d. all of the above or E. only A & B type questions. If you're not a good test taker like me, don't take her.
No need to read textbook to get an A. I hate to study until I join her class. She's really inspirational, and makes you want to study hard. The first test n two lab exams really easy, so try to nail it for an A. Just let you know in the class you're supposed to dissect animals. It'd be fine if you won't do it, but it's my most precious memory.
She is a very nice professor and explains the materials clearly. I never read the textbook. Go to her lecture and jot down the things she talks about on the ppt. Remember to do the online homework that it really helps you to understand deeply of certain topics. Exams are hard and tricky. Stick to the questions on the study guide and you will pass.
All you need to do is record all the lectures to pass this class. Her exams are just based on her lectures, not the book. Her tests are ridiculous, all the questions asked are open to interpretation and you have to argue to get the points back. She is also rude to students
Just awful. Tests are super hard, she gets really moody, especially if people come late. If you don't do well on the tests (which are impossible!!) your grade is destroyed, which destroys your GPA since it's 6 credits. Super unhelpful. Over 1/3 of my class dropped. Bio majors beware, don't take her!!! Nice person, terrible teacher.
Overall really great prof that I learned a lot from! HOWEVER her exams are quite difficult, as she expects you to know the material inside and out. If English isn't your first language, you might find the wording on her tests to be quite tricky. She responds to emails quickly and is really approachable during her office hours. Would recommend!
Professor McPartlan is a nice teacher but she gets moody especially when you arrive to lab late. She is very accessible even outside office hours. However, I would not recommend people that are not good at multiple choice tests to take her (her tests are super hard, take her if you are up for a challenge i guess?)
If you work hard, she will be the best professor. Although the tests are really tricky, she tries her best to give some points out, and lab exams will help your grade boosted. I got D on the first exam but ended with B. Of course I did my best to boost up my grade, but my grade wouldn't be boosted this much if I didn't have her.
Her lectures are simple to understand. Her test, no. It is extremely confusing. You don't know one thing, you can't eliminate anything because of her answer choices. Usually choice A-C is some statement. Choice D would be like "A&C is correct" or "A&B is correct." Choice D would be "none of the above" or "all the above."..I cry
-record her lectures and watch all the videos cuz a lot of small details are on the tests -55% of questions on study guides r on the exam/final. -shes nice about deadlines for the project and feedback -she grades rlly hard on the biome presentation so be prepared -pay attention during field trips for lab exam! -do the extra credit; it saves you
her lecture needs you to record because her exam will including everything she talks in the lecture. Be prepared to read and study, a lot!!! Biology is a tough class. Work really hard otherwise you will not get good grades. She is very nice and very willing to help her students. Ask her questions in the office hour and enjoy her amazing lecture.
I had an issue during a class and if you put in the effort, she will work with you to help you succeed. She checked on me during a rough time. I've never had such a caring teacher. Make sure you work on the hw throughout the week. Everything is due on sunday but it's a reasonable amount. Very clear on what she wants! Don't skip class, it's only 1/w
mcpartlan is one of the best professors that I have had at de anza. yes it was an extremely tedious class that took a lot of time and effort, but its a bio class so I expected that much. tests are all mc and they get tricky but if you pay close attention to her lectures and read the book, you should be okay. lab exams are pretty straight forward.
prof mcpartlan is the sweetest. if you put in work and study everyday and hard, youll do well. shes also super understanding of rough situations - shell work with you to succeed. ive had lots of great profs but she was so amazing i had to actually leave a rating for her and i never rate profs. take her and work for ur grade, youll be rewarded
To be blunt, she's an amazing prof, and the lectures are super detailed, but you're gonna have to work your tail off studying for lecture exams. Lab is easy, just identifying things under a microscope, but lab exams are also super hard. Basically, unless you already have a good sense of bio, don't take this course with other time-heavy courses.
Her class is hard. be ready to study a lot and I really mean a lot because she is very detailed on her lectures and expects you to understand all the details as she will test you on it. I didn't use the textbook just recorded her lectures and studied those. she will help you a lot if she sees you are trying. take her if you are ready studying.
Elizabeth is great! I took her class online, which was a lot of reading. But that is expected with an online class. Her practice exams for finals are very clear and if you study them well, you should get an A. She is also very understanding when it comes to life coming up. She offers extra credit too!
She is very good at teaching. Her exam are pretty difficult tho. If you are taking 6A ask TA during lab period what area study for for ur exams. Professor Mcpartlan is very nice to her students, even during the pandemic she is able to provide a fair exam. You have to work hard in her class and do ALL the online assignments they are important.
Dont take her if the class is online. Instead of providing accommodations, she increased the workload for the class and required several group projects with multiple groups (it was a mess). For exams, she decreased the allotted time to 40 min from 50, but kept the difficulty and # of questions the same. Closed book and live-proctored exams.
She's good IRL, HORRIBLE online. Didn't make accommodations and increased the workload for the class. Required several group projects with multiple groups (messy) and increased the # of labs. For exams, she reduced the time limit from 50 min to 40 min, but kept the difficulty and # of questions the same. Closed book and live-proctored exams.
The amount of group work required for this class was what ruined it for me. If you were assigned a good group you probably would have been fine, but I ended up doing most of the work for my group and will probably get the same grade as them. Coordinating an experiment over text message with 5 other people over 10 weeks was extremely unpleasant.
Legit she made no accommodations for remote learning or COVID... 3 lecture exams, 2 lab exams, & 1 final (all live proctored, terrible time restraints, & tricky multiple answer questions). For example, the average score for the 2nd lab exam was 30% & the final + lecture exam 3 was 80 min for 80 questions combined. Also 2 messy group projects.
The only thing she is good at is giving advice on how to study. NO STUDY GUIDES. I failed every exam regardless of how well I did on assignments and quizzes. Unless you have incredible memory dont take any class this professor teaches. Asking what will be in the test will get you no where she wont help. 60% of grade is based on exams.
Your grade depends on only 3 exams and then the final. The homework and quizzes barely help your grade. She is nice, approachable, and almost always online to answer emails/office hours. She grades hard on little things, so make sure to ask questions even if it seems minor.
This class was not fun, for an intro bio class it was just sooo overly hard. There was no way to improve and learn from past mistakes bcuz we couldn't see what we got wrong. Be careful during tests bcuz she will check if you leave the quiz tab to search every answer. Test averages started so low but increased through the quarter
To be completely honest, this class was a mess. Several group projects that were very unorganized, very hard exams (80 questions in 80 minutes for the final), and she graded very harshly. I knew of several people in this class that were also struggling through everything. Although she is very nice and approachable, her class was very hard.
the worst professor ever for online learning. the epitome of does not care about students. Her tests are ridiculous with the time constraint and she assigns group projects that were so messy yet does not provide any leeway for students. DO NOT TAKE HER WITH HARD COURSES
the worst professor ever. she creates a very hostile learning environment and questions are very nitpicky and specific. please do not take her if you value your mental health
Her labs and exams are so unorganized you don't know what you are doing. She tends to give you 1 min per question on the exam. Each week other science classes have one lab. But her she gives out from 3-5 labs per week, and her labs are really long.
very willing to help students and her exams and labs are doable!!! really enjoy learning new things in the class and wish I could've taken her in person but the course load is VERY very heavy so I'd avoid taking it with too many other hard classes. lots of labs every week and the material isn't something you can just memorize and cram
very nice in office hours. 3 lecture, 2 lab exams. labs and assignments due sunday night. i memorized and understood the information on the slides and found the first exam to be reasonably difficult; it made me think but all info had been in lecture. workload is big but doable if your other classes aren't too demanding. pay attention to details.
Taking this class online was horrible. Your labs & assignments basically don't even matter because your grade really depends on your exams. During exams, she watches you through zoom while everyone's mic has to be on so it is super distracting even when the volume is all the way down. There is only 1 lecture day for 1 hour. DO NOT take it online.
Please do yourself a favor and not take this class. Whenever her students ask for extra help or a change in things, she always says how she would do the same for her face to face class but... this is an ONLINE class. With everything that is going on, she has no sympathy for anyone. She doesn't teach us and she expects so much in return.
Surprised @ neg reviews. Tests are extremely hard, requiring you to know material thoroughly. not just what the lectures say but be able to apply those ideas in hypothetical situations. Online format makes this even tougher due to minimal interaction. But she obviously puts a lot of effort into the class unlike other professors I have.
The issue with this class was that there was almost no lecture, we were expected to memorize dozens of slides for closed note tests. She hosts zoom class for only an hour per week, and if we wanted to learn more we had to go to her early office hours. Zoom proctoring with mic on (so annoying). Do not rely on extra credit or curve, they are minimal.
this class makes you work your butt off. This was my 1st quarter and I didn't study well. pulled all-nighters before every test and got bad grades. don't procrastinate. many students did, which is why they got the grade they did. she works so hard to make her lecture slides thorough. Just make sure you give urself enough time to absorb the info. GL
Elizabeth is definitely a good professor, but if you take her online your study will 90% based on your only reading. Her material is funny, but she doesn't have a living explanation, you must read and study by yourself. As an international student(English as 2nd language) I can accept the teaching way because the strange biowords are better to read
i wish she taught for every bio class. works so hard on lecture slides and preparing labs and info to students and is always available to answer questions and help. it really is a tough class though so i would not recommend ever taking with other really heavy courses i had to put 110% in the class but it was worth it in my opinion
Her choice of textbook is the best I have seen. She knows exactly what students need in a basic bio10 class. Instruction is clear. The test is clear and not hard for me at all. It is easy to lose few points on this and that, but she gives EC chance to help you reach A. It is not an easy class, so get ready to read. Do the work, and it is not hard.
I was really excited to start the Biology series with a seemingly 'good' professor. However, I was faced with near impossible exams (40-50% averages), no direction even in office hours, and EXTREME testing conditions. This class made me cry, want to change my major, and rethink my career choice. She is a lazy, insensitive, and harsh professor.
Was excited given the positive reviews but unfortunately, I completely disagree with the positive reviews. The homework load is a lot for every week; I am talking on average 6-9 assignments. The worst part of all is the exams which are unecessarily difficult. I believe she is a kind hard working individual. The course however is unrealistic.
If you're a transfer/pre-med STAY AWAY! Believe the prev. comments this class is terrible & prof. says she is teaching like a UC course. I'm at a community college and that's the expectation. 1x a week for lecture & read everything on our own. Labs have you drawing like Picasso for hours on end. Tests are unnecessarily brutal. Do not recommend.
She is a great professor who spends a lot of time in her class and lectures to make sure students understand the more difficult concepts. You definitely have to work hard to get an A, but if you schedule ahead of time it will be manageable. The online class was mainly asynchronous except for when taking exams. Would highly recommend.
I took this class and it was mostly asynchronous with synchronous classes on wednesdays to take exams. There were around 6 exams, 3 lab and 3 lecture. The exams are tough, but they are based on her lecture slides. Just study those slides and you'll be good. Going to office hours is also helpful and she's responsive to emails. Good choice.
I took Elizabeth's bio6A online class, and now I transferred to UC Berkeley, I can say you will not find any berkeley bio professor exam format harder as Elizabeth. Or I practiced too much on her class that I feel berkeley biology classes are super easy. It's worth to take her class, you will learn a lot and useful!
First of all, she might be a great prof in person, but online is a mess. You will lose points for everything and anything no matter how nitpicky. Didn't memorize every bit of info word for word? You'll fail the tests. Every question is a trick question. Very passive aggressive and always out to blame you instead of helping. Stay away, good luck.
Tests are hard and proctored very strictly. That being said, slides and lecture will prepare you for the tests. Professor herself is very kind and this class honestly sets you up well in terms of discipline towards studying. Worth it!
Actually one of the better bio profs at DA. Exams are tough, but not impossible. They are completely based on her study guides and slides (study them at least 5 days before her exams!). Extremely clear expectations regarding course content. She may appear rude at times, however she does mean well. She also curves at the end of the course.
Really great professor! This class was NOT easy. The content is really interesting and if you really make the effort to learn it, you will do well but again you have to earn it. There are some EC opps, but def don't depend on it to save your grade. Overall, if you like bio and are willing to put in the time and energy, I would highly recommend!
Let me start off by saying I took a W for this course and it didn't set me back so I'm not saying this out of bitterness, but I have no idea why she has good reviews. The test average was around 55-60%, and about half my class ended up dropping the class. Use office hours, but she doesn't admit when she's the problem and always blames the students.
If you're looking for an easy A this class isn't for you. The weekly lectures, labs, and assignments are a LOT, and completing them is crucial to getting an A. The tests themselves can also be quite difficult as there are many trick questions. If you have a good work ethic and value learning more than grades this class might be suitable for you.
she is a nice person outside of class... but, during class, she is very defensive and always changes her mind. she can never stick to one thing. her class was interesting, but her exams are very difficult. it is usually 27 questions, 35-40 min, the questions range in length and the answer choices are always confusing too.. there is no winning...
Professor Mcpartlan will make you work for every single point of your final grade. This rigorous class will take up most, if not all of your weekly study time, so be prepared to read the textbook and do *all* the required assignments in Canvas. BTW - all her exams are directly based on the lecture slides or lab lecture videos, so read carefully!!
I found her lectures wonderful and very informative, and her labs were not only fun, but also intriguing. When it comes to testing, you be VERY time constraint. In my opinion, the question difficulty was not bad at all, however you would only get very little time (1 - 2 minutes per question) and these questions are not the quick to do MCQs either.
If you care about your gpa, don't take this class. The averages for the exams are extremely low and when students ask for help she blames the students and says they don't study enough (most of the things we studied were not on the exam). She is very sweet overall but just not very caring when it comes to students succeeding in her class.
This professor is a nice and sweet person. In general, the class is challenging and has a heavier workload. Some of the topics could be found really long and going pretty deep. The exam would be devastating if you didn't study her lecture and the materials. good luck for everyone hope to take this class.
OK, let's debunk. I struggled in this course for 2/3 of the quarter, but was able to redeem since there are a lot of points towards the end of the quarter. 1/2 of the class dropped too soon. 1. Prof. McPartlan: extremely supportive but don't expect a pushover. She is reasonable and willing to go over materials personally if you reach out. .cont
The professor has easy to read lectures and plenty of useful resources for learning, however her exams are going to be very difficult for most people as they require you to memorize many obscure facts and give you barely any time to think.
Your GPA will go down. Constantly blamed students for low test scores (the first average was in the 60s). Exam material is miscellaneous minor details that many students overlook, and the whole quarter will be spent trying to raise your grade from the abysmally low exam and quiz scores; far too little time on exams for highly conceptual questions.
This class was a little harder than expected, but overall worth it as I feel that I learned a lot. Her lectures are clear and getting to see the organisms in class during the animal kingdom unit was cool.
Not a bad person but has her days Gives a lot of busy work Online lectures are long wordy paragraphs.
Genuine insanity
Really kind and knowledgeable professor. I learned so much from her class. The tests were not easy due to how much content this course covers, but they're doable as long as you study the lectures/labs well and give yourself enough time to ask questions.
Mcpartlan is genuinely such a sweet and caring professor. 3 lecture exams + 2 lab exams. Exams are very difficult! She does offer some extra credit throughout the quarter. You will need to spend a good amount of time studying for this class. Labs are not bad, you do not need to stay the full 3 hours. Not an easy class whatsoever, but is reasonable.
Textbook is around $80, class is pretty easy and prof is very kind and respectful. No complains. I only took for general ed credit but I loved the class and the way everything was arranged.
If you need to take this class for general ed, take her class. textbook is 80-100$, you show up once a week for 2 hours and a couple online assignments. Put in the work and it will be reflected in your grade.
McPartlan was an ok teacher to me, she kinda taught us but relied on her lecture videos to carry us. The tests were overly hard. To pass them, I would've had to sink 10-15 hours of study time into learning and memorizing her lectures.
I will never take this teacher again for any course. The grading that she does is on a horrible scale. The exams are all multiple choice but if you guessed 3 answers when there were only 2 right answers, minus points. She is nice on the other hand, I just don't see myself in her class again. The grading was the worst thing about this class.
nice teacher but I will NEVER take her again for this course (she is retiring so yippie) but to those who will encounter her again, exams are BRUTAL and no matter how much you study you will still know nothing. study does not match exams. would not recommend taking her if you want a good grade, or to pass.
This one's on me for taking a hybrid class. Had a really tough time learning the syllabus myself. Exams were not fairly graded. Given an hour to finish 40 questions that were mostly "select the correct statements" with tons of choices. I admit the questions get you thinking but the time pressure screws up your thought process. Very nice person tho.
Nice person and accessible out of class/helps if you are struggling, but exams were extremely difficult nonetheless. Exam questions were multiple choice/select all and based on her lectures. If you have the option, take another professor if you want to save your GPA, especially if you're taking other science classes in the same quarter.
she is actually fine, not super easy nor super hard, you will learn a lot in this class, and get ready to read, record her lectures and study her slides and read the textbook, make sure you spend 20+ hours per week to study and you will get an A for sure, her lab exam is definitely easier tho
