Tests are hard, but not unreasonable. Only teacher for this class, so good providence!
Make sure to memorize the ppt slides.
she is very nice. But you must read the text book .she teaches with power point, which is a waste! Her exams are very hard.
I am not a biology major at all, but this lady made me excited about microbiology. This was a hard class - i'm not going to lie, but since she is so excited about this topic of study it made it exciting for me to learn. I thought she was a great teacher.
Lectures straight from powerpoint, doesn't vary at all. Exams are very tricky, but grades fairly. Make sure you get a good TA for lab or it will make no sense.
You have to study for this class. It seems really hard at first, but it gets easier. I started off the semester thinking I would make no better than a C but I will make a B. GO TO CLASS!
You cannot get away in this class without studying the notes thoroughly. Sometimes she tries too hard to convince her students that what she is saying is interesting. I did not appreciate the arrangement of a lecture test and lab practical back to back mid semester. On the whole she taught pretty well though and seems like a nice enough person.
Class is not mandatory, but you're an idiot if you don't show up. Her tests are extremely hard, and she prides herself on that fact (which honestly is a bit stupid...people need validation to do well in a subject). She's quite friendly, but doesn't seem to understand that her students have other classes that are equally important.
She's nice and her lectures are interesting BUT she moves fast so print off the notes. I'm not gonna lie, this class was very hard. Her test questions actually require thinking so you've GOT TO memorize your notes so you can apply the information. Studying is essential and I mean study, like every day if you want an A! It's hard work.
Cracks lame jokes in an attempt to be cool. Tells you not to memorize notes, but MEMORIZE them AND be able to apply on tests. Tests extremely difficult, gives you scenarios so learn how to pick out what she's actually asking. Must study every day. Lab was easy, depending on your TA. She really prides herself on having a low class average for tests.
I HIGHLY reccomend that you purchase a tape recorder and record her classes. Relisten to her lectures immediately after class and take your own notes. STUDY. material is applied but interesting after the second test.
This is the hardest class I have ever had...not because the material was difficult, its the way that she tests you on the material. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! memorize the notes!Really try to do well in lab because it will save your grade. You can get an A in this class but it is NOT easy. Print off the slides, read the chapters, make note cards, and pray
Now this class is not as hard as people are saying it. All you have to do is give yourself about a week before each exam to memorize her notes. If you can do that you will do fine. If you do not study then you could fail this course only because the test are kind of specific.
It is a difficult class, but not an impossible class. I got an A in it. Your best bet is to go to lecture and read/study the book. The slides help, but won't get even a C in the class. Elizabeth is also more than fair when it comes to grading. Oh, and don't forget about the lab. The lab midterm and final are the hardest test in the class!
Sent a rude reply to my concerned email. Lacking tact.
I really enjoyed this class. It is not easy but if you study and learn, not memorize, the material you will do fine. She is quirky and fun to listen to. Also was very helpful during office hours. I thought she was more than fair with grading.
This class was extremely hard. I got a C in the class and I am not a C student. I've never tried so hard in a class and not succeeded. Her tests are very hard and all critical thinking, no memorization.
The best way to succeed in this class is to study diligently and stay on TOP of the material. Attend class, take excellent notes (I found that downloading the powerpoint to my laptop and taking notes on that to be helpful), STUDY, and be diligent in lab. As for studying for exams (those are VERY hard), I solely studied the powerpoint slides.
If you want to make an A take this class ONLY if you have a light load for your other courses. The work you have to do to keep up is ridiculous and more than any other class I've had, including chemistry 100/110. Labs are hard, tests are the hardest I've ever taken in college (I'm a Jr). She is the only instructor for this class. Good luck.
She's rude and not compassionate at all. Not willing to help if you ask for it. Take it at a community college.
There are no shortcuts to getting an A in this class. I repeat, NO SHORTCUTS! You have to read the book, read her chapters, do copious amounts of work outside the class, memorize her notes (which are extremely long) - which would earn an A in any other class. . .but not in this class.
I 100%, absolutely, completely do NOT recommend anyone take this professor. You can study all night and day and she will put something on a test that you have never covered. There is virtually no way to do good. And, unlike other science courses, lab is likely to bring your grade down. Please, please, please take 310 or take this somewhere else.
Contrary to what many people say about this class, it is not too bad. A lot of studying is required, but doing well is possible. Lecture is very interesting!
JUST DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. I don't care if you have to, find a way out of taking it. Seriously, you could study for WEEKS and still BOMB the tests. The scores on tests would range from 12-100 which means NO CURVE.(also she ignored my emails) Moral of the story..Find somewhere else to take this class.
Her tests are hard, but she gets the questions right from the powerpoint slides, if you go to class and study the slides you'll be fine. You literally have to memorize her notes and then be able to apply it in order to do well on her tests. It requires a lot of work, but it is possible.
I LOVED her. She is a wonderful teacher who is willing to take the extra time to help you. The class is very difficult but if you study and come to lecture and pay attention, you can do good. The key thing for this class is to study study study. But Mrs. McPherson is a wonderful teacher. Her lectures are always clear and her sense of humor helps!
I studied all day and night and still didn't pass. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE TO!!! TAKE 310 OR TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! I was one point from a D and she didn't even get me that one point!!!!!!! AGAIN DON'T TAKE IT
Idk why everyone is saying that this professor is terrible! Yes, you HAVE to study to do well. But it isn't impossible. Go to every lecture and lab and pay attention. You MUST buy the textbook and READ the chapters before exams, do the online homework, and go to lecture and a B is definitely possible and maybe an A if you study a whole lot
She is an awesome teacher and super helpful if you go to her office hours! Yes, tests are hard and require a lot of effort, but you get out of the class, what you put in. If you attend almost every class, office hours when needed, memorize/understand the notes and are able to apply what you learn, a B is definitely doable.
I loved this class. It was very interesting. Elizabeth is a great teacher and she's very excited about what she teaches. This class is a lot of work. Take this class during the summer; it is easier than during the semester. Tests are hard but come from power points. Lab exams are HARD. Lecture exams multiple choice. Teacher approachable. Made an A.
Hey guys! So it is impossible to get an A in this class unless you study literally everyday and read the textbook. Great teacher, but her tests are super hard!!! You have to work hard just to get a B or a C. About 2/5 of the class dropped to give you an idea, but she is the only one that teaches this class! Good luck!!!
This class was horrible. She goes through lecture so fast the material is very difficult to learn. You need to read the textbook and study everyday. Her exams are impossible! She also is not very helpful. Do not take this class if you don't have to!!!
Hey guys! So i loved McPherson as person and as a teacher, but her tests are AWFUL. ABSOULUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. The material is all new and extremely specific. you have to study all the time. I am probably going to have to retake this class, and i thought i was gonna make it through no problem after the first month or 2. The disease test is the worst!!
The class is really interesting, and the professor is soo nice. The tests are extremely hard though. If you define everything on the concepts maps and learn everything you should be good. Lab exams...you're gonna fail em. However somehow it just works out.
Horrible course execution. There is no room for error on any assignment. TAs quizzes can be either extremely hard or very easy. Some TAs are much harder than others and don't really care if you learn or not. I've had many very difficult classes at UT, this one is just poorly done. Do not attempt to address these issues, as you won't change anything
Can't speak for the Bio class but I thought she was an excellent teacher! Very helpful, the exams are more on applying the knowledge to everyday life situations than knowing every little detail. Lab is difficult, don't feel too discouraged if you get below a B on lab exams. The lecture exams are OK but you do have to study daily. Overall good class
The class is very interesting. Pay attention in lecture to the examples given. Recording the lectures helped me the most.
Professor McPherson is hands down the worst professor I've had. The online homework and clicker quizzes are graded for accuracy over things you haven't learned yet, the lab is far too difficult for an entry level class, and exams are okay, but it doesn't even matter because everything else in the class pulls your grade down, no extra credit period.
I have never experienced a worse teacher/professor in my entire academic career. She gives a ludicrous amount of work, pop quizzes, and designs horribly unnecessarily long labs filled with useless garbage. Be prepared to completely neglect the rest of your classes in order to get a passing grade. Absolutely pathetic execution of a class.
McPherson is hilarious and is always willing to help in any way she can. The lab quizzes are ridiculous for no reason, however the actual labs aren't too bad. For the lecture exams, you have to understand the material and be able to apply it rather than just memorizing, so they are difficult. If you put in the time, an A is possible.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you absolutely need it, take it at a community college. I literally worked my butt of this semester to try and get a good grade in this class. However there is a possibility that I may end up failing the class because the exams are IMPOSSIBLE. Save GPA. I've screwed mine over by takk g this class.
She is always happy to help you and respond to email. The lecture is durable and interesting but the lab is little too much information. As well, still people make perfect score for exam. Cant expect easy science course in college and lazy work. YOU CAN DO IT. take time but the info is connective and if you understand the core, you ll be fine.
My favorite professor I've had yet. Elizabeth is so nice, and incredibly helpful one-on-one. She does whatever she can to help you understand a topic. Go to her office hours!! She doesn't reteach a lecture, but if you go in with questions, she re-explains concepts in a way that is super easy to understand. I've never had a more helpful professor.
While this subject is difficult, Professor McPherson is very passionate and knowledgeable about Micro. You will learn as long as you attend lecture. Tests can be difficult, but that's where you as a student must put the work in by taking the information she gives you and applying it. She is great in communication, and keeps you constantly informed
Really enjoyed her class. Excellent teacher
Ms. Mcpherson is the only teacher for this course. She is a great professor who truly cares for her students, however the course itself (microbiology) is extremely difficult even with a good professor. There is a lot of homework and lab work for this course, and you need to study weeks ahead of time for exams. Take this with an easy load of classes
Elizabeth is honestly one of my favorite teachers I have ever had at UT. She made micro manageable. You'll do well if you go to class, do your work, and ask questions. She looks for people who put in the effort. Go talk to her in office hours if you need help. The tests are difficult but if you put in the time, you'll do fine. Definitely recommend!
This class is maddening. I am a junior in college and never in my LIFE have I taken class so hard. Up to 6 lab exercises to read between wed.-fri., 3 research papers that are EASILY 30 pages each, & 3 exams that last 3 hours to take (no. I am not exaggerating.) I took biochemistry during the same semester and this lab was harder that that class!
I went into this class knowing that it would not be an easy class. However, I feel like it would have been much easier with a better professor. Not to say that Mrs. McPherson is a terrible professor, but her exams are nothing like what she teaches in lecture. I studied for exams for a month in advance and still could only get C's.
Dr Mcpherson is an amazing teacher but this class was possibly the hardest I've ever taken. Despite this, I found the material extremely interesting and Mcphersons passion for the subject really shows. I thoroughly enjoyed her lectures. An A is possible, just come in ready to work!
She teaches really well and you will know the material really well, but she tests science material subjectively instead of objectively. It does not matter how well you know the material. You will be unable to take her tests. If you can't put yourself into her mind and think like her, you will fail every time. Do Not Take This Class.
She is by far my favorite teacher I've had at UT!! TAKE HER!! Micro 210 is a difficult class, but she is more than willing to help you. Her tests are application based rather than definition and answer but its definitely doable. You have to study for this class, but that should be expected. You would be missing out if you don't take her.
McPherson is fantastic at teaching MICRO210. I was extremely worried about this class going into it but as long as you take notes and study- it is completely doable. Her exams are written with multiple hints to lead to the answer in case you didn't remember one thing something else in the problem could lead you to the right answer.
I needed this course for Pharmacy School and this course is really hard. The professor is super sweet and she is the only professor that teaches Micro 210. She will try to help if needed. BASICALLY,STUDY EVERYDAY AND UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING! The exam is application based, lab exams are all paragraph questions. Most TA in this course is HARD GRADERS!
difficult. learned a lot though
this class will make you work for it. Her lecture exams and her lab exams are very thorough, so you have to know and study everything. Who you get as your lab TA can make or break your grade since lab counts a lot for the overall grade. Attend lecture because there are clickers and she breaks down the material.
The hardest biology class I've ever taken. It's not the material though, the exams are written as application questions when you do nothing in class but learn it straight forward. I learned so much in this class and my grade didn't reflect this.
One of the most difficult classes I have taken at UT. My GPA is ruined because of this class! She wants you to know every little detail for exams! Lab is fun and interesting, but the exams as very difficult, so get ready to study. I wish I knew how hard this professor was before taking her. Save your GPA and take this class somewhere else!!!
McPherson is one of the most caring and helpful professors I've had at UT. The course is difficult, but that is because the material is and not because she makes it hard. Lab was my least favorite part and the Lab exams were the absolute hardest things to do in the class. If you actually try and put in the effort, should get at least a B.
she is so sweet and funny during class! always ready to help and wants to help. very personable. I am terrible at science and dreaded taking this class but now I am sad about leaving it. keep up with everything and read the book! lab starts out hard to get the hang of but it will get easier. if i can do it, anyone can :)
This professor is hard and she makes you work for your grade. The test is application based and you have a quiz for lab every week. Eventually, you have a lab quiz for 1-20 and then you could also have more than one lab each week to study. Then for the next half (usually after break) you prepare for your unknown at the end and still have a lab exam
Something that really frustrates me about this class.. it is designed so poorly. Although it is a SCIENCE course, perfection in lab is expected. bacteria won't grow? Automatic 60% on your unknown report. She purposely tries to trick on exams, and expects too much time in comparison to credit hours/percentage points .... just avoid her if you can
Going into this class, I was freaked out as I heard that it was super hard. But, if you really know how to study, it won't be a problem for you. Tests are on the lecture, not the book. My biggest tip is: STUDY LAB AS YOU GO! There are quizzes every week in lab and 2 tests. It is way too much info to cram. Make a study guide and add to it each week!
Elizabeth is one of the greatest professors I've had. She is so passionate about what she teaches and she truly wants you to succeed. In order to do so, you must attend all of the lectures, prepare for the lab quizzes & exams, and go to her office hours. Her exams are all application based so you need to know how it all applies to the real world.
Lectures were pre-recorded so I had a chance to take notes before attending lecture. While this made attending lecture a little redundant, I definitely recommend this route. The material is so dense (especially at the end) that it really does help to come to hear the info twice. Elizabeth is passionate and knows what she is talking about!
Elizabeth is very passionate about what she teaches but this class is more difficult than it should be. Her tests are all extremely wordy and I always ran out of time. Lab exams were given on labs we did not complete in person as they were designed to be completed and even though our lab test average was a 50 there was no curve.
I dont think I saw her once during the semester, its really just your class and your TA
Study, don't procrastinate and you should do fine! She is very sweet and would love to help if you ask. She definitely knows what she is talking about. No curves or extra credit so make sure you know your material. I think she is perfectly fair. Lab exams are difficult so study as you go. I personally never read the book and did fine
very hard
She is very knowledgable, respectable, and knows what she is talking about. Office hours will be your best friend. Not much is curved, but she does care about how you are doing in the class. The lab is actually kind of fun.
If you are in the Nursing program, THIS WILL BE ONE OF THE HARDEST CLASSES YOU TAKE. You who are going into the class: YOU MUST STUDY. Create an hour by hour schedule if you need to. I was happy to get above a 70 in this class. Exams are very difficult. Do not mess around. The classes get better than this one. You can do this.
BEWARE: This class is extremely challenging. The exams are insanely hard, lab exams-be prepared to write 5 pages (basically memorize the lab manual, and you'll be fine), and labs-know everything. You must study very hard to pass. At the end, there will be an unknown lab report. Mine was 15 pages. Best advice for exams: Memorize the powerpoints.
Dr. McPherson seems nice at first and the first test isn't impossible. After that it all went downhill. She is extremely unhelpful in office hours, grades so harshly, and lab becomes a nightmare depending on your TA. Going from in person to online sucked for everyone but she made a 3 credit hour course in person feel like a 6 hr course online
Extremely difficult tests. I read the reviews prior and thought Id couldnt be too bad, it is. Really a nice lady but this course will drag you over extremely quickly. Save your GPA and take it at Pelli or something.
one of the hardest classes ive ever taken. tests are pretty much impossible, no matter how much you study. lab isnt bad but the quizzes are incredibly specific and over a ton of information. do yourself a favor and do not take this class.
Hardest class I've ever taken. I'll be taking it for a third time this fall.
This was the hardest class I've taken and was way too much work for a 3 hour course. The instructor was not flexible at all throughout the semester and was very little help in learning the material. She only used lectures to answer questions which felt like a waste of time, since tests were extremely difficult. I would not recommend this class.
McPherson is truly one of the most passionate and inspirational professors at UTK. I am only taking this class for PA requirements during the summer and she makes learning fun and enjoyable. While she does make you work for your grade it is so wroth it because your learn so much. I learned the most in this class of any class at UTK. Enjoyable!!!
Was the head professor for the biol 229 lab and was awful. Literally had no idea who she was. She let's all the TA make different tests which is completely unfair. I met with her and she claimed that she "isn't actually in charge" of BIOL229. So who is? Terrible
I had to take this class for my major, and it was the biggest mistake to just not take this class at a CC and transfer it. For reference, I'm no stranger to hard classes, I got an A in organic chemistry the previous semester. The main issue is that the exams are lightyears more difficult then lecture. Save your GPA while you can.
Lab class and TA was great. THE PROTOCOL FOR THIS LAB MUST BE CHANGED. No one could reach full credit for a bioluminescent clone. Quizzes were difficult and open labs hours make it impossible to work on lab work outside of class, which you HAVE to do if you want a good grade in this class. Experiment run over class time often so don't make plans.
Had to take Micro 329 to graduate for the Micro major. No one in all three sections had above a B average and nothing was done about it. Exam and quiz averages were terrible. The TAs do not know whats going on a provide little to no help. The structure of the course makes it impossible to succeed. Disappointed in the treatment of the students.
McPherson was the only available teacher. It was awful. Her class was 90% nursing students who need a C to pass and she hardly had any of us get there and still refused to curve. I read the reviews before I took the class but figured I could get through it at UTK. Don't do this. I passed somehow but it wasn't worth it. Save your GPA.
Hardest class I've taken thus far!!
I was having trouble and went to her office hours like she suggested, but all she would tell me is to study better. She did not ever try to think of where students were coming from. You have to memorize everything on the slides to do well on test. The exam questions are EXTREMELY wordy.I suggest studying early. Just stay on top of it!
Dr. McPherson is so kind and really cares about her students learning. However, studying WELL before exams is crucial. I found that she uses the same keywords on ppts and tests/quizzes. Really listening to lectures, regular studying, and using the practice questions/ clicker questions is what helped me the most. and reach out if you're struggling!
Not fan of this class. The exams are 10x more difficult than the material for no reason. Labs are fairly easy, but lab quizzes are ridiculously difficult too. Good luck.
The lab takes a lot of time outside of class. The TAs try their best to help you, but they really can't do much. The exams are tough, but hopefully, you do well enough on the other assignments to offset them.
The class is taught by a TA and he was good. This was the most time consuming class in my entire undergrad. The class is literally a lab and the majority of your grade is from 3 exams!? Plus my 3 lab reports were 10, 12, and 18 pages long and they represented 1/3 the weight of the exams! Absolutely ridiculous work load for a 2 credit lab.
A lot of people struggle with this class, but people who I talked to that are struggling still like the professor because she deeply cares for her students! Her tests are more difficult than most other professors that I have taken so far, but she uses them to prepare students for the courses ahead of us that are going to be even more challenging.
This is the hardest course I have taken at UT and I'll be a Senior in the Spring. I've been on the Dean's list every semester I've been here, except this one because of this class. This class is no joke. Do not take it unless you absolutely have to. I read these ratings before I took the class, but thought I was built different. Don't do it.
There is TOO MUCH work for this class to be 2 credits. The format for this class needs to changed ASAP, in order for students to be successful in this class. Worst required class for Micro concentration. This class was a nightmare! Most stressful class I've taken at UTK. Exams/quizzes were extremely difficult.
McPherson genuinely cares about her students. This class is hard, but if you put in the time to study, you will do fine. Go to class and get clicker points because they really boost your grade at the end of the semester. The lab portion pretty much depends on your TA. They make the weekly quizzes and choose the questions on the lab exams.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF IT IS NOT MANDATORY. This class is an insane amount of work for the number of credits and is VERY difficult to pass most people drop with a W. This class TANKED my GPA after studying 2 hours a day.the professor isn't helpful
She gives no help for extremely hard exams except for the lecture slides which in no way reflect how the test questions are asked. Have to spend countless hours teaching yourself all the key points. Doesn't care that the averages of test scores are below passing grades. Take with another teacher or school if possible.
Elizabeth was a very nice lady but her teaching principles were horrible. The tests are nothing like her practice exams even. Every test question is worded in a manner that is very difficult to understand. We were told we couldn't just memorize the information, but have to know how to apply it, yet we were given no resources to practice application
As a senior neuroscience major I can safely say this is the hardest class I have ever taken at this university. This 2 credit class gave me more work than any 4 hr ever has. Exams are fully short answer and take a full 3 hrs to finish. 3 papers that can easily be 18 pgs long and presentations. Avoid at all costs!
Elizabeth McPherson is a wonderful lady who truly cares about her students. The class is very difficult, and the exams make up most of your grade. The lab exams are short answer and the lecture exams are application questions. By putting in quite a bit of studying, you can do well. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! She truly wants to help you succeed.
She is a very caring lady who is knowledgeable and wants to help you succeed. Her exams are extremely difficult and require a massive amount of studying to do decent on them. She gives you all the information you need to know for the exams in the slides so study them and the fine details! Her office hours are also a great resource.
Elizabeth is hands down one of the most intelligent and passionate professors I have ever had. Micro is going to be a hard class no matter where you take it, but Elizabeth gives you all the information to succeed. The class is not impossible if YOU put the work in. She is extremely accessible outside of lecture hours and wants you to succeed.
Worse class I have taken at UTK. I knew that this was going to be a difficult course that required alot of my time and attention this class was way to overwhelming for a micro 210 class.Exams were to hard, no matter how far in advance I would study or how long I would study for, the grade I would receive never reflected my efforts. save your GPA!!!
This class is hard. Elizabeth does a great job at teaching this course but there is no way to make it easy. It requires alot of work and time. Lectures are mandatory with clickers everyday, but they help boost your grade. The lab is hard and has a quiz everyday. There are also two finals and a big lab report due at the end, which is alot.
Professor McPherson is a nice person, but a terrible teacher. She reads directly off the slides and the tests are written like you are a PHD student. This class was required for my major but it was made me want to drop my major because this had nothing to do with being a nurse. Do not take her. Look for any other option.
Microbiology with Professor McPherson is challenging, but she genuinely wants you to succeed. Studying the slides and using resources like Unstuck ai can really help you prepare. Attend office hours - she's very accessible and eager to help.
