If I had the opportunity to go back in time and not take her class I would. Her lectures are too dense with information often confusing students. She is a new lecturing professor and this definitely shows. Find a different biochem professor for 285 I beg you.
Very fast information-dense lectures, unclear what she wants from you in the exams. I never walked out of an exam thinking that I had aced it, no matter how much I had studied. It's obvious that she knows her info but she doesn't really know how to break it down for inexperienced students. I guess this will improve over time.
Shes a new teacher, she clearly lacks experience but this is the only way for her to gain some. She cares a lot about helping her students and is readily available outside of class. Her exams are somewhat difficult and it is unclear at times what to study for the exam. Her slides could use some work, but theyll get better with time.
It was apparent that this was her first year teaching, especially at the beginning of the semester. As the class went on, her teaching greatly improved. Her tests are difficult considering the large amount of material covered, so be prepared to study. With this said, she is very helpful if you reach out to her for help and offers some extra credit.
While she's very nice outside of class, please do not take this class. As other reviewers have stated its incredibly difficult to figure out what will be on exams. The only positive is the chances for extra credit but with how difficult the exams are its borderline required to even do remotely well.
No hw so little chances to practice the material and minimal clicker questions during class. First semester teaching and it is clear. Very Hard exams for a 200 level class. Hard for her to explain difficult concepts simply or at all really. Take w a diff prof. Little to no scaling even when whole class bombs exams. Quizzes often unrelated to class
She cannot make the materials clear and understandable for students. You can never predict what she expects you to know for the exam.
I got a 61 on the first exam (which she later did state the purpose of the first exam is to wake people up, which is definitely fair) however, after meeting with her weekly after class/attending office hours and TA hours I am on track to getting an A in the class. Shes new, theres a lot of material, but if you arent sure, just ask. Shes great!
Its clearly her first semester teaching. She can not convey the material to the students and teach it well. She gives no homework or good study material for tests so you dont know what to expect. She doesnt even try to teach, just reads off her slides. She also seems very lazy with her teaching.
She is a good teacher, but this is a hard class. To do well on exams, understand the Main Points slide of each lecture-which are listed at the end of each lecture-do weekly quizzes, weekly study questions and review I clicker questions. Also study HARD for these exams, they aren't easy. Like start 3-4 days before and you should get a fine grade.
This class was literally my hardest and with the B and above requirement made it more stressful. However, if you do all the extra credit, attend the group assignments (which you get credit for if you try even if you dont answer all), and get a good iclicker grade then you will be able to pass with a B. I did bad on the exams butdid well.
Professor Mearls is nice and understanding, and her lectures improved over time. However, her lectures were defined by her just making sure slides were read, making it hard for students who digest things slowly. She should also mic up review classes so 150 kids aren't in the dark while 1 gets an answer. Be open minded! Hopefully she improved more
Dr. Mearls is a very well spoken, knowledgable, and caring professor. Don't be fooled by the comments above. Last semester was her first semester teaching and people were very disrespectful to her in class leading to her being unable to say all of the info in class. If you study the power points and do the optional questions you will do great!
Mearls is so nice and does a good job explaining the material and relating it to real ongoing research! She gives tons of opportunity for improvement and really cares about your education.
Professor Mearls did a great job explaining material clearly and thoroughly answered student's questions. Lecture slides are not too material-heavy so taking notes should be fairly easy. The day before the exams are optional but are helpful review sessions for any last-minute questions. Exams were pretty self-explanatory, but don't overthink.
Prof. Mearls is very well spoken, despite what a lot of students say about her. Often students used the fact that it was her first year teaching to explain why they didn't understand something or got bad grades. In actuality, if you study the lecture slides, do the practice problems, or attend office hours, you should be able to do well.
You will work hard
Mearls is a great lecturer and does a good job clarifying things that may be difficult to understand. She narrows down homework readings so you only have to go over the important information and not whole chapters. The material is very difficult, so you may need to put in extra time going to review sessions and office hours if you want to get an A.
she is brilliant the woman studied Biochemistry. However I'm sure you'll know that spring semester 2020 courses are online due to Covid19. Instead of them helping us and giving us more time for exam3 professor Elizabeth Mearls decided that it was more important to be "rigorous" we are already stressed out already. be considerate next time.
Professor Mearls really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. The class is not easy, and she did not make it easier due to covid-19, however she wants us to work hard. Given these things, she is very effective at teaching the material, and explains things well. Tests are difficult but if you study a lot you will succeed.
Professor Mearls and Miller worked together during the transition to remote learning which wasn't taken well by students and made the class 10x more difficult. I loved attending lectures and there is little work to do outside of class. Watch the lectures, take notes, and do the class activities and you'll pass. Her HW's are on masteringchem.
She cares students, but not good at lecture. She wants to help students and gives a lot of extra points tho.
Take 420 with Miller instead. Mearls' exams are hypothetical, application questions which make it 10x harder (35 mc, 2 short essay on OWL). Talks fast during lecture, speeds through everything, provides vague answers to student questions. She cares but doesn't know how to communicate material effectively. Study hard. Get 100s on hw and exercises.
Mearls is AMAZING. She's the best instructor I have this semester. You'd have to try NOT to get an A in this class. 3 midterms only worth 10% of your grade and a final worth 20%. Tests on conceptual knowledge so it's not just memorization/regurgitating little details. She's also extremely accessible outside of class. Definitely take 285 with her!!
I loved mearls!! We had 2 lectures, 2 lecture wrap up questions, a worksheet (done with 3 other people), and a quiz every week. 3 midterms (non cum.) and a final (mostly new stuff but cum.). She gave the individual option of having asynchronous or synchronous group work for the worksheets every week and there are so many extra credit opportunities!
Mearls exams are hard but it is applied knowledge meaning you have to understand the material and have great critical thinking instead of memorizing facts which is what I like. She gives you a lot of opportunity for extra credit because she knows her exams are hard. There are a lot of stuff to learn in her class but the lecture are not too long.
Mearls is just a really nice person who really cares about her students, which makes the class worth the effort. It's a tough class with a lot of information, but she does a great job of making it accessible and giving plenty of resources. Lots of opportunity for boosting your grades as well!
i found that they werent a good teacher to take online, the work load could be overwhelming and their lectures and notes were hard to follow along with especially if you struggle with any type of learning disabilities.
In all honesty, shes a kind person and a good professor. I wouldve definitely done better in the class had I not given up on my work and began studying a week before exams. Dont be like me!! This class is really dependent on YOU understanding the lectures and making connections to the activities we do in class. Shes there to help!
Professor Mearls is fine. Seriously, no more and no less, just fine. There isn't a crazy amount of homework, which leads some students into thinking there isn't any work to do, but just studying every week and putting effort into the weekly quizzes makes most tests a no-brainer. Point to note, lectures are wonky and tests often don't reflect them.
Professor Mearls is fine. There is no homework, so some students fall behind due to lack of actual time spent on the material as none is technically required. That being said, an hour or two a week outside of lecture spent on the quizzes and a couple hours per test makes for a pretty easy test. Lecture material and exams are often different.
Professor Mearls is a great person and clearly has a lot of passion for her field. Lots of extra credit opportunities and plenty of free points in the form of problem sets, which aren't graded on correctness. Her exams are what bring her rating down, as they often don't reflect lecture material and got quite frustrating.
The exams don't really reflect the lectures and weekly quizzes. Not many opportunities to come in and ask questions.
Professor Mearls is unclear or confusing during lecture. Her poll questions often have more than one right answer and she asks for the "best" answer then will contradict herself on the equal level of accuracy of other answers. Her exams are equally confusing so with the already dense topics doing well requires much more work in this course.
She is a kind, good person but not a good professor. Unclear and exam is very hard.
Professor Mearls lectures make it seem like shes confused about what shes teaching about. The exams are hard and the wording of the short answer questions is terrible. She offers extra credit essays at the end of the semester. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you want to actually learn something :/
Do not take biochemistry with Mearls. Dropped the major after taking a class with her. Her exams are non-related to the lectures and it seems like you need a big brain for biochemistry other than the things she teaches you in lectures. Absolute horror. Would not recommend.
I really loved having Mearls as a professor. She was my favorite professor last semester! Mearls is very passionate and understanding. I reccomend her.
The exams were 20 mc and 2 open response but the open response was worth 40% of the grade. The topics she chose were always ones she barely talked about and/or talked about the lecture before the exam. I studied all week for an exam and still failed it. The lectures won't help you learn anything.
Her exams include a lot of stuff that was hardly discussed in class and are not often what we would expect. However, she gives a ton of extra credit opportunities! Plus I find her lectures easy to follow. Overall this class isn't bad.
Prof. Mearls is a caring lady. Best way to study for this class is to thoroughly make sure you know everything on the slides and do the practice problems. She offers a lot of extra credit throughout the semester & opportunities to provide feedback on the course. Sometimes wording on exams can be confusing, but for the most part is fine.
Be prepared to work very hard for your grade. Theres opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester. Tests are difficult, critical thinking and hypothetical questions.
Prof Mearls is very caring, approachable, and has tons of extra credit. She even makes an active effort to memorize every students name. She very much cares about her students succeeding. If you put in the work (which you WILL have to do, it is biochemistry after all), there is no excuse not to do well! Seriously though, she is great.
Professor Mearls is a great professor. I did terrible on the first exam but was still able to get an A in the class. You need to figure out which study methods work for biochem and make sure you don't fall behind. Review material and make sure you really understand it for free response questions. There are many extra credit opportunities.
Great professor who really cares about her students. Her lectures can be dense but going to SI sessions and TA office hours really made the difference in my learning of the material. She gives easy extra credit and her exams are tough, but not nearly as bad as people warned me about, you'll do fine if you understand (not memorize) the concepts :)
She is one of my absolute favorite professors on campus. She is a very caring professor who wants to see her students succeed and learn the information. Her exams are based on understanding no just memorizing so you have to make sure you know the material well. Go to her office hours and talk with her, she is a very nice person.
Took summer sesh Biochem 320, she is one of the most organized, straightforward professors I have ever had. A difficult class but she gives you the opportunity to learn w/ minimal stress over grades. Lots of xtra cred and forum posts based on participation. Her notes/slides are very organized. Never thought I'd actually like learning biochem!
Her lectures are spoken clearly and explained relatively well, but she will only say anything once. Exams are frequent and difficult, and everything covered in lecture up to the DAY OF an exam is fair game. Questions require critical thinking, and for the first exam, Bio 151 was better preparation than Mearls' own class. Go to the SI exam reviews.
she is the best!! teaches biochem so well given how hard of a class it is. takes the time to actually learn people's names and she truly cares about her students. pay attention in lecture; exams are hard but you will do well if you study and she also lets you use a notecard on the exam.
Exams and quizzes do not match up with lectures and are extremely difficult yet make up majority of your grade. She only explains things once but does not explain it well and you end up teaching yourself through the book if you want even a chance at succeeding. I switched majors because of this class. i can tell she wants to do well but fails at it
Offers extra credit, quizzes aren't timed and class activties are graded based on effort. Her lectures are good but she will only explain things once and topics that she barely goes over is fair game for the exam which count for majority of your grade. My advice is attend SI sessions and her office hours. Decent class but wouldn't take it again.
Elizabeth Mearls was a kind person and really wants the best for you. This semester she tweaked her grading system that allowed me to get a better grade than I probably deserved. I personally thought this class required a good amount of studying. There were 4 exams all weighted 15%. The other 40% was pretty much free points so don't miss out.
She is an awesome professor and cares a lot about her student's learnings. yes, it is definitely a hard class, but she makes the material very understandable and has lots of resources to help students. If you're willing to put in the work, and go through the material thoroughly, this class is doable!
very nice professor however, she will only cover materials in lecture once and it will be on the exams. exams are difficult with both a combination of multiple choice and open response. exams are 60%. there are class activities (15%) and quizzes(20%) both graded on accuracy as well. it feels as if she doesn't want us to succeed.
Great professor teaching a challenging course. Lots of resources exist to help students understand. Lectures can be quick and cover lots of information, re-watching them is critical. Class quizzes and activities can be tricky, review before completing them. Extra credit options help a lot, make sure to take them.
I did enjoy the class and her teaching, but the main issue was the exams and the quizzes. I found some questions vague and so confusing to determine the right answer (e.g. select the "best" answer). I think the structure worked against the students leading to losing so many points even when the concepts were clear. The lectures were great though!
I would not recommend this instructor. The slides she uses for teaching are poorly made and she fails at conveying relevant information in a meaningful and organized way, where concepts could have been explained easily. The exam questions are difficult and often center around aspects of concepts not taught in the course or present in the textbook.
Good professor, the slides are pretty useful. The weekly quizzes and worksheet are pretty tedious, but the slides can get you through it. The content is mostly memorization so there is not much that she can do to help you. The content is basically just bio151 but a bit more in depth.
Wow, what a doozy. When taking this class you will look in the mirror at least 50 times this semester and think: "is school really for me?" and the correct answer to that after this class is no. My god does nothing make sense. Each day we blitz through new pathways at ranging amounts of detail, yet come exams you are expected to know everything. No
Elizabeth Mearls appears to almost have a desire for her students to struggle, the tests are genuinely unlike anything I have ever seen. You're allowed a notecard of notes (Front & Back), but it rarely mattered because her tests are pretty hard. Unless you fully comprehend all of the content and have it well memorized, be prepared to struggle.
I took this class with Mearls to avoid taking it with Laura Francis, a professor I also hate. After finishing this class with Mearls I wish I went through the horror of taking it with Francis. Every day you go to class, get material thrown at you and leave questioning your major and life. Mearls prays on her student's downfall. Do not do it.
Mearls finds joy in our suffering.
285 was my most interesting class this semester! Mearls does a great job teaching and is happy to answer questions/clear up doubts. Lectures are dense and can go by quickly. Exams/class activity questions can def be pretty ambiguous or specific. Difficult but NOT impossible to get an A. Attend SI & TA review sessions, you'll only thank yourself.
This is one of the most difficult classes I've taken at UMass yet, but it is possible to do well if you put in the work and start studying more than a week before exams. Be prepared to learn a LOT of information. Mearls is a good professor but she will only go over things once, and the questions on activities and exams are very specific.
Very challenging course for sure, lectures weren't required but counted for 6% of the grade and if you didn't attend that 6% would switch to your exam grad (so exams counted for more). Lectures were way too fast and exams exceptionally difficult. TA's and SI's were helpful.
Biochem is a difficult subject but I think Dr. Mearls is a wonderful professor. She goes at a slower pace and simplifies concepts w organized slides. The material gets much harder as the semester goes on so dont procrastinate studying, all the concepts build on each other. Exams worth 60% but you get a note card. SI exam reviews helped a lot.
Nice person but average professor. She is really kind and ready to help you if you reach out. Although Professor Mearls' lectures look straightforward, her class activities and exams are super confusing. She gives a lot of extra credit tho. I barely got an A thanks to that.
Dr. Mearls is caring and her class is very organized. The slides, videos, etc. are always posted which is helpful. No formal lab reports apart from lab notebook checks and answering simple questions. There are four bigger assignments throughout the semester but overall, if you just put effort in you will be just fine!!
This class is making me consider how it feels to have a scruffy 1/2 inch diameter rope around my neck
Unless you completely understand the questions right off the bat, you're screwed. Doesn't use layman's terms at all and throws a million things at you per lecture. An extremely average teacher for the level of material she's supposed to be teaching. If your major is outside of BIOCHEM you're going to need luck to pass this class.
The TAs suck at grading. Giving low grades to so,e ppl but not others even if they worked together
Biochem is difficult no matter what, I'd recommend Mearls over Miller. She goes very in-depth and at a slow pace in order to help students understand. Attendance is required but either in person or asynchronously. Multiple extra credit chances were given w/ exam reflections and an optional paper at the end of the semester. HW was useless though.
despite what the reviews may say, it is not impossible to do well in this class. the quizzes have two attempts and all of the information can be found in the slides. when you get a question wrong, it will tell you before your next attempt and provide a brief description that hints towards the correct answer. study slides and use review material!
Mearls is such a kind and caring professor but her lectures are extremely dense and exams go into depth. You will need to study a lot and really know your stuff to do well on exams but it is not impossible. Gives 2% extra credit on all exams if you do the reflection and give you the opportunity to add to your total course grade by going to seminars
Prof Mearls is an understanding professor who always wants her students to succeed. Her lectures are clear and she always answers questions in a helpful way. Exams are a large portion of the class, but are often easier than the homework questions and practice problems, which are intended to make you APPLY the concepts covered in class.
All homeworks/quizs can be worked on together and while the exams can seem like a lot of material, she summarizes it all pretty well within the study guides. This class is only hard if memorization is difficult as the material is just bio 151 expanded out. Recommended to make friends as this class is a ton easier with friends (find a bio major)
This is coming from someone who failed the first exam and got a 100 on the 2nd one. Do all her practice problems and look over the class activities. Know the concepts and teach the material on a whiteboard or something, I promise you'll see your grade improve. Get a good group to do the class activities with. Wonderful professor.
I took her class and did NOT enjoy it at all PERIOD. She gave lots of practice problems but they rarely were helpful for exams, additionally her study guides did not help. When reaching out to her in emails, my friends and I found she was passive aggressive and not approachable. Would not recommend, fine class but bad professor.
wasn't the worst professor, but she wasn't great. Lots of exam questions were about topics we discussed once then never again. You don't know your grade during the semester, which is hard for bmb majors because you need a B- to get into any upperlevels. I ended with a 79.8 asked her to round and told me I didnt work hard enough. Girl what??
She's amazing!! Super kind and you can tell she puts a lot of effort into designing her lectures. It's by no means an easy course but she does everything she can to make it easier. Double sided index card for exams, +2 pt ec reflection after exam, and ability to get even more ec by attending different seminars. I recommend this prof for 285.
Mearls is an incredibly smart professor, but she has clearly made it a goal for students to suffer in this class. I spend a lot of time on this class, probably more than all my other classes combined (this course is very challenging). This class truly tests your academic ability, and you need to be willing to put in the work. Exams are ridiculous.
Mearls is very knowledgeable and gives clear grading guidelines. The class is very structured, and extra credit opportunities are available. The class is very densely packed with material however, and it's easy to get overwhelmed.
She's a really good professor. I am a Biology student who opted to take the biochem version of 285. I had an easier time than a lot of my classmates in the ansci version and the bio version. There are 3 exams that are worth 60% of your grade. She offers 2 points of extra credit on each one and has a really good grade replacement policy. Good class.
She's very smart, but the setup of this class is not the best. Lectures are densely packed with tons of information, and she does allow a notecard on exams, but it's rarefuly helpful. You NEED to know the content inside and out to perform well on exams. Gives extra credit, which is what saved my grade. Final was ridiculously hard, she had to curve.
The class was difficult but she was a decent professor for the content. She can be intimidating but is actually very kind and is willing to work with you and help you. Dont skip classes if you want to know whats happening, theres a lot she mentions thats not on the slides, and the exams are pretty difficult but at least she allows a notecard.
People are being very dramatic about the difficulty of this class. Mearls explains things very well and posts echo360 so you can go back and watch if confused. Exams are challenging but you will be fine if you study a lot. I learned a lot in this class.
Mearls is a great teacher. While there is a quiz and a group activity assigned on Fridays and due on Sundays, they relate to the tests, and the quizzes have two tries. She gives lots of outside help and extra optional practice sheets.
Mearls is a nice lady. She genuinely wants students to succeed and puts more effort into teaching than other professors. The exams are usually easier than the practice problems. She can sometimes be longwinded to explain simple stuff but overall was an easy A.
