She is a hard grader.
Professor Rich is one of the most supportive professors on campus!
Way to go, Dr. Rich!

shes horrible
She gives lots of help.
My writing has improved in her class.
Great person, great prof! She really cares about her students, that's rare!
she's very unclear on what she wants
Very cool. This class totally helped my writing!
Terrible Prof.
She was so helpful and knows what she is talking about.
She grades too hard
Organized, interesting. Whiners need not apply.

This class was way too hard for an Eng 111 class. She treats it as if it were a graduate class. Stay away from her if you can help it because she doesn't explain assignments well.
Practical, lots of writing, and you get lots of help.
I feel like I'm really in college! If you want a repeat of HS, don't take her class.
Very hard class, expected a LOT for a 111 course. Not clear on what was required, tough grader. Avoid if possible!
Forced me to think and write critically. The assignments were often a bit confusing. Required lots of hard work - but worth it in the long run.
never totally explainsa what she wants and makes everything so complicated. RUN!
USEFUL assignments, helpful, a good class!
This was the WORST class I've ever had. Unless you want to be bored out of your mind, do lots of busy work for no reason; she just made everything more confusing and was also a very unfair grader and not very accomodating or helpful
RUN. I had no clue what was going on in her class. She could not answer my questions in anything other than doctoral degree theses. Probably a nice person, but not a good teacher.
Good class; expect to learn.
A lot of reading! Take really good quotes over the stories and should do fine on POP quizes. Kind of hard to get an A, class only wroth 100 pts. Group work SUCKS! Have to post on blackboard weekly for 10 pts. VERY BORING class and she talks the whole time
She is very nice, but her expectations in the class are kind of rediculous. She requires you to have quotes out of the readings, but you are not allowed to use the books, you have to write down all of the quotes. Quite a boring class.
I loved her class!
Interesting class. Very helpful and nice. Make sure to do readings cause have quizzes everyday. Does offer e.c and help anytime you need.
Challenging, interesting, a good class. She breaks up the time with different things to do.
Demanding but knows her stuff!
Sometimes... she tries to make your papers into something you don't want to write about - and twists your ideas around... but she is helpful in explaining the idea's to you.
Hard but fair. Expect to learn.
Dr. Rich is an amazing lady. She is very intelligent, and will help her students succeed. Her class was tough, considering it was only worth 100 pts. ;) Good prof! I wish i could have her again!!
The reading is really tough, so make sure to do it early. If you don't have to take this class, I recomend it, but only because its not a fun class.
Worst class I've ever taken. English 111 isn't suppose to be this hard. If you love the 1950s and want to read about them everyday and memorize the miniscule details of the stories, this course is for you, if not turn around now!
Very hard readings, but the class is pretty interesting. If you keep up on the work and really try, you will do OK.
I thought she was a very intellegent woman and very nice, however she was a very tough teacher.

I thought her class was hard but worth it.
What a nice lady...This class gives you a good survey of written materials in American Literature. Quiz's every class worth 30% of grade. Tests are easy if you have read the material. Take her if you can!
Very easy class. She is very intelligent but the class was way too easy. Definitely not challenging enough.
Had Dr. Rich twice and learned a lot, and worked a lot. She is a tough teacher; she will expect quality work, but she is a great speaker and really wants the student to do well. Would recommend, and will take again.
She doesn't help you at all. She expects you as a freshman to know what your assignment entails without any explanation. Don't take her if you want to get a B or above! She made the comment in class herself that she isn't here to give us A's.
Lots of work, but she gets you ready for higher-level courses.
Great class! Take it with her if you can.
went to her for help and still received a low grade. She is very hard to work with. Would not take her again!!
She tries to help you when there are questions but she isn't ever clear on what she really wants from you. Her reading quizzes are a little hard because she asks for specifics from a 15-20 page reading. don't expect to get a good grade..she grades hard!
Dr. Lizzie!! Tries hard, isn't perfect. Other comments are pretty true. Overall, not someone to avoid. Can be a fun class. Hot in an English-teacher-ish, innocent sort of way. Probably a lot more fun than she lets on.
Good teacher, too easy. I would like to say that just because she is under 90 years old unlike most of the teachers at SVSU, she is not in the least hot. Weird whoever thought she was.
Had her for lots of classes. She's a hard grader in majors classes but always very available and helpful. Also, I think she's cute. :-)
She told our class that we had to basically had to relearn how write paper's and she would tell you to put information in our papers that was useless. Just write what she tells you to and give your opinion. She is one of the worst english teachers that I have ever had.
Very hard and definately not helpful. I would never consider taking her again. She grades harshly and expects high quality writing, from people who are just out of high school!A hint to Rich- simmer down!
She expected way too much from a freshmen. She specifically said that a high school english paper would automatically receive a C according to her because it didn't meet her standards. I have at least a 3.5 GPA,but I felt so dumb and helpless in her class. I would ask for help but it was useless.
Her class was very uninformative. I learned nothing that would be useful to me in the future. The reading selections were pointless. She's nice just not very helpful. We were told that the way we were taught to write in highschool was useless and we had to relearn how to write papers.
She really cares about helping students learn how to be critical readers and writers. Her class sticks close to the sylabys and she is a stickler when grading papers according to the grading rubric. she always is there to help, in class and email. very nice.
she was very knowledgeable in the area of american lit. Her quizes were kida tough at times, but if you do the reading you'll do ok. Big group paper due at midterm and final time...grades it kinda tough. Overall, if u listen to lecture and do the reading, you'll be ok.
She's very well spoken and knows her subject. The class is hard, and you have to do the work and think hard about the readings, but if you do, you'll be glad you took the class.
Wonderful professor. Cares about students, has interesting readings. Yeah, you need to do some work, but you can learn a lot.
Prof. Rich is a very nice lady, and is very clear how she wants the assignments done. She is very helpful is you just ask her. Peer edits on papers, which there is about 5 and some reading quizzes, but they're not that hard. I did really well on my last paper and got done with the class early
Very difficult class, but she is helpful and clear about what is expected. Recommend.
ElizaBETH is extremely inconsistent in her grading. She expects a lot from you in this course. The Tyson book is****ty, so the class may have been better if there was a different text. She does not divide up classtime in an appropriate way. Quizzes are on the petty details of a story. Group projects were useless and time-consuming. She is a hippie
Very friendly and helpful. There is a ton of reading, but it is interesting. And, she *is* a hard grader but very helpful. My reading and writing improved in this class; I'll be seeing Dr. Rich again.
Dr. Rich is a fair, but hard grader. You will enjoy her class, just be prepared to work for your grade!!
Nice, interesting, sort of a tough grader though.
Intro to lit. should not be this hard!!! I love lit. but I dropped this horrible class. Not willing to help students. The Tyson book sucks, she uses it because she worked with Tyson at one time so she thinks she some literature god. If you don't understand philosophy, or don't care to study it with lit. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
Both the worst and hardest teacher I have ever had. If you ask for help on a peper before you turn it inshe will tell you it is probably a B paper, then when she ends up grading it you will get a D. Teaches from boring books on a boring time period.
Great class. Hard readings and lots of work but well worth it.
It's an Intro to Lit class that she teaches as an Advanced one. It is honestly the worst class I have ever taken. She grades vocabulary lists like they are the ACT. Good luck and I pity you for taking this class.
She is probably the hardest grader I have ever had.She expects WAY TOO MUCH on the vocab. Asks you for your own interpretation of the word and then tells you that you are wrong! She marked me down because I didn't put the section number after ENG 201.Worked my a- off on a paper and got a C+, and I consider myself a good writer. Tyson book is boring
Worst grader ever. She grades everything like a paper. Vocabulary lists went out in 3rd grade right? Not in her class. Ask for help on papers, still get a low grade but with tons of improvement and praise. go figure. i don't know what it takes to get a good grade, but still. sheesh!
Dr. Rich is a wonderful teacher and person in general. Not an easy grader, she challenges you a lot, and as a result of that, if you are willing, you will learn a lot. I wouldn't recommend her to a non-English major. If you aren't interested, you won't enjoy it.
I think that Dr. Rich is a tough grader but she cares about her students. She will help with anything and it is up to the student to earn their grade.
I loved Dr. Rich. Very intellegent woman. She cares about her students and people in general. You will learn alot from her. Pay attention. She requires APA style, which is marvelous because it helped me so much in other classes. Dr. Rich is very willing to help. The material can be challenging, however, don't we learn the most from growth?
Unless you want to read stupid stuff you will never use, avoid at all costs.
Wonderful class! If you want to learn abour a lot of different perspectives, then you will enjoy this class. She cares about your opinions!
Nice Prof. Grading was tough if your not a writer. Class was interesting but a little one sided. Great class to take if you like some interesting conversation.
OMG! Dr. Rich is awesome. I lover her. She's super nice, difficult (so you actually learn) without being too difficult. I had her for English 201, and being that I'm an English major, I'm looking forward to taking higher up classes with her.
I had my first English class at SVSU with Dr. Rich, and I have absolutely no regrets! She's an extremely kind, caring, and helpful teacher, and she has a way of giving you a new look at the world by the end of every class. Attendance is part of her grading system, so come to every class and add to the discussion. It's fun! Highly recommended!!!!!!!
This is not an easy class, nor should it be. Dr. Rich is not an easy grader, but everything you hand in is relevant to the class. There were two papers, two exams, many quizzes (expect a quiz every class period), and weekly posts on a group topic. Dr. Rich knows what she is talking about, as a result, I learned a lot about US and British Lit.
She is willing to spend time explaining things. This class is worth the time that you put into it! (She's really nice, too.)
Wonderful prof, available for helping her students and gives quick responses when e-mailed. May look a little like Olive Oyl from Popeye but she is much more of a feminist than Olive. If you are going to be in one of her classes being a misogynist is a bad idea, she won’t grade based on theology but if you are a misogynist there will be some in c
I enjoyed this class a lot. We had to do lots of work, but it was all pretty meaningful, and it seems like she cares about helping us not just gain knowledge but also abilities. She's pretty nice.
Very nice person. If you are male, you will prob not like the reading choices. Took a short semester, and I dont think she could appreciate the density of reading assignments she was requiring. It was the only class I had and I spent every spare moment reading to keep up. Often ran over the clock.
Quite a difficult class. Only tests are mid term and final, but there is a quiz everyday over reading. You also have to post on group discussions and have 2 papers to write. Hard to stay awake at times - she lectures the whole class. She's very nice and knows her material well but it's not easy.
Dr. Rich was a great teacher. Her class was very difficult, but payed off in the end because I learned A LOT! Not many people got As in the class, but you will do okay if you read. It took me a while to understand how the class worked, but once I did, I knew what to look for. She is very helpful, and the final exam was not too hard.
Very difficult and challenging.
Some concepts aren't well explained, but ask her or e-mail and she's willing to help.
my own fault i did bad. not very interesting. Try to take someone else because she does not make you want to do the strenuous out of class assignments (and there are a lot of them!!) very demanding of your time
Very intelligent & eloquent. Tough class, but I learned so much.
NEVER TAKE HER..you would think we're at harvard or something..!!!!! WTF. settle down on your expectations RICH. DO NOT TAKE HER. she expects way too much. only take her if her class is your only one and you don't have anything else to do in your life, because you'll still end up spending all your time in her class. (ANY of her classes!!!)
Will make time to help-- lots and lots of materials, examples, tips. She's clear in her expectations, and I LOVE to read, discuss, and write, so the class was fun for me.
Hard prof, so if you're looking for a free ride you need to move along. That said, she's good at her job, cares about the students and sincerely loves the subject. I'd take her again but she's SERIOUS about that syllabus.
Dr. Rich might just be the greatest teacher ever. She expects a lot, but keeps things interesting at all times. She's brilliant, funny, and one of the nicest people I've ever met. As long as you can handle the workload, she's frickin' wonderful.
Dr. Rich is an amazing instructor! Her classes are INTENSE and very difficult, but you learn a ton. DO NOT take Dr. Rich unless you're willing to work hard and learn a lot. Sometimes her lectures are a bit unstructured, so make sure you take lots of notes. Always fun classes with Dr. Rich.
Dr. Rich is PHENOMENAL! This was my third class with her and would love to take more with her if possible. She's incredibly knowledgeable and willing to listen to every idea. Class discussion is huge, but it leads to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the texts. Reading is a must (duh, it's an English class). All in all, GREAT.
Dr. Rich is one of the most difficult but most intelligent professors I've worked with at SVSU; I've taken three classes with her so far and loved them all. Definitely not easy, but she loves what she teaches; she's very willing to work with you outside of class; and she's just plain brilliant in general. Take her if you want to learn.
Rich is hard, but honestly, this is the first COLLEGE class Ive ever had. There are a lot of slack off profs at SVSU, but Rich is not one of them. I hated most of the class, but I worked my ass off and in the end I learned a lot. I won't take her again because it is hard to get through one of her courses, but for the first time in college I learned
Dr. Rich is intelligent and well read, quite professional. The class work load is rather heavy, sometimes excessively so.She takes what she teaches seriously, and does a good job of conveying the significance of the material she teaches. The material itself is, unfortunately, the trendy, postmodern, nihilist rubbish popular in academia these days.
Dr. Rich is so very smart but its difficult to understand some of what she tries to explain. She is the best professor I have ever seen at taking a random comment or question and directing it back to class discussion. Our tastes are completely opposite which made the class a little difficult. Hard grader but I might take her again.
Dr. Rich is smart and sweet. Sheâ??s willing to help if you ask. I agree with everyone saying that the class is not a blowoff, but if you do the work, youâ??ll be fine. This class is for people who really want to be majors or minors.
Dr. Rich's class has a very heavy workload, but it is an upper level English class. Contribute often and remember the online discussions, so you hit 25 pages. Be prepared to work but enjoy the readings.
WORST ENGLISH PROF. She grades harshly and without explanation. She does not use a rubric for assignments, making it difficult to understand why she grades as she does. When I went to her office hours for help on a paper, she was not helpful. Her midterm exam included quote identifications (you must know author, text, speaker, etc). STAY AWAY
Rich is hard and you have to understand that she's not going to let you slide by. I really like her as a professor because she makes you work hard. Not an easy class, but she's worth taking for sure.
She honestly is a good professor who knows what she is talking about, but she does grade a bit harshly and the worse thing about her is she fails to communicate about assignments. She will wait a week before a paper is due (sometimes even 2 days) before the assignment is due before talking about the assignment in detail. Her quizzes are hard also
LOVED this class. She was organized, and it is a lot of reading and some hard concepts, but she gives loads of notes online and spells everything out. Not easy but worth it.
Rich is phenomenal. Without a doubt one of the best professors at the university. She will challenge you, but is fair in her assessments of your work. She loves open discussions, which makes her classes interesting and informative. Take her as often as possible before you graduate. You won't regret it.
Dr. Rich is wonderful. The class is very difficult: two long papers, weekly VSpace posts, quizzes every class period, long exams, sometimes the lectures can get boring. But you do learn a good deal and she is one of the most dedicated professors at trying to get people to a good grade if you seek out help.
Fantastic Professor. A literary giant. Intensely critical, but totally reasonable and fair. Classes are not easy, but are more rewarding than any other class I've taken in my college career. YOU ARE LUCKY TO TAKE HER CLASSES, TAKE ADVANTAGE.
Won't be taking again. She's super nice but is really unclear on how she wants assignments done (terrible rubrics) and is a very tough grader. I liked the way she explained things, but on tests, quizzes, papers, and the online project, she is extremely particular on the wording you choose. Don't buy the writer handbook, only the others.
Expects things your going to learn in class before you even learn them. completely unrealistic expectations with no understanding. She expects final week papers the first week of class.
Rich teaches of dead lit movements. To bring up context and clarification has her stumbling around material she isn't even confident about explaining. She hasn't a clear course structure, nor does she care. If you want to actually write or attain skills, skip. If you want to not create a path for yourself and remain beige, enroll.
I didn't know what to expect going into a class on Native American literature, but it turned into my favorite class of my program so far. She cares, is easy to talk to, and excited about what we read.
Dr. Rich is an extremely sweet woman. Her class was super tough, but it was very rewarding. The only negative feedback I have is that the reading assignments are completely unrealistic. She'll expect you to read half of a novel between Monday and Wednesday.
She quizzes almost every class based on the reading. Plus, she also requires you to post twice each week based on your reading. Miss a post, and major points get deducted! Read and set an alarm to post. Papers arent to bad. Exams are bad, for example, gives 150 terms to study and only tests on 25 of them. Her teaching style was not the easy
Dr. Rich is a great professor. She is very caring and wants to help students get a better grasp on the material. Her feedback on papers is incredibly insightful and she is very approachable if you have questions and need clarification on material. I highly recommend her.
Dr. Rich is really passionate about her classes, and is very caring and respectful to students. There is a a lot of material to read, and the concepts can be difficult to grasp but Dr. Rich explains things in terms to understand. There is an analytical paper and research paper. She gives a lot of guidance for those if you're not comfortable.
Dr. Rich is so great. She is very well read and informative. Also very accommodating when it comes to getting hep with assignments. Always responds to email.
A lot of reading for this class, but Dr. Rich is helpful in explaining concepts. Online group discussion posts twice a week, two analytical papers, a midterm and final that are challenging but grading is fair.
Dr. Rich is very kind and provides wonderful feedback to all her students concerning your papers. Discussion post and quiz every week. I had to rent 5 or 6 books for the class, and you will have to read them all to understand the material. There are no exams in the class because it focuses heavily on writing. High standards for student's writing!
Weekly discussion posts and quizzes, not too hard if you follow along with the reading. Concepts are simple enough. Overall a pretty easy grade.
Dr. Rich is a sweet person. That being said, her classes are extremely difficult. She said on day 1 that we wud fail all her quizzes because she makes them hard. Claims she’s trying to prepare us for grad school. All but 1 person failed her midterm. Readings are extremely challenging. I’m a 4 year straight A student struggling to keep a B.
Dr. Rich is a great professor, but the subjects that she teaches can be rather challenging. If you do the readings, though, and go to her office hours for help when you're really struggling, you will easily pass her class. Her feedback is incredibly helpful, and her rubrics are clear.
Despite being an intellectual challenge to contend with, Rich's classes are plagued by political bias. She will criticize you if your way of writing is not postmodern in structure, and there is a large focus on leftist theory. It is fine for her to hold these opinions, but to place them upon her students was a great detriment to my enjoyment.
This class is supposed to challenge students and help provide insight into Native American Literature, and Dr. Rich made these somewhat challenging concepts accessible. Her grading criteria were clear, and her lectures were helpful. The reading quizzes were difficult but manageable (they're not worth a lot, only around 10% of the final grade).
Dr. Rich is one of the hardest graders I have experienced yet, I often got c's on the theme assignments and her feedback consisted of "great use of your quotes" "add a comma here" and "does this relate to your theme?" If you want to do well in the class you must purchase all 7 textbooks and read 80+ pages for each class period!
Dr. Rich is a great person and is super kind, but multiple times does she blame her students for failing her exam. The class average wasn't passing, and instead of changing her exam she told us we were the issue. Her exams horrible. The amount of reading, worse. The quizzes are picking up on the smallest details. Essays fine, forgets to go overthem
This professor relies heavily on the fact that you are reading the material. She talks most of the time and does not have in-class group discussions. She seems like she is trying but not getting through to the students. If you are personable and do the reading she will grade you nicely, if not then she will grade you poorly.
She was sort of an easy grader but she was so lecture heavy. All she would talk about the reading assigned. There was so much reading. If you did not do the readings than you would fail the quizzes and you had to attend class or you would miss quizzes. Her explanations were never really good and she had a hard time explaining assignments
Very nice professor, super caring. There was two discussion posts due by Wednesday for me which was a little bit hard. There was a new chapter/reading every class. The lecture is basically a discussion of the chapter, the exam was pretty hard. Although there was a heavy work load she is easily one of the kindest professors I've had here.
Rich is such a sweetheart. She is always open to your views on the readings. Lots of readings and quizzes on them almost every class. Take good notes. Office hours made it helpful for me on the papers. 2 papers. A midterm and final. The midterm and final are hard. Take good notes in class, and ask her questions to clarify. She is very helpful.
Prof. Rich is super nice and caring. I did feel like I was set up to fail tho. The amount of reading that she expects you to do is unreal. She makes you take a quiz at the start that can vary from hard to easy. The midterm was Horrible. We had 24 reads with 18 authors to remember by heart for quotes and then had to write a page over class work.
I actually really liked this professor. She is super sweet and really helpful. She is always willing to help you if you just ask. There are two essays throughout the semester but you're given plenty of time to write them and ask questions if needed. There were also three books that were required, but I only used two of them. Would take again!
I was excited to learn about Native American lit. However, it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I struggled with her other class and had to drop out. I wish I could drop but I'm unable to do it being a requirement. I came out of the midterm questioning if I truly understood English as a whole. She is super nice but hard grader.
Professor Rich is the harshest grader I've had so far. She is very picky with your writing and does not give good feedback. Her readings are hard to comprehend most of the time, and she expects a lot out of you for this course. I would not recommend taking a class from her.
She assigns so much busy work throughout the week that it makes you feel like she forgets people have other classes. She is not equally understanding among all of her students. quizzes also cover the smallest most unimportant details so be sure to remember everything from every single read.
Prof. Rich is caring, though the readings are intense. Quizzes, papers and exams are challenging but fair. Unstuck AI helped me prep efficiently alongside the textbook. Overall, a rewarding class if you stay on top of the work.
Professor Rich is quite literally the worst professor I've had. Her grading criteria is never clear, her lectures are incredibly boring because she drones on about the same topics, and honestly she's just not a like able person.
I've had this professor for two classes and overall she was boring, tended to go on long tangents. I tried to take another class with her this semester to try and see if maybe I just had a bad experience. But she is genuinely difficult. Nosey as well, looking on my computer as if I'm a third grader who needs someone over my shoulder. Condescending.
its an english class, so theres def a lot of reading. i found myself enjoying this class much more than i thought. rich is SO kind to her students and is very clear with expectations. class time is spent analyzing the reading homework--rich is helpful and amusing. you write an in-class paper like every 2-3 weeks but its only 12 sentences.
Dr. Rich is a knowledgeable and overall good professor. She is very strict, no technology use during class, and do not have any side conversations. There is a lot of reading and notes for homework, but there are no essays outside of class, which is nice.
Professor Rich is a positive and upbeat individual but when it comes to reading books/poems for class, she doesn't give enough time that is reasonable. I also feel like she is a tough grader once she actually grades the work. You really have to think outside the box in this class. Other than that she is a nice person.
