Dr. Rust's class is very fast paced. She talks 100 mph but is always willing to explain in further detail upon request. Open to questions in class. The exams maintain an average of ~80% but the written homework is tough. Stay on top of the work and start studying early!
Dr. Rust is a great teacher who is always willing to further explain and answer any questions. As the previous person mentioned, she does go through the material fast and you have to know a ton of stuff for exams so don't procrastinate! Also, the 4 HW assignments are worth a lot of points and are very challenging, find a friend and do them together
Horrible class! Not because it's hard, but because Rust is so annoying. She talks fast, but is never saying anything important... just repeating herslef five times and saying mmmk. The mmmks were distracting. I found her lectures to be painful to listen to. If you have any science background (I have a lot) take 502, or be miserable and bored.
Great teacher. Answers every hand that is raised. They lessened the material covered so it is slower paced but it sill covers a lot. Don't bother buying the book you will never use it. Dr. Rust keeps the class entertained though some dull material.
nicest prof ever! very willing to help, in and out of classroom. HOWEVER, invest in a recorder, she talks 202x miles a min. Exam 1 easy, 2 and 3 are HARD as hell, thought class was easy due to just having to conc. on lecture notes (dont even bother reading book unless having difficulty w/concepts) but tests are hard really have to know the stuff
Rusty is awesome. She's really nice, funny, and willing to help. The class is hard, however. You definitely need to stay on top with the studying and need to understand the material *very well* for the exams. It was interesting, but not an easy class. If you can, have Deepti as your GSI too...she's amazing.
I am not a fan of Dr. Rust. She's too ambitious with material covered per lecture. Tests are tricky, and cover minute details of lecture slides. It's not hard if you have adequate time to prepare for her tests, but this is not an easy class. Deepti Nagarkar is amazing though, make sure you attend her discussion even if she's not your GSI.
i really like physiology but she made it horrible! speaks super fast - she's 3 slides ahead by the time i'm finished writing notes on the 1st slide. she makes test questions tricky on purpose and her exams are killer. the homework is sometimes impossible without the help of the gsi! would not recommend at all.
Moves way too fast through material. C concepts are not that easy, and she doesn't do a very good job explaining. Exams are tricky.
there are online quizzes every week, 3 (impossible) homework assignments worth just as much as exams, 3 exams, 1 cumulative final. she's willing to help students outside of class. a lot of material covered in a lecture. you have to keep up with the readings and notes in order to do well. overall, i would recommend dr. rust!!
You must know every detail of every slide for the exams and should have read the chapters thoroughly a few times. Exams are *VERY* detailed. The homework is very tricky and took about 20 hours to complete each assignment well. Do well on the weekly quizzes to buffer your grade and get 100% on the introductory course quiz. Get Deepti as your GSI
the class intense, but it was my favorite one at this university. you literally have to go home and study your slide and supplement it with the book in order to keep up with all of the material. however, once you understand it, the tests aren't that bad. it def. IS NOT a slack off class, but if you go to dr. rust, she will always help you.
Best professor at the University by far! Class was super interesting, learning the material could be difficult, but the actual tests were not that bad! HW assignments were challenging, but really helped to learn the material. Dr. Rust is awesome, I highly recommend this class!
Professor Rust is one of the best professors I have had at the university. She explains things very well and always answers any questions. She also gives little practice problems to try throughout the lectures to make sure that you are understanding the material. It's not a slacker class, but definitely doable.
One of the best teachers at the University. The class definitely requires work, but was incredibly interesting. Things are explained well, and she is helpful in trying to better explain things if you are confused.
Professor Rust is an amazing teacher! She really wants her students to do well in the class. Although the homework's tend to be extremely annoying at times, they really help with learning the material before the tests. Also, do the introductory quizzes! Really helps boost your grade come the end of the semester!
Really fast talker so you may want to record her lectures. Textbook is essential for solving homework sets. Don't try to solve with knowledge from other classes because even if it's right you'll get marked off for being too explicit. If you study your notes and know them thoroughly you should be able to get a good grade in the class
Dr. Rust is overrated. Extremely fast talker who is very bad at explaining tricky concepts and cannot explain it more than one way. She is also very condescending to her students in the e-mails she wrote. However, she does have a lot of office hours and will TRY to help. Go to class and listen to recorded lectures. An A is possible.
I think people mistake Rust's directness with condescension. I agree with her being a fast lecturer--she admits to it and asked students to ask her to slow down if she got carried away. Written assignments help a lot with boosting a grade. Exams are moderately tricky, but you have to stay on top of the material--It's easy to get behind.
This class is extremely interesting, but it is very easy to fall behind. Keep up with the notes EVERY DAY! Dr. Rust speaks very fast and doesn't always explain well. She also comes across condescending, but is pretty friendly in office hours. Lectures were recorded, but definitely go to class. The book is necessary to do the homeworks.
She is amazing!! One of my favorite professors ever. Fascinating, knowledgeable, approachable, helpful
Great class-she talks fast, but when you go back through lecture slides you realize a lot of it is repetitive. Definitely need to do the book readings for homeworks. Definitely learned a lot!
Dr. Rust was awesome, she really wants her students to learn. While the homework assignments and the quizzes could be a pain, they definitely helped keep you in check for the class. I'd recommend this course to anyone.
I picked the class largely because of positive reviews here, and boy, was I in for a surprise. The lectures are very disorganized, there is no easy space or time to jot notes down. The workload is appropriate for 5 credits, but not 4 - you constantly have assignments due, even before exams. Discussion is not helpful either. Very, very hard class.
I didn't think she talked fast, I could understand her perfectly. I really loved this class. If anything, this is the Pre-Med weeder, because it's about the human body. Not about plants/animals or molecules (mostly), but just what medicine is about. This class isn't hard either, JUST READ THE BOOK!
Dr. Rust is a fantastic professor. She really knows her stuff and makes lecture fun and interesting. It is a labor intensive course, but definitely worth it for anyone who is premed. She also records the lectures!
Truly great professor. Extremely clear, very organized, and funny on top of that. Class is really not difficult, but make sure to take good notes and GO OVER THEM, as she practically gives the answers to every question on the exams. She records and posts the lectures online, which is great, but going to lecture makes a huge difference, so go.
The class is incredibly interesting, but since Dr. Rust knows so much, it's a very difficult and demanding class. It's the most time-consuming 4 credit class i've ever taken, and while the exams and assignments are tremendously diffucult, you learn a lot.
Dr. Rust is fantastic, but expect to put in a lot of time outside of class trying to get a hold of the material. I found her to be really down-to-earth and her reviews and office hours were very helpful. She's definitely not the easiest prof, but the class is super interesting and she is very, very knowledgable about the ins and outs of human phys.
Dr. Rust is awesome! She knows her stuff and is approachable for questions. Contrary to other reviews, this class is NOT difficult at all. The only bad thing about Dr. Rust is that she just "talks" about the material during lecture rather than reading off the lecture slides, which actually made it difficult to follow her and pay attention.
Dr. Rust is a fantastic professor and would recommend this class to any pre-med. She is extremely helpful always willing to take the time to help you. This class is a lot of work, but if you put in the time, you will do well.
A lot of work and she can be intimidating but interesting and well taught
Dr. Rust is an awesome lecturer. She talks very quickly but also records her lectures and I highly recommend re-listening to them. I never used the textbook and learned the material purely off of the recordings and her powerpoints. She is very open to questions and puts a lot of effort into having lots of office hours.
Dr Rust is a decent teacher but she goes super fast through the material. Thankfully she posts lecture recordings on ctools of every lecture making it really easy to go back and re-listen. This class is very interesting, especially if you are pre-med but it is not an easy A.
Dr. Rust is probably the best professor I've had at UofM. She goes through the material quickly but if you miss something she is incredibly kind and open during office hours. Definitely take this course if you're looking for an awesome introduction to physiology.
Great professor. Never though I would love physiology so much but she was able to reinvigorate my love for science and medicine. If you listen in lecture and actually learn the material you will do great!
Dr. Rust is an amazing professor. She truly cares about her students and goes to great lengths to help you if she sees you are putting in the time. This has been my favorite class Ive taken at umich. But be ready to put in a ton of work outside of class as well as prepare for hard exams.
Dr. Rust is moody, condescending and generally unpleasant to be around. I don't understand her high rating. She will help you if you ask for it but treats students so disrespectfully it makes me sick. As I graduate student, I expected much more than the belittling and sometimes childish temper-tantrum emails I received from her. Avoid if possible.
Tests are really hard, all quiz and homework questions are very specific and you need to be able to apply all the knowledge that she teaches you. She expects you to know every aspect of everything she teaches you. Hardest class I have ever taken and will probably ever take
Come to lecture prepared to take notes. She lectures fast, so take short-hand notes and peek at slides before lecture. My favorite class at U of M. Her office hours are very helpful, she is willing to help you out in forums too. Rewatch lectures you had trouble with. Sit near the front and stay engaged. Don't fall behind, its cumulative final exam.
Physiology 201 is the best science class I've taken at U of M. It's hard, no doubt. Lectures are recorded, there are assigned homeworks and content quizzes, on top of the 4 exams + cumulative. If you're pre-med, this will reassure you you're in the right place. It's hard, but totally doable, plenty of places to get points. Rust rocks.
Dr. Rust was a great professor. She really means it when she says that everything you need to know is on her lecture slides. She was super friendly in office hours and always gave clear answers to questions. The class as a whole is great and extremely interesting if you're thinking about a healthcare profession. Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Rust was an amazing professor. I changed my career path because of this class and her. If you're not good with fast lectures, you are able to re-watch them at home later at a set pace. The homework takes some time but really helps you understand the material. At home quizzes and homework every week. 4 MC exams + 1 cumulative exam.
Prof Rust was one of the better professors I've had here. Very kind, truly cares about her students. She does cover a lot of material pretty quickly, but there are tons of resources if you do not understand the first time. No clicker so you can watch lecture at home.
Expect to put in a lot of work if you want to do well. She goes through lectures really quickly which makes it difficult for people who print the slides and add to her notes by hand. I didn't find her explanations very useful but the GSIs are good resources. Her slides are enough for the exam, dont buy the book unless you want the extra credit
There is a lot of work in this class, from the weekly quizzes, which have questions that can be harder than exam questions, to the long and sometimes arduous homework assignments. Otherwise, Professor Rust is very approachable and a very nice lady, and her teaching works quite well. Though be prepared to pay $100 for recorded lectures.
I loved Dr. Rust. She's really fun and engaging and super knowledgeable. This course makes you work for the A--written homework assignments, quizzes, exams, and optional online assignments for some extra credit. This course is loaded with information but she makes it applicable and interesting. Would recommend, especially for pre-health students.
Very challenging course. But an A is very attainable. She offers a lot of extra credit and is willing to meet with students outside of class. Grading is always fair on homework assignments. Overall, excellent class.
A pretty challenging class. If you do all of the assignments on time and make sure to study well before exams, you should be fine. Make sure to do the extra credit options. They are really helpful for a grade boost.
If you've taken biolchem415, this is dumbed down. This class is high school. Not saying it's easy. It's just tedious and requires a lot of time to finish the weekly quizzes and assignments. Don't plagiarize--not even from her slides--not even a scientific definition FROM her slides. She will catch you and drive you crazy. Do the extra credit!
Dr Rust was amazing. Best class I have ever taken at Umich! It is very challenging but an A is entirely possible. Do the extra credit and find people to study with!
She goes very quickly in her lectures and there is a lot covered. She does not try to trick you on her exams and her exams are very fair. Her homework and quizzes help you learn the material better than any other class I have taken. She is very caring, I highly recommend taking this class, and I would love to take a class of her's in the future.
Professor Rust is an amazing professor and will do everything she can to help you get the grade you want! She definitely goes fast in lecture to cover a lot of material, but it is extremely well organized and easier to understand than most professors. I highly recommend this class with this professor, especially over Animal Physiology at UM.
Dr. Rust is an amazing lecturer and presents complex material very clearly, but get ready to work extremely hard. An A is completely obtainable, but you have to spend a lot of time on every HW assignment and quiz since those points add up. Take notes in lecture and literally memorize every single lecture slide and you will be fine for exams.
Dr. Rust is an absolutely inspiration lecturer and person, who will give you absolutely ever tool needed to do well in this class, the MCAT, and professional school. She understands the occasional difficulty of the class and will guide you through any topic as much as you need. Her homeworks can be hard but they are mostly beneficial for exam prep!
Dr. Rust is a great professor. She is clear in all of her explanations and really makes an effort to care for her students, and is extremely flexible. There is A LOT of information on each exam, but as long as you study leading up to the exam you'll be fine. The tests are very straightforward compared to her quizzes, which are weighed a lot less.
By far my favorite class that I've taken so far. Dr. Rust is an excellent professor and I'd recommend this class to anyone. You definitely have to put in a lot of work for an A, but Dr. Rust holds review sessions and office hours so she is easily accessible. HIGHLY recommend this course over Bio 225.
I can't express how much I admire Dr. Rust and enjoyed her class. She was excellent from the start, but after going through all the Covid-19 changes I can easily say I've never had a more caring professor. More than once, Dr. Rust's genuine concern for the wellbeing of her students has made me tear up- she will do anything she can to help you.
Dr. Rust really cares about her students and that they achieve. The exams are hard, but she gives you opportunities to improve via homework and quizzes and also offers a lot of extra credit (do it ALL). An amazing lecturer and very kind. Go to her office hours, they're helpful and she loves to get to know her students
Dr. Rust is a great professor. Her class workload is pretty heavy, with quizzes, homework, and discussions every week. Bu, this really deepens your understanding of the material, and I never really had to extensively study for the exam.
She may be a decent professor but she treated students very rudely. Being a professor does not give you an excuse to be an awful person, and she did not treat her students kindly or respectfully. People like Dr. Rust do not inspire me to follow in their footsteps.
Dr. Rust is one of the best professors I've had at Michigan. She is so empathetic and respectful of her students, and you can tell that she wants all of us to succeed.
very flexible without being a push-over also very fair on grading. The class is heavy and it is pretty hard to keep up with but if you take the time and really go over everything you should be ok. Overall I'd say she one of the better professors I have had here (which isn't saying much) and I would take another class with her again.
The workload for this class is ridiculous. It is over 7 hours of lectures per week plus content quizzes, homework assignments and difficult exams. Dr. Rust is very cold and unapproachable.
PHYSIOL 201 is a hard class and sometimes the concepts are very difficult to understand. Dr. Rust tried her best to explain but sometimes, in my opinion, she does not treat it like the intro class it is. The exams and homeworks are difficult so definitely find people to work/study with. She was very nice and often held office hours to help.
Ok the amount of work this class has is insane. The quizzes and exam are very very difficult, honestly if you want to take a physiol class take the bio225 it wayy better. Also, the way she grades the homework!!!!! like you can get 2 or 3 points off just for missing ONE word. So i would NOT recommend taking this class, NEVER
Dr. Rust is an incredible lecturer. This class is very difficult, but if you put the work in you will succeed. Office hours are held so students can work out problems together which is incredibly helpful. Lectures are very informative and interesting. I definitely recommend this class to anyone interested in medicine.
This class is very interesting but it's content-heavy. Homework is graded pretty harshly, but 1 gets dropped at the end of the semester which is nice. I love that she has office hours before assignments are due bc it helps to clarify topics. Amazing professor and is kind, but get ready for the amount of material you need to learn.
Excellent at teaching, physiol 201 is one of my favorite classes. Dr. Rust is a great teacher and cares a lot about her students
Best class in undergrad at UofM for pre-health students in my opinion. Dr. Rust is very good at teaching the material and making it interesting. Be ready to spend a lot of time in this course as material is heavy for sure.
Definitely recommend taking this class. Dr. Rust is very caring for her students and will explain things if confused, as well as has a bunch of office hours on zoom. Also offers extra credit. Made class interesting!!
Dr. Rust is very knowledgeable in the topic, but oh my, the amount of content covered in a short amount of time is insane!! She offers a whopping 1% EC and drops one quiz and two group assignments (Graded on completion). I found it hard to keep up with the amount of difficult content at times.
Dr. Rust made learning physiology engaging and was very approachable for questions in and outside of class. She offered optional office hours and help sessions at least once per week.
Dr Rust was overall a fantastic teacher for a tough course. The flipped classroom format was also well executed and allowed me to learn at my own pace. The in person exams weren't too difficult, but the homework assignments were tedious at times. But overall, if you keep up with the lectures and do homework on time without cramming, you can succeed
Dr. Rust is an excellent professor. She genuinely cares about her students and typically has office hours multiple times a week. This is a flipped course, which works well with how much covered hearing certain things explained twice. Go to lectures and office hours they are incredibly helpful! Dr. Rust is always willing to answer questions.
Its worth noting that Rust was removed from their previous role as director of MIP's MS degree program due to a lack of collaboration and poor relationships. She was reportedly difficult to work with, dictating how the program should be run and intimidating colleagues. Her behavior also showed challenges in fostering a positive classroom experience
This has easily been one of the hardest and most disheartening classes I have ever taken at UMich. Rust's slides are filled with a thousand words and I find it really difficult to tell what she actually wants you to know. She has been condescending when I've asked questions and so many students have basically given up on this class because of her.
This course is very dense but Dr. Rust seems to really care about her students and the flipped classroom model works well for a course like this.
I'm not sure why people like this professor. She does not prepare students for exam. This is the worst class I've ever taken at UMich
Dr. Rust is one of the worst professors I've had here. She teaches the class as if we are graduate students with a physiology degree already. Each exam has around 800 slides, but just wait: theres also a cumulative final. The averages on all of the exams this semester have been D's and F's so clearly her teaching is not working.
This is the worst class I have ever taken at this university. The workload for this class is genuinely insane. Hours of lecture videos a week in ADDITION to the hour-and-a-half lecture three times a week. Horrible tests, which are made as if we are already doctors. Not to mention a CUMULATIVE final. Don't take no matter what you do.
I'm a senior and have physiology courses and learned this material multiple times but it doesn't matter because the exams don't even test whether or not you know the information (500-800 slides). She makes the exams insanely difficult and nothing like lecture problems and it feels like she's trying to trick you. least favorite professor ever.
I like Rust as a person, but her class is ridiculous for an intro course. Pre-lecture videos are very long; class is 90 minutes, three times a week. Exams are hard, short answers are graded harshly, concepts are overcomplicated, and extra credit barely helps. Would not recommend.
She is the most condescending and arrogant professor. It is well known that the chair of physiology years ago reassigned her as lecturer for this course due to ongoing issues in the master's program—students and faculty alike found her leadership and teaching style to be overly rigid, intimidating, and punitive. BEWARE of her attitude and demeanor
Dr. Rust is the best! She really cares about her students. She offers help sessions every week that I highly recommend you go to! They are very helpful and definitely helped me get a good grade in the class. Her exams are tough (but fair) but that's only because the material itself is tough. Highly recommend
Short Assessments: You will lose points even if the answers are accurate because you missed useless minor details of the instructions, such as skipping a new line. Completely unreasonable grading system, the course is predatory. Insane amount of content covered for an introductory course, and there are only around 25 points to spare in total.
Good luck!
I crossed the crosswalk every day on green hoping a car would end it before this class. She's knowledgeable, but condescending. Lose a point? Grade is now a C-.And earning points is basically impossible unless you name every microscopic detail (I never mastered every detail, hence my grade). If you have to take this class for your major… Godspeed.
Lectures are insane. there sometimes one hour of recording but are filled with notes so it takes you triple the time. Class is difficult for an introduction class and if you get behind good luck with catching up.
The amount of content in this class was insane. It was formatted as a flipped classroom so you had to basically learn all the information on your own and go to lecture and discussion on top of that. Some days there could be up to 6 videos for ONE lecture that would take hours since there were a million words on each slide. Exams were very difficult
A hard class with hours worth of material to review before lecture. Rust says you dont need to watch the videos but should as most content would be covered in lecture but that is not true. Maybe doable if you spend all your time working on this class. like. all. your. time. SA are hard, exams are harder, quizzes are ok. Exams are so hard. sosohard.
