UMMM CONFUSSING...VERY TO BE EXACT. MOSTLY PAPERS/HOMEWORK...BUT SHE'S A HARD GRADER.
i did not like the class at all. i took an online course for it thinking it would be partly easy but NOOOO!! i took it again with schulte and got an A.. So i know it's not the class that's hard it's her! confusing..
Extremely confusing. What's obvious to her would take an average student 27 years to discover. Too many assignments, BORING is an understatement.
very difficult to understand. Sometimes gets frustrated when students ask questions and never gives a clear anser.
Well I enjoyed the book and learninf Philosophy but for gods sake I felt like I was taking a advance Philosophy class. Her tests are close to impossible to ace. I did all my work and I still had trouble answering her all essay exams. She's very nice thoug
Tough. Need to do all assigned reading, lecture notes, do study guide, most of exam is off of online study guide. 3 exams, 5 dialogues, 2 papers, 2 quizes.
the subject itself is a very difficult one so make sure that you do not fall behind on any of the readings, her lectures are somewhat pointless for the fact that she does not review the material, they are moreso dedicated for class debate.
Very unclear about her expectations, She grades unrealistically hard, as if this were a graduate level course rather than introductory level class. If you take her expect to do alot of reading, and go beyond the call of duty!
Shadish is too hard on her students. I busted my butt in her class and I deserved an A, she gave me a B. She is very impatient and sometimes will snap on the class. She belongs in a crazy house.
She is too harsh on grading, she gave me a D in this class and i didnt miss an asignment, actually tried more in this class then classes ive gotten an A in, dont take her if possible.
She seems to be a bit air-headish. She's unclear when she lectures and when you ask her to explain better, she repeats the same thing. She seems to think that we can hear what she's thinking. Very difficut to understand. Loved the debates, but hate the class and teacher overall.
Assigns a lot of reading. Easy class as long as you get it but if you dont you are screwed. Her lectures are very unclear but she does try and help but its not useful. Try to avoid her class
Guys do not take this class. She will make your GPA go down. It is not worth it. I think everyone should get the idea, that this teacher is here to not help you transfer to the college you want to go to. I suggest Schulte for Philo 2.
Man!! I don't know where to start. I took this Professor's online course, thinking since it was an introduction to the subject that it wouldn't be to complicated. Man she's probably the toughest grader I've ever had. If you transferring soon, DO NOT TAKE PROF. SHADISH!!
she is a TERRIBLE PROFESSOR! dont take either of the online classes. they are near impossible to get an A in. if you are going to transfer soon, avoid her class.
Ugh...I don't know where to start. She's a nice *person*, but...I don't think she's very good at teaching this. The concepts are extremely hard to understand, the book doesn't help much either, and sometimes her directions are a bit astray. A very hard class to get an A, I recommend taking someone else.
It's a hard topic, but she handles it very well. I'd like to take her for other phil classes! plus she puts all of her notes online making it easy to review for tests!
VERY HARD TEACHER! Screw the Ph.D. MAKES STUDENTS DO PLENTY OF READING! She makes students read a lot and make them unable to get the time to be with their friends and have spare time! ASSIGNS WAY TOO MUCH READING! EVEN MAKES YOU READ MATERIALS POSTED ONLINE! Has a Phillipino accent when she speaks! Very hard to understand her lectures. AVOID!
This teacher is a horrible! When asking for a clearer explanation on the information presented she just restates herself. Her uncreative method of teaching can make the brightest pupil want to drop out of school and never return. If you ever come across this teacher I recommend you RUN the other way. I strongly urge you to have a paper bag as y
one word...boring
Thanks a lot! Makes the class way too hard! Assigns too much reading! Assigns way too much homework, but only counts against you and not for you! Even marks grades to Negative scores! BAD PROFESSOR! Avoid!
I just started taking her class. She's ok, but sometimes she tends to forget things. I hope I can handle her class well and to give her good feedback. I will leave positive feedback as soon as I can handle this class well.
Ummm, whatever.
She's getting much better now. She is getting to the point of which she is able to explain thing smuch better than she did in the 60s. I feel good about this and I leave a Positive Feedback this time. Don't have to leave negative feedback for this professor, she's not as hard as you think.
bad bad bad bad bad. thats all i gotta say
Wow. Are we talking about the same Shadish? I had a great time in her class. She IS very hard -- don't expect a cakewalk -- but I found her style very rewarding. An A _is_ possible. Have your coffee before you come in to class, and PARTICIPATE! This course made me love logic.
(+): This is an extremely hard topic, but she handles it very well. Her lectures are extremely clear and easy to understand. No accent at all! (-): The exams in this class sucks because there are never multiple choice questions on the exams in this class and they are completely essay writing out questions.
This was an Ok class. I did my best. I didn't get a really good grade, but I passed. The class was pretty fun, but the tests sucks. I unluckily got in one of the semesters when the exams were completely essay questions. Never Multiple choices. I would have done better if I got multiple choices for exams in this class.
Dr. Elizabeth Shadish is the BOMB! She handles the class really well and brings plenty of fun to our class!
This teacher is a great teacher when you can get past the ambiguity in her speech. Sometime she gets cluttered and a little hard to understand but if you keep up with the reading and actually think about the topics at hand you will do fine. I read about 4 of the required pieces (mistake, should have read them all), but I still got a B in the course
This class was a really hard class, especially with this one. The hard part was that her exams were completely essays.
Well, In this class, the exams are all essays. She switches around the exam formats and such. Sometimes, this happens to be that she gives only essays exams for only one class, but the rest multiple choice. It's a little wrong of how she does things. I don't recommend this teacher.
Fair grader. Definitely had a lot of creative debates. Read what is assigned!
This class is challenging but not impossible. Attending class is important. I was really confused a lot but I passed with a B. Turn in all your homework and use the study guides she puts on her website and memorize them and you'll be fine and go to her office hours just to say hi! It is an interesting class though and she is willing to help.
Difficult Teacher/Class. Took this online. Grade based mainly on four 60-point tests, class average on each test was 25-30. Lots of reading - tests are based on readings so you have to read! Not impossible to pass, but don't mess up!
She is very subjective in her grading. Too much reading, not enough clarity in her lecture notes for the online class to be able to give her the answers she wants on the tests. Avoid this professor if you want to actually pass a class.
She gave me a C when the scores in the gradebook (online class) added up to a B! Perfect example of her lack of attention to detail.
More then 3/4 of my class dropped. Every question on the test seems like there could be several answers. Half the time we spent fighting about the right one and got nothing done.
dr. shadish was one of the best professors i had in my life!! she is so smart and knows how to teach the material. she will answer any questions you have and is willing to help you. the class was not hard at all. simply study the review sheets she gives you and do all your homework and you will do well!!
textbook was ridiculous. difficult to read and no explanantion - just a compilation of essays. reading was pointless notes were vague and tests were specific. (online class) difficult to get into contact with.
Most ridiculous course in my college career.
Do not take this professor. Hardest class ever. Not fun.
I am a smart student, however she almost ruined my record. I took her online philosophy of religion course and had to drop it at risk of lowering my GPA. Her quizzes were impossible, and her notes didn't correlate well. I had to go into her office after every assignment to discuss what she wanted from me and she didn't even know!
This was the only teacher I did not look up on Ratemyprofessors, and boy was that a mistake! This is the only online class that I have ever had a problem! Shadish is quick at responding but extremely slow grader which makes it very difficult to assess yourself. Save yourself the trouble. Cool subject and reading but save yourself the trouble.
She is so great. She is very open and interesting.
If philosophy is not your thing then DO NOT take this class. I completed all assignments on time and participated and thought that I was doing fairly well but in the end, I barely passed with a C. The reading material is incomprehensible and the assignments are based on opinion. I don't recommend this class at all!
Excellent class but you must be prepapred to read and reread and ready to debate the assigned topics. She is very helpful and went the extra mile to help us with additional handouts and answered all questions but you cannot waste time, yours or hers, but it is so worth it. On line class is a bit isolating so stay in touch!
I got a B, my friend a C.. I did what i was told (as in the debate, any hw assigned) I didn't participate in class (did not raise my hand to ask/answer questions) all I did on the tests was "answer like a philosopher" as she said, and i managed to get a B by not studying and answering questions like a philosopher...idk its up to u to see if shes ok
Web-site & syllabus unorganized & scattered, large part of confusion. She encouraged questions re: material but refuted complaints. Blamed students more than truly taking self assess. When over 1/2 the students drop on-line course, & other 1/2 barely pass, then problem may not b students. Testing 2 ambiguous & 2 much reading 4 difficult questions.
This class is very easy to pass in my opinion. All you have to do is read the required sections of the book and you basically will pass the class. 4 hw, 3 essay test, 5 mcq(mutliple choice) test
Required class, I had no interest in this at ALL. In walks the eccentric Prof... a few months later and I have changed my major. It is pretty much your fault if you do not pass. She stayed after on most days answering questions and made SEVERAL office appointments with me to discuss anything I was unclear on, a behavior not always shared.
Professor Shadish, is a delightful professor. philosophy can be difficult, however Shadish is always available to assist. The course takes a lot of critical thinking, as well as a desire to view things from a different perceptive. I recommend her course to any individual who would like to taught abstract views!
Professor Shadish is an awesome holistic, professor. She always assist when needed. She analyzes the work and advises you where you can improve! This course will assist individuals with abstract views, and critical thinking.
This course is a lot of fun! Most of the assignments allow you to express your own ideas on the topic, making the course a lot more personal. The test, as long as you study the assignments and ask questions you can not fail this course unless you really try.
This course is enlightening! Regardless of your views of religion this course gives you the ability to make an empirical decision about the cause. I would recommend this course for any individual with an inquisitive mind, who loves to read and analyze; being that the course requires all three.
This course is very insightful, the professor is very alert, and concerns herself with her students achievements. She will assist students wherever she sees it fit. The course consists of assignments that focus on your understanding of the material and your own personal analysis and thoughts on the topic. Easy if you study!
This course is great! With it you have the ability to learn skills that you can utilize cross-culturally. Religious or non-religious beliefs are very important to most individuals, and this course helps you understand them and see the beauty in their diversity vs lumping them together for what may seem similar.
Really worth taking this course. If you are considering a Philosophy course, this is the professor you need! She is extremely helpful, and informative, and cares about the success of all her students.
A great course, I am really glad I had taken it. The only recommendation is to take the course during the Spring or Fall. I took the course during the Summer online, and I really wish I would have waited, because it is so much fun, and ended too soon!
Professor Shadish is a fair, and informative professor. The test are easy as long as you study, the assignments are a breeze. You can do well in her course by simply studying her notes, and asking questions! The test consist of multiple choice and essay questions, I would have to say the essay questions where actually my favorite part of the test!
This course is worth the time, it is extremely informative, and the professor is always open to hear your ideas! A professor who cares, you don't have to search her out to ask what or why you did not do well on an assignment, because she ALWAYS provides feedback!
Very informative, great course for writers, thinkers, and those who love to read. The inquiring, analyzing mind! Take the course if you really want to understand Religion! This professor makes everything so much fun!
An excellent Professor, a great topic!
Enlightning! A touchy subject revealed with care, by a wonderful professor!
Loved it!
A great course, with a delightful, knowledgeable professor. She knows her material, and cares for her students!
A great class!
Test are easy if you read the book, and ask questions if needed. Assignments are a breeze, they allow you to express what you have learned with your own thoughts included!

Fun class, enjoyed every minute of it! Defiantly not boring!
Great class for those who like to express themselfs in their work! A wonderful professor!
Easy course if you study, there are a couple of reflection papers, Q and A. She gave us two exams, one at midterm, and then final. Really simple if you study, and are able to view thing or wish to learn new perspectives.
A great course!
The course requires individuals to analyze a variety of philosopher views on the topic Religion. With an open mind and acceptance of individual beliefs the course is a breeze, if you do not desire to learn and respect the perplexity of different views it can be difficult. Other wise very easy for the rest.
This course is great, and welcomes individuals from all beliefs. Professor Shadish is kind, and helpful!
Dr. Shadish is a holistic professor, and covers as many aspects of religion that time allots. Friendly, approachable, and deeply desires success for all her students. This course requires the student to learn, you have to read the book, study and ask questions!
Only thing bad about this course is that it is offered in the Summer, so it ends way too soon :(
So glad I took this complex subject with such an informative, kind professor.
Best professor, for a Philosophy course. Far from bias, she is fair. Gives great feedback.
Very informative course, very kind professor. Two test, one at mid-term, and then final, which consist of multiple choice questions, and essay questions. Two reflection papers, which are great for receiving feed back.
Text book extremely important for this course, you will need it to analyze the philosophy of many different philosophers. The professor is clear, and fair, if taking a philosophy course take it with Shadish!
Dr. Shadish is extremely knowledgeable on the topic! She is helpful, and resourceful. Study, ask question, even if it is to verify what you believe something to be. Requires an analysis of many topics in religion, very holistic.
Course requires an open mind to different religious philosophy's. Dr. Shadish is a delightful professor that makes the course fun, if you have an inquisitive mind, and enjoy deep analysis this is the course for you!
A wonderful professor!
Dr. Shadish, is wonderful, and extremely knowledgeable.
An Excellent Professor!
A great professor, cares about her students! She is friendly, and knowledgeable. She is a true inspiration!
This professor is clear, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. She wants all her students to succeed, she is willing to work with her students. The course requires critical thinking.
She is a wonderful professor! I wish the course lasted longer.
A bit difficult at first, but Dr. Shadish unfolds the course very nicely and explains everything clear enough to straighten out all those difficulties.
Worst Professor! Never showed up to class considering it was online, makes you feel dumb! If you want a teacher that cares take someone else....useless teacher
Regarding the online class: syllabus was incomprehensible (dates never matched assignments from site), links completely disorganized, prof's last sign in was Feb 17. Prof just posted SOME grades from early in semester so we had no idea how we were doing. Prof is never signed in and does not update site. Prof does not answer ?s timely or at all. :0(
- HORRIBLE !! She never returned nor graded my reading summaries that were sent via email, but I have a grade stated on my ecc . Very unclear and I wouldnt recommend her at ALL .
She is such a great person who is very very passionate about teaching students philosophy. I really love being in her class even if it is too early for me. However, I think her age is catching up to her. She is fairly forgetful and that is why a majority of her class got B's instead of A's. Absent a lot, but I know she would rather be teaching. :)
She isn't a difficult or bad teacher persay, but she screws over a lot of people's grades. I should have had an A and was banking on that, but instead she took out some extra credit she spent the whole semester guaranteeing us on. I think there's a better philosophy teacher to take.
Dr. Shadish is a thought-provoking thinker and a engaging lecturer. I took her courses back in the early 90's. Her courses Intro to Philos & Philosophy of Religion spurred my interest to pursue philosophy as an undergraduate at UCSC. I found her comments and suggestions both in class and on my papers to be insightful and helpful. She is inspiring!
I took this class online & I have to say, this was the WORST experience I have had thus far with any professor. My class is almost over & I STILL haven't received a grade for my first test! My grade has changed so many times, it's laughable. Her time management skills are an absolute travesty! I do not understand why she cannot just do her job!!!
Phil. 2- Dr. Shadish is an absolute professional. She doesn't let biases get in the way of teaching the subject, which makes time in class pleasant. She knows and loves the subject and it shows in her enthusiastic presentation of the material. The reading text by Phil Washburn is great. She gives 5 quizzes and 3 essay tests. Reading is necessary.
Existentialism is a difficult philosophy to understand, but if anyone can bring clarity to movement called Existentialism, it's Dr. Shadish. She is an easy going professor who is passionate about philosophy. She does not bring any biases that she may have into the classroom. I recommend taking her for Phil. 2 and 8 before taking Phil 12.
I loved taking Shadish! I took her for Philosophy 5 which is an introduction to the class. She uses power points and grades off the point system. I was afraid that I would fail but all the points added up. I was three points from a B so she gave it to me. Shadish is very understanding and easy to talk to. I highly recommended her class.
I have to say she isn't a bad professor at all! She knows her stuff but I have to agree about yeah she's a little forgetful about some things but she's easy because she doesn't follow the grading scale to grade students harshly but she grades fair so the students that try can pass! And study for her exams if you don't study it will be hard!
Honestly she's a great professor and introduces intellectual humor in her lessons, she may miss a few classes but as adults you're required to be accountable for being prepared. She knows the information and will help you understand it as well, she'll answer any questions you have, but most importantly if you assert yourself you'll pass
She is a very nice lady. The class is not the easiest. You have to think. The book is a must. The quizzes are easy if you read the book. The essay Test are fairly easy if you study. If you are a person who does not study DO NOT TAKE HER. THERE ARE NO PROJECTS. I did enjoy taking her because she is very helpful. She was also absent a lot though.
Shadish is the WORST online instructor. She still has not graded my 1st 2 discussions. She asked me to tell her where when i posted. She never signs on she DOES NOT follow instructions - the Dean had talked to her several times. Lets just say - our class complained so much that she WILL NOT be an online instructor again.
She gives quizzes for every 3-4 chapters in the textbook and they are written in her words- which is sometimes really confusing. If you read the text thoroughly, you should understand what she talks about. Her 3 tests are short essay questions, but they are simply regurgitating the lesson topicsdetails. Keep track of all papers you get back!
The prof was unclear and isn't organized. If you want to pass, you have to read the textbook. The notes from the lectures are useless. The quizzes are confusing because the questions on them aren't from the notes. The tests are essays so they aren't hard if you read the book. To pass quizzes you need to read. I don't recommend taking her class.
Dr. Shadish teaches philosophy as objectively as one can be, which may be interpreted as "not caring" by the untrained eye. However, this style of teaching is essential for helping you understand your own core philosophical beliefs. Read the material before lecture, participate in discussions at least twice a week and visit office hours to do well.
I will warn you that my rating might be a little skewed because she had family business to deal with that affected her teaching. But I will say that you absolutely have to read the book to get an A. I wished she was more organized and practically all the students were confused since we didn't really follow the syllabus. It could have gone better.
Don't recommend. Lectures are pointless, just buy the book. Will have you working on study guides for hours only to be angry when you look at the test.
She is protected by tenior and is lazy. Still have not received syllabus and we are in week six. The test is nothing that we prepare for in class partly because she does not make the test until five minutes before class. She is super lazy and it almost seems as if she is stoned at work.
This professor had family issues, which I understand, but I needed to pass this class and it was difficult to when the grading was unclear and assignments/tests weren't getting recorded. I tried to go and clarify with her but she was always in a hurry and never clearly answered questions. Overall, she was an okay professor but very unorganized.
