Great teacher! Easy to please, fair marker, good sense of humor.
really fair marker, interested in students' progress.A great prof
Gross Marker
Good prof. Interesting topics discussed and lots of group discussion
It's her way or no way, loves the smart ones

fair marker.Taught good material. Really like her teaching methods

An alright prof with an attitude of a feminist. Fair marker.
her way or no way, very scary especially for first year students!
Very fair marker, good teaching techniques, shows concern for students progress.
tough marker, i thought; great book choice; good intentions, good r
suck up and you'll get extra marks.. good prof
nice person
Very fair marker. make yourself known to her b/c she has favs. Helpful.

Great...
contribute to class and you'll earn the marks...seriously. picks good material.
Wicked Teacher
She seems nice enough, but she's distant. You have to be persistant to get her to pay attention to you if you want help.
when she shows up you do nothing but Group work, which is occaisonally nice but it gets tiring and uneffective and the material SUCKS, if you stay awake through them... It's not an easy thing to do. if she doesn't like you're essay she'll rewrite it!
Do not take this class from her
Alot of group work, which is good. Kinda boring but her work requirements are to the point and easy. She is not hard to get along with and most of the time she changes due date if her students ask her to.
she was a good prof....nothing to difficult about the work...lots of group work which I liked....She won't spoon feed u though!she was helpful, knew her stuff but she comes across a little strange....once u get past that she is great!
Picks favorites and sticks with them. If you happen to disagree with a class favorite then prepare yourself for a C. Kind of odd as a person. Not easy to approach.
sweet and cute
Alot of group work. just about everyday, you talk about stories you read. pretty easy class to get through, no clas discussion or anything, alot of "social" time. not a real bad marker, average i guess.
I did not like any of the books for her course. But she allowed us to rewrite an assignment, which was more than decent of her.
She's a little strange that one... She's a great gal, easy to talk to... and she always lets you know what's coming up on the test... it's just... well... she's a bit of a nutter when it comes to marking papers...
not a bad prof, bit of a difficult marker, nice woman. Look out if she doesn't like you!
She is very unique, her choice of books were different but ended up being really good. I enjoyed her class. She gave us opportunity to do groupwork which was more lively than a lecture and we got to share our ideas with the class. Excellent professor.
she was an awsome prof and was extremely helpful if you need it. dont be afraid to approach her (looks can be deceiving). she loves her work, try to participate in class! one of the best eng profs!
i find her extremely boring and small minded. if you do not share her opinion on something, she marks you worng, even if you back it up.
RUN! RUN! RUN! she is the hardest marker ever, and i don't think she should be allowed to teach, it takes her 50 minutes to say absolutely nothing.
what a concept. Let's make first year students read the crappiest books ever so they lose all interest in english. Read the crappy books and do whatever work is assigned but don't go to that class.
ok prof, but a lil scary looking.

Sort of a tough marker, but I must applaud her for giving me a second chance on more than one occasion due to some foolish mistakes on my part. A lot of people seem to dislike her, but she gets my seal of approval.
For the most part I liked the books but her discussions of them jumped all over the place. She marks hard but tried to be helpful when approached.
Horrible. Says nothing in class. Very obviously picks favorites. Only those people are allowed to have an opinion. Very hard marker. Condescending. Run far away if you can.

Nice Woman. Just a little boring. Pay attention in class and you'll be fine!
BOO! shes a reallllly hard marker! i would never ever pick her! Almost failed but she did pass me! boringg
shes a nice woman, she is a very hard marker...VERY hard marker. i barley passed my first test and failed my second one...when i went to talk to her she was very helpful, she made all effort to help me out., she is a pretty good prof overall. a big crazy though.
Most bitter, horrible english teacher ive ever had in my entire life. i had the highest mark in my english 1080 class and went down to around a 70 in hers. She has a very particular taste in writing and if you dont share her ideas then you're out of luck.
This prof is the worst prof that I have ever had in my entire life. She is not clear on anything she says and never answers any questions. If a student is wrong she does not correct them she just goes on to the next student smiling. I would never suggust to chose her as a prof.
A hard marker, but makes the classes interesting. Does interesting stories and poems. Easy to follow

Dr. Somerton is great. I enjoyed the class discussions and she was very clear about the final exam. She made the semester interesting.
Great Prof, tells students exactly what she expects, she is abit of a tough marker, but great overall.
while she is a difficult marker, i think she's fair. she lets you know exactly what she wants when it comes to assignments. be prepared to take part in class discussion and read aloud - she loves that stuff. my advice: go to class and you'll be fine.
She is definetly a hard marker. Although she may be clear about what she wants in her 1st year course, she is VERY unclear in this Shakespeare course. I am terribly upset with her marking system. Just because you don't have photographic memory doesn't mean you never done any work!!
She's very dry and dull, and not very encouraging.
Never have her and never do this course. She is one horrible prof. She addressed all of her questions to one guy at the front of the class and she is a hard marker, I will not major in english anymore because she made me despise it. Worst prof EVER
one word seems to sum her up: HORRIBLE. she is a terrible marker, I was an A student and am now failing this class. I asked her for help because I did not know why I was doing so bad, and she pretty much told me I was dumb or lying about being an A student. I am currently in the process of changing majors because I now hate english. Avoid her.
boreing...........
I thought she was great compared to what i heard about my other friend's english profs. She isnt to hard of a marker and being her favorite isnt hard to do.. Just read aloud whenever she asks if anyone would like to. She is extremly clear in what she expects and goes over exactly what you should talk about in your essays.
Horrible teacher; very boring. She is a hard marker and is very dull when she is reading aloud. It is very hard to stay awake in her class, just aviod her altogether
Dr. Somerton was a hard marker, boring and very unprepared for her classes. She actually came in without an outline for us to write an essay! She isn't clear in her expectations, and when reading she jumps from page to page and its hard to keep up. She's a nice person when you talk to her, but i wouldn't recommend her as a prof.
Really dull class. She spent more time on certain material than other material - there wasn't a fair balance. Did not talk about essay questions/test content in class well in advance, so you never knew what was going to be evaluated until the class before the exam. Is helpful if you go see her though.
The material covered was pretty interesting but was presented in lectures in a very boring manner. Classes were very unorganized.
Its hard to rate a teacher who rarely came to classes. She was extremely boring, picked the strangest books, and gave very broad topics for essays. ex: Write an essay on Michael Crummey's Flesh and Blood. (this was for an in-class)
Very boring. Not clear in what she wants you to write on. Hardly ever prepared. Avoid her at all costs.
She, and those like her, are why I'm not an english major... or even like english. Looks like Ms. Chokeondick from south park. very boring and dry... bring your iPod! if she shows up for class
i found her to be quite dry, confusing, and I also found that she was unable to come down to the students level of thought.
The best way to describe this prof is.. I would say, ditzy. She doesn't have any form of structured teaching agenda and seems to loose sight of the 'teaching' part of class. other than that she's alright and the course itself is pretty easy and she seemed to be a relatively easy marker.
wow. this prof was more interested in when she could get her next smoke the the class. horrible horrible prof. i hated her.. did not explain how to do essays.. never followed due dates.. didnt value your opinion.. if it wasnt what she was thinking it was wrong. horrible teacher. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I am part of the 10% of students that really liked her. She is clear in what she wants students do. She is really friendly if you go to her office, and she really likes most of the material. People complain cause she's too "weird", I think she's effin hilarious.
I strongly disagree with the negative comments below. I really enjoyed Dr. Somerton's class. She made people think about poetry for themselves by encouraging class discussion and asking questions -- unlike many English professors at MUN who simply lecture. She's very easy-going about deadlines, and, overall, a very nice lady.
I also have to disagree with any of the negative comments. This teacher kicked ass. She was helpful and easy going. Her approach to teaching may be a bit different, but that's one of the reasons she was so great. She tries to get the class to participate (but she's not pushy) and doesn't just lecture AT You. I strongly recommend taking her class!!
She was a decent English prof I guess, the major thing about her that bothered me was that she would make you feel really horrible for getting the 'wrong answer' (in terms of interpreting literary works), which did not provoke me to speak up in class.
I too enjoyed Dr. Somerton's class. She's been an easy marker and I truly believe she wants to her students to do well. It's great that she doesn't pressure her students to speak up in class. I love that. My only beef was that I didn't enjoy two of the required novels. But to each their own. I'd take her again. She made this course easy peasy.
boring
I thought she was a good prof, I'm not particularly fond of English but I maintained the same marks I had in highschool with her. She was good over deadlines and would give extentions all of time. She was also kind of amusing on times especially if you got the wrong answer/interpretation. She was prof and I would definately take her again!
I loved Dr. Somerton! This course was interesting and easy. If you come to class and do the readings it's not hard to get a good mark. Although she is not very open to interpretations that are not the same as her own, her ideas are usually obvious and straightforward so it's not hard to do well. I would definitely recommend her!
she's really fair. she gives you the test questions prior to the test and lets you bring in notes (even on the final) but because of this i found she marked a little harder. kind of picks favourites according to if you speak up or not, but she's pretty good!
A deep resounding, "meh..." About 75% of the course was poetry opposed to every other course doing a bit of everything, with novels taking the focus. She's very timid and monotoned. Don't avoid her, but certainly don't go out of your way to get her.
She was terrible. He classes were extremely boring. She was never open to anyones interpretation that didn't match her own. Several times it felt like she was arguing her last break up into the stories, and now hate all men. She marks solely on what students don't do as apposed to what they do. Avoid her at all cost.
She is always right, everyone else is wrong if you don't agree with her. Narrow minded and arrogent prof.
Not fond of her to be honest. Found her very set in her ways. Whatever her opinion is, is the right one. She isn't very open to anyone else's ideas other than her own. Narrow minded. Fairly tough marker. Spent more time on poetry then any of the other forms we studied. Would rather not take her class again.
I enjoyed Dr. somerton's class. As long as you show up to class and do all the readings, you have nothing to worry about. Easy going, always wants the class to participate but doesn't force you to read if you don't want to. She's big on grammar, so make sure you know your stuff! Not hard to get a decent grade.
She is very quiet, loves loves loves to discuss poetry. Although her classes can be a little boring I really did like her because she gets to the point, there is no confusion during her discussions. She is an average marker..don't worry she's not out to get you. Overall, a very good prof who actually cares. I would definitely take her class again.
most one sided teacher ever. she demanded an answer and only one answer. Even if you gave her what she wanted to hear she refused it unless you were a girl. ughhh
very unorganized, and is never clear on anything. She takes forever to correct tests, and expects a very specif answer, often being right is not enough. She is also very dry, and picks favourites.
Dr. Somerton was not one of my favourite professors. i found that she always looked for her own specific answers in essays, which really sucks. KNOW YOUR GRAMMAR! you can easily fail an essay with her with numerous grammar mistakes. i do not recommend anyone to taking her class again.
that comment below is supposes to say english 1080. again, dont take her class.
HORRIBLE. She grades very hard and picks favourites. You basically have to suck up in order to do well. She is very unorganized and takes forever to hand papers back.
A throwback to the old feminist days. It is very hard and frustrating to try to get good marks in her class as a male. Best you can hope to do is battle through it and take the B.
Don't understand how she is getting bad ratings! I took Engl 2001 with her and thought she was great! Be sure to take notes on her opinion becuase that is what she wants on tests/assignments. Prof Sumerton doesn't care about deadlines and will most always give an extension if you need it! !
Somerton is a nice woman who will give you an extension if you need one. Her classes are fairly tedious, however, as she often spends them simply reading through passages from the texts. Her classes never feel well organized.
In short, she seems lazy. gives extensions so she wont have to mark. slow marker, but fair. I am an english major and my marks were consistent with other courses. she's very unorganized and gives no notes or guidelines. I don't think I would take another course with her
It's really hard to understand what she is talking and telling. Actually i dnt understand and learn anything from her.
She is simply not a good teacher. Summarizes too much, does not go over important symbolism and themes, often she can't understand the poems herself. I learned more from google and scholarly essays than from her, even though she'll write "not true" if it's not her opinion. Im getting better marks in my 3rd year eng classes. Not taking again. AVOID!
She is brutal! Poor term layout and tough marker. She never checks her e-mail and she wore a blood pressure monitor to class one day because she is that adamant on not cancelling class! She is less likely to help you if you have missed a few classes, and she seems to read passages about the poems verbatim from other authors works without digging in
Confusing in class and is very narrow minded and doesn't listen to anyone else's opinions. The lectures are boring and only summarises without exploring the meaning behind the text.
Fair marker. Very passionate about English. Pretty boring class lectures though.
If you have a choice I''d say avoid Somerton. I didn''t find the class work overly hard but trying to force yourself to go to class is impossible. She speaks quietly and very monotone. It''s almost impossible to stay focused in her class. It feels close to pointless attending class.
Somerton is kind and when asked for help she will answer any questions. There were a limited number of evalutions (4) and the only real work was having to read the assigned material. She can be a tough grader. Lectures were very dull and weren't worth attending. while classes were only an hour and 15 minutes, they seemed to drag on forever.
Lectures were LONG. Speaks straight from the text and adds very little to the readings. Only 2 inclass essays and 1 short paper which were graded fairly easily. In class and final exam are open book, allows notes and text and let's you rewrite if you do poorly. Despite boring lectures, I would recommend, you do not need to go to class to do well.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The first in-class assessment she marked of mine, she gave me a 10% for 13 of it. A 10! I sent her an e-mail asking to meet with her, she didn't reply. She told the class we could rewrite bad papers; I did the best I could. No change in grade. No feedback. My final essay got an 80 with no comments as to how I could improve.
Very kind lady. She cares about you and is happy to help if you have questions. She usually let's you bring in notes for in class assignments, and I found her to be a very fair grader. Her classes are long, and somewhat boring and it can be hard to convince yourself to go sometimes.
nice lady, cares
She's a dear woman, and such a unique character. Her lectures might seem long and boring but it's worth your time to talk to her before or after class. She's quite funny, and she'll do anything in the world to help you. In fact, she expects it. Her tests are fill in the blank, her essays aren't hard to write if you remember what she's said.
I took two classes with her. I attended maybe half of the lectures and printed the work and took it with me instead of buying the book. Got 80% and 82%. She's not going to spoon-feed you if you're not about to read the stuff, read online analyses from other sources, and take notes. If you have a medical condition, she's more than understanding.
Awful teacher, cannot get words out and says "um" a lot. She stares off into space most of the time and gives no detail on what she wants in your essays. Hard marker and expects the best even when she didn't teach anything. Very poor prof, would recommend switching right away.
Stay away :) she is awful. If you take her, I'll pray for you. She gives horrible feedback on essays and assignments
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. All she does is read the short story or poem, discusses it, and tells you to write an essay. Doesn't actually teach you how she wants the essays written or tell you what she expects. Definitely the worst instructor I've ever had. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Dr Somerton is an interesting character in that she does just basically read the literature she assigns, then provides her personal commentary. The nature of her teaching, however, seems to require you visit her during her office hours. Her lectures aren't solid, but go to her office hours and she will help you in ways you'd never imagine.
Very dry, very boring, VERY depressing lectures. All she does is read the poems/stories in class and does a little explanation of them. Often calls on students to read, which got annoying because no one ever wants to. Avoid this prof if you can, she's really sweet and helps in office hours but her classes are the worst thing you'll ever experience
Very tough marker, and will never change her opinion on things. Her opinions are what you should write about. She is not open to new styles and forms of writing, and the lectures were very dry and silent.
She is very vague with what she wants you to do in your essays, and then when everyone does bad she doesn't understand why. She would also put people on the spot to read if no one volunteered.
A very nice lady however lectures are dull and boring. Doesn't give very solid feedback on how to improve
Tough marker and won't clearly explain what you did wrong. Spends the class reading the story/poem and telling you her opinion and you HAVE to use her opinion for you essay. Doesn't actually teach you how to write. Dull lectures
