well- she's nice and all and EXTREMELY energetic. only the prep for her tests is terrible. no study guides, and studying the notes alone will NOT help you to pass the tests. you'd actually have to read the book to pass. blah.
Very helpful, long lectures but provides notes online, eager to teach and help when needed, very nice easy to talk to get a long w/ only problem were the tests were tough but if you study hard and follow along with readingsd you'll get an A
great teacher... extremely nice and cares about her students. test are tough but she gives alot of class work to make up extra points. i failed every test and still ended up with a b- for the year
She is very nice but only teaches from blackboard. Her tests are awful, ridiculous. I wouldnt take her again.
hard class
Terrible
Hard, expects you to prepare for class. Won't read the book to you! Work hard and you will learn a LOT!
VERY HARD tests w/ tricky multiple choice questions, lectures are somewhat unclear, talks too fast without giving visual aids, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Okay, Heres the thing. She is not very clear. Apparently she was better last semester, but now she sucks. Her tests are wicked hard, she tries to trick you.(Like saying well, who's smarter) Her stats are not accurate either. Just ask around.
Very unclear, she made my first semester freshman year awful. Extremely hard test, with no reviews and tricky multiple choice questions. Long, unclear power point presentations for lectures. I really can't say one good thing about her.
Learned so much - loved her class. Yes it is hard, but is everything suppose to be easy?

Tough class, but i dont know of any research methods classes described as easy. She's a really sweet person and tries to help as much as possible. Definitely a heavy work load so be prepared...i thought she was great, though!
She does long boring powerpoint presentation and then gives tricky multiple choice tests. She does give opportunity for extra credit but it doesnt help much. I wouldnt take her again
She's a nice lady, but she is hard. Her powerpoints are long and her tests are hard. If you're serious about Psych. take her, but if its just for a GER, don't.
i did really bad on the first test because i didn't read the book.. but once you start reading and taking ur own notes of the key info. along with studying her powerpoints you'll do fine. tests are hard but she offers ways to boost your grades
She is very nice but I would not recommend taking her class. Multi-choice portions of the tests are tricky and you have to participate on discussions online. Class participation counts for too much.

I found her to be very hard, but she was very fair, I was able to go to her whenever I had a problem and she helped. This is not a lazy-mans class, you need to work hard and study a lot if you don't understand, see her she will help
I thought she was boring, unclear, and tough. Her lecturs didn't match her test questions. I don't think she knows what shes teaching.
She is difficult, unclear, and NOT willing to help you. I was told to "read the book" when I asked for help. She is so fast paced that you don't have time to really learn anything, but just get things done, if you even understand what you're suppossed to be doing. She has unreasonable expectations.
This the worst professor I've ever had. She is very disorganized and chaotic. She spends a big portion of the lecture talking about how she's a single 41 y/o that's been through several different men. She is very unprofessional. She doesn't know what she's teaching.
i would not ever recommend this women to anyone.. she was the worst teacher ihave ever had.. she is extremely unfair and unwilling to help you. her notes have nothing at all to do with whats on the test and when you ask for her help she gets aggrivated.. she sucks never take her trust and believe me
I heard this lady was awful at first but once i started the class, she was good. The class its self is very difficult, but she does help me whenever i ask. She's fast and explains it again if you ask. It's hard, but you actually learn something.
Heard some aweful stories about her but had to take the class.Found that there is A LOT of work but worth it because it really helps your grade. She is nice and easy to talk;helps if you need it.The class it's self is really hard but its good that she spells everything out for you to do.Do the H.W.
She is the worst pro. i have ever had and i am a senior psych. major. If you have a learning disability this lady is rude and clueless about accomidations. She needs to goto teaching school to learn how to teach and be enlightend that people have different ways of learning. **DO NOT TAKE HER**
the worst teacher I have ever had!
Her tests are so ridiculous. she has a bad attitude and gives an obnoxious amount of work. I had her for py 320 as a senior/commuter who works a full time job and when I mentioned feeling overwhelmed with work she said "well if you didn't choose to work so much..." ha ha. b/c I love to work right. get real lady. don't take her class.
off the scale hot. gorgeous subject material. beautiful big brown scientific eyes. very unique perspective.
she is def.a VERY hard teacher, but if you keep up with the work you will get SO much out of her classes.I was much better prepared and further ahead of psych majors that took stats and research w/ other professors. she is ALWAYS available to help you as long as you don't go to her last minute.if you're serious about learning than take her
She is an overall Easy grader, though there is quite a bit of work to do. NOTHING CAN BE HANDED IN LATE!(That really killed my grade this semester.) Honestly though, this class is amazing... I've never learned so much about Psychology. She's smart, fun, (kinda cute), and the course is very interesting. Come prepared and you will do just fine.
She is really not as bad as everyone makes her out to be. There is a lot of work and pop quizzes and the final is super long, and presentations. She is super smart and knows sooo much about psych. She is a nice funny person who is just really into psych and teaching. Really it was a good class
Good teacher, talks wicked fast and doesnt repeat stuff. Tests are 6 pop quizzes (open notes) and then 6 coglabs which are all pre-schudled (be sure to not miss these, you CANT make them up). I had at D at mid term but finished with an A-, so if you try you can do well. Open notes open book final as well. Really nice prof though.
?
talks way too fast, notes she gives are mostly random factoids. when she wasn't giving useless notes, she made us present chapters out of books (which made up a large portion of class time). there was almost no reason to attend when you could just read for yourself. terrible class, terrible teacher
She was very rude and disrespectful. She continually made sarcastic comments that were completely uncalled for. As a professor with her DOCTORATE in Psychology, I would have thought she'd understand about compassion and empathy but she has none, I'm sorry.
she is nice and you will learn alot, but she is hard, gives pop quizzes and makes you do alot of reading
haha well, she is a very smart lady because psychology is "her life" but if you don't make it yours, its hard to enjoy the class (which she states the very first day). She makes you present in front of the class, but no one pays attention and they are the worse experiences ever! She should actually be teaching the class and not critiquing us AWFUL
A ridiculous amount of reading that, honestly, has very little to do with what's on the test. It is virtually impossible to take notes in this class. Talks very fast, and is sarcastic (which actually makes her funny if you like sarcasm). I was very interested in this class, but I wish her teaching style was different.
I would not recommend her. This was my senior year and I was looking for a fun class. You cant understand a thing she says. Even if it made sense, you would not be able to catch it because she talks too fast. Take a different course!
This woman is solely concerned with her outside grant projects and the money she is receiving for them. She has many other companies so her time is quite limited. I think out of every person I have ever met in all my travels all over the world that this lady is a psychological mess and a very dangerous person. She attacked me the 2nd day of class.

To be honest I will never take this professor again. Talk about not caring about her students. She is so wrapped up in her case studies, thats all she teaches. She is not compassionate about anything but her studies and thats all she gives you to do. Do yourself a favor and don't take her.
I was thoroughly disappointed withher. She was rude, spiteful and outright mean to students. She actually read a student paper that she thought was terrible out loud to the rest of the class. I think she is unprofessional and wasted my time. I enjoy class and take pride in my work, but she ruined what could have been a fun and intersting class.
One of the best professor's I have ever had. She cares a lot about her students and really tries to help them do well/ prepare for grad school. She is hard, but I learned so much from her.
I'm taking her integrated 201/360 class. It's challenging. There is a test about every 4 classes. LOTS of homework, LOTS! She doesn't accept late assignments. Assignments make up more points than her tests. You can ace all tests and fail the class if you don't turn in homework but you can get a C if you fail test and do all the work. She's silly.
Great teacher! ..very energetic and loves what she does! doesnt take attendence but notes during lecture are extremely important for the quizes and quizes are unnanounced..about 1 every 4 classes or so. doesnt accept late work and cannot make up misses quizes. SHE IS VERY HELPFUL and easy to understand, her grading is crystal clear.
Excellent excellent teacher. Her class will be your life for the semester, and PLAN TO READ THE BOOK, but you'll definitely know your stuff by the end of the class, which, I might add, you'll definitely need in your future schooling/job. She's straightforward, and not kidding w/whats in her syllabus. If you can follow directions, you're all set.
GREAT PROFESSOR!!! Everyone who does well in her class loves her. If you understand her style of teaching you should do well. If you are a bad notetaker you will not do well. She is excellent and I have taken 4 classes now with her and a lab each better than the first!
Took her special topics class...she is a BRILLIANT woman and very excited about the material...as others said her class will be your life for the semester and she is tough but you will learn a lot...DO NOT take for an easy A or if you just want to skate by, if you're willing to work hard you will learn TONS
She talks relentlessly and cuts no slack for anyone. She doesn't like to answer questions or clarify what she means on assignments. Her tests are hard and she seems really excited about her material too bad she completely kills the fun out of it
I should have waited till I had taken more psyc classes before because her quizzes are essay format and maybe this would help, but if go to every class, pay attention/take notes, you will do awesome and enjoy it. Of all the classes I've taken (now 8 psyc classes), I use what I've learned here the most in school and at home. Highly recommend!
Such a great topic with an obnoxious, arrogant and hateful lady. Come and see the way she often embarrass people in the class. She is too uptight, and the course materials has nothing to do with the course itself. Looks like what she googled off the web. I regret taking this class!
Well, I came into this class with a high expectation of this professor, since friends of mine really enjoyed her class. I found her extraordinarily difficult. She has you write numerous papers that have questions that are very difficult. She expects Masters level work out of a Undergraduate class. Don't take her unless you have lots of time!
She has the ability to walk into a room and bring silence. She terrifies me, but at the same time, I think she's awesome. I have no doubt she could be mean to some students, but that's because she has really high standards and expects you to work very hard to live up to them. Underneath her exterior, she actually does care about students a lot.
I am an older student who takes her classes seriously and this was the worst class I have ever taken. Do not take unless last resort! Very hard and confusing! Barely keeping afloat!
She definitely has a way of making a room silent when she walks in. She keeps order in the class and demands respect to visitors. I enjoyed this class. Not much to it; just show up and listen. Mainly others doing presentations. She wont let you show up, sign in and leave. Very observant. I recommend this class if you are serious about Psyc.
She is all over the place. Quizzes time you meet. She expects that you can write a PERFECT essay in 12 minutes (these are her quizzes). Tons of reading to do along with "participation" essays at the end of the class, which is timed & graded as well as the quizzes. She is extremely picky when she grades. You'll get a B- if you lucky.
Grades with check, check plus, etc. like you're in kindergarten. Very tough at grading. Too many readings. The tests/quizzes are timed and you are expected to write 5 full essays during the midterm/final. Talks too quickly. Attendance is mandatory. Quizzes at beginning and end of class. Horrible. Don't know how I passed.
The reviews about this professor below regarding what type of course work is expected during this class are accurate. However, if you want to work with somebody that wishes to challenge you into becoming a better student I suggest this professor. She's tough, but she cares and if you put in the necessary effort and work hard you will see that.
I will NEVER take her EVER AGAIN. you guys say no text book is a plus, but with cognitive psychology you NEEEED a textbook and also the fact that she doesn't do actual power points with notes she expects u to read a bunch of articles. but heaven help you if you miss one day of reading. i will say she tries to make it fun as possible.
Dr. Spievak is an outstanding instructor. She is an expert in her field. As long as you put in the work and dedication, she will ensure that you do great. She genuinely cares and your work in her class can without a doubt take you far beyond the class itself. She prepares you for grad school. Do not take, if you aren't willing to work for it!!!
Very professional and focused on her work. Keeps students best interests at heart and pushes them beyond their comfort zone in order to better then.
Dr. Spievak is a nice person, but as a professor I would never take a class with her again. Cognitive psych was a nightmare. She assigns long, dry readings for EVERY single class, and you may/may not have a quiz on every single reading or class period. No powerpoints, just speaks what you need to know. Very hard grader, never satisfied.
One of the best professors I've ever had! She's definitely not easy, but you'll learn a lot if you do the work.
The way she structures her class is meaningful and makes sense with the subject. You are expected to take the time to read all the materials she provides and take notes on everything. For psych majors this class is important! She is kind and funny and participating in class is easy to do and can be fun. She expects you to do the work .
Professor Spievak is super knowledgeable and Cognitive Psych is SO interesting. This class is definitely not for you if you dont enjoy reading articles, writing essays, or taking lecture notes without a PowerPoint. I personally did really well and liked her a lot as a person. Would take a class with her again!
She allows you to use notes on the tests but her questions on the tests are so out of the blue. She has you read and write down questions regarding the text before almost every class and if you're thorough, it could take around two hours. Her lectures are not posted online and they mostly consist of confusing charts or pointless stock photos. WORST
I took personality with Dr. Spievak my junior year of college, and let me tell you, I have never been so determined to pass a class. Something about her makes you want to strive for greatness, and afterwards she recruited me to join her lab group. If you put in the work, Dr. Spievsk will do anything to help you succeed. Very invested. Brilliant.
she is very educated (she will tell you 794 times) she will basically belittle you if you struggle in classes. I witnessed her/she told us of how she basically treated people who didn't understand stuff. Also, told one class she would be there for the people she advises (when it came to e-mails) and told another class she just deletes them.
She is disrespectful and rude. She talks down to the people she is supposed to help. She basically told me I didnt belong in my major. This course is designed for her to be helpful and instead Ive left class feeling discouraged. I wish I believed the horror stories about her and just stayed away.
The class is solely graded on watching video lectures, homework ACCURACY (not just completing it), & exams. She does not use Blackboard, so you only learn your up to date grade when the exams are returned. I left every class more confused about the material than I did before I got there. Would recommend taking PSYC 201 with literally anyone else
Shes absolutely no help. I left every class more and more confused. About mid semester after studying, taking notes, and hiring a tutor I finally caved and emailed her asking her for any advice on understanding the material. Her reply was thats extremely inappropriate of me to ask? and I should just drop her class and take the withdrawal
I do not recommend taking this professor, she is rude to her students and is not helpful what so ever. She is unfair and won't take your needs seriously if you need help, she would rather you drop the class. Very unpleased with the outcome of her teaching style and requirements for her class.
Checks NEW homework for accuracy instead of effort, completion, and understanding.
Worst professor and was absolutely no help whatsoever. When I got confused she told me I should have read the textbook “more accurately”. You teach yourself by reading the textbook and do a practice worksheet in class. Thats it. If you get stuck she just gives you the answer so you dont even learn.
Honestly she wasnt as rude as I expected based on the reviews, I though he lectures were quite helpful and she lets you use a notecard on exams. Final is not cumulative and on the last day of class. HW is graded on accuracy which is ridiculous. She did not take attendance but if you miss class email her your HW because she wont accept it late.
This professor is a nice lady, but truly does not care if students pass her class or not. She told my class we all failed and failed me by a single point. Questions on the exam are very different than her example problems. There is also homework every week that is graded harshly based on accuracy.
awful awful awful. Do not take her if you need a high GPA. She will grade you based on her feelings on you. If you're a class pet typically, take her, she will grade you fine, but if you're a typical student who doesn't talk much, don't even think about taking her. She also stood in the room the whole time we did her evals.
terrible set up for research methods 2, had to drop the class. not helpful, not clear, not good at explaining things, not interesting. other profs have a much better way of doing RM2 so that you barely realize you're writing a 20 page paper. her setup made no sense, all over the place, not clear on what she wanted.
Wow. Never had such a tough grader. I am a straight A student, with a 77 in her class. Her comments on papers are soul-crushing to read. She sure knows how to destroy a student's confidence without any attempt at helping or inspiring. I highly advise against taking her. A professor at BSU in this department even said the same bad things about her!
Professor Spievak is interesting. Every assignment is to build towards the final paper. Her lectures weren't very helpful and she wouldn't post them for reference. Her feedback on the paper was helpful, but sometimes inconsistent. Something that was good last week ends up being not so good the next week. Hard to keep up with sometimes.
Actually the worst. Expected us to know exactly what to do with very little direction. disorganized and will not be helpful if you ask a question or for clarification. I asked her for help and she straight up told me she "couldn't help" me and that everyone in the class was struggling so to get over it.
Avoid this professor at all costs. She's absolutely terrible when it comes to explaining what you need to know, so you basically have to teach yourself. She grades so harshly it's insane. And the thing is, you don't know what you did wrong because she never gives feedback until you email her and pressure her to give you proper feedback. Terrible.
There are 8 assignments total, with four of those being heavily weighted tests. If you do poorly on one, you will get a bad grade overall. She offers no opportunities for extra credit. She doesn't grade homework for accuracy or give any feedback, so it's hard to know if you understand the material. You basically teach yourself and hope you pass.
I enjoyed taking her class. As long as you show up to class and show interest and put in effort it should be relatively easy. Most classes she would lecture for the first few minutes and then leave us to work independently.
This is the second class I've taken with Prof. Spievak. It is apparent that she is incredibly knowledgeable and interested in this course. Her lectures were sometimes hard to keep up with. Each week, there is a lecture, article, and quiz. She gives good feedback, and all of the content is interesting. I definitely recommend this class!
I had Dr. Spievak for cognitive psych. I found her lectures to be extraordinarily insightful and I always left each class having learned something new. I was able to connect each lecture to my own life. If you do the readings and show effort you will succeed. Best psych class at BSU thus far.
This is the worst professor I had! I never failed a class until now. She's a tough grader! Only grades on accuracy, she does not care if you tried. Her lecture videos had nothing to do with the articles. It's very confusing. If you do poorly on one test forget it you failed the class. She gives no extra credit.
While her expectations seem clear, the grading is incredibly harsh. You'll think you just did so well at answering your homework questions, to get a 3/10. She wants students to write novels or she doesn't think you understand the material enough. The material is good, but she expects too much.
She grades on accuracy and not effort. If you are thinking about taking her I recommend taking literally anything else. Work is always hard and some of it seems unnecessary. If you're going to take it get ready to write every single week.
Please avoid this professor at all costs, I have never failed a course before taking her. Her assignments are so harshly graded, even if you put in effort she will give you a zero if it's not up to her standards. I emailed her asking for help and for extra credit opportunities, she gave me neither of those options.
I have worked my butt off making sure I do her work well, and show I paid attention to the material. Receiving a C as a graduating senior, because she will hit me with a 15/30 because she didn't like how I interpreted the given article. Unless you're Dr. Spievak herself, your work won't be satisfactory. I have put hours of work into each week.
I can't say enough bad things about Dr. Spievak. Talks down to you, doesn't help when you ask for it, and is not accommodating at all. When I told her I experienced test anxiety, she brushed it off by saying “I don't know what ‘test anxiety' is, but it's not going to work in my class.” Horrible professor, please avoid her at all costs
Professor is a tough grader. Terrible at answering emails. Do not recommend if not actually interested in the subject.
Wow, what a horror. I'm not too excited about her teaching style. Personally, I wouldn't recommend.
Please listen to all the negative reviews. I saw them all, and thought I could manage. I could not. She has a weekly assignment due every Wednesday. 3 questions, 300+ words each. She provides minimal to no feedback on these quizzes. She will take one point, two points, three points off and leave no feedback as to why or how to improve for next week
AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!! THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD AT BSU!!!!! PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER. NOTHING POSTED ON BLACKBOARD ALL YEAR, NEVER KNOW YOUR GRADE. I HONESTLY NEVER EVEN KNOW WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT. PLEASE STAY AWAY!
She was given this course last minute, so I was sympathetic and assumed it would improve. It did not. Her lectures are unfocused and disjointed, and her slides are only stock photos and have no terms. She grades pretty tough, and she doesn't put it on Blackboard. She can be very passive-aggressive when given feedback. Would not recommend.
